A historic landmark washed away, roads destroyed by the power of the

:00:00.:00:16.

sea and buildings left teetering on the edge. The region takes another

:00:17.:00:26.

battering from the weather. Good evening, Huge waves have taken

:00:27.:00:35.

their toll on coastal communities. Eventually the waves got so big that

:00:36.:00:41.

it overwhelmed the blockhouse on the pier. One minute it was there and

:00:42.:00:48.

the next it wasn't. A special church service is being

:00:49.:00:51.

held tonight for Harry Martin. His family has said they're

:00:52.:00:53.

overwhelmingly grateful for the efforts to find him.

:00:54.:00:57.

And playing the waiting game for a special delivery after a dog ate a

:00:58.:01:04.

diamond. I've given up thinking it was

:01:05.:01:11.

futile. But that last bit of effort. The sun was changing and there it

:01:12.:01:15.

was. I just couldn't believe it. Waves more than 30 feet high are

:01:16.:01:18.

battering the region's coast tonight as the bad weather continues its

:01:19.:01:22.

grip on the South West. There's been flooding along Cornwall's South

:01:23.:01:25.

Coast, with the village of Seaton cut in two. It's a similar story in

:01:26.:01:29.

South Devon where sea walls stood little chance against the high tides

:01:30.:01:32.

and huge waves. Tonight we'll report from the North and South Coast and

:01:33.:01:36.

have the latest on the search for missing teenager Harry Martin.

:01:37.:01:41.

First, David George reports on the destruction along Cornwall's North

:01:42.:01:44.

Coast at Perranporth, Fistral and Portreath.

:01:45.:01:54.

Cornwell's north coast is used to a battering from pixies but waves like

:01:55.:01:58.

these haven't been seen for years. I made structures on the seashore have

:01:59.:02:02.

collapsed as thousands of tonnes of water had been driven at them when

:02:03.:02:06.

strong winds blowing in from the Atlantic. The old blockhouse or

:02:07.:02:15.

Monkey House met its end today. Built to provide shelter for the

:02:16.:02:18.

harbour workers, its collapse was caught on camera.

:02:19.:02:23.

The waves got so big that it overwhelmed the blockhouse on the

:02:24.:02:26.

end of the pier. One minute it was there and the next it wasn't. A wave

:02:27.:02:32.

came and they had been breaking heavily over eight for some hours.

:02:33.:02:41.

Then they abated and it wasn't there anymore. Nobody could believe what

:02:42.:02:45.

they were saying. Along the coasts, this is Fistral

:02:46.:02:56.

beat beach, undermined by the seas. We are not alone. I'm just a bit sad

:02:57.:03:05.

to see it go but I'm sure we can build it back stronger and better

:03:06.:03:09.

and we'll be open again in the summer.

:03:10.:03:12.

Just around the corner, eight metres of the road has been washed away.

:03:13.:03:16.

Electricity cables are dangling and the nearby aquarium is cut off.

:03:17.:03:22.

Newquay's lifeguard training centre has survived the onslaught but its

:03:23.:03:27.

steps and slipway had been smashed by the biggest wave some people have

:03:28.:03:31.

ever seen. It's huge, absolutely massive. It

:03:32.:03:37.

was a once in a lifetime swell. Generated by the wind that is

:03:38.:03:42.

buffeting us know. The power of the sea, Gillick at the front of the

:03:43.:03:46.

centre and what is happening here, that is happening everywhere around

:03:47.:03:52.

the coast. People were watching at high tide to

:03:53.:03:56.

see what would happen to this pub. Tens of thousands of tonnes of sand

:03:57.:04:02.

have been washed away, appealing to leave the building exposed.

:04:03.:04:08.

We have all the conditions but mother nature has kept the wind

:04:09.:04:12.

going southerly or south`west and that is in our favour.

:04:13.:04:17.

Concern now turns to tonight 's high water at just after 9pm.

:04:18.:04:25.

The waves have pounded the south coast with the sea wall at Seaton in

:04:26.:04:32.

