Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's programme. | :00:05. | :00:08.
Is it new hope for families in the battle to keep Southampton's | :00:08. | :00:16.
childrens' heart unit open? I am feeling much more positive. But we | :00:16. | :00:20.
will wait to see what the end of the year brings. | :00:20. | :00:22.
Stripped of its names. The war memorial vandalised for its scrap | :00:22. | :00:32.
metal. They are taking it for money. It's all aboard the tram with a new | :00:32. | :00:34.
restoration project. And in the beginning was the word, | :00:34. | :00:44.
:00:44. | :01:02. | ||
and millions more as this man Has Southampton's Children's Heart | :01:02. | :01:05.
Unit moved a step closer to being saved? Today an official survey of | :01:05. | :01:08.
public opinion has revealed strong support for it. The overall plan in | :01:08. | :01:11.
England is to have fewer, larger centres. The scale of the public | :01:11. | :01:13.
survey was significant. 75,000 people responded to the | :01:13. | :01:15.
consultation. The proposal that includes keeping Southampton open | :01:15. | :01:18.
was the preferred option among more than 1,000 professional | :01:18. | :01:22.
organisations. But it was the second most popular amongst the | :01:22. | :01:25.
public. As Chris Coneybeer reports, many supporters hope the future of | :01:25. | :01:35.
:01:35. | :01:37. | ||
Southampton's unit will now be more secure. | :01:37. | :01:41.
Aaron place with his young brother. He was born with serious heart | :01:42. | :01:46.
problems and has had several operations already. For his mother, | :01:46. | :01:50.
the suggestion that the heart unit at Southampton could close is a | :01:50. | :01:57.
worry. The result of the survey has given her a new hope. The report is | :01:57. | :02:01.
very positive for us. I feel that now we have been through that | :02:01. | :02:05.
consultation period and the campaign, we are in a much better | :02:05. | :02:10.
position now. I am feeling much more positive, but they will wait | :02:10. | :02:14.
to see what the end of the Year brings. I am hoping that be will | :02:14. | :02:21.
get the right result for us. basic percentage terms, the popular | :02:21. | :02:24.
vote it goes to a group of heart centres that does not include | :02:24. | :02:28.
Southampton. But local campaigns have distorted the figures add if | :02:28. | :02:35.
you take those local campaigns out, the survey puts the local group on | :02:35. | :02:41.
top. The professional vote in the survey is emphatically in favour of | :02:41. | :02:47.
the Southampton group. This is part of the process in which of the | :02:47. | :02:51.
decision-making body will come to its conclusion. It can all be be a | :02:51. | :02:57.
good thing. If the Southampton you that was to close, the implication | :02:57. | :03:03.
that go beyond the heart surgery team. It could affect support | :03:03. | :03:09.
services and the prestige of the hospital. The professionals will | :03:09. | :03:17.
advise, but ministers will have to take responsibility for this. | :03:17. | :03:21.
results of the survey are important to the campaign, but it is just a | :03:21. | :03:26.
survey. The actual decision on how children's heart services will be | :03:27. | :03:32.
placed around the country will not be made until the end of the year. | :03:32. | :03:35.
In a moment, we'll be getting a reaction from our political editor | :03:35. | :03:37.
Peter Henley, but first, let's speak to Professor Terence | :03:37. | :03:40.
Stephenson, President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and | :03:40. | :03:42.
Children's Health, a key stakeholder in the report. Thank | :03:42. | :03:47.
you for joining us. We had a lot of public consultation here, what | :03:48. | :03:55.
value do you put on it? There are 11 million children in England and | :03:55. | :04:00.
this report is about providing a safe and sustainable heart service | :04:00. | :04:05.
for all 11 million children. It is inevitable that public consultation | :04:05. | :04:09.
will throw up groups that will support their local centre, and I | :04:09. | :04:15.
understand that. You clearly heard families in Southampton saying that | :04:15. | :04:20.
they feel they have got more hope. Do you think that they should feel | :04:20. | :04:24.
encouraged by the news today? clear in my mind that no decision | :04:24. | :04:28.
has been made and no decision will be taken until towards the end of | :04:28. | :04:33.
this year. For most of my professional life, I have worked in | :04:33. | :04:41.
a centre that does not have children's heart surgery. I have | :04:41. | :04:51.
