rise. That is all from

:00:00.:00:00.

Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's programme:

:00:00.:00:09.

Flooding and high tides ` the South bears the brunt as more wild weather

:00:10.:00:18.

batters the coast. It has the power of nature. You

:00:19.:00:22.

can't vote against it, you've just got to hope for the best.

:00:23.:00:25.

Weighing in ` new figures reveal that Gosport is one of the fattest

:00:26.:00:28.

towns in the country. McDonald's, Burger King.

:00:29.:00:33.

You can't see it working down the high street, most people are pretty

:00:34.:00:35.

normal. By royal appointment ` Queen

:00:36.:00:38.

guitarist Brian May funds an alternative to the badger cull.

:00:39.:00:41.

And remembered 70 years on ` the Portsmouth warship nicknamed HMS

:00:42.:00:44.

Pepperpot because she was hit so many times.

:00:45.:00:53.

Everywhere we went, the German aircraft followed us around. It was

:00:54.:00:56.

the most bombed ship in World War II.

:00:57.:01:05.

There's been more wild weather today with disruption for travellers,

:01:06.:01:09.

concern for people living by the coast and swollen rivers and

:01:10.:01:12.

structural damage to two well known piers. The worst of it has been

:01:13.:01:18.

around Weymouth where two severe flood warnings are in force but many

:01:19.:01:21.

other areas have had strong winds and stormy seas. Briony Leyland

:01:22.:01:28.

reports. Another pounding for Portland. Last

:01:29.:01:35.

month, flood sirens sounded here for the first time in 30 years. Today,

:01:36.:01:40.

residents heard them again, a warning to stay inside their homes

:01:41.:01:44.

as high water approached. In nearby Weymouth, a force ten gale off on

:01:45.:01:49.

the shore. I thought I would check it out

:01:50.:01:56.

because last night was really high. I was seeing how far away from the

:01:57.:02:00.

front door it was getting. Anxious times for supporters of the

:02:01.:02:05.

South Parade here. Bits of the boat deck came loose on the high seas and

:02:06.:02:14.

were strewn across the beach. The chances of `` the need to secure a

:02:15.:02:20.

deal is increasingly urgent. It is the first tragedy in what

:02:21.:02:26.

could be a long line of tragedies. We are just trying to get this into

:02:27.:02:31.

community hands fast so it can't be repaired.

:02:32.:02:36.

In Brighton, this is swallowed a big chunk of this year. `` pier. Rail

:02:37.:02:49.

and ferry services were disrupted. Sluice gates have been disrupted

:02:50.:02:58.

here. The council says flooding may be unavoidable.

:02:59.:03:10.

New Government figures on obesity have revealed that Gosport is one of

:03:11.:03:14.

the fattest places in the country. According to the figures, almost 73%

:03:15.:03:17.

of its residents are overweight or obese. That compares to a national

:03:18.:03:20.

average of around 64%. In neighbouring Portsmouth, the figure

:03:21.:03:23.

is 57%, one of the best`performing areas in the South. Obesity is one

:03:24.:03:26.

of the biggest public health challenges and in Gosport it's

:03:27.:03:32.

getting worse. When it comes to obesity, things are

:03:33.:03:39.

not working out for Gosport. The man who has run this gem in the town for

:03:40.:03:43.

20 years says it is always been a problem.

:03:44.:03:47.

When I was young you did PE every day, you ate proper food. Now there

:03:48.:03:53.

is no hope it is. I get young carrots and today `` young kids and

:03:54.:04:00.

today who don't even know what protein and hyper crowd ``

:04:01.:04:05.

carbohydrates are. The number of children in sport has

:04:06.:04:24.

increased. One thing Gosport has plenty of, it

:04:25.:04:30.

appeals to all ages, takeaway. In the town there is one fast`food

:04:31.:04:35.

outlet for every hundred people and a population of 90,000.

:04:36.:04:43.

There's lots of fast food. I haven't noticed anything like

:04:44.:04:47.

this. I've seen fit people around, I haven't seen fat people.

:04:48.:04:52.

You can't really see it. Most people are pretty normal. I don't see why

:04:53.:04:57.

so many people are in that percentage at all.

:04:58.:05:02.

