the front row - the Kent photographer whose career spans war

:00:49.:00:59.
:00:59.:01:04.

We start tonight with breaking news. A 14 year-old girl has died at a

:01:04.:01:11.

school in Kent. She collapsed during a key lesson at the the

:01:11.:01:19.

Angley School. How much do we know about what happened?

:01:19.:01:24.

The girl has been named locally. She was taking part in a PE lesson

:01:24.:01:28.

at about half-past 11 this morning when she collapsed. Efforts were

:01:28.:01:33.

made to revive her. She was raised to the hospital in Ashford but she

:01:33.:01:38.

could not be saved. Many pupils were worried, they were called for

:01:39.:01:41.

a special Assembly later in the day where it was announced that she had

:01:41.:01:45.

died. Tonight, some of her friends have been talking about what

:01:45.:01:53.

happened. Everyone was crying, everyone was shocked. No one was

:01:53.:02:01.

talking at all. It won't be the same. It was quiet. Everywhere was

:02:01.:02:06.

silent. Everybody was in shock. No one could believe it. The she was a

:02:06.:02:11.

really nice person. She was really excited about everything. She was a

:02:11.:02:17.

really good dancer and singer. The police have been called in to

:02:17.:02:24.

investigate. What have they said? The police say they are treating

:02:24.:02:27.

the death as unexplained, although they do not believe it is

:02:27.:02:32.

suspicious. Be around 900 pupils at the school. It is a specialist

:02:32.:02:36.

sports college so what happened here has caused a great sense of

:02:36.:02:41.

shock and upset. The family of a Kent businessman

:02:41.:02:47.

extradited to the US to face arms dealing charges says the news that

:02:47.:02:51.

we he has finally been granted bail has come as a huge relief.

:02:51.:02:55.

Christopher Tappin was flown to Texas in February accused of

:02:55.:02:58.

selling batteries for Iranian missiles. He has been held in jail

:02:59.:03:02.

ever since then but will be released later this week. In a

:03:02.:03:07.

moment, we will speak to his son. First, this report.

:03:07.:03:13.

This is Christopher Tappin with his wife Elaine at Heathrow just before

:03:13.:03:17.

he was deported to the US in February. He was initially held in

:03:17.:03:22.

solitary confinement for 23 hours a day in jail in New Mexico. He has

:03:22.:03:26.

now been granted bail with his family having to pay 50,000 US

:03:26.:03:35.

dosser -- $50,000 and pledged a bond to secure his release.

:03:35.:03:38.

It is obviously a great relief for his family and 10. There was no

:03:38.:03:42.

reason why he should not be granted bail. There was a concern that he

:03:43.:03:48.

might have been a slight risk and that he may not have had the means

:03:48.:03:54.

to escape. -- a risk of flight. His bail comes with a number of

:03:54.:04:04.
:04:04.:04:07.

At least he will be uncivilised conditions with access to the radio

:04:07.:04:11.

when newspapers and some degree of normality and in that environment,

:04:11.:04:16.

he can now make a big decision - does he accept the American system

:04:16.:04:22.

of plea bargain or does he plead innocent and go for a full trial?

:04:22.:04:24.

Issue of the extradition treaty between the UK and the US was

:04:24.:04:28.

discussed by David Cameron and Barack Obama during the Prime

:04:28.:04:33.

Minister's recent visit to Washington. Having looked at

:04:33.:04:37.

Christopher Tappin going voluntarily to the United States...

:04:37.:04:42.

It was raised again with Theresa May at a home affairs select

:04:42.:04:52.

committee today. His MP says he has been lobbying hard. I have made

:04:52.:04:58.

appeals to the Foreign Office. We discussed his case in great detail

:04:58.:05:02.

with the Foreign Office minister responsible. The Foreign Office is

:05:02.:05:06.

following it extremely closely. may be able to walk free eminently

:05:06.:05:11.

but still faces a trial on offences which carry a sentence of up to 35

:05:11.:05:16.

years in jail. A I am joined by his son, Neil.

:05:16.:05:23.

Thank you for being with us. Do you know when your father is likely to

:05:23.:05:27.

be let out of jail? We do not know the details as to when, Bobby

:05:27.:05:32.

expected to be tomorrow or Thursday. -- but we expected to be tomorrow.