:04:51. | :04:51. | ||
had much experience of advising parents of travelling for treatment. | :04:51. | :04:57.
Thank you for joining us. So let's now speak to our political | :04:57. | :05:01.
editor, Peter Henley. It looks like people are taking a lot of notice | :05:01. | :05:11.
:05:11. | :05:14. | ||
of this public consultation. This is not an X Factor style vote | :05:14. | :05:18.
where the organisation the gets the most support among the public is | :05:18. | :05:22.
the one that is saved. It is much more important than that. Just | :05:22. | :05:27.
because Leeds it got twice as many names on its petition rather than | :05:27. | :05:31.
Southampton, it does not mean that the public have saved it. Neither | :05:31. | :05:39.
is it the expert who will come to logical decisions about travel | :05:39. | :05:44.
times and the best place. Politicians have to intervene, even | :05:44. | :05:48.
if there are some ulterior motives for them. We have to leave it to | :05:48. | :05:53.
them to come to a decision, to listen to the public and the | :05:54. | :06:01.
experts and finally make this difficult decision. | :06:01. | :06:04.
A war memorial in Portsmouth has been desecrated by thieves. The | :06:04. | :06:07.
monument in Kingston Cemetery has had four metal plaques, with the | :06:07. | :06:10.
names of civilians killed during the blitz in Portsmouth, taken from | :06:10. | :06:12.
it. Police are investigating and local scrap metal merchants have | :06:12. | :06:15.
been told to be on the look out. Sarah Holmes reports This is what | :06:15. | :06:22.
the civilians war memorial should look like. | :06:22. | :06:27.
But this is what it looks like today. That is awful. That is | :06:27. | :06:31.
really bad. I cannot believe anybody could do such a thing. | :06:32. | :06:37.
Money is short, and that is why they are taking it for money. | :06:37. | :06:43.
is absolutely terrible. It is disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. | :06:43. | :06:48.
Who is good to replace that? council says it will aim to replace | :06:48. | :06:54.
the plaques by a remembrance day. But the important thing is that | :06:54. | :06:58.
people do not forget what they stood for. It is very sad, but the | :06:58. | :07:03.
important thing is the names. Their names are remembered, they will be | :07:03. | :07:11.
remembered. We will remember them. To stop further thefts, the council | :07:11. | :07:21.
has removed metal plaques from other areas of the cemetery. | :07:21. | :07:25.
A Hampshire woman says she is prepared to risk her life to find a | :07:25. | :07:27.
cure for her potentially life threatening allergy. Nicola Tribe | :07:27. | :07:30.
from Farnborough is allergic to many fruits and vegetables. She has | :07:30. | :07:32.
a condition called Oral Allergy Syndrome which affects her mouth | :07:32. | :07:35.
and throat. Now Nicola is preparing to undergo revolutionary treatment | :07:35. | :07:38.
which could bring about a cure. Alexis Green has been finding out | :07:38. | :07:44.
more. There are many types of allergy. | :07:44. | :07:47.
20 million people in the UK suffer from some sort of allergy and | :07:47. | :07:50.
health experts say it is becoming more and more common. Nicola Tribe | :07:50. | :07:53.
suffers from Oral Allergy Syndrome which affects her throat and mouth. | :07:53. | :07:56.
There are certain foods she mustn't eat. As if that's not enough to | :07:56. | :08:00.
contend with, she also reacts to birch tree and grass pollen. | :08:00. | :08:03.
Meaning that Nicola falls into just 2% of the population with food | :08:03. | :08:13.
:08:13. | :08:17. | ||
allergies. I get blisters on my tongue, my tongue swells. Nicola is | :08:17. | :08:27.
:08:27. | :08:29. | ||
a sports teacher and a keen runner. She started with mild hayfever | :08:29. | :08:39.
:08:39. | :08:43. | ||
symptoms which are developed into a life-threatening condition. Like | :08:43. | :08:48.
