Hello I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. A holiday drama after | :00:08. | :00:13.
a coach crash in Berkshire. Genetic testing - why this mum wanted to | :00:13. | :00:18.
find out whether she had an aggressive cancer gene. That | :00:18. | :00:23.
terrible fear that you hang on to as a heavy weight has gone and I | :00:23. | :00:29.
feel incredibly lucky. Local objections as an inquiry looks at | :00:29. | :00:33.
plans to build hundreds of homes. And facing a difficult future toe | :00:34. | :00:39.
veterinary service for those on benefits which may have to close. | :00:39. | :00:45.
Sadly people will be faced with difficult decisions about what best | :00:45. | :00:53.
to do for their animal. A coach carrying a group of school children | :00:53. | :00:56.
from Croatia has been involved in a crash in West Berkshire. Almost 20 | :00:56. | :00:59.
youngsters are understood to have suffered minor injuries. The | :00:59. | :01:01.
accident happened on the A417 Wantage Road during this morning's | :01:01. | :01:04.
rush hour. After the crash, the coach party was taken to a local | :01:04. | :01:07.
school. The coach driver has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous | :01:07. | :01:17.
:01:17. | :01:21. | ||
driving. Joe Campbell was at the scene this morning. The coach was | :01:21. | :01:28.
on its way to Oxford when it collided with a lorry at about | :01:28. | :01:35.
8.306789 on group a group of 40 teachers and pupils from Croatia. | :01:35. | :01:40.
They had been staying with families in the Reading area. This man has | :01:40. | :01:46.
been walking his dog and went to help after speaking to the driver. | :01:46. | :01:53.
He said he dry tried to avoid them, but with the truck tilting over, it | :01:53. | :01:57.
caught the back of his truck and took the windows out. With most of | :01:58. | :02:01.
the 20 youngsters hurt having suffered only minor injurys, the | :02:01. | :02:07.
decision was taken not to transport them to hospital. Instead they were | :02:07. | :02:12.
brought to this school, where paramedic were able to treat them. | :02:12. | :02:17.
Mostly for injuries suffered when they showered with broken glass. | :02:17. | :02:21.
The damage was clear as police removed the coach from the crash | :02:21. | :02:27.
scene. The vehicle's 43-year-old driver, a Croatian national, was | :02:27. | :02:33.
awe rested at the roadside. -- arrested at the roadside. They | :02:33. | :02:38.
struggled with the language barrier. Back in the children's home town, | :02:38. | :02:42.
it emerged part of their reason for the visit had been to improve their | :02:42. | :02:49.
English. TRANSLATION: Colleagues tell me everything is OK. We have | :02:49. | :02:54.
had text messages, all positive. I have spoken to the grandmother of | :02:54. | :02:59.
one boy who says he is OK. They were frightened, but that is normal | :02:59. | :03:06.
for a 15-year-old kid. Today a second coach picked up the 36 | :03:06. | :03:10.
teenager and their teachers from the school. Taking them on to tour | :03:11. | :03:15.
Oxford as they had planned. Police were speaking to the coach driver | :03:15. | :03:21.
through a translator to get his account of the crash. One of the | :03:21. | :03:24.
men at the centre of the infamous Lapland New Forest theme park has | :03:24. | :03:27.
been found guilty of threatening a senior Crown Court lawyer shortly | :03:27. | :03:29.
before his trial got underway. Henry Mears from Brighton was | :03:29. | :03:32.
originally sentenced to thirteen months in prison after being found | :03:32. | :03:34.
guilty of deliberately misleading visitors with false advertising. | :03:34. | :03:37.
Today a judge also found him guilty of contempt of court and increased | :03:37. | :03:40.
his sentence. Allen Sinclair's been following the case. Remind us of | :03:40. | :03:50.
