You're watching South Today. Repairs begin after 1,000 homes are | :00:13. | :00:17.
left without water after a burst water main in Sussex. Gushing down. | :00:17. | :00:21.
I went round the corner and it was pouring into the close just | :00:21. | :00:26.
opposite. The family grieving for a life the Maxi could have been saved. | :00:26. | :00:30.
Preying on the vulnerable. Shocking figures show that people with | :00:30. | :00:35.
dementia are being swindled out of millions. I said to him, let me get | :00:35. | :00:42.
this right, you sold your car that was worth 3,000 to a man for 100, | :00:42. | :00:48.
and he said yes. And bouncing her way into a world title. We meet the | :00:48. | :00:58.

The clean-up operation in Horsham continues after a water main burst | :01:02. | :01:12.
:01:12. | :01:12. | ||
last night. Southern water says the leak at Leechpool Lane is now under | :01:12. | :01:15.
control but the incident left 1,000 homes without water and flooded | :01:16. | :01:17.
gardens and outbuildings. It's caused widespread disruption in the | :01:17. | :01:23.
area. Danielle Glavin is live in Horsham tonight. The damage are | :01:23. | :01:27.
still very clear to see. There is a big crater and the ground. Southern | :01:27. | :01:31.
Water has to replace a six metre section of pipe. They have been | :01:31. | :01:37.
working on this throughout the day and will be back tomorrow, as well. | :01:37. | :01:41.
1,000 homes were left without water, although it was restored at 2pm | :01:41. | :01:47.
this afternoon. People are clearing up, after homes, gardens and | :01:47. | :01:53.
carriages were flooded. It is going to take a good few days that -- to | :01:53. | :01:57.
fix this crater that opened up at 9:30pm last night. Last night, | :01:57. | :02:04.
Leechpool Lane was more like a river. The pipe burst and the | :02:04. | :02:08.
pressure caused the road to collapse. It was gushing down the | :02:08. | :02:13.
road. I went down the road and round the corner and it was pouring | :02:13. | :02:15.
into the close just opposite. Torrents of water coming down the | :02:15. | :02:19.
road. It was being pumped down the lane past her house, which was | :02:19. | :02:29.
:02:29. | :02:30. | ||
fortunate, and I make tea for the work men! Joan Lucas looks at the | :02:30. | :02:34.
bottom of the hill. Her garage and garden flooded. And the water came | :02:34. | :02:39.
up to her doorstep. To see all this water coming down into the garden, | :02:39. | :02:44.
realising that as it was on the other way, it was just stuck in the | :02:44. | :02:50.
garden and was coming back up, not quite into the bungalow, but then | :02:50. | :02:54.
we realised that the water was going through the garage, so why | :02:54. | :02:58.
open the back door of the garage, so we ended up like a little | :02:58. | :03:04.
island! It was less since at usual at a nearby school, but they took | :03:04. | :03:08.
care to get pupils inside safely. We wondered if we would be able to | :03:08. | :03:12.
be open, whether we would have access, whether there would be | :03:12. | :03:15.
water, and do what report have worked efficiently through the | :03:15. | :03:19.
night and kept me informed and early this morning, and the were | :03:19. | :03:24.
told we would definitely have water. Questions have been asked about the | :03:24. | :03:28.
response times of Southern Water. It took five hours to turn the | :03:28. | :03:32.
water off. The size of the whole, the length of pipe that we have had | :03:32. | :03:38.
to repair, about six metres, our crews have worked through the night, | :03:38. | :03:44.
so we have expedited repairs as soon as possible. In 43 days to | :03:44. | :03:48.
repair the pipe and returned as road to normal. -- et al take three | :03:48. | :03:58.

the programme. -- people are being warned. The family of Leanne | :04:51. | :04:54.
