Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's programme.

:00:04.:00:06.

Fuelling the economy - the new facility for a multi-million pound

:00:06.:00:15.

contract securing work for years to come. This is a culmination of an

:00:15.:00:20.

13 years of hard work by a lot of people. We can provide 100 extra

:00:20.:00:23.

jobs for local community. Welcome home - the engineers back

:00:23.:00:30.

from a successful tour of Afghanistan. If you do not like it,

:00:30.:00:34.

do not support Southampton! Tough talk from Bournemouth's

:00:34.:00:37.

chairman after a heated debate with fans over the club's future.

:00:37.:00:42.

could not make me leave personally but if my wife and children get the

:00:42.:00:48.

same it used they did last week, I would lead, yes. Joined me at the

:00:48.:00:52.

premiere about the film of a life of a Hollywood legend from his

:00:52.:01:02.
:01:02.:01:10.

A Sussex police sergeant to in the past has been commended for his

:01:10.:01:16.

bravery has been jailed for downloading and distributing more

:01:16.:01:23.

than 55,000 indecent images of children. 26-year-old Philip

:01:23.:01:26.

Savidge, from Burgess Hill, told detectives his collection of child

:01:26.:01:28.

pornography snowballed out of control. Today, he was jailed for

:01:28.:01:30.

27 months. Colin Campbell has the story.

:01:30.:01:32.

He was a Sussex police sergeant commended for outstanding bravery,

:01:33.:01:37.

but what no-one knew was that at home, Philip Savidge had compiled a

:01:37.:01:41.

massive library of child pornography. Tens of thousands of

:01:41.:01:46.

extreme images of young children which are shed over the internet.

:01:47.:01:52.

Indecent images of children being sexually abused are disturbing. Of

:01:52.:01:56.

all levels. And they were particularly disturbing with babies

:01:56.:02:02.

and toddlers. It is eight case of them being distributed for the

:02:02.:02:07.

sexual ratification of like minded offenders. Be a Sussex police

:02:07.:02:11.

officer for six years, he said his fascination with child pornography

:02:11.:02:20.

had spiralled out of control. total, he admitted to 42 charges,

:02:20.:02:24.

possessing the over 54,000 indecent images. At least 1,400 graded at

:02:24.:02:30.

Level 5, the most extreme. It was revealed he shed the images with at

:02:30.:02:34.

least 100 paedophiles and he likened his obsession to collecting

:02:34.:02:40.

sporting pictures. Sentencing him to 26 months in prison, the judge

:02:40.:02:43.

told the former acting police sergeant his offences were wicked

:02:43.:02:48.

and evil and that each picture represented a child being abused.

:02:48.:02:52.

And there were a horrendous number of images involved. Philip Savidge

:02:53.:02:57.

resigned the day he was arrested. He was involved in youth

:02:58.:03:01.

organisations, a Scout leader and cricket coach. Detectives are

:03:01.:03:06.

trying to trace those he shared images with online.

:03:06.:03:09.

A brand new facility which will secure jobs in Dorset for years to

:03:10.:03:12.

come with a multi-million pound RAF contract was unveiled today.

:03:12.:03:14.

Aviation firm Cobham, which is based at Bournemouth Airport, will

:03:15.:03:16.

convert Airbus A3-30s into the latest, state-of-the-art, air-to-

:03:17.:03:26.

air refuelling planes. The deal with Cobham is worth 150 million.

:03:26.:03:30.

Twelve A3-30s will be converted at a new hangar at the firm's base,

:03:30.:03:34.

known as Hangar 12. And the project will provide job security for more

:03:34.:03:36.

than 100 workers until 2016. Our reporter, Chris Coneybeer, was at

:03:36.:03:46.
:03:46.:03:50.

today's ceremony. They used to do it like this, it is

:03:51.:03:53.

