A five-year-old girl from Berkshire died needlessly because ambulance

:00:10.:00:13.

staff sent to help her failed to use a simple defibrillator

:00:14.:00:16.

A coroner today recorded that neglect contributed

:00:17.:00:24.

Her family say they've finally been given answers

:00:25.:00:28.

It was here where Lilly-May collapsed as she ran out of school

:00:29.:00:33.

as normal at the end of the day to greet her mum and her

:00:34.:00:37.

What nobody knew then though was she had a genetic heart defect.

:00:38.:00:46.

Two of the mums here that afternoon were trained nurses.

:00:47.:00:48.

They carried out chest compressions while they waited for an ambulance.

:00:49.:00:51.

That arrived within eight minutes but that is when mistakes

:00:52.:00:53.

The first paramedic wasted precious seconds carrying Lilly-May

:00:54.:00:58.

to the ambulance and then once inside took some minutes more

:00:59.:01:01.

before connecting her to a defibrillator machine.

:01:02.:01:03.

Crucially that paramedic then misinterpreted the information

:01:04.:01:04.

from the machine and decided not to use it to kick-start

:01:05.:01:07.

Further medical experts arrived and they also failed to spot

:01:08.:01:13.

that they could and should have administered an electric shock.

:01:14.:01:17.

Had Lilly-May been distributed within 15 minutes of her collapse,

:01:18.:01:19.

she would have survived and would still be with us.

:01:20.:01:26.

The coroner has found that Lilly-May's death was contributed

:01:27.:01:30.

to by neglect on the part of South Central Ambulance Service.

:01:31.:01:34.

We hope that everyone involved in this inquest will have learnt

:01:35.:01:37.

from these events and that a child will not die again in the future

:01:38.:01:42.

In response, South Central Ambulance have issued us a statement.

:01:43.:01:48.

It is also worth paying tribute to Lilly-May's family.

:01:49.:02:06.

They have decided to try to make something positive

:02:07.:02:08.

They fundraised in her memory and bought defibrillators for every

:02:09.:02:13.

Police investigating the death of a woman who was hit by a road sweeper

:02:14.:02:22.

in Swindon are looking to speak to a taxi driver who may have

:02:23.:02:25.

It happened outside Arkells Brewery on Beechcroft Road yesterday.

:02:26.:02:31.

It's understood the woman, who was 32, was going to collect

:02:32.:02:34.

Police say the taxi driver was not involved but could be a key witness.

:02:35.:02:41.

A young girl's being treated in hospital for serious head

:02:42.:02:44.

injuries after a ceiling collapsed at her school in Milton Keynes.

:02:45.:02:48.

It happened at Southwood School at an after-school club

:02:49.:02:50.

in the sports hall yesterday afternoon during the

:02:51.:02:53.

Two girls were hurt in the incident, one suffered minor injuries

:02:54.:02:57.

The other was transferred to the Oxford Children's Hospital

:02:58.:03:02.

and is in a serious but stable condition.

:03:03.:03:07.

Time is running out for 20 squatters who've been living in a former

:03:08.:03:10.

car showroom in Oxford for the past two months.

:03:11.:03:13.

They've been told they need to be gone by 10 o'clock

:03:14.:03:15.

on Monday morning to make way for new student accommodation.

:03:16.:03:19.

They're now talking to churches and have even turned to Facebook

:03:20.:03:21.

in an effort to find somewhere else to stay.

:03:22.:03:24.

A homeless man being made homeless again.

:03:25.:03:31.

Karl's among 20 people who've benefited from this unofficial

:03:32.:03:34.

Now they've been told they all have to move on.

:03:35.:03:41.

We've all started from being strangers and we've

:03:42.:03:45.

It seems very saddening to be parting.

:03:46.:03:51.

Campaigners angry about the lack of affordable homes in the city say

:03:52.:03:55.

they set up the shelter after finding the building

:03:56.:03:57.

Since then they've received donations such as sofas,

:03:58.:04:02.

