Welcome to South East Today. I'm Bryony MacKenzie. And I'm Rob Smith. | :00:00. | :00:10.
Tonight's top stories: The safety of mothers and babies put at risk. The | :00:11. | :00:14.
damning assessment of Kent's biggest maternity unit. I couldn't even go | :00:15. | :00:24.
and see my baby because I had a wheelchair. We'll be reporting live | :00:25. | :00:28.
from the Medway Maritime Hospital with the latest details and | :00:29. | :00:29.
reaction. Patients as old as 81 | :00:30. | :00:31.
as old as 81 say I Pat sexually abused by their doctor. He | :00:32. | :00:34.
Back on track. Damon Hill relives his Formula One days at a Kent Go | :00:35. | :00:49.
Kart track in aid of the stars of the future. | :00:50. | :00:56.
And a modern`day Belle of the Ball. The 15`year`old schoolgirl from Kent | :00:57. | :00:57.
crowned World Hip Hop Champion. Good evening. A shortage of midwives | :00:58. | :01:13.
and a lack of equipment are putting the safety of mothers and babies at | :01:14. | :01:19.
risk at Kent's biggest maternity unit, a damning report has found. | :01:20. | :01:24.
The latest findings at the Medway Maritime Hospital come after it was | :01:25. | :01:28.
put into special measures in July following an investigation into high | :01:29. | :01:32.
patient death rates. The Care Quality Commission says the hospital | :01:33. | :01:35.
failed to meet any of the six standards it assessed and is calling | :01:36. | :01:38.
for managers to take "urgent action". | :01:39. | :01:51.
Baby Amber Lee was born at 7:30am. Even when I was in labour, there was | :01:52. | :01:58.
no one with us. But inspectors have concerns about the care and | :01:59. | :02:03.
treatment women have been receiving. Jennifer says she was failed by the | :02:04. | :02:07.
Medway Maritime when her son was born prematurely. I felt shoved | :02:08. | :02:14.
aside by the staff. I couldn't even see my baby because I needed a | :02:15. | :02:18.
wheelchair. I didn't get a photo of my baby. Inspectors found emergency | :02:19. | :02:26.
equipment was not checked appropriately, which potentially put | :02:27. | :02:30.
mothers and babies at risk. Planning and delivery of care did not ensure | :02:31. | :02:36.
the safety and welfare of women. There were not enough midwives to | :02:37. | :02:40.
give effective care. Shelley says it was after she gave birth that | :02:41. | :02:47.
problems began. I was put onto a ward where there were people who had | :02:48. | :02:52.
not given birth yet, so not a lot of nurses around to help and come and | :02:53. | :02:58.
check were OK. The hospital has been told to take urgent action. Midwives | :02:59. | :03:07.
on duty are dedicated, hard`working and making sure they are responding | :03:08. | :03:11.
to individual needs but there is the risk of harm is to individuals | :03:12. | :03:14.
because there are not enough people around to support them. The hospital | :03:15. | :03:21.
says it is in the process of appointing 25 new midwives. Is this | :03:22. | :03:30.
hospital saved? Personally, it is. Even if... I judge that on the basis | :03:31. | :03:40.
of working with our midwives. Generally speaking, it is safe. The | :03:41. | :03:44.
hospital were now face further inspections. | :03:45. | :03:47.
This is just the latest in a series of damning reports into failures at | :03:48. | :03:50.
the Medway Maritime Hospital over the last few months. In May, | :03:51. | :03:52.
managers launched an investigation after a senior consultant claimed | :03:53. | :03:55.
Accident and Emergency services were "dangerously unsafe". In July, the | :03:56. | :03:59.
Trust that runs the hospital was put into special measures by the | :04:00. | :04:01.
Government after an investigation into higher than average death rates | :04:02. | :04:04.
identified concerns over standards of care. And in August, the | :04:05. | :04:09.
hospital's mental health crisis unit was condemned as a "poor quality | :04:10. | :04:12.
environment" by NHS managers who said patients needed to be moved to | :04:13. | :04:15.
better facilities elsewhere as soon as possible. But the MP for | :04:16. | :04:21.
Gillingham says he believes the situation will improve. The hospital | :04:22. | :04:34.
has to improve its services. It has got a new senior management team and | :04:35. | :04:37.
