Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's | :00:02. | :00:04.
programme: Personal and confidential information of more | :00:04. | :00:11.
than a thousand patients is lost. Recognition for its role in | :00:11. | :00:14.
honouring military personnel, but who will pay for Wooten Bassett to | :00:14. | :00:24.
:00:24. | :00:26. | ||
become Royal? The Queen, she should pay it. | :00:26. | :00:29.
Freedom in the forest. The first adventure trail for people with | :00:29. | :00:31.
disabilities. And a final resting place. A | :00:31. | :00:41.
:00:41. | :00:48. | ||
memorial for the crew of a D Day The personal details of more than a | :00:48. | :00:54.
thousand patients in the South have been lost after two data blunders. | :00:54. | :00:56.
The East Surrey Hospital has admitted losing a memory stick | :00:56. | :01:01.
containing the confidential medical details of 800 patients. Meanwhile, | :01:01. | :01:04.
in Poole, two diaries containing the personal details of around 240 | :01:04. | :01:12.
patients were stolen from the boot of a midwife's car. And what makes | :01:12. | :01:15.
the situation worse is that Poole Hospital NHS says it doesn't know | :01:15. | :01:21.
exactly which patients have been affected. Roisin Gauson has been | :01:21. | :01:30.
following the story and has this report. | :01:30. | :01:33.
Poole hospital is the main port of call for expecting mothers in their | :01:34. | :01:39.
area. It deals with patients from Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset. | :01:39. | :01:44.
Those who use its services between September 2009 and December last | :01:44. | :01:49.
year may have had details:, but this is not an isolated case. The | :01:49. | :01:53.
confidential medical details of a further 800 people in Surrey are | :01:53. | :01:58.
also missing following the loss of a memory stick. It went missing | :01:58. | :02:02.
from the East Surrey Hospital in September last year. Both hospital | :02:02. | :02:06.
say there is no evidence that the missing information has been used | :02:06. | :02:11.
by anyone else. Poole hospital bills of around 6000 | :02:11. | :02:16.
patients each year and each midwife around 240. The diaries were the | :02:16. | :02:21.
only records of who had been seen so the hospital cannot pin down his | :02:21. | :02:26.
details have been stolen. The diaries contained information | :02:26. | :02:31.
including names, addresses and contact numbers as well as details | :02:31. | :02:35.
of previous visits. The hospital took the decision not to warn any | :02:35. | :02:39.
of them that the breach in Data Protection had occurred. | :02:39. | :02:46.
Dengie have a duty of care to let patients no? The issue we had is | :02:46. | :02:55.
identifying people. We did not want to alarm people unnecessarily. | :02:55. | :02:59.
Richard Drax represents a number of people who use the hospital. He | :02:59. | :03:03.
feels the management should have been more open. I always believe | :03:03. | :03:13.
:03:13. | :03:14. | ||
honesty is best. Albeit an accident or very bad luck, I think if that | :03:14. | :03:19.
is the case, it then I would like to know. Although the nurse his | :03:19. | :03:23.
diaries were stolen did not do anything wrong, security measures | :03:23. | :03:28.
have since been tightened up. All midwives are encouraged to use | :03:28. | :03:32.
electronic diaries and told to make sure any additional information | :03:32. | :03:36.
written down is kept to a minimum. Roisin Gauson is with me now. | :03:36. | :03:42.
Roisin, what reassurance is being given to the patients tonight? | :03:42. | :03:46.
