A rise in domestic violence, with 14,000 cases investigated in Devon | :00:09. | :00:16.
and Cornwall this year alone. Good evening we'll hear from one victim | :00:16. | :00:19.
as a new campaign highlighting the signs of an abusive relationship is | :00:19. | :00:23.
launched. Also tonight: Help to get a home, but there's criticism of | :00:23. | :00:26.
the latest plans to support young families struggling to afford a | :00:26. | :00:35.
property. It would be nice to have the deps sit, but we're still | :00:35. | :00:40.
facing a situation where a house is going to be many times what we earn. | :00:40. | :00:43.
Graham Dawe has been sacked after 12 years in charge at Plymouth | :00:43. | :00:46.
Albion. We'll be live at their ground. And confused by the weather | :00:46. | :00:54.
- the flowers tricked into blooming because of the mild Autumn. The | :00:54. | :00:57.
number of cases of domestic violence prosecuted in the south | :00:57. | :01:01.
west is up 50% over the past five years. The Crown Prosecution | :01:01. | :01:05.
service says 1,250 cases were taken to court in 2006. Last year, the | :01:05. | :01:13.
number was 1,874. But many allegations don't even get to court. | :01:13. | :01:15.
14,000 have been investigated in Devon and Cornwall alone since | :01:15. | :01:19.
April this year. Agencies working with domestic violence victims are | :01:19. | :01:22.
asking for people to look for warning signs of abusive | :01:22. | :01:24.
relationships, so victims can get help before its too late. We've | :01:24. | :01:28.
been speaking to one woman abused by her husband over a number of | :01:28. | :01:38.
:01:38. | :01:42. | ||
years. She asked us to conceal her identity. He is nice to start with, | :01:42. | :01:46.
very caring, but things changed. He started to get possessive and | :01:46. | :01:51.
wanted to know where I was all of the time. I couldn't go out with | :01:51. | :01:56.
friends without him. I felt like I couldn't breathe. He'd start | :01:56. | :01:59.
arguments about things like stacking the plates. He would shout | :01:59. | :02:05.
and punch the wall and then it escalated. He started punching me. | :02:05. | :02:12.
He would pin me to the wall by my throat. One day he grabbed a knife | :02:12. | :02:17.
and threatened to kill me. As well as the number of prosecutions | :02:17. | :02:19.
rising, the number of people being convicted of abusing their partners | :02:19. | :02:23.
is also on the increase. The Police say that could be because more | :02:23. | :02:25.
victims are coming forward. Now, a campaign's underway to increase | :02:25. | :02:28.
that number further. Earlier I spoke to Spotlight's Alison Chitty | :02:28. | :02:31.
who has been investigating and asked her what the signs were to | :02:31. | :02:39.
look out for. Well obviously this the obvious signs, unexplained | :02:39. | :02:44.
injuries. But controlling relationships can escalate into | :02:44. | :02:47.
abuse. We need to look out for people being controlled by their | :02:48. | :02:53.
partner and maybe a change in circumstances, redundancy, or even | :02:53. | :02:58.
pregnancy. We know that 14% of women who died in pregnancy was | :02:58. | :03:04.
related to domestic abuse. We know pregnancy escalates the Domers is | :03:04. | :03:09.
the abuse situation, due to stress. So it is important for women to | :03:09. | :03:14.
seek the support of their midwives and the community, so we can offer | :03:14. | :03:18.
help. Is there any reason why pregnant women are at risk? Well | :03:18. | :03:22.
there are stress factors in a pregnant circumstances it may be an | :03:22. | :03:27.
unplanned one, or there may be financial worries. Also it changes | :03:27. | :03:32.
the dynamic of a relationship. A partner who wants all the attention | :03:32. | :03:39.
may feel jealous of a new arrival and of course lack of sleep, | :03:39. | :03:43.
financial constrapbtds. It can -- constraint sh it can add up. We are | :03:43. | :03:49.
being asked to look for violence against pets. Its not juths people | :03:49. | :03:55.
-- just people they abuse, they can be violent against animals. It may | :03:55. | :04:00.
be they have serious issues around their temper. But some people will | :04:00. | :04:07.
delay leaving the relationship, because of concerns over a pet. | :04:07. | :04:10.