The council says it is tackling the problem. People are working out at

:05:03.:05:12.

this leisure centre. But the problem will weigh on their mind for some

:05:13.:05:18.

time yet. Last year, councils were given greater responsibility for

:05:19.:05:21.

public health. A short time ago I spoke to Dr Ruth Milton from

:05:22.:05:24.

Hampshire County Council and asked her if she was surprised by

:05:25.:05:29.

Gosport's figures. I'm not surprised at all. We've

:05:30.:05:33.

known there's been an issue with children and Gosport for a while but

:05:34.:05:39.

today emphasises the problem for adults.

:05:40.:05:46.

Is there an issue with money? There is always an issue with money

:05:47.:05:51.

but with the council we are working to really focus and using it to its

:05:52.:06:00.

best effect. One in five children in year six is

:06:01.:06:05.

obese. They are worrying statistics. They

:06:06.:06:13.

are worrying but at the same time childhood obesity rates are not

:06:14.:06:21.

increasing. And the adult rate of increase is slowing down. We're not

:06:22.:06:28.

there yet but we're on the journey. Whatever you're doing already seems

:06:29.:06:31.

not to be working so what more are you going to do?

:06:32.:06:37.

We are working with the schools and with the borough council and other

:06:38.:06:40.

partners to really help people access things that can support their

:06:41.:06:50.

lifestyles from the work we do with children through the Mend

:06:51.:06:56.

programme. This really is about educating

:06:57.:07:01.

people. It is more than just educating

:07:02.:07:05.

people, it is about how they live their lives and working across the

:07:06.:07:07.

partnerships to make sure there is the right environment for them to

:07:08.:07:14.

eat healthily and take exercise and not feel that there is a limitation

:07:15.:07:18.

on what they can do. I'm cute.

:07:19.:07:25.

`` thank you. Police investigating the suspected murder of a man 15

:07:26.:07:29.

years ago have called off a dig in the garden of a former Fareham pub.

:07:30.:07:33.

Kevin Palmer went missing after a night out in 1999. Hampshire Police

:07:34.:07:36.

say they began digging at the disused site yesterday but say

:07:37.:07:43.

nothing was found. Campaigners in Weymouth hoping to

:07:44.:07:46.

have land re`registered as a town green to block development have lost

:07:47.:07:49.

their Supreme Court challenge. The long`running case concerned whether

:07:50.:07:52.

the area known as Markham and Little Francis should be protected after it

:07:53.:07:56.

was bought by a property developer. It is a legal fight over a

:07:57.:08:00.

picturesque space which could turn ugly in the courts. It has been

:08:01.:08:06.

enjoyed by dog walkers for years and was given detective status over a

:08:07.:08:13.

year ago. The people who own the land say that it shouldn't have been

:08:14.:08:18.

registered civil and went to the Supreme Court is to get it taken off

:08:19.:08:20.

the list. To have gotten this far and lost we

:08:21.:08:28.

are all disappointed. This decision could have legal

:08:29.:08:34.

implications for other areas. What this case turns on us can

:08:35.:08:41.

developers come along and left a statutory protection many years

:08:42.:08:46.

later and then build on the land? For developers, the land value could

:08:47.:08:54.

be millions. But for the people who use it is value is simply it.

:08:55.:08:59.

I got there and children who come here and love it.

:09:00.:09:02.

It is pretty match the only green space left in the area.

:09:03.:09:26.

Still to come in this evening's South Today: Nicknamed HMS Pepperpot

:09:27.:09:31.

` the Portsmouth warship hit so many times during the Second World War.

:09:32.:09:41.

Network Rail has laid out its scheme for a new direct rail link between

:09:42.:09:44.

Reading and Heathrow Airport. Subject to planning permission, it

:09:45.:09:47.

aims to start groundwork in two years' time and open in 2021. Our

:09:48.:09:50.

Transport Correspondent Paul Clifton is here. The idea has been around

:09:51.:09:56.

for a while but this sounds much more definite.

:09:57.:09:59.

We knew the Government was putting up half a billion pounds for this.

:10:00.:10:03.

Four trains an hour, running from Reading straight into Heathrow's

:10:04.:10:08.