:05:32.:05:37.

He does not have a passport. He needs to get himself to Texas from

:05:37.:05:41.

New Mexico. He needs to get a flight or have a very long car

:05:41.:05:48.

journey. We need to figure that out. He has spent quite a lot of time in

:05:48.:05:53.

solitary confinement, how has he been coping? The answer is, I am

:05:53.:05:59.

not entirely sure. We have had very limited contact with him. That has

:05:59.:06:06.

been one of the most distressing things for us. Not only that, he

:06:06.:06:10.

had no reading material, he had no watch to tell the time and the

:06:10.:06:15.

lights were left on 24 hours a day, so mentally, it is very very

:06:15.:06:21.

difficult to go through. We were concerned about that, so we

:06:21.:06:26.

sentence and crosswords in the post. They never appeared in the prison.

:06:26.:06:31.

The envelope appeared but nothing was inside. Your father, as we

:06:31.:06:36.

heard in the package, he is friends with the leader of the UK

:06:36.:06:39.

Independence Party, he is suggesting you should go down the

:06:39.:06:44.

plea bargain route. Is that likely? It is not likely, as far as I know.

:06:44.:06:47.

The last conversation I had with him before he left, he is adamant

:06:48.:06:51.

he will return home as an innocent man. He is adamant that he will

:06:52.:06:56.

have his day in court and fight these charges. I tend to believe

:06:56.:07:00.

him when he says that. He's going to work hard now that he is out on

:07:00.:07:07.

bail. Thank you.

:07:07.:07:15.

In a moment... Businesses call for the council to reconsider its 400%

:07:15.:07:25.
:07:25.:07:26.

rise in parking charges on the He has grown so frustrated after

:07:26.:07:29.

waiting years for a kidney transplant that Nathanael Adams

:07:29.:07:33.

from Eastbourne has turned to the Internet to try and find a donor.

:07:33.:07:37.

He is now 28 but was born with effect of kidneys and first

:07:37.:07:42.

received a transplant as a three- year-old. 17 years later, they

:07:42.:07:45.

failed and for last nine years, he has been on the waiting list for an

:07:45.:07:48.

operation. What compels a young man to trawl

:07:48.:07:53.

the Internet looking for an organ donor? Doctors have said to me that

:07:53.:07:59.

my best option of a transplant is from a live donor. I have a lot of

:07:59.:08:04.

antibodies from my previous transplant, with a live donor, the

:08:04.:08:07.

transplant can be arranged at a certain date and that gives an

:08:07.:08:12.

opportunity for the antibodies in the to be removed. For the first

:08:12.:08:17.

few years of his life, he was fed through tubes. Aged three, a kidney

:08:17.:08:21.

transplant allowed him to do normal things. He could play football and

:08:21.:08:26.

later became a windsurfing instructor. 17 years later, the

:08:26.:08:31.

kidney failed. Now, he has to go to hospital three times per week for

:08:31.:08:36.

powers of dialysis. He has been getting very fed up the last out --

:08:37.:08:45.

the last couple of years. Just over 1000 living donor kidney

:08:45.:08:55.
:08:55.:09:02.

transplants were carried out in the More and more people are coming

:09:02.:09:07.

forward and saying, I would like to donate a kidney during my lifetime.

:09:07.:09:10.

More people are signing the organ Donor Register. At the moment,

:09:10.:09:14.

there are a team 0.5 million people signed up on the organ Donor

:09:14.:09:17.

Register. Obviously, we're always looking to increase that number

:09:17.:09:27.
:09:27.:09:28.

fools not his father believes the Government need to make it easier

:09:28.:09:34.

for people to donate. Netted 10 people believe in it, but when it

:09:34.:09:39.

comes to the crunch, seven out of 10 refuse the harvest of the organs.

:09:39.:09:44.

The 28 year-old want his life back. Someone has the power to give it to

:09:44.:09:54.

him. It would be a precious gift. For now, the waiting goes on.

:09:54.:09:58.

The man accused of murdering a Sussex supermarket worker that he

:09:58.:10:02.

met for sex told his girlfriend in prison letters that he had wanted

:10:02.:10:07.

his victim to confess to being a paedophile. Christopher Hunnisett,

:10:07.:10:10.

seen here at an earlier hearing, wrote the letters after being

:10:10.:10:19.

charged with the murder. He claimed he had done them order to prevent

:10:19.:10:22.

him from putting children. The Crown Court heard there was no

:10:22.:10:25.

evidence that he was a paedophile and the trial continues.

