Today's main headlines in the South East... | :00:00. | :00:00.
A loving mother, adored by her husband - | :00:00. | :00:07.
tributes to Debbie Masters, who died after being hit | :00:08. | :00:10.
We'll be live in Battle with the latest. | :00:11. | :00:14.
And 40 junior doctors are to be removed from a Kent hospital | :00:15. | :00:17.
amid fears their training isn't good enough and patient safety | :00:18. | :00:20.
And after today's sunshine the rain is back again for tomorrow. | :00:21. | :00:39.
The mother of three young boys who died after being hit by a car | :00:40. | :00:43.
on Battle High Street has been named as Debbie Masters. | :00:44. | :00:46.
Her family said this evening she "will be missed forever." | :00:47. | :00:48.
A special fundraising campaign has been set up to help | :00:49. | :00:53.
Sussex Police are investigating reports that the female driver | :00:54. | :00:56.
of the car may have been under the influence of alcohol | :00:57. | :00:59.
A loving wife and mother adored by her husband. | :01:00. | :01:07.
Today Debbie Masters's grieving family released a tribute saying | :01:08. | :01:09.
She was well known and loved in this small Sussex town, | :01:10. | :01:14.
which is still reeling from what happened on Sunday. | :01:15. | :01:21.
Knowing that three kids have lost their mum. | :01:22. | :01:27.
They lived about eight doors down from us and they were always | :01:28. | :01:30.
Her husband, her and her three children all the time. | :01:31. | :01:34.
It has been a shock for the whole town. | :01:35. | :01:37.
I was talking to some other people who actually know them who live down | :01:38. | :01:40.
there and they were in tears this morning and everybody's going down | :01:41. | :01:43.
Mrs Masters died after being hit by a car while out walking | :01:44. | :01:48.
Her husband was seriously hurt as her three children, | :01:49. | :01:51.
including a baby in a pram, were treated for minor injuries. | :01:52. | :01:54.
A 34-year-old driver involved was taken to hospital. | :01:55. | :01:56.
Police are investigating reports she may have been under | :01:57. | :01:58.
Two of Mrs Masters's children are pupils at Battle | :01:59. | :02:06.
and Langton Primary school, where special assembly's | :02:07. | :02:08.
While the children are here between 8.45am and 3.15pm | :02:09. | :02:12.
they are ours and we feel that connection very, very strongly. | :02:13. | :02:15.
It's certainly fair to say that it's had a big impact on the staff | :02:16. | :02:18.
here who are really coming to terms with such a shock. | :02:19. | :02:29.
A special service is also being held at Saint Mary's church on Sunday | :02:30. | :02:32.
and a community support fund set up to help the family. | :02:33. | :02:34.
Just so that people can express in a practical way their care | :02:35. | :02:37.
and concern and can give something to the family to just bring | :02:38. | :02:43.
support in their needs over the weeks and months ahead. | :02:44. | :02:48.
A candle burns tonight among the many tributes laid | :02:49. | :02:50.
Messages of love and sadness from those who knew Mrs Masters | :02:51. | :02:54.
and the wider community touched by this tragedy. | :02:55. | :03:02.
Amanda is in Battle now - Amanda, what's the latest | :03:03. | :03:04.
Well, this evening the police have told us that the 34-year-old driver | :03:05. | :03:18.
is still in hospital. She will be interviewed once she has been | :03:19. | :03:20.
released from hospital and they are also still waiting for the results | :03:21. | :03:25.
of the blood sample analysis which will help the investigation to | :03:26. | :03:27.
establish whether or not alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. | :03:28. | :03:31.
Police have told us they are still keen to hear from anyone who may | :03:32. | :03:35.
have seen that black car in the moments leading up to the crash and | :03:36. | :03:40.
meanwhile this evening a group of local residents and businesses have | :03:41. | :03:43.
started a petition. They say they have been warning for some time that | :03:44. | :03:47.
some drivers do travel along this road far too quickly along the | :03:48. | :03:51.
narrow streets and they are concerned about this ability with | :03:52. | :03:54.
traffic along either side of the road. | :03:55. | :03:56.
More than 40 junior doctors are being withdrawn from a Kent | :03:57. | :03:59.
hospital, amid concerns that patient safety is being compromised. | :04:00. | :04:01.
Health Education England has requested the removal of more | :04:02. | :04:03.
than half of the Kent and Canterbury's trainee doctors, | :04:04. | :04:05.
because of a shortage of permanent consultants who oversee training. | :04:06. | :04:08.