But Wadham College owns the building and wants to use

:04:03.:04:08.

This place has given me safety, security, support, and without it

:04:09.:04:16.

Appeals have been posted on Facebook in a bid to find a new home.

:04:17.:04:25.

But campaigners have been speaking to churches and say they're

:04:26.:04:28.

hopeful about finding a new location in time.

:04:29.:04:33.

I'm a little bit optimistic about what can be solved

:04:34.:04:35.

I think there's a lot of good public will,

:04:36.:04:40.

and that's what we're relying on to help us find more permanent

:04:41.:04:43.

homes for the residents here, and the other people

:04:44.:04:45.

In a statement Wadham College reiterated its profound

:04:46.:04:50.

sympathy for the plight of the homeless in Oxford.

:04:51.:04:55.

But it said it's always made clear the squatters could not remain

:04:56.:04:58.

Karl says whatever the outcome he'll find a way to carry on.

:04:59.:05:04.

They were a part of childhood for many of us, now a new exhibition

:05:05.:05:14.

has been launched in Reading telling the story of Ladybird books.

:05:15.:05:17.

The University archive has over 20,000 original illustrations.

:05:18.:05:21.

More recently the classic pictures have been used

:05:22.:05:23.

Now a museum piece, Ladybird's pocket size ideal for little hands

:05:24.:05:33.

was no mere marketing ploy back in their heyday.

:05:34.:05:36.

It was this size because of paper rationing.

:05:37.:05:39.

What they had to do was figure out how to

:05:40.:05:41.

create an entire book in one piece of paper.

:05:42.:05:44.

That created the Ladybird book we know and love.

:05:45.:05:47.

If you are of a certain age, of course, it is very

:05:48.:05:53.

likely this is one of the first books you ever got to read.

:05:54.:05:56.

Of course, once you have mastered the basics,

:05:57.:06:02.

that opened the door to an entire world of Ladybird books.

:06:03.:06:06.

The collection here includes many favourites and thousands of original

:06:07.:06:09.

Jimbo works hard all week and only has a few hours at

:06:10.:06:14.

the weekend to spend with his family.

:06:15.:06:17.

He spends these hours watching sport.

:06:18.:06:20.

At last night's gallery launch, two lifelong fans, now behind

:06:21.:06:24.

a successful series of parodies using Ladybird's artwork.

:06:25.:06:26.

Joe Campbell, BBC South Today, Reading.

:06:27.:06:34.

That's it from the South Today late team this evening.

:06:35.:06:36.

There's more on the BBC News website.

:06:37.:06:38.

But now here's Alexis with the weather, good night.

:06:39.:06:47.

Good evening, clear spells at first allowing temperatures to fall to

:06:48.:06:52.

freezing in some parts but the cloud will increase and we will have rain

:06:53.:06:55.

during the course of the night. Mainly light and patchy and we could

:06:56.:07:01.

have the odd moderate to burst. A fairly mild start tomorrow. The

:07:02.:07:06.

temperatures will rise and they will be higher than today although we

:07:07.:07:11.

will see outbreaks of rain which may become more persistent tomorrow

:07:12.:07:14.

afternoon. Temperatures will reach 9010 Celsius. As we look ahead to

:07:15.:07:19.

the rest of the weekend, Sunday is a dry day, bubbly one of the better

:07:20.:07:25.

days. A fair amount of cloud, some brighter spells and a chance of an

:07:26.:07:30.

isolated shower. Isolated showers on Monday.

:07:31.:07:31.

few days it is that the stay miles. Outbreaks of rain at times

:07:32.:07:33.

particularly as we head into Monday. A much calmer day today after the

:07:34.:07:46.

nasty storm yesterday. Let's look at your pictures, tranquil from

:07:47.:07:49.

Hampshire, on the edge of the new Forest. Nice cumulus clouds from

:07:50.:07:55.

Hartlepool. Still a bit stormy, that sea. We are starting to get more

:07:56.:08:00.

pictures of bass coming

:08:01.:08:04.