I know they are working exceptionally hard to turn things | :04:38. | :04:39.
around. Simon Jones is at the Medway | :04:40. | :04:42.
Maritime Hospital now. Simon, what further checks will there now be at | :04:43. | :04:51.
the hospital? There will be another unannounced inspection. If things | :04:52. | :04:55.
don't improve, the inspectors have the power to close down maternity | :04:56. | :04:59.
services here, although no one is talking about that happening at this | :05:00. | :05:04.
stage. But the report paints a picture of a do what `` of a divide | :05:05. | :05:12.
between midwives and management. One midwives said there is a concern | :05:13. | :05:15.
that if they do raise problems with management, they might be shouted | :05:16. | :05:21.
and treated like idiots. The inspectors find this cannot | :05:22. | :05:23.
continue. Hospital managers now have until | :05:24. | :05:25.
November second to tell inspectors exactly what they plan to do to make | :05:26. | :05:29.
the improvements the Care Quality Commission has demanded to turn the | :05:30. | :05:34.
situation around. Women who claim they were sexually | :05:35. | :05:37.
assaulted by their GP have told a jury his examinations left them in | :05:38. | :05:43.
pain, bleeding and feeling violated. Six patients say Dr Babatunde | :05:44. | :05:46.
Oshunisi assaulted them at a medical centre in Strood, near Rochester. | :05:47. | :05:52.
The oldest was 81. He denies the charges and says he acted properly | :05:53. | :06:03.
at all times. Women had come to this clinic | :06:04. | :06:07.
trusting a doctor would help them. Instead it has been said one of the | :06:08. | :06:11.
GPs carried out a series of assaults. One patient said he | :06:12. | :06:21.
examined her breast when she complained of bowel problems. | :06:22. | :06:32.
He had carried out a series of gratuitous intimate examinations. | :06:33. | :06:50.
Both of the women giving evidence said that although they felt deeply | :06:51. | :06:56.
unhappy with what had happened, they felt that as a doctor, they must | :06:57. | :07:01.
trust him. It was only one further allegations of assault against other | :07:02. | :07:04.
women were made public that they felt they must come forward. An | :07:05. | :07:09.
81`year`old woman who said you was also assorted will give her evidence | :07:10. | :07:14.
tomorrow. The doctor denies all charges. | :07:15. | :07:20.
In a moment: The alarming rise in wild bird trapping in the South | :07:21. | :07:22.
East. A woman from Sussex who's suffered | :07:23. | :07:35.
anonymous abuse via the internet for the past two years says she feels | :07:36. | :07:38.
cheated after the Crown Prosecution Service recommended that no charges | :07:39. | :07:41.
should be brought against two men arrested on suspicion of computer | :07:42. | :07:47.
misuse. Nicola Brookes from Brighton likened the ordeal to being "chased | :07:48. | :07:51.
by a pack of wolves". She made international headlines after | :07:52. | :07:53.
so`called internet trolls falsely accused her of being a paedophile | :07:54. | :08:03.
and drug dealer. She has been hounded by Internet | :08:04. | :08:07.
trolls for the last two years but today, Nicola was told that because | :08:08. | :08:11.
she interacted or engaged with trolls online, no one will face | :08:12. | :08:17.
prosecution. They are adding insult to injury by blaming the victim! It | :08:18. | :08:23.
is far too easy to say to me and many other victims, you started it. | :08:24. | :08:31.
It all began two years ago when she posted messages of support for an X | :08:32. | :08:36.
factor contestant who was thrown off the show. Within minutes, she became | :08:37. | :08:38.
a target of hate mail. If somebody is calling you a | :08:39. | :09:02.
paedophile or prostitute or drug dealer and there are 15 trolls on | :09:03. | :09:07.
you all at once like a pack of animals, you do answer back. I don't | :09:08. | :09:14.
regret doing it. Cases of Internet abuse have risen dramatically but | :09:15. | :09:18.
legal experts say they are still covering new ground. When you're | :09:19. | :09:23.
dealing with new law, you want a very clear`cut case to bring to | :09:24. | :09:28.
court because it would damaging if people are found not guilty in | :09:29. | :09:31.
court. Other people would think it was a green light for them to harass | :09:32. | :09:37.