1939 and non-stop transatlantic service topped up -- is topped up

:03:53.:04:00.

with fuel and the Southampton docks. These days, they call this Voyager,

:04:00.:04:05.

the new refuelling aircraft. It has a range of 4,000 miles and can fuel

:04:05.:04:11.

a variety of aircraft. Two have been completed in Spain but the

:04:11.:04:16.

remaining dozen, like this, will be converted in Bournemouth. Today at

:04:16.:04:21.

the ceremony in Hangar 12, purpose- built for the job, the project was

:04:21.:04:26.

formally unveiled. This will be the world's best of tanker aeroplane,

:04:26.:04:29.

there is nothing to compare the amount of fuel it carries and the

:04:29.:04:33.

reliability and efficiency with which we can deliver that fuel

:04:33.:04:39.

makes it a world beater. This is 13 years of hard work by a lot of

:04:39.:04:44.

people. Delighted that in these hard economic times, we are able to

:04:44.:04:48.

provide 100 extra jobs for the local communities. With an eye to

:04:48.:04:54.

the long-term, the company has taken on a dozen apprentices.

:04:54.:04:57.

was good luck, I studied engineering and the more you look

:04:57.:05:01.

into it, you cannot go wrong because it is so vast. I have

:05:01.:05:06.

always had a passion for aircraft and always wanted to work with one

:05:06.:05:11.

and to find the apprenticeship with Cobham is everything in one. It is

:05:11.:05:16.

a private financial initiative and has attracted controversy from the

:05:16.:05:18.

Public Accounts Committee which criticised the Ministry of Defence

:05:18.:05:26.

austere saying these initiatives were inappropriate for defence

:05:26.:05:30.

projects. -- last year. The entire fleet will be refurbished here in

:05:30.:05:34.

Bournemouth. It is an important moment for the company and means

:05:34.:05:39.

that further consolidation of high technology industry in this part of

:05:39.:05:44.

the world will take place. The Red Arrows display team has

:05:44.:05:47.

performed in public for the first time since the fatal air crash in

:05:47.:05:49.

Bournemouth last month. Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging was one of

:05:49.:05:53.

nine Red Arrows pilots who had taken part in a display at the

:05:53.:05:55.

Bournemouth Air Festival on August 20th. This afternoon, the eight

:05:55.:05:58.

remaining members of the Red Arrows team took to the skies at

:05:58.:06:06.

Chatsworth Country Fair in Derbyshire. And in Yorkshire.

:06:06.:06:08.

Flight Lieutenant Egging's funeral will take place tomorrow.

:06:08.:06:11.

After four months on the front line in Afghanistan, 100 soldiers have

:06:11.:06:13.

come home to their family and friends in Wiltshire today. A

:06:13.:06:16.

squadron from Two Two Engineer Regiment returned to Swinton

:06:16.:06:18.

Barracks at Perham Down near Tidworth, after deploying to

:06:18.:06:21.

Helmand Province in May to provide the front lines with water and

:06:21.:06:31.
:06:31.:06:33.

power. Ben Moore reports. It has been a long four months. Not

:06:33.:06:38.

only for those serving but also for those left behind. You are limited

:06:38.:06:42.

to communication and cannot pick up the phone when you want. I will

:06:42.:06:47.

keep my sunglasses on a. He has been doing an important job, how do

:06:47.:06:57.

you feel as if father? Very proud. You have obviously missed him.

:06:57.:07:04.

has been tough. And for one here, this family reunion will be a first

:07:04.:07:09.

meeting. He had been away two weeks and he as looking forward to it

:07:09.:07:14.

because he has not seen him -- he is looking forward to it. Only

:07:14.:07:19.

heard him screaming down the phone. The soldiers marched onto the

:07:19.:07:24.

square, one last formality before the most welcome order since May.

:07:24.:07:30.

To your families and friends, fought out! What have you been

:07:30.:07:36.

getting? Photographs and parcels. Nothing like the real thing. I was

:07:36.:07:44.

very happy to be back. What will you making do? Puzzles. Babette

:07:44.:07:49.

that is welcome relief! Definitely, I will take anything! And I am sure

:07:49.:07:57.