Often people that have been abused may have strong relationships with | :04:10. | :04:14.
the pets and may be the only loving contact they have. So there are | :04:14. | :04:20.
agency there is a will take your animals in to help you. In that | :04:20. | :04:25.
family was a young girl who was very attached to her dog. And | :04:25. | :04:30.
during the foster period the dog was with us and she did not talk | :04:30. | :04:34.
until the dog went home. And as soon as the dog was reunited with | :04:34. | :04:38.
her, she started talking again and told the dog about her experiences | :04:38. | :04:43.
in the refuge and what had happened. What is being done to get victims | :04:43. | :04:47.
to come forward? The police and the Crown Prosecution Service are | :04:47. | :04:51.
trying to work with victim and want more training with people who come | :04:51. | :04:55.
into contact with victims to encourage not just to deal with the | :04:55. | :04:58.
incident they have been called to, but to seek help to leave that | :04:58. | :05:02.
relationship. Partly this is about trying to spot the signs so people | :05:03. | :05:08.
can be helped. And we must remember these issues with affect men as | :05:08. | :05:13.
well as women and we're being asked to look for abusive relationship | :05:13. | :05:17.
and to get people to intervene so that it can come through courts and | :05:17. | :05:24.
people can feel free to leave. Thank you. The Government has today | :05:24. | :05:27.
announced plans to get more first- time buyers onto the housing ladder | :05:27. | :05:30.
- an enormous challenge here in the South West. It's also committing | :05:30. | :05:32.
money to kick-star the construction industry. Here's our Political | :05:32. | :05:41.
Editor Martyn Oates. This development in Plymouth is bucking | :05:41. | :05:45.
a worrying down ward trend in the construction industry. We're | :05:45. | :05:50.
building the lowest number of new houses since the Second World War. | :05:50. | :05:58.
The economic crisis has made the shortage of affordable housing even | :05:58. | :06:05.
worse. Something Rob, 80 miles away in Penzance is aware of. We lack | :06:05. | :06:10.
the substantial money needed for a mortgage and to save for a deposit. | :06:10. | :06:16.
We don't have money at the end of the month to put forward for a | :06:16. | :06:22.
deposit and I don't think we would many meet the criteria for buying a | :06:22. | :06:27.
house over 100,000. Which I prettyy house in Cornwall. | :06:27. | :06:32.
Government aims to get more of this activity on the way. And | :06:32. | :06:39.
specifically to help people like Rob. The new scheme will address | :06:39. | :06:43.
two problems caused by the recession. One is the issue of | :06:43. | :06:51.
simply getting more houses built. A 400 million pot will be offered to | :06:51. | :06:58.
unblock housing schemes. The other big challenge is getting more | :06:58. | :07:03.
credit flowing. Fast time buyers under the plans can apply for | :07:03. | :07:07.
mortgages worth up to 95% of a home's value w the Government | :07:07. | :07:14.
underwriting part of the risk. Today I'm announcing sup fort -- | :07:14. | :07:20.
support for a scheme to help first time buyers. It will help up to | :07:20. | :07:24.
100,000 people to buy new homes with a 5% deposit. The Government | :07:24. | :07:29.
may want to dig for victory, but is it putting enough in the war chest? | :07:29. | :07:33.
It doesn't seem like they have put a lot into it. And my problem if | :07:33. | :07:38.
that was the case and they bring in these plans and now is the prices | :07:38. | :07:41.
and the difference between wages and the prices of houses and it | :07:41. | :07:48.
does not in any way cover that. is not enough and won't deliver on | :07:48. | :07:52.
anything like the scale we need. And I think the Government will | :07:52. | :07:57.
have to come back. But they have made 127 announcements on housing | :07:57. | :08:02.
and this is another one. One thing is certain - 86 lucky people will | :08:02. | :08:10.
get an unusually elegant affordable home with a passing resemblance to | :08:10. | :08:14.
the Prime Minister's! A 14-year-old girl from Cornwall has admitted an | :08:14. | :08:17.
attack on an Asian shopkeeper was racially motivated. During the | :08:17. | :08:21.
incident at a store in Bodmin, the victim had paint thrown over him | :08:21. | :08:23.
and was verbally abused. Earlier, Bodmin Magistrates' Court remanded | :08:23. | :08:25.
the teenage girl into local authority care for sentencing on | :08:25. | :08:32.
