0:00:02 > 0:00:03Welcome to Cash In The Attic,
0:00:03 > 0:00:07the show that finds hidden treasures around your home and then helps you sell them at auction.
0:00:07 > 0:00:13Today I'm at Willsborough in Kent and this is a fantastic working windmill.
0:00:13 > 0:00:18It's what's known as a white smock mill. It dates back to 1869.
0:00:18 > 0:00:22The mill once produced enough power to turn four sets of millstones.
0:00:22 > 0:00:26But, in the late 1930s, as electric power became cheaper,
0:00:26 > 0:00:27it could no longer compete.
0:00:27 > 0:00:32So, in the 1950s, it was closed and became a home.
0:00:32 > 0:00:37The outside deteriorated, but the mill was eventually bought by Ashford Council and restored.
0:00:37 > 0:00:42So, this old girl's a bit of an antique - the windmill, not me!
0:00:42 > 0:00:47Let's see if we can find some more antiques as we go in search of treasures to go under the hammer.
0:01:08 > 0:01:11Coming up on today's Cash In The Attic - there's music in the air.
0:01:11 > 0:01:13Well, sort of!
0:01:15 > 0:01:18I can get absolutely nothing!
0:01:18 > 0:01:20And John dons his dancing shoes.
0:01:23 > 0:01:25- Shall we?- Come on then.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27When we get to auction, will it be cheers all round?
0:01:27 > 0:01:30Find out when the final hammer falls.
0:01:32 > 0:01:35I'm about to meet a family who are putting their faith
0:01:35 > 0:01:37in the Cash In The Attic team
0:01:37 > 0:01:39to help them raise money for a special
0:01:39 > 0:01:41and very active family day out.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44This cosy semi in Ashford is home to Rosemary Wilding
0:01:44 > 0:01:48who is an active fund-raiser for charity and a church group leader.
0:01:48 > 0:01:51Rosemary brought up her four children in this family home,
0:01:51 > 0:01:54and although the kids have long since flown the nest,
0:01:54 > 0:01:57the bedrooms are still overflowing with their old possessions.
0:01:57 > 0:01:59So she's decided it's time for a clearout
0:01:59 > 0:02:03and has roped in daughter Selina and son David to help out.
0:02:03 > 0:02:06If they can be torn away from the board game that is!
0:02:06 > 0:02:08- Did I keep you waiting? Sorry.- Where have you been?
0:02:08 > 0:02:11I've been at a most beautiful windmill and it's in working order.
0:02:11 > 0:02:14Absolutely fabulous. I couldn't tear myself away.
0:02:14 > 0:02:16- You get the best jobs! - What have you been up to?
0:02:16 > 0:02:20I know that our family have a great collection of toys today that we can send to auction.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23- Toys? Boys' toys. You'll like that. - I'm in my element.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26I couldn't help notice as I came in, it says, "There is hope!"
0:02:26 > 0:02:30Well, if they're in mint condition and they're all boxed, there's every hope.
0:02:30 > 0:02:33- Let's go find out.- Hello?
0:02:35 > 0:02:36Well, good morning!
0:02:36 > 0:02:39I heard you guys were keen on toys and games
0:02:39 > 0:02:42but this is ridiculous at this time of the morning!
0:02:42 > 0:02:45- Now, you're Rosemary. - I am indeed, yes.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48- And you are?- Dave.- And...?
0:02:48 > 0:02:52- I'm Selina.- Now you're all fans of the programme, obviously,
0:02:52 > 0:02:55but who made the call? Who put the e-mail in?
0:02:55 > 0:03:01- I did.- Did you?- Yes. I knew mum's got lots of knick-knacks everywhere.
0:03:01 > 0:03:06We're going to declutter your house and obviously you've got some kind of project in mind.
0:03:06 > 0:03:08Have you been talking about it as a family?
0:03:08 > 0:03:12Water skiing with all the children. That should be great fun.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15So, it's wetsuit for you, is it?
