People from the region caught up in the london attacks, | :00:07. | :00:15.
I was just walking across the bridge and a bus stop and everybody was | :00:16. | :00:32.
screaming. Everybody came off the bus and they were upset. | :00:33. | :00:35.
And we'll also find out how the police here are | :00:36. | :00:38.
Many of the people from the West who were caught up in the terror | :00:39. | :00:45.
attacks are finally on their way home tonight. | :00:46. | :00:47.
Local school children were among those who were put into lockdown | :00:48. | :00:49.
Teachers from St John St Francis Church School | :00:50. | :00:53.
in Bridgwater have said they were they were singing songs | :00:54. | :00:55.
with the children inside parliament as a distraction from the events. | :00:56. | :00:58.
And a group of ten and 11 years old from Hotwells Primary | :00:59. | :01:01.
School Bristol were also there when the terror | :01:02. | :01:03.
Well, it's been a very stressful parents of children | :01:04. | :01:07.
Year six have been on a school trip to Westminster. | :01:08. | :01:12.
And earlier this afternoon, I spoke to a member of staff who works here. | :01:13. | :01:16.
When we came in all the teachers were on edge, you could tell. | :01:17. | :01:20.
And when they were talking, you could hear something | :01:21. | :01:22.
The caretaker said that year six were on a London trip. | :01:23. | :01:27.
We pieced it altogether and realised that there was something going on. | :01:28. | :01:36.
Now, later today, the head teacher put out a statement | :01:37. | :01:38.
from Hotwells School, saying that although the children | :01:39. | :01:41.
were near the scene, they weren't directly caught up | :01:42. | :01:43.
in it, that they followed an emergency procedure | :01:44. | :01:47.
the children were safely put on board a coach. | :01:48. | :01:51.
Now, although all the children are safe, they are not | :01:52. | :01:54.
aware of what happened today in Westminster. | :01:55. | :01:59.
Well, the children from both schools are now heading back home tonight. | :02:00. | :02:02.
Our reporter Robin Markwell has been catching up with other people | :02:03. | :02:05.
from across the West who were caught up in the attack. | :02:06. | :02:09.
On Westminster Bridge, a car rammed into the crowds, | :02:10. | :02:14.
then a man armed with a knife forced his way | :02:15. | :02:17.
Journalists and politicians from the West found | :02:18. | :02:22.
themselves in the middle of the unfolding drama. | :02:23. | :02:25.
We'd heard a bang, me and my colleagues in room 12 | :02:26. | :02:28.
in Parliament were looking to see what that was, we suddenly saw | :02:29. | :02:33.
a policeman kind of being pushed into New Palace Yard. | :02:34. | :02:37.
It was strange because normally nobody is allowed in there apart | :02:38. | :02:40.
from MPs and those with passes, however, suddenly, he got | :02:41. | :02:44.
I now understand he had a knife in his hand. | :02:45. | :02:50.
I then saw a policeman approached him, all dressed in black, | :02:51. | :02:55.
They were told to stay inside their offices. | :02:56. | :03:05.
Among those caught up in the lockdown, was the Cotswold MP | :03:06. | :03:08.
I'm particularly concerned about my staff, who witnessed the whole | :03:09. | :03:13.
-- Of course, we all immediately after it happened, informed our | :03:14. | :03:25.
At the moment, we, a number of staff and members | :03:26. | :03:30.
of Parliament are locked in, right in the middle of Parliament. | :03:31. | :03:32.
We don't know when we will be allowed out. | :03:33. | :03:34.
The Bristol West MP Thangam Debbonaire took | :03:35. | :03:36.
to Twitter to describe the frightening scenes outside. | :03:37. | :03:38.
Salisbury MP John Glenn sent his thoughts and prayers | :03:39. | :03:40.
to the injured and the Wells MP James Heappey praised the | :03:41. | :03:43.
A children's author from mid-summer Norton happened to be | :03:44. | :03:52.
on Westminster Bridge at the time of the attack. | :03:53. | :03:54.
I was just walking across the bridge and suddenly a bus stopped | :03:55. | :03:58.
People came off the bus and they seemed very upset. | :03:59. | :04:02.
