Hello, I'm Sally Taylor and welcome to South Today. The main stories: A | :00:07. | :00:12.

dies as a car tries to cross fast moving ward of. | :00:15. | :00:20.
The water was very fast-flowing. At the point where the car was | :00:20. | :00:25.

Seven years in jail for the driver who drove his tanker into his | :00:28. | :00:35.
estranged wife's home. A Premier League pairing - double | :00:35. | :00:38.

And the first Olympic record created by a 2000 school children. | :00:43. | :00:48.

A man has died after the car he was travelling in became completely | :01:03. | :01:07.
submerged as it drove across a Ford on a road on the Hampshire- | :01:07. | :01:12.
Berkshire border. Fire crews have described how they eat try to get | :01:12. | :01:16.
into the vehicle after it was washed downstream at Compton Wood | :01:16. | :01:21.
near Newbury. A woman managed to escape from the trap car. Let's | :01:21. | :01:29.
join Bennett, who is at the scene. I am in the shallows on Thornford | :01:29. | :01:34.
Road, the Ford at the bottom of that country road. Just metres away | :01:34. | :01:38.
from me, you can see a depth gauge whether water is 3 ft deep. Just | :01:38. | :01:41.
beyond that, you can see the powerful current of the flood | :01:41. | :01:46.
waters. When we arrived here at lunchtime, the depth gauge was | :01:46. | :01:50.
above four feet. When the fire service were here, trying to effect | :01:50. | :01:56.
their rescue, that sign was can it be submerged. A Hampshire Fire | :01:57. | :02:01.
fighter in a dry suit made his way onto the vehicle. It was secured | :02:02. | :02:06.
and he was then able to break the windows to the car and retrieve the | :02:06. | :02:11.
bodies of - unfortunately - of the bodies of the Mail and the dog who | :02:11. | :02:17.
were trapped inside the vehicle. -- of the man. | :02:17. | :02:23.
And man and wife aged 52 and 54 drove their Toyota car into the | :02:23. | :02:27.
area at about 9:15am. The fire service attempted to rescue them | :02:27. | :02:32.
but the car had been swept away about 200 metres downstream. The | :02:32. | :02:37.
woman managed to get out but the man tragically did not, despite the | :02:37. | :02:41.
best efforts of the fire service, and neither did the family dog, who | :02:41. | :02:47.
also died in the accident. One man who has rescued more than 30 cars | :02:47. | :02:52.
from other Ford here is a sign in, who is a local. A tragic event by | :02:52. | :02:58.
one you think was going to happen. A I am very sorry to say that the | :02:58. | :03:02.
signs are here. The road closed signs are up and this has been | :03:02. | :03:08.
going to happen for many years. I was petrified that it would happen. | :03:08. | :03:10.
I saw the emergency service vehicles coming down this morning. | :03:10. | :03:18.
I did not know what to think. I came down and I knew immediately. | :03:18. | :03:21.
Thank you. Let's talk to a representative of Hampshire Fire | :03:21. | :03:25.
and rescue. You have a very important message. My condolences | :03:25. | :03:30.
to the family of the gentleman that were killed today. We are very | :03:30. | :03:34.
clear on the advice we would like to offer. Do not enter has fallen | :03:34. | :03:39.
Fords and rivers. Water as low as the door can sweep your car away | :03:39. | :03:45.
and that is very dangerous. In the sunset and as the revolt -- river | :03:45. | :03:48.
levels drop, it could be said to look picturesque but do not be | :03:48. | :03:52.
fooled about the dangers of a flood water. | :03:52. | :03:58.
In Dorset last night, an elderly couple were rescued after a -- | :03:58. | :04:02.
their car plunged off a bridge into a swollen river. It ended up upside | :04:02. | :04:05.
down in the river at West Stafford, near Dorchester. | :04:05. | :04:09.
It was a 9pm last night that a small hatchback crashed through the | :04:09. | :04:13.
wall of this bridge at West Stafford and tumbled 10 feet into | :04:13. | :04:19.
the water below. Inside the car, a 78-year-old man and a 77-year-old | :04:19. | :04:28.
woman. The couple, who ended up upside down, were lucky that Derek | :04:28. | :04:32.
Bateman heard the crash and came to help. They were upside down in the | :04:32. | :04:39.
water. The lady was up to her neck in water and she was cradling her | :04:39. | :04:45.
husband's head. It must have been horrible. Imagine being in the dark | :04:45. | :04:49.
amber freezing cold. You are shocked and I think they thought | :04:49. | :04:54.
they were going to drown. I told them the water would not get the | :04:54. | :04:57.
best of them and they relaxed. crews and paramedics got a couple | :04:57. | :05:01.
out of the car, who were suffering from the extreme effects of the | :05:02. | :05:06.
