Welcome to South Today. In tonight's programme:

:00:02.:00:05.

Living in fear of vandals. The family who have put up a cash

:00:05.:00:15.
:00:15.:00:16.

reward to end their terror. cannot live like this. I cannot

:00:16.:00:19.

take it. The UK's biggest raid on brothels.

:00:19.:00:25.

Now two more leaders of a sex trafficking ring are behind bars.

:00:25.:00:30.

Why cycling the South Downs is no longer as strenuous.

:00:30.:00:33.

And meet the group of musicians keeping the memory of Titanic's

:00:33.:00:43.
:00:43.:00:49.

A family say they are being driven out of their Hampshire home by a

:00:49.:00:55.

series of vandal attacks. Steven and Lisa Walker have suffered tens

:00:55.:00:58.

of thousands of pounds worth of damage to their Waterlooville home

:00:58.:01:01.

and to their cars over the past year. The couple say that, despite

:01:01.:01:05.

having CCTV footage of the vandals, no-one has been caught. They have

:01:05.:01:15.
:01:15.:01:15.

now decided to offer a cash reward for information.

:01:15.:01:19.

Steve and Lisa Walker worked for years to buy their dream home. In

:01:19.:01:22.

less than a year that dream has been shattered. Their house now

:01:22.:01:30.

bears the scars of an ongoing vendetta. We thought it might be a

:01:30.:01:37.

random attack at first. I do not think I have upset somebody. Until

:01:37.:01:45.

such time as they come forward and, like a man, for I cannot resolve

:01:45.:01:50.

the problem. A week last Friday, this happened. Two men climbed over

:01:50.:01:54.

their front gate, smashed up the cars and broke the front windows of

:01:54.:02:00.

the house. The intruders are thought to have made their getaway

:02:00.:02:04.

in a small dark hatchback car with a loud exhaust. It sped away down

:02:04.:02:06.

London Road, narrowly missing another vehicle as it pulled out of

:02:06.:02:10.

the bus lane. Police say the driver of that vehicle could prove to be a

:02:10.:02:18.

vital witness. We are extremely concerned about the fact that it is

:02:18.:02:20.

getting worse each time and we are keen to trace the people involved

:02:20.:02:26.

in this. It is the latest in a string of attacks on their property.

:02:26.:02:28.

Car windows have been smashed, paint has been thrown at their

:02:28.:02:33.

house, and vehicles have been damaged by acid. We cannot live

:02:33.:02:37.

like this are no more. We are in fear all the time now. I cannot

:02:37.:02:43.

live like this. I cannot take it no more.

:02:43.:02:46.

A reward of 1,000 is available for any information which leads to a

:02:46.:02:48.

conviction. Police hope it will encourage someone to come forward

:02:48.:02:58.

to help bring the offenders to justice.

:02:58.:03:01.

A man and woman who helped run brothels across Berkshire and as

:03:01.:03:04.

far as Cambridge have both been jailed at Reading Crown Court today.

:03:04.:03:08.

Manjit Singh from Knowl Hill and Ai Ju Su were part of what the judge

:03:08.:03:10.

described as a highly organised criminal enterprise that netted the

:03:10.:03:13.

gang hundreds of thousands of pounds. Our reporter was in court.

:03:13.:03:23.
:03:23.:03:29.

This was a very extensive operation. Yasser. It was -- yes, it wise. It

:03:29.:03:33.

was the biggest ever sex trafficking operation. It involved

:03:33.:03:40.

a number of forces. They targeted places -- places like a Wokingham.

:03:40.:03:44.

Inside they found girls that have been brought in from countries are

:03:44.:03:49.

like Thailand and China. The man behind this was jailed for three

:03:49.:03:54.

and a half years just last month. The court heard this had been a

:03:54.:03:59.

very sophisticated operation. Acquired properties were staffed

:03:59.:04:07.

with girls and were then advertised through the internet. Manjit Singh

:04:07.:04:13.

and Au Ju Su had pivotal roles. She was described as being the --

:04:13.:04:17.

Manjit Singh was described as being the Controller as the operation.

:04:17.:04:22.

She told the man what was on offer and then directed them to the

:04:22.:04:32.
:04:32.:04:33.

nearest brothel. She was jailed for some 30 months. Her husband already

:04:33.:04:36.

had a community sentence at the time that he was running this

:04:36.:04:40.

particular chain. He was described as someone who was moving up the

:04:40.:04:45.

hierarchy and was running a series of brothels and was jailed for some

:04:45.:04:49.