:03:50. | :03:55. | ||
the background to all this. Henry Mears was responsible for the | :03:55. | :04:00.
advertising of land land New Forest. That advertising in newspapers | :04:00. | :04:07.
promised much. But the event failed to live up to to promise. Instead | :04:07. | :04:12.
of winter Wonderland, visitors got a day of disappointment. The | :04:13. | :04:17.
village was a few sheds in the field with some fake snow. There | :04:17. | :04:22.
were long queues to see father Christmas. Trading Standards | :04:22. | :04:26.
received 5,000 complaint and prosecuted those responsible with | :04:26. | :04:30.
false advertising. It was during the run up to the trial when Henry | :04:30. | :04:34.
Mears threatened the then prosecution barrister, Gary Lucie, | :04:34. | :04:41.
that was taken as a potential contempt of court. The evidence was | :04:41. | :04:46.
heard yesterday and today he was found guilty. Yes. Two different | :04:46. | :04:53.
versions of events. One was relayed to the judge and she has decided | :04:53. | :04:59.
that Henry Mears was indeed making a threat. He did indeed commit a | :04:59. | :05:03.
contempt of court. The original barrister had to be replaced. That | :05:03. | :05:09.
delayed to the trial and added to the costs. Today Lenry pleers was | :05:09. | :05:14.
give an 28-day -- Henry Mears was given a 28-day sentence and ordered | :05:14. | :05:19.
to pay costs. Mears and his brother, Victor are now actually out of | :05:19. | :05:25.
prison again. They're back at their homes in Brighton, serving out the | :05:25. | :05:33.
remainder of their original 13- month sentence on a home detention | :05:33. | :05:36.
curfew. Thank you. The number of women being referred for genetic | :05:36. | :05:39.
testing for cancer has almost doubled in the last four years, | :05:39. | :05:42.
according to doctors in the south. One in 10 cancers is genetic, and | :05:42. | :05:46.
patients found to carry the BRACCA 2 gene can be up to 85% more likely | :05:46. | :05:49.
to develop cancer. A young mother from Newbury opted to have her | :05:49. | :05:52.
ovaries and breasts removed after testing positive for the gene. | :05:52. | :05:54.
She's now calling for more research into preventative medicine. | :05:54. | :06:04.
:06:04. | :06:07. | ||
Katharine Da Costa has been to meet her. Quality time with the family. | :06:07. | :06:11.
Claire savours every momentment last year she was told she had | :06:11. | :06:20.
inherited a gene which put her at a higher risk of developing ovarian | :06:20. | :06:24.
cancer. It was so horrifying and my instinct was to think about my | :06:24. | :06:29.
children of realising the implications for them. And on a | :06:29. | :06:34.
selfish level thinking I might not be here to look after them. Because | :06:34. | :06:37.
several members of her family developed cancer at a young age, | :06:37. | :06:43.
she was referred by her GP to a genetic clinic. Doctor here test up | :06:43. | :06:48.
to 70 patients a week. Those found to be carrying the BRACCA gene are | :06:48. | :06:56.
given advice and support. They're mums, aunty, grandmothers never had | :06:56. | :07:00.
these choices and had to cope with the cancers. Whereas at least the | :07:00. | :07:08.
patients that we have now can choose if they want to undergo | :07:08. | :07:13.
risk-redueing -- risk reducing surgery or undergo screening. | :07:13. | :07:18.
Claire opted for surgery. After having her ovaries removed, a | :07:18. | :07:22.
surgeon carried out a 13-hour operation to remove her breast and | :07:22. | :07:27.
reconstruct them using fat from her stomach. Claire has been blogging | :07:27. | :07:31.
about her experience for eight months and got 15,000 followers | :07:31. | :07:36.
from all over the world, and says it is a huge relief her journey's | :07:36. | :07:44.
finally over. It is euphoric. It is that sudden, it's gob, -- it's gone | :07:45. | :07:51.
that, risk has gone, that fear that you hang on to has gone and I feel | :07:52. | :07:57.
incredibly lucky. Ben and Jemma have a 50/50 chance of carrying the | :07:57. | :08:02.
same gene. Claire wants to see more research to protect not only her | :08:02. | :08:08.
own children, but thousands of other families too. A little | :08:08. | :08:12.
earlier I spoke to Dr Kat Arney from Cancer Research UK and I began | :08:12. | :08:15.
by asking her why there had been this rise in the number of people | :08:15. | :08:22.
seeking genetic testing. It is difficult to know exactly why the | :08:22. | :08:27.
numbers are going up. Maybe people are hearing you can get a test. And | :08:27. | :08:32.
you can help reduce your risk. It would be interesting to find out | :08:32. | :08:36.
why there is this increase and whether it is people wants to take | :08:36. | :08:41.
positive steps to controlling their cancer risk. It is very invasive | :08:41. | :08:49.
surgery, if flay do discover they have this particular gene, bra ka 2. | :08:49. | :08:55.
