Ready to fly the Olympic flame to Cornwall as police here prepare for

:00:15.:00:20.

their biggest security operation since the eclipse. Could evening.

:00:20.:00:24.

Hundreds of officers will be involved in a shrink the flames

:00:24.:00:30.

journey across the region goes smoothly. Also... Day one of the

:00:30.:00:34.

Devon County Show, there has been an announcement of millions of

:00:34.:00:38.

pounds of financial help for farmers on Dartmoor. And we will

:00:38.:00:42.

bring you a real flavour of this fabulous show, where it appears

:00:42.:00:50.

record numbers have come through the gates. The biggest policing

:00:50.:00:54.

operation in more than a decade is about to get underway in the south

:00:54.:00:57.

west, ready for the arrival of the Olympic flame. Hundreds of officers

:00:57.:01:00.

have been drafted in with a series of high-tech control centres set up

:01:00.:01:02.

along the torch's route. The operation is the culmination of

:01:03.:01:05.

almost a year's planning. It's been compared with that used for the

:01:06.:01:09.

total eclipse of 1999. Simon Hall has been given access to the

:01:09.:01:12.

preparations for this weekend as the torch passes through Cornwall

:01:12.:01:18.

and Devon. It's not just a focus upon flames which link the total

:01:18.:01:21.

eclipse and the operation to police the passage of the Olympic torch

:01:21.:01:27.

through Devon and Cornwall. The police say they're similar in scale,

:01:27.:01:31.

in terms of the planning and resources required. The major

:01:32.:01:34.

incident plan, or Silver Command, will run over the whole of this

:01:35.:01:39.

weekend. It'll be coordinated from three centres as the flame makes

:01:39.:01:42.

its journey. County Hall in Truro, Crownhill Police Station in

:01:42.:01:47.

Plymouth and Heavitree Road Police Station in Exeter. 200 officers

:01:47.:01:52.

will be drafted in. The police will have their helicopter and armed

:01:52.:01:55.

units on standby, although there's no intelligence of any potential

:01:55.:02:02.

attack and the focus will be on low-key, community policing. It is

:02:02.:02:06.

certainly about being prepared and having resources available but it

:02:06.:02:10.

is about working with committees. There are people holding and

:02:10.:02:13.

running with the torch and this is the biggest thing that has happened

:02:13.:02:17.

for them and my job is to make sure that moment of glory can really

:02:17.:02:20.

shine and they can enjoy the occasion without being frustrated

:02:20.:02:25.

with somebody with as single purpose in mind. This is the

:02:25.:02:30.

command centre. At the weekend all the seats will be full, emergency

:02:30.:02:34.

services, council officials and others monitoring the progress of

:02:34.:02:37.

the Olympic flame and ready to react in seconds, should there be

:02:37.:02:40.

any problems. It's the culmination of nine months of planning, the

:02:40.:02:46.

setting up of a taskforce and the involvement of around 500 people.

:02:46.:02:52.

For me, it is amazing, absolutely fantastic and I really hope it is a

:02:52.:02:57.

wonderful day for everybody. It is a wonderful experience for me and

:02:57.:03:01.

everybody who has been working with me and it really is going to be a

:03:01.:03:07.

superb, one of opportunity. It is a privilege to be able to participate

:03:07.:03:14.

in the planning. Yes, very pleased to be involved. The British

:03:14.:03:17.

delegation has taken custody of the Olympic flame. It'll arrive in

:03:17.:03:20.

Cornwall tomorrow. That gives the south west a unique opportunity on

:03:20.:03:24.

the world stage. But it also presents a unique pressure for

:03:24.:03:32.

those tasked with making sure the event runs smoothly. The Olympic

:03:32.:03:35.

organising committee has had an 11th hour change of heart over the

:03:35.:03:43.

way in which the torch will cross the Tamar Bridge. The flame was due

:03:43.:03:47.

to be carried across the bridge in a vehicle rather than in the hands

:03:47.:03:49.

of a torchbearer. Now, LOCOG has decided to bow to local pressure

:03:49.:03:52.

after a report on BBC Radio Cornwall and Spotlight and allow

:03:52.:03:58.

the runners to carry it across the bridge. A teenager from Cornwall

:03:58.:04:01.

has been talking about her pride at being chosen to represent Cornwall

:04:01.:04:03.

at the Olympic Torch handover ceremony in Athens. Georgia Higgs,

:04:03.:04:06.

who's 15 and from Helston College, is one of five young people who

:04:06.:04:09.

have joined dignitaries including the Princess Royal and Sebastian

:04:09.:04:12.

