Here in the South East tonight: Two Kent Labour Party candidates | :00:00. | :00:07.
apologise for selling off charity donations to raise funds, | :00:08. | :00:10.
After seven men drowned last year, a ?50,000 plan to prevent | :00:11. | :00:17.
any more deaths on Camber Sands is approved. | :00:18. | :00:21.
We'll be live in Bexhill with the details. | :00:22. | :00:30.
And after a wet and blustery day, further showers tonight. | :00:31. | :00:38.
There are calls tonight for an investigation | :00:39. | :00:43.
into the conduct of two prospective Labour candidates for | :00:44. | :00:45.
Kent County Council, after they raised party funds | :00:46. | :00:49.
by selling off cosmetics and toiletries which had been | :00:50. | :00:50.
donated to charity and were supposed to go | :00:51. | :00:53.
Karen Constantine and Raushan Ara, who are standing for election | :00:54. | :00:57.
Our Political Editor Helen Catt reports. | :00:58. | :01:03.
We were fortunate enough to be given thousands and thousands | :01:04. | :01:07.
And within that, we give out to charities and good causes | :01:08. | :01:15.
and today is a good cause that I stand for, | :01:16. | :01:17.
which happens to be the Labour Party. | :01:18. | :01:19.
These boxes of toiletries were supposed to go to the needy. | :01:20. | :01:23.
Instead, they ended up on sale in a Ramsgate pub to raise money | :01:24. | :01:27.
By anybody's standards, taking charitable donations destined | :01:28. | :01:35.
for homeless people and destitute people to use and sell | :01:36. | :01:40.
and fund your election campaign is morally reprehensible. | :01:41. | :01:48.
The products were given by Lush to one charity, | :01:49. | :01:50.
the Kindness Offensive, on the condition | :01:51. | :01:52.
That charity passed it to another, Food For All, | :01:53. | :01:56.
and it was they who gave it to Labour. | :01:57. | :01:59.
But there are rules restricting donations from charities | :02:00. | :02:02.
Charities must only carry out activities to achieve its own | :02:03. | :02:06.
charitable purposes and donation of funds or objects | :02:07. | :02:09.
to a political party would be contrary to the purposes | :02:10. | :02:14.
Food For All's Jenny Matias has sent a letter of apology | :02:15. | :02:20.
She said she was informed they were not to be sold for profit | :02:21. | :02:28.
and they apologised and they had not totally adhered to | :02:29. | :02:31.
and that they are devastated that their unwise actions | :02:32. | :02:35.
to a certain group have since become problematic. | :02:36. | :02:38.
As for Labour, they told us they have not breached electoral law | :02:39. | :02:42.
and there are no allegations they have broken any rules. | :02:43. | :02:46.
Its candidates, Karen Constantine and Raushan Ara have apologised | :02:47. | :02:49.
and said the ?415 raised will be split between two local charities. | :02:50. | :02:53.
In Ramsgate today, some thought that was enough. | :02:54. | :02:58.
If the money is going to charity, then yes. | :02:59. | :03:02.
It shouldn't have happened in the first place. | :03:03. | :03:04.
The Charity Commissioners said they are contacting the trustees | :03:05. | :03:11.
of Food For All but a formal inquiry has not been opened. | :03:12. | :03:18.
Our reporter Lauren Moss has been following this story | :03:19. | :03:21.
Lauren, what's been the political reaction to this? | :03:22. | :03:28.
We've spoken to several local politicians and there are mixed | :03:29. | :03:35.
feelings. Some think the Labour Party should carry out its own | :03:36. | :03:39.
internal investigation but they have told us they are satisfied there | :03:40. | :03:42.
does need to be one. Others think this is a genuine mistake and action | :03:43. | :03:47.
has already been taken to put it right. A complaint has been made to | :03:48. | :03:52.
Kent Police but they say it is too early to say whether they will | :03:53. | :03:55.
investigate further. Plans for lifeguards to be stationed | :03:56. | :03:57.
at a popular beach in East Sussex where seven people drowned | :03:58. | :04:00.
last summer have been Rother District Council has set | :04:01. | :04:02.
aside more than ?50,000 to fund the service | :04:03. | :04:06.
at Camber Sands, near Rye. Families of the men who drowned say | :04:07. | :04:08.
they believe a lifeguard service This is one of the two men who lost | :04:09. | :04:23.
their lives last July. He died after attempting to rescue this Brazilian | :04:24. | :04:29.
man. That was after he got into difficulty at Camber Sands. In | :04:30. | :04:34.
August, tragedy struck again when five more men drowned. Six months | :04:35. | :04:40.
on, tonight, clients have been approved to fund a lifeguard service | :04:41. | :04:44.
in the summer months. Our thoughts to remain with the | :04:45. | :04:50.
families and friends of the young men tragically killed on Camber | :04:51. | :04:55.
Sands but following tonight we are obviously satisfied that the funds | :04:56. | :05:01.
have been made for the provision of lifeguards on Camber Sands. | :05:02. | :05:04.
It means 15 lifeguard will be stationed here over the summer, with | :05:05. | :05:11.
eight on duty at any one time. June to September, that will be an | :05:12. | :05:16.
excellent idea. I know how quickly things change. | :05:17. | :05:21.