Terminal Five. Now we know that, if it gets planning approval, the work

:10:09.:10:12.

will begin two years from now. There will be a five kilometre tunnel and

:10:13.:10:15.

digging that will begin in 2018, with the first trains in 2021. There

:10:16.:10:20.

will be a spur off the Great Western Main Line. Let's zoom in and see

:10:21.:10:24.

that it will leave the Main Line east of Slough, straight into the

:10:25.:10:27.

tunnel to get underneath the M4 and then the M25 and into Terminal Five.

:10:28.:10:32.

There is already space for two platforms under the airport. A big

:10:33.:10:36.

empty box was built at the same time as the terminal, it just needs

:10:37.:10:39.

fitting out. This would bring big benefits to the

:10:40.:10:43.

Thames Valley. Local business groups reckon it will

:10:44.:10:46.

create 40,000 jobs in the Thames Valley and bring ?2 billion in

:10:47.:10:50.

economic benefits. It would pay for itself in ten years. At the moment,

:10:51.:10:55.

to get from Reading to Heathrow by public transport you either take a

:10:56.:10:59.

bus or get the train into London and then back out again. This will take

:11:00.:11:03.

half an hour off the journey. So what has happened to plans for a

:11:04.:11:06.

Southern Rail route into Heathrow? Has that gone away?

:11:07.:11:10.

No, it hasn't gone away. But nor has it really moved forward. The scheme

:11:11.:11:13.

is called Airtrack and it seemed certain to happen. But some local

:11:14.:11:16.

councils raised concerns about how much time level crossings would be

:11:17.:11:19.

closed to road traffic. That stifled progress but it could eventually

:11:20.:11:29.

still go ahead. The South Downs were turned into a

:11:30.:11:33.

national park to help keep it as a green open space. But a row has

:11:34.:11:37.

broken out at Rogate in West Sussex over plans for a new golf course.

:11:38.:11:41.

The greens and fairways would be put on heathland. The golf club says

:11:42.:11:44.

walkers and grazing animals will still be able to use the land. Sean

:11:45.:11:48.

Killick reports. It is he planned at the moment, it

:11:49.:11:53.

is also designated as common land which gives people the right to

:11:54.:12:01.

raise livestock here. But it is owned by a golf club who want to put

:12:02.:12:10.

a new course on the land. They say public access would be retained and

:12:11.:12:16.

people could still raise livestock but these people say that they be

:12:17.:12:20.

difficult. We would have to keep the cattle in

:12:21.:12:24.

certain areas and then move them as and when. I don't know how it would

:12:25.:12:30.

work but it would be totally practical.

:12:31.:12:35.

A group campaigning to protect common land rejects the plan.

:12:36.:12:41.

It is going to be very dangerous because we know the speed golf balls

:12:42.:12:48.

travel it. Unless they restrict access where people to currently go

:12:49.:12:53.

where they like, my concern is for people 's safety.

:12:54.:12:57.

The golf club declines to be interviewed but in the statement

:12:58.:13:05.

they said they had no intention of stopping public access, merely to

:13:06.:13:10.

prevent its abuse, such as scrambling, fly`tipping and

:13:11.:13:17.

vandalism. There will be a vote on the plan in the next few months.

:13:18.:13:26.

More than half of Portsmouth's parking wardens will be on strike

:13:27.:13:30.

today. The 24 hour walk out by union members began last night from

:13:31.:13:33.

midnight. The wardens are complaining about pay and poor

:13:34.:13:36.

changing facilities. They also claim they're under increased pressure to

:13:37.:13:39.

issue tickets. The council says it's still talking to the unions but says

:13:40.:13:42.

it does not set targets for parking tickets, as this would be illegal.

:13:43.:13:48.

It badger vaccination programme could be cheaper and more effective

:13:49.:13:59.

than a cull. Brian May is heading the campaign.

:14:00.:14:05.

He'd already set up the badger sett the site in Dorset and today rock

:14:06.:14:09.

star Bryan make to the House of Commons to call the county to be an

:14:10.:14:15.

early pioneering vaccination against TB as an alternative to the cull.

:14:16.:14:20.