Coe and the London 2012 Ambassador, David Beckham, at the ceremony in

:04:12.:04:14.

Greece. They're due to fly from Athens to RNAS Culdrose tomorrow

:04:14.:04:24.
:04:24.:04:24.

evening. A decision on her to be chosen and be here, it is amazing.

:04:25.:04:31.

It is surreal. I just thought, I'll have to go to RNAS Culdrose. I was

:04:31.:04:37.

overwhelmed. There will be full coverage of the build-up to the

:04:37.:04:39.

arrival at RNAS Culdrose tomorrow. In the morning, BBC Radio

:04:39.:04:42.

Cornwall's breakfast programme is coming live from there and there's

:04:42.:04:45.

a special programme on BBC local radio across the region in the

:04:45.:04:47.

evening. Spotlight will be live from Culdrose at 6.30pm tomorrow

:04:47.:04:53.

night and you can follow the news on Twitter, Facebook, and online. A

:04:53.:04:55.

report by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch says the

:04:55.:04:58.

captain of a giant cargo ship which hit the West Cornwall coast last

:04:58.:05:00.

summer was sounding increasingly intoxicated before falling asleep

:05:00.:05:07.

on the bridge. The 9,000 ton Karin Schepers crossed the Land's End

:05:07.:05:10.

traffic separation zone in a straight line at speed before

:05:10.:05:19.

grounding near Pendeen lighthouse. She was undamaged and re-floated.

:05:19.:05:24.

The report says the owners have reviewed safety. A former Sea

:05:24.:05:27.

Harrier pilot who flew in the Falklands War 30 years ago has said

:05:27.:05:30.

the Argentinians would be mad to consider another invasion. In the

:05:30.:05:33.

third of our special series on the anniversary of the Falklands, Simon

:05:33.:05:36.

Hargreaves told the BBC's Clinton Rogers that the islands are now

:05:36.:05:46.
:05:46.:05:48.

much better defended. Looking back, quite excited. Looking forward to

:05:48.:05:53.

it in many ways. That is an absurd thing to say, but am not sure we

:05:53.:06:00.

ever really thought it was going to get as serious. Simon Hargreaves is

:06:00.:06:07.

unique. The only Falklands Sea Harrier pilot still flying jets.

:06:07.:06:12.

Ironically, Israel today actually harks back to the Falklands War 30

:06:12.:06:20.

years ago. One of our primary roles is to use these as Exocet missiles

:06:20.:06:26.

to train NATO warships during their flight Officer Sea Training periods.

:06:26.:06:31.

Clearly, that was a big thing in the Falklands and that is still a

:06:31.:06:36.

very potent threat. So, we get lodged and pretend to be missiles

:06:36.:06:40.

while going as fast as we can and as low as we can. Two or three

:06:40.:06:46.

times a week, which is a very good way to make a living! Time for the

:06:47.:06:53.

Harriers to join the offence of... They were the iconic aircraft of

:06:53.:06:58.

the Falklands war. 30 years ago, San'a Hargreaves was one of the

:06:58.:07:03.

pilots from the naval air base who helped give the British air

:07:03.:07:10.

supremacy in the war. But it was not without cost. Only a few days

:07:10.:07:17.

into the fighting, a pilot was shot down. Argentinian television showed

:07:17.:07:25.

pictures of the wreckage. And then... The funeral of a pilot,

:07:25.:07:33.

Lieutenant Nick Taylor. For Simon Hargreaves, that was really the

:07:33.:07:43.
:07:43.:07:44.

point at which he realised the war was real. Three days later, Ted was

:07:44.:07:48.

one of the Air Force exchange guys and he said that make did not make

:07:48.:07:54.

it and it did not sink in. Where is he? He was a good friend? Yes.

:07:54.:08:01.

did you feel? Pretty bad. But the human spirit is amazingly resilient.

:08:01.:08:09.

I flew that day. And he still flies. So, how does this veteran of the

:08:09.:08:15.