27 months for that particular crime and nine months for the earlier

:04:49.:04:54.

offence. Surrey County Council's decision to

:04:55.:04:57.

hand ten libraries over to community groups and volunteers has

:04:57.:05:00.

been ruled unlawful by the High Court. Campaigners opposed the move

:05:00.:05:03.

as they said vulnerable users would lose out if the plan went ahead. Mr

:05:03.:05:06.

Justice Wilkie said the council's decision making was flawed as

:05:06.:05:15.

training for volunteers was not fully discussed.

:05:15.:05:22.

This man helped raised money for the review. -- helped raise money.

:05:22.:05:28.

He hopes that the ruling will force a rethink at the council. Many

:05:28.:05:32.

people have a raised very serious concerns and they have all been

:05:32.:05:38.

dismissed. They should not do that. This is not just about libraries.

:05:38.:05:42.

Any time significant changes are going to happen in public services,

:05:43.:05:47.

they need to be assessed properly and they need to consult people

:05:47.:05:55.

properly. The council needs to cut the library budget. Handing over 10

:05:55.:06:00.

libraries to community groups would have helped. But the judge

:06:00.:06:03.

criticised the decision making, saying that they had not assessed

:06:03.:06:06.

what training the volunteers would need to provide an accessible

:06:06.:06:11.

service. Despite the ruling, the council was putting out a positive

:06:11.:06:18.

message. The judge has not said we did not consult properly. It is all

:06:18.:06:21.

about public information and training with regards to that. We

:06:21.:06:25.

do believe we have consulted properly. We asked people what they

:06:25.:06:28.

thought and we have got more support on this than we have got

:06:28.:06:32.

those who are against. The judge will make a further ruling on the

:06:32.:06:37.

issue next month. Other councils who are cutting back their

:06:37.:06:42.

libraries will be watching closely, but Surrey is not giving up. The

:06:42.:06:45.

council says it is committed to introducing community libraries

:06:45.:06:50.

across Surrey and it says it will address the problems and next month

:06:50.:06:55.

they will ask the judge if the scheme can go ahead.

:06:56.:06:58.

A runner who collapsed and died after finishing the Reading Half

:06:58.:07:01.

Marathon on Sunday suffered a heart attack, a coroner has reported. Ged

:07:01.:07:04.

Clarke, who was 39 and from Reading, collapsed after finishing the 13.1

:07:04.:07:07.

mile course. Coroner Peter Bedford said Mr Clarke's heart attack was

:07:07.:07:10.

caused by a pre-existing heart condition. He added there was no

:07:10.:07:12.

link to dehydration. The keen runner ran a popular Twitter

:07:12.:07:21.

campaign encouraging people to exercise at lunch times.

:07:21.:07:24.

Poole Council have confirmed that they are hopeful that the Twin

:07:24.:07:27.

Sails Bridge will open later this week. The 37 million structure was

:07:27.:07:31.

due to open to traffic earlier this month but was delayed due to cracks

:07:31.:07:36.

in the original surface. Weymouth Borough Council has voted

:07:37.:07:41.

to go ahead with major repair work to the town's ferry berth. In

:07:41.:07:44.

February Condor Ferries, which sails to the Channel Islands, had

:07:44.:07:47.

to move services to Poole after structural changes were detected at

:07:47.:07:50.

Weymouth Quay. The rebuilding work is likely to cost in the region of

:07:50.:07:57.

2 million. The ferry service is worth more than 7.7 million to the

:07:57.:08:00.

local economy. It supports around 232 jobs. The aim is for work to be

:08:00.:08:09.

complete by next March. The life has gone out of the ferry

:08:09.:08:14.

port. It is two nonsense cracks appeared in the harbour structure

:08:14.:08:19.

and Condor Ferries were forced to move their operations to pool. It

:08:19.:08:25.

is the council's parsed de -- it is the castle's job to fix it. To date

:08:25.:08:32.

major repairs were carried out. brings a lot to the local economy

:08:32.:08:36.

and that for a -- is why we are committed to working closely with

:08:36.:08:41.