Are there other treatments? It does tend to be nor more aggressive | :08:55. | :08:59.
cancers that are caused. There are some exciting new drugs that are | :08:59. | :09:04.
being tested that are designed to target these faults in those | :09:04. | :09:07.
particular cancers. It is a very difficult decision that women need | :09:07. | :09:13.
to make if they discover they're carrying these breast cancer genes. | :09:13. | :09:19.
Because it is a big step and a very big step to have have your breast | :09:20. | :09:24.
or ovaries removed. Some women may not want to do that. Or may not | :09:24. | :09:28.
want to know they have the gene. But it is something they should | :09:28. | :09:31.
talk about with their family and doctors. Because it can help to | :09:31. | :09:35.
reduce their risk. Of course, if there is a child, there is the | :09:35. | :09:40.
chances if that is being pass on they have a 50% of chance of having | :09:40. | :09:45.
the gene. At what age should we be testing? There noise at prescribed | :09:45. | :09:50.
age. Many people say that when a child is an adult they can make | :09:50. | :09:53.
decision about what they want to know about their own health. Again | :09:53. | :09:58.
that is something to be discovered within the family and with the GP | :09:58. | :10:05.
and medical practicers. Practitioners. Thank you. Still to | :10:05. | :10:08.

skills can stand up to the rig ours of virtual cricket. A 21-year-old | :10:21. | :10:24.
has been arrested over the death of a Bournemouth man who was found | :10:24. | :10:26.
stabbed in the street. Glyn Helliwell was discovered seriously | :10:26. | :10:29.
injured in Southbourne last week and died later in hospital. | :10:29. | :10:32.
Detectives are questioning the 21- year-old man on suspicion of murder. | :10:32. | :10:35.
Police are asking people living in the Parkwood Road area to look in | :10:35. | :10:41.
their gardens and dustbins for a knife. Detectives in Brighton have | :10:41. | :10:45.
issued CCTV pictures of a man they want to question in connection with | :10:45. | :10:47.
a robbery at a betting shop yesterday. He threatened staff with | :10:47. | :10:50.
a gun and escaped with around five hundred pounds. Police are linking | :10:50. | :10:53.
the robbery with one at another bookmakers in Hove last week in | :10:53. | :11:03.
which a man with a large fake beard demanded cash. The Eastleigh MP, | :11:03. | :11:05.
Chris Huhne, has entered the controversy over allegations of | :11:05. | :11:07.
phone hacking at News International newspapers. It comes as the | :11:07. | :11:10.
Guardian newspaper claims a police officer was paid to reveal details | :11:10. | :11:13.
of the former Reading West MP Martin Salter, after he opposed the | :11:13. | :11:16.
News of the World campaign for the introduction of Sarah's Law | :11:16. | :11:18.
designed to protect children from paedophiles. Mr Huhne says the | :11:18. | :11:20.
revelations throw into question whether News International under | :11:20. | :11:30.
:11:30. | :11:36. | ||
Rupert Murdoch can be seen as fit and proper owners for BSkyB. | :11:36. | :11:41.
this is going right the way across news corporation, there is a real | :11:41. | :11:46.
problem for Rupert Murdoch. He has to pass the fit and proper test as | :11:46. | :11:50.
a person to own a broad casting organisation F he does not pass, | :11:51. | :11:55.
this won't with be a question of stopping the BSkyB deal, but of him | :11:55. | :12:00.
having to get rid of Sky, because he won't be a fit and proper person | :12:00. | :12:04.
to control it. Getting your car clamped can be a stressful | :12:04. | :12:08.
situation on its own - even if you know you were in the wrong. But it | :12:08. | :12:11.
can be made worse due to the fact there is no law capping the limit | :12:11. | :12:15.
for what can be charged to release the car. Clamping firms can demand | :12:15. | :12:17.
what they like as it stands. Motorist Matthew Bernard has been | :12:17. | :12:20.
describing his experience when he had to pay hundreds of pounds in | :12:20. | :12:24.
cash in a public car park to get his vehicle back. Catharina Moh | :12:24. | :12:34.