Falklands conflict the view today's tensions over the islands? Can he

:08:15.:08:19.

foresee another invasion? amount of resources we have their

:08:19.:08:27.

and the infrastructure in place, and the supply chain, I do not see

:08:27.:08:32.

this as a viable option for any sane person and any politician in

:08:33.:08:40.

Argentina to think that for one moment they could get away with it.

:08:40.:08:44.

It's a big night for Torquay United. They try to overturn a two-goal

:08:44.:08:46.

deficit against Cheltenham Town in the League Two playoffs semi final

:08:46.:08:51.

second leg with the prize of a trip to Wembley at stake. Spotlight's

:08:51.:08:54.

Dave Gibbins has been at Plainmoor this afternoon to gauge the mood

:08:54.:09:03.

there. Here we are, just one hour before kick-off with Torquay United

:09:03.:09:06.

and their second leg of the play- off against Cheltenham Town.

:09:06.:09:10.

Excitement is building, the question is, can they overturn that

:09:10.:09:14.

death is it? Let's find out from the chairman and manager. Simon

:09:14.:09:19.

Baker, thanks for joining us. If you do get to Wembley, how much

:09:19.:09:27.

would it be worth to a club? It is know how many people we would have

:09:27.:09:32.

on the Sunday, which is better than previously. Around about 100,000,

:09:32.:09:39.

I reckon. That is if you get there. And you have a big job? Martin Ling

:09:39.:09:44.

knows that fairly well. After losing in the first leg. He came so

:09:44.:09:47.

close, Ryan Jarvis had a couple of occasions. How heartbreaking was

:09:47.:09:57.
:09:57.:09:57.

that? Disappointing at the time. Two great chances. The first goal

:09:57.:10:01.

was a massive chance and that would have made a difference. He should

:10:01.:10:07.

have scored, to be honest. But we cannot go on about that, we have

:10:07.:10:10.

done our training to make sure that we can get the result tonight.

:10:10.:10:16.

would you be telling a players? are 90 minutes away from the

:10:16.:10:18.

Wembley final and there are not many people who get that

:10:18.:10:24.

opportunity. Back in October, after we got beaten 4 - 1 at Southend,

:10:24.:10:29.

but we thought we would be playing one game to get to the Wembley

:10:29.:10:33.

final, it would be amazing. It has been a great season. It can be

:10:33.:10:38.

really great if we can get out of this league. We have accepted has

:10:38.:10:46.

so far but we want more. I hope you do. Best of luck. More on the late

:10:46.:10:49.

bulletin at 10:25pm. A couple who feared they would have to cancel

:10:49.:10:52.

their wedding after their venue in Cornwall was destroyed by fire have

:10:52.:10:55.

finally tied the knot. Michelle and Chris Gould were left devastated

:10:55.:10:59.

when fire swept through the Falmouth Beach Resort Hotel.

:10:59.:11:06.

Eleanor Parkinson reports. Michelle and Chris Gould spent 15 months

:11:06.:11:10.

planning the wedding and Joseph Falmouth Beach Resort Hotel because

:11:10.:11:14.

it was close to the beach. But days before the big day, the hotel was

:11:14.:11:20.

destroyed by fire. I heard it on the radio when Michelle was going

:11:20.:11:23.

to pay for the flowers for the church and she came back to the car

:11:23.:11:28.

and I told her. She thought I was joking. We were completely stunned.

:11:29.:11:32.

We just listened to the reports on the radio. We were completely stand,

:11:32.:11:37.

we could not believe it. Nobody was hurt in a huge fire but many people

:11:37.:11:41.

lost their holidays and the hotel had more than 30 weddings planned

:11:41.:11:45.

this year. The shell suffers from a serious error condition and the

:11:45.:11:49.

stress began to affect your health. The couple thought it might be

:11:49.:11:51.

better to postpone the wedding altogether but then another hotel

:11:52.:11:56.

five miles up the road stepped in and offered to replicate their day

:11:56.:12:01.

by down to the wedding menu. In the end, the sun was shining and they

:12:02.:12:06.

even got to the beach. We had some lovely photographs on the beach.

:12:06.:12:11.

They it was absolutely brilliant. Some people made it into the water?

:12:11.:12:17.

They certainly dead. The younger, more lively members of the family!

:12:17.:12:20.

