Welcome to South East Today, I'm Rob Smith. | :00:00. | :00:00.
A sharp rise in the number of anti-depressants being prescribed | :00:00. | :00:10.
in the south east, especially in more deprived areas. | :00:11. | :00:13.
We're live in Newhaven with the details. | :00:14. | :00:16.
More misery for Southern Rail commuters - RMT talks | :00:17. | :00:18.
with management break down and they'll walk out | :00:19. | :00:20.
the coroner's ruling, following the tragic | :00:21. | :00:30.
drowning of a teenager at a popular fishing lake. | :00:31. | :00:32.
Jack was in the place he loved, doing the thing he loved, | :00:33. | :00:39.
surrounded by people that he wanted to be with. | :00:40. | :00:41.
An independent review is to be carried out | :00:42. | :00:43.
into allegations of "horrific, cowardly and devastating" bullying | :00:44. | :00:45.
Wild dinosaurs wouldn't keep me away. | :00:46. | :00:52.
I'm very eager to see you in action, Vicar. | :00:53. | :01:00.
And what's the verdict on Clive Mantle? | :01:01. | :01:02.
The TV actor takes to the stage in Sussex in a classic play. | :01:03. | :01:11.
There's been a sharp rise in the number of anti-depressants | :01:12. | :01:14.
being prescribed in the South East - especially in areas of higher | :01:15. | :01:17.
Over the last two years, prescriptions are up by 16% | :01:18. | :01:21.
in Hastings and Rother, 15% in Thanet and 14% | :01:22. | :01:24.
In total, across Kent, Surrey and Sussex, almost | :01:25. | :01:30.
four million anti-depressant prescriptions were | :01:31. | :01:33.
Tonight, one Sussex MP says other vitally needed mental health | :01:34. | :01:43.
services are still not available, despite Government efforts | :01:44. | :01:45.
Yvette Austin has our exclusive report. | :01:46. | :01:52.
Jackie Bennett from Peacehaven fell into a downward spiral of depression | :01:53. | :01:58.
following a triple bypass heart operation three years ago. She is | :01:59. | :02:02.
recovering now after talking therapy but only after a bad experience with | :02:03. | :02:07.
antidepressant drugs. The first ones were the ones that made me even more | :02:08. | :02:11.
depressed than I was at the time. They knocked me into the middle of | :02:12. | :02:15.
next week and then I picked came sick with them so they tried me on | :02:16. | :02:20.
another and another and another and I got sick on all of them. I think | :02:21. | :02:23.
the doctors were doing what they thought was best for me at the time. | :02:24. | :02:31.
But the pills. The figures suggest more and more people are being | :02:32. | :02:35.
described the strength of increasing numbers are diagnosed with | :02:36. | :02:38.
depression. Charities are concerned not enough because it has been | :02:39. | :02:41.
putting on improving access to alternatives such as talking | :02:42. | :02:45.
therapies. Often we hear from professionals that because of the | :02:46. | :02:48.
problems with their mental health services in their area, long waiting | :02:49. | :02:53.
times, or no alternatives, they will be only option is to give someone a | :02:54. | :02:57.
prescription of antidepressants because it is better than giving | :02:58. | :03:02.
them nothing. This doctor is a GB specialising in mental health. She | :03:03. | :03:06.
said some patients Berdych leave those with moderate to severe | :03:07. | :03:09.
symptoms need to take antidepressants at first to improve | :03:10. | :03:13.
the chances of a successful recovery using other methods. They have lost | :03:14. | :03:17.
most of Asian and they don't feel like going out, they do not feel | :03:18. | :03:20.
like meeting people, they don't feel like talking about their symptoms. | :03:21. | :03:24.
-- they have lost their motivation. The antidepressants give them the | :03:25. | :03:29.
nudge to access the type of activities and treatment that will | :03:30. | :03:32.
go to prevent them getting symptoms in the future. Last month, the Prime | :03:33. | :03:38.
