We exclusively reveal how the future of the service has been

:00:00.:00:17.

The 11 families of the Shoreham Airshow victims are being shown

:00:18.:00:21.

the final report into the cause of the crash the day

:00:22.:00:24.

The shocking moment a speeding driver lost control on a Kent

motorway sliproad, crashing onto the roundabout, viewed almost

# Too many dreams can be broken... #.

:00:58.:00:58.

And, especially for you - we chat with Jason Donovan ahead

:00:59.:01:01.

of his latest musical appearance on stage in Canterbury.

:01:02.:01:09.

The Kent, Sussex and Surrey Air Ambulance could have to stop

:01:10.:01:14.

operating completely if it's forced out of its current home at Redhill.

:01:15.:01:19.

Funded largely by charitable donations, its chief executive

:01:20.:01:21.

has told this programme that the service's future

:01:22.:01:24.

is in serious doubt because of plans to redevelop the aerodrome.

:01:25.:01:28.

Last year, the service attended over 2,000 missions.

:01:29.:01:31.

But they say there are very limited options for alternative sites

:01:32.:01:35.

because the helicopter has to be able to reach all parts

:01:36.:01:37.

Our Health Correspondent Mark Norman has this exclusive report.

:01:38.:01:48.

This is the positive future of the air Ambulance Service in Kent,

:01:49.:01:54.

Surrey and Sussex. A brand-new bigger, faster helicopter that will

:01:55.:01:57.

save lives once it comes into service in a few weeks' time. It is

:01:58.:02:04.

like bringing resuscitation to the patient. You can bring the patient

:02:05.:02:09.

inside and deliver treatment. That could save a huge amount of our

:02:10.:02:15.

time, and for our patients, that time is saving lives, that is a huge

:02:16.:02:19.

thing. As you have heard, this helicopter is a game changer for the

:02:20.:02:22.

Ambulance Service, and the first in the country. They want to develop

:02:23.:02:27.

their operational centre in Redhill for the next 20 or 30 years, but

:02:28.:02:34.

there plans to build 4500 homes in the aerodrome. That raises a huge

:02:35.:02:38.

question mark over the future of our air Ambulance Service. The air

:02:39.:02:42.

Ambulance Service has had plans to convert this hangar in Redhill into

:02:43.:02:45.

its main operating base. But what about those are the plans to build

:02:46.:02:50.

homes here? Their plans to build 4500 homes on that runway. Where

:02:51.:02:54.

does that leave the service? With an uncertain future. And whilst in one

:02:55.:02:59.

sense we are really looking forward to moving in here and doing all that

:03:00.:03:04.

we need to do here, the new aircraft and all that means, uncertainty, a

:03:05.:03:09.

question mark over our future, is not a nice place to be. Somebody's

:03:10.:03:13.

got to look at the strategic picture and say, are we going to deprive the

:03:14.:03:19.

region of a very, very much-needed asset? If planners remove that

:03:20.:03:23.

capability from us, people well so far. HM Bell has been speaking to

:03:24.:03:29.

local councillors and developers, they are very aware of the possible

:03:30.:03:34.

consequences of any decision. It is a huge local decision-making

:03:35.:03:37.

process, but the air ambulance is a regional service. Does that impact

:03:38.:03:42.

on your bot process? It will do, because it is a material

:03:43.:03:44.

consideration the planners will need to take into account. What we are

:03:45.:03:48.

looking for is an improved mix of housing, better than the current

:03:49.:03:53.

mix. It has got to be more affordable, because house prices are

:03:54.:03:58.

14 times average earnings. Last year, this person's life was saved

:03:59.:04:02.

by the Ambulance Service. Here's an example of why they have invested 7

:04:03.:04:06.

million euros in this new helicopter, and they want more of

:04:07.:04:10.

them to improve the capability and availability of their service. And

:04:11.:04:12.

they want to main operating base to do that.

:04:13.:04:13.

The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance currently

:04:14.:04:15.

flies two helicopters, which can fly at speeds of up to 150

:04:16.:04:18.

mph, which means they can reach any part of Kent,

:04:19.:04:21.

Last year, the project received a ?1.5 million Government grant,

:04:22.:04:25.

and the rest of its funding is raised by donations.

:04:26.:04:30.

Our Health Correspondent Mark Norman is at the Air Ambulance

:04:31.:04:32.

