Welcome to the programme. Tonight's top stories: Accused of conspiring | :00:10. | :00:15.
to sell missile parts to Iran, a Kent businessman will be extradited | :00:16. | :00:20.
to the US to face charges. We are live at the High Court, where | :00:20. | :00:23.
Christopher Tappin lost his legal fight. | :00:23. | :00:26.

for the illegal trade in China to be stopped. | :00:45. | :00:51.

And the Kent magician who has been teaching pupils a few tricks that | :00:55. | :01:05.
:01:05. | :01:13. | ||
Good evening. A retired a Kent businessman accused of trying to | :01:13. | :01:16.
export part to Iranian -- for Iranian missiles has lost his | :01:16. | :01:21.
appeal against plans to extradite him to the US to stand trial. | :01:21. | :01:25.
Christopher Tappin, the President of the Kent Golf Union, as always | :01:25. | :01:28.
claimed he believed he was exporting batteries to the European | :01:28. | :01:32.
car industry. He faces up to 35 years in jail if convicted in | :01:32. | :01:37.
America. Christopher Tappin now knows he | :01:37. | :01:40.
will probably face trial for conspiracy to export missile parts | :01:41. | :01:45.
in a Texan court. And absolutely devastated because I won't get a | :01:45. | :01:50.
fair trial. All my witnesses that in this country and we can't test | :01:50. | :01:55.
the evidence because the evidence is all in America, and we never had | :01:55. | :01:59.
the opportunity for the British courts to look at the evidence. | :01:59. | :02:03.
Christopher Tappin, who worked for a shipping firm, has always tonight | :02:03. | :02:06.
knowing the batteries he was helping to export were four Iranian | :02:06. | :02:09.
missiles. He said he believed they were for the car industry in the | :02:09. | :02:13.
Netherlands. He was trapped by US agents who had set up a fake | :02:13. | :02:19.
company which dealt with the deal. He was arrested at his home in 2010. | :02:19. | :02:23.
Last February, a judge ruled he could be extradited for trial in | :02:23. | :02:29.
America. Today, his appeal against that ruling was dismissed. | :02:29. | :02:34.
It is quite difficult to overturn an extradition decision from a | :02:34. | :02:38.
district judge up. The whole point of extradition with countries like | :02:38. | :02:42.
the United States and Europe is that we trust their legal systems, | :02:42. | :02:47.
they trust our legal systems. Christopher Tappin wants, though, | :02:47. | :02:53.
is to face trial here and he has some support. Liberty is calling on | :02:53. | :02:56.
a British judge to be able to consider whether it is in the | :02:56. | :03:00.
interests of justice for a person to be prosecuted in the UK or | :03:00. | :03:05.
shipped off to face the crumb of Exeter did -- extradition. The only | :03:05. | :03:12.
chance for him to avoid extradition now it lies with the Supreme Court. | :03:12. | :03:16.
A you can only appear to the Supreme Court. Now we have the | :03:16. | :03:19.
judgment, we are going to look through it to decide whether there | :03:20. | :03:24.
is a point of law and we are very hopeful there will be. For now, | :03:24. | :03:31.
Christopher Tappin's wait goes on. The number of pupils being expelled | :03:31. | :03:34.
from academies in Kent is disproportionate and a matter of | :03:34. | :03:40.
concern, according to educate and leaders. Last year, 237 pupils were | :03:40. | :03:45.
permanently excluded from schools and the county. Of those, 103 were | :03:45. | :03:50.
from council-run secondary schools but 95 were from independently run | :03:50. | :03:54.
academies, which make up just one third of the total schools in the | :03:54. | :03:57.
county. The council now wants to reduce the number of excluded | :03:57. | :04:05.
pupils from all schools to just 50 a year by 2015. | :04:05. | :04:11.
This former says the education system has failed her sons. I got a | :04:11. | :04:14.
phone call to say they want to exclude my son for the next four | :04:14. | :04:19.
days. Her elder son has severe dyslexia and has been excluded a | :04:19. | :04:22.
number of times for his behaviour. Last year, he was excluded | :04:22. | :04:28.
permanently. A I would rather they actually looked at the issue - why | :04:28. | :04:34.
is this boy being considered for exclusion? There has always got to | :04:34. | :04:37.
be an underlying reason and if they can find that and tackle that | :04:37. | :04:44.
reason, maybe there would be no need for an exclusion. He is one of | :04:44. | :04:48.