:10:25.:10:29.

There have been significant delays for motorists in East Sussex after

:10:29.:10:33.

articulated lorry overturned at a roundabout. The emergency services

:10:33.:10:37.

were called to the incident this morning.

:10:37.:10:42.

A bus driver accused of murdering a 22 year-old Sussex Women in Poland

:10:42.:10:47.

has apologised in court to her family. Catherine Zaks from steeple

:10:47.:10:51.

cross was a student at the University of Kent when her body

:10:51.:10:57.

was found by a railway embankment in Krakow. 44 year-old Miroslaw L

:10:57.:11:00.

told Katharine's parents in court that he had got into an argument

:11:00.:11:04.

with her after he fell asleep -- after she fell asleep on his bus

:11:04.:11:12.

and would never forgive himself. We are joined live by a Polish

:11:12.:11:21.

reporter from Krakow. What can you tell us about what happened today?

:11:21.:11:28.

The court to the testimony of Miroslaw L today. The driver said

:11:28.:11:33.

he is very sorry for what he had done. He would do anything to undo

:11:33.:11:37.

what happened, but it is not possible. He said he never planned

:11:37.:11:41.

to kill anyone, especially not a girl he had never met before. The

:11:41.:11:47.

girl who took his boss that fatal night last summer. He said that he

:11:47.:11:52.

had lost his temper, he had had a bad shift, he had some family

:11:52.:11:56.

problems, financial problems, and then the girl did not want to exit

:11:56.:12:03.

the bus, Catherine Zaks fell asleep. She wanted the driver to give her a

:12:03.:12:08.

ride back home. He did not want to do it. Finally, when she left the

:12:08.:12:14.

bus, he went after her with a pike and started to punch her. Then, he

:12:14.:12:19.

said, he panicked and ran away. The trial can be complicated and take

:12:19.:12:25.

several months but after all, Miroslaw L and face a very tough

:12:25.:12:29.

punishment. He can be imprisoned for life.

:12:29.:12:34.

A jury has been shown dramatic footage of a fire that claimed the

:12:34.:12:37.

lives of three generations of the same family. Three people are on

:12:37.:12:47.
:12:47.:12:49.

trial for the murder of the women. The jury at the court also saw CCTV

:12:49.:12:53.

pictures which appeared to show two of the defendant filling petrol

:12:53.:13:00.

cans before the fire started. 2:30am and the fire brigade is

:13:00.:13:05.

answering a call to a house fire. People have gathered outside, many

:13:05.:13:09.

trying to help. In the upstairs bedroom, smoke pouring from the

:13:09.:13:14.

window. It is here that the mother and child are trapped. Despite

:13:14.:13:18.

death from -- despite desperate efforts to save them, we said Crook

:13:18.:13:28.
:13:28.:13:35.

and her son no one were overcome by smoke and died. -- her son, no one,

:13:35.:13:43.

-- Noah. The prosecution said that he and his co-defendant were Ns

:13:43.:13:48.

garage, filling up cans of petrol, minutes before the fire started.

:13:48.:13:52.

CCTV then tracked the car making its way towards the home. The jury

:13:52.:13:59.

also heard a 999 call made by the third defendant, one of the

:13:59.:14:09.
:14:09.:14:19.

She was said to be waiting at a house in Maidstone, and was told

:14:19.:14:22.

when to ring and a call from the two defendants on their way back

:14:23.:14:29.

from Chatham. The only two survivors that night were Melissa's

:14:29.:14:39.
:14:39.:14:44.

mother and her brother. All three Ambulances had to be diverted away

:14:44.:14:52.

from a Sussex hospital this afternoon after it ran out of water.

:14:52.:14:55.

Tanks at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath ran dry

:14:55.:14:58.

after the system that should have automatically refilled them failed.

:14:58.:15:01.

South East Water has pumped enough water into them to supply the site

:15:01.:15:03.

for 24 hours while it investigates what went wrong.

:15:03.:15:05.

