0:00:03 > 0:00:08Welcome to Cash In The Attic. We search out your hidden treasures and sells them at auction.
0:00:08 > 0:00:12Today I'm in Wales and I've stopped off at one of the largest medieval
0:00:12 > 0:00:16fortresses in western Europe, the fantastic Caerphilly Castle.
0:00:17 > 0:00:23The castle was built in the 13th century as a powerful symbol of medieval Anglo-Norman rule.
0:00:23 > 0:00:27Stretching over 30 acres, it was designed to provide protection from the Welsh,
0:00:27 > 0:00:34although in 1316 it wasn't enough to stop an army of 10,000 Welshmen trying to capture it.
0:00:34 > 0:00:39So let's hope we find plenty of items to pull in those pounds at auction.
0:01:00 > 0:01:05Coming up on today's Cash In The Attic, a house jam-packed with collectibles.
0:01:05 > 0:01:07There's so much stuff in here.
0:01:07 > 0:01:10It's like an Aladdin's cave, isn't it?
0:01:11 > 0:01:14A slightly disorientated expert...
0:01:14 > 0:01:15Which way's the antiques? Hmm?
0:01:15 > 0:01:18That way? You're not interested, are you?
0:01:18 > 0:01:21And some in-depth auction analysis.
0:01:21 > 0:01:25Did you see the buyer? He's got very thick glasses.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27Yeah, it explains a lot.
0:01:27 > 0:01:31Let's hope we'll all still be smiling when the final hammer falls.
0:01:36 > 0:01:41This semi in the heart of south Wales is home to professional singer Karina Warrington.
0:01:41 > 0:01:45Karina is an auction addict with a real passion for antiques and,
0:01:45 > 0:01:50having lived in this house for seven years, the rooms are overflowing.
0:01:50 > 0:01:53But now she's planning to downsize to a smaller property.
0:01:53 > 0:02:00So, with help from her sister, Catherine, a busy working mum, it's time for a clear-out.
0:02:00 > 0:02:05Hello, Jules. Mr Jonty, how are you, sir? You've brought me to your next of the woods, haven't you?
0:02:05 > 0:02:07I certainly have. Wales - always full of surprises.
0:02:07 > 0:02:12What I've got for you here is a lovely lady, Karina, and her sister who are hoping for a bit of cash.
0:02:12 > 0:02:16Rightio. Now, no surprise being Welsh, she's a bit of a singer,
0:02:16 > 0:02:22so you may find yourself in front of a karaoke machine a bit later. Karaoke? Bad memories.
0:02:22 > 0:02:27Well, I can't sing a note, but pound notes, Jonty, that's the order the day. That's your job.
0:02:27 > 0:02:32So why don't you start having a little rummage round and I'll go and meet the girls? Let's go inside.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37Hello, you two. Hi. Hello, you must be Karina? I am.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40Hello, Karina, and Catherine, obviously. That's right, hello.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43Looking around this place, it's like an Aladdin's cave!
0:02:43 > 0:02:47Yeah, or Steptoe's back yard, depends how you look at it.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50It looks like you've emptied every auction house in the county to fill this place up.
0:02:50 > 0:02:52We've gone a certain way towards it.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55Now, why have you called in Cash In The Attic?
0:02:55 > 0:03:00Well, I thought it was time to declutter, because I'm planning on downsizing a bit.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03So you're thinking of moving home to somewhere a bit smaller? Yes.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06And you've been roped in to help out with this mammoth task. I have, yes.
0:03:06 > 0:03:10Just looking around me, there's so much stuff in here. My goodness me.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13I get the feeling you are a compulsive hoarder?
0:03:13 > 0:03:15I don't know what makes you think that!
0:03:15 > 0:03:20And you, I suspect, are the exact opposite. I am. I am the complete opposite.
0:03:20 > 0:03:23I like space. Are you the ruthless one?
0:03:23 > 0:03:25Yes. Yes, I think I am.
0:03:25 > 0:03:27What are you hoping to use the money for?
0:03:27 > 0:03:31Well, because Cath's been so helpful, I thought it would be nice
0:03:31 > 0:03:36to treat her and myself, so we're planning on a pampering weekend.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39So a bit of pampering at a spa?
0:03:39 > 0:03:40Yes, that was my idea.
0:03:40 > 0:03:45Oh, I see! So it's your stuff and your cash and it's your idea.
0:03:45 > 0:03:49She'd only buy more stuff otherwise, so I'm just saving her from herself. Thank you!
0:03:49 > 0:03:51How much do you think that's going to set you back?
0:03:51 > 0:03:53I think it'll be a few hundred pounds,
0:03:53 > 0:03:58because we want to stay overnight and go down Cheltenham and sort of, you know...
0:03:58 > 0:04:02Cheltenham or Bath, somewhere like that. Going posh? Exactly, yeah. The auction houses...
0:04:02 > 0:04:06Right, so how much exactly, then?
0:04:06 > 0:04:08We were hoping for about ?500.
0:04:08 > 0:04:10500 quid. Well, there's a lot of stuff in here.
0:04:10 > 0:04:14If you sold everything for ?1 a piece I'm sure you'd probably manage it,
0:04:14 > 0:04:19but Jonty is man to tell us exactly how much you'll get. He's been having a good look already.
0:04:19 > 0:04:24Let's go and see what he's found and see if we can get you towards ?500 for a nice girly weekend. Excellent.
0:04:24 > 0:04:26Super. Yeah? Come on, then.
0:04:27 > 0:04:33Raising money for a relaxing spa break sounds like a fantastic idea, but I have a feeling Karina is going
0:04:33 > 0:04:37to find it hard to choose which items to part with.
0:04:37 > 0:04:40One man who can help our ladies decide what to save and what to sell
0:04:40 > 0:04:45is our very own antiques expert, Jonty Hearnden.
0:04:45 > 0:04:47Ah...I've found one of your pets!
0:04:47 > 0:04:50Not just the birds next door squawking away.
0:04:50 > 0:04:54No, I've got this fabulous bulldog here. You're a bit of a collector.
0:04:54 > 0:04:58Yes. Well, it's made by Beswick which is a fantastic collecting name.
0:04:58 > 0:05:01Where do you buy most of your collectibles from? I go to auction a lot.
0:05:01 > 0:05:03I bought him from an antique fair.
0:05:03 > 0:05:06OK. Do you remember what you paid for him?
0:05:06 > 0:05:08I'm not sure if it was about ?20.
0:05:08 > 0:05:13OK. Well, our bulldog here was issued by the factory right towards the end of its closure.
0:05:13 > 0:05:18It closed at the end of 2002, but he was only issued from 1999,
0:05:18 > 0:05:21so for a very short period of time,
0:05:21 > 0:05:26and the great thing about collecting Beswick is the attention to detail.
0:05:26 > 0:05:28Now, our bulldog here is great,
0:05:28 > 0:05:33I want to put him to one side, because I've also got some sheep as well.
0:05:33 > 0:05:36Ah, no surprise being in Wales, Jonty.
0:05:36 > 0:05:39Well, have a look at the black-faced sheep here.
0:05:39 > 0:05:43Now, he was issued for 40 years,
0:05:43 > 0:05:48so in 1962 he first came on the market, which will give you some indication about value. Yeah.