198 pupils excluded from secondary education last year. Nearly half of | :04:48. | :04:53.
those came from academies. One academy Head Teachers says he has | :04:53. | :04:57.
had to exclude two people's this year but it is a last resort. | :04:57. | :05:01.
have high standards and when we get to the stage where we are just not | :05:01. | :05:04.
working with that student and a continuing -- and they are | :05:04. | :05:09.
continuing to break the rules and disrupt and cause mayhem, we do | :05:09. | :05:14.
take that decision to permit Lee exclude. The council's education | :05:14. | :05:17.
committee has been a meeting today to work out how they can reduce | :05:17. | :05:24.
those numbers. -- permanently exclude. The council have | :05:24. | :05:28.
commissioned a report in how to progress. A very disappointing | :05:28. | :05:32.
figures. We have been seeing a decreasing trend in the number of | :05:32. | :05:36.
exclusions from school in the last five years, which has been very | :05:36. | :05:40.
positive. This has been disappointing to us in the last | :05:40. | :05:44.
year to see a rise. Carel weight of expelled pupils and their families | :05:44. | :05:50.
and says exclusions should be avoided. If you exclude any child | :05:50. | :05:55.
from school he will have a very negative impact on them. That is a | :05:55. | :06:00.
queer and resounding no to you. changes to exclusion policy may | :06:00. | :06:06.
come too late for this woman and her sons. She welcomes any changes | :06:06. | :06:10.
to the system. -- Clear and a resounding no. | :06:10. | :06:15.
Coming up: Eastbourne's dark past. A new film reveals the genteel | :06:15. | :06:23.
seaside town used to be a hotbed of rioting. | :06:23. | :06:28.
There are fears that cuts to the army due to be announced next week | :06:28. | :06:32.
could fall most heavily on Kent- based Gurkhas. More than 100 lost | :06:32. | :06:35.
their jobs because of cuts last year and there are concerns that | :06:36. | :06:41.
changes to the solders' employment terms following to one a lovely's | :06:41. | :06:47.
de 1009 campaign make the regiment vulnerable. -- Joanna Lumley's | :06:47. | :06:52.
campaign in 2009. In the second round of army cuts, | :06:52. | :06:55.
it is predicted that the Gurkhas will face more redundancies than | :06:55. | :07:00.
other regiments. That has led former Gurkhas to say this could be | :07:00. | :07:09.
the beginning of the end. Cutting down at this way indicates to me | :07:09. | :07:13.
that one day Britain will lose one of the bravest soldiers in the | :07:13. | :07:21.
world, and it's also raised -- embraced the very great history | :07:21. | :07:31.
:07:31. | :07:34. | ||
between two countries. -- deleted the history. As a result of changes | :07:34. | :07:44.
:07:44. | :07:47. | ||
to the Gurkha buts' employment terms, there were more than needed. | :07:47. | :07:53.
And none of us want to see more reductions in service of the | :07:53. | :07:57.
Gurkhas. If there of reductions and the numbers, we want to know why | :07:57. | :08:00.
they are being made and why the level of redundancies is being made. | :08:00. | :08:06.
Last year, 140 Gurkhas were made redundant with 12 months' notice. | :08:06. | :08:10.
To meet MoD targets, hundreds more could lose their jobs when the | :08:10. | :08:17.
announcement is made next week. Peter joins us from a barracks in | :08:17. | :08:22.
Folkestone. What have the MoD had to say? At a moment, the MoD are | :08:22. | :08:27.
saying that redundancies are merely speculation. The scale and which | :08:27. | :08:31.
rain to mince will be affected will not be announced until Tuesday - | :08:31. | :08:35.
but regiments will be affected. But they say that the Brigade of | :08:35. | :08:40.
Gurkhas is still overmanned. If there are cuts, it will be bitterly | :08:40. | :08:44.
opposed by the local community which holds them in huge regard. | :08:44. | :08:48.