The Highways Agency is investigating potential safety

:15:05.:15:07.

improvements on the A259 in East Sussex, following four serious

:15:07.:15:11.

accidents in two days. A cyclist was fatally injured in one of the

:15:11.:15:17.

incidents in Bexhill earlier this month. City councillors in Brighton

:15:17.:15:20.

and Hove say they are listening to the concerns of traders who say

:15:20.:15:23.

their takings have suffered since parking charges in the city were

:15:23.:15:25.

dramatically increased. The cost of seafront parking rose

:15:25.:15:29.

from 4 to 20 a day three weeks ago. The Green-run council hopes

:15:29.:15:32.

putting up prices in busy areas will encourage visitors to use

:15:32.:15:42.
:15:42.:15:42.

public transport, or park elsewhere. And we will consider adjustments

:15:42.:15:47.

but we need to give it a longer so we have some real data to be going

:15:47.:15:54.

on with. We need more than three- week this information.

:15:55.:15:59.

Fiona, what have business leaders been saying to you today?

:15:59.:16:04.

This is normally a busy part of the city, next to the seafront and

:16:04.:16:08.

moments away from the beer but take a look down this road, hundreds of

:16:08.:16:13.

empty spaces. Businesses say it has been like that all day since the

:16:13.:16:17.

council doubled the tariff more than one month ago. Businesses so

:16:17.:16:21.

it is having a massive impact on the trade. It seems like it will

:16:21.:16:26.

finish the business off. There was nobody around. You can see the

:16:26.:16:31.

shops are closing down. When I first moved to Brighton you could

:16:31.:16:37.

park for a pound and now it is Dot Mac it is ridiculous. Everybody

:16:37.:16:44.

would say the same. It is a bit steep. Have you seen this business?

:16:44.:16:48.

Definitely. The council say they are listening to people and they

:16:48.:16:52.

are listening about the complaints from businesses. They say it is

:16:52.:16:56.

early days but say they have also introduced these new machines way

:16:56.:17:00.

you can pay by card. Businesses say it is not enough to get people to

:17:00.:17:06.

return here. This is our top story tonight:

:17:06.:17:09.

A 14-year-old girl has collapsed and died during a PE class at a

:17:10.:17:13.

school in Kent. Nicola Payne was a pupil at the Angley School in

:17:13.:17:14.

Cranbrook. Also in tonight's programme:

:17:14.:17:17.

From the troubles in Northern Ireland to the cream of the world's

:17:17.:17:23.

music stars, the Kent photographer who's seen it all.

:17:23.:17:27.

After another day of showers, it seems tomorrow will bring us even

:17:27.:17:35.

heavier rain. I will have a full forecast at the end of the

:17:35.:17:39.

programme. New figures released by the RSPCA

:17:40.:17:42.

show there's been a significant increase in the number of animal

:17:42.:17:45.

cruelty cases in the South East. Convictions under the Animal

:17:45.:17:47.

Welfare Act rose by nearly a quarter last year, with some

:17:48.:17:52.

shocking cases recorded. Alex Beard has tonight's Special Report. You

:17:52.:17:58.

may find some of the pictures distressing.

:17:58.:18:03.

The man seen here kicking a puppy was sentenced to eight weeks in

:18:03.:18:07.

prison and banned from keeping animals for five years. The dog has

:18:07.:18:12.

since been we homed but news of an increase in cruelty cases is

:18:12.:18:16.

upsetting news to his owners. rage to be honest. You just do not

:18:16.:18:22.

treat dogs like that. It was horrendous and we were concerned

:18:22.:18:27.

about what he got but he has turned out brilliant. He has lovely.

:18:27.:18:30.

people in Kent have been reported for animal cruelty than anywhere

:18:30.:18:35.

else in the South East. In 2011 49 people in Kent were convicted for

:18:35.:18:42.

the treatment of animals, seven in East Sussex and 17 in West Sussex.

:18:42.:18:45.

The RSPCA say there is never an excuse for animal cruelty but

:18:45.:18:48.

financial strain on households may be a contributing factor to the

:18:48.:18:53.

number of animals needing we coaming. We have noticed more

:18:53.:18:57.

animals being abandoned, whether they are tied to the gates of the

:18:57.:19:01.

centre or left at beds or dumped other side of the road and we are

:19:01.:19:04.

getting animals left in properties when people move out will go away.

