A man remains in custody on suspicion of murder tonight after | :00:59. | :01:03.
the death of two teenage girls who were hit by a car in Gosport. Olivia | :01:04. | :01:07.
Lewry and Jasmine Allsop were walking along Ann's Hill Road in the | :01:08. | :01:11.
early hours of Sunday morning when the car mounted the pavement. | :01:12. | :01:15.
14`year`old Jasmine died at the scene. 16`year`old Olivia died later | :01:16. | :01:20.
in hospital. Sean Killick has been following the story. He's in Gosport | :01:21. | :01:29.
for us tonight. Sean. It has been an emotional day here. | :01:30. | :01:35.
The death of two team the `` two teenage girls in such a way has left | :01:36. | :01:44.
everybody shock. Tonight the mother of the girls has said that the two | :01:45. | :01:51.
girls were just having a quiet mountain. 16`year`olds Olivia Lewry | :01:52. | :01:57.
and 40 Jasmine Allsop, best friend who died together in horrific | :01:58. | :02:03.
circumstances. The pair are worse truck `` the pair were struck a | :02:04. | :02:10.
green Honda Civic. Jasmine was pronounced dead at the scene, Olivia | :02:11. | :02:14.
died later in hospital. Today the route has reopened and scores of | :02:15. | :02:19.
floral tributes were left by friends, including one teenager he | :02:20. | :02:23.
had been a lifelong friend of Olivia. She had lots of friends, she | :02:24. | :02:33.
will be greatly missed. She got on with your work. Everyone has been | :02:34. | :02:41.
putting messages on Facebook to say they miss. The family have delivered | :02:42. | :02:49.
this with the rest of their lives. Jasmine'smother said that after the | :02:50. | :02:53.
accident, she went to her daughter in the room, kissed, told her she | :02:54. | :02:59.
was her angel. Her father said that they have run out of words of | :03:00. | :03:06.
comfort to say. The headteacher of their school said they were both | :03:07. | :03:10.
independent, strong minded individuals who live their lives to | :03:11. | :03:13.
the full with confidence and a sense of humour, a sense of fun. We will | :03:14. | :03:17.
miss them both immensely and a unique talents. Olivia had began | :03:18. | :03:24.
studying at Saint Vincent 's College in Gosport. The principal said that | :03:25. | :03:31.
they were all shocked. Some students were particularly close to her, she | :03:32. | :03:36.
was very local to the college. We will be offering counselling and | :03:37. | :03:40.
working with the police. We know that a 20`year`old man has | :03:41. | :03:44.
been arrested. What is the latest in the investigation? At 20`year`old | :03:45. | :03:49.
man from Gosport is being questioned at a Hampshire police station on | :03:50. | :03:54.
suspicion of murder. The police have made this fresh appeal. There has | :03:55. | :04:01.
been speculation on Facebook about the events leading up to that time | :04:02. | :04:08.
on Sunday morning. We want to know what happened. We are interested in | :04:09. | :04:11.
getting that information while we have a suspect in custody. We want | :04:12. | :04:17.
the public to tell us about it. Tonight the pleas have been granted | :04:18. | :04:20.
further time to question the man they arrested. They now have until | :04:21. | :04:24.
tomorrow evening. A man has been jailed for five years | :04:25. | :04:28.
for the manslaughter of another man in Berkshire. 42`year`old Simon | :04:29. | :04:30.
Velvick, from Newbury, pleaded guilty to the unlawful death of Mark | :04:31. | :04:33.
Campbell. He'd argued with Mr Campbell at a house party in the | :04:34. | :04:37.
town in June this year, before punching him. Paramedics found Mr | :04:38. | :04:40.
Campbell at a house in The Nightingales. He died of a brain | :04:41. | :04:46.
haemorrhage. A coroner has criticised the parents | :04:47. | :04:49.
of a seven`year`old boy who died from a severe head injury in | :04:50. | :04:53.
