Staying ahead of the game. for the news where you are.

:00:11.:00:14.

A new report shows a big growth for businesses specialising

:00:15.:00:16.

High-tech firms are saying they are booming.

:00:17.:00:30.

More calls to rename Bristol's Colston Hall -

:00:31.:00:32.

And eels tonight before in a brief taste of spring tomorrow. Your fool

:00:33.:00:41.

weather forecast later in the programme.

:00:42.:00:45.

It's claimed the West Country is experiencing a big boom

:00:46.:00:49.

Last night we exclusively revealed that James Dyson was making a huge

:00:50.:00:52.

Now other firms say the future is looking good.

:00:53.:00:59.

Here's our political reporter Robin Markwell.

:01:00.:01:02.

Sir James Dyson poured petrol in the tank of Wiltshire's economy

:01:03.:01:08.

yesterday with investment on a vast scale.

:01:09.:01:10.

He wants to turn the hangers of Hullavington Airfield

:01:11.:01:13.

Those who work out of the same buildings over

:01:14.:01:18.

I think for businesses it is definitely good news.

:01:19.:01:26.

With potentially another 5000 people working on our doorstep, lunchtime

:01:27.:01:29.

The expansion has been fuelled by a roaring trade in the Far East.

:01:30.:01:41.

China accounts for a quarter of their trade in precision

:01:42.:01:44.

And a booming business means they've doubled the number of staff

:01:45.:01:47.

So with Dyson recruiting thousands close by, will there be enough

:01:48.:01:51.

If we work together to ensure that our youngsters across the region

:01:52.:01:56.

come through onto the entry-level schemes, they are studying

:01:57.:02:00.

the right subjects, the Stem subjects in schools,

:02:01.:02:04.

and we work together with schools to make sure that those

:02:05.:02:07.

skills come through, then we will be OK.

:02:08.:02:09.

If we don't reinvest now, we will have a problem

:02:10.:02:11.

Balanced economy is a finely-tuned thing.

:02:12.:02:14.

And keeping the West's high-tech sector soaring will need many

:02:15.:02:16.

new minds to dream up the machines of tomorrow.

:02:17.:02:18.

Bristol and Bath are also experiencing a sharp upturn in

:02:19.:02:21.

high-tech business. The report says the sector has grown 65% in just two

:02:22.:02:33.

years. It is booming arbours and outboards with new specialties like

:02:34.:02:36.

quantum technology and gaming and they are all growing at their own

:02:37.:02:38.

pace. Balanced economy is

:02:39.:02:40.

a finely-tuned thing. And keeping the West's high-tech

:02:41.:02:41.

sector soaring will need many new minds to dream up

:02:42.:02:44.

the machines of tomorrow. Plans to extend Cribbs Causeway

:02:45.:02:47.

are on hold because of concerns about the impact

:02:48.:02:49.

on the surrounding economy. The proposals would increase

:02:50.:02:51.

the size of the site by 50%. Planning permission was granted

:02:52.:02:54.

in November but the scheme has now been called in for review

:02:55.:02:57.

by the Secretary of State. Plans have been unveiled

:02:58.:03:04.

for a new business park Around 4,000 people could work

:03:05.:03:06.

on the site near junction 25 of the M5, with the proposals

:03:07.:03:13.

including offices Measures are still being kept

:03:14.:03:18.

in place to stop the spread of bird flu in some parts of the West,

:03:19.:03:25.

despite restrictions The Wildfowl and Wetlands

:03:26.:03:29.

trust at Slimbridge, which saw four cases of avian flu

:03:30.:03:34.

in January, is still Birds like these flamingoes have had

:03:35.:03:38.

to be kept inside since December. But experts say they are monitoring

:03:39.:03:42.

the situation on a daily basis. The Arbroath at dawn every day

:03:43.:03:56.

looking for any signs of unusual behaviour or dead birds. We haven't

:03:57.:04:00.

found any since January and even then it was only a few cases amongst

:04:01.:04:06.

tens of thousands, but it only takes one to start an outbreak.