cold and taken to hospital. They are both still in hospital. | :05:06. | :05:10.
Miraculously, they have survived this horrific crash. Meanwhile, | :05:10. | :05:14.
Derek Bateman says he is just pleased he was at home at the time | :05:14. | :05:20.
and was able to offer immediate assistance. | :05:20. | :05:24.
A man who tried to use a petrol tanker as an enormous bomb to blow | :05:24. | :05:28.
up the home of his estranged wife has been jailed for seven years. | :05:28. | :05:33.
After running the tanker, laden with fuel, into the bungalow at | :05:33. | :05:37.
Wool in Dorset, Hugh Billington started fires in the property. A | :05:37. | :05:41.
passing motorist who reversed the tanker to safety has been praised | :05:41. | :05:45.
for his actions. According to Hugh Billington, early | :05:45. | :05:49.
this year something snapped. His marriage had broken down, he had | :05:49. | :05:53.
left home and was under a court order not to return. But he did - | :05:53. | :05:58.
in a dramatic act of revenge. Early on 20th January, he drove a tanker | :05:58. | :06:03.
laden with kerosene into the front of the family home. His estranged | :06:03. | :06:07.
wife ran out the back unhurt. He then went through the house setting | :06:07. | :06:12.
fires, before running away. There was an extraordinary act of bravery | :06:12. | :06:16.
here that morning. A passing motorist saw the tanker buried in | :06:16. | :06:20.
the house, saw that it was leaking fuel and saw that there was a fire | :06:20. | :06:24.
underneath it. He leapt into the cab and reversed the tanker out | :06:24. | :06:29.
into the road, away from the flames. Bad motorist was Darren Fletcher, | :06:29. | :06:33.
who had to stop his daughter of that school. The judge praised his | :06:33. | :06:40.
bravery. -- of that motorists. is close to the school. My children | :06:40. | :06:44.
were there and many more. Not only them but the residents of the | :06:44. | :06:48.
street. I know it is dangerous and looking back on it I think I | :06:48. | :06:52.
probably should not have done it but I did. Today, the court heard | :06:52. | :06:56.
that Hugh Billington intended to kill himself in a crash. He pleaded | :06:57. | :07:01.
guilty to four charges, including reckless arson. It is an extreme | :07:01. | :07:05.
example of domestic violence and one that we do not often see. | :07:05. | :07:09.
Clearly, Hugh Billington on this particular day committed a very | :07:09. | :07:14.
serious offence against his wife. The effect upon her have been | :07:14. | :07:18.
catastrophic. She has lost everything, including her marriage, | :07:18. | :07:23.
her house and her belongings. court was told that Hugh Billington | :07:23. | :07:27.
served 25 years in the Army as a musician and left with an exemplary | :07:27. | :07:31.
record. But the judge said his actions on this occasion were | :07:31. | :07:35.
wickedly irresponsible, that people were out and about - including | :07:35. | :07:40.
children - and the tanker could have become an enormous bomb. He | :07:40. | :07:45.
sentenced Hugh Billington to seven years in prison. | :07:45. | :07:50.
A number of current and former Brighton and Hove Albion | :07:50. | :07:52.
footballers are to appear in court in the City next week, after being | :07:52. | :07:59.
charged with sexual offences. Mark Sanders is in hour of Brighton | :07:59. | :08:02.
studio. Four players have been charged in | :08:02. | :08:06.
relation to an alleged sex attack. Three of them are current serving | :08:06. | :08:12.
players with Brighton and Hove Albion. They are George Barker, 20, | :08:12. | :08:18.
Lewis Dunk, 20, and Anton Rodgers, who is 19. The 4th man to face | :08:18. | :08:23.
charges is Steve Cook, who used to play for Albion but is now with | :08:23. | :08:27.
Bournemouth. All of the men are charged with sexually assaulting a | :08:27. | :08:33.
female and also with voyeurism. It relates to an alleged incident in | :08:33. | :08:38.
Brighton in last July. All four players are currently on bail. | :08:38. | :08:42.
Their first court appearances before Brighton magistrates on 11th | :08:42. | :08:47.
May. When police started making arrests in relation to this inquiry | :08:47. | :08:52.
back in January, in total six players were detained, so no action | :08:52. | :09:00.
being taken against two players. Brighton and Hove Albion are not | :09:00. | :09:03.
making any comment to light in relation to this case. | :09:03. | :09:09.
Thank you. -- tonight. There are elections on Thursday as | :09:09. | :09:14.
17 councils go to the polls. While the May vote is often a measure of | :09:14. | :09:17.
the popularity of the national government, local issues can be | :09:17. | :09:22.
decisive. In Rushmoor, which covers Aldershot and Farnborough, all the | :09:22. | :09:25.