:19:04.:19:09.

There is definitely an increase in now. It is hard to tell at a local

:19:09.:19:14.

level because we are always so busy. When Penny was found as a puppy she

:19:14.:19:17.

was in a crate of her own field. Her owners were banned from keeping

:19:17.:19:23.

animals for two years and fined. Prosecution is a last resort for

:19:23.:19:28.

the RSPCA but some cases are so severe that they are left with no

:19:28.:19:36.

choice. In a career spanning 50 years, Kent

:19:36.:19:39.

photographer Brian Aris has taken evocative pictures of hundreds of

:19:39.:19:46.

famous faces, from Bob Geldof to the Queen. Now a new exhibition of

:19:46.:19:49.

his work at Whitstable Art Gallery traces the roots of his work, from

:19:49.:19:52.

gritty photo journalism to rubbing shoulders with A-list celebs. Robin

:19:52.:20:02.
:20:02.:20:15.

If you have been alive any time from the 1960s up until now, he

:20:15.:20:20.

will find pause for more than a few nostalgic thoughts in here. Whether

:20:20.:20:23.

it was the Troubles in Northern Ireland or mingling with the

:20:24.:20:28.

aristocracy of rock, pop -- pop and acting, Brian Aris has been in

:20:29.:20:32.

amongst them. My art teacher suggested I joined the photographic

:20:32.:20:39.

club and I loved it. I loved and started messing around with a

:20:39.:20:44.

camera. It is magical. He is best known for his portraits of

:20:44.:20:48.

celebrities looking somehow off- the-cuff casual and yet iconic at

:20:48.:20:54.

the same time. I had that in my loo for years because I think it is

:20:54.:20:58.

great. It is just cheeky. Some, like Debbie Harry and Paula Yates

:20:59.:21:03.

became close friends. Paul Yates turned up one day and wanted to be

:21:03.:21:10.

a model and I said she was too small. She was too short in height.

:21:10.:21:14.

But I did not know porn at that time and she was a very tenacious

:21:14.:21:24.
:21:24.:21:25.

Lady -- Paula and she said she would hang on and do it. She

:21:25.:21:29.

brought her boy friend in, bought from the brink and rats, suddenly

:21:29.:21:36.

at found myself shooting pop. passion was in part forged on the

:21:36.:21:42.

streets of Belfast which produced some of his favourite pictures.

:21:42.:21:49.

just did not know much about the history or the politics. It was an

:21:49.:21:52.

injustice and that sits with you very strongly through the rest of

:21:52.:21:56.

your life once you have seen that experience. The exhibition is here

:21:56.:22:04.

until June. The man with a photographic memory.

:22:04.:22:08.

He really has seen it all. What a fantastic career!

:22:08.:22:10.

One of this summer's brightest Paralympic medal hopes has begun

:22:10.:22:13.

the season by breaking her own European record. Racing against

:22:13.:22:16.

able bodied athletes in the 100- metres in Crawley, Sophia Warner

:22:16.:22:19.

from Hove, who has cerebal palsy, came last, but was thrilled with

:22:19.:22:27.

her time of 16.44 seconds. It is such a good sign. I just came

:22:27.:22:31.

up from a standing start so I was not even in my blog so that is also.

:22:31.:22:36.

I have got my 200 to do now but I am over the moon. I cannot really

:22:36.:22:40.

speak. I'm speechless for the first time ever.

:22:40.:22:43.

It was a truly memorable day in 1993 when the Queen visited

:22:43.:22:46.

Ramsgate, the first time a lifeboat had been named and launched by the

:22:46.:22:49.

current monarch. And it was an extra special moment for RNLI

:22:49.:22:52.

crewman Colin Wimbush, who got to introduce his baby son to the Queen.

:22:52.:23:01.

For the latest in our My Jubilee Photo series, this is Colin's story.

:23:01.:23:07.

My photograph was taken on 16th July, 1993. I am on the left and my

:23:07.:23:12.

wife is on the right holding my 16 week-old eldest son. The Queen

:23:12.:23:19.

leant over and said he was totally oblivious to it all because he was

:23:19.:23:25.

fast asleep. She asked if we would have his name down for the crews so

:23:25.:23:28.

he could be a future crew member. You have the Queen coming to the

:23:28.:23:35.

town is a live for everybody. It was a wonderful, momentous occasion.

