The 79-year-old man who killed his wife because he couldn't cope with

:00:09.:00:19.
:00:19.:00:20.

her dementia is jailed for 12 months. You would have to be

:00:20.:00:24.

desperate and could not see any way out of the situation.

:00:24.:00:27.

Good evening and welcome to Spotlight. More reaction on the

:00:27.:00:29.

sentencing of Malcolm Beardon in a moment. Also tonight...

:00:29.:00:32.

A conman escapes jail - Stephen Sicklemore used a dirty and squalid

:00:32.:00:34.

workshop to make poor quality dentures, conning customers out of

:00:34.:00:39.

hundreds of thousands of pounds. And the new age of the train - our

:00:39.:00:45.

branch lines are the busiest they've ever been.

:00:45.:00:48.

A pensioner from Somerset who 'snapped' and killed his wife of 58

:00:48.:00:52.

years has been jailed for 12 months. Malcolm Beardon from Wellington had

:00:52.:00:54.

been caring for his childhood sweetheart Margaret for over a

:00:54.:00:59.

decade. She'd been suffering from dementia and Exeter Crown Court

:00:59.:01:04.

heard he lost control. Today the judge said "to describe this case

:01:04.:01:07.

as tragic would be a significant understatement." John Maguire

:01:07.:01:15.

reports. They were barely into their

:01:15.:01:19.

twenties when Malcolm and Margaret became man and wife. This was their

:01:19.:01:24.

home in Wellington for 50 years. They brought up a family here. The

:01:24.:01:26.

house is E-mail [email protected] in it. They

:01:26.:01:32.

were devoted to each other and for the past decade he had been there a

:01:33.:01:37.

full-time carer. Dementia took hold. She no longer recognised her home,

:01:37.:01:42.

her family and her husband and last July, he snapped. At a previous

:01:42.:01:46.

hearing the court was told that Malcolm Beardon lost control that

:01:46.:01:51.

night, as he gently strangled his wife. He rang his daughter to tell

:01:51.:01:56.

her he'd murdered Margaret but the prosecution accepted a plea of

:01:56.:02:00.

manslaughter due to be exceptional circumstances. In passing sentence

:02:00.:02:05.

the judge said that to describe the case as tragic would be a

:02:05.:02:09.

significant understatement. The principle of the sanctity of human

:02:09.:02:12.

life would be undermined, he said, if a custodial sentence wasn't

:02:12.:02:19.

passed. He ordered Mr Beardon to serve 12 months in jail. He had

:02:19.:02:24.

always insisted that he could cope, rejecting offers of help, but

:02:24.:02:28.

clearly he couldn't. Tonight, carers are being urged not to

:02:28.:02:33.

suffer in silence. The issue is that most people don't identify

:02:33.:02:38.

themselves as carers, because why wouldn't you care for you family?

:02:38.:02:43.

We want more people to identify themselves to get the support they

:02:43.:02:48.

need, to stop them coming into crisis situations. Malcolm

:02:48.:02:52.

Beardon's family have supported him throughout and were in court again

:02:52.:02:56.

today. They have lost their mother and now their father is in prison

:02:56.:03:00.

for something the court heard was done in a moment without malice,

:03:00.:03:08.

without motive, but that will haunt Mr Beardon for the rest of his days.

:03:08.:03:11.

A man condemned as "a dental charlatan" by a judge has been

:03:11.:03:13.

given a suspended jail sentence after conning scores of people

:03:13.:03:16.

across Devon and Cornwall out of thousands of pounds for shoddy

:03:16.:03:22.

dentures made in a squalid laundry room at his home. Stephen

:03:22.:03:25.

Sicklemore, who's from Dawlish, set up a company called The Denture

:03:25.:03:28.

Clinic. He took impressions and made sets of teeth, despite being

:03:28.:03:32.

unqualified to carry out the highly skilled work. Sicklemore is thought

:03:32.:03:38.

to have made around 200,000 from his crimes. He was today given a

:03:38.:03:42.

nine month jail sentence, suspended for two years. Our home affairs

:03:42.:03:51.

correspondent Simon Hall reports. Modern dentures are made with great

:03:51.:03:55.

processing. Measurements are taken to fractions of a millimetre. High-

:03:55.:03:59.

quality materials like titanium and specially designed plastics are

:03:59.:04:03.

used to make them as comfortable, hard-wearing and natural-looking as

:04:03.:04:08.

possible. This is how it should be done. This is how it shouldn't.