people on the Internet. Sussex Police say what they appreciate this | :09:38. | :09:42.
has been a difficult time, they consider the case closed. What | :09:43. | :09:47.
message does this send out now to victims? What message does this send | :09:48. | :09:53.
out to the abuser? Nicola says she feels cheated and is taking legal | :09:54. | :09:57.
advice on whether she can challenge the decision. Chrissie Reidy | :09:58. | :09:59.
reporting and she joins us from Brighton Police Station. Chrissie, | :10:00. | :10:02.
what have Sussex Police said about the investigation? Sussex Police | :10:03. | :10:09.
tell us they are satisfied they conducted a detailed and thorough | :10:10. | :10:14.
investigation. The CPS tell us there was insufficient evidence to support | :10:15. | :10:20.
a realistic conviction. Nicola told me she is angry and disappointed. | :10:21. | :10:24.
She says it feels as though the authorities have sided with the | :10:25. | :10:28.
Internet trolls so she is seeking legal advice to see how or if she | :10:29. | :10:33.
can take this forward. Tributes have been paid in | :10:34. | :10:35.
Parliament this afternoon to a soldier from West Sussex who was | :10:36. | :10:39.
killed in Afghanistan. The body of Lance Corporal James Brynin from | :10:40. | :10:42.
Shoreham was repatriated yesterday. Both the Prime Minister David | :10:43. | :10:45.
Cameron and the leader of the opposition Ed Miliband commended him | :10:46. | :10:48.
for the service he'd given to his country Detectives investigating the | :10:49. | :10:51.
death of an Italian teenager in Kent have charged four men with his | :10:52. | :10:53.
murder. 19`year`old Joele Leotta died in | :10:54. | :10:56.
hospital after he was attacked in Maidstone on Sunday night. It is | :10:57. | :10:59.
clear from the tributes he was a highly talented and professional | :11:00. | :11:01.
soldier. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at | :11:02. | :11:05.
this difficult time. He has made the ultimate sacrifice and we must never | :11:06. | :11:10.
forget him. Four Lithuanian men have been remanded in custody and will | :11:11. | :11:13.
appear before Medway magistrates tomorrow. Six other people have been | :11:14. | :11:22.
arrested in connection with the incident. | :11:23. | :11:26.
The quality of work and training available to prisoners has | :11:27. | :11:28.
"plummeted", a new report by the Chief Inspector of Prisons has | :11:29. | :11:32.
found. It also highlights failings at the Tinsley House detention | :11:33. | :11:35.
centre near Gatwick where a doctor documented injuries to one prisoner | :11:36. | :11:37.
that were consistent with torture, only for a caseworker to write later | :11:38. | :11:41.
that allegations of torture were not credible. It is a very good | :11:42. | :11:52.
detention centre that humanely treats those who are awaiting | :11:53. | :11:59.
deportation, but any concerns raised in a particular case by | :12:00. | :12:03.
professionals, it is important that is followed up by the Home Office. | :12:04. | :12:06.
Our political editor Louise Stewart joins us from Westminster. Louise, | :12:07. | :12:09.
there's damning criticism for some of our other prisons, too. | :12:10. | :12:19.
Absolutely. In Sheppey, the inspector found staff were not | :12:20. | :12:23.
confident in dealing with emergency situations and would never enter a | :12:24. | :12:28.
cell alone, even if the prisoner's life was at risk. In Dover, they | :12:29. | :12:32.
found they were carrying out too many strip searches and said the use | :12:33. | :12:37.
of razor wire around the site was not proportionate to the level of | :12:38. | :12:40.
security needed there. They also found problems in a lack of | :12:41. | :12:45.
monitoring of prisoners in several other prisons. The findings of this | :12:46. | :12:51.
report show politicians have to be aware that cuts to funding to | :12:52. | :12:56.
prisons are impacting on inmates, staff and their ability to try and | :12:57. | :12:59.
prevent reoffending. The RSPCA says they're increasingly | :13:00. | :13:02.
concerned about illegal wild bird trapping in the South East. It's | :13:03. | :13:07.
believed that tens of thousands of birds are taken each year across the | :13:08. | :13:10.
