Hello. If you saw the news earlier this week you will have

0:00:020:00:04

seen all of that snow across the northeast of the United States

0:00:040:00:07

which then pushed its way into Eastern Canada.

0:00:070:00:09

That was Storm Stella,

0:00:090:00:11

now moving away from North America.

0:00:110:00:13

It's heading across the Atlantic,

0:00:130:00:15

heading our way but it's not going to be

0:00:150:00:16

anything like it was in North America,

0:00:160:00:18

it's mostly going to be rain,

0:00:180:00:19

and it's being pushed by this fairly flat

0:00:190:00:22

jet stream. It's a zonal flow, that's

0:00:220:00:24

what we call it when it's a fairly flat jet.

0:00:240:00:26

As it moves into the UK it's going to be

0:00:260:00:28

a spell of wind and rain.

0:00:280:00:30

There will be some snow

0:00:300:00:31

but it's really only over the higher ground

0:00:310:00:33

in Scotland. A bit of rain in the northwest.

0:00:330:00:35

The further south you are, after a

0:00:350:00:37

bright start it'll tend to cloud over

0:00:370:00:38

into the afternoon but it should stay dry.

0:00:380:00:40

12 or 13 in the London area,

0:00:400:00:42

7s, 8s and 9s across Scotland.

0:00:420:00:44

Through Friday evening there's

0:00:440:00:46

plenty more rain to be had in the

0:00:460:00:47

northwest of the UK.

0:00:470:00:48

Some gets across to the eastern side

0:00:480:00:51

but it shouldn't be too heavy

0:00:510:00:52

not too persistent, but some rain nonetheless.

0:00:520:00:55

As we head towards dawn on Saturday

0:00:550:00:57

it's 8 or 9 degrees quite widely,

0:00:570:00:59

but with the clearer skies across

0:00:590:01:01

the Northern Isles we could go down to

0:01:010:01:03

around about freezing.

0:01:030:01:04

Through Saturday we've still got this

0:01:040:01:06

flow coming out of the Atlantic and still

0:01:060:01:08

a fair number of isobars on the chart

0:01:080:01:10

so it's going to be a windy weekend for many,

0:01:100:01:13

and that'll be a key feature of things

0:01:130:01:15

across pretty much all parts.

0:01:150:01:17

There will be some rain to be had

0:01:170:01:18

but most of the rain on Saturday looks to be

0:01:180:01:20

in the north and west of the UK.

0:01:200:01:22

Some gets across the Pennines

0:01:220:01:23

but not a great deal. Some parts of the

0:01:230:01:25

southeast and northeast should stay dry.

0:01:250:01:27

9 or 10 degrees in Scotland.

0:01:270:01:30

Could go as high as 15, maybe 16

0:01:300:01:32

in the southeast.

0:01:320:01:33

As we head through Saturday evening

0:01:330:01:35

and on to Sunday, still weather fronts

0:01:350:01:37

coming in from the Atlantic.

0:01:370:01:38

This broad warm sector Saturday night

0:01:380:01:40

into Sunday should keep temperatures up a bit

0:01:400:01:42

but it's still going to be very windy out there,

0:01:420:01:44

lots of isobars on the chart.

0:01:440:01:46

Again, on Sunday, a windy day and

0:01:460:01:48

there'll be some rain to be had

0:01:480:01:49

but again it's mainly

0:01:490:01:51

in the western side of the UK will see

0:01:510:01:53

the heaviest of the rainfall.

0:01:530:01:54

Head further east

0:01:540:01:56

and the rain is light and patchy.

0:01:560:01:57

Some places may well stay dry.

0:01:570:01:59

There should be a few breaks in that cloud,

0:01:590:02:01

particularly in the east of the Pennines.

0:02:010:02:03

On to Monday and a weak weather front just

0:02:030:02:05

drapes its way across

0:02:050:02:06

southern-most counties of England,

0:02:060:02:08

so it will be a cloudy affair here with some

0:02:080:02:10

outbreaks of rain and a bit of a breeze as well.

0:02:100:02:12

Further north, a scattering of showers on and off

0:02:120:02:15

but some spells of sunshine as well

0:02:150:02:17

and maybe a bit more of persistent rain

0:02:170:02:19

creeping its way into the far northwest

0:02:190:02:21

later in the day. As we head into Tuesday,

0:02:210:02:24

another weak weather front drifting its way

0:02:240:02:26

in from the Atlantic.

0:02:260:02:27

A fair number of isobars on the chart and that'll keep

0:02:270:02:29

things quite breezy.

0:02:290:02:30

That weather front will bring some rain

0:02:300:02:32

with it but it's all drifting its way

0:02:320:02:34

ever eastwards, followed by sunny spells

0:02:340:02:36

and a scattering of showers, those temperatures

0:02:360:02:38

coming down, only single figures for many.

0:02:380:02:40

We looked at the jet stream earlier on, it was

0:02:400:02:44

quite flat coming out across the Atlantic

0:02:440:02:46

but as we looked towards the latter parts

0:02:460:02:48

of next week it looks like it'll be digging

0:02:480:02:50

its way south then heading back north.

0:02:500:02:52

This is what we call a meridional pattern.

0:02:520:02:54

High pressure may develop

0:02:540:02:56

across the UK

0:02:560:02:57

which will help settle things down.

0:02:570:02:59

The jet stream is driven by temperature

0:02:590:03:01

contrasts between different air masses,

0:03:010:03:03

the colder Polar air to the north and

0:03:030:03:06

the much warmer tropical air to the south.

0:03:060:03:08

Just a hint that the southeast might be

0:03:080:03:10

on the warm side of the jet

0:03:100:03:11

whereas the bulk of the UK later next week

0:03:110:03:13

looks like it will be on the cold side.

0:03:130:03:15

But at least it looks that bit drier, with high pressure in charge,

0:03:150:03:18

and there should be some sunshine as well.

0:03:180:03:20

But with the sunshine by daytime it means we are looking at some

0:03:200:03:22

rather chilly nights by the end of next week.

0:03:220:03:25

Gardeners take note cos the frost could well be quite widespread.