:04:07.:04:07.

DEFRA says it will review all restrictions at the end of April.

:04:08.:04:11.

Every fire station across Somerset and Devon is going to be given

:04:12.:04:14.

a new piece of kit which should save lives and improve

:04:15.:04:16.

Firefighters have spent the past year trying it out -

:04:17.:04:20.

with dramatic results, as Clinton Rogers reports.

:04:21.:04:27.

It's not often the Fire Brigade start a fire.

:04:28.:04:29.

To test a new piece of kit - a hand-held probe, seen

:04:30.:04:37.

here through a thermal imaging camera, which they think

:04:38.:04:39.

Now, before we see how that demonstration actually developed,

:04:40.:04:45.

let me show you in close-up the kit they were trialling.

:04:46.:04:53.

Put simply, what they do is they drive this through a wall,

:04:54.:04:56.

and water is pushed through it here at high pressure.

:04:57.:04:59.

It comes out this end as a mist, which can quickly and radically

:05:00.:05:02.

reduce the temperature of a burning building.

:05:03.:05:05.

The trial in this derelict building produced astonishing results.

:05:06.:05:09.

The water sprayed inside reduced the temperature of the burning room

:05:10.:05:11.

from 400 degrees to 80 degrees in 30 seconds, allowing the firemen

:05:12.:05:17.

of survival for anybody in that building much, much greater.

:05:18.:05:25.

And it also reduces the risk for our staff.

:05:26.:05:27.

So it very much is at the core of what we're trying to do.

:05:28.:05:36.

The probes were used in a real fire at a leisure centre

:05:37.:05:39.

The Brigade say unquestionably it halted the fire more quickly.

:05:40.:05:43.

So now every fire station across Devon and Cornwall

:05:44.:05:45.

will get one of these - an investment of around ?150,000.

:05:46.:05:50.

What it does is it gives them the option to fight the fire

:05:51.:05:53.

Potentially, this could save firefighters' lives.

:05:54.:05:57.

It absolutely will make our firefighting operation

:05:58.:05:59.

So, on the face of it, a simple piece of kit -

:06:00.:06:04.

but one which will change the way building fires are

:06:05.:06:06.

More than 1,600 people have now signed a petition to get the name

:06:07.:06:14.

They're unhappy about Edward Colston's role in the slave trade.

:06:15.:06:18.

But others say that would be airbrushing history.

:06:19.:06:20.

It was opened 150 years ago as a music venue

:06:21.:06:29.

It has already had a new entrance, and another ?45 million is expected

:06:30.:06:34.

There are lots of changes taking place at the Colston Hall,

:06:35.:06:41.

but one thing that's not being painted over

:06:42.:06:44.

That's despite a growing campaign to get Edward Colston's surname

:06:45.:06:50.

removed because of his role in the slave trade.

:06:51.:06:54.

And I think it's offensive to have a civil building

:06:55.:06:59.

that is for music, for celebration, something that should

:07:00.:07:01.

uplift your spirit and your soul, to be named after someone

:07:02.:07:04.

I think the name should reflect the inspirational people that

:07:05.:07:09.

I don't think it's really appropriate anymore that Colston

:07:10.:07:14.

More than 1500 people have now signed the petition

:07:15.:07:18.

History should be taught warts and all.

:07:19.:07:24.

I don't think we should rename it, we shouldn't seek

:07:25.:07:28.

We should teach every bit of our history, and not just

:07:29.:07:33.

selected bits that make us feel comfortable.

:07:34.:07:35.

The Colston Hall is on Colston Street, opposite Colston Tower

:07:36.:07:39.

and around the corner from the Colston statue.

:07:40.:07:45.

He has schools in the city named after him, too.

:07:46.:07:47.

But, whether Edward Colston's name stays or goes from the music venue

:07:48.:07:50.

is ultimately down to the trust which runs it.

:07:51.:07:52.

We have a very well-planned programme of work over

:07:53.:07:55.