seats are up to grabs -- up for grabs. | :09:25. | :09:31.
It was the downturn in construction that Bragg -- dragged Britain back | :09:31. | :09:35.
into recession this month so there should be a welcome sight. This | :09:35. | :09:40.
development is supposed to revitalise Aldershot. The local | :09:40. | :09:44.
Tories are pinning their hopes of what is going on here. National | :09:44. | :09:49.
factors are OK but at the end of the day, the people who pay their | :09:49. | :09:52.
council tax to the borough council want to know what they are getting. | :09:52. | :09:55.
There are not many councils in the country who can claim that their | :09:55. | :09:58.
shopping centres are being revitalised at a moment. Most are | :09:58. | :10:03.
shutting down. This is traditional Tory territory. But Conservatives | :10:03. | :10:07.
have been in control here for all but two years of the Council's 40 | :10:07. | :10:13.
year history. Even then it took an alliance of Liberal Democrats and | :10:13. | :10:18.
Labour to wrestle control from the Conservatives. Lib Dems in Russia | :10:18. | :10:25.
Paul now find their colleagues backing the Tories. -- in Rushmoor. | :10:25. | :10:28.
Blue badge holders are being enlisted to help them show that | :10:28. | :10:36.
they still have a separate identity here. Although the national picture | :10:36. | :10:40.
is that they will not vote for us in a general election, but they | :10:40. | :10:46.
will vote for our known at local candidates. You could have gained a | :10:46. | :10:50.
foothold three Tory elections -- Tory concessions. But they are | :10:50. | :10:54.
gambling as their status as political outsiders to stop them | :10:54. | :11:04.
:11:04. | :11:05. | ||
being uprooted. -- UKIP. We are in a stronger position now than we are | :11:05. | :11:09.
ever likely to be. This poll has been dominated by local issues but | :11:09. | :11:15.
one local issue for which Rushmoor is known nationally, the Gurkhas, | :11:15. | :11:20.
has turned out to be read electoral dog that did not bark. The growth | :11:20. | :11:25.
of the community is not an issue -- is an issue but not the first one | :11:25. | :11:28.
people will ask about. I am pleased to say there has been cross-party | :11:29. | :11:33.
support to try to achieve the extra funding from government. The | :11:33. | :11:38.
problem for Rushmoor is managing that issue over the next 10 years. | :11:38. | :11:43.
Aldershot gets its new town-centre late this year. The results of the | :11:43. | :11:46.
council election should be known early on Friday. | :11:46. | :11:51.
Above the list of the candidates for the location -- the Rushmoor | :11:51. | :11:56.
elections is on the BBC website. Tomorrow we look at the election | :11:56. | :11:59.
battleground in Southampton. A crash at Goodwood Motor Circuit | :11:59. | :12:02.
in which the 37-year-old racing driver died is being investigated | :12:02. | :12:07.
by police. Sandra Harrison-Moore, a doctor from Milton Keynes, is | :12:07. | :12:13.
thought to have lost control of the car up a last bend. | :12:13. | :12:16.
A 150 million project to improve the port of Southampton has been | :12:16. | :12:19.
approved. The Marine Management Association has given the go-ahead | :12:19. | :12:24.
for dredging and improve them work. It should create 200 jobs and | :12:24. | :12:30.
safeguard 1,200. Two berth book that will be combined to create the | :12:30. | :12:33.
next generation of large container vessels, which it is said will | :12:33. | :12:38.
ensure it remains competitive. Still to come: We have all the | :12:38. | :12:42.
weather details, plus a bit of silverware in the studio. More on | :12:42. | :12:47.
that later. Join me to find out whether this | :12:47. | :12:53.
school in Gosport will break a world record. | :12:53. | :12:57.
The prosecution has dropped some of the charges against a group accused | :12:57. | :13:01.
of illegal fox-hunting in West Sussex. Four members of the Crawley | :13:01. | :13:06.
and Horsham Hunt on trial, accused of breaking the hunting ban. They | :13:06. | :13:10.
deny the alleged offences. This morning, the prosecution withdrew | :13:10. | :13:14.
four of the 11 charges in the case. The hearing continues. | :13:15. | :13:19.
Police are continuing to search for a 96-year-old Brighton woman. | :13:19. | :13:23.
Nellie Herriott, who has Alzheimer's, was last seen leaving | :13:23. | :13:28.
a BhS store in the City and on a bus last Monday. She was wearing a | :13:28. | :13:31.
blue coat and a black cap. Sussex Police is asking anyone who may | :13:31. | :13:36.
have seen her to contact them. The campaign to secure medals for | :13:36. | :13:39.
veterans who braved the Arctic convoys during World War II has | :13:39. | :13:43.