0:03:15 > 0:03:18- No!- No?- I've tried it before and I couldn't even stand up.
0:03:18 > 0:03:22So, some of your children, lots of grandchildren, big family outing.
0:03:22 > 0:03:26- How much money?- Probably about 300 quid will probably be about right.
0:03:26 > 0:03:31OK, well, we've got a big day ahead of us rummaging.
0:03:31 > 0:03:36Before we get started, I will tell you who did it and where!
0:03:36 > 0:03:39The Wildings are obviously very close
0:03:39 > 0:03:41and what a great idea to spend a day on the water.
0:03:41 > 0:03:46One man who's never afraid to dive right in is our expert, John Cameron.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49He's a big kid at heart, you know!
0:03:49 > 0:03:52- Ah, hello girls. - You've been looking at their toys.
0:03:52 > 0:03:54I told you, he loves toys.
0:03:54 > 0:03:56I am absolutely in my element here.
0:03:56 > 0:03:59- I bet you are.- I feel like I've come to a virtual time warp.
0:03:59 > 0:04:02I'm back in time to when I was about ten years old.
0:04:02 > 0:04:04- Great.- Absolutely fabulous. - What have you got there?
0:04:04 > 0:04:06We've got a boxed set, a Corgi set,
0:04:06 > 0:04:10the emergency set that would have come out in about the early 1980s.
0:04:10 > 0:04:15Now, Corgi first launched their range in about 1956.
0:04:15 > 0:04:20Based in Swansea, they were in direct competition to Meccano's Dinky Toys.
0:04:20 > 0:04:23We've got the little signs there, the stretcher, with the casualty on there.
0:04:23 > 0:04:26It's mint condition, boxed, ready to go to auction.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29So how much do you think this might be worth?
0:04:29 > 0:04:33- I would be tempted to put an estimate of about £40 to £60 on this.- Really?
0:04:33 > 0:04:37Good start. Much more to do, though. Let's find some more things.
0:04:37 > 0:04:38Time to put the toys away, John!
0:04:38 > 0:04:42Our £300 target certainly isn't child's play,
0:04:42 > 0:04:45and with £40 in the pot, we've a long way to go yet.
0:04:45 > 0:04:51Upstairs, David, our one-time toy collector, spots this boxed clarinet
0:04:51 > 0:04:55which is music to John's ears valued at £30 to £50.
0:04:55 > 0:04:58And there's definitely a theme developing here,
0:04:58 > 0:05:01as I make a top brass find in the bedroom.
0:05:01 > 0:05:04Aha! I found something rather nice here, I think.
0:05:04 > 0:05:06Not that I know much about...
0:05:06 > 0:05:09- is it a trombone?- It's a trumpet.
0:05:09 > 0:05:10That's how much I know!
0:05:10 > 0:05:12Did I just do that right?
0:05:12 > 0:05:15No, I don't think I did! I thought I was quite musical.
0:05:15 > 0:05:17Are you musical?
0:05:17 > 0:05:19- No.- Is it yours?- Yes, it is mine.
0:05:19 > 0:05:21Do you play? Neither do I.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24Never tried before, but no time like the present.
0:05:24 > 0:05:26I'm going to get lipstick everywhere.
0:05:26 > 0:05:28SILENCE
0:05:28 > 0:05:30Oh, my God! I can't!
0:05:30 > 0:05:33John! John! I've got a trumpet!
0:05:33 > 0:05:36- Sounds like somebody's having a lot of fun.- You can blow that.
0:05:36 > 0:05:38There you go. What do you think of that?
0:05:38 > 0:05:41- Do you want me to give it a go?- I want you to give us a tune.
0:05:41 > 0:05:42Let's see what I can do.
0:05:42 > 0:05:46SQUEAK
0:05:46 > 0:05:48- There you are.- Oh, well done.
0:05:48 > 0:05:50- An old wind bag, what do you know. - How did you do that?
