BBC Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to

:00:00.:00:16.

South Today. In tonight's programme: Seven years in jail for the

:00:17.:00:18.

fraudster who conned millionsof pounds out of investors to fund his

:00:19.:00:21.

lavish lifestyle. `he is a despicable man, I do not

:00:22.:00:25.

know how he can walk the earth. I wish there was a punishment that

:00:26.:00:29.

could suit him. Two cyclists die in Berkshire after

:00:30.:00:33.

being hit by a car involved in a police incident.

:00:34.:00:35.

The ongoing battle to stop yet more flooding with further severe weather

:00:36.:00:38.

warnings for the South. Saved for the nation and on display

:00:39.:00:42.

to the public ` the ring which was stopped from heading across the

:00:43.:00:48.

Atlantic. Charming, understated but it had a beauty all of its own. I am

:00:49.:01:07.

glad we never lost it. He pretended to be a trading genius

:01:08.:01:11.

capable of making millions of pounds on behalf of investors, but tonight

:01:12.:01:14.

Benjamin Wilson is starting a seven`year jail term. He ran a

:01:15.:01:17.

company that took in nearly ?22 million. When he was shut down, he

:01:18.:01:24.

owed people around ?17.5 million. It's estimated that only just over

:01:25.:01:30.

?5 million will ever be recovered. It was an elaborate scam. He used

:01:31.:01:34.

people's life savings to fund an extravagant lifestyle. After the

:01:35.:01:37.

authorities caught up with him, he pleaded guilty to fraud, forgery and

:01:38.:01:40.

running an unauthorised collective investment scheme. Here's our

:01:41.:01:42.

business correspondent, Alastair Fee.

:01:43.:01:55.

Arriving at Southwark Crown Court, the man who defrauded hundreds of

:01:56.:02:01.

people out of millions of pounds. 35`year`old Ben Wilson, described by

:02:02.:02:04.

the Financial Conduct Authority as charismatic, charming, manipulative

:02:05.:02:11.

and dishonest. 300 people put money in, none wanted to be identified.

:02:12.:02:18.

This woman lost ?125,000. What's happened is a web of lies, all the

:02:19.:02:23.

way through. It has left us without our retirement pot, shall we say. It

:02:24.:02:27.

means my husband still has to carry on working longer and I do not

:02:28.:02:33.

really know how we will call. We will have a very bad retirement when

:02:34.:02:38.

they planned have a good retirement. The prosecution was brought forward

:02:39.:02:42.

after lifting the lid on this scam in 2010. It has been operating in

:02:43.:02:48.

Dorset since 2003. Ben Wilson was a persuasive character, people were

:02:49.:02:54.

taken in by them. They believed that what he was telling him was a good

:02:55.:02:57.

thing and they thought they were making an investment that is correct

:02:58.:03:00.

for them and their family. The problem is with all of these things

:03:01.:03:06.

it is a house of cards and comes tumbling down and they did not

:03:07.:03:08.

realise that at the time because they were persuaded. With a

:03:09.:03:12.

professional looking brochure, this company did everything to convince

:03:13.:03:18.

people it was legitimate. To investors, Ben Wilson happy to be

:03:19.:03:21.

incredibly successful, the court has heard he claimed to bring in monthly

:03:22.:03:26.

charges of up to 9%. He took and everyone from friends to city

:03:27.:03:32.

dealers, getting up to ?1.5 million into the fund. Sure Investment was a

:03:33.:03:41.

fake scheme. Some to that of Bernie Madoff and the US, the fraudster who

:03:42.:03:46.

earned up to ?40 million ripping people off. It is a type of fraud in

:03:47.:03:51.

which investors receive quick returns from money invested by

:03:52.:03:55.

others. There is never enough money to be everyone back. And Malachi,

:03:56.:04:00.

Wilson only invested ?4 million and lost half of that money. He spent

:04:01.:04:06.

the cash on trips to Las Vegas, resources, fast cars and his biggest

:04:07.:04:10.

parties was a ?4 billion luxury home. His victims are fighting to

:04:11.:04:17.

get back their money. They have been told not to expect more than 31p for

:04:18.:04:25.

every ?1 invested. I think he is a despicable man and when I hear about

:04:26.:04:29.

what he has done to others and the friends of hers and the friends of

:04:30.:04:32.

his parents, and all that sort of thing, I cannot believe it. I do not

:04:33.:04:38.

know how he can walk this earth. I wish there was a punishment that

:04:39.:04:41.

suited him. Sentencing Benjamin Wilson, the QC told the court this

:04:42.:04:48.

was a shameful type of fraud and that the abuse of trust was on a

:04:49.:04:52.

massive scale and would have a lasting effect on his victims.