12th December. The RSPCA centre in Cornwall has been shut down after | :08:32. | :08:37.
an outbreak of suspected Parvo virus. The centre, at St Columb, | :08:37. | :08:40.
closed at the weekend. Staff say people shouldn't take animals there | :08:40. | :08:43.
until further notice as the disease - which mainly affects dogs - is | :08:43. | :08:46.
highly contagious. Pet owners are advised to ring the RSPCA helpline | :08:46. | :08:56.
for advice. The disease has been contained OK. All the animals are | :08:56. | :09:01.
at the local vet's. None of the other animals have shown any signs. | :09:01. | :09:06.
So we are confident that we have it contained. South west skydivers | :09:06. | :09:09.
have revealed how they got caught up in an adventure holiday that | :09:09. | :09:12.
descended into disappointment and left creditors owed hundreds of | :09:12. | :09:15.
thousands of pounds. The drama on the expedition to the Himalayas was | :09:15. | :09:18.
captured by a young filmmaker and is featured in tonight's BBC Inside | :09:18. | :09:27.
Out programme. Sam Smith reports. They were promised the adventure of | :09:27. | :09:32.
a lifetime. But the reality was a let down. You say I'm sorry, but | :09:32. | :09:38.
you don't do anything. The trip was billed as sky dive ef rest and a | :09:39. | :09:43.
chance to do extreme sport in an extreme location. But after a two | :09:44. | :09:49.
day trek, miles from the mountain, the mood was turning chilly. If you | :09:49. | :09:53.
pan round you may see Everest approximately 20 miles in that | :09:53. | :10:02.
direction. However, if you look at the brochure we paid for, with a | :10:02. | :10:08.
non-refundable deposit past the rocks on Everest. Steven realised | :10:08. | :10:13.
his film was turning into the holiday video from hell. I thought | :10:13. | :10:18.
we were going to make an adventure film and everyone seemed to be | :10:18. | :10:24.
upset. It is another under- resourced joke of an operation. I | :10:24. | :10:29.
would call it a joke of an operation. Frustration, but there | :10:29. | :10:33.
was only one jump plane when four were expected and two months later | :10:33. | :10:41.
the organiser put his company into voluntary liquidation with debts of | :10:41. | :10:47.
more than 500,000. Dave Wood was among the creditors and never got | :10:48. | :10:51.
his 18,000 fee. There was a lot of things I would have liked to have | :10:51. | :10:58.
done to the guy and I I was very disappointed. We want to ask you | :10:58. | :11:02.
questions. I caught up with Nigel Gifford. He says the trip was a | :11:02. | :11:08.
success and his actions above board. The majority of the customers were | :11:08. | :11:13.
satisfied. And from off the top of my head and it is back in 2008, | :11:13. | :11:17.
there were probably three at the end of the expedition were not | :11:17. | :11:23.
happy. And the DTI has had a report on our company, I wasn't struck off | :11:23. | :11:26.
as a director. Everything I had done in the sishs was the correct | :11:26. | :11:34.
thing to do. -- circumstances. Nigel Gifford plans a return to the | :11:34. | :11:40.
adventure holiday business. Cold comfort for those left out-of- | :11:40. | :11:45.
pocket by the adventure. And you can see the full story in tonight's | :11:45. | :11:49.
Inside Out at 7.30 here on BBC1. A round up of the weekend's sport in | :11:49. | :11:57.
a moment with Natalie. Also Graham Dawe is sacked after 12 and a half | :11:57. | :12:01.
years in charge of Plymouth Albion. And all the fun of Children in Need | :12:01. | :12:05.
- we'll take a look at the highlights of how you raised one of | :12:05. | :12:10.
our best regional totals yet. A memorial service for Norrie | :12:10. | :12:13.
Woodhall - who was the last living link to author Thomas Hardy - has | :12:13. | :12:17.
been held in Dorchester this afternoon. In her final years, | :12:17. | :12:19.
Norrie was instrumental in stopping rare Hardy manuscripts being sold | :12:19. | :12:24.
to America. The actress, artist and writer was cast in a production of | :12:24. | :12:28.
Tess of the D'Urbervilles by the author himself when she was 18. She | :12:28. | :12:38.
