Good evening. Severe weather warnings have been issued for the | :00:14. | :00:17.
south`west tonight. Gale force winds are expected to bring further | :00:18. | :00:20.
disruption to coastal communities. And the Environment Agency say more | :00:21. | :00:23.
severe weather is on its way over the next few days. Emma Thomasson is | :00:24. | :00:27.
in Bude in Cornwall, where there is a severe flood warning. Emma. A real | :00:28. | :00:36.
sense of here we go again in place`macro. As you were saying, a | :00:37. | :00:41.
severe flood warnings in place for the whole town of Bute, and that is | :00:42. | :00:46.
where the Environment Agency judges there is a danger to life. The sea | :00:47. | :00:52.
is already topping the sea walls here. The water is coming up through | :00:53. | :00:57.
the drains as well. As you can probably see behind me, the | :00:58. | :01:01.
floodwaters come straight up the road. We have sandbags out here. | :01:02. | :01:06.
Nearby properties have not been evacuated. Authorities did ask | :01:07. | :01:10.
people to leave their homes last night, but many people chose to stay | :01:11. | :01:16.
put. Harry was one of them. You are always anxious. You can't help | :01:17. | :01:21.
feeling a bit anxious, but I hope we will be all right. People here quite | :01:22. | :01:29.
philosophical about the flooding. We have even had kayakers and surfers | :01:30. | :01:35.
taking advantage of these tidal surges, and surfing down the river. | :01:36. | :01:40.
Many people out here watching them do that. The surfers and kayakers | :01:41. | :01:44.
are ignoring the safety warnings. We have a couple of hours before the | :01:45. | :01:49.
water is expected to receive. The Environment Agency is concerned | :01:50. | :01:53.
about what will happen tomorrow morning. It has downgraded it to a | :01:54. | :01:57.
flood warning, the next level to what we have in place now. Tomorrow | :01:58. | :02:02.
is expected to be the second highest tide of the year, so it's not over | :02:03. | :02:08.
yet. Thank you. A van driver's walked away with | :02:09. | :02:11.
minor injuries, after his vehicle crashed over a bridge and plunged | :02:12. | :02:14.
20ft into the fast flowing River Tamar. The partially`submerged | :02:15. | :02:17.
transit van came to rest near Gunnislake after the accident early | :02:18. | :02:19.
this morning. John Henderson reports. | :02:20. | :02:27.
A broken bridge, a 20 foot drop into the River Tay Ma, and, 200 yards | :02:28. | :02:32.
downstream, a partially submerged transit van. And incredibly, the | :02:33. | :02:36.
driver managed to hail himself to safety. As far as we're aware, the | :02:37. | :02:45.
driver was with the vehicle throughout, and he his escape when | :02:46. | :02:50.
it came to arrest. We don't know where the driver of the fan managed | :02:51. | :02:54.
to get out of the river, but there's his vehicle pointing up towards the | :02:55. | :02:58.
bridge. It really is an incredible escape. It happened at about 9am | :02:59. | :03:01.
this morning. It appears the van was crossing the bridge from Cornwall | :03:02. | :03:07.
when something went wrong. Sometimes lorries scraped the side of it, | :03:08. | :03:11.
because it's very narrow. Occasionally the car will hit the | :03:12. | :03:17.
corner there. That is the most serious accident we've had here for | :03:18. | :03:19.
a long time. The van driver, a 30`year`old man believed to be from | :03:20. | :03:23.
the area, was taken to Plymouth's Derriford Hospital. But he's thought | :03:24. | :03:30.
to have only minor injuries. It's a very pleasant surprise to find that | :03:31. | :03:34.
somebody is actually OK after such a fall and a trip down the river of | :03:35. | :03:39.
such a length. It's likely that the bridge will be closed for a week. | :03:40. | :03:43.
The driver is one very lucky man. John Henderson, BBC Spotlight, | :03:44. | :03:45.
Gunnislake. In football, Exeter City drew 1`1 | :03:46. | :03:48.
with Burton Albion, and Plymouth Argyle also drew 1`1 with Mansfield | :03:49. | :03:52.
Town. But Torquay come away with victory from Portsmouth by a single | :03:53. | :04:01.
goal. In Rugby, Exeter Chiefs came away | :04:02. | :04:10.
victorious from Worcester Warriors. Now for a look at the weather. | :04:11. | :04:17.
We have strong winds and heavy showers throughout this evening. We | :04:18. | :04:21.
do have a Met Office yellow warning for winds in force. High tides could | :04:22. | :04:27.
lead to a risk of flooding. Those winds are easing down this evening, | :04:28. | :04:31.
and the line of heavy showers tend to become more of a scattering | :04:32. | :04:36.
through the night. Those winds stopping it getting too cold. For | :04:37. | :04:42.
tomorrow, it's a blustery day, though not as windy as today. We've | :04:43. | :04:47.
got some sharp showers in place, fewer than today, and more in the | :04:48. | :04:53.
way of sunny spells. Monday, we have some further wet and windy | :04:54. | :04:57.
conditions on the way, with a Met Office yellow warning for rain in | :04:58. | :05:02.
force. You'll Athere are live updates on the weather on BBC | :05:03. | :05:04.
Cornwall this evening. Goodbye. Heavy downpours in places tonight | :05:05. | :05:27.
but strong winds and with the tides peaking again, still | :05:28. | :05:28. |