Condor Ferries to make sure that we have a solution in place within the

:08:41.:08:45.

timetable that we sat. But you cannot guarantee it will be ready

:08:45.:08:50.

in time? You can never guarantee anything when you are talking about

:08:50.:08:54.

engineering works. Condor Ferries have told the council they want to

:08:54.:09:00.

return, but are concerned about the poor facilities at the port. The

:09:00.:09:06.

council are looking at external funding, such as external grants.

:09:06.:09:12.

Local businesses say it is vital that Condor Ferries returned.

:09:12.:09:17.

was on the council I would be doing whatever I could to keep them. We

:09:17.:09:23.

need our council to go out there, lobby and work to get them back for

:09:23.:09:27.

the better facilities than they have got at the moment. Bizmac are

:09:27.:09:31.

said today that they continue to liaise -- Condor Ferries are saying

:09:31.:09:36.

today that they will continue to liaise with the poor. No one knows

:09:36.:09:40.

when Condor Ferries will report to Weymouth. The departure has left a

:09:40.:09:44.

big hole in the local economy. As one councillor put it today, we

:09:44.:09:51.

need to crack on with the solution. Plans to protect and improve

:09:51.:09:54.

Poole's beaches have gone on show. Poole Borough Council want to

:09:54.:09:56.

improve facilities from Sandbanks to Branksome Dene Chine whilst

:09:56.:09:58.

conserving the natural environment. People are being invited to view

:09:58.:10:01.

the plans today at Upton Country Park.

:10:01.:10:06.

Still to come in this evening's South Today:

:10:06.:10:12.

Would you take a dip in the sea at Hampshire's Stokes Bay? I am an

:10:12.:10:16.

endurance swimmer and later I will be telling you about the challenge

:10:16.:10:20.

as I will be taking this year and introducing due to my swim mate.

:10:20.:10:29.

Wait for me! -- introducing you to my swimming mates.

:10:30.:10:32.

A Sussex artist has beaten off competition from hundreds of others

:10:32.:10:39.

to win a commission of Olympic proportions. As part of the build

:10:39.:10:42.

up to the London games, Pascal Anson from Brighton was chosen to

:10:42.:10:45.

design a new livery for a fleet of British Airways planes. From

:10:45.:10:53.

tomorrow they will be in operation around Europe.

:10:53.:10:59.

Feast your eyes are on this a new aircraft design, celebrating the

:10:59.:11:05.

2012 Olympic Games. The winning designer is a Pascal Anson, who was

:11:05.:11:14.

influenced by Tracey an end. We had our ups and downs, I can assure you.

:11:14.:11:20.

It is because we had to get it right. It took 950 man hours to

:11:20.:11:27.

paint this their bus. The goal was not to decorate, but to transform.

:11:27.:11:32.

I take a bus from London to Brighton. A plane flew over one day

:11:32.:11:37.

when I was near Gatwick and then bird flew over and they appeared to

:11:38.:11:42.

be the same size even though one was I have got further away. That

:11:42.:11:46.

is something that has been in my mind for a while and I wanted to

:11:46.:11:52.

translate it into this idea. idea will be -- the design will be

:11:52.:11:58.

able emblazoned on planes that will fly World Wide. You have to admit

:11:58.:12:03.

that it is a rather subtle. Is it too subtle, perhaps? What is wrong

:12:03.:12:07.

were being understated? Why has everything got to be over the top?

:12:07.:12:11.

You can see that it is different and it has retained the identity of

:12:11.:12:17.

British Airways. It is not just the plane taking off, but Pascal

:12:17.:12:24.

Anson's career as well. Now, we may have seen the best of

:12:24.:12:28.

it for now at least, but the recent good weather has tempted many of us

:12:28.:12:31.

to get out of the house and enjoy the great outdoors. Unfortunately

:12:31.:12:35.

for some, the mind may be willing, but the body? Well, that can be a

:12:35.:12:38.

different matter. But now a new initiative being trialled in the

:12:38.:12:41.

South Downs National Park could bring a fresh lease of life to the

:12:41.:12:51.
:12:51.:12:52.

young at heart. A lovely day for a cycle in the

:12:53.:12:57.

South Downs, but on closer inspection, this is no ordinary

:12:57.:13:07.
:13:07.:13:12.

It is an electric bike aimed at bringing the world of two wheels to

:13:12.:13:17.

a wider audience. It does not matter how many it is or whether

:13:17.:13:22.

you are unfit for her how old you are. Practically anyone can have a

:13:22.:13:26.

goal -- can have a go. We have grannies that have been able to go

:13:26.:13:31.

cycling for the first time with their grandchildren. The South

:13:31.:13:34.