I will be on a trample the in! regiment were based in Helmand

:07:57.:08:01.

Province providing water and sanitation. All their work on the

:08:01.:08:05.

front line at forward operating bases, difficult but a time made

:08:05.:08:11.

easier by their families. Little things mean a lot. You lose contact

:08:11.:08:16.

with all reality in the UK. And just getting a letter or

:08:16.:08:19.

photographs or a magazine reminds you there is a normal world waiting

:08:19.:08:25.

for you. The regiment will return to Afghanistan in 18 months, but

:08:25.:08:30.

for now, it is a well earned rest. One thing makes this a particularly

:08:30.:08:36.

happy homecoming, every one of the 100 soldiers has come home safe.

:08:36.:08:40.

There have been no injuries and no casualties.

:08:40.:08:43.

A woman has died after a crash on the A34 near Whitchurch. Two

:08:43.:08:49.

coaches and a car collided at 11:45 this morning. The passenger of the

:08:49.:08:52.

car, an elderly woman, died from her injuries at Southampton General

:08:52.:08:55.

Hospital. The driver, an elderly man, is being treated at the same

:08:55.:09:01.

hospital for minor injuries. Closures remain in place and there

:09:01.:09:03.

are major tailbacks for motorists. Southampton footballer Dan Seaborne

:09:03.:09:06.

is in a serious but stable condition after an incident at a

:09:06.:09:09.

nightclub in the city. Police are investigating the incident and two

:09:09.:09:17.

arrests have been made. Sarah Holmes reports.

:09:17.:09:21.

Dan Seaborne was interned in an incident in Southampton early this

:09:22.:09:26.

morning. -- injured. Police were called to London Road just before 3

:09:26.:09:30.

o'clock when a man was found outside. After he was treated at

:09:30.:09:34.

the scene, he was taken to Southampton General Hospital. He is

:09:34.:09:39.

being treated for his serious head injury. His condition is stable and

:09:39.:09:43.

not life threatening. A spokesman for the club said they cannot

:09:43.:09:47.

comment on the situation but their thoughts are with the family of Dan

:09:47.:09:50.

Seaborne and they wish the footballer the best. Police say Dan

:09:50.:09:54.

Seaborne was involved in a minor incident in the club and was asked

:09:54.:09:58.

to leave. Another altercation took place outside the nightclub but it

:09:58.:10:05.

is not clear how he was injured. Two men, 36 and 39, had been

:10:05.:10:10.

arrested in connection with the incident. Dan Seaborne joined

:10:10.:10:13.

Southampton Football Club 18 months ago and has made a 43 first-team

One of the largest solar energy installations in the South has been

With a government subsidy for the power that's generated by the 288

:10:48.:10:51.

for Energy Chris Huhne said a subsidy was needed to get green

Well, our reporter, Alison Moss, has been to Brighton seafront this

And I think that in itself really keeps the appeal of Brighton Pier

going and going. I do not want it to change. I am happy with

:12:34.:12:39.

everything we have here. Brighton is a wonderful place and the pier

:12:39.:12:46.

is superb. I like the architect -- the Architecture of it. They still

:12:46.:12:50.

have that nice arch outside the fish and chip shop. I was brought

up in Brighton and have enjoyed so many memories here and would like

:13:17.:13:20.

an A-list Hollywood star. It's the sort of footage celebrity magazine

:13:20.:13:22.

editors would kill for. But recently discovered home movies of

:13:22.:13:25.

one of the greats in Hollywood's golden era have come to light.

:13:26.:13:28.

Lesley Howard starred in Gone with the Wind, Pygmalion and the

:13:29.:13:31.

Petrified Forest. People got the chance to see another side of him

:13:32.:13:35.

at the premiere of a documentary about his life at his former home

:13:35.:13:40.

in Surrey today. Tom Hepworth was there.

:13:40.:13:44.