:12:34. | :12:37. | ||
reports. Matthew checks his car having received it back from a a | :12:37. | :12:40.
clamping company in Southampton. He admits he was in the wrong and | :12:40. | :12:44.
shouldn't have parked in this private space over the weekend. His | :12:44. | :12:50.
car was clamped by one company and then towed away by Whites Car Park | :12:50. | :12:58.
Solution. They said he had to pay a 250 fee. A 160 release fee and an | :12:58. | :13:05.
84 holding fee. The total including VAT 564. If he can't | :13:05. | :13:12.
pay in cash, an extra 5% would be charged. Mr Barnard said they asked | :13:12. | :13:19.
him to meet in car park and if he was rude an extra 50 would be | :13:19. | :13:22.
charged. No filming of the dealings took place as the company refused | :13:22. | :13:28.
to go on camera and threatened to withhold the car for another day if | :13:28. | :13:33.
cameras were present. But we did watch what happeneded Mr Barnard | :13:33. | :13:39.
and his friend waited here and then one man from White's Car Park | :13:39. | :13:45.
Solutions pulled up. Mr Barnard said cash in an envelope was handed | :13:45. | :13:52.
over. I felt intimidated and I was unsure about the whole process and | :13:52. | :13:57.
I whether I would get my vehicle back and lose the money I had | :13:57. | :14:07.
:14:07. | :14:18. | ||
If you're experiencing clamping on towing, then they hold all the | :14:18. | :14:22.
cards. Because threfr got your car. You should certainly tell Trading | :14:22. | :14:26.
Standards if you think what happened was unfair and do tell | :14:26. | :14:31.
your local MP if you have a bad experience and you would like an | :14:31. | :14:35.
easy way of sorting it out. Next year the law will change, | :14:35. | :14:41.
preventing clamping and it will be a criminal offence to move or | :14:41. | :14:46.
prevent the moving of a vehicle without lawful authority. If you | :14:46. | :14:56.
have a story you think we should be A cross channel ferry service will | :14:56. | :14:59.

enough money, and there was a lack of demand from the freight industry. | :15:12. | :15:15.
An inquiry into plans to build hundreds of new homes on one of the | :15:15. | :15:19.
few open spaces left in Poole has begun. The area in question is next | :15:19. | :15:22.
to Talbot Heath, often described as the "green lung" of the town. This | :15:22. | :15:26.
is an area of farmland next to the heath where the Talbot Heath Trust | :15:26. | :15:28.
wants to build 400 homes, student accommodation, new university | :15:28. | :15:30.
buildings and affordable housing. The scheme was granted planning | :15:30. | :15:33.
permission by Poole Borough council in June last year, but that | :15:33. | :15:36.
decision has been called in by the Secretary of State. Tristan Pascoe | :15:36. | :15:46.
:15:46. | :15:57. | ||
reports. The village Trust was set up by two Victorian sisters, but | :15:57. | :16:02.
the Trust's plans to turn farmland into hopes and student | :16:02. | :16:06.
accommodation sparked protest and the decision was called in by the | :16:06. | :16:10.
Secretary of State. As well as increased traffic, locals are | :16:10. | :16:15.
concerned the proposed development will encroach upon the heath land | :16:16. | :16:21.

We're providing accommodation for local people. A lot of social and | :17:04. | :17:08.

of this goes back to local people. The inquiry lasting two week will | :17:12. | :17:18.

has been given just six months to break even or close down. The RSPCA | :17:33. | :17:36.
clinic in Shirley in Southampton helps animals belonging to people | :17:36. | :17:38.
on benefits or with disabilities. Demand has grown, but donations | :17:38. | :17:41.
have dropped. So now, as Roger Finn reports, the clinic has taken | :17:41. | :17:51.