:04:08.:04:12.

Dentures made from poor-quality materials in the dirty surroundings

:04:12.:04:17.

of a laundry room in the back of a house. This was The Denture Clinic,

:04:17.:04:22.

run from his home by Stephen Sicklemore. He can't almost 200

people. We were appalled. This type of activity is strictly controlled

:04:28.:04:32.

and regulated as you would expect, and we did not expect to find

:04:32.:04:37.

anything like this. This was not a proper laboratory and was not

:04:37.:04:41.

summer where people should have been preparing things to go in

:04:41.:04:45.

people's minds. Laura was one of his victims. She showed me the

:04:45.:04:49.

dentures he made. They were so shoddy, she wore them only once.

:04:49.:04:56.

They cost more than 700. I feel quite violated, actually. He

:04:56.:05:02.

betrayed my trust, he took money when he shouldn't have done and I'm

:05:02.:05:07.

quite sad. Stephen Sicklemore advertised across Devon and

:05:07.:05:10.

Cornwall and targeted older and vulnerable people, those who

:05:10.:05:15.

thought would be less likely to complain. The dangers he made would

:05:15.:05:18.

often chip, crack and break soon after being warned. Fashion

:05:18.:05:28.

:05:28.:05:32.

register and reputable rental company. He is also a member of the

:05:33.:05:39.

General Dental Council. It helped to prosecute Stephen Sicklemore.

:05:39.:05:44.

was the DIY dentistry. It was in a broom in his house. There was no

:05:44.:05:50.

health and safety, things were not clean. It was not the sort of

:05:50.:05:55.

atmosphere you would want with a hi-tech technology that we do. It

:05:55.:06:00.

is not the right arms for to do that in. Properly qualified

:06:00.:06:03.

dentists and technicians are registered with the General Dental

:06:03.:06:08.

Council. The advice to avoid fraudsters is check a practitioner

:06:08.:06:13.

with my counsel before going ahead with any treatment. -- with the

:06:13.:06:20.

council. Peter Greene from Trading Standards

:06:20.:06:24.

is now in our Exeter Studio to give us some more details. How did the

:06:24.:06:30.

Stephen Sicklemore set this up? had some training. He had served an

:06:30.:06:32.

apprenticeship as a dental technician but he didn't have the

:06:32.:06:38.

legal qualifications to fit dentures or make them. Why did he

:06:38.:06:43.

come to your attention? He came to our attention because the volume of

:06:43.:06:49.

complaints. As early as 2008, we were getting complaints about his

:06:49.:06:53.

operations and together with the General Dental Council we wrote to

:06:53.:06:57.

him, advising him that what he was doing was illegal, but he ignored

:06:57.:07:01.

our advice and continued and that is why he was in court today.

:07:01.:07:07.

these people need regular checks? The industry is regulated in terms

:07:07.:07:12.

of dentistry being regulated and dentists are checked. Their

:07:12.:07:15.

activities are monitored. Because Stephen Sicklemore was not

:07:15.:07:19.

registered with the GPCE and did not appear on a list of

:07:19.:07:23.

practitioners, he would not have been inspected. It was only three

:07:23.:07:27.

chance that we were able to act on intelligence and identify him and

:07:27.:07:31.

were able to take action. Could someone else the operating like

:07:31.:07:35.

this at the moment? A quite possible. If anybody does suspect

:07:35.:07:41.

anyone providing medical services for them is not registered or

:07:41.:07:47.

qualified, let us know. He received a suspended jail sentence, what is

:07:47.:07:50.

your reaction? Should he continue, he is likely to be brought back

:07:50.:07:57.

before the court and could come -- go to prison, which would give

:07:57.:08:03.

people reassurance. Effective returning us. -- thank you for

:08:03.:08:05.

joining us. An elderly couple from Devon say

:08:05.:08:08.

they are lucky to be alive after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning

:08:08.:08:11.

in their home. Stephen Blackwell raised the alarm after finding his

:08:11.:08:14.

wife unconscious in bed when the invisible gas escaped from their

:08:14.:08:18.

old central heating boiler. Spotlight's Scott Bingham reports.

