Today's main headlines in the South East: | :00:00. | :00:00.
Evicted for complaining their flat was mouldy. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Now housed 30 miles from their son's school, the working family who say | :00:07. | :00:10.
It's completely inappropriate for a family. | :00:11. | :00:15.
An inquest hears how a mother of three children was told | :00:16. | :00:23.
she was well enough to leave hospital just hours | :00:24. | :00:25.
And after a lovely sunny day what does the rest of the week have in | :00:26. | :00:37.
store? All the details later. A Sussex family say they've been let | :00:38. | :00:45.
down by the housing system - after being evicted by their private | :00:46. | :00:50.
landlord for complaining The council say they haven't got | :00:51. | :00:52.
anything suitable for the Lowe family closer than Eastbourne - | :00:53. | :00:59.
30 miles from their son's school. A working mother desperate to find | :01:00. | :01:01.
somewhere permanent for her family to live. | :01:02. | :01:09.
This was their home for three years. It became riddled | :01:10. | :01:12.
with damp and cold. We could not use two | :01:13. | :01:17.
of the bedrooms. It was extreme mould in the flat, | :01:18. | :01:23.
on every wall and surface. The mushrooms growing up | :01:24. | :01:31.
through the bathroom floor. Water through the electricals | :01:32. | :01:34.
in the bathroom and toilet. We met at her mother-in-law's house, | :01:35. | :01:39.
after they made the 60 60 minute journey by public | :01:40. | :01:43.
transport from Eastbourne. They're in a hostel | :01:44. | :01:47.
with just one bed. Eastbourne, when you're working | :01:48. | :01:53.
in Hove, your child has just settled it's just an extreme situation | :01:54. | :01:55.
which is impossible to maintain. A young family, working, | :01:56. | :02:03.
trying to do the right thing. That is what the government | :02:04. | :02:07.
keeps telling us The family were served | :02:08. | :02:08.
an eviction notice by their landlord after | :02:09. | :02:12.
the council inspected the property, | :02:13. | :02:13.
and declared it a health hazard and With no reference and part paying | :02:14. | :02:17.
went through housing benefit, the family say they are | :02:18. | :02:21.
struggling to rent elsewhere. A lot of places won't | :02:22. | :02:24.
even look at you, despite the fact it's a working | :02:25. | :02:27.
family, because it's a partial rate The letting agents | :02:28. | :02:30.
managing the property on behalf of the private landlord | :02:31. | :02:36.
refused to comment today but the council told us that | :02:37. | :02:38.
due to a shortage of accommodation in | :02:39. | :02:40.
the city, the only suitable property | :02:41. | :02:41.
available for the family was Those who work to support | :02:42. | :02:44.
families like theirs say Increasingly, we're noticing that | :02:45. | :02:52.
that's actually as a result of people's tenancies being ended | :02:53. | :02:55.
by the landlords and, increasingly, | :02:56. | :02:57.
also for people in work. It's people actually working | :02:58. | :02:59.
who can no longer find appropriate, affordable | :03:00. | :03:01.
accommodation in the area. The family feels stuck | :03:02. | :03:06.
in a vicious circle. Working to make ends meet, | :03:07. | :03:09.
but unable to meet the demands of The rental crisis in the south east | :03:10. | :03:12.
has been described as a 'perfect Latest figures show that in Brighton | :03:13. | :03:21.
and Hove the average cost of renting a two bedroom flat | :03:22. | :03:25.
is ?1,353 per month. That's an increase of 7% on last | :03:26. | :03:28.
year and yet families can receive a maximum of only ?834 in housing | :03:29. | :03:33.
benefit, and less, if the family | :03:34. | :03:41.
have an income. Piers, do tenants have any | :03:42. | :03:44.
protection against landlords evicting them when they ask | :03:45. | :03:48.
for repairs? Well, the government has told us | :03:49. | :04:02.
tonight that they have given councils new powers to tackle what | :04:03. | :04:06.
they call retaliatory evictions, and I have also made something like ?12 | :04:07. | :04:12.
million available to tackle rogue landlords. But in terms of trying to | :04:13. | :04:16.
find some sort of long-term solution, one housing expert told us | :04:17. | :04:21.
that what is needed above all is a greater pool of available | :04:22. | :04:26.
accommodation. That, coupled with a need to convince landlords that | :04:27. | :04:29.
people on housing benefit really are suitable tenants. | :04:30. | :04:31.