Poole NHS Trust has told me that any information carried around by | :03:46. | :03:52.
the nurses only a man has a small amount of information. In addition, | :03:52. | :03:56.
electronic diaries are encrypted so a thief cannot access personal | :03:56. | :04:01.
information. Those diaries are only an offer, some nurses are still | :04:01. | :04:05.
using a paper diary, but are being told to keep them close at all | :04:05. | :04:13.
times. Elsewhere, Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust says it is now using | :04:13. | :04:18.
encrypted memory sticks to transfer the information and that the member | :04:18. | :04:20.
of staff concerned has been disciplined and recede further | :04:20. | :04:23.
training. Police have arrested two members of | :04:23. | :04:26.
staff at a care home in Crawley on suspicion of ill-treatment and | :04:26. | :04:30.
neglect. Orchid View in Copthorne specialises in dementia care. A 54- | :04:30. | :04:32.
year-old woman from Godstone and a 48-year-old man from Burgess Hill | :04:32. | :04:36.
have been released on bail. It is not yet known whether they're still | :04:36. | :04:40.
working at the home. Residents have been given the option of moving | :04:40. | :04:50.
:04:50. | :04:59. | ||
elsewhere. A man has been arrested for the attack of a teenage girl. | :04:59. | :05:05.
If 57 year-old man from Salsbury is being held on indecent assault and | :05:05. | :05:08.
possessing a firearm. As you may have seen on the | :05:08. | :05:11.
national news, the Prime Minister has rounded off the season of | :05:11. | :05:14.
political conferences with a big speech in Manchester. Did he do | :05:14. | :05:17.
enough to win over his supporters here in the South? Our Political | :05:17. | :05:19.
Editor, Peter Henley, is in Manchester. What did party members | :05:19. | :05:27.
make of Mr Cameron's rallying call? I think they were quite rallied. It | :05:27. | :05:29.
was a speech about having a can-do attitude. "Energised not | :05:29. | :05:37.
paralysed." difficult to do when the economic news is so challenging. | :05:37. | :05:40.
There was praise for the South's contribution to the motor sports | :05:40. | :05:42.
industry and the way Berkshire's Wellington College is partnering | :05:42. | :05:52.
:05:52. | :05:57. | ||
with academy schools. This was the reaction afterwards. We have a | :05:57. | :06:07.
small business and her urbanisation has made a big difference. He is | :06:07. | :06:15.
fantastic. Very inspirational. was getting going. He was | :06:15. | :06:19.
definitely pressing some buttons. Very sombre with the way the | :06:20. | :06:27.
economy is. I thought he came up to the end of it with a good crescendo | :06:27. | :06:30.
and an uplifting message to us all. It hasn't been all smooth sailing | :06:30. | :06:33.
with his supporters though, has it? There have been controversies over | :06:33. | :06:42.
the council tax freeze and house building? | :06:42. | :06:45.
It's been difficult for all three parties to present new ideas | :06:45. | :06:50.
against a background of such bad economic news, hasn't it? A long | :06:51. | :06:54.
section on house building. David Cameron saying I live in the south | :06:54. | :06:59.
of England and will protect the countryside. For anyone who | :06:59. | :07:04.
proposes -- opposes Development says -- he said it you can take | :07:04. | :07:08.
your opposition to the JobCentre. House building in the south-east | :07:08. | :07:16.
will be stimulus for growth in the economy. It is important for all | :07:16. | :07:22.
parties to create a stimulus in bad economic times. Absolutely. Labour | :07:22. | :07:31.
laying foundations for the future. As a coalition, they are very | :07:32. | :07:37.
United. Over the years the Wiltshire town | :07:37. | :07:40.
of Wootton Bassett has paid tribute to the many military servicemen and | :07:40. | :07:43.
woman from the South. Now, in less than two weeks, the town itself | :07:43. | :07:46.
will be honoured by becoming Royal Wootton Bassett. A special naming | :07:46. | :07:52.
ceremony is being planned in celebration. But the town is | :07:52. | :07:55.
worried about the cost and who will pay the 65,000 bill. Steve Knibbs | :07:55. | :08:01.
explains. Nearly 350 fallen soldiers have now | :08:01. | :08:06.
passed along this famous High Street. Support was unwavering and | :08:06. | :08:11.
that support has led to a royal status. It is an honour that has | :08:11. | :08:16.
come at a cost. Some of the cost are additional because we are | :08:16. | :08:21.
expecting people from out of town. If it was just how people, the cost | :08:21. | :08:28.
would be lower. We have to put on parking for about 4000 cars. All of | :08:28. | :08:35.
these things cost. The bill and 65,000 has to come from the | :08:35. | :08:41.
council. An appeal has already brought in 10,000, but people are | :08:41. | :08:46.
clear about who they think should pay. The Queen. She should pay it. | :08:46. | :08:52.