Turnbull is calling for more help for people with mental health | :04:54. | :04:56.
conditions after their sister's recent death. Leanne's body was | :04:56. | :04:59.
found in the countryside near Alton almost a month after she went | :04:59. | :05:02.
missing. At her inquest today the coroner heard how she'd suffered | :05:02. | :05:05.
from depression and had attempted to take her own life two months | :05:05. | :05:07.
previously. Roisin Gauson reports. For a 24-year-old Leanne Turnbull | :05:07. | :05:10.
went missing on SEP- 14. Her body was found one month later, on | :05:10. | :05:12.
farmland near Alton. Today, the North Hampshire coroner was unable | :05:12. | :05:14.
to pinpoint the exact cause of death. Leanne Turnbull had | :05:15. | :05:19.
attempted to take her own life using insulin describe for her boy | :05:19. | :05:23.
friend's son to stop when she went missing on 14 SEP-, her boyfriend | :05:23. | :05:26.
noticed that five or vials of insulin had also gone missing. When | :05:26. | :05:33.
her body was found, her rucksack was near by. It contained four | :05:33. | :05:37.
empty insulin containers. The coroner said he was almost certain | :05:37. | :05:41.
she had taken them herself and had died at the scene, but he had to be | :05:41. | :05:45.
sure beyond doubt that she did it and she intended to die. That | :05:45. | :05:50.
intention, he said, was not clear. He said it is likely but I cannot | :05:50. | :05:57.
be sure. Can I ask you to take one of these? Family members carried | :05:57. | :06:00.
out an extensive campaign searching for Leanne Turnbull, in the weeks | :06:00. | :06:05.
following her disappearance. Today they were in court to hear from her | :06:05. | :06:08.
professionals, the police, and those who have contact with her, | :06:08. | :06:14.
last. I feel that that situation with my sister may have been | :06:14. | :06:18.
prevented if there had been someone in the community she could confide | :06:18. | :06:23.
Moutside of her family and domestic arrangements. The coroner expressed | :06:23. | :06:33.
sympathy to the family and recorded an open verdict. Unemployment is | :06:33. | :06:37.
now at its highest level for 17 years. Here in the South the | :06:37. | :06:40.
picture isn't as gloomy as elsewhere in the country, but still | :06:40. | :06:45.
the number of people out of work is rising. In the South East, the | :06:45. | :06:49.
figure is up by 16,000 to 272,000 unemployed. In the South West, the | :06:49. | :06:58.
figure is up by 2,000 to 177,000 unemployed. We've been to one part | :06:58. | :07:01.
of the South which is particularly badly affected - the Isle of Wight. | :07:01. | :07:05.
Youth unemployment here is rising faster than anywhere in the region. | :07:05. | :07:13.
Chrissy Sturt has been to meet some of the island's young job seekers. | :07:13. | :07:23.
:07:23. | :07:24. | ||
Meet the NEETs. I am Peter, I am 24. This is a government label that | :07:24. | :07:29.
these young people have never even heard of, it stands for not in | :07:29. | :07:32.
education, employment or training. The lack of jobs makes them even | :07:32. | :07:37.
harder to help. This particular group has an added problem. Family | :07:37. | :07:42.
difficulties mean they cannot live at home. Step in a charity that | :07:42. | :07:45.
gives youngsters on the Isle of Wight a place to live and, | :07:46. | :07:49.
crucially, tries to gear them up for a life of work rather than | :07:49. | :07:55.
benefits. But it is not easy. You are trying to do this in the middle | :07:55. | :08:01.
of an economic downturn. Yes, the worst one ever for young people. | :08:01. | :08:04.
Most of the time you are sitting around doing nothing and it is | :08:04. | :08:09.
soul-destroying. Mainly cleaning jobs, really. There is nothing open | :08:09. | :08:16.
to young people at all. This is not a vague do-gooder approach. It is | :08:16. | :08:21.
highly targeted at specific. Help with CBEs, covering letters and | :08:21. | :08:26.
application forms, combined with volunteering and work experience, | :08:26. | :08:30.
it is making these young people employable for the first time. Do | :08:30. | :08:34.
you want the job? I want the job, yes, because I want to be able to | :08:34. | :08:43.
do well for myself and our own living. -- and earned a living. And | :08:43. | :08:47.
just, in general, try to do something with myself. The job | :08:47. | :08:51.
opportunities here are limited for young people so that is why we are | :08:51. | :08:55.
focused on this tour on to work project, looking at building | :08:55. | :09:00.
communication skills. That is where I was staying, right in year. | :09:00. | :09:04.
time last year it was different for Peter, who was living rough in | :09:04. | :09:12.