The happy couple are planning their honeymoon and they are keeping

:12:20.:12:28.

their fingers well and truly crossed. That's all from the in the

:12:28.:12:32.

studio because it is time to visit the Devon County Show, officially

:12:32.:12:36.

opened by the Secretary of State for the environment. She also

:12:36.:12:39.

announced 13 million of funding to support hill farmers on Dartmoor

:12:39.:12:44.

and enable them to create new wildlife habitats. It was an early

:12:44.:12:45.

highlight for the show which this year also boasts the Royal Canadian

:12:45.:12:51.

Mounted Police. Victoria is at the showground. Have you had a good

:12:51.:12:58.

day? A really good day, you have been nest and although we're not

:12:58.:13:06.

together, and co-ordinating with this purple scarf. But it is

:13:06.:13:12.

freezing at the moment. The crowds have died down. But thousands of

:13:12.:13:16.

people have come to this 117th Devon County Show, it was a real

:13:17.:13:22.

celebration and, together of the farming community, everything

:13:22.:13:26.

agricultural, arts, crafts and food. It has once more been absolutely

:13:26.:13:31.

amazing. I was talking to one ad earlier on who said that she always

:13:31.:13:34.

comes to the show and she has hardly missed one of them because

:13:34.:13:38.

it falls at the same time as a birthday and she was 60 this week

:13:38.:13:43.

and she comes to celebrate and what better way? She is also carrying

:13:43.:13:48.

the Olympic flame next Friday in Cardiff. Caroline Spelman opened

:13:48.:13:52.

the show officially the spawning and she had ago denounced -- good

:13:52.:13:56.

announcement for the hill farmers and our political editor Martyn

:13:56.:14:01.

Oates caught up with her earlier... The Environment Secretary is here

:14:01.:14:06.

today as part of the Royal roadshow, wanting to hear first hand about

:14:06.:14:10.

issues affecting people in countryside communities. There is

:14:10.:14:17.

no better distillation of rural life in Devon and this event? This

:14:17.:14:23.

morning you announced funding for one specific part, hill farmers on

:14:23.:14:28.

dark work and you will know that they feel they need some more

:14:28.:14:32.

fundamental help. Is it not possible through the reading

:14:32.:14:36.

position of the agricultural policy to get them a bigger chunk of

:14:36.:14:41.

European funding? So certainly the Government recognises how tough it

:14:41.:14:46.

is for hill farmers but I will have those hill farmers in mind when we

:14:46.:14:51.

did it the less favoured areas of the United Kingdom. There are lots

:14:51.:14:55.

of them and hill farmers would benefit from measures proposed to

:14:55.:15:01.

help areas that are ecologically disadvantaged. You cannot say much

:15:01.:15:07.

about the details of the proposed pilot badger cull because it is

:15:07.:15:11.

subject to review but if the judge rules in the government favour, can

:15:11.:15:17.

you confirm your stick to the timetable and begin in October?

:15:17.:15:19.

anticipated that there would be a legal challenge and we build that

:15:19.:15:23.

into the timetable. We are surrounded by fabulous artist today.

:15:23.:15:26.

Food producers will be pleased that the Government has brought forward

:15:26.:15:29.

plans to introduce the groceries cold adjudicator to make sure they

:15:29.:15:34.

get a fair deal from supermarkets. Some feel that the adjudicator will

:15:34.:15:38.

not have the teeth that it needs to do the job? The Bill as it went to

:15:38.:15:43.

Parliament has an opportunity for everybody to get involved in making

:15:43.:15:48.

sure that this adjudicator has the tools to take a very tough line and

:15:48.:15:52.

it is important in the food industry that people here loudly

:15:52.:15:55.

that people can hear that the Government supports the food and

:15:55.:15:59.

farming industry to produce more food for home consumption and the

:15:59.:16:03.

export market but that is to be down in a very fair way. Thank you

:16:03.:16:08.

very much. I will let the Secretary of State enjoy the rest of the show.

:16:08.:16:17.

I might investigate the ice-cream! Martin not reporting. To be chosen

:16:17.:16:20.

to be President of this fabulous show, it always goes to someone

:16:21.:16:25.

very important within the local farming and food committee and that

:16:25.:16:31.

person this year is nearly quick. What a huge honour this must be?

:16:31.:16:37.