:12:38. | :12:40. | ||
died last month aged 105. Simon Clemison reports. In donchster if | :12:40. | :12:45.
you love Thomas hardy, you live it. He was a resident and his works | :12:45. | :12:51.
were inspired by the countryside. His novels are still performled | :12:51. | :12:57.
locally, as they were when Hardy was here to direct them. Although | :12:57. | :13:06.
today's cast owe a lot to the original member of the cast. Norrie | :13:06. | :13:11.
Woodhall knew Thomas Hardy. He didn't criticise anyone. He was | :13:11. | :13:21.
very shy and sensitive. In the 20s the Hardy players disappeared. Is a | :13:21. | :13:27.
But here and his words are still resonating. All thanks to Norrie. | :13:27. | :13:30.
In the original performance of Tess of the D'Urbervilles in 1924, | :13:30. | :13:37.
Norrie only had a couple of words to say, but Hardy wrote her an | :13:37. | :13:43.
extra line. Eight years later she re-created the Hardy players. This | :13:43. | :13:48.
is where they have become the players? This is the original | :13:48. | :13:52.
production... John's father in law 5 his father before him also pe e | :13:52. | :13:59.
performed. He led the memorial service. The original players was | :13:59. | :14:05.
the most famous company in Britain and this brought enormous amount of | :14:06. | :14:10.
interest and attention and recognition of this town. And this | :14:10. | :14:17.
has faded from local people's memories and of course Norrie | :14:17. | :14:22.
revived this. Another Norrie fan also addressed the congregation. | :14:22. | :14:28.
The point about her was that the older she grew, the more this | :14:28. | :14:32.
responsibility of representing Hardy took over. Because the older | :14:32. | :14:36.
she got, the fewer there were who had known him and by the end she | :14:36. | :14:44.
was the only one. The tock of Hardy lasts, but so does the tradition of | :14:44. | :14:54.
:14:54. | :14:58. | ||
acting out the books in h town Time for the sports news now. Some | :14:58. | :15:03.
spectacular goals coming up, but some big news first. | :15:03. | :15:06.
We start this evening with news that has stunned the rugby world. | :15:06. | :15:09.
Plymouth Albion have sacked their chairman of rugby Graham Dawe. It | :15:09. | :15:11.
ends a 12.5-year association between the club and the former | :15:11. | :15:13.
England international. Brent Pilnick is at Albion's Brickfields | :15:13. | :15:23.
Ground and joins us. Why has this happened now? The club are | :15:23. | :15:27.
remaining tight-lipped, but rugby is a results given business and the | :15:27. | :15:31.
results have not been good enough. They have lost six of their last a | :15:31. | :15:35.
matches and offer from the bottom in the championship. They finished | :15:35. | :15:45.
:15:45. | :15:52. | ||
second from last last season and you can see where the problem lies. | :15:52. | :15:55.
And he was well respected by his players, wasn't he? Yes, he was, | :15:55. | :15:58.
I've spoken to a number of players today who played under him during | :15:58. | :16:02.
his 12.5 years here and they all say how he expected the best of | :16:02. | :16:05.
them and inspired them to give their best. Of course he was a | :16:05. | :16:08.
former England international and was the oldest player ever to play | :16:08. | :16:11.
in the Championship when aged 50 he played in a game a couple of | :16:11. | :16:15.
seasons ago. And a familiar face is going to take over from him. Yes, | :16:15. | :16:17.
Albion Chairman Graham Stirling told me this morning that Pete | :16:17. | :16:21.
Drewett will take over. He was in charge of the Exeter Chiefs until | :16:21. | :16:24.
March 2009 when he was sacked after failing to get them into the | :16:24. | :16:31.
Premiership. How hard a job do you think Pete Drewett will have? | :16:31. | :16:36.
harder than at Exeter. There's no new stadium or rich investors to | :16:36. | :16:40.
speak of here at Albion. And there's to that the possibility | :16:40. | :16:43.
that they might not even be the best team in Plymouth. The Cornish | :16:43. | :16:46.
Pirates could be playing their home games in the city next season if | :16:46. | :16:48.
they get promoted to the Premiership after agreeing a deal | :16:49. | :16:52.
to share Home Park with Plymouth Argyle until a new stadium is built | :16:52. | :16:57.
on the other side of the Tamar. Thank you. | :16:58. | :17:01.