A Kent woman who disappeared 20 years ago was unlawfully killed, | :04:32. | :04:34.
Sandie Bowen, originally from Folkestone, was murdered | :04:35. | :04:37.
by her husband in 1997, but he never revealed | :04:38. | :04:41.
Last month her remains were discovered at a reservoir | :04:42. | :04:48.
in Monmouthshire in Wales. She'd been tied to a | :04:49. | :04:50.
Michael Bowen has been released after serving 15 years in prison. | :04:51. | :04:54.
The Crown Prosecution Service says no further action | :04:55. | :04:56.
An inquest has heard how a mother-of-three was declared well | :04:57. | :05:02.
enough to be discharged from hospital just | :05:03. | :05:04.
25-year-old Sian Hollands died at the Darent Valley hospital in 2015. | :05:05. | :05:10.
Her partner told the inquest today that staff said they needed the bed | :05:11. | :05:13.
for another patient. Simon Jones reports. | :05:14. | :05:17.
More than a year after her death, Sian Hollands' family | :05:18. | :05:20.
arrive at the inquest, looking for answers. | :05:21. | :05:23.
Yesterday being Mother's Day, another Mother's Day without her. | :05:24. | :05:31.
Sian was admitted to A, complaining of breathing | :05:32. | :05:35.
difficulties, and pains in her chest and stomach. | :05:36. | :05:37.
Three weeks earlier she had suffered an | :05:38. | :05:39.
ectopic pregnancy at a different hospital and lost a huge amount of | :05:40. | :05:42.
blood, but her family believes when she went | :05:43. | :05:44.
to Darent Valley Hospital she was simply dismissed as a drug | :05:45. | :05:47.
addict because she had just stopped taking methadone to come off heroin, | :05:48. | :05:50.
and her symptoms were put down to withdrawal rather than being | :05:51. | :05:53.
There is anger, there is upset, there's frustration, why did | :05:54. | :06:00.
Sian's partner, Carl Elaine, said the following day, after she was | :06:01. | :06:05.
given methadone, she was told she was well enough to leave, even | :06:06. | :06:08.
though she was hyperventilating and struggling to walk. | :06:09. | :06:10.
Her condition deteriorated and she died. | :06:11. | :06:14.
But A doctor Leila Muhammed on the left | :06:15. | :06:16.
told the inquest when she examined Sian Hollands on the day she was | :06:17. | :06:19.
admitted, there was not sufficient evidence to consider a pulmonary | :06:20. | :06:23.
A ward sister at A told the inquest today that at the time it | :06:24. | :06:35.
was as dreamily busy with ambulances queueing up outside. | :06:36. | :06:39.
The troubled i360 attraction in Brighton, will remain closed | :06:40. | :06:41.
for third day in a row because of a temporary fault. | :06:42. | :06:44.
It's the seventh breakdown in the eight months since | :06:45. | :06:47.
The i360 will be closed until Wednesday at the earliest | :06:48. | :06:52.
while technicians continue to carry out checks. | :06:53. | :06:57.
The headteacher of a Medway primary school has written to parents urging | :06:58. | :07:01.
them to make healthier choices for their children packed lunches - | :07:02. | :07:05.
after finding one child had a day-old Happy Meal, | :07:06. | :07:07.
another, four yoghurts and a tube of Smarties, | :07:08. | :07:10.
and a third had two packets of crisps and a crisp sandwich. | :07:11. | :07:16.
Sara Smith reports from Byron Road Primary School in Gillingham. | :07:17. | :07:18.
It's quite a balancing act, providing food | :07:19. | :07:20.
that is healthy and that your child will actually eat, | :07:21. | :07:25.
but some packed lunches coming into this school | :07:26. | :07:28.
definitely tip the scales in the wrong direction, said | :07:29. | :07:30.
a takeaway, bought the day before. | :07:31. | :07:35.
Crisps, accompanying a crisp sandwich. | :07:36. | :07:38.
They don't really contain very much in the way of | :07:39. | :07:44.
vitamins and minerals, certainly very few healthy fats if any at all, | :07:45. | :07:50.
and they are usually very high in the things | :07:51. | :07:58.
that nowadays we tried to | :07:59. | :08:00.