Minister pledged new support to tackle mental health issues. What I | :03:39. | :03:41.
am announcing the first step in our plans to transform the way we deal | :03:42. | :03:45.
with mental health problems. The government has pledged ?1.3 billion | :03:46. | :03:49.
for mental health services but tonight a former minister for | :03:50. | :03:52.
families and children called for more money to go to where it is | :03:53. | :03:57.
really needed. It is absolutely crucial that more money goes into | :03:58. | :04:02.
mental health, it goes in early, particularly to children is, one in | :04:03. | :04:07.
ten of school-age children will have some form of mental illness and the | :04:08. | :04:11.
early working at the back, the more likely we are to stop that becoming | :04:12. | :04:15.
a problem into adulthood as well. The Department of Health says | :04:16. | :04:18.
targets have been exceeded but it is striving to improve further. | :04:19. | :04:19.
Yvette Austin reporting and she's live tonight in Newhaven. | :04:20. | :04:21.
Yvette, is there an explanation for the rise in the number of | :04:22. | :04:24.
It is not entirely clear but the figures do showed that the cases are | :04:25. | :04:33.
higher in these more deprived towns around the coast of these derbies. | :04:34. | :04:36.
Other possibly think the more people are willing to go to their GPs with | :04:37. | :04:42.
depression as the stigma of mental health decreases or it is perhaps | :04:43. | :04:46.
GPs are just getting better at spotting the symptoms. Whilst it | :04:47. | :04:50.
must be said that these antidepressants are increasing in | :04:51. | :04:52.
their prescriptions, it must also be said that people are getting better | :04:53. | :04:57.
access to talking therapies but not as quickly as they would like. | :04:58. | :04:59.
Thank you. Commuters on Southern | :05:00. | :05:00.
Rail face another day It follows the acrimonious breakdown | :05:01. | :05:02.
of talks yesterday that were aimed at finding a resolution | :05:03. | :05:06.
between the RMT Union RMT union members will walk out | :05:07. | :05:08.
for 24 hours next Wednesday, claiming that driver-only operation | :05:09. | :05:15.
of trains is unsafe. We're still fighting to get every | :05:16. | :05:18.
role, a safety critical role, ensure that as a guard | :05:19. | :05:21.
on every train. Disabled passengers have told us | :05:22. | :05:31.
several times, we have been inundated with phone calls | :05:32. | :05:35.
that is already nearly impossible for them to plan a journey | :05:36. | :05:37.
because there are not people, enough people on the stations | :05:38. | :05:40.
and not enough people on The fight goes on as far | :05:41. | :05:42.
as we are concerned. Let's cross live to our | :05:43. | :05:46.
reporter Briohny Williams Briohny, what's the reaction tonight | :05:47. | :05:48.
to this latest strike? I asked to speak to someone from | :05:49. | :05:58.
Southern Rail this evening but no one was available for comment. They | :05:59. | :06:02.
did send a statement saying they are clearly disappointed that the RMT | :06:03. | :06:07.
have all this action that will inflict misery on its passengers. It | :06:08. | :06:12.
says it will try and run a full surface as much as possible. -- | :06:13. | :06:19.
servers. This is the 29th day of industrial action. This dispute has | :06:20. | :06:22.
been going on for nearly a year. Commuters I have been speaking to | :06:23. | :06:25.
our clearly exasperated. But it's disrupting | :06:26. | :06:27.
everyone's lives, it's just, you know, | :06:28. | :06:30.
it's a shame, really. I think we've become a little bit | :06:31. | :06:32.
impervious to this, it's more of the same but that | :06:33. | :06:34.
is very disappointing. We are moving to Hayward Heath | :06:35. | :06:36.
on the back of what happened last year, | :06:37. | :06:44.
we can't take it any more. A conclusion needs to be made one | :06:45. | :06:46.
way or another and quickly because there is only so much | :06:47. | :06:49.
that people can take. The union that has been involved in | :06:50. | :06:59.
this long-running industrial dispute is the train drivers union Aslef and | :07:00. | :07:04.
tomorrow we're going to find out whether or not their action against | :07:05. | :07:12.
southern is actually over. That is right. After two weeks of | :07:13. | :07:17.
negotiations earlier this month, Southern and as luck reach an | :07:18. | :07:19.
agreement which members will be voting on. Tomorrow the ballot | :07:20. | :07:27.
closes. -- Aslef. If the drivers agree, the dispute will be over. We | :07:28. | :07:32.
have heard anecdotally it is not clear-cut, we do not know what is | :07:33. | :07:34.
going to happen. If they did agree to what is being put on the table it | :07:35. | :07:39.
means more months of uncertainty for commuters. | :07:40. | :07:41.
