26/03/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. As British summertime arrives,

the weather's apparently already got there first.

Some parts of the UK, it felt like summertime on Saturday,

no more so than across parts of eastern Scotland.

This beautiful shot in Aboyne,

where the temperature reached the dizzy heights of 19 degrees.

Why the fine weather? We've got a huge block in the atmosphere.

It's like a boulder in the stream with the jet stream being diverted

away from the UK and beneath that block

we've got a large area of high pressure.

That's keeping these rain-bearing

weather fronts well at bay.

So the fine weather continues through Sunday,

with plenty more lovely sunshine.

Quite a cool breeze still

around the southern flank

of that high-pressure across southern areas,

so out of the sun and in the breeze

it feels quite cool.

But further north, the winds are

virtually non-existent,

so against the highest temperatures

will be across Scotland,

particularly the Western Highlands,

nudging 18 or 19 degrees,

a bit cooler further east.

Certainly along the North Sea coasts

with the breeze off the sea

it will feel distinctly fresh.

Whereas further west, temperatures higher.

But widely we're up into the low to mid teens.

Though there will be that breeze

across southern areas.

And that will make it feel distinctly fresh

if you're out of the sun.

That breeze continues into the night.

Weather-wise, another dry one coming up.

There will be areas of mist

and low cloud forming, particularly across

some northern and eastern areas.

Another chilly one,

temperatures widely down to single figures.

Across some parts of rural northern Britain,

we could see a touch of frost,

particularly in the glens of Scotland.

We will see some changes in the weather

in the early part of next week,

with low pressure beginning

to nudge slowly towards us.

I think on Monday it stays mostly dry.

A bit more cloud around in some places,

that low cloud will take some shifting

across parts of north-east England

and eastern Scotland.

In the sunshine, again pretty warm,

mid, possibly high teens.

Where the low cloud sticks, no more than 8 or 9.

By Tuesday, fronts are beginning

to make inroads across the UK.

Some uncertainty about the timing of this.

It will be an erratic process.

Some showery rain turning up

across more southern and western areas

during the course of Tuesday.

Probably one more dry day across the north.

Temperatures, the only brighter spell,

despite some showers, still doing pretty well,

up into the mid teens.

It's only by Wednesday it looks as if

the Atlantic is taking over

with this large area of low pressure

sending fronts in our direction.

I think most of the oomph from those fronts

will be more northern and western parts

of the UK by this stage,

so some heavy bursts here and quite a gusty wind.

But only patchy rain further south and east.

Still some dry spells and again

in any brightness, with the southerly winds,

temperatures will do pretty well,

up into the high teens in some spots.

This is Thursday's picture.

Fronts clearing away from the far north,

wetter weather here for a time.

Behind that, skies brighten again.

Again, if you can avoid the showers,

get out of the breeze, in the sunshine,

it's still going to feel pretty warm.

The jet stream's beginning to wake up again.

Coming in off the Atlantic,

this big dip in the jet stream

is where we'll see most of the showers

as we end the week.

It'll be a temporary blip, I think.

I showery start to April, it will be cooler than it has been,

but he does look as if, later on,

as we go into the following week,

high pressure might begin to build in again,

settling the weather down, particularly in the south.