0:05:48 > 0:05:52Not so high as a consequence cos there'll be a lot of them around,
0:05:52 > 0:05:55but I found another little sheep here as well. A little lamb.
0:05:55 > 0:06:01He was first designed by the big name from Beswick, Arthur Gredington.
0:06:01 > 0:06:08He was one of their chief designers and he oversaw lots of fantastic work.
0:06:08 > 0:06:10Again, he was around for 40-odd years.
0:06:10 > 0:06:14That's the reason why I'm going to put all of our collection together,
0:06:14 > 0:06:17so we've got our bulldog and our three sheep.
0:06:17 > 0:06:22Put them into one lot and ballpark, sort of, ?50 to ?80 for the collection. That's not bad.
0:06:22 > 0:06:25That's my manicure sorted!
0:06:25 > 0:06:27The money's being spent already! Yeah!
0:06:27 > 0:06:33That's all you're concerned about. Never mind the collection, it's what you're gonna get for it, isn't it?
0:06:33 > 0:06:38That's 50 quid or so. Not a bad start. Good. There's a lot in this house to look through. I've seen.
0:06:38 > 0:06:42Where shall we go, back this way? OK. Come on. Come on, then.
0:06:42 > 0:06:48?50 is a great start to today's search, but with a ?500 target, we've a long way to go yet.
0:06:48 > 0:06:52The girls are already planning their pampering treatments,
0:06:52 > 0:06:55so they're keen to roll up their sleeves and get rummaging.
0:06:55 > 0:06:58The search gets under way and, in the dining room, I spot this
0:06:58 > 0:07:03lovely little piano stool, which Jonty thinks could bag us ?30 to ?40 at auction.
0:07:03 > 0:07:07And clutterphobic Catherine wastes no time in spotting things
0:07:07 > 0:07:11that she thinks Karina should be getting rid of.
0:07:11 > 0:07:13Jonty!
0:07:13 > 0:07:16Hi, what about this? What have you got there?
0:07:16 > 0:07:22I say. She looks like a rather plump lady carrying a samovar.
0:07:22 > 0:07:24Do you know what a samovar is? No.
0:07:24 > 0:07:29It's Russian and it's a container for keeping your liquid warm, often tea.
0:07:29 > 0:07:32All right. OK, and that's Russian.
0:07:32 > 0:07:35If we look on the underside here, this is Russian too.
0:07:35 > 0:07:37So our little plump lady here...
0:07:37 > 0:07:42She is a bit. She's not particularly old but she would have been made when
0:07:42 > 0:07:48Russia itself was under tight Communist rule, so, maybe 20, 30, 40 years ago. That kind of ballpark.
0:07:48 > 0:07:51It's difficult to say exactly when. Yeah.
0:07:51 > 0:07:58But certain Russian fine art is hugely increasing in value and there's one reason for that
0:07:58 > 0:08:01and that's because the Russians themselves are starting to buy it back.
0:08:01 > 0:08:03Have you any idea where she bought this?
0:08:03 > 0:08:07I haven't got a clue, but at a guess probably an auction, knowing Karina!
0:08:07 > 0:08:10So let's consider value for our rather jolly lady here.
0:08:10 > 0:08:13Erm... I reckon we're looking at ?40 to ?60, I reckon.
0:08:13 > 0:08:15Really! That much? Yeah.
0:08:15 > 0:08:17Excellent. It's a good little find.
0:08:17 > 0:08:21Yeah. I'll pop her back down there for safekeeping and we'll go this way.
0:08:21 > 0:08:24Lovely, keep looking.
0:08:24 > 0:08:28I don't think she's the most attractive lady to have on your mantelpiece.
0:08:28 > 0:08:30It'll probably be a good one to get rid of out of the house.
0:08:30 > 0:08:34I think Karina will be more than happy to see the back of her.
0:08:34 > 0:08:37Catherine might not be her biggest fan,
0:08:37 > 0:08:40but the jolly lady came with a rather jolly price tag,
0:08:40 > 0:08:42adding ?40 to ?60 towards today's target.
0:08:44 > 0:08:48Not even the garden shed goes unsearched today as I dig out this Victorian pine stepladder
0:08:48 > 0:08:53which Jonty estimates at between ?15 and ?25.
0:08:53 > 0:08:57The man himself finds this lovely, wooden jewellery box
0:08:57 > 0:09:03which is packed off to auction with a ?10 to ?20 price tag.
0:09:03 > 0:09:07We're progressing towards the ?500 that Karina and Catherine are hoping
0:09:07 > 0:09:09to raise for their spa trip together.
0:09:09 > 0:09:15Whilst the search continues, I take a few minutes out to find the cause of Karina's auction addiction.
0:09:15 > 0:09:20Anybody walking into your home is going to know you're something of an antique nut.
0:09:20 > 0:09:24Yeah. Where did it all begin?
0:09:24 > 0:09:29Well, my late fiance, Pat, and I used to be real, sort of, auction hounds
0:09:29 > 0:09:35and we'd love to get a bargain and Pat was great at restoration so we bought loads of furniture.
0:09:35 > 0:09:38At one point, we had 11 wardrobes in the house.
0:09:38 > 0:09:4211 wardrobes?! Yes. In this house? In this house. Where did you put them all?
0:09:42 > 0:09:45There were four in the front room at one point.
0:09:45 > 0:09:50So the plan was always to restore them and sell them, but because we were both
0:09:50 > 0:09:55sort of hoarders, we ended up really just keeping most of the furniture.
0:09:55 > 0:09:58And then when it got too full, we'd put some of it in storage. Yep.
0:09:58 > 0:10:02And then we'd have more space, so we'd go to more auctions and buy more.
0:10:02 > 0:10:05Now, tragedy did strike your life, didn't it, a few years ago?
0:10:05 > 0:10:11Yeah, it was Boxing Day last year that he had a heart attack and passed away,
0:10:11 > 0:10:13that was very sudden and unexpected.
0:10:13 > 0:10:18Are you going to find it quite difficult to let go of some of these items that you found together?
0:10:18 > 0:10:23Um, I am certainly attached to quite a few of them.
0:10:23 > 0:10:29But because we bought a lot of them with a view to selling it on, I don't feel so sentimental about it
0:10:29 > 0:10:34and also I just can't take everything with me, so I do have to be a bit ruthless.
0:10:34 > 0:10:39The plan is that you are going to move, downsize - are you going to stay in and around Caerphilly?
0:10:39 > 0:10:44I'm not 100% sure - I wouldn't mind staying either in Caerphilly or on the outskirts.
0:10:44 > 0:10:48There's a lot going on in Caerphilly. There's good nightlife.
0:10:48 > 0:10:53Live music. Karaoke. I suppose with all the music going on here,
0:10:53 > 0:10:56it's no surprise that you are a bit of a musician, aren't you?
0:10:56 > 0:10:59Tell us a bit more about your singing career.
0:10:59 > 0:11:02Well, I did start off with the karaoke. I'm afraid
0:11:02 > 0:11:05I didn't like giving the mic back at the end of the night!
0:11:05 > 0:11:09So I joined a local band for a short while
0:11:09 > 0:11:14and then from there I just went on to do it on my own.