:04:53.:04:56.

Ben Wilson was jailed for seven years today and banned from being a

:04:57.:04:59.

company director for 15 years. Alastair Fee, BBC South Today.

:05:00.:05:09.

Two cyclists are dead and a man has been arrested after a suspected

:05:10.:05:12.

police pursuit in Berkshire. The crash happened in

:05:13.:05:13.

Purley`on`Thamesnear Reading last night. Thames Valley Police says a

:05:14.:05:17.

police vehicle at the scene was not involved in any collisions. But a

:05:18.:05:21.

police watchdog has been called in to investigate. Nikki Mitchell

:05:22.:05:26.

reports. Two candles burn in memory of the

:05:27.:05:29.

two cyclists killed here. People living nearby all described hearing

:05:30.:05:32.

a massive bang when the crash happened around nine o'clock last

:05:33.:05:35.

night. Many came out to see if they could help, but the police were

:05:36.:05:42.

already here. The police it seemed were chasing

:05:43.:05:47.

the car. As we heard the crash or as my partner's son heard the crash, as

:05:48.:05:51.

we got to the window, the police were already present, so we put two

:05:52.:05:54.

and two together and assumed that the police were chasing the car.

:05:55.:05:58.

The police, who carried out a second search of the scene today, still

:05:59.:06:01.

haven't confirmed or denied that they were pursuing the car. But the

:06:02.:06:07.

whole incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints

:06:08.:06:09.

Commission. The Thames Valley Force has said its officers were

:06:10.:06:12.

responding to reports that someone's safety was threatened at a home

:06:13.:06:15.

along Purley Rise. They then became aware of a black BMW convertible

:06:16.:06:19.

connected to the incident they were responding to.

:06:20.:06:24.

It was the BMW which is thought to have struck this lamp post before

:06:25.:06:28.

hitting two keen cyclists out for an evening ride. Those who knew or

:06:29.:06:32.

loved the men who died laid flowers by the roadside today. John Moorland

:06:33.:06:39.

was 30 and a father of two. Kris Jarvis was 39 and had five children.

:06:40.:06:48.

"That's horrific. We had no idea anybody... We just saw the chap

:06:49.:06:52.

being taken out of the car. He was crying a bit, screaming. That was

:06:53.:06:56.

the only injury we saw. We didn't know there was anybody killed. You

:06:57.:06:58.

know, it's horrible. The 31`year`old driver of the BMW

:06:59.:07:10.

lives here in Purley`on`Thames. His injuries were treated by doctors at

:07:11.:07:13.

the Royal Berkshire Hospital. When he was discharged, he was then

:07:14.:07:17.

arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

:07:18.:07:19.

Downing Street's confirmed letter bombs sent to Army careers offices

:07:20.:07:22.

in the South bore the hallmarks of Northern Ireland`related terrorism.

:07:23.:07:25.

What's been described as a crude but viable device was discovered at the

:07:26.:07:28.

office in St Mary's Butts in Reading on Tuesday. Yesterday one was found

:07:29.:07:32.

in Oxford. Others have been found in Aldershot, Brighton, Slough and

:07:33.:07:34.

Kent. No group has claimed responsibility.

:07:35.:07:41.

A 20`year`old has been sentenced to five years' detention for killing a

:07:42.:07:44.

man who was crushed by a train at Guildford Station last year. Joshua

:07:45.:07:47.

Elphick, who's from the town, punched Ryan Harrison during a

:07:48.:07:50.

drunken brawl, knocking him onto the rails. Two other 20`year`olds were

:07:51.:07:53.

also sentenced for affray for their part in the fight. Rob Powell

:07:54.:07:59.

reports. A Saturday night last year at

:08:00.:08:02.