This was the birthplace of the Decca justice campaign which saw | :08:49. | :08:53.
them give it equal rights to British soldiers. -- Gurkha it | :08:53. | :08:59.
justice campaign. But be but I do it has made them very expensive. | :08:59. | :09:03.
The father of a teenager left brain damage after being attacked in | :09:03. | :09:07.
Bexhill last year has banged the local community for their support. | :09:07. | :09:11.
16-year-old Mo Bourner was beaten unconscious in October. Since then, | :09:11. | :09:20.
many in the town have raised money to help with his rehabilitation. | :09:20. | :09:23.
Brighton University Medical student Mundill Mahil was worried that TV | :09:23. | :09:26.
executive Gagandip Singh was in danger from their gangster friends | :09:26. | :09:31.
one month before he was killed, an Old Bailey jury was told today. A | :09:31. | :09:34.
friend of Mundill Mahil told the court that some of her friends or | :09:34. | :09:38.
wanted to take matters into their own hands after Gagandip Singh had | :09:38. | :09:44.
allegedly attempted to rape her. Mundill Mahil denies murder. | :09:44. | :09:46.
A one a-month-old baby taken to hospital with serious injuries has | :09:46. | :09:52.
been released into the care of foster parents. A man and a woman | :09:52. | :09:56.
from Gravesend who were arrested on suspicion of the salt in December | :09:56. | :10:01.

hunting tigers and trading in their third and body parts, Ben numbers | :10:04. | :10:08.
have still been fallen catastrophically. Now a Sussex | :10:08. | :10:12.
Wildlife artist is leading a campaign for Tiger pommes in China, | :10:12. | :10:18.
where the animals are bred for the illegal trade in medicine, to be | :10:18. | :10:25.
shut down. -- tie get farms. Thai days in captivity here at the | :10:25. | :10:30.
Heritage Foundation near Ashford. They are given the best of care. | :10:30. | :10:34.
Away from their luxury confines, it is a different story, which | :10:34. | :10:40.
campaigners contend. Chinese tiger up bombs. They are farming taggers | :10:40. | :10:46.
on an industrial scale, like battery hens. Very small enclosures, | :10:46. | :10:49.
half-starved, being used as entertainment for tourists. They | :10:49. | :10:53.
are doing that because there is still a trade in tiger parts in | :10:53. | :10:58.
Tiger - and China. This artist is behind a new petition which he | :10:58. | :11:01.
hopes can soon be presented to the Chinese government. He wants the | :11:01. | :11:07.
ban on all trade in tiger parts properly enforced. We can't survive | :11:07. | :11:11.
on this planet if we destroy everything around us. Every species | :11:11. | :11:16.
we destroy it is our own self- destruction. A campaign to save the | :11:16. | :11:21.
tiger is also involving breeding programmes. These clubs are | :11:21. | :11:26.
Sumatran tigers of which there are only around 250 left in the world. | :11:27. | :11:30.
If and when the poaching is controlled, there may be a chance | :11:30. | :11:35.
for the recovery. We try to keep the captive breeding programme | :11:35. | :11:40.
going with the hope that we can, at some point in the near future, be | :11:40. | :11:45.
in a position where we can restock the wild in some shape. We cannot | :11:45. | :11:50.
turn the clock back and the world as they do from place to 100 years | :11:50. | :11:56.
ago but there is hope for the tiger. -- a different place. The campaign | :11:56. | :12:00.
is supported by many celebrities and last year, Jeremy Brown told | :12:00. | :12:03.
former model Samantha Fox that he would approach the Chinese | :12:03. | :12:08.
government. Let me raised it with the Chinese again. It will you? | :12:08. | :12:14.
course I will. Today, the Foreign Office said the minister has urged | :12:14. | :12:17.
China to operators zero-tolerance policy towards the trade. As for | :12:17. | :12:22.
the farms, the Chinese government says they help prevent poaching. | :12:22. | :12:31.
Campaigners disagree and say they only fuel it. Pressure is mounting. | :12:31. | :12:36.
This is her tonight's tot story: A retired a Kent businessman has lost | :12:36. | :12:41.
his High Court appeal against being extradited to the US on charges of | :12:41. | :12:45.
conspiracy to sell parts for Iranian missiles. | :12:45. | :12:47.