0:11:14 > 0:11:20And just loved it, really. So, now you're full-time singing? Yeah. That's my job.
0:11:20 > 0:11:24It's a great job. That's fantastic. I get paid to do something I love doing.
0:11:24 > 0:11:28That's what everybody wants to do. Have you heard Jonty singing?
0:11:28 > 0:11:33No. Is he good? Hopefully you'll never get the chance to find out. We could have done a duet!
0:11:33 > 0:11:35The good thing is, he's around and about rummaging.
0:11:35 > 0:11:41Let's see if he's found any more to get you and your sister tucked up in a spa. Come on.
0:11:41 > 0:11:45It sounds like Karina thoroughly deserves a bit of pampering,
0:11:45 > 0:11:50so we need to crack on with today's search and raise that ?500,
0:11:50 > 0:11:53although our expert seems to have got a little lost.
0:11:53 > 0:11:55Which way to the antiques?
0:11:55 > 0:11:57That way? You're not interested, are you?
0:11:57 > 0:12:02Oh, dear, Jonty. At least Karina's got her eye on the task today.
0:12:02 > 0:12:04Jonty?
0:12:06 > 0:12:10Oh, I say, a little wall clock here, OK.
0:12:10 > 0:12:13I reckon this was an auction purchase. How did you guess?
0:12:13 > 0:12:20What it is, Pat always had a bit of a thing for clocks, he liked clocks, so we bought a few from the auction.
0:12:20 > 0:12:23How many did you buy in all?
0:12:23 > 0:12:25About a dozen or so. A dozen?
0:12:25 > 0:12:27OK. And have you still got them all?
0:12:27 > 0:12:31Most of them, yes. I nearly gave one away but most of them.
0:12:31 > 0:12:35So this really should go to the auction sale? It really should.
0:12:35 > 0:12:39Have we got the extra finial along back here, have we got that?
0:12:39 > 0:12:42I'm not sure if we've got it inside. Oh, we do. That's very good.
0:12:42 > 0:12:44OK. Here's one I made earlier.
0:12:44 > 0:12:48Good. OK, Yes. So, that's fine to be able to stick that on there.
0:12:48 > 0:12:53With that applied down at the bottom there, it's just going to make all the difference to the value. Yeah.
0:12:53 > 0:12:57So, I'm going to pop that back in there. Originally. If you look at the style of the clock,
0:12:57 > 0:13:00it's in the style of a Viennese wall clock,
0:13:00 > 0:13:04which really was a clock that was developed in Vienna and exported
0:13:04 > 0:13:08around the western world. Now, traditionally,
0:13:08 > 0:13:11your face here would be Roman numerals.
0:13:11 > 0:13:14And the dial would be enamelled.
0:13:14 > 0:13:16So again I'm going to look on the inside.
0:13:16 > 0:13:21And have a look there and, if you run your finger across there, can you feel it's relatively warm?
0:13:21 > 0:13:24Yes. That should be cold, it should be enamel.
0:13:24 > 0:13:25That's resin.
0:13:25 > 0:13:30So, it means that this clock is really of relatively late date,
0:13:30 > 0:13:34so it's probably even late '20s, early 1930s.
0:13:34 > 0:13:36Can you remember how much you paid for it?
0:13:36 > 0:13:39I can't remember exactly, but I think we got that at the same
0:13:39 > 0:13:44time as another clock and we got the pair for around ?28, I think.
0:13:44 > 0:13:48Wow, you are a magpie around the auction rooms, aren't you? Yeah.
0:13:48 > 0:13:53That's great because, value-wise, I suppose we're looking at 30, 40, maybe ?50. OK.
0:13:53 > 0:13:57It's all mounting up, isn't it? It certainly is. Come on, follow me. Thanks.
0:13:57 > 0:14:03I really like that clock and I do feel a bit sentimental about that because Pat got it working.
0:14:03 > 0:14:07It's been down since we had the room painted
0:14:07 > 0:14:11and it's just going to gather more dust, so it might as well go somewhere useful.
0:14:11 > 0:14:16That's the attitude, Karina! You're really getting the knack of this decluttering.
0:14:16 > 0:14:20Our search continues and Jonty spots this colourful painting
0:14:20 > 0:14:25which he estimates at being between ?20 and ?40.
0:14:25 > 0:14:30Meanwhile, in the living room, I've spotted a rather intriguing piece of furniture.
0:14:30 > 0:14:33This is quite an interesting thing - what's this?
0:14:33 > 0:14:35It's lovely. I think it's an old dentist cabinet.
0:14:35 > 0:14:38That's what I bought it as. Yeah.
0:14:38 > 0:14:44And it's got very shallow drawers here which I guess they could have used for their implements of torture!
0:14:44 > 0:14:46I'm guessing somebody would find this useful around the home.
0:14:46 > 0:14:49But I wouldn't like to say how much it's worth.
0:14:49 > 0:14:53The only man who knows that is Jonty, who I think is lurking somewhere. ..Jonty?
0:14:55 > 0:14:59Jonty, come in here a second. Karina says this is an old dental cabinet.
0:14:59 > 0:15:03It makes sense that it would be called a dentist cabinet because you've got all these tiny little
0:15:03 > 0:15:06drawers down below to keep all those instruments in.
0:15:06 > 0:15:08And we've got this big cupboard here.
0:15:08 > 0:15:10See all the storage?
0:15:11 > 0:15:13Stuffed full of bits and pieces.
0:15:13 > 0:15:17There you go. Handy for storage! I better close that up, quick.
0:15:17 > 0:15:20Full of all your stuff. Well, I can see the handle's been changed.
0:15:20 > 0:15:24It's moved from that position to there so it has been altered in its time.
0:15:24 > 0:15:28But if you look at the style, it has a sort of pre-war feel to it.
0:15:28 > 0:15:31A 1930s feel. It's a walnut carcass,
0:15:31 > 0:15:35and to be described as a dentist cabinet is a really good thing
0:15:35 > 0:15:37because it's just different.
0:15:37 > 0:15:40The market always loves something that's just slightly quirky,
0:15:40 > 0:15:42slightly different in style as well.
0:15:42 > 0:15:44This is very stylish at the moment, it's simple,
0:15:44 > 0:15:47It would fit almost anywhere in anybody's house.
0:15:47 > 0:15:50OK, Jonty, what sort of value would you place on this?
0:15:50 > 0:15:53Well, I suppose, ballpark is ?50 to ?80.
0:15:53 > 0:15:55Maybe more if two people want to fight for it.
0:15:55 > 0:15:57Brilliant. That's great.
0:15:57 > 0:16:00Would you be happy to put this in the auction? I would, yes.
0:16:00 > 0:16:03Good, well fingers crossed that will deliver at least 50 quid.
0:16:03 > 0:16:06And you know what? I'd spend more than that on it.
0:16:06 > 0:16:09Make me an offer! I think you've got a buyer already!
0:16:09 > 0:16:10There you go. Brilliant.
0:16:10 > 0:16:12I think that adds to our good start.
0:16:12 > 0:16:15Plenty more to look at, Jonty. Let's see what else we can find.
0:16:15 > 0:16:17Lead on.
0:16:17 > 0:16:19Let's see what else we can extract.