UK, with individual birds selling for as much as ?50 to collectors and | :13:11. | :13:16.
breeders online. It's believed as many as 500 illegal trappers are | :13:17. | :13:19.
working in the country, and already this year, three Kent trapping sites | :13:20. | :13:22.
have been identified ` in Ebbsfleet, Faversham and Ashford. | :13:23. | :13:38.
Trapped. Wild goldfinches being held at an aviary in Northfleet. 15 | :13:39. | :13:43.
goldfinches were discovered by the RSPCA here at the home of this man, | :13:44. | :13:52.
caught red`handed. It's the job of the specialist operations unit to | :13:53. | :13:58.
try to catch the trappers. Officers need to protect their identity. I | :13:59. | :14:03.
have been involved in hundreds of operations to deal with the | :14:04. | :14:08.
possession of these birds, the taking of them and the unlawful | :14:09. | :14:13.
selling of them. It is massively widespread and tens of thousands of | :14:14. | :14:20.
birds, I think, each a year are caused to suffer through these | :14:21. | :14:24.
activities. No one knows the true scale of the crime because birds can | :14:25. | :14:29.
be caught in people 's back gardens. There was evidence of such of the | :14:30. | :14:33.
garden in the man of Northfleet. We are on a public foot path. You have | :14:34. | :14:39.
got people downhill on a daily basis. Here is whether site was set | :14:40. | :14:47.
up. The gentleman had set up a camouflage area where he could and | :14:48. | :14:54.
watch the birds. He had it set to a net, which he would pull a string | :14:55. | :14:58.
and the net would catch anywhere up to five or ten birds at a time. This | :14:59. | :15:05.
trap was found there, too. This is eight typical cage trap. Probably | :15:06. | :15:13.
sings its heart out all day. They will come down. There will be food | :15:14. | :15:20.
in this section. This is a collapsible perch. You got yourself | :15:21. | :15:28.
a ?50 worth of bird. Others can be caught on sticks covered in blue. | :15:29. | :15:35.
The RSPCA is hoping that by showing bird traps, members of the public | :15:36. | :15:41.
might report sightings. This is our top story tonight: A | :15:42. | :15:45.
shortage of midwives and a lack of equipment are putting the safety of | :15:46. | :15:48.
mothers and babies at risk at Kent's biggest maternity unit, a damning | :15:49. | :15:52.
report has found. The latest findings at the Medway Maritime | :15:53. | :15:56.
Hospital come after it was put into special measures in July following | :15:57. | :15:58.
an investigation into high patient death rates. | :15:59. | :16:01.
Also in tonight's programme: She's the Belle of the Ball, but hold the | :16:02. | :16:10.
gown! We speak to the 15`year`old Kent schoolgirl wowing and winning | :16:11. | :16:19.
at the World Hip Hop Championships. Our mild and changeable weather | :16:20. | :16:23.
continues for tomorrow. It will be settled, wet and windy, though, as | :16:24. | :16:30.
we go into Friday. Damon Hill was the son of a Formula | :16:31. | :16:34.
One star who went on to fulfill his potential by winning the world | :16:35. | :16:39.
title. Henry Surtees was the son of another Grand Prix legend, John | :16:40. | :16:42.
Surtees, but he tragically never had the chance to prove himself on the | :16:43. | :16:45.
biggest stage, killed in a freak accident at Brands Hatch when he was | :16:46. | :16:50.
just 18. Today, both Damon Hill and John Surtees were at Buckmore Park | :16:51. | :16:54.
Go Kart track in Chatham to fundraise for an education centre | :16:55. | :17:06.
there in Henry's memory. You would normally find Damon Hill | :17:07. | :17:11.
driving something more powerful than a go cart but that did not stop him | :17:12. | :17:20.
getting up to speed. It's a very exciting sport. A lot of young | :17:21. | :17:31.
people want to have a go karting. There is a huge grass`roots sport | :17:32. | :17:35.
there and it is a lot of fun. Fun but not without risks. Today's event | :17:36. | :17:41.
remembers Henry Surtees who died of heart `` who died at brands hash. | :17:42. | :17:46.
Now his father was to raise money for an education centre here. He | :17:47. | :17:52.
says this is where Henry learned computing skills through racing. | :17:53. | :17:56.