If you do for years of vaccinations you would get her immunity which

:14:21.:14:28.

takes them out of the equation. We are concerned about the badgers and

:14:29.:14:34.

the cattle to the government on again about the cattle because they

:14:35.:14:40.

make money. Partly because of monitoring, the

:14:41.:14:48.

costs rose above vaccination. More than 300,000 people have signed

:14:49.:14:52.

a petition calling for a badger vaccination and Brian May believes

:14:53.:14:55.

he can get donors involved in his alternative. The rock band Queen

:14:56.:15:03.

have donated money. Politicians from all three political parties were at

:15:04.:15:14.

the launch. On to sport and we are going to talk

:15:15.:15:18.

about Reading football club. Something happening off the pitch.

:15:19.:15:40.

It's a return to the Reading Way. Sir John Madejski has confirmed what

:15:41.:15:43.

fans have long suspected ` the Royals owner Anton Zingarevich is no

:15:44.:15:47.

longer involved in the day to day running of the club. Board chairman,

:15:48.:15:50.

Sir John, also revealed he's looking to sell not just his minority stake

:15:51.:15:54.

in Reading, but also the Russian's share. Joe Campbell reports.

:15:55.:15:56.

Sir John Madejski tonight is master of all he surveys. But the storms

:15:57.:16:00.

outside his apartment are as nothing compared to the troubled waters the

:16:01.:16:03.

club must navigate. The promised investment from new owner Anton

:16:04.:16:06.

Zingarevich and his family just hasn't lived up to expectations. The

:16:07.:16:09.

time he's putting into the club, well, that's now nonexistent. So Sir

:16:10.:16:14.

John is back in charge. We are going to run the club like it

:16:15.:16:19.

used to be run so that is very comforting for everybody concerned.

:16:20.:16:24.

Running football clubs is not an easy thing as people find out.

:16:25.:16:29.

Does that mean they are saying they want to pull back and you are acting

:16:30.:16:35.

as an agent to sell all 100% of the club?

:16:36.:16:40.

I suppose that's probably right. Sir John has spoken out now to

:16:41.:16:43.

reassure fans worried for the future of what they see as their club.

:16:44.:16:49.

What would you say to those who want a resolution.

:16:50.:17:04.

All I can say is they and me both. Oxford United maintained their

:17:05.:17:07.

unbeaten away record in League Two, with a hard`fought point at Bury.

:17:08.:17:10.

The U's went behind in the second half at Gigg Lane, but a first goal

:17:11.:17:14.

for the club from midfielder Josh Ruffels put United back on level

:17:15.:17:18.

terms. Oxford remain in third in the table, in the final automatic

:17:19.:17:20.

promotion place. And Swindon Town can move closer to

:17:21.:17:23.

a trip to Wembley tonight. They face Peterborough in the first leg of

:17:24.:17:26.

their Johnstone's Paint Trophy Southern Final. There's live

:17:27.:17:29.

coverage on BBC Wiltshire. Kick`off slightly earlier than normal at

:17:30.:17:32.

7:15pm. Local rivals Havant Waterlooville

:17:33.:17:35.

and Gosport Borough will face off for a place at Wembley, in the FA

:17:36.:17:39.

Trophy Final. The clubs' grounds are separated by around eight miles as

:17:40.:17:42.

the crow flies, either side of Portsea Island. Havant

:17:43.:17:45.

Waterlooville booked their place in the last four by upsetting Aldershot

:17:46.:17:52.

Town at Westleigh Park. The Shots had Jordan Roberts sent off before

:17:53.:17:55.

half time, and the Hawks took advantage. Dennis Oli got the first,

:17:56.:17:58.

and when Nic Ciardini made it 4`1, Lee Bradbury's side could start to

:17:59.:18:02.

look forward to the juicy local semi final. Brett Williams' penalty was a

:18:03.:18:10.

consolation. We've spoken a lot about snowboarder

:18:11.:18:13.

Billy Morgan over the last few weeks. Well, tomorrow it gets

:18:14.:18:17.

serious for him because his bid for a Winter Olympic medal gets underway

:18:18.:18:20.

in Sochi. Although the opening ceremony doesn't take place until

:18:21.:18:22.

Friday, Southampton's Morgan takes part in qualifying in the slopestyle

:18:23.:18:25.

event tomorrow morning. You can watch live on the BBC Red Button

:18:26.:18:31.

from 6am UK time. From snow to ice, and two of the

:18:32.:18:35.