Does it realistically mean that the service could" yellow -- code"

:04:33.:04:50.

yellow it still has its base, its spiritual home in Kent. You can see

:04:51.:04:54.

one in stand-by or no Redhill, that was up in the air on a shout just

:04:55.:04:59.

under an hour ago. This operates 24 hours a day and at night, not all

:05:00.:05:03.

air Ambulance Services do that. They want more flights available, to have

:05:04.:05:07.

more capability to save more lives. They say they need a main operating

:05:08.:05:11.

base to do that, they want it here at Redhill. If that can't happen,

:05:12.:05:20.

they say they are not sure what will happen. They will have to scale back

:05:21.:05:22.

things, nobody wants to see that. Thanks, Mark.

:05:23.:05:24.

It was a disaster which killed 11 men from Sussex, and tonight,

:05:25.:05:27.

18 months after the Shoreham Airshow crash, the families of the victims

:05:28.:05:30.

are being shown the final conclusions of the official report

:05:31.:05:32.

The Air Accident Investigation Branch will publish

:05:33.:05:36.

Meanwhile, the pilot of the vintage jet, Andy Hill -

:05:37.:05:39.

who survived the crash onto the A27 - is still under investigation

:05:40.:05:42.

Our Special Correspondent Colin Campbell has this report.

:05:43.:05:50.

It is a report into the deadliest civilian airshow disaster in 60

:05:51.:05:58.

years. Families of the 11 who lost their lives hope it will make safety

:05:59.:06:03.

recommendations to prevent further tragedy and explain what caused the

:06:04.:06:08.

crash. This is an important step in achieving closure for the families

:06:09.:06:11.

of the victims. They have waited 18 months now to get to the heart of

:06:12.:06:17.

what exactly happened on that fateful day in August. The crash

:06:18.:06:21.

happened on the first day of the popular two-day Shoreham Airshow.

:06:22.:06:27.

The 1950s walk on tour was the first flight of the afternoon's session of

:06:28.:06:32.

displays. -- hawk and. It started with a low pass along the runway,

:06:33.:06:37.

turning for a second flyby. Behind the cordoned off official viewing

:06:38.:06:41.

areas lies by a 27, a busy main road where the number of enthusiasts had

:06:42.:06:44.

pulled over to get a good view of the flights. Nearing the airport and

:06:45.:06:49.

directly above the 827, the Jet pulled up to perform a loop the

:06:50.:06:52.

loop, but it went horribly wrong. The plane failing to pull out of the

:06:53.:06:58.

manoeuvre and plummeting into the westbound carriageway. The pilot

:06:59.:07:02.

Andy Hill was thrown free and survived. If he is at fault in any

:07:03.:07:06.

way whatsoever, if you made an error of judgment, showing off, anything,

:07:07.:07:13.

then I wanted to be a strong case brought against him. Igniting a huge

:07:14.:07:18.

fireball, the plane broke into four parts, destroying a number of cars.

:07:19.:07:22.

People in the town are anxious to know how it happened, why it

:07:23.:07:28.

happened. Not out of idle curiosity, because it is part of our life.

:07:29.:07:34.

Victims' families are today being given an advance briefing from the

:07:35.:07:37.

air accident investigation bureau, the full report will be published

:07:38.:07:38.

tomorrow at noon. Well, let's cross live to Shoreham

:07:39.:07:41.

and our reporter Charlie Rose, who's at the memorial

:07:42.:07:43.

to the victims. Charlie, the outcome of this

:07:44.:07:45.

report will determine whether the pilot Andy Hill

:07:46.:07:47.

is likely to be prosecuted? Well, this report is the culmination

:07:48.:08:03.

of 18 months of work by the air accident investigation Branch. It

:08:04.:08:07.

says the point of this report is not a blame game or a finger-pointing

:08:08.:08:10.

exercise. Instead, what it sets out to do is to find out what caused the

:08:11.:08:15.

crash and to make safety recommendations for the future. You

:08:16.:08:17.

only need to look behind me to get an idea of what all of this means to

:08:18.:08:22.

the families of the victims and the communities here in Shoreham. The

:08:23.:08:24.

families have had face-to-face meetings with the accident

:08:25.:08:29.

investigation Branch ahead of tomorrow's report which is expected

:08:30.:08:32.

to be published at midday. Thank you, Charlie.

:08:33.:08:34.

We'll have a special programme tomorrow looking

:08:35.:08:36.

We'll also have reaction and analysis on our Facebook page,

:08:37.:08:39.

Twitter and our live news page at bbc.co.uk/sussex.

In a moment: The happy family photos of an evil dictator -

:08:51.:08:52.

David Hill was born in Eastbourne, but sent to Australia as a child.

:08:53.:09:07.