That was largely inspired by what he was doing in connection with his | :17:57. | :18:00.
karting. Analysing data and what he had done on the corners and there | :18:01. | :18:06.
are lots of opportunities out there, not just as drivers, but actually is | :18:07. | :18:12.
engineers and support staff. If we can inspire a fewer youngsters to | :18:13. | :18:18.
come along and get on a career path, then we will achieve something. | :18:19. | :18:22.
Young racers say they always appreciate a helping hand. I see a | :18:23. | :18:31.
lot of my friends not getting the education as other young kids have. | :18:32. | :18:38.
You need a fallback plan. It is hoped to Henry 's legacy will see | :18:39. | :18:42.
his peers excel on and off the track. | :18:43. | :18:52.
There's no pickled sharks or unmade beds, but artist Bryan Senior's | :18:53. | :18:56.
is a masterclass of life ` what we see every day, including striking | :18:57. | :19:01.
scenes of his home town of Tunbridge Wells. Collectors praise his ability | :19:02. | :19:06.
to capture moods and now a new exhibition of his work is on display | :19:07. | :19:10.
at London's Court Gallery. Robin Gibson's live in Tunbridge Wells. | :19:11. | :19:14.
Robin, he may not grab the headlines as much as other contemporary | :19:15. | :19:17.
artists, but Bryan Senior still has quite a following. He is in his 70s | :19:18. | :19:29.
and has been selling his work all his life. For his new show, they | :19:30. | :19:34.
have been going back to people who bought his work in the 50s and 60s. | :19:35. | :19:39.
But I reckon I have had the best viewed today. I have seen him in his | :19:40. | :19:43.
element in his own home. It's a colourful odyssey. A journey around | :19:44. | :19:55.
his house, its walls lined with his paintings is a journey through his | :19:56. | :19:56.
past. Remarkably, he never went to art | :19:57. | :20:10.
school, but this has been his life 's work and passion. This is a very | :20:11. | :20:28.
frequently seen view. I feel as if I am a stranger somewhere, nothing is | :20:29. | :20:34.
quite real, so I painted. I have a real connection with the world once | :20:35. | :20:39.
I have painted it. And the world means real places and people? That's | :20:40. | :20:48.
right. I admire abstract art. But it doesn't give me much to chew on. A | :20:49. | :20:54.
walk around Tunbridge Wells reveals how it is a real world captured in | :20:55. | :20:58.
mood and atmosphere, all in graphic detail. The new exhibition focuses | :20:59. | :21:06.
on his early years, a time to reflect on what an artist 's life is | :21:07. | :21:10.
meant then and might mean to others in the future. If they are | :21:11. | :21:14.
determined to do it and don't mind the lean times and don't mind doing | :21:15. | :21:23.
without comforts and family, it would be unfair to bring up children | :21:24. | :21:29.
on an artist 's salary. It's an artist 's colourful catalogue, | :21:30. | :21:33.
telling a story of a life of painting, painting the real world he | :21:34. | :21:35.
sees where ever he may be. hear a few cynics cheering those | :21:36. | :21:55.
comments on abstract art! He would be in the frame. The exhibition is | :21:56. | :22:00.
now open. If you are in the neighbourhood, it is well worth a | :22:01. | :22:04.
look. Peter Taylor earned his first win as | :22:05. | :22:07.
interim manager as Gillingham defeated struggling Notts County 2`1 | :22:08. | :22:10.
last night. Chris Whelpdale opened the scoring with a low drive and | :22:11. | :22:13.
then turned provider as Danny Kedwell ran on to his flick on to | :22:14. | :22:24.
score his sixth goal of the season. Callum McGregor scored a solo effort | :22:25. | :22:27.
for the visitors with ten minutes to go but the Gills held on. But | :22:28. | :22:30.
Crawley's seven`game unbeaten run came to an abrupt end with a 3`0 | :22:31. | :22:35.
home defeat by Port Vale. They were getting chances and they score a | :22:36. | :22:39.
goal and it's a nervous last few minutes. Fair play to the players. | :22:40. | :22:44.
They have worked extremely hard. We can defend a little bit better than | :22:45. | :22:49.
that to not give other teams too many chances. Midfielder Louis Dodds | :22:50. | :22:55.
put the visitors ahead after a mix`up between Paul Jones and Joe | :22:56. | :23:01.