0:16:19 > 0:16:21I like it because it's so unusual.
0:16:21 > 0:16:24But I really haven't got room for all the furniture I've got.
0:16:24 > 0:16:27So maybe a dentist will find it handy?
0:16:27 > 0:16:30Put his scalpels in, or whatever they use!
0:16:31 > 0:16:36The dental cabinet has added a very tasty ?50 to ?80 to our kitty today.
0:16:36 > 0:16:38Catherine has been working hard as well,
0:16:38 > 0:16:43and spots this lovely drop-leaf table with barley twist legs in the hallway.
0:16:43 > 0:16:47Which Jonty thinks could make us ?20 to ?30 at auction.
0:16:47 > 0:16:50There are still plenty of collectibles to search through
0:16:50 > 0:16:52and while Karina and Jonty continue the hunt,
0:16:52 > 0:16:54I take the chance to catch up with Catherine
0:16:54 > 0:16:58and find out a bit more about her hoard-a-holic sister.
0:16:58 > 0:17:02Catherine, you're the ordered one in this relationship, aren't you?
0:17:02 > 0:17:05I think I am, yes!
0:17:05 > 0:17:09I mean, I get the sense that this business of decluttering
0:17:09 > 0:17:12is something that's going to really help Karina move on.
0:17:12 > 0:17:14Yeah. What kind of a man was he, Pat?
0:17:14 > 0:17:16He was a wonderful man, Pat was.
0:17:16 > 0:17:18He loved everything made of wood as you can tell,
0:17:18 > 0:17:22one of the reasons that she's got all those things around.
0:17:22 > 0:17:24He used to love restoring and fixing things.
0:17:24 > 0:17:27No matter where he went, everybody wanted to talk to him
0:17:27 > 0:17:30and he always had a good story to tell. Brilliant.
0:17:30 > 0:17:32Tell me about the singing.
0:17:32 > 0:17:35You accompany her as something of a roadie, is that right?
0:17:35 > 0:17:39I've been known to be a roadie, lift a couple of heavy speakers, yes!
0:17:39 > 0:17:41What kind of singer is she? Is she really popular?
0:17:41 > 0:17:44She's very good, to be honest. She does a mixture of things.
0:17:44 > 0:17:47Pop, she does '70s, '80s, '90s,
0:17:47 > 0:17:49country and western she loves as well.
0:17:49 > 0:17:52She does get the crowd going. She's really good.
0:17:52 > 0:17:54Very powerful voice she's got. Yeah.
0:17:54 > 0:17:56Now, the collecting -
0:17:56 > 0:17:58nay, hoarding -
0:17:58 > 0:18:02is something of a passion, my worry is that at the auction
0:18:02 > 0:18:05we're going to come back with more stuff than we took.
0:18:05 > 0:18:08It is a potential so I shall try and rein her in while she's there.
0:18:08 > 0:18:10I'll be the voice of conscience.
0:18:10 > 0:18:14There is clearly an awful lot of stuff to go through in this house.
0:18:14 > 0:18:17I don't think there's any time to waste, is there? No.
0:18:17 > 0:18:19Come on, then.
0:18:19 > 0:18:23No time to waste, indeed. We're nearing the end of today's search
0:18:23 > 0:18:27and Jonty has got his eye on one of Karina's collection of wardrobes.
0:18:27 > 0:18:29What about this wardrobe, what do you think?
0:18:29 > 0:18:32It's a lovely-looking wardrobe.
0:18:32 > 0:18:36But it's a little bit narrow for hangers of today, I'd guess.
0:18:36 > 0:18:40I don't know if they were different before, but it's quite a squash.
0:18:40 > 0:18:43To get things in you sort of have to push them down a bit.
0:18:43 > 0:18:45I see what you mean.
0:18:45 > 0:18:48Put in beautifully ironed clothes and they come out looking creased.
0:18:48 > 0:18:50So where did this come from?
0:18:50 > 0:18:54Well, I bought it from an auction. Don't tell me, an auction? Sorry!
0:18:54 > 0:18:58It was one of the first auctions that we went to. Myself and Pat.
0:18:58 > 0:19:02And there were generally two other people who used to go there
0:19:02 > 0:19:04on a regular basis.
0:19:04 > 0:19:05We got some great bargains.
0:19:05 > 0:19:09Well, this wardrobe was made about 100 years ago.
0:19:09 > 0:19:11It's Edwardian. It's mahogany.
0:19:11 > 0:19:14And if you look at the design work, look at all of this.
0:19:14 > 0:19:18All of this inlay work here and on the cornice
0:19:18 > 0:19:20is all replicating Georgian styles.
0:19:20 > 0:19:25So there was a look back, in Edwardian times,
0:19:25 > 0:19:27to Georgian designs from the 18th century.
0:19:27 > 0:19:31So it's their interpretation of that style, of that design.
0:19:31 > 0:19:33And how much did you pay for it? About ?5.
0:19:33 > 0:19:35A fiver? Yeah.
0:19:35 > 0:19:38That's outrageous! That's so cheap.
0:19:38 > 0:19:41I mean, at auction we're not talking a vast amount of money.
0:19:41 > 0:19:44Ballpark, really, it should be ?40 to ?60.
0:19:44 > 0:19:46Great. Not bad for a fiver investment.
0:19:46 > 0:19:48No, it isn't. Good profit.
0:19:48 > 0:19:50That's the kind of maths I like, Jonty.
0:19:50 > 0:19:54?40 to ?60 for the wardrobe is a great find.
0:19:54 > 0:19:58And downstairs, I've spotted another collection of figurines
0:19:58 > 0:20:01which I think could get us on to the home stretch for today's search.
0:20:02 > 0:20:05Guys?
0:20:05 > 0:20:06Come in over here.
0:20:08 > 0:20:12What's strange about this is that in a house full of such a varied range of stuff,
0:20:12 > 0:20:17there is clearly a theme emerging about horses.
0:20:17 > 0:20:20When we were kids, we had a couple of ponies,
0:20:20 > 0:20:22so I guess that's where the interest started.
0:20:22 > 0:20:25Jonty, anything of interest here for you?
0:20:25 > 0:20:28I'm seeing here that they're all Beswick as far as I can see.
0:20:28 > 0:20:32Is this your collection? You've gathered all this together?
0:20:32 > 0:20:34They weren't gifts or presents?
0:20:34 > 0:20:36No, unfortunately not!
0:20:36 > 0:20:40Really?! Which was your first purchase?
0:20:40 > 0:20:42The first one I bought was this one.
0:20:44 > 0:20:45Ah, that's very nice. OK.
0:20:45 > 0:20:48That's wonderful. Tell me about her.
0:20:48 > 0:20:50Cos I know it's a her.
0:20:50 > 0:20:55Her name is Another Bunch and she was one of a limited edition, I think.
0:20:55 > 0:21:00There was Warlord, was her stallion, and her foal, Another Star.
0:21:00 > 0:21:02Do you have Another Star?
0:21:02 > 0:21:06I do have Another Star, but she's a little bit battered.
0:21:06 > 0:21:09She's been through the wars. OK.
0:21:09 > 0:21:12When did you buy Another Bunch? I think it was about seven years ago.