A lasting tribute to a Hollywood legend. Lesley Howard was perhaps

:13:44.:13:49.

best known for his role in Gone With the wind but this footage

:13:49.:13:52.

broadcasts for the first time gives us a window on the family life of

:13:52.:13:56.

one of the biggest film stars of his generation. But it was almost

:13:56.:14:02.

lost forever as it was found in his daughter's Basement. I had already

:14:02.:14:07.

seen some film that has rotted and they were dust. When she said there

can of it and it was all right. I just went... Lesley Howard settled

:14:18.:14:23.

in Surrey in 1930 where he enjoyed the life of a country gentleman.

:14:23.:14:28.

This house was no stranger to garden parties in the 1930s, the

:14:28.:14:32.

likes of Clark Gable, Gary Cooper and Walt Disney were visitors. But

:14:32.:14:36.

Lesley Howard left his Hollywood lifestyle behind shortly before

:14:36.:14:46.
:14:46.:14:49.

The man you see playing in the snow with his daughter ploughed what he

:14:49.:14:55.

earned from Gone With the wind into making propaganda films. Gable's

:14:55.:14:58.

remarked he was the most dangerous the British had. Perhaps it is

:14:59.:15:03.

fitting the title of the documentary is, the man who gave a

:15:03.:15:08.

damn. The narrator has to thank Lesley Howard for saving his life.

:15:08.:15:12.

I was on a plane waiting to fly back to Bristol and at the last

This weekend's Dorset County Show is showing early signs of being one

:15:50.:15:53.

of the most successful yet. Organisers are reporting record-

:15:53.:15:56.

breaking ticket sales in the run-up to the show and livestock entries

:15:56.:15:59.

are also up on last year. Final preparations are being put in place

ahead of this weekend's event, which gets under way from 8:30

tomorrow. The Great Dorset Steam Fair will be

:16:04.:16:06.

in full swing this weekend, with more than 200,000 people expected

:16:06.:16:10.

to visit the 600-acre site. The fair runs night and day, so last

Bournemouth's Chairman Eddie Mitchell says he'll quit the club

Dean Court last night. Four months after they are almost

went into promotion, only two of Bournemouth's starting 11 are still

at the club. Six have been sold and come after a disappointing start to

the season, fans at last night's Forum showed their frustration.

all fought we would build on it and you have decimated the squat --

thought. For all the deals that were done, the good deals that were

:19:28.:19:32.

done, it has consolidated and build the club which has to be built from

:19:32.:19:36.

the bottom up, not the top down, and that is how I am going to build

:19:36.:19:41.

it. If you do not like it, go and support Southampton! The chairman

:19:41.:19:47.

later withdrew that comment but the tone had been set. Eddie Mitchell

:19:47.:19:50.

has run bomber for two years, the club has almost been promoted twice

:19:50.:19:55.

and is now debt-free. But the sale of players and apparent lack of

:19:55.:20:02.

reinvestment in the team have angered fans. It is just so

:20:02.:20:06.

emotional to hear people talk to me like this after the sacrifice I

:20:06.:20:12.

have made. You want to be out there with an empty bag clearing of the

:20:12.:20:16.

rubbish when you and the kit man of the last people because the club is

:20:16.:20:22.

nearly folding! How do you think you got in that position? Because

:20:22.:20:28.

you were foolish and pushed people... The club is almost 1.5

:20:28.:20:32.

million in the black but there was little further details. I am not

:20:32.:20:38.

from an accounting background. from a building background. I think

:20:38.:20:41.

really the conversation is pointless. And he gave an insight

:20:41.:20:46.

into a meeting with a player demanding a transfer. I said, you

:20:46.:20:51.

are not going anywhere. He said, I am not playing for you, I will not

:20:51.:20:56.

be able to perform. I said, what about supporters to pay to come and

:20:56.:21:02.

see you play? He said I do not care about the supporters! He knows

:21:02.:21:07.

about the pressures and sake most fans want to and to carry on and he

:21:07.:21:13.

will. -- and he says. These are difficult days, but most -- but one

:21:13.:21:23.
:21:23.:21:23.

of have had it worst acts like you have to say at least he fronted up.