Thank you. In a moment - the unique | :07:42. | :07:43.
new exhibition, enabling artists with disabilities to illustrate | :07:44. | :07:46.
the challenges they face. The mother of a popular teenager | :07:47. | :07:52.
who drowned at a popular fishing lake in Kent has spoken out | :07:53. | :07:55.
for the first time, saying "He was in a place he loved, | :07:56. | :07:58.
doing a thing he loved. His death was an | :07:59. | :08:01.
unfortunate accident". Jack Morrisson from Hartley died | :08:02. | :08:04.
just before Christmas while out fishing at lakes | :08:05. | :08:08.
in Sutton-at-Hone, near Dartford. This afternoon a coroner ruled it | :08:09. | :08:10.
as "death by misadventure". He excelled at everything. An | :08:11. | :08:33.
exceptional fisherman, an exceptional footballer. Jack | :08:34. | :08:37.
Morrisson was even a musician. His friend rate this song after he died. | :08:38. | :08:47.
-- wrote this song. He never sat and rested for a minute. He may have | :08:48. | :08:52.
only had 16 years but in the 16 years, he packed in more than I | :08:53. | :08:57.
think I have done in my lifetime. Jack Morrisson had been fishing | :08:58. | :09:01.
since he was four years old. Just before Christmas, he set up on a | :09:02. | :09:05.
lake near his Dartford home but then he vanished. Today the inquest into | :09:06. | :09:08.
his death heard how his band the following day, only 12 feet from the | :09:09. | :09:14.
bank and seven foot of water. He was apparently a very strong swimmer but | :09:15. | :09:19.
obviously being December, it was cold, Jack at the appropriate | :09:20. | :09:24.
clothing but unfortunately that appropriate clothing is big, and | :09:25. | :09:31.
heavy and probably dragged him in. In the two months since Jack's | :09:32. | :09:35.
death, his many friends have raised ?18,000 so his fishing club can | :09:36. | :09:38.
build classrooms and hold competitions in his name. His family | :09:39. | :09:42.
want to scatter his ashes in the lake. When I take his ashes back to | :09:43. | :09:50.
the lake, he will be there for all eternity, wandering around, messing | :09:51. | :09:53.
around with other people's rods. That gives me some comfort. Although | :09:54. | :10:00.
a life without Jack in it is a very hard thing to face. It is | :10:01. | :10:05.
heartbreaking. And Jack's sister now has to do face a life without her | :10:06. | :10:14.
big Brother which is incredibly sad. He had been approached by a | :10:15. | :10:16.
professional football clubs between Dover career in fishery -- dream of | :10:17. | :10:22.
a career in fishing management. And she joins us from Maidstone, | :10:23. | :10:24.
where the inquest took place. What more did the coroner SA? | :10:25. | :10:35.
He said that we will probably never know just how or why Jack Morrisson | :10:36. | :10:41.
ended up in the lake that day. He was a very experienced fisherman, he | :10:42. | :10:46.
had been seen by other anglers that day so it really just seems as | :10:47. | :10:49.
though it was a tragic accident. His body was found using special sonar | :10:50. | :10:55.
equipment and his family have decided to buy more of that | :10:56. | :10:59.
equipment and to present it to the tenth search and rescue team in | :11:00. | :11:07.
Jack's named next week. -- Kent. Thank you. | :11:08. | :11:10.
A woman refused treatment at three hospitals because no bed | :11:11. | :11:13.
was available would probably have survived if she'd been | :11:14. | :11:15.
treated more quickly, a coroner has concluded. | :11:16. | :11:17.
Doctors at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill wanted to transfer | :11:18. | :11:19.
Mary Muldowney to a specialist neurological unit, | :11:20. | :11:21.
after she suffered a bleed to the brain last July. | :11:22. | :11:23.
But the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and two London hospitals | :11:24. | :11:26.
refused their request and by the time the 57-year-old | :11:27. | :11:28.
was treated, it was too late to save her life. | :11:29. | :11:33.
The family of a murdered Sussex teenager have marked the 20th | :11:34. | :11:37.
anniversary of her death today by calling for Sussex Police | :11:38. | :11:39.
13-year-old Billie-Jo Jenkins was found dead at her home | :11:40. | :11:43.
Her foster father Sion Jenkins served six years | :11:44. | :11:51.
in jail for her murder but was subsequently acquitted, | :11:52. | :11:53.