Southampton. Blake Fowler was seven. His stepfather, an amateur boxer, | :04:54. | :04:57.
had a long and alarming history of violent behaviour and had been | :04:58. | :04:59.
investigated by police and social services. The coroner said Peter | :05:00. | :05:04.
Meek and Blake's mother, Sarah Spacanya, had fallen woefully short | :05:05. | :05:07.
as parents. Tom Hepworth was in court. What were the events leading | :05:08. | :05:13.
up to this little boy's death? This is the first four inquests into the | :05:14. | :05:17.
unconnected deaths of four children in Southampton in recent years, | :05:18. | :05:21.
which will be heard this week. Blake was being looked after by Peter Meek | :05:22. | :05:25.
at his grandparents' house back in early December 2011. In police | :05:26. | :05:28.
interviews, Peter Meek said he was preparing lunch while Blake was | :05:29. | :05:31.
play`fighting next door. He told detectives he heard a loud bang and | :05:32. | :05:35.
Blake came into the room crying and upset saying he'd been hit and fell | :05:36. | :05:40.
off the sofa banging his head. He then said he felt dizzy, began to | :05:41. | :05:44.
wobble and lost conciousness. He was taken to hospital, but died the next | :05:45. | :05:49.
day. Pathologist Dr Basil Purdue said he suffered a serious brain | :05:50. | :05:53.
injury but there was no evidence it was the result of a blow rather than | :05:54. | :05:58.
a fall. He also said there were flakes of white paint or Aertex in | :05:59. | :06:01.
Blake's hair, but couldn't say how they got there. How well`known were | :06:02. | :06:06.
the family to social services and police? It wasn't the first time | :06:07. | :06:10.
they had come into contact with them. At the time, Peter Meek was on | :06:11. | :06:13.
bail for assaulting Sarah Spacagna. They had also investigated two | :06:14. | :06:15.
previous suspicious incidents involving Blake, one three years | :06:16. | :06:18.
previously where he suffered crush injuries to his genitals and another | :06:19. | :06:22.
when he was scalded when he was one`year`old. No further action was | :06:23. | :06:28.
taken in the incident in 2008 and the court was told there was an | :06:29. | :06:31.
unclear outcome in the earlier incident. I asked the council | :06:32. | :06:37.
whether Blake was on the at risk register when he died. They said | :06:38. | :06:41.
they weren't able to tell me because it could influence an independent | :06:42. | :06:46.
serious case review into his death. In recording an open verdict, the | :06:47. | :06:49.
coroner said the case had uncovered a plethora of lies and that Sarah | :06:50. | :06:53.
Spacagna and Peter Meek were guilty of an appalling and disgraceful | :06:54. | :06:56.
failure to prioritise the needs of Blake and it was difficult to know | :06:57. | :07:03.
exactly how he died. An investigation is continuing into | :07:04. | :07:07.
how a woman died after being trapped in a cave by rising sea water on the | :07:08. | :07:11.
Dorset coast on Saturday. People walking along cliffs above the Tilly | :07:12. | :07:14.
Whim Caves near Swanage raised the alarm after spotting a man in the | :07:15. | :07:17.
sea. Rescue teams managed to save him, but his sister couldn't be | :07:18. | :07:21.
reached. It's understood they had been coasteering, an adventure sport | :07:22. | :07:24.
which involves climbing along cliffs and diving into the sea when they | :07:25. | :07:27.
become too steep to negotiate. Jo Kent reports. | :07:28. | :07:36.