South's team face off tonight for a place in the Premier League Cup

:18:36.:18:38.

Final. Basingstoke Bison lead Guildford Flames 8`3 from the first

:18:39.:18:41.

leg of their semi. But Guildford have home advantage at the Spectrum

:18:42.:18:45.

Leisure centre this evening. That's underway at 8pm.

:18:46.:18:49.

Motorsport next, and a Hampshire`based team are revving up

:18:50.:18:51.

for the 2014 World Superbikes Championship, which starts later

:18:52.:18:55.

this month in Australia. Today the Crescent`Suzuki team unveiled their

:18:56.:18:58.

new bike. And confidence is high at their New Forest base.

:18:59.:19:13.

They started out in this humble shop but now there's Superbike team are

:19:14.:19:22.

plotting world domination. Some people come in to have their

:19:23.:19:37.

mortar by serviced. You don't have too the and enthusiasts to enjoy the

:19:38.:19:45.

spectacle. Northern Ireland's Eugene Laverty

:19:46.:19:49.

finished second last year and turned on the top of to join

:19:50.:19:55.

Crescent`Suzuki. I feel I have got unfinished

:19:56.:20:01.

business and want to fight for the championship.

:20:02.:20:06.

Another British star steps up after winning the British superbikes title

:20:07.:20:11.

in 2013. It was a natural progression but it

:20:12.:20:15.

is not always the way it goes. Some people aren't as lucky to have this

:20:16.:20:19.

opportunity so I will make the most of it.

:20:20.:20:23.

We have invested heavily in the Raiders and hopefully they can give

:20:24.:20:29.

us the results they deserve. `` invested in the riders.

:20:30.:20:51.

Hopes are high for a good year. Those bikes have to be sold to the

:20:52.:20:57.

public, that's how you qualify. Moto GP or souped up ones.

:20:58.:21:12.

Fascinating. Now one of the most famous Portsmouth warships of World

:21:13.:21:14.

War II is being remembered this month.

:21:15.:21:17.

HMS Penelope was bombed so often and had so many holes she was given the

:21:18.:21:20.

nickname HMS Pepperpot. Eventually she was sunk by a U`Boat off the

:21:21.:21:24.

Italian Coast. Today just seven men who served on HMS Penelope are still

:21:25.:21:28.

alive. Today one of them was given a special presentation to commemorate

:21:29.:21:30.

the 70th anniversary of the sinking. Steve Humphrey reports.

:21:31.:21:32.

These are the extraordinary photographs the resulted in HMS

:21:33.:21:35.

Penelope being given the name HMS Pepperpot. The holes were created by

:21:36.:21:39.

flying shrapnel. The German aircraft seemed to follow

:21:40.:21:44.

us around. The Admiralty stated it was the most bombed ship in World

:21:45.:21:51.

War II. In the Mediterranean Royal Navy ships were coming under almost

:21:52.:21:54.

constant attack. That's all you did, day in and day

:21:55.:21:58.

out, fire at aircraft coming down at you.

:21:59.:22:01.

HMS Penelope's luck ran out in February 1944 when she was sunk by a

:22:02.:22:06.

U`boat. Just under 400 men died, 206 survived, including Norman who spent

:22:07.:22:14.

two and a half hours in the water. If you couldn't swim, you drowned.

:22:15.:22:24.

And then others couldn't keep going. To mark the anniversary of the

:22:25.:22:28.

sinking of the ship, Norman was prevented with some special mementos

:22:29.:22:31.

by John Bush, who served in the Falklands on the most recent ship to

:22:32.:22:37.

be called HMS Penelope. We spent a lot of time in defence

:22:38.:22:40.

watches which is preparation for action in the Falklands. We were

:22:41.:22:46.

doing that for weeks at a time. These guys were doing it for years

:22:47.:22:50.

at a time and in far harsher conditions.

:22:51.:22:54.

Norman is certainly a survivor. He celebrates his 91st birthday on

:22:55.:23:07.

Friday. Let us get on to the weather and

:23:08.:23:13.

Alexis is with us. It has really been incredibly strong winds and

:23:14.:23:16.

lots of rain. Yes we had a cast of 79 mph earlier