She has more money than any of us. I do not think we should have to | :08:52. | :08:58.
pay at all. Why bestow and on I knew and then say you have to pay | :08:58. | :09:04.
65,000 for it. I suppose we will all contribute, but especially the | :09:04. | :09:08.
government because it is a royal thing. The many things aside, there | :09:08. | :09:15.
is still great pride in this town. We were not doing this for any | :09:15. | :09:20.
reward, we were doing it to show our respect for what soldiers have | :09:20. | :09:24.
done. That was it. We did not expect to be rewarded for what we | :09:24. | :09:34.
:09:34. | :09:35. | ||
have done. It is just a natural thing that we should do. Welcome to | :09:35. | :09:45.
:09:45. | :09:45. | ||
Wootton Bassett! Soon to become England's third Royal Town. One on | :09:45. | :09:55.
:09:55. | :09:59. | ||
toper 16, the Princess Royal will be here to bestow royal status. | :09:59. | :10:02.
Still to come in this evening's South Today: Weather and sport with | :10:02. | :10:12.
:10:12. | :10:16. | ||
Reham and Kris. I will be here with this bought. | :10:16. | :10:26.
:10:26. | :10:31. | ||
And autumn returns tomorrow, but is Police are hunting a man who | :10:31. | :10:36.
attacked students on Tuesday night's consecutively last month. | :10:36. | :10:41.
He is seen here following one of his victims before assaulting her. | :10:41. | :10:45.
The man is described as being in his early twenties. | :10:45. | :10:48.
Explosives dating back many years and discovered in a lay-by on a | :10:48. | :10:51.
busy Dorset road were safely detonated today. The explosives, | :10:51. | :10:53.
with wires attached, were found inside a boulder alongside other | :10:54. | :10:58.
rocks on the road between Wareham and Wool. It's thought the device | :10:58. | :11:00.
was left over from construction clearance work, possibly from as | :11:00. | :11:06.
long ago as the 19th century. Campaigners concerned for the | :11:06. | :11:09.
future of a historic Sussex lido have staged a demonstration there | :11:09. | :11:14.
this afternoon. They believe the leaseholder of Saltdean Lido is | :11:14. | :11:17.
deliberately letting the business fail, so the site can be | :11:17. | :11:21.
redeveloped. But he insists that's not the case. Chrissie Reidy | :11:21. | :11:29.
reports. It was hailed as the most | :11:29. | :11:35.
innovative design of its kind in Britain and after -- and | :11:35. | :11:41.
architectural treasure. Campaigners insist Saltdean lido is purposely | :11:41. | :11:45.
being run down so the site can be redeveloped. We definitely feel | :11:45. | :11:50.
that this building has been forgotten. We want the council to | :11:50. | :11:59.
start legal proceedings to get the lease back. Dennis Audley he took | :11:59. | :12:04.
over the lease says campaigners have no need to worry. It is my | :12:04. | :12:08.
intention to restore the building in the future and to maintain it | :12:08. | :12:16.
permanently. To do that, we have to have some development on a lot less | :12:16. | :12:21.
a scale and it will not pick on the front of the building. In 2010, | :12:21. | :12:29.
plans were put forward to fill in the outdoors Paul unbilled 40 flats. | :12:29. | :12:33.
Campaigners formed the save Saltdean lido group to says the | :12:33. | :12:42.
site. Rumours that we are going to not the place down or fill the ball | :12:42. | :12:48.
in all build a block of flats... That is not happening? That is | :12:48. | :12:53.
definitely not happening. If anybody knows about planning | :12:53. | :12:59.
regulations, you cannot knock down a great to building. The people are | :12:59. | :13:02.
sending a clear message, we will not let flats be developed on this | :13:02. | :13:06.
site. The city council say they will do | :13:06. | :13:12.
whatever is necessary to ensure the future of this building is safe and | :13:12. | :13:18.
remains a complete -- community facility. | :13:18. | :13:22.