There hasn't been an accident for a while but the best way to prevent it | :05:22. | :05:27.
Ever since the five young men died Ever since the five young men died | :05:28. | :05:30.
last August, the relatives of the action. | :05:31. | :05:35.
I was shocked because you have I was shocked because you have | :05:36. | :05:39.
25,000 people every day and these five kids that have died, young | :05:40. | :05:46.
healthy people. If there were lifeguard fear they could have been | :05:47. | :05:50.
saved. The cancer has set aside more than | :05:51. | :05:56.
?15,000 to fund the lifeguard service -- ?50,000. | :05:57. | :05:58.
And Charlie's at Bexhill town hall now, where the meeting | :05:59. | :06:00.
Those plans have now been given the full unanimous thumbs up and the | :06:01. | :06:15.
lifeboat service will get its full recruitment drive under way. It has | :06:16. | :06:20.
already recruited to lifeguards and wants to get a full quality team | :06:21. | :06:25.
together to serve the people at Camber Sands. Meanwhile, inquests | :06:26. | :06:30.
into the deaths last summer have yet to take place and, as it stands, no | :06:31. | :06:39.
date has been set. The train drivers union Aslef is due | :06:40. | :06:47.
to resume talks over the introduction of driver only operated | :06:48. | :06:53.
trains. The previous deal was rejected by union members earlier | :06:54. | :06:54.
this month. This week marks the end of a era | :06:55. | :06:56.
at the Tower of London, as the Chief Yeoman Warder, | :06:57. | :06:59.
effectively Alan Kingshott from Newhaven has | :07:00. | :07:00.
been living in the Tower in recent years, but is about to move back | :07:01. | :07:05.
to the Sussex coast To even be considered for the job, | :07:06. | :07:07.
you must have spent at least 22 years in the Armed Forces | :07:08. | :07:12.
with a good conduct record, and have As well as keeping the Crown Jewels | :07:13. | :07:15.
safe, duties include giving visitors a guided tour, | :07:16. | :07:19.
though training takes six months When it's your final | :07:20. | :07:22.
time here at the Tower and it's after 19 years, | :07:23. | :07:29.
it is very emotional and very surprising to me | :07:30. | :07:32.
how my family are affected by it, watching us pack the boxes | :07:33. | :07:38.
for the very last time. My grandchildren were baptised | :07:39. | :07:40.
and my children were married here, As the Tower of London's head | :07:41. | :07:45.
Beefeater, these Tudor lodgings above the Tower's main entrance have | :07:46. | :07:52.
been home for just But now, Alan Kingshott | :07:53. | :07:54.
is heading home to Sussex. The best bits for me are living over | :07:55. | :08:04.
the top of the gate and there's 2.8 million visitors coming | :08:05. | :08:08.
in and out, underneath my house. The loudest thing I'm | :08:09. | :08:12.
going to hear now when I go back to my house is probably | :08:13. | :08:15.
a seagull landing somewhere. As Chief Yeoman Warder | :08:16. | :08:18.
here at the tower, of an extraordinary chain | :08:19. | :08:28.
of tradition, The tower's nearly 940 | :08:29. | :08:30.
years old and I've only In comparison to that, | :08:31. | :08:34.
it is just a blip in history. But from my perspective, being part | :08:35. | :08:40.
of this iconic heritage site, This Thursday, he will don uniform | :08:41. | :08:45.
for the final time and admits the relative anonymity of retirement | :08:46. | :08:51.
may just take some getting used to. I shall just blend in with | :08:52. | :08:54.
everything within the countryside. I will probably go and have a quick | :08:55. | :08:58.
coffee with my wife at home and just But while Alan may no | :08:59. | :09:02.
longer have the uniform, his name will remain at the Tower | :09:03. | :09:11.
for centuries to come. That's it from me, so let's take | :09:12. | :09:19.
a look now at the South East weather It was a fairly miserable start of | :09:20. | :09:34.
the working week. Really blustery and wear it. We've had these intense | :09:35. | :09:39.
thunderstorms throughout the day. We have them tonight as well and have | :09:40. | :09:43.
the next couple of days will be intense rains, particularly through | :09:44. | :09:51.
the afternoon. It will stay cold with a blast delay -- blustery | :09:52. | :09:59.
westerly wind. Temperatures will stay above freezing for the most | :10:00. | :10:05.
part. Along the coast first thing it will be a wet start to the day. For | :10:06. | :10:11.
most of the morning it should be dry and bright but by the afternoon and | :10:12. | :10:15.
this other weather front moves on from the West and that will be wet | :10:16. | :10:20.
and windy. One or two scattered showers first thing, potentially win | :10:21. | :10:27.
through. Dry and bright for the rest of the morning and then the second | :10:28. | :10:30.
band of rain comes in in the afternoon. It will feel cooler than | :10:31. | :10:38.
that with the wind and rain. Into Wednesday we see that fronts to | :10:39. | :10:44.
clear and because it is breezy we should see temperatures above | :10:45. | :10:49.
freezing. First thing on Wednesday it should be a dry picture but | :10:50. | :10:54.
should see further rain pushing in from the south. Here is the outlook | :10:55. | :11:01.
for | :11:02. | :11:02. |