0:21:12 > 0:21:14She was issued in 1997,
0:21:14 > 0:21:18and Another Star came out the following year.
0:21:18 > 0:21:22There are only 1,500 ever made of these.
0:21:22 > 0:21:25Do you remember how much you paid for this one? ?12.
0:21:25 > 0:21:28Wow. Because the market today, she's worth in excess of ?50.
0:21:28 > 0:21:31So you've done very well. Right, yeah!
0:21:31 > 0:21:36Do you have any ponies or horses with any damage in your collection?
0:21:36 > 0:21:39There's one...
0:21:39 > 0:21:42Oops! There was nearly another one, there!
0:21:42 > 0:21:46This one has actually been decapitated at some point.
0:21:46 > 0:21:48Can you see? Oh, I see, yeah.
0:21:48 > 0:21:52I glued her together and from a distance, she fits in with the others.
0:21:52 > 0:21:56From a collecting point of view, there's not much value in our Shire horse here.
0:21:56 > 0:21:58Have you ever considered their value?
0:21:58 > 0:22:01Have you ever summed it all up? Not really, no.
0:22:01 > 0:22:03I have to say, just looking across the shelf,
0:22:03 > 0:22:07we're talking, ?400 to ?600 worth of horses.
0:22:07 > 0:22:09Really?! ?400 to ?600?!
0:22:09 > 0:22:11Just for the horse collection?
0:22:11 > 0:22:13Just for the horse collection. It's fabulous.
0:22:13 > 0:22:17Would you be happy for all of this lot to go to auction?
0:22:17 > 0:22:21I would, yes. With the possible exception of Another Bunch.
0:22:21 > 0:22:23OK. Because she was my first. Right, OK.
0:22:23 > 0:22:29We were looking for about ?500 for you girls to go and have a lovely pampering weekend.
0:22:29 > 0:22:35Without that particular horse, the figure in the order of ?655.
0:22:35 > 0:22:38Excellent! Fabulous!
0:22:38 > 0:22:40Not bad, eh? And if you put the horse in,
0:22:40 > 0:22:42another 50 quid perhaps, so nearly ?705.
0:22:42 > 0:22:45We're going to be the most pampered sisters going!
0:22:45 > 0:22:47THAT is the idea!
0:22:47 > 0:22:50So, I think, quite an interesting collection of stuff, Jonty.
0:22:50 > 0:22:52Let's see what happens at the auction.
0:22:52 > 0:22:54Thank you very much!
0:22:54 > 0:22:58Well, our hard work searching Karina's treasure filled home
0:22:58 > 0:22:59has really paid off.
0:22:59 > 0:23:03We've got a fantastic haul of items to take to auction.
0:23:04 > 0:23:05We've got the dental cabinet,
0:23:05 > 0:23:08valued at between ?50 and ?80.
0:23:09 > 0:23:11The sheep and dog figurines by Beswick.
0:23:11 > 0:23:14Again with a combined estimate of between ?50 and ?80.
0:23:16 > 0:23:18And, the collection of Beswick horses,
0:23:18 > 0:23:22with a massive estimate of between ?350 and ?550.
0:23:23 > 0:23:25But, we'll have to wait and see
0:23:25 > 0:23:29whether Karina decides to bring her very first Beswick horse to auction too.
0:23:29 > 0:23:33With an estimate of ?50, will she be able to part with it?
0:23:34 > 0:23:38Still to come on Cash In The Attic...
0:23:38 > 0:23:40I'm a calming some pre-sale nerves.
0:23:40 > 0:23:43If you think you're nervous, he's really nervous cos it'll be his fault!
0:23:43 > 0:23:45It's always my fault!
0:23:45 > 0:23:48And we're hoping to find homes for all of our lots.
0:23:49 > 0:23:53You're quite happy to see this go? I'd be very glad to see this go.
0:23:53 > 0:23:56Will we have reached our target when the final hammer falls?
0:24:02 > 0:24:05It's been a week since we helped Karina Warrington and her sister Catherine
0:24:05 > 0:24:09rifle through Karina's somewhat cluttered home in Caerphilly,
0:24:09 > 0:24:11as we searched for antiques and collectibles
0:24:11 > 0:24:15they could sell at auction here in Wrexham.
0:24:15 > 0:24:18The idea is that Karina wants to spend about 500 quid
0:24:18 > 0:24:22treating her and her sister to a well-earned spa weekend.
0:24:22 > 0:24:25Let's hope the punters have come with money in their pockets,
0:24:25 > 0:24:28as we see their items go under the hammer.
0:24:28 > 0:24:31The auction house is filling up with eager bidders
0:24:31 > 0:24:35and I'm hoping the items will attract lots of worthy attention.
0:24:35 > 0:24:39One man with an eye for antiques is our expert Jonty Hearnden,
0:24:39 > 0:24:42who's already checking out how our items look in the saleroom.
0:24:44 > 0:24:47Hey, Jonty. Hi, how are you? All right, mate. How are you?
0:24:47 > 0:24:50Good, yeah. It looks like some of the stuff from the girls has arrived.
0:24:50 > 0:24:52Completely empty. Remember how full it was?
0:24:52 > 0:24:56Looking somewhat decluttered from the other day.
0:24:56 > 0:24:58Yes, the house was full, to say the very least.
0:24:58 > 0:25:01Busy is the word I'm going for.
0:25:01 > 0:25:04Some interesting items here today, not least all those horses.
0:25:04 > 0:25:07We've got a mixed bag, but you're absolutely right.
0:25:07 > 0:25:10The horses are the star of the show, the Beswick horses.
0:25:10 > 0:25:12I valued them as a group, but with Beswick,
0:25:12 > 0:25:16some people want individual lots, individual model numbers.
0:25:16 > 0:25:20As a consequence, the auctioneer has split them into individual lots,
0:25:20 > 0:25:22which allows the buyer to do just that.
0:25:22 > 0:25:26The big question is, did she bring the star of the horse collection?
0:25:26 > 0:25:28Another Bunch? Yeah, yeah, that would help.
0:25:28 > 0:25:30Well, all the stuff's here. Yep.
0:25:30 > 0:25:32Let's find out if the horse is here
0:25:32 > 0:25:35and let's find out, more importantly, if the girls are here!
0:25:35 > 0:25:40I certainly hope they are, as the bidders are already taking their seats.
0:25:40 > 0:25:42Let's hope they're feeling generous with the cash,
0:25:42 > 0:25:46especially when it comes to Karina and Catherine's collectibles.
0:25:46 > 0:25:48Ah, there you are!
0:25:48 > 0:25:50Hi! Good morning. Morning! How are we today?
0:25:50 > 0:25:52Fine, thank you. Very excited?
0:25:52 > 0:25:54Bit nervous. Why are you nervous?
0:25:54 > 0:25:57In case they don't sell for a huge amount of money!
0:25:57 > 0:25:59We're going to do so well today!
0:25:59 > 0:26:02If you think you're nervous, he's really nervous, cos it will be his fault.
0:26:02 > 0:26:04It's always my fault!
0:26:04 > 0:26:07Have you brought Another Bunch? I have. You have?! Yes.
0:26:07 > 0:26:09There he is, poking his head out behind us.