And then I saw what appeared to be a trainer by the side of the road | :04:03. | :04:06.
and then, on the other side of the road, there was a body | :04:07. | :04:09.
and when I looked further up there was another body and, | :04:10. | :04:13.
then, when I looked over the side of the bridge, | :04:14. | :04:15.
there appeared to be a body in the water as well. | :04:16. | :04:18.
The Prime Minister has convened an emergency meeting. | :04:19. | :04:20.
A counterterrorism enquiry is already underway but, for now, | :04:21. | :04:24.
people are still coming to terms with the shocking events | :04:25. | :04:28.
The Wells MP James Heappey had been waiting to vote behind | :04:29. | :04:36.
the Prime Minister when she was told about the attack. | :04:37. | :04:39.
He spoke to us in our 6.30pm programme from xx | :04:40. | :04:45.
He spoke to us in our 6.30pm programme from London | :04:46. | :04:48.
where he was in lockdown with other politicians. | :04:49. | :04:53.
I'm fine. It was a long afternoon and evening in which House of | :04:54. | :05:00.
Commons but we were there for our own safety and the house authorities | :05:01. | :05:04.
were executing a plan that they have developed well and rehearsed for and | :05:05. | :05:09.
so we were safe. My staff are very shaken. My hope overlooks Parliament | :05:10. | :05:13.
Square and they were drawn to the window by keeping the car crash into | :05:14. | :05:17.
the real and sadly that meant they were watching as the shooting | :05:18. | :05:22.
happened. And, when I left them this evening, they had to go to | :05:23. | :05:25.
Westminster Abbey to give evidence to the police and they were pretty | :05:26. | :05:30.
shaken up. This is really fear that has become reality here. It must be | :05:31. | :05:34.
hard to grasp. Yes, I think that it is hard to grasp. I sort of always | :05:35. | :05:42.
was aware of that that area and a new Palace yard was quite | :05:43. | :05:45.
vulnerable, that when the division bell rang, lots of MPs would be | :05:46. | :05:49.
making their way from their offices to the chamber. I don't think the | :05:50. | :05:55.
attack today was attacking a division but it was just a | :05:56. | :05:58.
coincidence that lots of MPs were underway to vote at the time of the | :05:59. | :06:03.
attack. It brings home to you how many police and security guards are | :06:04. | :06:06.
there at work in the Palace at Westminster and they do an amazing | :06:07. | :06:12.
job. One of them gave an amazing -- gave their lives today. Yet at the | :06:13. | :06:16.
time of the attack you were behind the Prime Minister, when she was | :06:17. | :06:19.
told the news. I was in the voting lobby and she was told the news | :06:20. | :06:23.
Nvidia matter-of-fact way. I wasn't privy to the exact words that | :06:24. | :06:28.
reduced. Someone came up to her and spoke to her and she was spoken -- | :06:29. | :06:33.
taken away. I was able to put one and one together soon afterwards | :06:34. | :06:37.
when I heard that she had been taken from the Parliamentary estate in a | :06:38. | :06:38.
hurry and that we were under attack. | :06:39. | :06:56.
Parliament will sit again tomorrow. How do you feel about that? I think | :06:57. | :06:59.
that is really important. We had to take a long walk back to the hotel I | :07:00. | :07:02.
stayed in this evening because of other cordons and I had a long walk | :07:03. | :07:04.
through central London to think about things. What happened today | :07:05. | :07:07.
was not an attack on the bricks and mortar of Westminster or even our | :07:08. | :07:10.
MPs, it was an attack on our democracy. What is amazing is that a | :07:11. | :07:12.
policeman stood has can to protect ours and to pick -- to protect | :07:13. | :07:15.
Parliament and our democracy. Wonder what -- what we must do to honour | :07:16. | :07:20.
his life is to go to work tomorrow and to continue to participate in | :07:21. | :07:23.
it. I will be in the gym first thing tomorrow morning and I suspect a lot | :07:24. | :07:26.
of colleagues will fuel the same way. What we must do is demonstrate | :07:27. | :07:30.
that these people who are motivated by the Sikh ideologies of | :07:31. | :07:33.
international terrorism don't win and that we continue to do the jobs | :07:34. | :07:38.
that we are elected to do and show that our democracy is much stronger | :07:39. | :07:41.
than any attack by an idiot like this. | :07:42. | :07:41.