0:05:50 > 0:05:54Well, it's these lungs I've got. It's an interesting item.
0:05:54 > 0:05:57The first thing that strikes me is the condition. A bit battered.
0:05:57 > 0:05:59It's been well used, shall we say.
0:05:59 > 0:06:03- You can see that these valve keys are sticking here. They need to spring up.- It says...
0:06:03 > 0:06:08Majestic. Majestic up on the bell. There's the maker there.
0:06:08 > 0:06:12I noticed here we've got a Rudi Muck mouthpiece, the rim mouthpiece.
0:06:12 > 0:06:14Very famous. They don't turn up terribly often.
0:06:14 > 0:06:18think we ought to be looking at about £40 to £60 as a starting point, don't you?
0:06:18 > 0:06:20Better than just sitting in the loft.
0:06:20 > 0:06:24- All right, let's box it up and take it to that auction.- Excellent.
0:06:24 > 0:06:27£40 is another great addition to the kitty.
0:06:27 > 0:06:29We're searching every nook and cranny.
0:06:29 > 0:06:34Rosemary is tackling the garage where she finds this Matchbox racing car set
0:06:34 > 0:06:38which will zoom off to auction with a price tag of £30 to £40.
0:06:38 > 0:06:42Upstairs, John's on to another winner with these Smurf figurines.
0:06:42 > 0:06:46Smurfs first appeared in a Belgian comic strip in 1958
0:06:46 > 0:06:50and they could bring us anything between £50 and £100.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53We're making good headway towards that £300 target
0:06:53 > 0:06:57for the family day out water skiing.
0:06:57 > 0:07:00So, while the others carrying on rummaging,
0:07:00 > 0:07:03I take a stroll with our green-fingered lady.
0:07:03 > 0:07:08- She's been living here for 35 years, but she's not the only one. Who is this?- This is Suzy.
0:07:08 > 0:07:10- Can I pick her up?- Yes.
0:07:10 > 0:07:12Hello, Suzy. Hello, Suzy.
0:07:12 > 0:07:15Oh, my goodness. Aren't you lovely?
0:07:15 > 0:07:19It's funny how you want to stroke tortoises.
0:07:19 > 0:07:24It's ridiculous because they can't feel, I don't think!
0:07:24 > 0:07:28Isn't she lovely. I had one when I was a little girl.
0:07:28 > 0:07:30You've lived here all those years
0:07:30 > 0:07:34and for quite a lot of it, actually, you were on your own because had you a divorce.
0:07:34 > 0:07:36Yes, unfortunately,
0:07:36 > 0:07:41but God took care of us and we got this lovely house.
0:07:41 > 0:07:44I just wanted to get away from town.
0:07:44 > 0:07:48I wanted to be in the country because as a young child I used to go to my gran's,
0:07:48 > 0:07:51and she lived in the country, so it was my haven.
0:07:51 > 0:07:52You mentioned God there
0:07:52 > 0:07:56and I know that your faith is very important to you.
0:07:56 > 0:07:59Tell me how strong is it and how has it helped you?
0:07:59 > 0:08:02The Lord revealed himself to me.
0:08:02 > 0:08:05I saw him standing with his arms wide open.
0:08:05 > 0:08:10You know, very big, and I just ran into his arms and from then,
0:08:10 > 0:08:16I was completely healed because when our marriage broke up, I had a breakdown.
0:08:16 > 0:08:20But, God healed me and from that moment I never took any more medication.
0:08:20 > 0:08:24Have your children and your grandchildren got the same sort of faith?
0:08:24 > 0:08:25Yes, they do. Yes.
0:08:25 > 0:08:31- Because you obviously have a big, happy family and all coming and going.- Oh, yes, we're very close.
0:08:31 > 0:08:35I'm not quite sure I'd make my family go water skiing.
0:08:35 > 0:08:37Are you sure about this?
0:08:37 > 0:08:39I think they're going to enjoy it!