Cornwall suffering more damage. And South Devon felt the full force of

:04:33.:04:36.

the tidal swell but the relative shelter of North Sands near Salcombe

:04:37.:04:39.

provided surfers with an ideal location for an exhilarating

:04:40.:04:40.

session. The main road through Seaton

:04:41.:04:43.

completely swamped by sea water. This morning 's high tide forced

:04:44.:04:48.

police to evacuate the area and cordon of sections of the damaged

:04:49.:04:53.

sea wall. I remain concerned sub been the

:04:54.:04:56.

height of the tide and whether it will breach the wall. We have

:04:57.:05:01.

already evacuated the cafe to ensure that people are safe and our rather

:05:02.:05:08.

concern is the undermining of the wall by the sea.

:05:09.:05:13.

That gives you some indication of the power of the high tides and the

:05:14.:05:16.

seas which have been battling Seaton this morning. But the power of the

:05:17.:05:23.

sea proved irresistible further around the coast in Devon. At North

:05:24.:05:28.

Sands near Salcombe, harden servers got stuck in.

:05:29.:05:38.

`` hardened surfers. It can be dangerous for the wrong

:05:39.:05:42.

person at the wrong time. This area would normally be packed

:05:43.:05:47.

with surfers but the beach is to exposed today.

:05:48.:05:54.

Wild, very hard to find decent waves. We looked generally for

:05:55.:06:00.

smaller swells as we don't have capacity to deal with things this

:06:01.:06:05.

big. It was a great day for looking at the weather from a distance.

:06:06.:06:10.

Little chance of doing that from here, this car park still under

:06:11.:06:13.

water. But people couldn't resist having a peek at the wild weather

:06:14.:06:18.

and the sea. The family of a missing teenager say

:06:19.:06:21.

they are "overwhelmingly grateful" to local people who have been

:06:22.:06:25.

helping to look for him. Harry Martin disappeared on Thursday after

:06:26.:06:28.

leaving his home near Noss Mayo to take photos of the stormy seas.

:06:29.:06:35.

Chloe Axford reports. Five days since he went missing, the

:06:36.:06:39.

search for Harry Martin continues unabated. Today the focus has moved

:06:40.:06:44.

away from the coast to the rivers and streams around Noss Mayo. This

:06:45.:06:49.

area inland has already been searched at least once but now a

:06:50.:06:52.

team of specialist police divers have returned to search the water

:06:53.:06:58.

for any trace of Harry. We are still treating this as a

:06:59.:07:04.

search to find Harry and is `` until we get evidence to the contrary we

:07:05.:07:10.

will do that. We will carry on searching through this week and then

:07:11.:07:14.

there will come a time that we have to review what we are doing.

:07:15.:07:20.

18`year`old Harry was last seen by his father leaving his home and

:07:21.:07:23.

walking towards the coastal path on Thursday. It is believed that the

:07:24.:07:28.

photography student was hoping to take pictures of the stormy seas.

:07:29.:07:33.

Over the weekend, more than 100 local volunteers joined the search.

:07:34.:07:37.

The local vicar says his family are grateful.

:07:38.:07:42.

They are coping really well in difficult circumstances but the

:07:43.:07:45.

message they would like to give out is that they are overwhelmingly

:07:46.:07:50.

grateful for the support of the community. It has been such a

:07:51.:07:55.

wonderful thing to see the way people are pulling together and

:07:56.:08:00.

everybody wanting to do something to help.

:08:01.:08:03.

The local community has been deeply affected by Harry's disappearance.

:08:04.:08:09.

Tonight, a special service is being held. A chance for people to gather

:08:10.:08:14.

and pray that he might yet be found. A police officer has spoken for the

:08:15.:08:18.

first time about the moment he rescued a man from heavy surf off

:08:19.:08:21.

Newquay. Sergeant Reg Butler of Devon and Cornwall Police pulled the

:08:22.:08:25.

man to safety in the early hours of Saturday morning in treacherous

:08:26.:08:27.

conditions. He's been talking to Spotlight's Janine Jansen.

:08:28.:08:39.

