Hello. We're forecasting a change in the wind direction this week. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
It's eventually going to be coming out of the east - | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
that means colder weather for all of us. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
It'll take time before it turns colder, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
I think Thursday, Friday is when we might even have some light | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
flurries of snow here and there. Nothing too dramatic, | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
we're not going to be building snowmen or anything like that, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
at least at this stage. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
In the short term we've got a window of clearer weather across the UK, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
so that means that Monday morning pretty chilly, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
in fact frosty in many areas and some mist and fog. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
We'll talk about that rain in a minute. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
The main message for Monday morning is the dense fog, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:40
and it could well be very dense in some areas across central | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
and south-eastern parts of England. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
And then that fog is going to disperse, the winds will be | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
picking up and the rain will start to sweep in to these western areas. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:53
I say sweep in, actually it's going to be moving pretty slowly | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
into western parts of the UK. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
Eastern areas, if you live in London, Hull, say Edinburgh, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
these areas will stay dry all through the course of the afternoon, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:05
and then by the time we get to the evening | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
that rain starts to march through. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:08
Even a little bit of snow mixing in there across the Pennines | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
and Grampians, but nothing too much, I don't think - | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
it's mostly across the hills. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
And then into Tuesday | 0:01:15 | 0:01:16
that weather front unfortunately stalls on the east coast of England, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:21
so that means a grey day for you, outbreaks of rain, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
pretty wet, I think, in the morning, and then sort of damp | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
in the afternoon, cos that rain will be sort of | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
fizzling away through the day - | 0:01:29 | 0:01:30
there'll be less and less of it as we go through the afternoon. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
The rest of the country much brighter but still, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
even where it brightens up across the west and the south-west here, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
there could be some showers around. So that's Tuesday. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42
Wednesday, another set of weather fronts approaches the UK, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
but they sort of stay offshore, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
so that means again a dry day for most of us on Wednesday. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:53
Look what's happening with the winds, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:54
and this is really a key here - they're coming in from | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
the east here, they're coming in from the south-west here, | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
down there I don't really know what's going on, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
but we're kind of in a transition period from something | 0:02:02 | 0:02:06
relatively mild to something a little bit colder. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
And what is happening is this area of high pressure, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
and it's called a blocking high in meteorology. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:17
It basically does what it says on the tin - it stops, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
it blocks the weather fronts from coming through. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
In fact, this area of low pressure will probably move towards | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
the west so they all sort of go backwards, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
and eventually the easterly winds win. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
So I'm going to run this Thursday and into Friday | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
all in one scene, one outlook. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
You can see the easterly winds really sort of pushing | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
the weather front, even pushing me away! | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
And it's going to feel cold. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
Now, temperatures by day, even into the weekend, we're talking about | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
three degrees at best, and with that also comes a lot of clouds. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
It's not going to be sunny and cold, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
it looks like it's going to be pretty cloudy and cold, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
and with that also comes the risk of some wintry flurries. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
And not just across the hills but in some of the towns and cities | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
throughout the Midlands, for example, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
but not an awful lot at this stage. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
And then into next week we expect this blocking high | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
to remain where it is. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:09
Once it settles here this high takes a lot to shift it, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
so the easterly winds will continue. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
So let's summarise early next week, then - | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
cold easterly winds, we know that, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
frosty mornings for sure, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
and a risk of some wintry flurries. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
That's it from me. Thanks for watching. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26 |