:08:18.:08:26.

Evelyn Blackwell had their new boiler installed after the old one

:08:26.:08:29.

litre carbon monoxide, rendering her unconscious. She is relieved to

:08:29.:08:36.

be alive, fax to a halt and's vigilance. -- thanks to her

:08:36.:08:39.

husband's vigilant. They is nothing to fear, something to smell,

:08:39.:08:43.

nothing to see. You do not feel anything in your nose or throat so

:08:43.:08:48.

I had no idea that anything had happened to me, nothing at all.

:08:48.:08:52.

Thousands of home owners in the South West rely on central heating

:08:52.:08:55.

in the winter months. Carbon monoxide poisoning incidents are

:08:55.:09:01.

rare but there is concern people are not aware of the hazards.

:09:01.:09:07.

Because his art faulty gas appliances and Candide -- because

:09:07.:09:13.

his calm need to gases, meat, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning and

:09:13.:09:19.

that is the silent killer. Blackwells said this has made them

:09:19.:09:27.

more aware of possible dangers. Branch railway lines in the South

:09:27.:09:30.

West are being used by more people than at any point in their history.

:09:30.:09:33.

It's been yet another record- breaking year for passenger numbers.

:09:33.:09:35.

The six community rail lines in Devon and Cornwall have seen

:09:35.:09:38.

numbers up 15% on the year before. Spotlight's business correspondent

:09:38.:09:48.
:09:48.:09:50.

reports. The line to Barnstaple is what is

:09:50.:09:54.

typical of what is happening on our branch lines. 2011 was the first

:09:54.:09:58.

time it had transported more than half a million people in a year.

:09:58.:10:02.

This is the outcome of a lot of hard work, according to one of the

:10:02.:10:06.

main railway watchdogs. It is continuing improvement in the

:10:06.:10:12.

service. There have been increases in frequency and a liability --

:10:12.:10:20.

reliability and a lot of promotion going on. People are being made

:10:20.:10:24.

aware of how useful these lines are for travel. Were we were on one of

:10:24.:10:30.

the most heavily used trains from Exeter to Barnstaple. This is not

:10:30.:10:34.

always such an easy ride, passengers said, but on the whole,

:10:34.:10:39.

today's branch lines are a success story. It takes cars away from the

:10:40.:10:44.

roads. They need to be about adding another carriage, it would make a

:10:44.:10:48.

huge difference. The two coaches mean that there are always people

:10:48.:10:52.

standing. Be is it good or bad if people are using them in these

:10:52.:10:56.

numbers? It is a good thing but there would be more if it was

:10:56.:11:02.

easier. If you pay for a ticket for a seat, you need to have a seat.

:11:02.:11:06.

They ease numbers mark a huge turnaround from the on certain days

:11:06.:11:13.

of 2004, when it transferred secretary -- the Transport

:11:13.:11:17.

Secretary said he could not guarantee the future of branch

:11:17.:11:22.

lines. He famously said that we could not carry on karting fresh

:11:22.:11:31.

air around the country. What has changed? The costs of driving and

:11:31.:11:35.

parking have rocketed. Commuting by car into a regional centres can

:11:35.:11:41.

work out as much a seven times as expensive as train travel. Trains

:11:41.:11:46.

are busier than they have ever been and we are looking at working with

:11:46.:11:49.

Devon and Cornwall councils to see how we can improve these lines

:11:49.:11:55.

further. The challenge now is whether the region can find enough

:11:55.:12:01.

extra carriages to stop crowded service is becoming overcrowded. --

:12:01.:12:03.

services. Anti-capitalist protesters have

:12:03.:12:06.

today refused to stop camping outside Exeter Cathedral. The

:12:06.:12:09.

Cathedral authorities told the protestors yesterday they had to

:12:09.:12:14.

leave. In a statement today, Occupy Exeter said the request to move

:12:14.:12:18.

negated the essence of their movement. They have been on the

:12:18.:12:24.

green since November. The police say a body has been

:12:24.:12:29.

found on Tolcarne Beach in Newquay. The police have contacted the

:12:29.:12:32.

family of missing surfer Oliver Doy, but no identification has taken

:12:32.:12:37.

place and they are continuing with their enquiries.

:12:37.:12:41.