Newport. His sleeping bag is still where he left it. Now, after living | :09:12. | :09:17.
with a friend for a year, he has got hope, with football coaching | :09:17. | :09:21.
qualifications and a decent looking CBE. My future looks bright. It is | :09:21. | :09:27.
looking very good at the moment. In the space of six months it has been | :09:28. | :09:32.
very different. But I have had a lot of support. I want to give | :09:32. | :09:40.
something back to the community. what hope is there for those | :09:40. | :09:46.
searching for jobs in such difficult economic times? Earlier, | :09:46. | :09:49.
I spoke to Michael Moran, who's a job coach, about how people | :09:49. | :09:56.
applying for jobs can stand out from the crowd. We have got lots of | :09:56. | :10:00.
people chasing very few jobs. But employers tell me that finding good | :10:00. | :10:04.
people is exceptionally difficult. So, you do have to stand out from | :10:04. | :10:10.
the crowd. Certainly, the way you get introduced to an employer is | :10:10. | :10:14.
critical. Sending out several CDs without any connection with the | :10:14. | :10:24.
:10:24. | :10:25. | ||
company is wasting your time. -- CVs. What is the advice for people | :10:25. | :10:29.
sending out hundreds of applications and getting nowhere? | :10:30. | :10:33.
You have got to change the way you are making job applications. Most | :10:33. | :10:38.
people get jobs through the result of a networking introduction. It is | :10:38. | :10:43.
very important you find out who is the person with the power to hire | :10:43. | :10:48.
you, and find a networking connection, who can introduce you. | :10:48. | :10:52.
This method applies whether you want a job at Tesco, if you know | :10:52. | :10:58.
somebody working their reward take your CD to the HR department, as it | :10:58. | :11:01.
will for a bit -- for a senior executive job in the City. And the | :11:02. | :11:06.
importance of using social media sites and the Internet is more | :11:06. | :11:10.
important than it was a few years ago. It is critical. With things | :11:10. | :11:20.
:11:20. | :11:22. | ||
like Facebook and LinkedIn you should be able to identify someone | :11:22. | :11:26.
in the organisation that you have some connection with. How important | :11:26. | :11:32.
is it that, in the market place, people are pretty despondent. | :11:32. | :11:38.
Ford said, whatever you think, you are probably right. So, if you went | :11:38. | :11:41.
to the interview thinking I will be lucky to get this job, then you | :11:41. | :11:45.
will be lucky to get that job. Self-confidence is critical. That | :11:45. | :11:49.
is difficult when you have applied for loss of jobs. But the more you | :11:49. | :11:54.
practise, the luckier you get. If you hone your technique, you are | :11:54. | :11:58.
well prepared as a candidate and have positive psychology, self- | :11:58. | :12:08.
:12:08. | :12:13. | ||
belief and confidence, you will and that job. Still to come in this | :12:13. | :12:16.
evening's South Today, a warning of more lively weather to come this | :12:16. | :12:19.
week. Here's Reham Khan. From rain to snow, I will be back with the | :12:19. | :12:28.
weather information later in the Police are investigating after two | :12:28. | :12:31.
security guards were robbed outside a building society in Fareham last | :12:31. | :12:34.
night. Officers were called to Nationwide on West Street shortly | :12:34. | :12:37.
after 11:30pm. Detectives won't say how much money was stolen or if the | :12:37. | :12:40.
men were armed. They are keeping an open mind about whether last | :12:40. | :12:43.
night's incident is linked to a similar robbery in Chandler's Ford | :12:43. | :12:45.
last month. They'd been camped out for more | :12:45. | :12:48.
than a month, but today the Occupy Brighton site was cleared. The | :12:48. | :12:50.
tents in the city's Victoria Gardens were blown down in the | :12:50. | :12:53.