Aled - -- My allergies have really affected my athletics. I have had | :08:48. | :08:54.
to put that on hold at the moment. I have become quite chesty. When I | :08:54. | :09:02.
was competing, it caused me great difficulty. She has been running | :09:02. | :09:08.
for half an our and this is what happens. I often break out in hives | :09:08. | :09:10.
when I am exercising, especially during hayfever season. I am very | :09:10. | :09:17.
allergic to birch pollen. She will soon be undergoing immunotherapy, | :09:17. | :09:23.
monthly injections of tree extract under the skin. If it works, she | :09:23. | :09:29.
will not be relied on this cocktail of drugs every day. We are trying | :09:29. | :09:38.
to improve her tolerance. After one year, she will require less | :09:38. | :09:43.
medication. After three years, she will not require anything. There is | :09:43. | :09:48.
hope for Nicola for the future. But for today, her struggle goes on. | :09:48. | :09:56.
I'd love running out here. I love running in the outdoors. It is | :09:56. | :10:05.
becoming a battle between me the trees. | :10:05. | :10:07.
Still to come in this evening's South Today. Living the dream, | :10:07. | :10:16.
Albion's golden start to the season. An inquest jury has returned a | :10:16. | :10:19.
verdict of accidental death after a Royal Marine died following a night | :10:19. | :10:22.
time training exercise in the Solent. Sergeant Andrew Pearson was | :10:22. | :10:26.
one of a group of marines carrying out the exercise last January. The | :10:26. | :10:29.
court heard a utility vest he had been wearing had not been strapped | :10:29. | :10:34.
on properly. He fell trying to scale the RFA ship Fort Rosalie and | :10:34. | :10:40.
drowned. One month on from the opening of | :10:40. | :10:43.
the A3 Hindhead Tunnel, work is now underway to restore the countryside | :10:43. | :10:46.
around the Devil's Punch Bowl in Surrey, It will create the largest | :10:46. | :10:49.
area of lowland heath in southern Britain by returning the route of | :10:49. | :10:54.
the old road to nature. Our Transport Correspondent Paul | :10:54. | :11:04.
:11:04. | :11:09. | ||
Clifton is live there tonight. Paul. Quiet here, isn't it? Until last | :11:09. | :11:14.
month, 30,000 vehicles a day crossed through here to Hindhead. | :11:14. | :11:17.
It was the biggest bottleneck on the road between Portsmouth and | :11:17. | :11:24.
London. Now the new tunnel is open, work has begun to dig up the old | :11:24. | :11:31.
road and cover it over. How do you remove all trace of a once busy | :11:31. | :11:41.
:11:41. | :11:42. | ||
road? You do it with this. A machine that's grapes up 700 tonnes | :11:42. | :11:47.
a day. The waste material is not taken away from the site, it is | :11:47. | :11:57.
:11:57. | :12:01. | ||
moved down the road and dumped. this stuff that we are digging up | :12:01. | :12:06.
with be moved away to restore the landscape to what it was in the | :12:06. | :12:12.
1830s. So you are taking the landscape back to the mid- 19 | :12:12. | :12:21.
century? This is the ancient of fraud from Portsmouth. It has been | :12:21. | :12:28.
here for perhaps thousands of years. The road was the Tory us for its 10 | :12:28. | :12:37.
mile traffic jams. -- was notorious. Next spring, it will be planted in | :12:37. | :12:44.
Heather. Ind 2 years, it will start to and in five years, you will not | :12:44. | :12:49.
know that there was a broad here. In Hindhead, the village is | :12:49. | :12:54.
changing. It is hoped that this work will start the rejuvenation of | :12:54. | :12:58.
a community once torn apart by traffic but which has now lost all | :12:58. | :13:03.
his passing trade. I have been reporting here for more than 20 | :13:03. | :13:07.
years and this is the first time I have not had to shout over the roar | :13:07. | :13:13.
of the traffic. You can see how the board has been trapped -- the road | :13:13. | :13:22.
has been cut into the side of the devil's Punchbowl. This will all be | :13:22. | :13:28.
filled in and the contours will be restored. It will be done this year, | :13:28. | :13:33.
the heather planting will be completed next spring. | :13:33. | :13:39.