:23:35.:23:39.

It was amazing she is on our money and a coins and she's talking to us

:23:39.:23:44.

about our son! My mother wrote to the Queen on his first birthday

:23:44.:23:47.

sending her a copy of the photograph and inviting her to his

:23:47.:23:54.

first birthday party. We received a letter back from the Palace saying

:23:54.:23:59.

that they could not make it to the birthday Party but thank you for

:23:59.:24:04.

the invitation. My photo is so special to me because my eldest son

:24:04.:24:09.

is now 19 but he was 16 weeks at the time and a photograph with him

:24:09.:24:13.

with the Queen looming over him and talking about them is just a

:24:13.:24:19.

captured moment that will never leave me. Bless him in his little

:24:19.:24:22.

sailor's hat! That was Colin Wimbush's story, and

:24:22.:24:25.

staying with the Jubilee photo theme, we've got a project of our

:24:25.:24:33.

own that needs your help. Would you like to take part in

:24:33.:24:37.

creating a unique piece of art for the Queen's diamond jubilee and see

:24:37.:24:42.

your photo hanging in an art gallery? We are making a photo

:24:43.:24:47.

mosaic of Her Majesty. It is going to be a unique picture of the Queen

:24:47.:24:52.

made up of thousands of pictures of you. This piece of art will be hung

:24:52.:24:57.

here in this Gallery in Eastbourne throughout the Jubilee. Log on to

:24:57.:25:02.

our website and send us your photo. They can be colour or black and

:25:02.:25:07.

white, recent or from years ago. Very soon we'll be deciding the

:25:07.:25:12.

picture of the Queen your photos will recreate. Go to our website to

:25:12.:25:22.

find out how you can become part of the bigger picture.

:25:22.:25:26.

That us check on the weather now. That us check on the weather now.

:25:26.:25:28.

Surprisingly there was rain on the way!

:25:28.:25:33.

That is right and quite a lot of it! There has been the odd glimmer

:25:33.:25:35.

of sunshine this evening for many of us but it has not been all doom

:25:36.:25:41.

and gloom. Tomorrow there will be a lot of rain and it will really mean

:25:41.:25:44.

business. A yellow warning in place so you do have to be aware that it

:25:44.:25:48.

can have impact on your day. Heavy rain throughout the morning for

:25:48.:25:52.

many of us and at the same time some fairly strong winds. In the

:25:52.:25:56.

meantime a few showers are heading our way this evening but they

:25:56.:25:59.

should clear by the early hours of the morning and it will be

:25:59.:26:03.

temporarily dried. As you can see on the mat behind me it will not

:26:03.:26:08.

take long before it gets very wet again. By dawn tomorrow we will see

:26:08.:26:13.

heavy rain heading our way and there will be gusts of up to 60 mph

:26:13.:26:20.

along the south coast. Even in land we should see gusts of up to 50 mph.

:26:20.:26:24.

The temperatures are not as low as last night, if you even notice

:26:24.:26:28.

amidst all this wet-weather. Throughout the morning that rain

:26:28.:26:33.

will continue. It will still be windy. By lunchtime the worst of

:26:33.:26:36.

the rain should have cleared but still quite a few showers to come.

:26:36.:26:44.

Just a few breaks and possibly the odd glimmer of sunshine. Come

:26:45.:26:49.

tomorrow night it is still going to be a wet picture. More rain is

:26:49.:26:53.

heading our way and as we move into Thursday, it is going to be rather

:26:53.:27:00.

wet once again. A slightly less cold start to the day. The

:27:01.:27:05.

temperatures are picking up the little but throughout Thursday, wet

:27:05.:27:09.

weather through the morning until lunchtime but by later on we will

:27:09.:27:12.

start to see clearer skies and possibly even some pleasant

:27:12.:27:19.

sunshine in the South East. The temperatures are still remaining

:27:19.:27:23.

quite similar to today and tomorrow. For the rest of the week, a lot of

:27:23.:27:28.

wet weather still to come because the outlook is still rather gloomy.

:27:28.:27:31.

As you can see here, a lot of rain to come but temperatures are

:27:31.:27:34.

picking up. Thank you, it looks a bit like last

:27:35.:27:38.