recent storms. Some demonstrators said they'd wanted to clean up | :12:53. | :12:56.
themselves, but staff from Brighton and Hove City Council did the job | :12:56. | :12:59.
this morning. Tonight, the leader of the council said if another camp | :12:59. | :13:03.
was set up in the city, it would seek to move it on. Mark Sanders | :13:03. | :13:06.
reports. The remnants of the camp were | :13:06. | :13:09.
cleared quickly. Those tents still standing and other debris were | :13:09. | :13:13.
dealt with by council workers. Protestors had been here in the | :13:13. | :13:17.
heart of Brighton since October, but time ran out for the camp. | :13:17. | :13:21.
Storms did their damage and there was a fire last night. A | :13:21. | :13:24.
firefighter was actually pushed to the ground while trying to deal | :13:24. | :13:34.
:13:34. | :13:43. | ||
with the blaze. The weather destroyed the infrastructure of the | :13:43. | :13:48.
camp. It became unmanageable. camp had grown to about thirty | :13:48. | :13:50.
tents. The Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, Caroline Lucas, visited | :13:50. | :13:53.
the site and spoke to protestors. But the two neighbouring | :13:53. | :13:58.
Conservative MPs condemned the occupation of Victoria Gardens. The | :13:58. | :14:02.
Green run city council had resisted calls for the police to move on the | :14:02. | :14:06.
camp. But now, because of the fire and the assault on a firefighter, | :14:06. | :14:09.
the green council leader says if another camp is set up on council- | :14:09. | :14:12.
owned land, the local authority would immediately seek possession | :14:12. | :14:22.
:14:22. | :14:22. | ||
of the site. It's believed people with dementia | :14:22. | :14:25.
in the south are being cheated out of millions of pounds because of | :14:25. | :14:28.
what the Alzheimer's Society describes as financial abuse. The | :14:28. | :14:30.
charity says those affected by dementia are vulnerable to cold | :14:30. | :14:36.
callers and scam mail. Their research suggests 15% of people | :14:36. | :14:43.
with the condition are victims. On average, each person loses 850. | :14:43. | :14:46.
For example in Hampshire, where there are just under 18,000 people | :14:46. | :14:56.
:14:56. | :14:58. | ||
with dementia, it's estimated more than 2 million has been lost. | :14:58. | :15:01.
Anita Avery never talked very much about money with her parents. When | :15:01. | :15:04.
first her father and then her mother was diagnosed with dementia, | :15:04. | :15:06.
she realised too late how financially vulnerable they'd | :15:06. | :15:16.
become. I went to the garage to check on my father's car. The car | :15:16. | :15:21.
was gone. I went to the house and the keys were gone. I asked him | :15:21. | :15:27.
where the car was and he said, I sold it to some bloke for 100. I | :15:27. | :15:31.
was shocked because the car was worth around 4,000. Anita's mother | :15:31. | :15:34.
was a member of a legitimate mail order book club, but as her | :15:34. | :15:38.
condition worsened she lost all track of what she was spending. | :15:38. | :15:41.
had been buying everything that came through the door and over a | :15:41. | :15:48.
period of time had probably spent just over 15,000. Alzheimer's | :15:48. | :15:50.
Society research suggests many people with dementia have trouble | :15:50. | :15:53.
managing their money, dealing with banks and picking up on the warning | :15:53. | :15:59.
signs of fraud. It's calling for extra support to be put in place. | :15:59. | :16:03.
We would like to see all banks committing it to the training of | :16:03. | :16:06.
their staff within branches and call centres so that they can spot | :16:06. | :16:11.
the signs of dementia and also so that they understand that families | :16:11. | :16:15.
often have legal rights to make decisions for people. Anita wishes | :16:15. | :16:18.
she had opened her eyes sooner to her parents' financial situation. | :16:18. | :16:20.
Now they've died, she's keen to encourage other families to look | :16:20. | :16:27.
for signs of vulnerability. Talk to your nearest and dearest and think | :16:27. | :16:31.
about things like lasting power of attorney. Be prepared in case the | :16:31. | :16:35.
worst ever does happen. Anita Avery ending that report by | :16:35. | :16:37.