0:08:39 > 0:08:43- I think you should stay in the speedboat myself. I- will.
0:08:43 > 0:08:45I think I'll stay in the speedboat.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48Well, I do hope you all have a wonderful day out,
0:08:48 > 0:08:50but it's not going to happen unless we make that money.
0:08:50 > 0:08:54Come on, lead me back in, and we'll get on with some more rummaging.
0:08:54 > 0:08:56While we've been having a chin wag,
0:08:56 > 0:09:00Rosemary's son David has dug out a collection I know John will love.
0:09:00 > 0:09:03- John?- David, wow.- Found this.
0:09:03 > 0:09:07It is a virtual Aladdin's Cave of Action Man stuff.
0:09:07 > 0:09:09What are your memories of this?
0:09:09 > 0:09:14I sort of vaguely remember playing with it, setting all the towers up
0:09:14 > 0:09:18and having my little war in my bedroom, of course.
0:09:18 > 0:09:21If we have a look at this one here who is in his original box,
0:09:21 > 0:09:24we can just see how well you've looked after things.
0:09:24 > 0:09:27On the top of the box we can see there
0:09:27 > 0:09:29the National Toy Association's Award,
0:09:29 > 0:09:33the golden award, proved just how popular Action Man was.
0:09:33 > 0:09:35We've got the field commander and field radio set here.
0:09:35 > 0:09:37That doesn't surprise me knowing you, David,
0:09:37 > 0:09:41that here we have the instructions, everything's there, all the stickers are still on.
0:09:41 > 0:09:44I'm absolutely amazed and there he is.
0:09:44 > 0:09:48Look, he was the last version they launched that has the gripping hands
0:09:48 > 0:09:53and if we have a look there, the eagle eyes and they still work.
0:09:53 > 0:09:56Fantastic. Any idea what these might be worth?
0:09:56 > 0:09:58Haven't got a clue. No idea at all.
0:09:58 > 0:10:02I would see this lot quite easily making £150 to £200.
0:10:02 > 0:10:05Would that be tempting enough?
0:10:05 > 0:10:07- Oh, yes.- Sure?- Oh, yes.
0:10:07 > 0:10:11- You're not going to have second thoughts and suddenly you want to start getting it out again?- No, no.
0:10:11 > 0:10:14David's toys are proving a gold mine today,
0:10:14 > 0:10:17with the Action Men adding £150 to our kitty.
0:10:17 > 0:10:22And I'm hoping I could be on to a good thing with this Praktica camera.
0:10:22 > 0:10:27It's about 20 years old but still has its original box
0:10:27 > 0:10:30and John values it at £20 to £30.
0:10:30 > 0:10:33Our expert seems to have snuck outside into the sunshine,
0:10:33 > 0:10:36but Selina hotfoots it after him with another find.
0:10:36 > 0:10:41- Hi, Selina.- Hi, I brought this along today to see what it might be worth.
0:10:41 > 0:10:44Oh, right, is this one of your things?
0:10:44 > 0:10:47Yes, it was one of my dad's, what he left behind when he passed away.
0:10:47 > 0:10:50- He's like a novelty. - He's quite nice, yes.
0:10:50 > 0:10:56In the 18th and 19th century, and even earlier, they became part of a man's wardrobe,
0:10:56 > 0:10:58almost a fashion statement.
0:10:58 > 0:11:01But they were also very useful.
0:11:01 > 0:11:04Not least for getting down out of carriages.
0:11:04 > 0:11:06But what's great is that novelty top on it.
0:11:06 > 0:11:08So, I'm going to put my neck on the line.
0:11:08 > 0:11:12- I'm going to put what I think is a punchy estimate on him.- Right.
0:11:12 > 0:11:15- I reckon we could put an estimate of about £80 to £120.- Oh, wow.
0:11:15 > 0:11:19- That's amazing. After sitting in the corner doing nothing.- That's great.
