Good evening. A hospital in Kent has been told it needs to improve

the way it cares for older people. The health watchdog, the Care

Quality Commission, found problems at the Darent Valley Hospital with

the way patients' dignity was maintained and the food they were

served. Our social affairs correspondent Yvette Austin joins

us now from the hospital. Yvette, what has brought these issues to

light? All of this comes from a single inspection on 28th March.

Two wards were looked at for elderly people. Moderate concerns

were identified. It implied an impact on health and well-being.

Some empty beds now, but in March the wards were full to overflowing

due to the -- due to the winter. A hospital put extra beds in and were

criticised not just for that but first patients' nutrition as well.

The report said the extra beds compromised people's privacy and

safety. The beds had no proper curtains or bowls and no emergency

knocks up to -- oxygen supply. The hospital has now taken action.

This is one of the wards where the emergency beds would have been. We

have now taken them down and they have been removed to stand by wards

so if anything happens we can transfer patients to there.

We have had a lot of effort to make sure that nurses are responsible

for making sure that elderly patients in particular to get

assistance with feeding when they needed.

And the patient's seemed -- the patients seemed reassured.

I have no complaints at all. staff of very caring.

The hospital has 28 days to report its improvement to the watchdog.

The commission was so concerned about his visit in March that it

decided to come back in mid- June. It saw improvements and saw that

they were working but the full report has yet to be published.

A witness has told Lewes Crown Court that the mother accused of

murdering her two young children repeatedly warned her to stay away

from their father. Alison Shimmens said that she and Paul Donnison did

not start a physical relationship until after his relationship with

Fiona Donnison was over. Donnison denies murdering her children Harry

and Elise. A school in Dartford is one of the

first in the country to ask parents to rent or buy tablet computers for

their children. Longfield Academy in Dartford has brought 1400 Apple

iPads. From September it will require all pupils to have one.

Parents are being offered the option to buy the gadget out right

for nearly �600 or rent one for �16 a month.

The second round of the Open Championship is drawing to a close

in Sandwich. A change in the weather conditions certainly helped

the golfers today, as well as providing perfect conditions for

the thousands of spectators. Ben Moore reports.

With Sandwich bathed in sunshine, crowds flocked to Royal St George's

fault could be the best day for watching the Open mack. With

massive support from all for his family, Andy Smith from Maidstone

teed off, watched or so by a celebrity golf fan. -- watched also.

I have been to every open next since 1981 that they have had here.

It is local and lovely. The calm conditions suggested a day

of low scores. But the course was still able to claim its victims.

He may not have made their cart but Andy is still proud of his open

The golfers, their families and the thousands of spectators will be

filled with amazing memories from Sandwich.