Absolutely fantastic. I could never have imagined this. It would never

:16:37.:16:41.

have crossed my mind, it is a fabulous honour and it is lovely to

:16:41.:16:48.

be able to bring a really distinctive feel to the show.

:16:48.:16:53.

are restored. You have been here for many years. What does this mean

:16:53.:16:59.

to you? It is the best party in Devon. It showcases farming to

:17:00.:17:05.

other farmers, it showcases farming for the general public. This is

:17:05.:17:11.

what we get our food from and it is a showcase for Devon. It is

:17:11.:17:15.

wonderful to be her once again. It is a chance for the food and

:17:15.:17:22.

farming committee to come together and chat? Good fellowship. And just

:17:22.:17:25.

recently, the general public has woken up to the idea that farming

:17:25.:17:30.

is a very important thing. We need the food that farming produces and

:17:30.:17:35.

that gives an extra special excitement to this, for the first

:17:35.:17:40.

time farming is something that people appreciate and that gives a

:17:40.:17:44.

lovely sense an acknowledgement to the whole show. There is a real

:17:44.:17:50.

sense of excitement this year? is really fun days to see the

:17:50.:17:55.

weather farming is felt at the heart of the show. Farmers with

:17:55.:18:02.

grass plots, lots of lovely machinery. That wonderful teepee,

:18:02.:18:06.

showing how food gets from the farm to people's minds. The whole thing

:18:06.:18:12.

is perfect. Wonderful to talk to you. Thank you. The show has so

:18:12.:18:16.

much to offer, as well as the animals and the food and farming,

:18:16.:18:21.

there is always something very special here every year. This year,

:18:21.:18:24.

the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are here. Some people were lucky

:18:24.:18:30.

enough to meet them, including Andrea Ormsby... 10 am. Just two

:18:30.:18:35.

hours until a short time and there is a lot to do. A line in a

:18:35.:18:42.

cerebral feat. I have been doing this for one year. She is a 16

:18:42.:18:47.

year-old mare and we have bonded quite well. It takes a lot of

:18:47.:18:50.

preparation because the horse must be Immaculate, you have to polish

:18:50.:18:56.

all your stuff, top-notch. Especially for the last performance,

:18:56.:19:03.

for the Queen at Windsor. For the Queen and was very nervous. Ryan

:19:03.:19:09.

Constable Brent Edwards. I had been here for five years, my horse, what

:19:09.:19:15.

is different, is he lost sight in his right eye when he was five. He

:19:15.:19:19.

is perfectly capable of doing all the nurses and he isn't one of the

:19:19.:19:24.

more important positions. He is as sound as any other horse. We

:19:24.:19:28.

practise for over six months every day for up to four hours each day

:19:28.:19:32.

riding. We know what and the horse has not, as long as everything

:19:32.:19:37.

stays status quo, we are pretty good. 11 o'clock, and the mounted

:19:37.:19:42.

police are off, ready for a short warm-up before the first big show.

:19:42.:19:46.

This is my 5th time here, I cannot tell you about the reception, it

:19:46.:19:54.

has been just amazing. The people that have had parents who live in

:19:54.:20:04.

Canada, and we are very privileged. And so to the main arena to see

:20:04.:20:14.
:20:14.:20:23.

these mounted police performing They have been a real attraction.

:20:23.:20:29.

There has been so much to do. Doc herding, there has been a horse

:20:29.:20:38.

Whisperer, cider making. So much to here and see. Emma Thomasson has

:20:38.:20:48.
:20:48.:20:58.

been sampling the sights and sounds of the show. It is dusty, hard work.

:20:58.:21:08.
:21:08.:21:22.

Even the nuts are tied by hand. We need to shed the image of the

:21:22.:21:26.

overworked, underpaid farmer and make farming sexy and exciting,

:21:26.:21:31.

because it is and there are lots of people who say that. Agricultural

:21:31.:21:33.

colleges are full and lots of people want to be farmers and times

:21:33.:21:43.
:21:43.:22:02.

We use a product called soft soap and a human version -- bovine

:22:02.:22:08.

version of hair gel and that makes him look bigger everywhere and

:22:08.:22:12.

really shows them off. It is like having a shower after a hard day's

work. The food tent has been absolutely packed. The weather has

:22:33.:22:37.

been changeable so everybody has been crowding in there. It was a

:22:37.:22:43.

chance for viewers to meet us from the BBC been our tent. But the

:22:44.:22:47.

majority of questions have been for David about the weather. People

:22:47.:22:50.

were not sure whether it was supposed to be raining. Can he

:22:50.:23:00.
:23:00.:23:01.