We were on patrol and spotted a man walking into the sea. I called for

:08:40.:08:44.

assistance and they came down and eliminated him. We called for the

:08:45.:08:50.

lifeboats and the coastguard. He was being washed out to sea and we were

:08:51.:08:54.

very lucky that the sea washed him in fairly close against the rocks. I

:08:55.:09:04.

weeded out and managed to snatch him and he was taken to hospital.

:09:05.:09:07.

What were the conditions like? Very rough. Very dangerous for

:09:08.:09:15.

people going into the sea. Also joining us is Inspector Dave

:09:16.:09:19.

Meredith. What is your advice to people?

:09:20.:09:24.

This was very good response from the officers. The message from all the

:09:25.:09:30.

emergency services is to please stay away from the coast during this

:09:31.:09:35.

stormy period. There is plenty of footage on television that you can

:09:36.:09:40.

watch so please stay away from the coasts and the rivers.

:09:41.:09:44.

One very lucky man that the police were in the area. Who knows what

:09:45.:09:47.

would have happened to him if they weren't.

:09:48.:09:51.

A former Plymouth`based Royal Marine found guilty in December of

:09:52.:09:53.

murdering a wounded insurgent in Afghanistan is to appeal against his

:09:54.:09:56.

conviction Alexander Blackman, formerly of 42 Commando, was jailed

:09:57.:09:59.

for life for the killing, which happened in Helmand Province in

:10:00.:10:05.

2011. The 39`year`old was the senior NCO at a command post at the time of

:10:06.:10:10.

the incident. A new review of Dartmoor Prison

:10:11.:10:13.

reveals that some single cells are still being used for two prisoners

:10:14.:10:16.

and there are still problems with illegal drug use. But the

:10:17.:10:19.

Independent Monitoring Board did praise the prison for being well

:10:20.:10:28.

run. A woman forced to fight Devon social

:10:29.:10:32.

services to get back her daughter after she was taken into care has

:10:33.:10:36.

told the BBC she has no faith that the heavily`criticised child

:10:37.:10:38.

protection department will improve. Her daughter was only returned after

:10:39.:10:41.

it was revealed that evidence used by social services against her may

:10:42.:10:44.

have been manipulated. Tonight's Inside Out South West programme has

:10:45.:10:47.

seen a report into the case which found "false and misleading

:10:48.:10:50.

information" was used by Devon social services to take her daughter

:10:51.:10:54.

into care. That it was "dangerous and damaging". And that the outcome

:10:55.:10:57.

was "serious and probably permanent damage" to the mother. Sam Smith

:10:58.:11:06.

reports. Nearly two years ago, this woman who

:11:07.:11:10.

we are calling Sarah turned to social services for help. She now

:11:11.:11:16.

bitterly regrets the decision. Her daughter was taken into care without

:11:17.:11:20.

warning but shockingly bad decision was made after crucial notes were

:11:21.:11:26.

inexplicably altered to suggest she was suicidal. Sarah's daughter was

:11:27.:11:30.

eventually returned but the experience has left them both

:11:31.:11:35.

scarred. I didn't know it was possible to

:11:36.:11:39.

feel that bad because I was told I might never get her back. She was

:11:40.:11:44.

distressed, traumatised and frightened for spending so so long

:11:45.:11:57.

away. What DC to that? An official report was carried out

:11:58.:12:00.

into what happened. It identified 30 and departmental feelings which the

:12:01.:12:05.

council told us it is currently addressing. But that inquiry is one

:12:06.:12:10.

of the series of investigations into child protection. An Ofsted report

:12:11.:12:16.

found the service was inadequate in every respect. Another report

:12:17.:12:22.

highlighted similar problems. Now an improvement panel is recommending a

:12:23.:12:26.

fundamental restructuring of the service.

:12:27.:12:33.

I have heard there were people who were not able to speak to each

:12:34.:12:38.

other. Politicians, senior managers and so on. If that kind of petty

:12:39.:12:44.

rivalry and silliness was allowed to put children at risk, I am frankly

:12:45.:12:48.

appalled and I'm also appalled that that is not coming out in public.

:12:49.:12:53.