Guildford Station ` an argument breaks out between two groups of

:08:03.:08:06.

men. Ryan Harrison and Joel Parish ` whose faces have been obscured `

:08:07.:08:10.

have just got on. Joel Parish is hit by Joshua Elphick, who had been

:08:11.:08:14.

getting off at Guildford. Both men are pulled onto the platform where

:08:15.:08:18.

Ryan Harrison is hit. Ryan falls between the train and the platform.

:08:19.:08:21.

Seconds later the train starts moving.

:08:22.:08:29.

Brian Harrison was struck by a moving train and died instantly. The

:08:30.:08:34.

whole family is completely destroyed. What happened will always

:08:35.:08:41.

stay with us. We will never forget. We are trying to rebuild our lives

:08:42.:08:45.

but it is really hard. At Guildford Crown Court Joshua Elphick who had

:08:46.:08:50.

punched Ryan Nelsen eight and earlier pleaded guilty to his

:08:51.:08:54.

manslaughter, was sentenced to five years detention in the youth

:08:55.:08:57.

offenders institution. He will serve half of this term. Two other men,

:08:58.:09:02.

Jack Hardy and Harry Miller, were sentenced to 12 months in the youth

:09:03.:09:06.

offenders institution after being guilty of a free. One other man by

:09:07.:09:11.

the name of Adam was found not guilty. This has been Kos by alcohol

:09:12.:09:18.

fuelled violence and anti`social behaviour. The type of behaviour

:09:19.:09:22.

that is conducted throughout the behaviour of many towns and cities.

:09:23.:09:27.

Nobody realised unfortunately the dangers of behaving in that manner

:09:28.:09:30.

around a really station. Sentencing today, the judge said any sober

:09:31.:09:35.

person would have seen that fighting at the station could have led to

:09:36.:09:39.

someone falling on the tracks. Addressing the defendants he told

:09:40.:09:43.

them you could have walked away and you should have walked away.

:09:44.:09:47.

Campaigners opposed to millions of pounds of council cuts in West

:09:48.:09:50.

Sussex have disrupted a meeting about budget cuts. Protesters from

:09:51.:09:53.

the group Don't Cut Us Out interrupted the meeting by shouting

:09:54.:09:56.

from the public gallery. They were protesting against cuts to adult

:09:57.:09:59.

social care under the budget which sees council tax being frozen.

:10:00.:10:01.

Despite the disturbance, the Conservative`led council approved

:10:02.:10:04.

?55 million worth of cuts in a two`year savings plan.

:10:05.:10:13.

Still to come in this evening's South Today: if you are concerned at

:10:14.:10:19.

all about the weather, stay with us because we will have all the details

:10:20.:10:24.

for the weekend. Tony Husband will be easier with the sport and

:10:25.:10:31.

also... Almost lost to America... The historic ring which has been

:10:32.:10:36.

brought back home. There are three severe weather

:10:37.:10:39.

warnings tonight for areas along the south coast, as the storms show no

:10:40.:10:43.

signs of abating. Lymington and Keyhaven, Christchurch Harbour and

:10:44.:10:46.

Portland have all been put on alert, with a severe warning meaning danger

:10:47.:10:50.

to life. It follows another day of heavy rain, with strong winds now

:10:51.:10:58.

picking up across the region. The Army has been out in Reading helping

:10:59.:11:01.

with sandbags and the Navy has been trying to avert flooding in Romsey.

:11:02.:11:05.

It's from just outside Romsey that we can join our reporter Ben Moore

:11:06.:11:12.

tonight. Ben. Thank you very much, Sally. You can

:11:13.:11:16.

hear that the wind is getting up behind me. We are not of Romsey and

:11:17.:11:23.

under this bridge which the Army have been reinforcing the river of

:11:24.:11:28.

all`day and what that has done is divert the river, as you can see out

:11:29.:11:33.

onto the flood plain. It is a difficult river to manage. It split

:11:34.:11:37.

into four different parts and the idea is that the water can be put

:11:38.:11:40.

onto the flood plain, and to those channels that is divert around the

:11:41.:11:44.

town of Romsey. That's channel that goes through the main part of Romsey

:11:45.:11:48.

will stop flooding and perhaps homes and businesses can be saved. We were

:11:49.:11:55.

on one area to the where businesses are worried you to the closure

:11:56.:11:58.

because of the flooding and they cannot get supplies in or out.

:11:59.:12:03.

Selling cars as nigh`on impossible when abroad as a river. Garage owner

:12:04.:12:09.