And the name, what the new wonderful building will be

:07:56.:07:59.

The Colston Hall name is going, then?

:08:00.:08:03.

What the building will be called is part of that consideration over

:08:04.:08:06.

We've always said that we will bear that in mind when we look

:08:07.:08:15.

towards opening the triumphant new building in 2020.

:08:16.:08:17.

So keeping the name is also an option, then?

:08:18.:08:19.

Everything is on the table at the moment.

:08:20.:08:21.

And, bearing in mind, only ?30 million of the ?45 million

:08:22.:08:24.

needed for renovation work has been raised already.

:08:25.:08:27.

So, naming the venue after a sponsor is also a possibility to earn

:08:28.:08:30.

Thousands of people turned out across the West today

:08:31.:08:42.

The Tornado is a brand new train built to an original design.

:08:43.:08:47.

It was created 9 years ago at a cost of ?3 million.

:08:48.:08:50.

Today it passed through out region as it ran along the mainline

:08:51.:08:53.

I always prefer steam travel to a travel are being in a car. It is

:08:54.:09:11.

relaxing. Exciting. My father is a trained fanatics all means a lot to

:09:12.:09:13.

him and it is just a great family him and it is just a great family

:09:14.:09:18.

experience and obviously with modern-day life it is nice to see

:09:19.:09:23.

back and get the whole experience back and get the whole experience

:09:24.:09:27.

and knowing it is a new train it is fun to come for the day out.

:09:28.:09:28.

If you missed her today she'll back in the West again in May.

:09:29.:09:35.

That's it from us tonight, we're back with breakfast tomorrow but for

:09:36.:09:41.

now I will say good night and leave you with the late forecast. Did they

:09:42.:09:47.

find a train ride! It battled its way through some rain, not quite a

:09:48.:09:51.

tornado but an area of low pressure that is affecting us at the moment.

:09:52.:09:56.

As it tracks its way off to the north and east, a real squeeze on

:09:57.:10:02.

the isobars. That means the winds are packing up and starting to cast

:10:03.:10:07.

quite nicely as we go through the night, up to 50 mph in some places,

:10:08.:10:12.

especially up the channel. You can see we have had a few showers

:10:13.:10:15.

through the night but by tomorrow morning it is largely dry and clear

:10:16.:10:19.

and even with the wind the temperature will fall down but we

:10:20.:10:24.

should just about a frost. A chilly start and still breezy first thing

:10:25.:10:30.

but a lot of sunshine around. The wind will slowly eased through the

:10:31.:10:34.

day, generally dry with a couple of showers passing through, but mostly

:10:35.:10:38.

dry, good spells of sunshine if you can get in the shelter. It might

:10:39.:10:44.

feel quite pleasant, almost like spring has sprung. Make the most of

:10:45.:10:49.

that because spring will go back into winter when we head towards

:10:50.:10:55.

Friday and another area of low pressure spreading yet more rain

:10:56.:10:58.

towards us and that looks like it will stay with us on to the weekend

:10:59.:11:02.

at times so unsettled again from Friday morning

:11:03.:11:03.

outlook. A whole load of 11 is. What does that mean? Maybe John Hammond

:11:04.:11:07.

will tell you. We're in for a bumpy ride. The

:11:08.:11:16.

weather chopping and changing keeping us on our toes. Rain never

:11:17.:11:20.

too far away from our crystal ball. There has been rain around today

:11:21.:11:24.

across southern areas. This band of wet weather pushing through Wales

:11:25.:11:27.

and the Midlands. A little bit of the white stuff mixed in over the

:11:28.:11:32.

high ground Snowdonia, some snow for an trans-Pennine routes as well.

:11:33.:11:36.

Snow at low levels through the night. Further south the main story

:11:37.:11:40.

is the strength of the wind. Blustery. Gales on the western coast

:11:41.:11:44.

and through the English Channel. Even in land, gusty winds through

:11:45.:11:46.

the night. For the night. Further

:11:47.:11:48.