Lollipop men and women in Dorset are set to lose their jobs. The | :13:22. | :13:31.
county council has reduced crossing patrol from 51-61 -- and 61-51. | :13:31. | :13:36.
Patrols have been their subject of conversation by parents. | :13:36. | :13:45.
One of the Isle of Wight top tourist rest could be run by a | :13:45. | :13:52.
community group. It will save 300,000. The gardens were founded | :13:52. | :13:55.
in 1970. An ancient mill pond in West Sussex, | :13:55. | :13:58.
which supports a rich bird community in the area, could be | :13:58. | :14:01.
drained. The large pond in Crawley needs repairs which could cost up | :14:01. | :14:05.
to 8 million. Now the council is asking residents if it should pay | :14:05. | :14:15.
:14:15. | :14:25. | ||
Could soon be no more. It is fed by their it refer mall. The water mill | :14:25. | :14:35.
:14:35. | :14:35. | ||
here was reconsider she -- reconditioned recently. To actually | :14:35. | :14:40.
do any repairs of the dam, we have to remove the water from the lake. | :14:40. | :14:45.
At the same time we are doing that, it has to be closed off. We saw | :14:46. | :14:49.
there were opportunities to de sold the lake. Then I'll parts where | :14:49. | :14:54.
ducks can now walk across. council is consulting residents. | :14:54. | :14:59.
The cheapest option would be to train the pond. That would cost | :14:59. | :15:04.
three or 4 million. Alternatively for 68 million it could be | :15:04. | :15:12.
partially trained leaving an number of smaller palms. All 45 to 8 | :15:12. | :15:16.
million the dam could be fully rebuilt, all the silt removed and | :15:16. | :15:21.
the pond restored. That is the preferred option of the Local | :15:21. | :15:26.
History Society and many who come here to enjoy the beauty spot. | :15:26. | :15:31.
is Heritage, isn't it? It is such a shame if it all goes. It has been | :15:31. | :15:37.
there for donkey's years, they should keep it. Spend the 8 | :15:37. | :15:42.
million. Mel only waste it on something else. The council will | :15:42. | :15:46.
make a decision next spring, but it will be two or three years before | :15:46. | :15:52.
work gets under way here. The UK's first interactive forest | :15:52. | :15:55.
adventure trail for people with disabilities opened today at Alice | :15:55. | :15:57.
Holt Forest in Hampshire. The project is a joint effort between | :15:57. | :16:00.
the Forestry Commission and the Treloar Trust, which provides | :16:00. | :16:03.
specialist care for young people with disabilities. Sarah Holmes | :16:03. | :16:13.
:16:13. | :16:15. | ||
reports. For the students, this was a rare | :16:15. | :16:19.
opportunity to experience the Forest up close. The trail allows | :16:19. | :16:25.
the user to get really close to the trees and vegetation. Particularly | :16:25. | :16:30.
this Ben, we are so pleased with that. It enabled disabled people to | :16:30. | :16:35.
do what able-bodied children love to do. I think I can see and | :16:35. | :16:40.
knobbly nose. Before the trial was hard work for wheelchairs, but now | :16:40. | :16:46.
it is easy to negotiate so people can move around independently. The | :16:46. | :16:50.
staff have also designed a communication book so users can | :16:50. | :16:55.
talk about their experience. It is a dream come true that my kids have | :16:55. | :17:04.
come back and they have enjoyed the trail. I can quite clearly see that | :17:04. | :17:12.
they have put in a hard FO into making it accessible. I think that | :17:12. | :17:17.
it is a lovely place to be. Forestry Commission says it hopes | :17:17. | :17:22.
the work will be used as an example for other trails so that more | :17:22. | :17:32.
:17:32. | :17:38. | ||
people with disabilities can have access to the UK woodlands. | :17:38. | :17:40.