A company where a man was crushed to death has been fined by the

:12:41.:12:43.

Health and Safety Executive for failing to provide adequate safety

:12:43.:12:50.

measures. Sean O'Brien was killed by the plates of a machine used to

:12:50.:12:58.

make plastic bullets. He was working at a factory.

:12:58.:13:03.

There is a new programme starting this weekend to round up the

:13:03.:13:08.

region's political developments. Sunday Politics is prevented --

:13:08.:13:14.

presented by our political editor. It is a sister programme to be

:13:14.:13:21.

Daily Politics. We will have to guests with us throughout the

:13:21.:13:26.

programme who will comment on all the issues. We will finish with a

:13:26.:13:34.

round-up of the political week in the South West in 60 seconds.

:13:34.:13:39.

And public sector pay is one of the issues you are kicking off with?

:13:39.:13:43.

Yes, we bum Look at government plans to introduce local pay rates,

:13:43.:13:51.

announced last autumn. -- and we will look. At the moment, public

:13:51.:13:59.

sector pay is set nationally, which means that there are big gaps

:13:59.:14:05.

between public and private sector pay it. In the South West, people

:14:05.:14:09.

pay significantly more than in a private sector. The government says

:14:09.:14:13.

that damages competitiveness in the private sector and the unions and a

:14:13.:14:16.

business leader has said that if changes are made to bring public

:14:16.:14:25.

sector pay down, it could have a devastating effect on the economy.

:14:25.:14:35.

A rare bird has been spotted in Devon. The glossy ibis has turned

:14:35.:14:40.

up again on marshes at Exminster near Exeter. It is not the first on

:14:40.:14:43.

the rare bird has been seen there, and twitchers are out in force to

:14:43.:14:52.

catch a glimpse. Normally, it is lapwings and peel

:14:52.:14:56.

making a dramatic sight on these marshes. But today, on a quiet

:14:56.:15:01.

corner of the landscape, overlooked by the main railway line to London

:15:01.:15:07.

and the M5, a glossy ibis was looking for lunch. It has been

:15:07.:15:11.

attracting interest from people who have lenses trained on it every

:15:11.:15:18.

move. I put the photographs on Facebook, and somebody asked me

:15:18.:15:24.

where they came from, so of course, I had to look it up in the book. I

:15:24.:15:30.

see they come from south-east Europe, around that area, they

:15:30.:15:37.

winter in tropical Africa, although you can find a few around the

:15:37.:15:42.

Mediterranean. I was very surprised to see one here. Even passers-by

:15:42.:15:46.

just out for a walk were managing to capture the glossy ibis on

:15:46.:15:53.

camera. I would have liked to have got the beat! The horrors be beat

:15:53.:15:56.

say there is so much interest in the glossy ibis, it is gently

:15:56.:16:01.

reminding everyone who comes to have a look to stick to the

:16:01.:16:07.

property market but paths -- the RSPB. But why it are they committed

:16:07.:16:14.

Devon? We cannot say it is the same bird, but it goes to show how great

:16:14.:16:18.

the estuary is, there is an abundance of food, the climate is

:16:18.:16:21.

suitable for it, so they come back because there are such great

:16:21.:16:27.

habitat here. It remains a mystery if this is the same bird we filmed

:16:27.:16:31.

in 2004. But this is certainly an added attraction for those enjoying

:16:31.:16:37.

the marshes. We were just saying how good it is

:16:37.:16:41.

to get such close-up pictures! Normally when you gets a rare bird,

:16:41.:16:48.

it is a dot on the horizon. Time for a look at the weekend's sport.

:16:48.:16:53.

The Exeter Chiefs are in Italy this evening ahead of Tamara's game

:16:53.:16:58.

against group strugglers Cavalieri Prato in the Amlin Cup. The Chiefs

:16:58.:17:03.

beat them by 68-0 at Sandy Park in October, and now hope they can

:17:03.:17:06.

complete the double ahead of their clash against Perpignan on next

:17:06.:17:11.

week. In the championship, the Cornish

:17:11.:17:15.