0:26:09 > 0:26:11Was that a difficult decision?
0:26:11 > 0:26:15Took a bit of soul-searching, but my sister talked me into it.
0:26:15 > 0:26:17A lot of nagging!
0:26:17 > 0:26:20You're thinking of spa treatments and massages and stuff!
0:26:20 > 0:26:23Selfish about it, yeah! We know where you're coming from!
0:26:23 > 0:26:27Have you seen some of your other stuff lurking around the auction room?
0:26:27 > 0:26:31Yes. There have been a few people looking at it as well, so that's a good sign.
0:26:31 > 0:26:34Well, we are heading for a spa weekend, we hope, with your items.
0:26:34 > 0:26:37Let's get on with the auction, shall we? Excellent!
0:26:37 > 0:26:41Remember, if you're planning on heading to your local auction house,
0:26:41 > 0:26:46be aware that commission and possible other charges will be added to your bill,
0:26:46 > 0:26:49so always check the details with the saleroom first.
0:26:49 > 0:26:52With a packed house, the auctioneer is in position.
0:26:52 > 0:26:55Right, good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
0:26:55 > 0:26:56We'll make a start.
0:26:56 > 0:26:58We take our places just in time
0:26:58 > 0:27:01as our first lot comes under the hammer.
0:27:01 > 0:27:04It's the first of a few Beswick lots for us today,
0:27:04 > 0:27:07so we're hoping there are plenty of collectors in the room.
0:27:07 > 0:27:11Beswick figure of a bulldog and the Beswick figure of a black-faced sheep.
0:27:11 > 0:27:13Their estimate is ?50-?80 for those two.
0:27:13 > 0:27:17Let's hope somebody here thinks they're worth it too.
0:27:17 > 0:27:20How much for the two? Nice, collectible lot, this.
0:27:20 > 0:27:22Gimme, what? ?50, ?80.
0:27:22 > 0:27:25I'll take ?30 for the two of them, then.
0:27:25 > 0:27:2920, then? 25, I'm bid. 30? And 5?
0:27:29 > 0:27:31In the door?
0:27:31 > 0:27:34At ?30, the bid, With you at ?30.
0:27:34 > 0:27:36I'll take five anywhere else now? 40, and five. At ?45.
0:27:36 > 0:27:38It's still cheap, that. At ?45.
0:27:38 > 0:27:41Take 50, anywhere else now?
0:27:41 > 0:27:46Slowly going, standing at ?45, then.
0:27:46 > 0:27:48?5 under estimate. Not bad.
0:27:48 > 0:27:51Does that bode well or bad for the rest of it?
0:27:51 > 0:27:54It's watch this space, because you just cannot tell.
0:27:54 > 0:27:56It really depends who is going to be there.
0:27:56 > 0:27:59If you notice there were two people bidding.
0:27:59 > 0:28:01That's all you need to get the price up.
0:28:01 > 0:28:04?45 is only just under estimate and gives us a solid start
0:28:04 > 0:28:07but, if we're going to make our ?500 target today,
0:28:07 > 0:28:10we'll need the bidders to get a bit more excited
0:28:10 > 0:28:13about the rest of our lots.
0:28:13 > 0:28:16Next up is the reproduction jewellery box.
0:28:16 > 0:28:19The estimate is ?10 to ?20.
0:28:19 > 0:28:21Let's hope it's at the top end of that.
0:28:21 > 0:28:22A nice decorative thing, that.
0:28:22 > 0:28:24Give me ?20 for it.
0:28:25 > 0:28:29I'll take ?10 to start it. Must be that. Nobody want it at ?10?
0:28:31 > 0:28:34Five, then! Start me! ?5, 8, I'm bid. 10, 12...
0:28:34 > 0:28:3715 - she's worth it!
0:28:37 > 0:28:39?12 I'm bid. Behind you, there.
0:28:39 > 0:28:40I'll take 15 anywhere else?
0:28:40 > 0:28:41Come on, 15.
0:28:41 > 0:28:45Sold and away at 12, then.
0:28:45 > 0:28:50Ooh! ?12. Well, you've got your money back, yes. I have.
0:28:50 > 0:28:52Good. Every little helps.
0:28:52 > 0:28:57?12 is OVER Jonty's low estimate and the girls seem pleased.
0:28:57 > 0:29:03But the Victorian stepladder only takes us a small step closer towards the target
0:29:03 > 0:29:07when it goes under the hammer next, selling for a really disappointing ?10.
0:29:07 > 0:29:11Only going to the maiden bid of ten, then.
0:29:11 > 0:29:15We really do need things to pick up if we're going to make the ?500
0:29:15 > 0:29:18for Karina and Catherine to have that girly spa trip.
0:29:18 > 0:29:20Maybe the Russian lady will do us proud,
0:29:20 > 0:29:25although even Karina is struggling to see her merits.
0:29:25 > 0:29:29What inspired you to buy that? I have no idea!
0:29:29 > 0:29:31You're quite happy to see this go?
0:29:31 > 0:29:33I will be very glad to see this go!
0:29:33 > 0:29:35What, ?30-?40 for that?
0:29:35 > 0:29:38I'll take ?20 to start her, then.
0:29:38 > 0:29:42Must be that. Nobody want it at ?20? Got to be 20, surely!
0:29:42 > 0:29:44A cheap-looking lot there at ?20.
0:29:44 > 0:29:48I'm only bid at ?20. I'll take two anywhere else now.
0:29:48 > 0:29:51Sold, it's going to the maiden bid of 20, then.
0:29:51 > 0:29:53That's not sold again, I'm afraid.
0:29:53 > 0:29:55That's coming home with you again.
0:29:55 > 0:29:57Oh, no! Still fit in your car, though!
0:29:57 > 0:30:00You could have had it for 20!
0:30:00 > 0:30:02Unsold.
0:30:02 > 0:30:04Our slow start isn't getting any better,
0:30:04 > 0:30:06although Karina's still smiling.
0:30:06 > 0:30:09I'm very disappointed about that.
0:30:09 > 0:30:11I'd quite like somebody to have taken her.
0:30:12 > 0:30:17The bidders are proving to be a tricky crowd and ceramics don't seem to be doing well so far.
0:30:17 > 0:30:21Will the furniture buyers be any better?
0:30:21 > 0:30:25Jonty, next up, this small oak table. What did you make of that?
0:30:25 > 0:30:30Nice, small, compact but, because it's 1920s, there are still a lot of them around.
0:30:30 > 0:30:33You can't get a vast amount of money for them.
0:30:33 > 0:30:37But ?30 would be great if possible. Here it comes.
0:30:37 > 0:30:40Nice little table, that. Lot 88a.
0:30:40 > 0:30:43Take 20 to go for this? ?20 I've got. Thank you.
0:30:43 > 0:30:45Right by me. 22? 25? 28?
0:30:45 > 0:30:4730? 32? 35?
0:30:47 > 0:30:49?32, the bid's with you at the back.
0:30:49 > 0:30:5235? 38? 40? And 2?
0:30:52 > 0:30:56If you like it, sir? At ?40, standing against you now, at ?40.
0:30:56 > 0:30:58I'll take 5 anywhere else?
0:30:58 > 0:31:00Sold and away with you, sir.