Aldershot Town have announced ticket details for this month's | :17:40. | :17:43.
glamour Carling Cup tie at home to Manchester United. These were the | :17:43. | :17:46.
scenes when the Shots were paired with probably the biggest club in | :17:46. | :17:51.
the world. And there's sure to be a clamour for tickets, with the match | :17:51. | :17:55.
set to be a 7,000 sell-out. It's the biggest game in the re-formed | :17:55. | :17:58.
club's short history. Season ticket holders will be able to buy their | :17:58. | :18:01.
tickets from next Wednesday. And if you went to the win over Rochdale | :18:01. | :18:04.
in the previous round, you can get your Manchester United tickets from | :18:04. | :18:07.
Saturday the 15th. Well, while all eyes are on that | :18:07. | :18:10.
Carling Cup tie, it wasn't a good night for Aldershot in the | :18:10. | :18:13.
Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Here's the pick of the action from last | :18:13. | :18:20.
night's matches. All the action came in the second | :18:20. | :18:22.
All the action came in the second half as Aldershot gave themselves | :18:22. | :18:27.
too much to do. The visitors went in front four minutes after the | :18:27. | :18:34.
interval. Young had no chance with the second three minutes later. A | :18:34. | :18:40.
fine finish doubling Oxford's advantage. The shops were given a | :18:40. | :18:48.
lifeline 14 minutes from the end. A clinical first-half performance | :18:48. | :18:53.
helps the Bournemouth past Yeovil. Two goals sent them on their way. | :18:53. | :19:01.
The second, thanks to questionable defending. It was 3-0 after half- | :19:01. | :19:11.
:19:11. | :19:12. | ||
an-hour. Yeovil rallied to score twice in the second half, but it | :19:12. | :19:18.
was too little too late. Portsmouth are hosting a friendly | :19:18. | :19:19.
Portsmouth are hosting a friendly against Russian side FC Rostov | :19:19. | :19:22.
tonight. It's to raise money for families affected by a plane crash, | :19:22. | :19:25.
in which an entire ice hockey team were killed. Many players and | :19:25. | :19:28.
officials from Lokomotiv Yaroslavl were among the 44 people lost when | :19:28. | :19:32.
their plane crashed on the way to a game last month. A number of those | :19:32. | :19:34.
killed were known to Pompey's Russian owners Vladimir Antonov and | :19:34. | :19:39.
Roman Dubov. Admission at Fratton Park tonight is just two pounds. | :19:39. | :19:48.
Kick off is 7.30pm. The World Cup winner's medal went under the | :19:48. | :19:52.
hammer today. The 72 year-old was a member of the squad when they | :19:52. | :19:57.
lifted the trophy in 1966, but he only received the medal two years | :19:57. | :20:03.
ago. A buyer paid 22,000 for the items today. | :20:03. | :20:05.
Organisers of this month's Great South Run have announced their | :20:05. | :20:08.
first major signing for the event. Double world marathon champion Abel | :20:08. | :20:11.
Kirui from Kenya heads the elite field in the ten-mile race, which | :20:11. | :20:21.
:20:21. | :20:28. | ||
takes place in Portsmouth and Southsea at the end of the month. A | :20:28. | :20:38.
:20:38. | :20:40. | ||
very poignant story we have now. It sank in the Solent more than 60 | :20:40. | :20:44.
years ago with the loss of 13 lives. Now a search is on to find the | :20:44. | :20:48.
families of those who died on the D Day landing craft. The idea is to | :20:48. | :20:51.
carry out a special memorial service which is being organised by | :20:51. | :20:54.
the Southsea branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club. Mark Sanders has the | :20:54. | :21:00.
story. The crew were so close to home after being in harm's way, but | :21:00. | :21:05.
in the approach to Portsmouth Harbour, the landing craft was | :21:05. | :21:10.
swallowed by the sea. It was lost in a terrible accident claiming all | :21:10. | :21:16.