Downs National Park is home to the first electric bike that work for

:13:34.:13:40.

the southeast of England. It has four points stretching to Midhurst.

:13:40.:13:46.

It is a pilot scheme in the Lake District. I know other facilities

:13:46.:13:53.

just outside the park are looking at this. This is promoting

:13:53.:13:56.

sustainable transport and recreational tourism. What we are

:13:56.:14:02.

trying to do is reduce visitor traffic by card to the South Downs.

:14:02.:14:07.

We -- by automobile. We put the spots in rural locations where

:14:07.:14:12.

people can get out and enjoy the countryside. And now I think it is

:14:12.:14:19.

time to recharge. It is hoped that more venues will join the network,

:14:19.:14:23.

ASDA -- either as higher points are charging spot. It will give people

:14:24.:14:30.

a chance to stop and recharge their batteries.

:14:30.:14:40.
:14:40.:14:46.

Look at the Athletic reporters we have! Let's go on to sport now.

:14:46.:14:51.

Summer is the classic game for the summer. Cricket season is almost

:14:51.:15:01.
:15:01.:15:07.

The Chairman of Hampshire cricket spoke passionately last night about

:15:07.:15:12.

the financial challenges ahead for the club. Rod Bransgrove was

:15:12.:15:16.

addressing BBC Radio Solent's cricket forum at the Rose Bowl.

:15:16.:15:19.

Hampshire have cut their budgets going into their new season in

:15:19.:15:22.

Division Two of the championship. The county are close to finalising

:15:22.:15:29.

a deal which will see a new hotel built at the Ageas Bowl. We have

:15:29.:15:39.
:15:39.:15:40.

not been properly -- profitable up till now. To move forward to the

:15:40.:15:43.

next stage meant quite a significant be investment in the

:15:43.:15:48.

business. This business has to operate on a positive level and has

:15:48.:15:54.

to be profitable. Surrey and Sussex start the season on Thursday.

:15:54.:15:57.

Time to catch up with one of football's top professionals now.

:15:57.:16:00.

Jason Roberts's achievements in the sport go far beyond the pitch. His

:16:00.:16:03.

work for charity saw him awarded with an MBE in 2010. This week he

:16:03.:16:06.

has visited one of Reading's disabled soccer schools, run by the

:16:06.:16:09.

club's community programme, and he's been setting his sights on a

:16:09.:16:18.

return to the Premier League. Did you score any goals today? What

:16:18.:16:23.

a perfect day! Footballers are required to be ambassadors for

:16:23.:16:27.

their game and few do it better than Jason Roberts. He is visiting

:16:27.:16:31.

a school near Reading. It is a school for children with specialist

:16:31.:16:36.

educational needs. And Reading embrace it as part of their

:16:36.:16:41.

community programme. Lots of people here get the opportunities that

:16:41.:16:46.

they may not get other places. They have a qualified coach and get to

:16:46.:16:51.

see professional football at the end of the day. But the question is,

:16:51.:16:57.

can the team make the Premier League? I think so! Roberts has

:16:57.:17:01.

certainly made an impact since arriving from Blackburn in January.

:17:01.:17:05.

There was no case of me coming to Reading to have an easy life were

:17:05.:17:12.

to think that I wanted to be a championship player. You have to

:17:12.:17:14.

respect the lead and play in it before it -- because you want to

:17:14.:17:19.

get to the next week. He is a really good and he does some names

:17:19.:17:27.

like kicking or something. -- he does some moves. I would like to

:17:27.:17:31.

take a lot of credit but the credit has to go to the manager and the

:17:31.:17:36.

team. I am enjoying the football, there is no doubt about it. When

:17:36.:17:40.

you go into a team that is attacking it is an easy job. I am

:17:40.:17:46.

34 now. He is not finished yet. Roberts has an eye on the Premier

:17:46.:17:50.

League, and it could be sooner rather than later. And you can hear

:17:50.:17:58.

more from Jason after he plays pipes in the -- after he plays and

:17:58.:18:01.

the afternoon. That will be on Radio 5 Live.

:18:01.:18:04.

Britain's top two Formula One drivers will be at the Goodwood

:18:04.:18:07.