It will assess the rules and principles governing the award of | :13:46. | :13:51.

How you feeling quit Mark we had a very good season. We are very happy | :15:02. | :15:10.
to bring back as Southampton. of you when done to the bottom with | :15:10. | :15:18.
Southampton, when the club had financial crisis. Yes, to come from | :15:18. | :15:24.
how we were, such a short time ago, to be promoted to the Premier | :15:24. | :15:29.
League is fantastic. It was a fantastic day, and to be part of | :15:29. | :15:35.
the season has been very special. He we are in the tunnel. You needed | :15:35. | :15:43.
a win, you needed to be sure. That early save as well. We would | :15:43. | :15:50.
possibly nervous. You could sense there was apprehension. We knew | :15:50. | :15:55.
what was at stake. It was just literally getting that first goal, | :15:55. | :16:01.
and was back in, there was never going to be any other outcome. | :16:01. | :16:07.
these wonderful scenes at the end. By was thinking to run as quickly | :16:07. | :16:17.
:16:17. | :16:18. | ||
as possible. I was more tired trying to get in the tunnel than | :16:18. | :16:23.
playing the game. But it was very nice. I think you've got the | :16:23. | :16:33.
:16:33. | :16:34. | ||
champagne out. There you are. was fantastic. To be doing that, it | :16:34. | :16:42.
was fantastic. You have got a massive season coming up. It is | :16:42. | :16:49.
very exciting. Since I was young, I wanted to play the Premier League. | :16:50. | :16:59.
And to be able to do it next year would be under but does Margaret | :16:59. | :17:04.
unbelievable. We can enjoy the summer and be ready for next year. | :17:05. | :17:10.
I have got great memories of the Premier League. To get back in | :17:10. | :17:14.
their with a great club is what I am looking forward to. Thank you | :17:14. | :17:21.
both are joining us. Southampton were never outside the top two. | :17:21. | :17:23.
They have their deserved place in the Premier League. | :17:23. | :17:33.
:17:33. | :17:35. | ||
There were more celebrations for Reading yesterday. One man helped | :17:35. | :17:38.
get them into the Premier League, the other seems destined to keep | :17:38. | :17:44.
them there. A mantle of ownership is being passed on any day now. The | :17:44. | :17:52.
new man takes on a club on a hike. Earlier, thousands braved wind and | :17:52. | :17:58.
rain to salute their heroes. There is a real bond between the players | :17:58. | :18:04.
and staff and supporters. It is tangible. We have won the league, | :18:04. | :18:11.
but we have had a hit for a long time now, now we have got this team. | :18:11. | :18:17.
There is a real bond between everybody. Today has been an | :18:17. | :18:21.
absolute sensation. The amount of people that turned up on a day like | :18:21. | :18:27.
today just goes to show what people think of what has occurred here in | :18:27. | :18:31.
Reading. The championship season ended with the first defeat in | :18:31. | :18:36.
eight games at Birmingham. But it was a game of three penalties, and | :18:37. | :18:42.
only one of them would find the target. Ian Hart saw his effort | :18:42. | :18:48.
saved. Birmingham put the game to bed. But in stoppage time, the | :18:48. | :18:58.
former Bournemouth winger missed. But Reading was much big moment | :18:58. | :19:08.
:19:08. | :19:12. | ||
would be lifting the championship trophy, moments later. | :19:12. | :19:15.
And this is the trophy itself - one of the most famous in world | :19:15. | :19:23.
football. Congratulations to Reading on winning the Championship | :19:23. | :19:33.
:19:33. | :19:34. | ||
and lifting the trophy yesterday at the Madejski Stadium. This banner | :19:34. | :19:37.
was held up by Portsmouth players in front of their travelling fans | :19:37. | :19:40.
at Nottingham Forest. The message is simple. The round-up kicks off | :19:40. | :19:45.
with Portsmouth's farewell to the Championship. | :19:45. | :19:50.
A handshake from Steve Cotterell to Michael Appleton. He may be | :19:51. | :19:55.
relieved he left Portsmouth. Appleton inherited a club about to | :19:55. | :20:01.