In dual force winds and high seas, the coastguard this man from the | :07:37. | :07:45.
water. On the cliffs above, a number of people watched. It soon became | :07:46. | :07:49.
apparent was some of the Elton difficulty. The gentleman I did see | :07:50. | :07:53.
was indicating towards the coastline. He was indicating that | :07:54. | :08:01.
there was somebody else under where we were standing in the caves. We | :08:02. | :08:07.
saw the guy could find to the next level and talk to someone through | :08:08. | :08:15.
the cave. This footage shows just how rough the sea was. It was | :08:16. | :08:19.
impossible for lifeboats to reach the cave. The only other way in was | :08:20. | :08:24.
through a very narrow hole at the top. At the time a cliff rescue | :08:25. | :08:28.
specialist was lowered in, the women had died. Conditions today could not | :08:29. | :08:39.
have been more different. I could see instantly the weather was so bad | :08:40. | :08:42.
that the lifeboat was struggling. With the wind coming in, it was a | :08:43. | :08:48.
very challenging operating environment. Specialist teams are | :08:49. | :08:54.
working to recover the body of the woman. It is known that the pair | :08:55. | :08:58.
were a brother and sister from London, taking part in coasteering. | :08:59. | :09:06.
The brother and sister were on their own, not doing it as part of the | :09:07. | :09:13.
grid. Coasteering is growing in popularity in the area. Risk | :09:14. | :09:18.
assessments are strict and safety is a top priority. We always do with | :09:19. | :09:25.
the minimum of two guides, carrying lots of safety equipment. Even when | :09:26. | :09:30.
the tie into the sea itself, if we are not happy with the conditions, | :09:31. | :09:38.
we will call it off. Agencies are working together to decide when to | :09:39. | :09:45.
make another attempt to reclaim the lady'sbody. | :09:46. | :09:48.
They have already been introduced in cities like Portsmouth, Oxford and | :09:49. | :09:51.
Chichester. Today, Winchester begins consulting on proposed 20mph speed | :09:52. | :09:53.
limits. Exhibitions outlining the affected areas will run for two | :09:54. | :09:57.
weeks in venues across the city. The city council says a limit would | :09:58. | :10:00.
improve traffic flow and safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. | :10:01. | :10:11.
Still to come in this evening's South Today: Just keep your eye on | :10:12. | :10:16.
the ball ` the wind is up and the Saints' goalkeeper is left | :10:17. | :10:26.
red`faced. It is expected that the cost of building the Royal Navy's | :10:27. | :10:29.
latest aircraft carriers will increase to ?6.2 billion. | :10:30. | :10:31.
When the contract was first announced six years ago, the | :10:32. | :10:34.
projected cost was around half that figure at ?3.5 billion. The defence | :10:35. | :10:38.
project is one of the biggest ever undertaken in the UK and has been | :10:39. | :10:41.
beset by construction and design delays. Both carriers are to be | :10:42. | :10:44.
partially built in Portsmouth and it will be a decade before they come | :10:45. | :10:54.
into service. The Medmerry coastal defence scheme, | :10:55. | :10:58.
near Selsey in West Sussex, has been opened officially today. | :10:59. | :11:01.
The sea has been allowed to flood a large area that had been protected | :11:02. | :11:04.
by a shingle bank for hundreds of years. Back in September, the | :11:05. | :11:07.
Environment Agency breached the shingle bank to create the largest | :11:08. | :11:09.
coastal realignment in modern British history. The sea is now held | :11:10. | :11:13.
back by a new bank inland. The flooded land will become salt marsh | :11:14. | :11:17.
and is being managed by the RSPB as a nature reserve. | :11:18. | :11:24.
Imagine being given just six weeks' notice that you were being evicted | :11:25. | :11:29.
from your home. That's what happened to the residents of the Wiltshire | :11:30. | :11:32.
village of Imber back in 1943. They were removed from their homes so the | :11:33. | :11:36.
village could be used for training troops and never allowed to live | :11:37. | :11:39.
there again. So, when the remaining former residents and their families | :11:40. | :11:42.
went back on the 70th anniversary of that departure it was a bitter`sweet | :11:43. | :11:50.
return. Laura Lyon reports. Saint Giles Church in the village of | :11:51. | :11:55.
