Hello. It's getting towards the end of February, but it's certainly | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
felt much more like spring this weekend than winter. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
The reason is purely down to our wind direction. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
It's been coming off the Atlantic. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
Very mild air blanketing the country, but as you can see, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
the week ahead shows some changes. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
We'll see this cold air meandering its way south then northwards again. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:22
So we will see a seesawing in our temperatures as we head | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
through the next five days. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
The reason? We've got the jet stream, the zonal jet stream, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
which is driving our weather front from west to east. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
At times, we'll be in the cold air to the north and at times, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
the milder air to the south. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:38
But all the time, we'll see a daisy chain of weather fronts | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
delivering rain and, at times, wind across the UK. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
Through Monday, we start on a very blustery note for the east of | 0:00:44 | 0:00:48
Scotland, north-east England. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
Gusts of wind up to 50mph contending with some rain and some | 0:00:50 | 0:00:54
hill fog as well. There'll be some coastal and hill fog further south. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
So it'll be quite a grey start to the day. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
But, if the sun comes out in the south, it's here we could see | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
temperatures achieving perhaps 16 or 17 degrees Celsius. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
It's fresher air, though, by that stage across the north of Scotland. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
That's behind this weather front. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:11
We could see a touch of frost on Monday night into Tuesday morning | 0:01:11 | 0:01:15
across the glens of Scotland, whilst the mild air | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
holds firm across the southern half of the country. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
We've got the next low pressure starting to march in late Tuesday. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
But, at least between those two, for a time, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
there'll be some brighter weather around. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
As I say, though, temporarily, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:29
before that wet and windy weather returns to the north-west | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
and we've still got a lot of rain, or cloud at least, in the south. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
Gusts start to lift up in the north. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
That's because of the approach of this low pressure, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
which could give us our first spell of gales, or severe gales. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
That's the first area of low pressure we're watching. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
You can see how tightly packed the isobars are. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
Behind it, there's some really cold air nipping in. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
So some Arctic air, potentially. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
But still in the south, we've got that band of cloud | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
with outbreaks of rain and really quite mild air. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
The 7 in the north, with that Arctic air coming in, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
will feel considerably colder | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
because of course, as well as that, it's blowing a gale. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
Thursday is the next area of low pressure that we're watching. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
This could, again, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
be a very deep area of low pressure giving us gales or severe gales. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
Its track is uncertain, that is the main concern. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
But it could be that central and southern areas see | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
those gales on Thursday. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
And, because we've got that cold air established in the north, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
when the weather front comes in, we could well see some snow for a time. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
Not just as it comes in, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:26
but also on the north-westerly wind following on behind. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
We're into the colder air by the end of the week | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
as that low pressure whisks out the way into Scandinavia. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
Friday looks like probably | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
the driest and brightest day of the week. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
It starts on a cold note, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
temperatures won't be exceptionally high, only 7 to 10 degrees Celsius, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
but with lighter winds and sunshine, not too bad. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
But already by Friday we've got that next weather front not too far away. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:51
So looking further ahead, this pattern of our meandering jet stream | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
and our mild and cold air continues out to day ten as well. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
So that means the weather will continue to be changeable | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
with spells of wet and windy weather into the north-west. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
When we've got the brighter spells, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
the lower temperatures, it could look like this. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
When we've got the milder air, leaden skies, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
a lot of cloud and some rain. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
At times, there will be further spells of windy weather with | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
some gales, potentially. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
But temperatures will be higher, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
so we'll continue that seesaw as we go through to the end of the period. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
Plenty going on, very changeable weather. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