He says "someone knows the answer" as to who killed Billie-Jo, | :11:54. | :11:57.
The Brighton and Hove Albion footballer Rohan Ince has been | :11:58. | :12:03.
cleared by a jury of attacking a nightclub bouncer with a bottle. | :12:04. | :12:07.
The 24-year-old midfielder had denied wounding with intent, | :12:08. | :12:10.
after an incident that left the bouncer with a serious | :12:11. | :12:14.
head injury in Windsor on Christmas Day 2015. | :12:15. | :12:18.
An independent review's been commissioned into allegations | :12:19. | :12:22.
of "horrific, cowardly and devastating" acts | :12:23. | :12:26.
of bullying against staff handling 999 calls at | :12:27. | :12:28.
the South East Coast Ambulance Trust, SECAMB. | :12:29. | :12:31.
The Trust has appointed Professor Duncan Lewis, | :12:32. | :12:33.
an expert in workplace conflict, to carry out the study. | :12:34. | :12:37.
As we reported last night, it follows a leaked report | :12:38. | :12:39.
describing a "climate of fear" at the Trust where two call handlers | :12:40. | :12:42.
attempted suicide because of the abuse they'd experienced. | :12:43. | :12:47.
Our reporter Simon Jones is live outside SECAMB's main call centre | :12:48. | :12:50.
Simon, the GMB Union which represents workers there says | :12:51. | :12:57.
the scale and intensity of the bullying is shocking. | :12:58. | :13:07.
Yes, this afternoon I have been speaking to the parent of a woman | :13:08. | :13:13.
who used to work it who attempted to take her own life, blaming the | :13:14. | :13:18.
bullying she was receiving. Now her parents Tommy the whole experience | :13:19. | :13:22.
had destroyed her. They said when she first raised concerns with | :13:23. | :13:26.
managers, it made the situation worse and they are not convinced | :13:27. | :13:29.
that the culture here has changed. But is a concern shared by the GMB | :13:30. | :13:34.
union who believe this latest investigation is too little too | :13:35. | :13:35.
late. The time has come when we need | :13:36. | :13:36.
a new regime in, one who's going to work with staff, | :13:37. | :13:39.
who's going to work with the public that they serve and | :13:40. | :13:41.
ultimately one who's going to stand up to government and say | :13:42. | :13:44.
we fundamentally need more money to run this if the people | :13:45. | :13:46.
of the south east of England are going to get the Ambulance Service | :13:47. | :13:50.
they deserve. Do we know how long it is going to | :13:51. | :13:56.
take for this review to be completed? | :13:57. | :14:02.
The professor is due to begin his work this week. He will be talking | :14:03. | :14:06.
to start and he is due to report back to management by the summer. We | :14:07. | :14:10.
asked to speak to the trusted aide that once again they declared to be | :14:11. | :14:14.
interviewed. In a statement, they did tell us this latest review had | :14:15. | :14:17.
been largely welcomed by staff and they say the allegations made were | :14:18. | :14:21.
investigated at the time and actually taken -- action taken when | :14:22. | :14:26.
necessary. in the number of anti-depressants | :14:27. | :14:27.
being prescribed in the south east, particularly in areas with higher | :14:28. | :14:33.
levels of poverty and deprivation. My Lords, here is what I say | :14:34. | :14:36.
to these two Kings. we chat with actor Clive Mantle | :14:37. | :14:49.
on his latest appearance And it's been a grey, | :14:50. | :14:52.
mild day with patchy rain. There's a bit more sunshine though | :14:53. | :14:55.
in the forecast over the next couple of days and I will | :14:56. | :14:57.
have the details for you in the They have become known | :14:58. | :15:01.
as the "Grindr murders" - four young men lured to meetings | :15:02. | :15:08.
through the gay dating app, then killed with drug overdoses - | :15:09. | :15:12.
their bodies dumped within yards of the flat of serial | :15:13. | :15:21.
killer Stephen Port. His conviction in November | :15:22. | :15:23.
raised serious questions about the police investigation - | :15:24. | :15:25.
and how officers failed to link The families of the victims - | :15:26. | :15:28.
including 21-year-old Daniel Whitworth from Gravesend - | :15:29. | :15:31.
have contributed to a new BBC documentary, to renew their campaign | :15:32. | :15:34.
for answers as to what went wrong. Sara Smith has tonight's | :15:35. | :15:37.
special report. Stephen Port was guilty of murder, | :15:38. | :15:48.
rape and assault. The families of his victims say the police are | :15:49. | :15:52.
guilty of not stopping him sooner. In this BBC Three documentary, their | :15:53. | :15:56.
struggle for justice is examined in detail. I just think that we were | :15:57. | :16:03.
hurried along to get a line drawn under those and it has left another | :16:04. | :16:12.
family, another family, besides ours, in this awful, awful position. | :16:13. | :16:19.