:17:51. | :17:53. | ||
drastic action to survive. For 50 years the RSPCA the clinic has been | :17:54. | :17:59.
helping those who would struggle with commercial vets fee. I'm a | :17:59. | :18:05.

the retriever has a swollen ear. His owner is a carer on limited | :18:10. | :18:17.
funds A consultation here was 15. But last year the clinic lost | :18:17. | :18:22.
90,000 and four staff were made redundant and prices went up. A | :18:22. | :18:27.
consultation is now 18. People aren't happy, but the bottom line | :18:27. | :18:32.
is either we put up our prices now and keep going, or we don't and | :18:32. | :18:35.
next year they will have to pay private fees. So it is the lesser | :18:35. | :18:40.
of two evils. The value of the clinic is something this family | :18:40. | :18:48.
knows well. Because they can take their pets to the clinic. Having | :18:49. | :18:56.
animals has made a huge difference to their daughter who has autism. | :18:56. | :19:01.
She feels hen she is feeling low, she wanders off to the cat and dog | :19:01. | :19:06.
and spends time with them. She wants to work with animals as an | :19:06. | :19:12.
adult and our animals are good practice. At the clinic, this cat | :19:12. | :19:17.
is being given a general anaesthetic, prior to being | :19:17. | :19:22.
castrated. The family could no longer cope. In these tough times, | :19:22. | :19:27.
the clinic has seen a boom in demand, 100 animals are treated | :19:27. | :19:31.
here. But can the clinic pleat the demand? We're not here to make a | :19:31. | :19:39.
profit. That is not what this is about. But we can't leak 90,000. | :19:39. | :19:44.
I'm hopeful within six months we will look at it and hopefully keep | :19:44. | :19:54.
:19:54. | :19:56. | ||
it going. A huge crane has begun the process of removing the masts | :19:56. | :19:58.

what's been described as her most extensive restoration since the | :20:01. | :20:04.
Battle of Trafalgar. It'll be paid for by the Royal Navy. In the | :20:04. | :20:08.
coming weeks, 26 miles of rigging will be removed so a team of master | :20:08. | :20:11.
shipwrights and other specialists can work on them. Just a fifth of | :20:11. | :20:21.
:20:21. | :20:25. | ||
the original ship remains. That will be one to watch. And now sport | :20:25. | :20:35.
:20:35. | :20:35. | ||
and Tony is here with us. talking about the mental side of | :20:35. | :20:38.
sport. At this point of the programme, we all know what Sally | :20:38. | :20:42.
will say, it is on to sport. I know every move you're going to make. | :20:42. | :20:47.
You know what I'm going to do next? Of course it is the same, always. | :20:47. | :20:53.
OK. I wasn't expecting that actually. Well we have lost Sally. | :20:53. | :20:59.
We will look after the rest of programme and sport. Tony is here. | :20:59. | :21:08.
Cricket and sports science in Sussex. I've been to meet a | :21:08. | :21:10.
researcher from the University of Brighton who's helping give | :21:11. | :21:14.
cricketers a bit of mental stimulation. It is cricket's | :21:14. | :21:18.
ultimate challenge - batsman against bowler. They say catches | :21:18. | :21:24.
win matches, but runs and wickets are decided at each end of the | :21:24. | :21:31.
pitch. I have taken my guard against some good bowlers. Remember | :21:31. | :21:37.
Mushtaq Ahmed? He made me look silly. Then Shane warn at the rose | :21:37. | :21:44.
bowl and I had a good go against him. But this next challenge is | :21:44. | :21:53.
difficult. I'm against a computer. In a manner of speaking. A batsman | :21:53. | :22:01.
has Milly seconds to decide how to play a delivery. Karl Stevenson is | :22:01. | :22:07.
study this beheyior. 20/20 is so short and sharp you have to make | :22:07. | :22:13.
the right decisions. This is a way to help batmen do that 5 get in a | :22:13. | :22:19.
mind frame where nay look to pick bowlers and it is who can score the | :22:19. | :22:26.
most runs the quickest. I was challenged with facing a virtual | :22:26. | :22:35.