Our Health Correspondent Mark Norman reports. | :04:09. | :04:22.
In the next 12 weeks, more than half of all the junior | :04:23. | :04:25.
doctors in this hospital in Canterbury will be removed. | :04:26. | :04:27.
Removed by Health Education in England, who say that doctors | :04:28. | :04:29.
aren't being trained properly and are not being | :04:30. | :04:31.
Making changes to hospital services is not | :04:32. | :04:34.
What's really important is that we run safe services today, | :04:35. | :04:37.
we need to make changes in how we do it going forward to ensure | :04:38. | :04:41.
we continue to provide good care to our patients and good | :04:42. | :04:43.
Health Education England are responsible for overseeing | :04:44. | :04:48.
They told us today that in Canterbury, there aren't enough | :04:49. | :04:52.
That 42 out of 76 trainees at the hospital will be removed. | :04:53. | :04:58.
And that it will affect about 50 patients a day for those | :04:59. | :05:03.
But how does a hospital run with 55% fewer junior doctors? | :05:04. | :05:09.
Some in-patient services, such as heart, stroke and elderly care, | :05:10. | :05:12.
will move to either Margate or Ashford, but the trust insists | :05:13. | :05:15.
So it will mean that some services, a very small percentage of services, | :05:16. | :05:20.
Not immediately but at some point in the future. | :05:21. | :05:26.
However, for more than a decade, campaigners locally have fought | :05:27. | :05:29.
to keep services at the Kent and Canterbury, and some fear | :05:30. | :05:31.
that the trust are planning to downgrade or possibly even close | :05:32. | :05:34.
the hospital and they are furious at today's news. | :05:35. | :05:38.
What are we going to have left there is nothing and we are not | :05:39. | :05:42.
going to have a hospital in Canterbury, come | :05:43. | :05:44.
And campaigners tell me they're planning another | :05:45. | :05:46.
march through Canterbury to argue their case. | :05:47. | :05:49.
And the hospital and Health Education England say the temporary | :05:50. | :05:52.
changes to services will begin in the next few weeks. | :05:53. | :05:55.
Mark Norman, BBC South East Today, Canterbury. | :05:56. | :05:59.
Leanne Rinne has also been following this story. | :06:00. | :06:02.
Leanne, after today's announcement how reassured should | :06:03. | :06:05.
The trust involved has been trying to reassure patients today. The | :06:06. | :06:16.
trust has been saying today that the patients will always receive the | :06:17. | :06:19.
best possible care that I have been speaking to the Royal College of | :06:20. | :06:22.
Nursing and they say they have concerns because some of the nurses | :06:23. | :06:25.
will be moving along with the junior doctors and they don't yet have the | :06:26. | :06:29.
details of that. Earlier on today we understand that a staff meeting was | :06:30. | :06:33.
held at the hospital. We understand many people were upset about the | :06:34. | :06:36.
changes taking place but that also there was a determination to see | :06:37. | :06:39.
things through. I think the main question the night from campaigners | :06:40. | :06:44.
is why is there not enough consultants at the Kent and | :06:45. | :06:47.
Canterbury Hospital? They want answers and they want people to be | :06:48. | :06:49.
held to account. Thank you. An innocent man who panicked - | :06:50. | :06:51.
or a lying manipulative killer? The question jurors have been told | :06:52. | :06:54.
they now have to answer in the trial of a man accused of murdering Sussex | :06:55. | :06:57.
teenager Shana Grice. The 19-year-old's throat | :06:58. | :07:00.
was cut at her home Her former boyfriend Michael Lane | :07:01. | :07:03.
denies stalking, then killing her Michael Lane doesn't deny being | :07:04. | :07:07.
at Shana Grice's flat on the morning she was murdered but he says she was | :07:08. | :07:15.
already dead when he arrived. He admits lying to | :07:16. | :07:20.
police on his arrest but his defence counsel | :07:21. | :07:23.
told the jury today that was because he was panicked | :07:24. | :07:26.
and terrified by the conclusion that police | :07:27. | :07:29.
would and did jump to. There was, said his counsel, | :07:30. | :07:31.
no direct evidence of his involvement, it was | :07:32. | :07:34.
all circumstantial. But the prosecution asked | :07:35. | :07:36.
the jury to decide if this really was an innocent man | :07:37. | :07:44.
who was panicked or a lying, He told a friend Shana | :07:45. | :07:47.
would pay for leaving him. She did, it was said, | :07:48. | :07:51.