Christopher Tappin denies the charges and had fought against | :12:47. | :12:52.
going to America for trial, saying his ill or wife relied on him for | :12:52. | :12:58.
care. Also coming up: It help -- by a supply teacher is magic. | :12:58. | :13:03.
We need the supply teacher who has been paid to confuse youngsters in | :13:03. | :13:11.
the classroom. It was one of the most exciting | :13:11. | :13:17.
races at Brands Hatch ever. Now a Tommy Hill has made it to the big | :13:17. | :13:24.
Eastbourne has the reputation of being a somewhat genteel seaside | :13:24. | :13:27.
resort today, but in the early 1890s, a trip to the town on a | :13:27. | :13:32.
Sunday was often overshadowed by rioting. In fact, many people | :13:32. | :13:35.
visited Eastbourne just to view the spectacle as the Salvation Army | :13:35. | :13:38.
band openly defied the law by marching through the streets to be | :13:38. | :13:44.
met by organised gangs. The remarkable story is now the subject | :13:44. | :13:54.
:13:54. | :14:00. | ||
of a docudrama. They were called the skeleton army, a gang raised by | :14:00. | :14:06.
hotelier's, concerned about the Salvation Army's attitude to | :14:06. | :14:16.
:14:16. | :14:20. | ||
alcohol. They were hit with staves, the Salvation Army women had their | :14:20. | :14:29.
skirts pulled down, and were abused. The men were hit so that I am sure | :14:29. | :14:35.
there were many injuries, quite serious ones, sustained. The | :14:35. | :14:39.
Salvation Army marched in defiance of the Eastbourne improvement Act | :14:39. | :14:45.
which legislated against marching with music. Every Sunday, they | :14:45. | :14:51.
would take to the streets. Every Sunday, there would be battles. As | :14:51. | :14:55.
they marched along the seafront, it would not only be the bandsmen | :14:55. | :15:00.
attacked, but their instruments as well. This is one of the bugles | :15:00. | :15:04.
from the march, and as you can see, it has been bashed about by the | :15:04. | :15:09.
rioting. Now a drama by local film- makers aims to bring this piece of | :15:09. | :15:16.
history to live. It tells the story Of and Eastbourne fishermen who | :15:16. | :15:21.
tried to defend the marchers. were known as the Three Musketeers. | :15:21. | :15:28.
That is how it all started. And that the event before he became a | :15:28. | :15:34.
salvation must. He gave up the drink and took up the pledged. -- 8 | :15:34. | :15:38.
Salvation Army member. There is a piece of history to read that is | :15:38. | :15:47.
not known. It is a bit gritty! bylaw was repealed in 1892. The | :15:47. | :15:54.
most aggressive thing on the seafront but this sea gulls today. | :15:54. | :16:01.
-- are the sea gulls. It's a great premise for a TV show | :16:01. | :16:04.
- where magicians are sent into schools, pretending to be supply | :16:04. | :16:06.
teachers, and inexplicable, strange and magical things start happening | :16:06. | :16:16.
:16:16. | :16:17. | ||
in the classroom. One of the stars of the new BBC series starting next | :16:17. | :16:20.
week is Fergus Flannagan from Tunbridge Wells - we'll be speaking | :16:20. | :16:30.
:16:30. | :16:34. | ||
to him in a moment. But first, Wait until they, and you, see the | :16:34. | :16:43.
trick coming up. Remember, there is an egg and a piece of paper in the | :16:43. | :16:50.
jar. That micro fibre will begin to slowly absorbed. And now there is | :16:51. | :16:56.
just the paper! Their egg has gone! I cannot believe my eyes. | :16:56. | :17:00.
Well, earlier on today we sent Fergus out onto the streets of Kent | :17:00. | :17:09.
and asked him to work his magic. This is the eight of clubs. If you | :17:09. | :17:14.
watch it closely, you will see the moment it changes to the nine of | :17:14. | :17:23.
clubs. Now look in your hand. You have got their eight of clubs. | :17:23. | :17:29.
Don't let me force you to pick a card. Whatever you do, I might try | :17:29. | :17:38.
and influence you, but I want to know what the top card is. Eight of | :17:38. | :17:47.
clubs? You see! Now I will cut up to another card. I will use the | :17:47. | :17:54.
eight of clubs. Eight of spades. Is that book one? Kelly, thank you | :17:54. | :18:01.
very much that your time. -- is that the one. Can you just push the | :18:01. | :18:10.
card in for me? Oh my gosh! How did you do that?! | :18:10. | :18:15.
