Good evening. Thursday brought rain to pretty much all of the UK,

0:00:020:00:05

but the winds were the story.

0:00:050:00:06

Severe gales through the Irish Sea really whipped up some large waves

0:00:060:00:10

and caused some power outages.

0:00:100:00:11

There's a potential for more severe gales on Friday.

0:00:110:00:14

So more conditions like this. Possibly slightly different areas.

0:00:140:00:18

For the weekend, it might well quieten down. Not as active weather.

0:00:180:00:21

Still a little bit of rain and strong winds around,

0:00:210:00:23

but we might see some chillier mornings and more sunshine.

0:00:230:00:26

But not for long.

0:00:260:00:28

It's back to the wind and rain early next week and from the middle

0:00:280:00:32

of the week onwards, we might start to return to that colder,

0:00:320:00:37

and more settled weather that we had just last week before things

0:00:370:00:40

turned much more unsettled.

0:00:400:00:42

That's still looking on the cards.

0:00:420:00:44

But at the moment, the weather fronts, the bands of cloud,

0:00:440:00:46

they're lined up from Iberia right the way out to the east coast

0:00:460:00:49

of the United States. So we've got further bands of rain yet to come.

0:00:490:00:53

We've certainly had a good,

0:00:530:00:55

severe gale from this low pressure through Thursday.

0:00:550:00:57

We've got another winding itself up.

0:00:570:00:59

There are amber warnings out for northern France.

0:00:590:01:02

That looks really stormy here.

0:01:020:01:03

It could well also bring some severe gale-force winds to

0:01:030:01:07

the southern half of the UK.

0:01:070:01:08

So, Friday may dawn on a fairly decent note with some sunshine.

0:01:080:01:11

It might stay that way in the north.

0:01:110:01:13

But already, through the morning, the winds are whipping up in

0:01:130:01:16

the south-west bringing in that heavy rain.

0:01:160:01:18

Really quite heavy rain for a time as well.

0:01:180:01:20

Let's focus, though, on those winds that we've been talking about.

0:01:200:01:23

The potential is there for the Channel Islands,

0:01:230:01:25

the south coast, gusts to 70mph which will cause some disruption.

0:01:250:01:29

50mph inland.

0:01:290:01:31

And then also 50mph inland across south-eastern areas,

0:01:310:01:34

East Anglia, Lincolnshire later.

0:01:340:01:36

That's likely to cause some disruption in these areas.

0:01:360:01:38

Could even be some snow over the Welsh mountains as well.

0:01:380:01:42

So it's a really active weather day on Friday.

0:01:420:01:44

If you have plans, stay tuned to the forecast,

0:01:440:01:46

the warnings are on the website.

0:01:460:01:47

Through the night, that low pressure transfers to Scotland,

0:01:470:01:50

parts of Northern Ireland.

0:01:500:01:51

We've got another low pressure just drifting towards the south.

0:01:510:01:54

So we could have some more rain

0:01:540:01:55

across southern counties on Saturday.

0:01:550:01:58

Another storm for France.

0:01:580:01:59

It looks a wetter day for Scotland.

0:01:590:02:01

But, again, away from those areas,

0:02:010:02:04

mild but it still looks mostly dry.

0:02:040:02:06

And we can say that about Sunday.

0:02:060:02:08

The rain hopefully staying offshore of Eastern Scotland.

0:02:080:02:10

A bit breezy here, but drier.

0:02:100:02:12

There's the potential for some rain

0:02:120:02:14

across southern counties of England.

0:02:140:02:15

But, at the moment, elsewhere, despite having a chilly,

0:02:150:02:18

frosty start, it looks fairly decent.

0:02:180:02:20

And that ridge of high pressure takes us into the start of

0:02:200:02:22

the new week.

0:02:220:02:23

But this next big area of low pressure,

0:02:230:02:26

which dominates most of the Atlantic, is starting to take over.

0:02:260:02:29

The difference is it's starting to be blocked by these easterly winds

0:02:290:02:33

and high pressure across Scandinavia.

0:02:330:02:35

So it'll be a slow progress that that weather front makes

0:02:350:02:38

through Monday and into Tuesday.

0:02:380:02:40

Coming into the colder air, so some snow on its forward edge,

0:02:400:02:43

potentially. And several hours of wet weather.

0:02:430:02:45

Fairly strong winds as well with showers following.

0:02:450:02:48

But what we'll find through the middle part of the week is

0:02:480:02:50

that the low pressure is progressively steered towards

0:02:500:02:54

the north-west of the UK,

0:02:540:02:55

which means they'll have less influence on our weather, less wind,

0:02:550:02:58

less rain as this high pressure re-establishes itself with

0:02:580:03:02

its cold, dense air.

0:03:020:03:04

So that will block our weather fronts from moving in to

0:03:040:03:07

the north and the west

0:03:070:03:08

and the cold, easterly winds will ensure that we see

0:03:080:03:11

a return to frosts and potentially some fog with lighter winds.

0:03:110:03:15

And, of course, some sunshine.

0:03:150:03:16

But, eventually, it will become a cloudy high, we think,

0:03:160:03:19

so there won't be as much sunshine around.

0:03:190:03:21

So it starts mild, wet and windy.

0:03:210:03:22

We've got that quieter weekend and eventually the colder weather

0:03:220:03:26

winning through by the end of next week.

0:03:260:03:28

Bye-bye.