Imber looks and sounds like any other, except it doesn't have any | :11:56. | :12:01.
parishioners. These sisters can only ten to their parents grave when the | :12:02. | :12:05.
villages opened up to the public by the Ministry of Defence. Mums | :12:06. | :12:11.
favourite colour was red. We always try to put red around. At the | :12:12. | :12:16.
beginning of November 1943 residents received letters from the War office | :12:17. | :12:20.
telling them to leave their homes within six weeks. In the middle of | :12:21. | :12:25.
Salisbury plain, the village was ideal for American troops to train. | :12:26. | :12:30.
The sister still remember the impact of those letters arriving. I can | :12:31. | :12:39.
remember my mum being really upset. She just sat there and cried stop | :12:40. | :12:49.
this family still enjoys making the annual pilgrimage. When we used a | :12:50. | :12:54.
comeback in the first few years, you did meet up with people that you | :12:55. | :12:58.
could remember. The years have gone by, and you don't see anyone about. | :12:59. | :13:05.
There are not many left. The families were rehoused across a wide | :13:06. | :13:08.
area. Generations later younger relatives make the trip to explore | :13:09. | :13:14.
their ancestors homes. We came to see our cousins. And to know more | :13:15. | :13:23.
about her family. The church is one of the only buildings left in its | :13:24. | :13:28.
original form. Others remain out of bounds, still used for military | :13:29. | :13:37.
training. On Friday. | :13:38. | :13:43.
Now on Friday you may remember we asked you to help us find a woman | :13:44. | :13:49.
from the Isle of Wight. She'd left a touching note on the grave of her | :13:50. | :13:53.
grandfather, who died in the first World War. Well, we've found her. | :13:54. | :13:56.
The grave is of Private George Hanlon and its in the Howard Davis | :13:57. | :13:59.
Park Military Cemetery in Jersey. On the grave was a note that simply | :14:00. | :14:03.
said, Dear Great Granddad. We have found you at last. From Rosie. Rosie | :14:04. | :14:07.
turns out to be Rosie Weston, who now lives in Normandy. I always | :14:08. | :14:10.
thought it was so sad that he was so far away and no one could visit him. | :14:11. | :14:15.
I asked them, my husband and his friend, to go and have a look for | :14:16. | :14:20.
him. They find the grave. We prepared the new beforehand and too | :14:21. | :14:32.
good with us with the plastic rules. In case you're wondering, Rosie | :14:33. | :14:36.
wasn't watching us in Normandy ` it was her sister, who still lives on | :14:37. | :14:40.
the Isle of Wight, who put us in touch after seeing Friday's | :14:41. | :14:51.
programme. Now, this sport. Picture the scene, a rock`solid defence, | :14:52. | :14:57.
then this happens. Let's take a look at the moment. This is just a few | :14:58. | :15:01.
seconds after kick`off at the Britannia stadium, Boruc done by the | :15:02. | :15:06.
bounce, it seems. It was only the third goal Saints have conceded all | :15:07. | :15:09.
season, certainly the most bizarre, and it put them behind. It has | :15:10. | :15:18.
happened before, Peter Shilton in 1967. In form Jay Rodriguex planted | :15:19. | :15:22.
this header into the ground and eventually into the net to equalise | :15:23. | :15:25.
for Saints before half`time. They're sixth in the table. Here's Boruc. | :15:26. | :15:32.
Obviously it was windy. After the points I realised I was in the | :15:33. | :15:46.
middle of nowhere. They need to try to stay focused on the next game. | :15:47. | :15:55.
Some people run me to tell me about Peter Shilton in 1967, so thanks for | :15:56. | :16:03.
that. Reading harbour hopes of a swift return to the Premier League | :16:04. | :16:06.
and, although they were beaten 5`2 at Sheffield Wednesday, manager | :16:07. | :16:09.
Nigel Adkins took a lot of heart from the performance. | :16:10. | :16:12.