those players will be back again next season. Honestly, I would be | :20:18. | :20:23.
very surprised if there are more than one or two. It could be as big | :20:23. | :20:31.
as 17 or 18 players leaving. So, it will obviously be a tough summer. | :20:31. | :20:40.
War-cry consigned off, born one were denied a win. But it was | :20:40. | :20:47.
levelled 11 minutes from the end. Crawley remained in League Two, | :20:47. | :20:53.
despite a 3-0 lead. A win on the final day should be enough to take | :20:53. | :21:02.
them into League One. And Aldershot came from to have been one down. | :21:02. | :21:04.
Possibly one more promotion still to come. | :21:04. | :21:07.

the Olympic rings. It would be amazing if we could break a record. | :21:46. | :21:50.
We do not know how many people are taking part, but we do know there | :21:50. | :21:55.
are more than 2,100, enough to break the world record, and we have | :21:55. | :22:05.
:22:05. | :22:06. | ||
got to stand here for 10 minutes. The best place to be a spectator | :22:06. | :22:10.
was in a helicopter, but all the celebrating was on the ground. | :22:10. | :22:15.
is brilliant. We will not be in the Guinness Book of World Records. | :22:15. | :22:21.
Really excited. I am pretty happy we have done all for charity. We | :22:21. | :22:26.
had broken a world record. Everyone paid one plan to take part. The | :22:26. | :22:31.
money raised will go to and although it does matter in the | :22:31. | :22:35.
orphanage and Malawi. We now need to send of Allah evidence to the | :22:35. | :22:41.

we should get a certificate to the praise. | :22:49. | :22:52.
The final preparations are being made for the Queen's visit to | :22:52. | :22:55.