Pirates will take on bottom-placed Esher tomorrow, without another of

:17:15.:17:19.

their key players. Rob and away has been ruled out for 10 weeks due to

:17:19.:17:25.

a neck injury. -- rock and away. For Plymouth Albion, it is another

:17:25.:17:29.

tough encounter for current head coach at Nat Saumi as he prepares

:17:29.:17:32.

his side to face Leeds. Plymouth Argyle legend Paul Wotton

:17:32.:17:37.

is expected to be on the team-sheet at Higham Park for Tamara's game

:17:37.:17:41.

against Burton Albion. He has rejoined the Pilgrims after being

:17:41.:17:47.

released by it Yeovil Town. The Plymouth born midfielder captained

:17:47.:17:53.

are got a two promotions and made more than 400 appearances for the

:17:53.:17:56.

Pilgrims before being shown the door by Paul Sturrock.

:17:56.:18:00.

Elsewhere, Exeter City are hoping they can emulate last weekend's win

:18:00.:18:06.

at Chesterfield as they host Hartlepool United. They had not won

:18:06.:18:11.

since the end of November before breaking their dry spell. Gary

:18:11.:18:15.

Dobson welcomes Tranmere Rovers 2 she wish Park, and Torquay had to

:18:15.:18:19.

Macclesfield to play their first match for 12 days. Their manager

:18:19.:18:23.

has used the break to allow his players to recover after three

:18:23.:18:27.

games in eight days over the festive period.

:18:27.:18:30.

It is aged huge weekend for the Plymouth Raiders as they had to

:18:30.:18:34.

Birmingham to take on the Newcastle Eagles on Sunday in the BBL Cup

:18:34.:18:39.

Final. The Eagles go into the game as favourites having lost just one

:18:39.:18:43.

league game all season. Our correspondent has been to see how

:18:43.:18:48.

the readers are planning an upset. The Plymouth Raiders face their

:18:48.:18:52.

biggest game of the season as they take on the Newcastle Eagles in the

:18:52.:18:56.

Cup final. You are one of the forwards. Looking forward to the

:18:56.:19:01.

game? Very much, hopefully we will get a win. Do you think I'm any

:19:01.:19:10.

good at this board, should I have a go? Yes! Let's see what I can do!

:19:10.:19:15.

Also joining me is one of the new players. Your first Cup final with

:19:15.:19:19.

the Plymouth Raiders. You played Newcastle earlier in the season and

:19:19.:19:23.

got beaten. What did you learn from that game? We learnt that we cannot

:19:23.:19:27.

come out sluggish at the beginning of the game. We have to focus

:19:27.:19:32.

throughout the entire game, we have been working a lot on our defence

:19:32.:19:36.

and offence to get ready for this game. It is a new-look team, have

:19:36.:19:40.

you gelled together? At this point, definitely, we are playing very

:19:40.:19:45.

well, and we are very confident. think we have got great personnel

:19:45.:19:50.

here. We have players who were willing to put aside their

:19:50.:19:53.

individual accolades, not interested in points, just winning

:19:53.:20:02.

their last games. At the moment will we are very versatile team.

:20:02.:20:06.

have seen the other guys do some slam dunks, it cannot be that

:20:06.:20:16.
:20:16.:20:29.

There is full commentary on the Before I go, one last thing to

:20:29.:20:34.

mention is that the Silverton point to point will be taking place at

:20:34.:20:37.

Black Forest Lodge near Exeter on Sunday, the first race starts at

:20:37.:20:42.

midday. Do you think he is still hanging

:20:42.:20:47.

there?! This is the time of year when many

:20:47.:20:50.

of us try to get back into shape after the excesses of the festive

:20:50.:20:56.

period. One new way of doing this is proving a big hit in South Devon.

:20:56.:21:02.

It combines exercise with a trip back to our childhood. If he still

:21:02.:21:07.

has any puff left, because he has been doing this for an hour, let's

:21:07.:21:12.

go live to one of the sessions, and our reporter. He has given up

:21:12.:21:18.

already, by the look of it! stopped briefly to show you. I had

:21:18.:21:24.

one of these when I was a kid, we used to play show jumping. But now,

:21:24.:21:31.

it is turning into exercise. There is a class going on hearing Marldon.

:21:31.:21:36.

Debbie, you start of this class, how did the idea come around? --

you started this class. It is a dream come true for me. I had a

:21:44.:21:50.

space hopper when I was little, we did shows, we played on them all

:21:50.:21:56.

summer. I thought it was great exercise. I am a fitness instructor.