Steve Carlyle had only 20 minutes to bring staff and supplies into work

:12:10.:12:13.

this morning. I totally understand that it has to be shut but I feel as

:12:14.:12:17.

a business, you cannot simply stop the business. We have things to do

:12:18.:12:23.

and bills to pay, customers that wants to collect vehicles and I am

:12:24.:12:27.

willing to carry on but they are not letting us. The roadblock here is

:12:28.:12:34.

designed to stay, concrete blocks rather than sandbags banning all

:12:35.:12:38.

traffic. There are 30 to 40 businesses on this trading estate,

:12:39.:12:46.

no deliveries is not an option. If we do not get the order so we do not

:12:47.:12:50.

get paid. We are an independent company and we must remain open to

:12:51.:12:56.

survive. Homes are also being defended from the bloated river. HMS

:12:57.:13:01.

Collingwood was again making the trip inland to sandbagged houses in

:13:02.:13:07.

this area. Just north of year, the river terrace separates into

:13:08.:13:12.

multiple channels. The main channel runs through the centre of town and

:13:13.:13:16.

the others run past the outskirts. More water is being forced into

:13:17.:13:19.

these, hopefully to protect the centre of Romsey. Israel that

:13:20.:13:27.

prevention is better than each year. They are some areas that are free or

:13:28.:13:37.

five feet submerged underwater. I think they have done well. At least

:13:38.:13:42.

there is no shortage of defence 's ear. The Army have been using

:13:43.:13:45.

thousands of sandbags secured from local farms by MP Caroline Dinenage

:13:46.:13:55.

to secure the local river banks. Some places it completely broke down

:13:56.:13:59.

and we have tried to reinforce that. River levels continue to rise as her

:14:00.:14:04.

fears for homes and businesses in this tone. Joining me now is David

:14:05.:14:08.

Robinson from the Environment Agency. How are you managing to

:14:09.:14:15.

shore up the river terrace? It is very difficult and Romsey, we are

:14:16.:14:19.

right on the edge year. There is a huge amount of water coming down the

:14:20.:14:22.

river at the moment and we have had unprecedented volumes of rainfall.

:14:23.:14:27.

We obviously have a lot of rain falling on saturated ground already,

:14:28.:14:31.

so it is a real problem managing the water over the river terrace. What

:14:32.:14:35.

we are doing and Romsey is having a look at how we can manage the flow

:14:36.:14:38.

through the central channel that runs through the town. The Army has

:14:39.:14:42.

been making sure that the river banks are strong as they can be and

:14:43.:14:46.

we will be looking over the next couple of days with our professional

:14:47.:14:51.

partners, the Lukla authorities, with the Army, with the emergency

:14:52.:15:00.

services, is what he can do to try and make things better around the

:15:01.:15:04.

flood plain. You have warnings in place and have some advice. That is

:15:05.:15:09.

correct, three severe warnings are around the coast for Lymington,

:15:10.:15:17.

Christchurch and Portland. That means there is a risk to life, so we

:15:18.:15:22.

are urging people to call our flood plain number. You can get that

:15:23.:15:28.

online. Please stay safe, if you have any concerns, listen to your

:15:29.:15:32.

local radio station or tune into local TV. Thank you very much,

:15:33.:15:39.

David. You can see the river levels continue to rise but hotly there

:15:40.:15:43.

will be some respite over the weekend. `` but hopefully.

:15:44.:15:50.

On the Sunday Politics this weekend we're going to be asking whether we

:15:51.:15:53.

can afford the cost of protecting everywhere that may be at risk of

:15:54.:15:57.

flooding and whether we need to change regulations about where you

:15:58.:16:00.

can and can't build. That's Sunday Politics, on Sunday, on BBC One at

:16:01.:16:02.

11am. Six people have gone on trial

:16:03.:16:05.

accused of murdering a jeweller at Fernhurst in West Sussex.

:16:06.:16:08.

59`year`old Michael Griffiths' body was found tied`up at his home which

:16:09.:16:11.

had been set on fire. It's claimed burglars had tortured Mr Griffiths

:16:12.:16:14.

to try to steal two valuable diamonds. Six people deny murder.

:16:15.:16:21.