Matty Fryatt scored twice on the day, former Royal Michail Antonio | :16:13. | :16:15.
with a good finish. Pavel Pogrebnyak with a header. Unlucky, before | :16:16. | :16:21.
half`time. Sean Morrison with an own goal. Wednesday went further ahead, | :16:22. | :16:29.
so Adam Le Fondre's penalty was a consolation. It is hard when you get | :16:30. | :16:40.
beaten 5`2, but you actually played all right. Well done to Sheffield | :16:41. | :16:45.
Wednesday. They have had to wait a long time for this. They got a | :16:46. | :16:50.
thumping victory. We know that we have to do better. We will start | :16:51. | :16:56.
again on Monday morning. We will try to keep improving. | :16:57. | :16:59.
Here's what else happened in the Football League. Bournemouth fans | :17:00. | :17:05.
knew this would not be an easy season, so it is no surprise to see | :17:06. | :17:10.
them on a tough run of results. Bolton may be struggling, but we | :17:11. | :17:15.
still have good players with Premier League experience. Scoring goals in | :17:16. | :17:23.
The Championship hasn't been a problem for the cherries until now. | :17:24. | :17:27.
This is the first blank of the season. Jermaine Beckford with a | :17:28. | :17:32.
deflected second for Walton got the final goal in the last minute. They | :17:33. | :17:37.
keep flooding through the turnstiles at Portsmouth. More than 16,000 fans | :17:38. | :17:43.
at Fratton Park. They were treated to a fine opening goal. Early in the | :17:44. | :17:50.
second half, Ryan Bird does really well. His header doubled the lead. | :17:51. | :17:56.
He would get in on the action again. A mistake brought Exeter back | :17:57. | :18:05.
into the game. Trevor Carson will want to watch this one back too many | :18:06. | :18:12.
times. John O'Flynn turned in a deep cross. Carson redeemed himself with | :18:13. | :18:17.
a couple of late saves. Portsmouth held on. | :18:18. | :18:20.
Two Hamble`based yachtsmen will have to wait three more days before being | :18:21. | :18:23.
able to start the Transat Jacques Vabre yacht race from France to | :18:24. | :18:27.
Brazil. The start of the race has been delayed for a second time due | :18:28. | :18:30.
to bad weather. Our reporter Andy Breare has been speaking to Sam | :18:31. | :18:33.
Goodchild and his co`skipper, Ned Collier Wakefield, in Le Havre today | :18:34. | :18:36.
After news of another delay, there has been a despondent mood in the | :18:37. | :18:41.
race village today. Le Havre was battered by 70 Malabar wins. The | :18:42. | :18:45.
skipper says that the postponement is understandable. He understand why | :18:46. | :18:54.
it is made. You just want to get on with it. If we had an option to go | :18:55. | :19:02.
in later wins, then let's take it. I want to race, like everyone else, | :19:03. | :19:06.
and you want everyone to have the same chance of winning `` 70 Malabar | :19:07. | :19:15.
wins might not let everyone finish! They couldn't start the race today | :19:16. | :19:23.
because of the high winds. The race was postponed until Thursday. It | :19:24. | :19:28.
actually happened two years ago as well. There are a lot of owner | :19:29. | :19:34.
drivers, as we call them, in this class. The lasting you want to do is | :19:35. | :19:43.
go out and lose all your investment. 80% of the fleet didn't want to | :19:44. | :19:46.
leave. For us it is the right decision. The last thing we want to | :19:47. | :19:53.
do is go and break our boat. If we can sail in later wins, we will be | :19:54. | :19:58.
happier. The frustrating game continues, then, as they prepare to | :19:59. | :20:06.
race to Brazil on Thursday. Elsewhere this weekend, James | :20:07. | :20:08.
O'Connor produced what London Irish director of rugby Brian Smith | :20:09. | :20:11.
described as an outstanding display on his debut for the club. | :20:12. | :20:14.
The exiles were beaten by Northampton on Saturday. O'Connor | :20:15. | :20:17.
set up Salosi Tangithaibau for the Exiles's only try of the match. And | :20:18. | :20:21.
the game was even until a late try from the visitors. Meanwhile, | :20:22. | :20:34.