Fergus is with us now. The TV programme must have been fun to | :18:15. | :18:18.
make. What reaction did you get from the pupils when they | :18:18. | :18:27.
discovered you were a magician? children responded unbelievably. | :18:27. | :18:32.
They just went nuts! We were all worried because I remember being at | :18:32. | :18:38.
school, and when you had a supply teacher in, you thought "brilliant, | :18:38. | :18:45.
I will cause a riot!" but they have responded so well. When they found | :18:45. | :18:51.
out they would be on CBBC, then it was great. A did any tricks go | :18:51. | :18:58.
wrong? Thankfully not. And we did not get rumbled either. It was an | :18:58. | :19:03.
amazing piece of organisation from the production company and parents. | :19:03. | :19:08.
We cannot have you here without doing a bit of the magic here fast. | :19:08. | :19:18.
The of course not. A quick trick. Rob, left-handed? Yes. Place your | :19:18. | :19:26.
right hand on doubled the deck. Think of any card in your mind. And | :19:26. | :19:34.
then, on account of three, two, one, I want to change your mind to a new | :19:34. | :19:42.
card. I did that to avoid Kingswood is a common joys, and queens. -- A, | :19:42. | :19:48.
no choice. What is the card you are thinking of? I thought of the queen | :19:48. | :19:57.
of hearts. Very interesting. One card, I made a prediction on. You | :19:57. | :20:02.
chose the queen of hearts. Tell me, if you see anything that looks a | :20:02. | :20:10.
bit different, you might notice, there is one face down. Look at | :20:10. | :20:19.
that! That his magic! Thank you for coming in. Good luck with the | :20:19. | :20:22.
programme. Help! My Supply Teacher Is Magic is | :20:22. | :20:31.
on CBBC from next Tuesday. Talking of magic, last weekend's | :20:31. | :20:35.
football was all about the magic of the Cup, but tomorrow, all our | :20:35. | :20:38.
teams turn their attention back to the League. Neil Bell is in Chatham | :20:38. | :20:41.
for that, plus I understand you've got details of how a champion | :20:41. | :20:45.
superbike rider from the South East is set to become a star on the big | :20:45. | :20:50.
screen? When Tommy Hill, from Lingfield, | :20:50. | :20:52.
was crowned the 2011 British Superbikes Champion, it was after | :20:52. | :20:55.
one of the greatest races even seen at Brands Hatch. Now, his exploits | :20:55. | :20:59.
will be shown at 120 cinemas across the country in a new film charting | :20:59. | :21:09.
:21:09. | :21:10. | ||
all the drama of last season's extraordinary championship. You may | :21:10. | :21:19.
have never been to, or seemed, bike racing, but this film will grab you. | :21:19. | :21:28.
The film charts a highs and lows of last season, and its epic finale. | :21:28. | :21:35.
For local hero Tommy Hill, it was an opportunity to but the pain of | :21:35. | :21:41.
2010 behind him. There are a lot of knock backs in many sports. I have | :21:41. | :21:51.
:21:51. | :21:58. | ||
lost part of my internal body. To Basics month-long season came down | :21:58. | :22:08.
:22:08. | :22:17. | ||
to the last lap of a last race, He just had to win. This stand here | :22:17. | :22:22.
was basically the Tommy Hill fan club - flags and so on. That must | :22:22. | :22:28.
be used so much good, when you are sat here, on your bike and about to | :22:28. | :22:37.
set-off. It was fantastic. story is so gripping that Tommy | :22:37. | :22:40.
Hill says there are those that find it difficult to tell fact from | :22:40. | :22:47.
fiction. There is a make-up artist that birds holes in your arms. That | :22:47. | :22:55.
is all real. -- that put holes. I am not an actor. This is what the | :22:55. | :23:02.
film shows - if you seek gruesome scars, but is made. With the cinema | :23:02. | :23:07.
release around the country, the timing of's remarkable story could | :23:07. | :23:14.
inspire an audience well beyond his already huge army of fans. | :23:14. | :23:17.