Thank you. The first purpose-built disabled | :13:39. | :13:41.
beach huts in the country were opened along Bournemouth's seafront | :13:41. | :13:43.
today. Local residents provided advice throughout the design and | :13:44. | :13:48.
their build. The four Boscombe huts can accommodate up to four | :13:48. | :13:54.
wheelchair users. A piece of Southampton history is | :13:54. | :13:57.
being restored to its former glory. Three 1930s' trams are being moved | :13:57. | :14:00.
out of storage and on to the site of the proposed Aeronautica Museum | :14:00. | :14:03.
in the city's docks. It is hoped they will be used to transport | :14:03. | :14:08.
visitors to the 15 million attraction. Andrew Giddings reports. | :14:08. | :14:16.
Back on the streets of Southampton for the first time in decades. | :14:16. | :14:20.
Restoration has been proposed for a number of years, but these trams | :14:20. | :14:30.
have finally become out of retirement. Southampton has got | :14:30. | :14:34.
great heritage and great history that we need to make more of. This | :14:34. | :14:40.
is a first step to see whether we might once again see a tram | :14:40. | :14:45.
operating in Southampton. Try arms were once a familiar sight in many | :14:45. | :14:49.
of our towns and cities. In Southampton, they were replaced by | :14:49. | :14:55.
buses in the 1950s. But they are still fondly remembered. | :14:55. | :15:04.
travelled on these things, it is so exciting. I travelled on these | :15:04. | :15:09.
trams down Southampton High Street. We have got the site, we have got | :15:09. | :15:16.
the assets and we have the enthusiasm. All that is needed is | :15:17. | :15:26.
:15:27. | :15:32. | ||
money and years of loving restoration. | :15:32. | :15:35.
A 50 metre observation tower could be open in Weymouth in time for | :15:35. | :15:37.
next year's Olympic sailing events. Councillors in the town have | :15:37. | :15:40.
approved plans for the 3 million visitor attraction. It would | :15:40. | :15:43.
contain a rotating pod that would hold 50 people. Simon Clemison | :15:43. | :15:50.
explains. London, Blackpool, Portsmouth, and | :15:50. | :15:54.
now Weymouth could have its own power. Our passion for looking at | :15:54. | :15:58.
the world from above seems only to have grown since the invention of | :15:58. | :16:03.
the left. Part of the idea behind the tower | :16:03. | :16:07.
is to try to make this pier a more attractive place to come. At a cost | :16:07. | :16:11.
of around 3 million, it will rise up about 170 ft into the air. | :16:11. | :16:14.
Visitors will be able to climb into a glass pod which will then slowly | :16:14. | :16:18.
make its way to the top from where they will be able to fully | :16:18. | :16:24.
appreciate this stretch of the Dorset coast. I come from the -- | :16:25. | :16:29.
from the a Portsmouth, and the spinnaker tower is much nicer. | :16:29. | :16:32.
There is a lot of competition, so I do not know are there will be a | :16:32. | :16:37.
queue of people going there. company which owns the Sea Life | :16:37. | :16:40.
Park have put forward plans to the Borough Council. The attraction is | :16:40. | :16:44.
not being built for the Olympics, but if it is completed in time, the | :16:44. | :16:47.
owners know that the world will be tuning in. We're very confident | :16:47. | :16:52.
about it. We are experienced in building visitor attractions. We | :16:52. | :16:55.
are confident that it will be ready and operational in time for the | :16:55. | :17:02.
Olympics. Whatever you may think of it, this is a major addition to the | :17:02. | :17:05.
skyline and a big departure for a seaside resort trying to rebrand | :17:05. | :17:15.
:17:15. | :17:23. | ||
itself for the 21st century. It is going to be good. Sport, and | :17:23. | :17:28.
a golden start for Albion. I could smell and upset last night, | :17:28. | :17:35.
but I did not know which game. Fantastic for Brighton. | :17:35. | :17:38.
There were 17,000 fans inside the Amex to see if Albion could pull | :17:38. | :17:42.
off an upset. It would be a long and exciting night, commentary from | :17:42. | :17:50.
Martin Fisher. Craig Mackail-Smith is in! It hit | :17:50. | :18:00.
:18:00. | :18:01. | ||
the post. Agonisingly close. Will he be as effective on this right | :18:01. | :18:11.
:18:11. | :18:12. | ||
hand side? Craig Mackail-Smith to the back post. Five minutes into | :18:12. | :18:16.
extra-time and Brighton's record signing breaks the deadlock. A | :18:16. | :18:25.
chance to get a shot away. No time for the corner! Brighton have | :18:25. | :18:35.