It wasn't just Albion who had a bad result this weekend. They may have | :17:01. | :17:06.
lost 34-10 at Nottingham on Friday night. But the Cornish Pirates | :17:06. | :17:09.
suffered only their second defeat of the season. An epic comeback by | :17:09. | :17:19.
But the Exeter Chiefs were on form with a stupendous victory in the | :17:19. | :17:22.
Amlin Cup. To football where there was a feast | :17:22. | :17:32.
:17:32. | :17:43. | ||
of goals in our two local derbies Two local derbies and what you want | :17:43. | :17:50.
to see is some of those. If we can go to the Yeovil and Exeter first - | :17:50. | :17:56.
- game first. A perfect result? This was a really well taken. It | :17:56. | :18:00.
was blasted into the corner of the net. Nothing the keeper can do. | :18:00. | :18:07.
Five minutes gone and City are level. Here goes into the back of | :18:07. | :18:13.
the net. You can see what that meets -- means to the travelling | :18:13. | :18:21.
Grecian army. This penalty saw the goalkeeper go the wrong way. The | :18:21. | :18:27.
Oval hit back after the break with a free header. Absolutely. Let's | :18:27. | :18:32.
move down a League to the Torquay Plymouth Argyle at Derby. One | :18:32. | :18:36.
shopper must would have enjoyed it more. Three-to-one is a good win, | :18:36. | :18:42.
isn't it? When you look at the two sides, it is only the 6th time they | :18:42. | :18:47.
have beaten them. It was opened up in the second half. Look at this | :18:47. | :18:52.
cross. Not enough on the head away. But didn't he take out well? | :18:52. | :18:56.
Blasted it into the corner of the net. He has just signed an | :18:56. | :19:00.
extension to his contract. I'm not sure whether he will still be there | :19:00. | :19:06.
after Jan year. What a tip that is. The goal p -- the goalkeeper will | :19:06. | :19:11.
be a bit disappointed about that. Two goals in two minutes. He missed | :19:11. | :19:15.
his chance of a hat-trick. Danny Stevens went all the way himself to | :19:15. | :19:20.
get this one. After three goals, there was no way back. They did get | :19:20. | :19:26.
a consolation later on. Their new signing loaned from Blackpool | :19:26. | :19:33.
reversed the ball back. Tough times for car Fletcher as a manager. | :19:33. | :19:37.
Absolutely. They have their big test coming up next weekend so a | :19:37. | :19:47.
:19:47. | :19:58. | ||
The sides drew 3-3 recently. Exeter City replay Warsaw on Wednesday. | :19:59. | :20:03.

More than 750,000 has been raised so far in the south west for | :20:30. | :20:33.
Children in Need. That's one of the largest amounts ever pledged on the | :20:33. | :20:36.
night in the region and is part of a record breaking national figure. | :20:36. | :20:39.
Thousands of you joined in the Party for Pudsey at the Eden | :20:39. | :20:42.
Project on Friday. Thanks to everyone who took part and raised | :20:42. | :20:45.
money. Here's how you did it. Welcome to children any 2011. We | :20:45. | :20:49.
are live at the Eden Project. Are you having a good time? -- Children | :20:49. | :20:59.

on rum? No. We are having loads of fun it here, especially when it is | :21:24. | :21:32.

It says on shampoo. A bit chilly here at the ice rink. David, what | :21:52. | :22:00.
do you think you are doing? It is not about you! I can sing, OK? | :22:00. | :22:10.

two, one at! We are in a hospital and we are selling cakes. We've | :22:11. | :22:17.
raced around 5,000 so I'm really pleased with that. -- we have | :22:17. | :22:27.

It was a brilliant night. It never ceases to amaze me what people do | :22:53. | :22:56.
and how much they raised. You think it cannot get any better | :22:56. | :23:03.
every year with the demand. It is incredible people give up. The | :23:03. | :23:05.
total so far for the south west is 784,443.$$NEWLINE Now, we've | :23:05. | :23:14.
experienced unusually mild weather Apparently it's due to high | :23:14. | :23:18.
pressure sitting over Europe and it seems to be having an effect on our | :23:18. | :23:21.
wildlife. The lack of frost has seen leaves stay on trees and even | :23:21. | :23:24.
allowed some exotic plants to flower. We sent John Ayres out to | :23:24. | :23:34.