Our home affairs correspondent Charlotte Callen is here. | :07:42. | :07:43.
What been the response here to the attacks in the west? | :07:44. | :07:46.
From the people that I have spoken to today, there is an overwhelming | :07:47. | :07:52.
sense that although we may be 100 miles away, that we have never felt | :07:53. | :07:57.
closer to our capital city. Of course, many people is your commute | :07:58. | :08:00.
to London either I need daily or weekly basis for work. We have at | :08:01. | :08:04.
school children caught up in this incident. There have been worried | :08:05. | :08:08.
family members here desperate to find their family members are safe | :08:09. | :08:12.
and well. There has been great sympathy and sadness from people | :08:13. | :08:15.
here to people and London. Of course, there's also been a visible | :08:16. | :08:21.
impact. Extra staff and British Transport Police patrolling our main | :08:22. | :08:24.
train station to reassure the public. | :08:25. | :08:27.
What about the response from the police forces? | :08:28. | :08:29.
I have spoken to all of them and they are monitoring the situation. | :08:30. | :08:42.
The most important thing to remember, we have intelligence | :08:43. | :08:46.
services -- intelligence services working here on a daily basis to | :08:47. | :08:50.
keep us safe. That happens across the whole country and it remains the | :08:51. | :08:54.
same. There has been a great expression of sadness from the | :08:55. | :08:57.
police year to the police in London for that officer that was stabbed | :08:58. | :09:01.
and killed. That is reflected by the Chief Constable of Wiltshire Police | :09:02. | :09:05.
who said that they stand shoulder to shoulder with their colleagues in | :09:06. | :09:06.
London. Lets take look at some of our other | :09:07. | :09:13.
news tonight and the parents of a seven year old boy who died | :09:14. | :09:16.
at Bristol Children's Hospital after a heart operation, have been | :09:17. | :09:19.
awarded ?100,000 in compensation. Luke Jenkins was moved out | :09:20. | :09:21.
of intensive care just days after his operation | :09:22. | :09:23.
because of a lack of beds. The Health Service Ombudsman says | :09:24. | :09:26.
there were "missed opportunities" and that Luke's parents will never | :09:27. | :09:28.
know if better care would The hospital says improvements have | :09:29. | :09:31.
been put in place since and failings Well, you can catch up | :09:32. | :09:35.
with the rest of the days news And there's continuing coverage | :09:36. | :09:38.
on the London attacks We're back tomorrow and I'll | :09:39. | :09:42.
leave you now with Ian Good evening. The forecast for | :09:43. | :09:55.
tomorrow, in some quite -- senses their pockets the conditions he saw | :09:56. | :09:58.
this morning, in terms of wet weather being genuinely -- generally | :09:59. | :10:03.
confined to one area of the region. It will be turning when they are as | :10:04. | :10:08.
the deer weaves on. -- day wears on. It is possible that those in the | :10:09. | :10:11.
South will see further patchy outbreaks of rain continuing through | :10:12. | :10:16.
the afternoon and into the evening. For the time being, and a filament | :10:17. | :10:19.
of clear sky, temperatures dropping away. Could be patches for current | :10:20. | :10:26.
and frost. Getting them to one or two Celsius fairly wiggly. Rain | :10:27. | :10:28.
continuing through the afternoon and into the evening. For the time | :10:29. | :10:31.
being, under a filament of clear sky, temperatures dropping away. | :10:32. | :10:33.
Could be patches for current and frost. Getting them to one or two | :10:34. | :10:38.
Celsius fairly wiggly. Read more of origin are at it as some patchy | :10:39. | :10:44.
rain. The northern extent open to that. Further northwards, the better | :10:45. | :10:48.
chance of retaining dryer where Friday afternoon. As I mentioned, it | :10:49. | :10:54.
will be turning quite easy or Wendy and temperatures, 10 Celsius, but | :10:55. | :10:58.
that wind-chill will add more. That will improve | :10:59. | :10:59.
It certainly was a pretty wet day across parts of the country, lots of | :11:00. | :11:16.
downpours around. This is a picture from Kent, not particularly nice. | :11:17. | :11:17. |