0:31:00 > 0:31:04?40! Great! ?10 over your own estimate.
0:31:04 > 0:31:09Steady on! Making up for lost ground, I think, probably!
0:31:09 > 0:31:13Phew! At last something has sold for over its estimate.
0:31:13 > 0:31:17?40 is a great price tag for the table, and not before time.
0:31:17 > 0:31:19Let's see how we've done so far.
0:31:19 > 0:31:22Well, guys, we're halfway through now.
0:31:22 > 0:31:26Heading towards, we hope, 500 quid for that luxury spa weekend.
0:31:26 > 0:31:30How do you think we've done. A bit slow. Slow?
0:31:30 > 0:31:34I should say so. The grand total at the moment is ?107.
0:31:34 > 0:31:37So, Jonty, we've a lot of ground to make up.
0:31:37 > 0:31:40We've got a lot to make up. But I do think the best is yet to come.
0:31:40 > 0:31:43We've got the rest of the Beswick horse collection.
0:31:43 > 0:31:46Another Bunch, of course, and that dentist's cabinet. Yeah.
0:31:46 > 0:31:50Fancy a coffee? Come on, let's take a break.
0:31:56 > 0:32:01While the girls grab a well-earned cuppa, Jonty proves that he's never one to put his feet up
0:32:01 > 0:32:04as he hunts out an interesting little lot in the saleroom.
0:32:04 > 0:32:08Jonty, I love letting you loose because I'm never quite sure what you'll come up with.
0:32:08 > 0:32:13What are you looking at here? This is a drop-dial clock. It's late 19th century.
0:32:13 > 0:32:18In the catalogue the auctioneers have valued it at between ?30 and ?50, which is fine,
0:32:18 > 0:32:22but it should sell for more and there's a reason for that.
0:32:22 > 0:32:26You've got the maker and the maker's name here.
0:32:26 > 0:32:29But it has been made in Llangollen, which is not very far
0:32:29 > 0:32:34away from here at all, which means there will be local interest.
0:32:34 > 0:32:37The dealers will be fighting for this. The casing here is rosewood.
0:32:37 > 0:32:41And you have lots of nice detail here. So it will restore very well.
0:32:41 > 0:32:47The actual enamel fascia has seen better days, but this clock still has potential.
0:32:47 > 0:32:50Let's get back to the auction and see what happens.
0:32:54 > 0:32:58The second half of the auction is well under way when we get back.
0:32:58 > 0:33:02It's time for the clock section of the sale.
0:33:03 > 0:33:05Next up is that late-Victorian wall clock that,
0:33:05 > 0:33:07Jonty, you took some interest in.
0:33:07 > 0:33:09Yes, one of many in your house!
0:33:11 > 0:33:16It's seen better days, but it is restorable, so I reckon it is a dealer's lot, this one.
0:33:16 > 0:33:20Let's see how we go. Should be, what, ?30-?40 for that, somebody?
0:33:20 > 0:33:22I'll take ?20 to start, then. Must be 20?!
0:33:22 > 0:33:25Nobody want it? ?20.
0:33:26 > 0:33:28Good man. ?20.
0:33:28 > 0:33:33?20 is under estimate. It just doesn't seem to be our lucky day.
0:33:33 > 0:33:38But will the locally-made wall clock that Jonty spotted earlier fare any better?
0:33:38 > 0:33:41Lot 159. The rosewood case, drop-dial wall clock.
0:33:41 > 0:33:42WA Thomas of Llangollen.
0:33:42 > 0:33:45Quality clock, that.
0:33:45 > 0:33:47Sold and gone at ?80, then?
0:33:48 > 0:33:52Well, the bidders reached deep into their wallets on that sale.
0:33:52 > 0:33:57It's just a shame they're not as generous when it comes to ours.
0:33:57 > 0:33:59Maybe our next lot will have some more success.
0:33:59 > 0:34:03Next up, one of your dozen or so wardrobes,
0:34:03 > 0:34:07that's come from your house. Jonty, what do you make of it?
0:34:07 > 0:34:10I valued it at ?40-?60. Who says antiques are expensive?
0:34:10 > 0:34:13Real value for money. But there is a flaw to this, isn't there?
0:34:13 > 0:34:17It's a bit too narrow for clothes hangers. Don't tell anyone in the auction room!
0:34:19 > 0:34:20It looks big enough!
0:34:20 > 0:34:23Let's see how it goes. Here we go.
0:34:23 > 0:34:29Good wardrobe. I'll take, what, ?40 to ?50 to go for it, somebody?
0:34:29 > 0:34:30Start me, then, ?20?
0:34:32 > 0:34:35?10. Straight in at 10. Who'll say ?12? ?10.
0:34:35 > 0:34:38I'm only bid at ?10. Take 12 anywhere else now?
0:34:40 > 0:34:43It's going at the maiden bid of ?10, then.
0:34:43 > 0:34:44Selling it for a tenner.
0:34:44 > 0:34:48Good. I won't have to take it home!
0:34:49 > 0:34:53?10 is well under estimate and we're short of our target.
0:34:53 > 0:34:57The girls are putting on a brave face but their day of pampering
0:34:57 > 0:34:59in the spa is looking further and further away.
0:35:01 > 0:35:03But will the bidders finally sing our tune
0:35:03 > 0:35:05as the lovely piano stool comes up for sale?
0:35:05 > 0:35:08We're hoping to raise at least ?30.
0:35:10 > 0:35:14Under way at 20. I am slightly disappointed that wasn't higher.
0:35:14 > 0:35:19It's a sweet Victorian pedestal. Cute. Useful in any home. It is.
0:35:19 > 0:35:20If you have a piano. Or not.
0:35:20 > 0:35:24?20 is just under estimate
0:35:24 > 0:35:27and our luck just doesn't seem to be improving.
0:35:27 > 0:35:30Our target is a long way off and we need the next lot to get
0:35:30 > 0:35:34us back on track if we're going to make anything like our target today.
0:35:34 > 0:35:37With an estimate of between ?50 and ?80,
0:35:37 > 0:35:41will the 1930s dental cabinet manage to extract some cash
0:35:41 > 0:35:43from the bidders' wallets?
0:35:43 > 0:35:47So, it's considerably emptier and lighter than when I last saw it.
0:35:47 > 0:35:52You could tell, could you? You can see inside it now, which is a bonus.
0:35:52 > 0:35:56?50 to ?80, but we're struggling a bit today, to be honest.
0:35:56 > 0:35:59Just a bit. Can we get to 50 quid?
0:35:59 > 0:36:02Yes, well, who knows? Here goes.
0:36:02 > 0:36:05Nice, interesting piece. Lot 207A, ?50 for that somebody?
0:36:05 > 0:36:09I'll take ?20 to start. It must be that.
0:36:09 > 0:36:13Nobody at ?20? No bid for it.
0:36:13 > 0:36:17?20 I've got. Thank you, madam, straight in at 25 I'm bid. 30.
0:36:17 > 0:36:19If you like it, add 5.
0:36:19 > 0:36:24At ?30. With you at ?30. 40, and 5.
0:36:24 > 0:36:28At 40, that's still cheap. Take 5 anywhere else?
0:36:28 > 0:36:31There's no doubt about it, we're really struggling today.