0:11:19 > 0:11:22You seem really determined to get Mum up on those water skis, don't you?
0:11:22 > 0:11:24So, shall we go and find Mum?
0:11:24 > 0:11:27- Certainly will. - It'll just leave me to... Shall we.
0:11:27 > 0:11:30- Come on, then.- A true gent at heart.
0:11:30 > 0:11:35Well, Selina certainly seems impressed and with another £80 in our coffers, so am I.
0:11:35 > 0:11:42Rosemary unearths one last toy to add to our haul today, a boxed electric train.
0:11:42 > 0:11:46John reckons it could bring us £40 to £80 at the auction.
0:11:46 > 0:11:49We're nearly at the end of our day's rummaging,
0:11:49 > 0:11:52but the dining room has one last surprise for us.
0:11:55 > 0:11:58Well, I can't find anything down there, guys. What have you got?
0:11:58 > 0:12:01I've got a rather interesting piece of art pottery here
0:12:01 > 0:12:05and I think, Rosemary, you've got the other one there. Let's have a look.
0:12:05 > 0:12:07So, Rosemary, where did they come from?
0:12:07 > 0:12:12They came from an employer that I used to work for who was a retired antique dealer.
0:12:12 > 0:12:16They're loosely styled Palissyware, which was a name given to them after Bernard Palissy,
0:12:16 > 0:12:20a 15th century French potter, who was noted for his models of naturalistic birds,
0:12:20 > 0:12:25insects, butterflies, lizards, and that sort of thing. They turn up at auction quite popular.
0:12:25 > 0:12:28So these are mostly definitely 19th century and on the bottom
0:12:28 > 0:12:32we can see an impressed mark which is a bit obscured by the glaze,
0:12:32 > 0:12:35but I know that's Caldas Terrano, it's a Portuguese factory
0:12:35 > 0:12:41and that factory started about 1858 which ties in perfectly with the emergence of majolica in Europe.
0:12:41 > 0:12:45- Wow.- This one has damage around this little crenulated rim here
0:12:45 > 0:12:48which is beautifully naturalistically modelled with these leaves up here.
0:12:48 > 0:12:52I think taking condition and market conditions into consideration,
0:12:52 > 0:12:55I think we ought to be looking at about 80 to 120 for the pair,
0:12:55 > 0:12:58though I wouldn't be surprised if they did make more than that.
0:12:58 > 0:13:02I never realised they would be as much as that. So, I'll think about it!
0:13:02 > 0:13:06Well, take a bit of time. You've got a couple of weeks until the auction
0:13:06 > 0:13:09and she can tell us on auction day whether or not you're going to bring them along.
0:13:09 > 0:13:13Meantime, I'm going to ask the rest of our helpers, come on, Selina.
0:13:13 > 0:13:16David! We've been having a look at these lovely pieces.
0:13:16 > 0:13:21- Do you remember using them at all? - No. I just remember seeing them in the cupboard.- In the cupboard.
0:13:21 > 0:13:23- Do you like them?- They're all right!
0:13:23 > 0:13:26Your mum's will think about whether they should come to the auction
0:13:26 > 0:13:28as she's quite attached to them.
0:13:28 > 0:13:32That actually brings to us the end of our day's rummaging. Have you enjoyed yourself?
0:13:32 > 0:13:34Yes, I have, thoroughly.
0:13:34 > 0:13:39Good. Well, I'm going to tell you that we hope, based on John's estimates,
0:13:39 > 0:13:43that you're looking for your £300 for this wild day of water skiing, yes?
0:13:43 > 0:13:49So, without these, we hope that you'll make not just the 300
0:13:49 > 0:13:53- but in fact £480!- That's good.
0:13:53 > 0:13:55What do you think about that?
0:13:55 > 0:14:01- It's excellent.- That means you're in your wetsuit and you're up there!
0:14:01 > 0:14:05We've had a really fun day with Rosemary, Selina, and David
0:14:05 > 0:14:09and our ruthless rummaging has resulted in a fantastic haul of items for auction.