Walsh. Ben Williamson made sure of the points for Vale in the second | :23:02. | :23:05.
half, running from the halfway line before beating the keeper. | :23:06. | :23:16.
She's just 15 years old but Kent schoolgirl Belle Fisher is already | :23:17. | :23:19.
an international dance champion. Not content with winning the | :23:20. | :23:21.
International Dance Organisation's European Hip Hop title, she's now | :23:22. | :23:24.
added the World Championship to her collection. It means she's the | :23:25. | :23:27.
first`ever dancer to hold both titles simultaneously. | :23:28. | :23:38.
This is the moment Belle Fischer won the European hip`hop championship. | :23:39. | :23:47.
Now she has added the world title to her collection. Back home in Herne | :23:48. | :23:53.
Bay, she is keen to pass her skills onto dancers of all ages. I danced | :23:54. | :24:02.
about 20 times to to the final, so to get that far, even the second | :24:03. | :24:07.
round, I was so pleased. To get the final is a massive achievement for | :24:08. | :24:11.
me. To dance against different people I don't normally dance | :24:12. | :24:17.
against as well. But it is more than just an award winning dancer as she | :24:18. | :24:29.
choreographed this routine. She's very kind. She's really good at | :24:30. | :24:34.
teaching us because she breaks the dance up so we can understand it | :24:35. | :24:42.
properly. Very happy that she got all of them awards. I'm really proud | :24:43. | :24:47.
of her winning all of them trophies. It's just a really, like, clever how | :24:48. | :24:54.
she has been able to get to that stage and dance. Diversity have | :24:55. | :25:03.
helped make street dance popular and Bell hopes her success will rub off. | :25:04. | :25:17.
Quite a mixed bag over the next couple of days. Tomorrow, mostly | :25:18. | :25:24.
settled. But it will not last. Pretty stormy as we get into Friday. | :25:25. | :25:30.
We started today with showers but it brightened up nicely by the | :25:31. | :25:33.
afternoon and temperatures decent for this time of year. Highs of 17 | :25:34. | :25:41.
or 18 degrees. Look at those wins, though, they have been really | :25:42. | :25:47.
blustery. But they are easing off. With the lighter winds, we will see | :25:48. | :25:51.
mist and fog patches forming and temperatures call than they have | :25:52. | :25:55.
been recently. Overnight lows of eight or nine degrees. A little bit | :25:56. | :26:00.
chilly as we start the day tomorrow. A ridge of high pressure | :26:01. | :26:05.
to thank for the several day and decent spells of sunshine throughout | :26:06. | :26:09.
the day. Still with those southerly winds. Temperatures again holding up | :26:10. | :26:17.
for this time of year: 15 or 16 degrees. A very pleasant feeling | :26:18. | :26:23.
afternoon. Again, it will not last. Tomorrow night, the winds will keep | :26:24. | :26:28.
up and the cloud will thicken. Dawn, outbreaks of heavy and | :26:29. | :26:35.
persistent rain. Lows of 13 or 14 degrees. A mild but wet and windy | :26:36. | :26:39.
picture as we start the day on Friday. That rain will move through | :26:40. | :26:45.
pretty quickly. The afternoon brightens up nicely. Temperatures 18 | :26:46. | :26:51.
or 19 degrees. But a very unpleasant start the day. We hold onto those | :26:52. | :26:56.
blustery showers we `` as we go into Saturday. By the afternoon, | :26:57. | :27:02.
brightening up a little bit. Sunday, it turns really stormy. Changeable | :27:03. | :27:07.
weather over the next couple of days. Lots of blue on the map as | :27:08. | :27:09.
well. On South East Today tomorrow: We'll | :27:10. | :27:12.
be speaking to 15`year`old Bethany Davy from Dartford who's part of a | :27:13. | :27:16.
young band aiming to be top of the pops... Well, actually, the poppies. | :27:17. | :27:21.
The Poppy Girls, whose fathers all serve with the Armed Forces, will be | :27:22. | :27:24.
singing the official 2013 Poppy Appeal single and performing in | :27:25. | :27:27.
front of the Queen at the Royal Albert Hall next month. | :27:28. | :27:35.
That looks great, doesn't it? | :27:36. | :27:41. |