0:36:31 > 0:36:33The bidders seem incredibly cautious.
0:36:33 > 0:36:36I really do feel for Karina and Catherine.
0:36:36 > 0:36:41They did such good work decluttering and they deserve to get at least a few pampering treatments,
0:36:41 > 0:36:43even if they can't afford a whole spa weekend.
0:36:43 > 0:36:46Let's hope there are some art lovers in the room
0:36:46 > 0:36:49as our colourful painting is up next which we're hoping could be worth...
0:36:53 > 0:36:57It's a genuine oil painting but it's not to everyone's taste.
0:36:57 > 0:37:02What inspired you to buy this one? It was cheap. Nobody else wanted it!
0:37:02 > 0:37:05?20 I've got. Thank you, sir. Straight in at 20.
0:37:05 > 0:37:08Who'll say 2 now? 22, 25, 28.
0:37:08 > 0:37:10If you like it? At 28, 30, and 2.
0:37:10 > 0:37:13You're the one laughing now! Take 2 anywhere else now?
0:37:13 > 0:37:16Away at 30 then. Wow.
0:37:18 > 0:37:21Well! I eat my hat, Jonty. That's fantastic. Did you see the buyer?
0:37:21 > 0:37:26He's got very thick glasses. That explains a lot!
0:37:26 > 0:37:29At last, ?30 is ?10 over estimate
0:37:29 > 0:37:32and we're all pretty relieved, if somewhat surprised.
0:37:33 > 0:37:37It's time for our star lots now to come under the hammer.
0:37:37 > 0:37:42We're just over halfway to making our target and with such a massive amount still outstanding,
0:37:42 > 0:37:46will the Beswick horses race us towards the finish line or fall at the first hurdle?
0:37:48 > 0:37:50This is it, this is crunch time.
0:37:50 > 0:37:53It's the main event. The Beswick collection.
0:37:53 > 0:37:59The auctioneer's split these into around about nine lots. With an average of 30 to ?40.
0:37:59 > 0:38:02They're either in pairs or individuals.
0:38:02 > 0:38:07So, if we don't do well on this, it'll make the difference between a spa day and a spa weekend.
0:38:07 > 0:38:09Let's see how we get on.
0:38:09 > 0:38:13Beswick figure of a Shire horse. ?10 I've got, thank you, sir.
0:38:13 > 0:38:16In at 10, 12, 15, 18, 20 I'm bid.
0:38:16 > 0:38:20And 2? Over at the door at 20.
0:38:20 > 0:38:23And they're off! It's a strong start as the Shire horse which Karina had
0:38:23 > 0:38:27glued back together sells for a fantastic 20 quid.
0:38:29 > 0:38:33And the next few lots bring home a few pounds as well.
0:38:33 > 0:38:34?35 then. Sold.
0:38:34 > 0:38:36At ?28 then.
0:38:36 > 0:38:42But it's far from a smooth ride as the room suddenly goes quiet and the next few lots go unsold.
0:38:42 > 0:38:45Not sold either I'm afraid. Come to us after.
0:38:47 > 0:38:51Will Another Bunch perhaps prove to be our lucky charm?
0:38:51 > 0:38:53This is your fave. Another Bunch.
0:38:53 > 0:38:55?38 then?
0:38:55 > 0:38:59It's gone. 38.
0:38:59 > 0:39:02It might have sold but ?38 is under estimate again
0:39:02 > 0:39:04and the girls look really worried.
0:39:04 > 0:39:07There's one final horse to go under the hammer
0:39:07 > 0:39:11and there's no question that there's a lot riding on this one.
0:39:11 > 0:39:14Beswick figure of a grey hunter. At ?20, the maiden bid.
0:39:14 > 0:39:1622, 25, 28.
0:39:16 > 0:39:2030, 32, 35, 38 in the door.
0:39:20 > 0:39:2440 and 2, 45, 48, 50...
0:39:24 > 0:39:29That's better. 52, 55? At ?52, the bid is in the door.
0:39:29 > 0:39:31Sold then at ?52 then.
0:39:33 > 0:39:37Brilliant! ?52 is a result at last.
0:39:37 > 0:39:44Just on those nine lots, on the horses, a grand total of ?201. That's a few facials.
0:39:46 > 0:39:50And I got ?20 for the decapitated, legless Shire horse.
0:39:51 > 0:39:54So that's not bad. That's the attitude, Karina!
0:39:54 > 0:39:58It's been a turbulent day at the auction in Wrexham and the bidders
0:39:58 > 0:40:03have driven a hard bargain but how have we done overall?
0:40:03 > 0:40:06Well, guys, it's the end of the auction.
0:40:06 > 0:40:10A bit disappointing, I think, Jonty, in some respects. Particularly all that Beswick.
0:40:10 > 0:40:13I was very disappointed about that. I think we had dealers here,
0:40:13 > 0:40:17not collectors and that's the reason why we only got the figure we did.
0:40:17 > 0:40:24500 quid would get you a spa weekend away which clearly you both do very much deserve. Clearly.
0:40:24 > 0:40:28Well, I'm happy to say we haven't blown the figure
0:40:28 > 0:40:31but we have got ?428. That's great. Wow!
0:40:31 > 0:40:36Which isn't bad, given the day we've had. Is that going to be enough?
0:40:36 > 0:40:41That's going to cover a couple of facials, manicures and a couple of treats.
0:40:41 > 0:40:46You've been working that out, haven't you? Yeah. I've got the price list at home.
0:40:46 > 0:40:49Have you, Catherine, managed to stop Karina buying any stuff today?
0:40:49 > 0:40:52Just about. I've had my hands glued together.
0:40:52 > 0:40:58Good. Just as well, it means you're going to go away with ?428 in cash for what you intended it for.
0:40:58 > 0:41:00And an empty boot. An empty boot.
0:41:05 > 0:41:11It's been a few weeks since Karina and Catherine raised ?428 at auction and the time has come for them to
0:41:11 > 0:41:15take a well-earned trip to their local health spa.
0:41:15 > 0:41:18It's really nice to be able to spend some time with my sister.
0:41:18 > 0:41:22She has such a manic life and she has been absolutely brilliant.
0:41:22 > 0:41:28Whenever I've been feeling a bit miserable, I can always phone her up or visit her.
0:41:28 > 0:41:31It's nice to be able to do something for her.
0:41:31 > 0:41:35If you both want come with me, and I'll take you upstairs ready for the therapy. Lovely.
0:41:36 > 0:41:41Having chosen from the extensive list of treatments on offer, the girls get straight down
0:41:41 > 0:41:44to the business of relaxation, via the gift shop, of course.
0:41:50 > 0:41:52The treatments were great.
0:41:52 > 0:41:54The back massage was so relaxing.
0:41:54 > 0:41:57It was really nice. You'd never had it before, had you? No.
0:41:59 > 0:42:06But all that pampering is obviously thirsty work, so they head outside to the terrace to finish the day off
0:42:06 > 0:42:10with a slap-up meal. I think I might have converted her a little bit to the facial.
0:42:10 > 0:42:16The finer things in life. Yeah, you didn't need much converting though.
0:42:16 > 0:42:18Here is to a lovely day. Thank you very much.