0:14:09 > 0:14:12We've got the unusual walking stick
0:14:12 > 0:14:16which John valued at a very handy £80 to £120.
0:14:16 > 0:14:19And the pristine collection of Action Man figures
0:14:19 > 0:14:22with a whopping estimate of £150 to £200.
0:14:22 > 0:14:24But we'll have to wait until auction
0:14:24 > 0:14:30to see whether Rosemary can part with her majolica candlesticks
0:14:30 > 0:14:33which John hopes could make us £80 to £120.
0:14:33 > 0:14:37Still to come on Cash In The Attic - there's good news...
0:14:37 > 0:14:39Somebody's answering your prayers!
0:14:39 > 0:14:42...and bad news.
0:14:42 > 0:14:46That wasn't terribly good at all, was it? Half my bottom estimate. £20.
0:14:46 > 0:14:49But will we reach our target when the final hammer falls?
0:14:53 > 0:14:56Well, it's two weeks now since we were with Rosemary
0:14:56 > 0:15:00and, today, we brought all those well-preserved toys and her other antiques
0:15:00 > 0:15:04and collectibles here to Chiswick Auction Rooms in West London.
0:15:04 > 0:15:07Now she's not asking for much, just £300
0:15:07 > 0:15:11so she can treat her grandchildren to an energetic day water skiing.
0:15:11 > 0:15:18So, let's hope we can have some energetic bidders here today when our items go under the hammer.
0:15:18 > 0:15:22The auction house is already awash with curious bidders all eyeing up the lots.
0:15:22 > 0:15:26And the child at heart in John has sought out David's toy collection.
0:15:26 > 0:15:29I knew you'd find the toys again!
0:15:29 > 0:15:32I was just about stage a commando raid there, Jenny.
0:15:32 > 0:15:35You interrupted me, I was prepping the emergency services!
0:15:35 > 0:15:38People must have cupboards full of toys like this
0:15:38 > 0:15:41and they must wonder, is it worth selling them? Is it?
0:15:41 > 0:15:46They do have lots of them hanging around, but seldom do you see a good collection like this
0:15:46 > 0:15:49in very good condition, all the accessories and most importantly,
0:15:49 > 0:15:51the original packaging. That's very important.
0:15:51 > 0:15:53So what about those flamingos?
0:15:53 > 0:15:56I loved those, but Rosemary wasn't too sure, if she'd bring them?
0:15:56 > 0:16:00Rosemary was a bit attached to those. They had a bit of history to her past
0:16:00 > 0:16:02and her employment in an antique shop.
0:16:02 > 0:16:07That's right, let's see if she's decided to bring them along.
0:16:07 > 0:16:09Come on. As the bidders start to take their seats,
0:16:09 > 0:16:13we spot our family saying goodbye to one of their collectibles.
0:16:13 > 0:16:16And it looks as if the flamingo candlesticks have flown the nest after all.
0:16:16 > 0:16:20Rosemary! You brought them!
0:16:20 > 0:16:23- Yes!- I thought, they would, didn't you, John.
0:16:23 > 0:16:27I thought you were going to have second thoughts because you did seem rather attached to them.
0:16:27 > 0:16:30- Well, I was, but these two let them go.- How about you, David?
0:16:30 > 0:16:34Did you have any second thoughts about your toy collection?
0:16:34 > 0:16:36- No, no, no.- Are you sure? - Yes. Get rid of it.
0:16:36 > 0:16:40Did you have one last staged battle or commando raid?
0:16:40 > 0:16:44No, no, no I went back to Lewis and that was it. Left them there.
0:16:44 > 0:16:47I think you're sure of one buyer cos he's been ogling them again this morning!
0:16:47 > 0:16:51He really has! How are you feeling about the sale?
0:16:51 > 0:16:53Fine. Lovely, yes. We're looking forward to it.