There, he suffered appalling abuse, including being publicly beaten

:09:08.:09:10.

He's now given evidence to the child abuse inquiry that

:09:11.:09:14.

Initially it will look at the cases of children in care who were sent

:09:15.:09:19.

overseas between 1920 and the 1970s - more than 130,000 children

:09:20.:09:22.

were sent to places like Canada and Australia.

:09:23.:09:26.

The full inquiry is expected to take about five years to complete.

:09:27.:09:30.

David Hill, who waived his right to anonymity, is urging the inquiry

:09:31.:09:33.

to name and shame the abusers, even if they are no longer alive.

:09:34.:09:37.

Returning to the docks where he left for Australia 58 years ago,

:09:38.:09:45.

David Hill came back to Britain to tell the Child Sexual Abuse

:09:51.:10:01.

:10:02.:10:05.

Initially, everything was very promising.

:10:06.:10:08.

David Hill and the other child migrants stayed

:10:09.:10:10.

at a mansion near Sevenoaks, where they were fitted

:10:11.:10:13.

VOICEOVER: The liner Astorius arrives at Freemantle from Britain

:10:14.:10:19.

It was only after they were shipped across the world that the promise

:10:20.:10:24.

of escaping poverty in Eastbourne for educational opportunities

:10:25.:10:26.

in Australia turned into a living nightmare.

:10:27.:10:32.

Using hockey sticks to beat up kids, public thrashings where all the boys

:10:33.:10:38.

in the village had to turn up to witness the boys being flogged.

:10:39.:10:43.

All of this was illegal, and I had no idea about that at the time,

:10:44.:10:47.

although I witnessed it and indeed experienced it.

:10:48.:10:50.

While at Fairbridge, David Hill was never sexually abused.

:10:51.:10:52.

But he discovered many were while researching a book

:10:53.:10:54.

Charities say lessons must be learned.

:10:55.:10:59.

Many of the youngsters that were shipped abroad

:11:00.:11:01.

And people have taken their own lives.

:11:02.:11:06.

But at least at long last it's coming out now,

:11:07.:11:12.

and I think that's got to be a good thing.

:11:13.:11:15.

While giving his evidence, David Hill told the inquiry

:11:16.:11:17.

that the brutality and sexual abuse have ruined lives.

:11:18.:11:20.

And, even after all of these years, the perpetrators should

The report found the best solution to rising demand on the route

Shocking footage of the moment a speeding driver lost control

:11:58.:12:03.

of their car on the M2 in Kent, crashing over a roundabout

:12:04.:12:07.

near the Bluewater Shopping Centre, has now been viewed almost

:12:08.:12:09.

Kent Police are investigating the circumstances around

:12:10.:12:15.

the incident, which was captured by a dashboard camera

:12:16.:12:17.

Its journey is being captured by a camera on another car.

:12:18.:12:32.

It comes off the A2 in the direction of Bluewater,

:12:33.:12:35.

The car goes into a roundabout, and into trees.

:12:36.:12:41.

I think it is a classic example of somebody

:12:42.:12:48.

They have come off the slip road at the wrong speed,

:12:49.:12:56.

they haven't braked in time, and they ended up being very lucky

:12:57.:12:59.

to walk away from the accident at that sort of speed coming off

:13:00.:13:04.

We showed the footage to people in nearby Beam.

:13:05.:13:11.

The state of driving today is just awful.

:13:12.:13:23.

When you drive round the M25, you see so much of it,

:13:24.:13:26.

You wouldn't believe some of the things that happen.

:13:27.:13:30.

It is unclear when the crash here actually took place.

:13:31.:13:32.

But the footage of it was posted online on Tuesday.

:13:33.:13:37.

I understand though that Kent Police were aware of it before that

:13:38.:13:45.

when they were contacted by the producers of a World's Worst

It's not thought the driver was seriously hurt.

played by Jason Donovan. In a moment, we will be speaking to

:20:42.:20:45.

Jason. First, let's have a look back at some of his career highlights.

:20:46.:20:50.

# Everybody needs good neighbours

:20:51.:20:57.

# With a little understanding

:20:58.:20:58.

# You can find the perfect plan #.

:20:59.:21:02.

# Just the way I am

:21:03.:21:19.

# And all the love I have is especially for you

:21:20.:21:22.

# A crash of drums

:21:23.:21:25.

# flew out of sight

:21:26.:21:35.

# Colours faded into darkness

:21:36.:21:38.

# As long as I know how to love I

:21:39.:21:50.

all my life to live # And I've got all my love to give #

:21:51.:21:55.

And I will survive # I will survive #.