Sean Killick reports. It was seven o'clock in the morning

:16:22.:16:26.

on January the 24th last year when a woman noticed smoke coming out of

:16:27.:16:30.

her neighbour's house and West Sussex. She raised the alarm and

:16:31.:16:34.

firefighters found the front door jammed but forced their way inside

:16:35.:16:37.

and discovered behind the door the body of a man. Prosecutor Christine

:16:38.:16:42.

Lang told the jury to the that the man had known X `` legs between the

:16:43.:16:48.

knees and he had not managed to escape the blaze. Once the

:16:49.:16:52.

firefighters had tackled the fire, Ms Lang said they had discovered

:16:53.:16:56.

this was no tragic accident. The man was mad legs and hands had been tied

:16:57.:16:59.

with cables and his head`series and injured. Later examination showed he

:17:00.:17:04.

had been tortured and the fire was started deliberately with petrol.

:17:05.:17:08.

Sussex Police has since launched a murder investigation. The victim was

:17:09.:17:12.

59`year`old Michael Griffiths who had worked at an auction years and

:17:13.:17:17.

was a self`employed jeweller at a workshop at his own home. Ms Lang

:17:18.:17:21.

said that it was common knowledge that Mr Griffiths owned two diamonds

:17:22.:17:26.

worth around ?40,000. The prosecution believe the burglars

:17:27.:17:31.

tortured him to try to get him to open the safe but he did use and it

:17:32.:17:37.

remained locked. Mr Griffiths was killed and his house set on fire to

:17:38.:17:41.

destroy the evidence. Anne Hall seven people are on trial in

:17:42.:17:44.

connection with the death of this man. One woman and five men deny the

:17:45.:17:49.

murder. Six defendants denied the conspiracy to prevent the course of

:17:50.:17:55.

justice. Three of these people have pleaded guilty. The child is

:17:56.:17:59.

expected to last for several weeks. Measures aimed at increasing

:18:00.:18:01.

capacity, reducing congestion and increasing average speeds may be

:18:02.:18:04.

introduced on the M3. The Highways Agency is consulting on the plans

:18:05.:18:08.

which would also see the day time speed limit reduced to 60 miles per

:18:09.:18:12.

hour between Junctions 3 and four ` Lightwater to Farnborough. That's to

:18:13.:18:19.

reduce emissions that are forecast to breach air quality limits. The

:18:20.:18:23.

weather is likely to hit this weekend's sporting programme. Tony's

:18:24.:18:27.

here to look ahead to a big weekend in three different cup competitions,

:18:28.:18:38.

weather permitting. Tony. The situation is very fluid, thank

:18:39.:18:42.

you, Sally. In what's sure to be a wet weekend,

:18:43.:18:46.

we did have interest in three FA competitions across the region with

:18:47.:18:50.

teams in the FA Cup, the FA Trophy and the FA Vase. Southampton hope to

:18:51.:18:53.

keep their cup hopes alive at the Stadium of Light. There's Anne Hall

:18:54.:18:56.

Hampshire tie in the semifinals of the FA Trophy with that first leg

:18:57.:18:58.

between Havant Waterlooville and Gosport Borough. While Sholing are

:18:59.:19:01.

still in the hunt for Wembley, and the last hour their FA vies fifth

:19:02.:19:05.

round tie against Larkhall has been postponed. Southampton travel to

:19:06.:19:09.

Sunderland for the third time this season hoping to win on Wearside for

:19:10.:19:16.

the first time. They are safe in the Premier League so a cup run would be

:19:17.:19:19.

a big bonus for them after making several changes in victories in

:19:20.:19:23.

rounds three and four, while the manager moved closer to a food then

:19:24.:19:30.

say tomorrow? There is a great incentive for us to proceed in this

:19:31.:19:34.

tournament. We will try to do something special and this

:19:35.:19:38.

competition. But we have a difficult day on Saturday against Sunderland.

:19:39.:19:41.

We have not beaten them this season. They have had great form recently

:19:42.:19:46.

and they dominated the first half against us in the last match. So it

:19:47.:19:50.

will be a difficult game but we are desperate to do well in this

:19:51.:19:54.

competition and get you into the next round. That kicks off tomorrow

:19:55.:19:58.

at 12:45pm. You can listen to it on Radio

:19:59.:20:02.

Solent. And the FA Trophy we told you about

:20:03.:20:04.