You have a red nose, is that the cold or the sadder?! Some showers

:23:01.:23:06.

in the forecast and that does coincide with the torch relay. Lots

:23:06.:23:10.

of cloud and the satellite picture from the earlier rain, and there is

:23:10.:23:14.

now some clearance, there is a whole developing, just off the

:23:14.:23:19.

north coast of France and that will gradually spill northwards. Some

:23:19.:23:22.

clear skies developing overnight and some dry conditions, not just

:23:22.:23:30.

at the Showground. However, there is a weather front around this area

:23:30.:23:33.

of low pressure and that will bring persistent rain tomorrow and I

:23:33.:23:37.

think after some bad weather in the morning, it is cloudy with patchy

:23:37.:23:39.

rain beginning to show as we move through the afternoon and into the

:23:39.:23:45.

early evening. Some of that rain will get into Cornwall and not much

:23:45.:23:50.

into the far west, particularly for RNAS Culdrose and Land's End. By

:23:50.:23:55.

the time we get to Saturday, we are between weather systems, one line

:23:55.:23:59.

towards southern Ireland and another for the Channel Islands and

:23:59.:24:03.

between, cloudy but mainly dry for the start of the torch relay. This

:24:03.:24:08.

is the picture from earlier. You can see that hole in the cloud

:24:08.:24:12.

developing. That continues to go northwards this evening so showers

:24:12.:24:16.

will die away. Perhaps turning misty tomorrow as we start to see

:24:17.:24:21.

more cloud developing and low cloud appearing through the early hours

:24:21.:24:25.

of tomorrow morning. Overnight temperatures down to around five

:24:25.:24:30.

degrees, most places holding up at nine or 10 degrees and tomorrow,

:24:30.:24:33.

all that cloud, for the South which eventually starts to produce patchy

:24:33.:24:39.

rain. Initially lied but theatre in the day some moderate bursts

:24:39.:24:42.

possible and it becomes extensive into the afternoon and the early

:24:42.:24:47.

evening. Temperatures getting up to around 13 or 14 degrees, not as

:24:47.:24:50.

many as today so perhaps not feeling quite as cold and the wind

:24:50.:24:55.

for much of the Day tomorrow will be north-easterly. This is the

:24:55.:24:58.

forecast for the Devon County Show, rather cloudy with the risk of

:24:58.:25:05.

showers throughout. But the breeze not as strong as it has been. The

:25:05.:25:15.
:25:15.:25:19.

And the forecast for coastal waters. The risk of showers and generally

:25:19.:25:24.

good visibility. Let's look further ahead. The weekend, very important

:25:24.:25:28.

for the south-west and on Saturday we can expect some showers, any

:25:28.:25:32.

some brightness down and again but a lot of cloud with the risk of

:25:32.:25:34.

showers and that risk continues into Sunday although the lion's

:25:34.:25:39.

share will be across eastern parts of Devon and mainly into Dorset and

:25:39.:25:45.

Somerset. By Monday, it should be largely fine and dry. Let's look at

:25:45.:25:49.

the all-important torch relay forecast, it starts at Land's End

:25:49.:25:53.

and travels right through Cornwall and ends up in Devon and Plymouth

:25:53.:25:59.

by the evening. The forecast for the start is rather cloudy and

:25:59.:26:02.

those conditions continue through to the end of the day. Every now

:26:02.:26:06.

and then, the chance of seeing one or two sharp showers. For most of

:26:06.:26:11.

the day it is dry and I must stress that became a lot of cloud. But

:26:11.:26:15.

turn a warm, it could be warmer for the relay. Temperatures up to

:26:15.:26:22.

perhaps 12 or 13 degrees. Possibly 14. And, of course, the BBC will be

:26:22.:26:25.

covering that event right the way through the weekend. Not just

:26:25.:26:29.

Saturday but also Sunday. You can find out more information on the

:26:29.:26:39.

website... Updates through the weekend and following that torch

:26:39.:26:49.

relay, right through the next few Thank you. The Spotlight team will