:21:56.:21:58.

Jason is with me now. Jason, thank you for joining us. You are known

:21:59.:22:05.

for the musicals with Joseph and Rocky horror. But in this, you don't

:22:06.:22:10.

sing. Jason Cummings you have got -- we have got to hear using! -- Jason,

:22:11.:22:17.

we have got to hear using! I guess in a way, acting really is my

:22:18.:22:22.

spiritual home. I'm surrounded by musicians, wonderful musicians and

:22:23.:22:26.

someone the four actors as well. You know, in this one, I didn't feel the

:22:27.:22:30.

need -- some wonderful actors. I'm not hanging up my vocal box yet. I

:22:31.:22:35.

mean, it's all about an impromptu jam session. Are you ever tempted to

:22:36.:22:41.

jam with the guys? I do a bit of singing at the end. In terms of

:22:42.:22:45.

coming out of the character, I play Sam Phillips, who was the father of

:22:46.:22:50.

rock 'n' roll. To America and the rest of the world, these characters,

:22:51.:22:54.

like Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, I guess in a way he was

:22:55.:23:02.

like the Pete Waterman of his day. It's a wonderful story, great

:23:03.:23:05.

musical, I'm excited to bring it to this part of the country. I hate to

:23:06.:23:11.

remind you, but you started in Neighbours 31 years ago! Wow!

:23:12.:23:16.

Exactly! Obviously you, by peers, Kylie, you have had these huge

:23:17.:23:22.

careers. What made you so enduring? Was at the era you became famous in,

:23:23.:23:26.

the characters you played? I don't believe in luck, you create your own

:23:27.:23:30.

luck. But I certainly believe in hard work. I have continued to work

:23:31.:23:34.

hard. And I have a passion, you know, I love what I do. And this

:23:35.:23:39.

show is indicative of that. Jason, I'll let you go, I know you are

:23:40.:23:42.

performing in about 30 minutes time on stage here.

:23:43.:23:45.

Claudia, thank you. He sounds like he has a cold, but he is a true by!

:23:46.:23:51.

-- he is a trooper. If you were out and about first

:23:52.:23:53.

thing this morning, you might have seen a few interesting literary

:23:54.:23:56.

characters on their way to school. From Hermione Grainger

to the Cat in the Hat. Thousands of children

and here are a few of them... They left out the teachers! A few of

:24:06.:25:00.

them dressed up too! Anyway, it was a lovely day for it as well, Sarah?

:25:01.:25:05.

It was a bright and breezy day, quite blustery feel to the weather

:25:06.:25:07.

but things are turning more unsettled as we had through the next

:25:08.:25:11.

few days. Here is a reminder of today. Some weather watcher images.

And a similar scene Kent, too. You can see the blue skies and just a

:25:18.:25:22.

bit of cloud around. As we move through this evening we still have

:25:23.:25:26.

clear skies. Temperatures dipping down quite quickly to roundabout

:25:27.:25:31.

5-6d. Cloud increases through the second half of the night and we see

:25:32.:25:34.

the rain arriving through Friday morning. First thing Friday, a wet

:25:35.:25:39.

and windy start to the day. If you head out onto the roads there could

:25:40.:25:42.

be some surface water around. Not a very pleasant start of the day. That

rain should move through by the afternoon, and improving picture.

The winds will is, too. Temperatures 10-11d at best on Friday afternoon.

-- the winds will ease. Dry on Friday night and on into Saturday.

:25:57.:25:59.

Some showers around through the first part of Saturday. It is a

frost free start of the day. Through Saturday, some outbreaks of rain

towards the east of Kent, uncertainty about the -- how far

:26:09.:26:15.

west it will get. And improving picture through the afternoon, the

:26:16.:26:20.

better day of the weekend, temperatures 9-10d. It is remaining

:26:21.:26:24.

unsettled through Sunday. Low pressure the driving force of old

:26:25.:26:27.

weather. More in the way of wet weather on the cards through Sunday.

:26:28.:26:31.

It is a little bit of an unsettled outlook through the next few days.

:26:32.:26:35.

We are getting used to it! Thank you!

:26:36.:26:37.

Before we go, I'm delighted to say that BBC South East Today has been

:26:38.:26:40.

given this rather special award from the Royal Television Society.

:26:41.:26:42.

We have been named as the best Nations and Region's

:26:43.:26:45.

programme in the country - our second win in three years.

:26:46.:26:50.

We are feeling very proud of ourselves! Absolutely! I will be

:26:51.:27:00.

back with the late bulletin. Bye-bye.