Parents today said they were happy to be | :08:01. | :08:02.
given advice, and has tried to pack healthy lunches. | :08:03. | :08:05.
I think it is a wise thing to try and get them to | :08:06. | :08:08.
And how easy is it? Not always easy. | :08:09. | :08:15.
It's the parents's responsibility to prepare their packed lunch for their | :08:16. | :08:17.
kids, at least nutritional for the kids. | :08:18. | :08:19.
My other half's a childminder, so we have all the posters up, drink | :08:20. | :08:22.
Coke with water and all that sort of thing, | :08:23. | :08:24.
Two years ago, this school in Wateringbury | :08:25. | :08:30.
banned sugary drinks in | :08:31. | :08:31.
The head's looking to improve the food they eat | :08:32. | :08:34.
too, but admits it's a sensitive area. | :08:35. | :08:36.
You can imagine the peer pressure is huge for what is put | :08:37. | :08:39.
into children's lunchboxes, and you can imagine, you know, | :08:40. | :08:43.
the pressures on parents to buy the things that | :08:44. | :08:45.
children perceive as being acceptable and cool within the | :08:46. | :08:47.
So there's so many issues at play here, and really | :08:48. | :08:55.
wants to bring your parents alongside you as a school when you | :08:56. | :08:58.
The message about nutrition certainly | :08:59. | :09:00.
seems to be getting through to the children have. | :09:01. | :09:02.
I'm in gymnastics so I kept to kind of eat healthy as | :09:03. | :09:05.
well, so I can do the stuff that I want to. | :09:06. | :09:08.
It matters to me because I play a lot of sports and I want to | :09:09. | :09:11.
I have heard rumours about broccoli where if you need a | :09:12. | :09:16.
lot when you grow up you have a big bushy beard, | :09:17. | :09:19.
and I'd love to have a big beard when I grow up. | :09:20. | :09:22.
Today, MPs on the Commons health committee released a report | :09:23. | :09:25.
criticising the government for not doing more to tackle childhood | :09:26. | :09:27.
Now lets take a look at the weather for the week ahead with Nina Ridge. | :09:28. | :09:40.
Nina, we've got some more sunshine tomorrow? | :09:41. | :09:45.
More sunshine indeed, a lovely day today as well. Writes guys out there | :09:46. | :09:51.
and temperatures above average as well. It stays mild, predominantly | :09:52. | :09:56.
dry and a few showers around, but cloud comes and goes, and so not | :09:57. | :10:01.
glorious all the time but there will be some sunshine around at times. | :10:02. | :10:05.
Through the night, some clear spells and breaks in the cloud allowing | :10:06. | :10:08.
patchy mist to form. Temperature dropped to 6 degrees, but thing in | :10:09. | :10:15.
the morning. Mist clears quickly, certainly during the morning, and | :10:16. | :10:19.
for the afternoon cloud and these small chance of a shower but most | :10:20. | :10:24.
places they dry. On the postman at images of 12 degrees, inland as her | :10:25. | :10:29.
trauma, 13 to 14. That cloud builds a touch on Wednesday and we see more | :10:30. | :10:33.
overcast skies with the odd fleeting shower perhaps but most places miss | :10:34. | :10:37.
them and stay dry, and if we do get some brightness we keep those | :10:38. | :10:41.
temperatures around 14-15 degrees. Until we get to the end of the week, | :10:42. | :10:46.
we start to see a change, low-pressure sitting out to the | :10:47. | :10:49.
north and west of us but we have just enough influence that high | :10:50. | :10:52.
sitting across northern to keep the showers away through the day on | :10:53. | :10:57.
Thursday, where with southerly winds that really lift the temperatures to | :10:58. | :10:58.
highs For the weekend, looking a bit | :10:59. | :11:00.
showery on Saturday, dry and brighter on Sunday and if we go back | :11:01. | :11:02.
to the temperatures in the next couple days, you see those highs on | :11:03. | :11:05.
Thursday. He is John Hammond with the national | :11:06. | :11:18.
this cyclone Debbie crashes onto the Queensland coast with violent winds | :11:19. | :11:26.
and flooding rains, that will head southwards in the next | :11:27. | :11:27. |