:18:35. | :18:35. | ||
pulled off one of the shocks of the round. We need to keep things calm. | :18:35. | :18:40.
We have had a dream start. It is getting bigger and better. At the | :18:40. | :18:50.
:18:50. | :18:53. | ||
same time, we need to make sure that we keep playing as we are. | :18:53. | :18:59.
Second half, and there was still low score, I thought we were on top | :18:59. | :19:05.
of them. What a fantastic game, it was great, we are heading in the | :19:05. | :19:15.
:19:15. | :19:19. | ||
A Well done Brighton. Southampton have pulled out of a | :19:19. | :19:22.
deal to sign Bristol City defender Liam Fontaine. The player is still | :19:22. | :19:25.
shaking off an ankle injury. Meanwhile Reading have signed the | :19:25. | :19:27.
Queens Park Rangers and Latvian defender Kaspars Gorkss. He has | :19:27. | :19:30.
agreed a three-year deal at the Madejski Stadium and arrives amid | :19:30. | :19:33.
fans' calls for reinvestment in the team, a team that hasn't had a | :19:33. | :19:39.
great few days. The Royals slumped at League One | :19:40. | :19:42.
Charlton in a round-one tie last night. Paul Benson catching a | :19:42. | :19:45.
dosing defence with the first. Jason Euell then headed Charlton | :19:45. | :19:48.
into a 2-0 lead, and although Shaun Morrison got one back, Reading went | :19:48. | :19:51.
out. Bournemouth were not disgraced against Premier League opposition, | :19:51. | :19:56.
but West Brom were too strong at Dean Court. They were two up by | :19:56. | :20:00.
half time through Jerome Thomas and Marc-Antoine Fortune. Steve Lovell | :20:00. | :20:03.
made it 2-1, but Albion quickly scored two more. Lee Bradbury's men | :20:03. | :20:08.
go out. Crawley conceded two goals in four minutes at Crystal Palace, | :20:08. | :20:15.
both from Wilfried Zaha in a round one defeat. | :20:15. | :20:18.
Tonight it's Aldershot Town's delayed first round tie at West Ham. | :20:18. | :20:21.
Listeners in the BBC Surrey region can follow all the action live from | :20:21. | :20:24.
Upton Park. And the goals from that game and, | :20:24. | :20:26.
indeed, all of Tuesday's fixtures, including Brighton's win over | :20:26. | :20:29.
Sunderland, are on the Football League show at 11.30 tonight on BBC | :20:29. | :20:39.
:20:39. | :20:42. | ||
Sussex remain top of Group A in the CB 40 League despite last night's | :20:42. | :20:45.
loss to Kent at Hove. Meanwhile, Hampshire's chances of staying in | :20:45. | :20:47.
division one of the county championship appear to be receding | :20:47. | :20:49.
championship appear to be receding after being bowled out for 179 in | :20:49. | :20:56.
their rain affected match with Worcestershire. | :20:56. | :21:00.
At Grace Road a century from Steve Davies helped Surrey build a big | :21:00. | :21:05.
lead over Leicestershire on first innings. | :21:05. | :21:08.
Hundreds of England's top bowls players are in Worthing for a | :21:08. | :21:10.
fortnight for the Bowls England National Championships. This year | :21:10. | :21:12.
the competition has made a comparatively radical move to | :21:12. | :21:15.
create a more trendy image. But some traditionalists are not happy. | :21:15. | :21:17.
some traditionalists are not happy. Sean Killick has been finding out | :21:17. | :21:21.
more. Wearing Burgundy trousers may seem | :21:21. | :21:29.
harmless, but it is a radical set here. For decades, players have | :21:29. | :21:34.
been required to wear white, but the dress code has been changed. | :21:34. | :21:41.
But some here are seeing dead in a different sense. I'm a | :21:41. | :21:51.
:21:51. | :21:51. | ||
traditionalist. White shirt and club tie. They do not look nice. | :21:51. | :21:57.
think it is prudent, it is everybody an identity. -- I think | :21:57. | :22:05.
it is brilliant. It is very encouraging, especially for the | :22:05. | :22:10.
youngsters. The bold stride is aimed at modernising the game's | :22:10. | :22:20.