:21:57.:22:01.

How to help people get it? Can you see the sweat? You have had a go

:22:01.:22:09.

yourself the! Really good cardia, lots of work on the legs. So yes,

:22:09.:22:18.

it is an all rounder... Not much on the arms. It is proving popular.

:22:18.:22:22.

These girls love it. I have had so many requests to do it in other

:22:22.:22:29.

places. You are going to put Mr do it as well? A yes, so new dance

studios in Totnes. I'm available for hire! Let go and look at one of

:22:35.:22:42.

the people who have been doing it. -- let's go. It is just really good

:22:42.:22:51.

fun. How does it help keep you fit? It helps keep my legs quite bit,

:22:51.:22:55.

and it helps for cardiovascular. looks like it is something people

:22:55.:23:01.

enjoy doing, which is important for exercise. It is really fun. I have

:23:01.:23:05.

been to everyone, and it is not exactly the same each time. I have

:23:05.:23:11.

been having a bit of ago, I think I have a bit of work to do, so I will

:23:11.:23:18.

crack on. -- a bit over a dove. Some of them were taking off

:23:18.:23:28.
:23:28.:23:30.

completely! That is one way to keep warm in

:23:30.:23:34.

this weather! We have some cold weather coming our way this weekend.

:23:34.:23:38.

A frost is reforming, and a lot of clear skies overnight. The frost

:23:38.:23:44.

will stay with us that the next two or three nights, daytime, also,

:23:44.:23:51.

some sunshine. But it is a dry story through Saturday and Sunday.

:23:51.:23:57.

Quite a bit of cloud floating around the UK, but it is thin cloud.

:23:57.:24:06.

It will be a round again tomorrow, but then it should be a lot of fine

:24:06.:24:11.

weather, but the high pressure is well and truly in charge. It

:24:11.:24:16.

weakens and little bit by lunchtime on Sunday, allowing a weather front

:24:16.:24:24.

to come in to the far west of Cornwall. For the rest of us, 18

:24:24.:24:28.

breeze from the south-east, making it feel decidedly cold. -- a keen

:24:28.:24:37.

breeze. There is that satellite picture in more detail. The fog,

:24:37.:24:42.

last to clear from Yeovilton, now it is reforming again. But a lot of

:24:42.:24:49.

blue sky today. This is the marshes, where our cameraman was enjoying

:24:49.:24:54.

some beautiful blue sky, and if we have heard recently, there is a lot

:24:55.:25:03.

of what life on those marshes. -- wildlife. The surf is up in

:25:03.:25:08.

Cornwall, not big waves, but usable way this. But hardly a breath of

:25:08.:25:13.

wind, a pleasant day for a stroll along the beach and to enjoy some

:25:13.:25:18.

winter sunshine. Good visibility, as well. Inland, more of the mist

:25:18.:25:23.

and fog of forming, developing most likely into Somerset and Dorset.

:25:23.:25:31.

Overnight temperatures, dropping fairly rapidly, continuing to fall.

:25:31.:25:34.

It will be probably the coldest night we have seen so far this

:25:34.:25:41.

winter. Tomorrow, some bands of cloud across the English Channel,

:25:41.:25:46.

some high-level cloud, making the sunshine easy, but it is a dry day,

:25:46.:25:50.

and the breeze is developing, preventing too much mist and fog

:25:51.:25:58.

forming tomorrow night. The south- east wind will make it feel cold.

:25:58.:26:03.

With the wind chill, it will feel close to freezing. So you will need

:26:03.:26:07.

to keep yourself warm. Tomorrow afternoon, if you fancy finding out

:26:07.:26:13.

more about this star-gazing event, my colleague will be at the big

:26:13.:26:19.

screen in Plymouth from 11am until 4pm, she has some expert with her

:26:19.:26:29.
:26:29.:26:43.

as well. -- some experts. The Still some surf around, up to three

:26:43.:26:46.

feet of clean on the north coast, depending which way the beach is,

:26:46.:26:56.
:26:56.:27:06.

The outlook, on Sunday, we see more sun coming into Cornwall, for the

:27:06.:27:12.

rest of us, a frosty start and he mainly fine day. A fine day on

:27:12.:27:19.

Monday, with lighter wind, perhaps a bit warmer, but not by much.
