David Lord lost control of his car on Christmas Eve in 2015, | :00:54. | :00:58.
crashing into the front of a Costa Coffee shop in Westerham. | :00:59. | :01:02.
Valerie Deakin from East Sussex was in the caf and died instantly. | :01:03. | :01:06.
Her family say they believe the crash was entirely avoidable, | :01:07. | :01:09.
There were gasps in court as CCTV footage was shown | :01:10. | :01:15.
of the moments leading up to Valerie Deakin's death. | :01:16. | :01:20.
David Lord's Audi hit several cars before careering | :01:21. | :01:22.
across the pavement into Costa coffee. | :01:23. | :01:26.
Valerie Deakin, who was sitting by the window, was thrown | :01:27. | :01:38.
across the coffee shop, striking the wall on the far side. | :01:39. | :01:41.
She died almost instantly, leaving her family bereft. | :01:42. | :01:47.
The worst time is turning the light off and getting into bed. | :01:48. | :01:50.
It's just like climbing into a black hole. | :01:51. | :01:52.
It's one of total loss, total rejection and hopelessness. | :01:53. | :01:55.
David Lord had confused the accelerator pedal | :01:56. | :01:57.
with the break for 15 seconds, described by the judge | :01:58. | :02:00.
Mum was killed by a driver who should have exercised better | :02:01. | :02:03.
judgment regarding his capability to drive safely. | :02:04. | :02:09.
This incident was entirely avoidable, and should | :02:10. | :02:13.
The court heard until the crash there had been no evidence | :02:14. | :02:18.
to suggest he was unfit to drive them that he'd suffer what's | :02:19. | :02:21.
Not necessarily only in the elderly, but yes, it is very common. | :02:22. | :02:29.
And as was rightly explained in court, as soon as a person | :02:30. | :02:34.
puts their foot on the accelerator mistaking it for the brake pedal, | :02:35. | :02:38.
it is exceptionally common that they start to panic. | :02:39. | :02:41.
At a previous hearing, David Lord offered this apology. | :02:42. | :02:44.
I've written a letter to them to tell them that. | :02:45. | :02:52.
That letter David Lord has written to the family was handed | :02:53. | :02:55.
over to them at the end of sentencing today. | :02:56. | :02:57.
He also offered to meet them in person to apologise, | :02:58. | :03:01.
but they say they need some more time to think about that. | :03:02. | :03:10.
Police investigating the terrorist attack in Westminster have named | :03:11. | :03:12.
the man who killed a policeman and four others as Khalid Masood, | :03:13. | :03:15.
That is being confirmed he was born in Dartford with another name. | :03:16. | :03:32.
The 52-year-old was shot dead by an armed officer yesterday, | :03:33. | :03:34.
after driving his car into pedestrians on Westminster | :03:35. | :03:36.
Bridge, then stabbing a policeman at the entrance to Parliament. | :03:37. | :03:38.
Today Kent Police have been conducting armed patrols | :03:39. | :03:40.
in response to the attack, as Lauren Moss reports. | :03:41. | :03:42.
The terrorist attack which took place just 55 miles away | :03:43. | :03:45.
from here has led to an increase armed police presence | :03:46. | :03:47.
As of yesterday, the Chief Constable authorised immediately | :03:48. | :03:54.
the additional resources to be deployed. | :03:55. | :03:55.
We kept staff on duty, both armed staff and unarmed staff. | :03:56. | :04:01.
The patrols will be stepped up in busy areas like the Bluewater | :04:02. | :04:04.
shopping centre near Dartford, here at Canterbury Cathedral, | :04:05. | :04:06.
and the key international gateway at the port of Dover. | :04:07. | :04:08.
In Westminster today, parliament tried to get back to normal. | :04:09. | :04:11.
The Prime Minister said that the country will never | :04:12. | :04:13.
I'm really pleased that the police are playing such a high | :04:14. | :04:19.
There is a few evil people trying to undermine us, | :04:20. | :04:25.
but the rest of society will be stronger together in combating them. | :04:26. | :04:32.
Police have named the man who carried out yesterday's attack. | :04:33. | :04:34.
His name was Khalid Masood, he was 52 and originally from Kent | :04:35. | :04:37.
but believed to be leaving most recently in the West Midlands. | :04:38. | :04:40.
Details about him are still emerging, but we know he had a range | :04:41. | :04:43.
of previous convictions dating back to 1983, and the latest was in 2003 | :04:44. | :04:48.
where he was found to be in possession of a knife. | :04:49. | :04:51.
We are told that at the time of yesterday's attack, | :04:52. | :04:54.
he wasn't the focus of any police investigation. | :04:55. | :05:02.
Well a series of police searches have taken place | :05:03. | :05:04.
across the country today, including the search of at least one | :05:05. | :05:07.
Our reporter Amanda Akass is in the city. | :05:08. | :05:11.
Well, I'm hair outside the Preston Park hotel on the outskirts of | :05:12. | :05:26.
Brighton because I've spoken to a number of members of staff here this | :05:27. | :05:30.
evening who say that the police were here earlier today. They believe | :05:31. | :05:36.
that Khalid Masood, the suspect, did check into the hotel on Friday and | :05:37. | :05:40.
stayed here for a number of nights before the attacks took place. We | :05:41. | :05:44.
have asked Sussex Police if they are able to confirm any of this, and | :05:45. | :05:50.
they have referred to the Met police who refused to comment. None of that | :05:51. | :05:53.
is confirmed at the moment. What we know for sure is that a police raid | :05:54. | :06:00.
did take place in Brighton today. It was one of seven taking Place across | :06:01. | :06:04.
the country as part of this investigation. Sussex Police have | :06:05. | :06:09.
stressed there is no specific threat to the community in Sussex at the | :06:10. | :06:15.
moment. We have learned more about the attacker and his links to the | :06:16. | :06:20.
