The Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has apologised this afternoon

for failing a family from Cornwall who lost their son to sepsis.

Mr Hunt was speaking at a private service in Truro

organised by Melissa Mead, whose little boy William was just

A tribute, but also an apology to the Mead family.

And I've come here today to say sorry.

Because this weekend, William should have been enjoying

the beautiful Cornish sunshine with his parents.

And because we - I as Health Secretary,

the Government, the NHS - let down William, Paul and Melissa.

We didn't spot his sepsis before it was too late.

Today's service was her way of saying thank you to all

I think are so many people who've been involved in the campaign,

Without the Government support, without the support

of all the organisations, we wouldn't be here where

we are today and have made the change that we have made.

Sepsis is a bacterial infection that attacks the organs and body tissues,

killing 44,000 people in the UK every year.

Today was also about raising awareness for its victims.

I think for the family, and for other families of children

who've died in the South West, of little Sam Morrish and,

of course, Charlie Jermyn, this is about taking William's legacy,

taking Sam and Charlie's legacies, and turning them into lasting

Evidence of William's lasting legacy.

Even Jeremy Hunt now carries a sepsis symptoms awareness card.

Maintaining high police visibility on the streets of Devon and Cornwall

can't continue indefinately, according to the Police Federation.

It comes as the force annouced members of the public may see

an increase in patrols and more armed officers as a response

to Wednesday's terror attack in Westminster.

It's not something that can be achieved for a long-term response,

due to the numbers of police officers there are.

We've had a severe cut to the numbers and we haven't

got sufficient police officers for that be sustainable.

The threat level hasn't increased, and this will just be a response for

reassurance for the public, based on what happened in London.

But, no, I don't think that's sustainable.

A leisure centre in Exeter that's been closed for over

a month after a major fire will partially reopen tonight.

The blaze broke out in the sauna of the Riverside Centre and people

were evacuated as the building filled with smoke.

The sports hall reopens for a boxing event this evening,

whilst no date has still been set for the swimming pool.

Rugby, and it was a good day for all our sides!

The Exeter Chiefs continued their good form against Sale.

Windy conditions made it diffcult, but the hosts took it 30-25.

In the Championship, Jersey beat league leaders London Irish 15-11.

And in National One, it was tries aplenty at Plymouth Albion,

Football, and it was a thrilling South West derby in

Exeter City came back from 3-1 down after 90 minutes,

with two goals in injury time to draw 3-3 away at Yeovil Town.

And in the National League, Torquay drew at Wrexham.

Now, many of you have been fundraising this week,

and last night Comic Relief raised over ?71 million!

In the run up to Red Nose Day, our presenters here at

BBC South West went head to head in a Great British Bake Off

style challenge to raise money for the charity.

Their task was to make and decorate a Victoria sponge.

Let's take a look at the weather now, and Bee has our forcast.