Basingstoke Bison held off the challenge of Peterborough on | :20:35. | :20:37.
Saturday night to claim a 5`2 win and stay second in ice hockey's | :20:38. | :20:40.
Premier League. The fifth goal came from Tomas Karpov, his second on the | :20:41. | :20:43.
night. Now it's that time of year again ` | :20:44. | :20:47.
the bear's big night out for Children In Need at Beaulieu is just | :20:48. | :20:51.
11 days away, This week, we'll be looking at how the money you gave so | :20:52. | :20:55.
generously last year has been used across the South, starting tonight | :20:56. | :20:58.
with a look at projects in Portsmouth, the Thames Valley, and | :20:59. | :21:01.
first, the Isle of Wight. This project at Newport supports parents | :21:02. | :21:06.
with anxiety or depression issues, to make sure that the children get | :21:07. | :21:13.
all the care that they need. They give us ?6,471. We provide to 40 | :21:14. | :21:18.
family groups for families who are vulnerable and isolated. It might be | :21:19. | :21:24.
that their parents are suffering from anxiety or depression which | :21:25. | :21:28.
means going to agribusiness would be difficult for them. It is lovely to | :21:29. | :21:42.
see her family coming together and be helped. To know that help is out | :21:43. | :21:56.
there is amazing. This is the only charity in Berks to help those who | :21:57. | :22:04.
have been told they are HIV`positive. The money has allowed | :22:05. | :22:11.
them to hire a youth worker. HIV is a manageable condition, but the | :22:12. | :22:18.
shock of having the diagnosis can be devastating. You can get on with | :22:19. | :22:25.
your life. We got ?94,000 over three years. To what is the door and meet | :22:26. | :22:30.
other people who are positive as well, you can see the relief on | :22:31. | :22:34.
their fierce. They can be themselves here and just have fun stop it | :22:35. | :22:45.
really makes a difference. Think of Pompey, and you probably | :22:46. | :22:51.
think of the role. The culture number of different sports, and as | :22:52. | :22:55.
well as focus on fitness, it is about building confidence and | :22:56. | :23:01.
friendships. Children in Need funded us ?44,500 for a two`year project | :23:02. | :23:07.
that aims to offer an `` an inclusive after`school club, | :23:08. | :23:11.
increased their friendship groups, increased their physical activity | :23:12. | :23:14.
and increase their confidence. We have seen a real difference. We have | :23:15. | :23:20.
seen lots of smiles at the end of sessions, which is fantastic to see. | :23:21. | :23:32.
It was an exciting night of dance, music and song at the Mayflower | :23:33. | :23:35.
Theatre in Southampton last night. All to raise money for Children in | :23:36. | :23:39.
Need and they did really well. The touring caste and backstage crew of | :23:40. | :23:42.
Ghost the Musical took the Strictly idea and performed brilliantly. | :23:43. | :23:45.
Among the judges were actor Nigel Harman and Jason Donovan. And Sally | :23:46. | :23:49.
was also there to get it off to a roaring start. Here's a flavour of | :23:50. | :23:55.
the night! You have a treat in store tonight! | :23:56. | :24:09.
I thought Jack was let down by the girls, because he was that good! It | :24:10. | :24:23.
is always nice to get out there and sing songs. Great to see here | :24:24. | :24:30.
supporting it. Jason Donovan was singing on stage! Really good! | :24:31. | :24:47.
Here is a cheque for ?36,000! That is incredible! | :24:48. | :25:02.
I think that is amazing. An amazing amount of money. You have all done | :25:03. | :25:10.
fantastically well. Let's get straight on to the weather. | :25:11. | :25:17.
Starlings making shapes in the sky at Somerley estate near Ringwood, | :25:18. | :25:32.

spreading to all parts by Wednesday morning. It is bonfire night | :26:33. | :26:39.