Southeast? Yes indeed. We have just heard that he was actually born in | :06:21. | :06:25.
Dartford, his birth name was Adrian Elms. And during his life he lived | :06:26. | :06:31.
in a variety of places across the Southeast including Crawley and | :06:32. | :06:34.
Eastbourne. He also believe he had a conviction for knife crime in 2003, | :06:35. | :06:38.
which took place in Eastbourne. Amanda, thank you. | :06:39. | :06:44.
There's been a sharp rise in the number of child sex offences | :06:45. | :06:47.
recorded by police forces in Kent and Sussex, prompting fresh warnings | :06:48. | :06:49.
According to figures from the child safety charity the NSPCC, | :06:50. | :06:53.
crimes against children and young people rose in Sussex | :06:54. | :06:55.
from 1200 in 2014-15, to almost 1500 a year later, | :06:56. | :06:59.
In Kent there was an 18% rise over the same period. | :07:00. | :07:04.
Both forces recorded an average of four child sex offences a day. | :07:05. | :07:08.
Charlie Rose has been speaking to a 21-year-old woman | :07:09. | :07:11.
My dad said it was a punishment for being naughty, and it was a type | :07:12. | :07:20.
And that if anyone found out, the police would | :07:21. | :07:24.
When I got older and I was like, "I don't really care | :07:25. | :07:29.
if they come and take me away", he said that he'd kill my mum | :07:30. | :07:32.
She says she didn't tell her mother what had been happening | :07:33. | :07:37.
When I was 17, my dad was arrested for something else, | :07:38. | :07:42.
and then they came to our door and my mum asked me | :07:43. | :07:45.
And I confirmed it, because she was begging | :07:46. | :07:49.
And then the next day, the police came and spoke to me. | :07:50. | :07:53.
And because of what my dad said about the police, | :07:54. | :07:55.
And I thought there were just trying to get me or my dad in trouble. | :07:56. | :08:00.
And then the more I kind of trusted them, the more I learned | :08:01. | :08:03.
it is actually wrong and it's actually a crime. | :08:04. | :08:06.
Charity the NSPCC says the latest figures it is obtained | :08:07. | :08:08.
from the police show the number of recorded crimes against children | :08:09. | :08:11.
These include rape, sexual assault and sexual exploitation. | :08:12. | :08:17.
There are a number of things that we think might be behind this. | :08:18. | :08:20.
The first is that there is a good, better confidence of victims to come | :08:21. | :08:24.
forward following things like high profile cases in the news. | :08:25. | :08:26.
We're also seeing that police are better at recording, | :08:27. | :08:30.
reporting and investigating sexual crimes against children. | :08:31. | :08:33.
The third thing is also really quite worrying, | :08:34. | :08:35.
Because we can't rule out that because of the online world | :08:36. | :08:41.
and online grooming, that there isn't more opportunity | :08:42. | :08:43.
and access for sexual abuse to happen through the online world. | :08:44. | :08:46.
This victim's father was arrested just before her 18th birthday. | :08:47. | :08:49.
She says she still blames herself for what happened. | :08:50. | :08:53.
I had the chance to speak out when the friend broke | :08:54. | :08:55.
At that time come he was doing it to other people. | :08:56. | :08:59.
I'm angry at all the people that didn't protect me, | :09:00. | :09:04.
Both Kent and Sussex Police say they've invested considerable | :09:05. | :09:09.
resources in tackling crimes of this kind. | :09:10. | :09:13.
And train all officers and staff in recognising | :09:14. | :09:15.
those who are vulnerable to child sexual exploitation. | :09:16. | :09:29.
Sussex Police have acknowledged there may have been "systemic | :09:30. | :09:31.
failings" in the force after a judge criticised their response | :09:32. | :09:34.
in the months before teenager Shana Grice was murdered | :09:35. | :09:36.
The 19-year-old had reported Michael Lane's disturbing behaviour | :09:37. | :09:39.
more than five times - but instead of taking action | :09:40. | :09:41.
against him, the police issued fined her for wasting their time. | :09:42. | :09:45.
Sentencing Lane to a minimum of 25 years in jail today, | :09:46. | :09:48.
Mr Justice Green said police had "jumped to conclusions" | :09:49. | :09:50.
That's it from me, we'll bring you the national weather | :09:51. | :09:58.
forecast in a moment, but first Rachel Mackley has | :09:59. | :10:01.
The sunshine is on the way as we look towards the weekend. Earlier | :10:02. | :10:11.
today a good deal of cloud cover around. It brightens through the day | :10:12. | :10:15.
tomorrow, some warm sunshine around. We still have a brisk, chilly | :10:16. | :10:19.
easterly wind with clearer skies there will be some chilly pictures | :10:20. | :10:23.
on Saturday and Sunday morning. Earlier a good deal of cloud around, | :10:24. | :10:27.
but much of that cleared during the afternoon. Clear skies initially, | :10:28. | :10:31.
but through the night once again more cloud cover around. Because of | :10:32. | :10:35.
the wind, we should stay frost free, but temperatures in the rural spots | :10:36. | :10:41.
dropping to three or four. A with high-pressure in control of things, | :10:42. | :10:47.
it brightens up in the afternoon on Friday. A brisk easterly wind along | :10:48. | :10:54.
the coast, temperatures around eight or nine. Here is the outlook in the | :10:55. | :10:57.
south-east and stop part of the weekend. 1415 degrees. | :10:58. | :11:02.
Still quite breezy. Here's Thomas with the national picture. | :11:03. | :11:05. |