The council says there will now be a rapid change around. Who is being

:12:54.:12:57.

held to account yet? I've made it clear I am being held

:12:58.:13:00.

to account for the improvement of the process and that is what I am

:13:01.:13:03.

here to do. Despite whites bread cuts ``

:13:04.:13:11.

widespread cuts, the budget for these care services have risen.

:13:12.:13:16.

And you can watch the whole story tonight on Inside Out at 7:30pm here

:13:17.:13:25.

on BBC One. Missed hospital appointments in the

:13:26.:13:28.

South West are costing the NHS millions of pounds. Last year alone

:13:29.:13:31.

more than 165,000 people failed to turn up for consultations. New

:13:32.:13:34.

reminder services are now being introduced.

:13:35.:13:41.

Almost 500,000 people walked through these doors to be treated every

:13:42.:13:47.

year. But not everyone turns up to their outpatient appointment. Before

:13:48.:13:52.

a telephone reminder service was introduced, almost 8% of patients

:13:53.:13:57.

failed to tell the hospital they couldn't attend. Brian got a

:13:58.:14:03.

reminder for his appointment a few days ago.

:14:04.:14:08.

I found them very good. Very often you just phone them back and confirm

:14:09.:14:13.

the appointment and that is it, all done.

:14:14.:14:17.

Wasted appointments are costing the NHS millions every year but there

:14:18.:14:21.

have been big changes since it started the remainder service.

:14:22.:14:26.

Compared now to them, 12,000 more patients are getting care than they

:14:27.:14:34.

should. For as, in terms of results, it puts us up in the top ten for

:14:35.:14:38.

getting patients to attend on the day.

:14:39.:14:42.

But during the last financial year, almost 13,000 people `` 30,000

:14:43.:14:46.

people didn't attend. At the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

:14:47.:15:10.

40,000 patients didn't turn up. It is now hoping that its new telephone

:15:11.:15:14.

remainder service will reduce that figure. Dorset County Hospital is

:15:15.:15:21.

looking to do the same. They are apparently losing ?3 million every

:15:22.:15:26.

year. They are looking at new technology to reduce the rates even

:15:27.:15:32.

further but the best solution, they say, would be for patients to let

:15:33.:15:36.

them know if they cannot turn up. Time for the sport and tonight we've

:15:37.:15:39.

got news on Torquay United's new manager and he's someone we all know

:15:40.:15:43.

very well here, isn't he, Dave? Yes, he's 41`year`old Chris

:15:44.:15:45.

Hargreaves, who's been announced as the successor to Alan Knill, who was

:15:46.:15:50.

sacked four days ago. Hargreaves was first`team coach at Championship

:15:51.:15:52.

club Bournemouth and is a regular football pundit for BBC Spotlight.

:15:53.:15:58.

It's not the biggest surprise that Chris got the job, is it?

:15:59.:16:07.

It isn't. He is well respected and was captain of Torquay United five

:16:08.:16:11.

years ago when he scored the first goal in the 2009 play`off final in

:16:12.:16:15.

League Two. How do you think he'll get on?

:16:16.:16:30.

He has got to cut his teeth. They are taking on the bottom of the

:16:31.:16:37.

table team. They were caught out by a late equaliser.

:16:38.:16:40.

Who'll be assisting him at Plainmoor?

:16:41.:16:53.

Lee Hodges, who you Mayra member has plenty of experience. It will be

:16:54.:17:06.

interesting times ahead. Plymouth Argyle look forward to an

:17:07.:17:09.

FA Cup replay after fighting back from two goals down at Port Vale

:17:10.:17:18.

yesterday. Top scorer Reuben Reid started the revival early in the

:17:19.:17:21.

second half, before 17`year`old Ben Purrington completed the comeback

:17:22.:17:24.

with his first goal for the Pilgrims. The replay will be at Home

:17:25.:17:28.

Park on Tuesday week with the winners facing Brighton at home.

:17:29.:17:31.

Yeovil Town face a daunting fourth round tie at Premier League

:17:32.:17:33.

Southampton after despatching Leyton Orient 4`0 at Huish Park. Two from

:17:34.:17:37.

