Good evening. for the news where you are. | :00:08. | :00:08.
The terrorist who killed four people in the heart of Westminster | :00:09. | :00:11.
was a father-of-three, born in Dartford, | :00:12. | :00:13.
who lived in towns and villages across Kent and Sussex, | :00:14. | :00:16.
racking up a string of convictions for violent crime. | :00:17. | :00:20.
Born Adrian Russell Elms to a single parent in Dartford, | :00:21. | :00:24.
he went to school in Tunbridge Wells as Adrian Ajao and also lived | :00:25. | :00:28.
His first conviction came at 18 and there were more over | :00:29. | :00:34.
two decades: assault, GBH and possession of | :00:35. | :00:38.
He was sent to jail in 2003 for stabbing a man | :00:39. | :00:43.
He spent time behind bars at Lewes Prison in East Sussex | :00:44. | :00:47.
Our Special Correspondent Colin Campbell has the details | :00:48. | :00:53.
of the South East criminal who converted to Islam | :00:54. | :00:55.
and brought jihadist terror to the heart of Westminster. | :00:56. | :01:00.
He lived in the heart of Sussex but went | :01:01. | :01:02.
on to strike at the heart of | :01:03. | :01:04.
Those who knew Khalid Masood say he was a deeply troubled and | :01:05. | :01:11.
If he took umbrage against someone for looking at him, | :01:12. | :01:18.
There was an incident he was involved in at this pub. | :01:19. | :01:32.
It was a violent, seemingly unprovoked knife | :01:33. | :01:38.
attack by Khalid Masood, known back then as Adrian Elms, which brought | :01:39. | :01:41.
He smashed a local businessmen across the face | :01:42. | :01:49.
He used a Stanley Knife on someone's face. | :01:50. | :01:55.
He was an older man and he did not deserve to be stabbed. | :01:56. | :01:59.
Smiling at the camera at school in Tunbridge | :02:00. | :02:01.
Wells, this is Khalid Masood aged about 14. | :02:02. | :02:06.
He was known to friends at the time as Adrian Ajao. | :02:07. | :02:09.
He was a genuinely nice guy and I was upset | :02:10. | :02:11.
today to think he would have turned out the way he has. | :02:12. | :02:18.
And then what he has done to these poor families. | :02:19. | :02:21.
It was so out of character for the guy that I knew | :02:22. | :02:24.
Police are looking at every detail of his life. | :02:25. | :02:29.
Our investigation focus is on understanding his motivation, his | :02:30. | :02:32.
Fred Lawrence told me he believed Khalid | :02:33. | :02:42.
Confused about his identity, skin colour, isolated and lonely. | :02:43. | :02:48.
From schoolboy to Westminster attacker, his complex | :02:49. | :03:06.
life has yet to reveal how he chose such a murderous path. | :03:07. | :03:15.
Our Correspondent Mark Norman is in Tunbridge Wells now | :03:16. | :03:17.
where Khalid Masood was at school, then known as Adrian Ajao. | :03:18. | :03:20.
What more can you tell us about his school days, Mark? | :03:21. | :03:31.
He came here as a 12-year-old and everybody- spoken to described him | :03:32. | :03:39.
as being a well liked, sporty, academic and even fun. And for those | :03:40. | :03:43.
I've spoken to, they are quite shocked at the news. | :03:44. | :03:44.
And he went on to commit some shocking acts of violence? | :03:45. | :03:53.
That is right. This well liked schoolboy moved to the six and | :03:54. | :03:58.
became a violent, aggressive young man. He went to prison after | :03:59. | :04:05.
stabbing a man. He said he was socially ostracised and racially | :04:06. | :04:08.
abused. They moved to ease border after prison and there was a vicious | :04:09. | :04:12.
pub fight followed by the stabbing and another six months in jail. The | :04:13. | :04:16.
speculation is that he's where and when he became radicalised. Thank | :04:17. | :04:17.
you. Well, it was in Brighton that | :04:18. | :04:20.
Khalid Masood spent his final night before travelling to Westminster | :04:21. | :04:23.
to enact his terror attack. He booked a room at | :04:24. | :04:25.
the Preston Park Hotel, This was the room where | :04:26. | :04:27.
the London attacker, Khalid Masood, spent | :04:28. | :04:31.
his He checked into the Preston Park | :04:32. | :04:32.
hotel at around 1pm Nobody here had any idea | :04:33. | :04:38.
what he was setting off to do. It is really shocking at the moment, | :04:39. | :04:48.
because obviously, we do not expect a nice person as he seemed to be | :04:49. | :04:54.
to be that kind of person. As a hotel, we do what | :04:55. | :05:00.
we can to take all the information we can, | :05:01. | :05:03.
and the police came yesterday and we were able | :05:04. | :05:06.
to provide them with all the | :05:07. | :05:07.
information they needed and thank The same car that had | :05:08. | :05:09.
been parked overnight in Brighton journeyed to | :05:10. | :05:14.
Westminster to do this. One of the last men | :05:15. | :05:18.
to see him alive runs a security company from | :05:19. | :05:26.
the hotel. He was polite, I noticed | :05:27. | :05:29.
that he came across as well spoken. Pleasant smile, a nice man. | :05:30. | :05:34.
Police swarmed on the hotel on Wednesday night and continued | :05:35. | :05:44.
their searches yesterday. Scary for us all to be so close | :05:45. | :05:48.
to a killer, a terrorist, yes. There was a lot of plainclothes | :05:49. | :05:53.
police in the dining room having talks and that they made | :05:54. | :05:56.
off with a fewer items. Police stripped the room out, | :05:57. | :06:05.
taking away many items, including the trouser press, | :06:06. | :06:07.
the kettle and even the toilet roll Staff still cannot believe | :06:08. | :06:13.
that the day London was He spent another night here, last | :06:14. | :06:29.
Friday. Was he carrying out a recce or had he planned to go to London | :06:30. | :06:34.
and carry out those attacks sooner? Staff here say they can not believe | :06:35. | :06:35.
they came so close to a killer. That's it from me, the national | :06:36. | :06:38.
weather forecast in a moment but first let's get the picture | :06:39. | :06:40.
in the South East A fine weekend coming. Largely dry | :06:41. | :06:56.

down to 3-4 , particularly in rural spots. Saturday shaping up to be | :07:06. | :07:13.
decent. Dry, sunny, quite a cold easterly wind. Milder the further | :07:14. | :07:22.
west you go across the region. Try through Saturday night and on | :07:23. | :07:26.
through Sunday, too. Sunday a fine day with sunshine. Here is the | :07:27. | :07:30.
outlook and now the national forecast. | :07:31. | :07:32.
weather outlook for the whole of the UK. | :07:33. | :07:35.
Good evening. It is good news on the weather front for most of the UK. We | :07:36. | :07:46.
have been forecasting fine weather for a few days. It has certainly | :07:47. | :07:51.
arrived. Beautiful picture today. The skies are clearing across the | :07:52. | :07:54.
UK. Temperatures | :07:55. | :07:55. |