Brighton take on Championship strugglers Bristol City at the Amex, | :23:17. | :23:19.
hoping that Craig Mackail Smith can rediscover his goal-scoring touch. | :23:19. | :23:22.
The Scottish international striker has only managed one goal since | :23:22. | :23:26.
September, but remains the Albion's leading scorer in the League. And | :23:26. | :23:29.
teenager Jake Forster Cayskey looks set to keep his place after two | :23:29. | :23:39.
:23:39. | :23:41. | ||
goals in two games. At the moment, or we could not get anyone. We are | :23:41. | :23:48.
still having problems. But I will not cried. | :23:48. | :23:50.
League One leaders Charlton have another tough test following their | :23:50. | :23:54.
FA Cup exit at Fulham. The Addicks travel to third place Sheffield | :23:54. | :23:57.
Wednesday hoping to avoid a third successive away defeat and maintain | :23:57. | :23:59.
their four-point lead at the top of the table. | :23:59. | :24:02.
Gillingham will be missing leading scorer Danny Kedwell for their trip | :24:02. | :24:05.
to promotion rivals Shrewsbury. And despite signing for the rest of the | :24:05. | :24:08.
season, Jo Kuffour is also doubtful with injury, so loan signing Gavin | :24:08. | :24:11.
Tomlin, who joined yesterday from Dagenham, looks set to make his | :24:11. | :24:19.
debut. He is a live wire. He can play right at the top, and he is a | :24:19. | :24:24.
tricky one. I am looking forward to working to him, and he will bring | :24:24. | :24:27.
something else to the table. League Two leaders Crawley Town, | :24:27. | :24:30.
who knocked Bristol City out of the Cup, travel to Bristol Rovers, | :24:30. | :24:32.
knowing that anything short of victory will probably see them | :24:32. | :24:35.
replaced at the top after just one League win from their last four | :24:35. | :24:45.
:24:45. | :24:48. | ||
games. Good news for Kent County Cricket Club - eight alone. Also | :24:48. | :24:54.
good for Sussex's cricketers. I do not think they will be too | :24:54. | :24:58.
disappointed as they sit by their swimming pool in AD five degrees! | :24:58. | :25:02.
Now a little bit of good news about Buster the cat, who's been found | :25:02. | :25:04.
after going missing almost six years ago. The 11-year-old Siamese | :25:04. | :25:10.
cross tabby was lost by owner Emma Spinks in Tunbridge Wells in 2006. | :25:10. | :25:13.
But he's now turned up fit and well at a vet's in Bearstead near | :25:13. | :25:17.
Maidstone. It's a mystery as to what he's been up to - but Emma | :25:17. | :25:20.
says he does have a history of climbing into cars, which might | :25:20. | :25:30.
:25:30. | :25:38. | ||
climbing into cars, which might explain how he got there! What a | :25:38. | :25:44.
difference a day makes! Yesterday, temperatures in double figures, | :25:44. | :25:51.
today, six degrees. Over the weekend, we have got a frosty and | :25:51. | :25:59.
foggy start with plenty of sunshine. But it will be feeling chilly again. | :25:59. | :26:06.
Today - high-pressure in control of things. Plenty of sunshine around. | :26:06. | :26:12.
Temperatures noticeably struggling to get above six Celsius. Below | :26:12. | :26:17.
average for the first time in quite a while. Tonight, it clear skies | :26:17. | :26:25.
for us all. Temperatures dropping to lows of-four degrees. Just | :26:25. | :26:35.
:26:35. | :26:35. | ||
holding on to the coast their. Some dense fog patches forming as well. | :26:35. | :26:42.
High-pressure stays in a control of things. Those winds adding a chilly | :26:42. | :26:49.
field to the day. Those pop patches will play in the afternoon, leaving | :26:49. | :26:54.
it descend spells of sunshine. Temperatures still between 5-seven | :26:54. | :27:03.
Celsius. Tomorrow night, a once that cloud cover players, | :27:03. | :27:10.
temperatures drop to freezing. -- cover it clears. Sunday a repeat of | :27:10. | :27:18.
Saturday. Monday, a very similar story as well. That high pressure | :27:18. | :27:27. |