Festival of Speed this year. Lewis Hamilton returns to the Sussex

:18:07.:18:10.

circuit along with Jenson Button both racing McLarens. They are one

:18:10.:18:13.

of seven formula one teams who will be at the festival at the end of

:18:13.:18:16.

June. World Champion Sebastian Vetell from Red Bull is due to be

:18:17.:18:18.

there as well. Children in Hampshire have been

:18:18.:18:21.

taught to play new sports by Paralympic hopefuls. School

:18:21.:18:23.

children met several Paralympians at an event in Holbury near Fawley.

:18:23.:18:27.

They were taught to play Boccia and Goalball. It's one of 12 similar

:18:27.:18:29.

events taking part across the county ahead of the 2012 Paralympic

:18:30.:18:36.

Games. For then it will be great because they will pick up sports

:18:36.:18:40.

they did not know they could do were that they were good at and

:18:40.:18:47.

they might make new friends. If it helps in their lives in any way

:18:47.:18:52.

than it is great. He is a great athlete, a really good.

:18:52.:18:55.

David Walliams has set the pace in endurance swimming, but Hampshire's

:18:55.:18:58.

Anna Wardley can match him stroke for stroke. She has already swum

:18:58.:19:02.

the channel and broken two metres of ice to take part in ice swimming

:19:02.:19:05.

competition. Rather her than me! Yet she only took up the long

:19:05.:19:07.

distance sport four years ago, having been a breaststroke swimmer

:19:07.:19:10.

doing lengths in the swimming pool. Now she is taking on her biggest

:19:10.:19:14.

challenge yet. I have been to meet her on the beach in Gosport where

:19:14.:19:24.
:19:24.:19:43.

It is she the's war fat, which is We filmed her two years ago,

:19:43.:19:46.

preparing for the World Ice swimming championships in Russia.

:19:46.:19:52.

It might be warmer now, but looks can be deceptive in Gosport. When

:19:52.:19:57.

it gets to this time of year, most people are considering dipping a

:19:57.:20:03.

toe in the water. It feels like it is getting warm up to me. It is

:20:03.:20:09.

about nine degrees. I have not paper checked -- I have not checked

:20:10.:20:15.

it recently. Her next big challenge is to swim around five different

:20:15.:20:21.

islands. 60 miles around the Isle of Wight. It will take me in the

:20:21.:20:26.

region of 30 hours. That is a huge undertaking to prepare for,

:20:26.:20:36.
:20:36.:20:45.

I am ready! Are you coming or what! I hate cold water. I do not even

:20:45.:20:50.

turn the taps cold in the shower. With a bit at gentle encouragement,

:20:50.:21:00.
:21:00.:21:05.

actually I think she is pushing me, I have gone numb. I cannot feel

:21:05.:21:12.

anything! Well, that was not so bad. I did it. But for an hour, the huge

:21:12.:21:19.

challenges still ahead of her. How far it did you say it was? About

:21:19.:21:29.
:21:29.:21:30.

two and a half miles? Let's do it. I am just getting over that.

:21:30.:21:40.
:21:40.:21:45.

wonder you are called! You even had socks on! I had boots on. I have

:21:45.:21:50.

never been so cold. And good luck to her. She deserves all of the

:21:50.:21:56.

support she can get. She could set a world record, which is

:21:56.:22:00.

extraordinary. It is kicking off in May and goes all the way to October.

:22:00.:22:05.

She is a brave girl. It was nine degrees. I would like to see you

:22:05.:22:15.
:22:15.:22:15.

get in there. It is funny that you did that peace! -- of it is funny

Titanic's crew alive in song. White Star Line-up tells the story of the

ill-fated liner from the perspective of those who made the

ultimate sacrifice and those who were left behind. More than 500

could have been written just after Titanic sank. But White Star Line-

Henry and Barry Wake, in Northam in Southampton, close to the now

devastated. The story of the crew and their sacrifice has really been,

to a certain extent, superseded by the Hollywood movies telling the

story of the rich and famous. you imagine what they felt? There

is no welfare state or benefits. It is destitution. Besides the loss of

Members of the group have paid from their own pockets to record a CD.

They break even now but the greatest reward is the reaction

from their audience. This woman came up to me afterwards and she

had lost a grandfather on the ship. She wanted to say how much she

enjoyed the show. You think, I have rarely connected to someone and it

Tom will tell you about one of the heroes of the disaster. This man,

Sir Arthur Rostron, was the captain of the Carpathia. His quick