:23:34. | :23:37. | ||
discover why, for the moment, it's He's leave us tell a story. They | :23:37. | :23:41.
are more green and gold and they are still on the tree. | :23:41. | :23:46.
Trees like this oak are completely... That his fall of leaf | :23:46. | :23:50.
as you can see. It is not even starting to turn. It is just | :23:50. | :23:54.
starting to turn. It is very unusual for this time of year. | :23:54. | :23:57.
Normally we would have had some heavy frost and the leaves would | :23:57. | :24:02.
have been shared -- shed. So far there has been a frost in | :24:02. | :24:05.
the region at all this month. Daytime temperatures have been | :24:05. | :24:10.
around four or five degrees higher than average. And the annual have | :24:10. | :24:14.
observed the effect it has been having: Grace's and while phyla | :24:14. | :24:17.
have continued to grow and some insects have been breeding. There | :24:17. | :24:21.
seems to be a lot more vertebra activity than you would expect at | :24:21. | :24:27.
this time of year. We have more butterflies around. There is a | :24:27. | :24:31.
small tortoise shell just last week so you would not be expecting to | :24:31. | :24:35.
see them at this late in the year. At this college in East Devon, | :24:35. | :24:39.
there is a rare sight. Are more than five metres tall, this Dalya | :24:39. | :24:45.
has flowered for the first time in a years. What normally happens with | :24:45. | :24:51.
this plant is that it struggles to grow. It grows competently from | :24:51. | :24:57.
around April or May. It goes up until this point and then the first | :24:57. | :25:01.
of second frost of the year takes it out completely. The nature on | :25:01. | :25:07.
this Reserve may be considered -- confused by the mild climate. The | :25:07. | :25:11.
hope in that the late onset of winter will not have an adverse | :25:11. | :25:14.
effect. So is the spring-like weather going | :25:14. | :25:24.
to continue? Here's Sarah Farmer A very good evening to you. We have | :25:24. | :25:29.
had some outbreaks of rain today, some have had been on the heavy | :25:29. | :25:32.
side. This week sees an improving picture with brighter conditions | :25:32. | :25:39.
developing as we had the war seemed at a park the week. Today we have | :25:39. | :25:44.
had some rain attacking northwards and there have been some greens and | :25:44. | :25:48.
yellows so some hefty downpours at times. We stick with that tonight | :25:48. | :25:53.
with soggy conditions as that rain gradually tracks east. Overnight | :25:53. | :25:56.
tonight, underneath the cloud, the temperatures will hold out in | :25:56. | :26:01.
double digits, but it is set to be a wet one. A damp start to the day | :26:01. | :26:06.
for tomorrow. That band of rain does work his way East and we | :26:06. | :26:09.
should see some brightening conditions developing as we head | :26:09. | :26:13.
through the remainder of the day. Cornwall sees the best of the | :26:13. | :26:16.
brightness, Devon will eventually see some brightness. Eastern parts | :26:16. | :26:22.
will cling on to cloud and damp conditions. In terms of temperature, | :26:22. | :26:28.
eyes of 13 degrees with a fresher feel to things. How is it looking | :26:28. | :26:32.
for the Channel Islands? Not too badly, a generally cloudy day with | :26:32. | :26:37.
outbreaks of rain later in the day. As for the Isles of Scilly, and | :26:37. | :26:41.
improving picture. We start with some grey and damp conditions, but | :26:41. | :26:45.
we should see some sunny intervals through much of the day. And | :26:45. | :26:51.
improving picture as well on the water. Some rain to start and then | :26:51. | :26:55.
becoming fair. Not too bad if you are venturing out tomorrow. Looking | :26:56. | :27:00.
ahead, for Wednesday, the troublesome weather is sticking to | :27:00. | :27:03.
the north of the country. We have high pressure in charge so fairly | :27:03. | :27:08.
decent conditions to round of the week. Wednesday will see the high- | :27:08. | :27:12.
pressure bringing bright, sunny conditions. A similar story on | :27:12. | :27:17.
Thursday as well: Some more sunny spells to enjoy. Friday, a bit more | :27:17. | :27:27.