:22:20. | :22:20. | ||
image. It is a fashion, it is the thing to do. Perhaps of this has an | :22:21. | :22:26.
important place in bowling. Worcestershire claimed that the | :22:26. | :22:32.
national title for peers. Other events continue until Sunday with | :22:32. | :22:37.
an even wider range of colourful trousers expected to be stepping | :22:37. | :22:43.
out onto the greens. Big change. | :22:43. | :22:47.
Very controversial. We did it up in cricket. | :22:47. | :22:56.
It has taken a long time for them to be part of the game in cricket. | :22:56. | :23:03.
What this carefully. What are your plans over the next | :23:03. | :23:06.
few days? Well, let me tell you what David Bathurst from West | :23:06. | :23:11.
Sussex is up to. He's doing a spot of reading. In fact, quite a lot of | :23:11. | :23:13.
reading. He'll be reading aloud from the | :23:13. | :23:16.
King James Bible for five days, without sleep. Mark Sanders saw him | :23:16. | :23:23.
start at the church in Barnham. After a hug from his daughter, it | :23:23. | :23:33.
:23:33. | :23:37. | ||
all began. It is now at 9 o'clock. I am rows starting my reading. In | :23:37. | :23:44.
the beginning... He will be reading aloud from the King James Bible for | :23:44. | :23:51.
the next 10 deep -- five days. With the support of his family, he aims | :23:51. | :23:59.
to break a world record. I think he would do really well. It will be | :24:00. | :24:06.
difficult not to have sleep. rested on the 7th day... Just | :24:06. | :24:11.
before he started, he explained what was involved. I have to be | :24:11. | :24:17.
continuous for five days, I am not allowed to go to bed. I am allowed | :24:17. | :24:24.
a 20 minute rest ofs after four hours activity. What sort of man | :24:25. | :24:29.
takes on a challenge like this? have done a lot of long recitations | :24:29. | :24:38.
of the past. I have recited the entire works of Gilbert and | :24:38. | :24:43.
Sullivan from memory. Marathon at recitals. I have the suspicion that | :24:43. | :24:49.
he is a better have a brain box. Yes, it is a bit unbalanced. He is | :24:49. | :24:54.
very clever, very articulate, but he cannot put up a notice board at | :24:54. | :25:01.
home or bring home operator of milk -- or remember to bring home a pint | :25:01. | :25:11.
:25:11. | :25:13. | ||
of milk. Spare a thought for him as you go to bed tonight. | :25:13. | :25:19.
Presumably you can go to the church and support him. I hope it all goes | :25:19. | :25:24.
well for him. He is probably in the right place considering the rain | :25:24. | :25:32.
Yes, we have had some lovely sunshine today, but we have got wet | :25:32. | :25:39.
weather on the way. Lovely sunshine to take us through the evening for | :25:39. | :25:49.
:25:49. | :25:52. | ||
most of us. But another band of rain is waiting to come in. We have | :25:53. | :26:02.
:26:03. | :26:05. | ||
a yellow morning in place for the Met Office. There are untrue that | :26:05. | :26:11.
thundery misprint -- pipping him from the West. That is where the | :26:11. | :26:16.
row see the heaviest downfalls. Temperatures of 12 up to 15 degrees | :26:16. | :26:21.
overnight. That band of blame will continue his way East would during | :26:21. | :26:25.
the course of the day tomorrow. A sunny start the day tomorrow, | :26:25. | :26:35.
particularly during the early rush our period. Gradually, once that | :26:35. | :26:42.
rain clears, there will be more showers arriving from the West. | :26:42. | :26:46.
Temperatures of 20 or 21 degrees. Those evening showers should fade | :26:46. | :26:52.
away and overnight, clear skies, but cloud increasing from the south. | :26:52. | :26:56.
An area of low pressure is arriving from the south of bringing more wet | :26:56. | :27:02.
weather. That alone will continue to move up towards the east of the | :27:02. | :27:07.
country. The eastern part has seen the worst of the wet weather on | :27:07. | :27:14.
Friday. Further west, likely to see some heavy showers. Soggy and cool | :27:14. | :27:18.
conditions where ever you are. For those of you heading to the Reading | :27:18. | :27:22. |