Briony Leyland. Residents of Turbary Park Avenue in | :16:37. | :16:39.
Bournemouth say their road is a catastrophe waiting to happen. | :16:39. | :16:42.
Today, members of the Act Community Residents Association presented a | :16:42. | :16:44.
four hundred signature petition to Bournemouth Borough Council asking | :16:44. | :16:48.
for pedestrianised crossings along the road. They say that children | :16:48. | :16:58.
:16:58. | :17:02. | ||
and the elderly who live in the area are particularly at risk. | :17:02. | :17:05.
With heavy rain and gales sweeping the south this week, it might seem | :17:05. | :17:09.
an odd time to be talking about a water shortage. But that's exactly | :17:09. | :17:11.
what the Environment Agency is worried about. Rainfall this year | :17:11. | :17:15.
has been so low that unless we get higher rain than usual this winter, | :17:15. | :17:17.
there'll be droughts next year. Chris Coneybeer explains. | :17:17. | :17:22.
It might be hard to believe but the weather we've been having means to | :17:22. | :17:28.
up a bit short of water at the moment. This reservoir in West | :17:28. | :17:32.
Sussex has levels of water which has dropped a critical level. We | :17:32. | :17:37.
need lots of rain. In the past year, here in the South we've had half | :17:37. | :17:41.
the amount we hadn't the 12 months before. The Environment Agency is | :17:41. | :17:45.
becoming concerned. If we don't get sufficient rain in the next few | :17:45. | :17:50.
months, we will be in a situation where lots of water companies in | :17:50. | :17:59.
the spring at going to be applying for drought permits. We are | :17:59. | :18:03.
concerned about balancing the needs of people and the business and | :18:03. | :18:06.
wildlife to make it will fit together. If the drought comes, it | :18:07. | :18:11.
will impact a large area. Here in southern England it will be among | :18:12. | :18:17.
the worst affected. Efforts are under way even now to reduce water | :18:17. | :18:21.
usage in Berkshire. Thames Water is trying to encourage people to | :18:21. | :18:25.
protect one of the tributaries of the Thames. The we are hoping that | :18:25. | :18:29.
people in the local area will say, that is my river, I want to look | :18:29. | :18:37.

Salisbury City of Conference South are into the third round of the FA | :19:25. | :19:28.
Cup for the first time in their history. That's after a thrilling | :19:28. | :19:31.
win in a replay at Grimsby, who play one division higher than the | :19:31. | :19:34.
Whites. A goal from Salisbury's Dan Fitchett looked like it would take | :19:34. | :19:37.
them through in normal time. But Grimsby equalised and then went | :19:37. | :19:39.
ahead in extra time. Brian Dutton's close-range header brought | :19:39. | :19:45.
Salisbury level at 2-2. And when Fitchett was fouled seven minutes | :19:45. | :19:48.

for Sussex and Hampshire today, with two players extending their | :20:37. | :20:40.
contracts. Sussex captain Michael Yardy has committed his next three | :20:40. | :20:43.
years to the county. He's thanked Sussex for standing by him earlier | :20:43. | :20:45.
this year, during his battle with depression. Meanwhile, Hampshire | :20:45. | :20:48.
fast bowler David Balcombe has signed a three year extension at | :20:48. | :20:51.
the Rose Bowl. That's following a loan spell with Kent last season. | :20:51. | :20:53.
And staying with new contracts, London Irish scrum-half Darren | :20:53. | :20:56.
Allinson has signed a two year extension with the club. The 24- | :20:56. | :20:59.

now be at the Madejski Stadium until 2014. | :21:01. | :21:03.

gymnast Sapphire Dallard from Poole has bounced on to the world stage. | :21:09. | :21:13.
She's now a world champion in the double mini trampoline. Jo Kent has | :21:13. | :21:23.