Saqlain Mus rack -- Mustaq, who bowls the doosra what fools the bat | :22:35. | :22:42.
mab. It is different and there is a slight subtlety. Using slight | :22:42. | :22:45.
variations. Its touch to pick and practicing on regular bowling | :22:45. | :22:49.
machines would not help. We train so much on bowling machines and all | :22:49. | :22:54.
it is training is can you see the ball and hit the ball. Not can I | :22:54. | :22:59.
tell where the ball's going to go and look for things in the bowler's | :22:59. | :23:05.
run up. The tests have been used by Hampshire and Sussex player, keen | :23:05. | :23:11.
to get an edge. Played. Plenty more practice needed for me. Good luck | :23:11. | :23:20.
to any players who have a goo go. They're having -- they're asking | :23:20. | :23:23.
for more volunteers. Onto day two of the County Championship match | :23:23. | :23:25.
between Sussex and Hampshire. It's been a frustrating day. This was | :23:25. | :23:29.
the scene about an hour ago at the Probiz County Ground as the players | :23:29. | :23:38.
were forced off for another shower. Amongst the rain 22 wickets have | :23:38. | :23:48.
:23:48. | :24:05. | ||
At the Oval there is a thrilling Rob Key is leading the way. Just | :24:05. | :24:12.
two wickets in hand. That will be a close finish. I'm back. Glad your | :24:13. | :24:22.
back. You were lonely. We want to pick you up on something. Did you | :24:22. | :24:27.
really hit Shane Warne? Don't you remember. It was my greatest moment | :24:27. | :24:34.
in life. Virtual? No real. This was real. That was real. It wasn't | :24:34. | :24:40.
special editing. But I think Shane went easy on me. You do surprise me. | :24:40. | :24:46.
Mustaq just said no, I'm going to bowl at this guy and we saw what | :24:46. | :24:52.
happened. You're quite good on the ceez? Not bad. -- crease. Now the | :24:52. | :25:02.

weather bringing out the butterflies this afternoon. Angus | :25:24. | :25:34.
took this picture in Oxfordshire. It was a dull day, unventful. | :25:34. | :25:42.
Tonight not much change. Cooler lan last night with some mist a -- and | :25:42. | :25:49.

cover. We should have a fresher night than last night with those | :25:56. | :25:59.
breaks, temperatures around 12 Celsius. We're losing about three | :25:59. | :26:03.
degrees from last night. It is a cooler night and I think by the | :26:03. | :26:07.
time we head into tomorrow, again a lot of cloud to contend with. But | :26:07. | :26:10.
this time I think not as disappointing in term of sunshine | :26:10. | :26:15.
as today. There will be some sunny spells. The best further inland and | :26:15. | :26:20.
probably more during the morning. A sea breeze along the coast. | :26:20. | :26:27.
Otherwise, light to moderate northerly breeze. Temperatures | :26:27. | :26:33.
around 20 Celsius. In the evening we may see some showers in the west. | :26:33. | :26:37.
Otherwise it will be dry, but cooler. Temperature around eight | :26:37. | :26:42.
Celsius in the clear spells with the risk of some patchy mist and | :26:42. | :26:47.
fog. Thursday is the best day of the week. There will be plenty of | :26:47. | :26:51.
sunshine and it will be dry. The winds will be light inland. But | :26:51. | :26:56.
breezy further east. On Friday, I think the bulk of day will see a | :26:56. | :27:01.
lot of dry weather. Some sunny spell and varying amounts of cloud | :27:01. | :27:07.
but rain is pushing in. You can see today's area of low pressure | :27:07. | :27:11.
pushing away and behind it a weakening front heading in on | :27:11. | :27:17.
Thursday night into Friday. Perhaps later on Friday bringing some rain. | :27:17. | :27:20.
Then Wednesday not too bad. Better than today, Thursday the best day | :27:21. | :27:26.
of the week. Friday, quiet with plenty of dry weather. Saturday, no | :27:26. | :27:33. |