James Hayter and one each from Joel Grant and Kieffer Moore saw them

:17:38.:17:39.

through. Exeter Chiefs have dropped to eighth

:17:40.:17:42.

in rugby's Premiership after an agonising 19`16 defeat at London

:17:43.:17:45.

Wasps. They led 13`3 at half`time through a Dave Lewis try and the

:17:46.:17:48.

supplementaries from Henry Slade. But at 16`16, there was controversy

:17:49.:17:51.

when Slade's effort was ruled out. To rub salt into the Chiefs' wounds,

:17:52.:17:55.

Andy Goode won it for Wasps with a last minute drop goal.

:17:56.:17:57.

In the Championship, Plymouth Albion scored the only try in their 15`14

:17:58.:18:01.

home defeat to Leeds through captain Rory Cushion. They'd have won it if

:18:02.:18:07.

Declan Cusack's late drop goal had been successful.

:18:08.:18:12.

A Taunton volleyball player has become the first British woman to

:18:13.:18:15.

compete in one of her sport's biggest competitions, even though

:18:16.:18:18.

the British team went out of existence after the London Olympics.

:18:19.:18:23.

Keyra Michael has just finished her first season in Italy, playing in

:18:24.:18:27.

the European Champions League. Here's Ollie Williams.

:18:28.:18:34.

Welcome to the home of British volleyball which doesn't look

:18:35.:18:40.

massively British because it isn't. You can see the beautiful city.

:18:41.:18:47.

This is Italy, the new home of Keyra Michael, one of the few British

:18:48.:18:53.

professional players left in the year after these historic scenes.

:18:54.:18:58.

Within months of winning a game for the first time, the team was shut

:18:59.:19:01.

down. The team was disbanded so there is

:19:02.:19:18.

no longer a team. At six foot five, she has signed up

:19:19.:19:26.

as a middle blocker for this team in Milan. They play and one of the top

:19:27.:19:33.

competitions in the world. Ciara grew up in Somerset is the first

:19:34.:19:39.

British player to reach this level. I remember reading a quote before

:19:40.:19:47.

London 2012 we said, every member of Team GB has the responsibility to

:19:48.:19:54.

inspire the nation. I would really like to think that I can inspire

:19:55.:19:57.

kids by being here. Good for her. And at this time

:19:58.:20:06.

tomorrow, we'll be introducing you to Torquay's new manager ` that's if

:20:07.:20:09.

he needs any introduction, of course. Many people are now likely

:20:10.:20:21.

to have to work into their 70s but working into old age is nothing new

:20:22.:20:24.

for many people here in the south west.

:20:25.:20:26.

The region already has a higher proportion of older workers than the

:20:27.:20:29.

UK average. In fact, Spotlight's Greg Wade has been to meet a couple

:20:30.:20:31.

who are still working in their 80s. At 91, Ethel Morley still makes this

:20:32.:20:53.

small business sing. Started in 1975, the family`run firm

:20:54.:20:56.

manufactured dry suits and embroidered garments such as polo

:20:57.:21:02.

shirts. It wasn't a conscious decision to

:21:03.:21:08.

stay at work. You just get up in the morning and go to the same place and

:21:09.:21:14.

one day you are old. Age is really just a number.

:21:15.:21:19.

But by the time you get to 90 it doesn't really matter too much, does

:21:20.:21:21.

it? It doesn't matter anyway.

:21:22.:21:24.

Their son Roger, a mere 60, thinks age isn't a barrier to employment.

:21:25.:21:29.

In fact, quite the opposite. They've got quite a lifetime of

:21:30.:21:32.

knowledge about garments and technical stuff so there is a wealth

:21:33.:21:40.

of knowledge to be had from there. You have to be active, you have to

:21:41.:21:44.

keep active and if you are not physically active, you've got to be

:21:45.:21:48.

brain active. If you want to work, work. Especially if you need the

:21:49.:21:53.

money. Because this business is run by its

:21:54.:21:57.

members, they can decide when to retire. Other workers may look on in

:21:58.:21:59.

envy. Do you think we will still be here

:22:00.:22:16.

doing this in our 70s and 80s? I don't think they will let us!

:22:17.:22:21.