13 lives on board. Nearly 70 years on, in the murk of the Solent, the | :21:16. | :21:21.
wreck was identified by the Southsea sub-aqua Club. The divers | :21:21. | :21:28.
got special permission to survey their Rec. People were lost and | :21:28. | :21:32.
this was their final resting place so we have made sure not to disturb | :21:32. | :21:41.
anything. Because it is dark and gloomy, the visibility is not good | :21:41. | :21:48.
at times, but that adds to the atmosphere of it. This is it, they | :21:48. | :21:57.
are on the beach plunging waist- deep. LCD 47 was part of the D-Day | :21:57. | :22:04.
armada. It's she was returning to Portsmouth when disaster struck. | :22:04. | :22:08.
And 7th June, 1944 and four miles from shore, she was in collision | :22:08. | :22:13.
with the battleships. The landing craft was sliced into. Of the 13 | :22:13. | :22:20.
crew, only one man was recovered but he died. The divers are | :22:20. | :22:23.
organising a memorial service at sea and are trying to trace | :22:23. | :22:29.
surviving families and comrade of the men who died. He for two months | :22:29. | :22:33.
of the loss of the landing craft was not reported so a lot of | :22:33. | :22:38.
families did not know what happened. This is the first opportunity they | :22:38. | :22:43.
have had in those 70 years to actually played -- paid their last | :22:43. | :22:50.
respects. Some of the families have been found and the nature of the | :22:50. | :22:53.
memorial service is being discussed with the Royal Navy chaplain. It | :22:53. | :22:58.
will be an act of remembrance to ensure that the loss of one landing | :22:58. | :23:04.
craft crew is not forgotten in the sweep of history. | :23:04. | :23:09.
It is very special if they could find the other families of those | :23:10. | :23:15.
who lost their lives so that they could be part of the memorial. | :23:15. | :23:19.
We have the weather now for the next couple of days. It is a cliche, | :23:19. | :23:26.
but it is Batten down the hatches. Bracing yourself. I have been | :23:26. | :23:32.
bracing myself every single day. Better be warned. Shall we have a | :23:32. | :23:37.
Better be warned. Shall we have a look? Of course it is turning | :23:37. | :23:39.
breezy and come through this evening and we have a little bit of | :23:39. | :23:47.
rain on the cards, so wet and windy seen. The talking point, clearer | :23:47. | :23:53.
condition starting tonight. The front to the north-west is slipping | :23:53. | :23:58.
South East would and behind it quite strong winds. As it clears up, | :23:58. | :24:05.
you can see fresher, caller conditions. Temperatures around 10 | :24:05. | :24:11.
Celsius for the far north. Tomorrow morning sets the scene, a colder | :24:11. | :24:16.
day to come. We will see stronger wind at and on those winds, we will | :24:16. | :24:24.
have showers through midday into the evening. A dramatic drop in | :24:24. | :24:31.
temp -- in temperature. Into the evening we see the show was eased | :24:31. | :24:40.
away. For the far north, around eight or 10 Celsius. For the far | :24:40. | :24:46.
south, 10 or 12 Celsius. Friday we have high pressure with us pushing | :24:47. | :24:54.
him from the south-west giving bright conditions. How far north a | :24:54. | :24:58.
high pressure will extend remains to be seen. That will be helpful in | :24:58. | :25:03.
keeping a cold front at bay. Dry conditions on Friday, but a little | :25:03. | :25:10.
bit on the breezy side. Not as breezy as Thursday. Temperatures | :25:10. | :25:19.
not as high on and -- not as high as on Monday. A few showers and a | :25:19. | :25:27.
noticeable difference. Autumnal weather, windy conditions, a touch | :25:27. | :25:32.
brighter on Friday, Saturday cloudy and Sunday chilly with the | :25:32. | :25:37.
possibility of rain. possibility of rain. | :25:37. | :25:44.
Repaired, I am prepared. Look at the satellite pictures and it is | :25:44. | :25:52.
quite funny. It's someone is now offering trips to space. Bailey | :25:52. | :25:56.