been to find out more. It is a display of fitness, skill | :21:23. | :21:29.
and dedication. These moves are just a gentle warm-up. This is a | :21:29. | :21:36.
world champion action. Absolutely amazing. I cried when I found out I | :21:36. | :21:43.
won. I broke down in floods of tears and gave her a huge had. It | :21:43. | :21:47.
was unbelievable. You can't imagine your own sister being world | :21:47. | :21:55.

The double mini trampoline is a domestic discipline and a cross | :21:59. | :22:02.
between trampolining and tumbling. It is a very high standard of | :22:02. | :22:07.
competition. There are hundreds and hundreds of people doing the actual | :22:07. | :22:13.
sport. There were over 20 countries in the world championships. It was | :22:13. | :22:20.
highly competitive. These are some of the moves that landed her the | :22:20. | :22:24.
world title. At the moment, it is not unloaded Sport but that remains | :22:24. | :22:31.
their ultimate aim. Next year, I want to go to the European | :22:31. | :22:34.
Championships and win because I came second last year. My dream is | :22:34. | :22:41.
to get to the Olympics. I hope it has become an Olympic sport because | :22:41. | :22:45.
I love it so much. Trampolining is an Olympic sport so I could try and | :22:45. | :22:49.
get into the Olympics in trampolining as well. We first met | :22:49. | :22:53.
the siblings last year and things have intensified since then. 12 | :22:53. | :22:56.

Lucy and Kate MacGregor, along with Annie Lush, face the French boat in | :23:28. | :23:31.
the semi-finals of the match racing class. Bad news though for Iain | :23:31. | :23:35.
Percy and Andrew Simpson, who had to pull out of the Star Class as | :23:35. | :23:45.
:23:45. | :23:46. | ||
expected, after an injury to Percy. I hope that's not serious. Shall we | :23:46. | :23:53.
move on to the weather? I think we ought to. We've only just got over | :23:53. | :23:59.
the last lot of wind and rain and now you're mentioning snow. | :23:59. | :24:04.
It is very interesting in the next few days. Let's have a look at our | :24:04. | :24:13.

It is looking interesting for the next few days to come. Heavy | :24:34. | :24:40.
showers continued through the overnight period. Those blustery | :24:40. | :24:48.
showers focusing along the south coast. Further north, some wet snow | :24:48. | :24:51.
for the Cotswolds and we're looking at temperatures plummeting to two | :24:51. | :24:58.
degrees Celsius. I think we will have some brighter weather for a | :24:58. | :25:02.
while before the next lot of showers coming from the West by | :25:02. | :25:08.
mid-morning. A few sunny spells and it is a cold breezy day with | :25:08. | :25:16.
temperatures not very impressive. But a very intense area of low | :25:16. | :25:20.
pressure moves in from the south- west and the centre of the Lois | :25:20. | :25:26.
just along the south coast so it's going to bring us some very strong | :25:26. | :25:33.
winds and snow. There is going to be a lot of snow for some of us on | :25:33. | :25:40.
Thursday. This is how it's going to play out. Quite strong winds, | :25:40. | :25:46.
politically further south, and the worst case scenario is 10 | :25:46. | :25:50.
centimetres of snow for the higher ground and a couple of centimetres | :25:50. | :26:00.
:26:00. | :26:01. | ||
below levels. It is a very chilly start to Friday morning. The | :26:01. | :26:06.
feature is going to give us rain but then blustery showers and a | :26:06. | :26:10.
keen north-westerly wind giving us a very cold enter the week. On | :26:10. | :26:15.
Saturday, dry for many parts with some sunny spells and we are | :26:15. | :26:19.
looking at a few further wintery showers but I think the most | :26:19. | :26:26.
concerning thing is Friday's snow. Keep tuned to the local forecast on | :26:26. | :26:31.
Thursday into Friday because it still could change. A cold north- | :26:31. | :26:41.
:26:41. | :26:41. | ||
westerly wind with a risk of I like snow but when you are busy | :26:41. | :26:43.
and you are trying to get around and doing your Christmas shopping, | :26:43. | :26:50.
it gets in the way. A new feature starts tomorrow on | :26:50. | :26:56.