That's a huge mistake. Daniel from grades and was found dead in the | :16:20. | :16:24.
same spot, an east London graveyard as another man who died three | :16:25. | :16:29.
Wikileaks earlier. A man had been found a year earlier. All had met | :16:30. | :16:37.
gay dating sites. At inquest it was discovered that Daniel's suicide | :16:38. | :16:41.
note, actually written by Stephen Port, had never been checked by | :16:42. | :16:45.
handwriting experts. By the end of the summer 2014, three young men had | :16:46. | :16:49.
been buying dead. Despite the similarities, none of their deaths | :16:50. | :16:54.
was treated as suspicious. After the inquest of Daniel, his family asked | :16:55. | :16:58.
detectives to reopen their investigation. They were told that | :16:59. | :17:01.
would not be happening. Three months after that, Cammack took his third | :17:02. | :17:12.
victim. -- Stephen Port. There are a lot of unanswered questions. They | :17:13. | :17:14.
had to content and deal with the fact that a lot on was taken away | :17:15. | :17:18.
from them in circumstances such as this. They've had a number of | :17:19. | :17:23.
interactions and dealing with the police. All that has happened to | :17:24. | :17:28.
date is more questions have arisen than answers. How can I put into | :17:29. | :17:33.
words how let down I feel? By an establishment... That is there to | :17:34. | :17:41.
protect the community. The police response is now under investigation | :17:42. | :17:47.
but that is too late for the families of Cammack's victims. -- | :17:48. | :17:54.
Port. You can see the full | :17:55. | :17:55.
BBC Three documentary - called "How Police Missed | :17:56. | :17:58.
the Grindr Killer" - Actor Clive Mantle has been a hugely | :17:59. | :18:00.
recognisable face on British TV He's been in everything | :18:01. | :18:07.
from Robin Hood to Game of Thrones but is probably best known | :18:08. | :18:13.
as Dr Mike Barratt in Now, as Chrissie Reidy reports, | :18:14. | :18:15.
he's starring on stage in Eastbourne in the powerful courtroom | :18:16. | :18:19.

surgeon Mike Barratt It was the first time in my life | :18:25. | :18:34.
I was able to play a constructive human being, most of the time before | :18:35. | :18:40.
that, I'd played thugs or I'd be punching people being punched, | :18:41. | :18:43.
that was basically my In the 80s, he'd spent time battling | :18:44. | :18:45.

log, you know, in fact, Michael went in once, | :18:59. | :19:01.
they called action and he just fell in before the end of action had | :19:02. | :19:03.
even stopped ringing. Having taken on mostly straight | :19:04. | :19:07.
roles during his career, he says the chance to | :19:08. | :19:09.
do comedy alongside Dawn French | :19:10. | :19:10.
was too good to miss. She's very brilliant but she's also | :19:11. | :19:14.
clever enough to realise that she doesn't mind being surrounded | :19:15. | :19:24.
by people who are funny. Dawn doesn't mind other | :19:25. | :19:26.
people in the cast getting laughs and having laughs | :19:27. | :19:28.
because she knows that reflects on the show and she knows it | :19:29. | :19:32.
makes it a better show. But this week he returns | :19:33. | :19:34.
to his theatre roots as a He is a charming man but he has | :19:35. | :19:41.
let the drink get the better of him and that has led to | :19:42. | :19:50.
making mistakes and he gets handed one last chance to really redeem | :19:51. | :19:53.
himself and stand-up for someone who Whatever I'm trying to do, | :19:54. | :19:56.
I try and do it as well as I can and whether it's comedy | :19:57. | :20:04.
or a wonderful play like this or a bit of Game Of Thrones | :20:05. | :20:07.
or whatever, You just want to do it | :20:08. | :20:09.