with her life at his hands. She was found dead, her throat cut | :07:52. | :07:54.
at the flat she had shared with Michael Lane had stolen | :07:55. | :07:59.
a key to her home and put Several times she had | :08:00. | :08:03.
reported him to police for stalking but on one occasion had | :08:04. | :08:07.
been given a penalty notice herself The judge told the jury | :08:08. | :08:09.
this case had given rise to a great deal of emotion | :08:10. | :08:15.
and that they would need cool heads. They weren't there, | :08:16. | :08:19.
he said, to like or dislike Michael Lane or take | :08:20. | :08:21.
a personal view about Shana Grice's | :08:22. | :08:23.
behaviour, but to take an objective Sara Smith, BBC South East Today, | :08:24. | :08:27.
Lewes Crown Court. The RMT Union has announced it | :08:28. | :08:32.
will push back it's latest strike action to allow for fresh talks | :08:33. | :08:37.
with Southern Rail in the ongoing dispute over the safety | :08:38. | :08:40.
of driver-only operated trains. RMT members were due to go on strike | :08:41. | :08:44.
for 24 hours on the 4th April but will now strike instead | :08:45. | :08:48.
on Saturday 8th April - An RMT spokesman said the issue | :08:49. | :08:52.
of safety is "fundamental" and must be "addressed | :08:53. | :08:56.
at the negotiating table". The RNLI is to provide | :08:57. | :09:00.
lifeguards on Hastings beaches Following an agreement | :09:01. | :09:02.
with Hastings Borough Council, the charity will introduce three | :09:03. | :09:07.
lifeguard stations at Pelham beach Lifeguards have previously operated | :09:08. | :09:11.
on beaches in the area, but the service was run by the local | :09:12. | :09:14.
council and supported They had to wait an extra day | :09:15. | :09:17.
for blue skies, but today two spitfires flew over the white cliffs | :09:18. | :09:25.
of Dover to mark the one hundredth The fly-past was cancelled yesterday | :09:26. | :09:28.
because of bad weather. But the pilots said | :09:29. | :09:35.
they were determined to take to the skies this morning to honour | :09:36. | :09:38.
the forces' sweetheart, who's lived Now, let's take a look | :09:39. | :09:41.
at the weather in the South East Rachel, a great day for flying today | :09:42. | :09:48.
but all change again tomorrow. Yes, not good flying weather | :09:49. | :10:00.
tomorrow. The rain is back again and we will be holding onto that much | :10:01. | :10:04.
cooler air that we have had today. Today, temperatures did well to get | :10:05. | :10:07.
out of single figures. Clear blue skies for the most part and as we | :10:08. | :10:11.
had through the night it is going to be staying dry and clear. As a | :10:12. | :10:15.
result, quite chilly. Overnight lows of two of three Celsius in rural | :10:16. | :10:20.
spots but it stays breezy so we should be staying frost free. You | :10:21. | :10:24.
are up early we are going to be seeing sunshine first thing for | :10:25. | :10:28.
Wednesday. Very quickly as we had through the morning, though, we will | :10:29. | :10:31.
see outbreaks of rainbows of the reason for this area of low | :10:32. | :10:34.
pressure. There is even snow, not pass in the South. We'll see rain. | :10:35. | :10:40.
Heavy for a time, particularly in the middle of the day. Because of | :10:41. | :10:44.
the winds, it passes through and behind it we start to see some | :10:45. | :10:48.
breaks in that cloud cover. Just the cut these temperatures, chilly, only | :10:49. | :10:52.
reaching highs of seven or eight Celsius, re-blustery southerly | :10:53. | :10:57.
winds, 25 mph. In Thursday, further outbreaks of rain and again on | :10:58. | :10:59.
Friday. The outlook in gradually improve through Friday and | :11:00. | :11:01.
the weekend isn't looking bad. Heavy rain, snow and ice are all in | :11:02. | :11:13.
the forecast once again. It was quite a wintry scene today, | :11:14. | :11:16.
especially in Scotland. Some very cold looking winter skies here, and | :11:17. | :11:21.
we had some snow falling at times in West Lothian. For a while earlier | :11:22. | :11:24.
today, there were quite a few showers running through central | :11:25. | :11:27.
Scotland, all in that cold air. Right now, we have two areas of | :11:28. | :11:36.
cloud, one in northern Scotland and this deepening area bringing heavy | :11:37. | :11:39.
rain into south-west England and Wales overnight, with snow | :11:40. | :11:41. |