Now, there aren't many women who'd say no to being given a diamond on

:22:22.:22:25.

Christmas Day. But for one woman in Exmouth, her diamond came in rather

:22:26.:22:27.

an unusual way. Yes, this particular gem didn't come

:22:28.:22:30.

gift wrapped and involved a fair amount of work just to find.

:22:31.:22:33.

Spotlight's Andrea Ormsby has the story.

:22:34.:22:42.

Meets Jack, a trainee police dog. He has lived with Angie Collins for

about seven months. He is a great character, very

:22:47.:22:52.

gentle, they do call him Gentle Jack.

:22:53.:22:59.

No other dog has done what Jack did just before Christmas.

:23:00.:23:05.

It was a fantastic, lovely calm morning. We were relaxing and I

:23:06.:23:12.

popped out into the kitchen and there was my ring on the floor,

:23:13.:23:16.

mangled. Mangled and missing the diamond. I

:23:17.:23:24.

think, I'm not overly sure, that the ring costs the best part of ?18,000.

:23:25.:23:30.

The husband and I emptied the entire room, which took hours, and I could

:23:31.:23:35.

only conclude that Jack had eaten it.

:23:36.:23:39.

So what to do? Is the vet explained, it was a

:23:40.:23:45.

simple process of waiting and saving. By Christmas Day I had given

:23:46.:23:53.

up and the vet gave me advice that it was very unlikely that I would

:23:54.:23:59.

get it back. I thought this is futile and just give up but that

:24:00.:24:04.

last wee bit of effort, the sun was shining and there it was. I just

:24:05.:24:09.

couldn't believe it. My face must have been a picture.

:24:10.:24:13.

Now they are making the most of Jack before he starts his as a police

:24:14.:24:18.

dog, were stealing diamonds really would be frowned upon.

:24:19.:24:24.

I love the innocent look on the dog's face. Let's see if the weather

:24:25.:24:31.

is going to get any better after the horrendous storms. That way behind

:24:32.:24:33.

you look threatening. We are starting off with strong

:24:34.:24:42.

winds but they do use of later in the week. Otherwise we are looking

:24:43.:24:48.

at the mixture of sunshine and showers. We do still have a weather

:24:49.:24:56.

warning out from The Met office. There is still the risk of further

:24:57.:25:05.

flooding. The high tide times are between 8:30pm and 10:30pm tonight.

:25:06.:25:13.

Keep an eye on the flight line number. As we can see from these

:25:14.:25:18.

pictures taken in Exeter, we do still have problems with flooding.

:25:19.:25:28.

We do have some drier weather to come later on this week so the

:25:29.:25:35.

chance is that these. To recede but many areas are still having flood

:25:36.:25:40.

warnings. For the moment, we do have this area of cloud wrapped around a

:25:41.:25:47.

deep area of low pressure. It is causing a large swell of big waves.

:25:48.:25:58.

It is still quite windy but we will start to see some sunshine. This

:25:59.:26:05.

rain should move on and the winds will be lighter by Wednesday. We

:26:06.:26:08.

have seen some sharp showers across the region and a little bit of

:26:09.:26:15.

thunder and hailstones. Strong and gusty winds tonight. The wind will

:26:16.:26:28.

ease tomorrow by first thing. These are the minimum temperature

:26:29.:26:35.

overnight. Still a few showers around which will cause problems in

:26:36.:26:45.

Dorset and Somerset. The temperatures tomorrow are still

:26:46.:26:46.

fairly mild for the time of year. Still some big waves for the

:26:47.:27:16.

surfers. The wind still strong in the morning but do decrease by the

:27:17.:27:22.

end of the day. Still a bit of a mixture in the week ahead. More

:27:23.:27:29.

persistent rain but later winds on Wednesday. The could see a touch of

:27:30.:27:34.

frost on Friday. We will be back with the late news

:27:35.:27:41.

at 10:25pm so do join us for that. That is all from the Spotlight team.

:27:42.:27:43.

Good night. TOM: # And if there's

:27:44.:27:53.

anybody left in here # That doesn't want

:27:54.:28:13.

to be out there... #