0:16:53 > 0:16:56- You are?- Yes.- This is fantastic.
0:16:56 > 0:17:00Confidence! All right, I think it's about to get started, actually.
0:17:00 > 0:17:01Let's go and find a good position.
0:17:04 > 0:17:07If you're planning on heading to your local auction
0:17:07 > 0:17:10be aware that commission and other possible charges will apply,
0:17:10 > 0:17:13so be sure to check the details with the saleroom first.
0:17:13 > 0:17:17As the room fills up, we take our places for the first lot of the day - the old trumpet.
0:17:17 > 0:17:21We're hoping it will reach its price tag of £40.
0:17:21 > 0:17:24I had such fun with your trumpet.
0:17:24 > 0:17:25I loved it, I really did.
0:17:25 > 0:17:29- I couldn't get a note out of it, as you'll remember.- John did.
0:17:29 > 0:17:32- I know, I know.- Full of hot air!
0:17:32 > 0:17:34Hot air that says it's going to be worth £40?
0:17:34 > 0:17:39£40 to £60. It does have that Muck mouthpiece in there, do you remember, which is quite nice.
0:17:39 > 0:17:41I'm hoping somebody spotted it.
0:17:41 > 0:17:43- Yes, £40 to £60.- OK, see how we go.
0:17:43 > 0:17:46Is it worth £20? £20 for a trumpet.
0:17:46 > 0:17:50Anybody want the lot for 20. Maiden bid of £20. £20 it s maiden bid.
0:17:50 > 0:17:52It's going to be sold for £20.
0:17:52 > 0:17:56Maiden bid then. £20 it's going for.
0:17:56 > 0:18:00- Oh, that's not good! - That wasn't terribly good at all.
0:18:00 > 0:18:02Half my bottom estimate. £20.
0:18:02 > 0:18:05How do you feel about that, Rosemary?
0:18:05 > 0:18:11Now, don't tell me, you couldn't blow it, could you!
0:18:11 > 0:18:13Well, it's enough to whet our appetite,
0:18:13 > 0:18:16but we have a long way to go to reach that target of £300.
0:18:16 > 0:18:20Let's hope our next lot, the Matchbox racing car,
0:18:20 > 0:18:23brings in its estimate of £30 to £40.
0:18:23 > 0:18:25Is it worth £20? £10 to go.
0:18:25 > 0:18:2810, 12, 14. £14 for that lot at £14.
0:18:28 > 0:18:30£14...
0:18:30 > 0:18:33£14, need a bit more than that.
0:18:33 > 0:18:35£14. Not sold.
0:18:35 > 0:18:38- Ah.- Not sold at £14.
0:18:38 > 0:18:42I thought that was a rather cheap lot if it would have been sold.
0:18:42 > 0:18:45Well, that's a disappointment.
0:18:45 > 0:18:50The Matchbox car is a non-starter and goes home with David.
0:18:50 > 0:18:54Next under the hammer is the boxed clarinet valued at £30 to £50.
0:18:54 > 0:18:58Hopefully, someone in this crowd is a musician.
0:18:58 > 0:19:0130 for the lot? 20 for the lot. 20, 22, 24...
0:19:01 > 0:19:04- Come on, he's not pushing it up very much, is he?- £26 for the lot.
0:19:04 > 0:19:09Anybody want this lot at 26? 28, 30.
0:19:09 > 0:19:13£30. At £30, with me at 30, then?
0:19:13 > 0:19:15- Not sold.- He's left it unsold.
0:19:15 > 0:19:17So you still have your clarinet.
0:19:17 > 0:19:19- Yeah.- So, despite John's valuation,
0:19:19 > 0:19:22the auctioneer thinks the clarinet is worth more,
0:19:22 > 0:19:24and refuses to sell it for just £30.
0:19:24 > 0:19:27That's not helping our water skiing fund.
0:19:27 > 0:19:30Maybe our next item will get pulses racing?
0:19:30 > 0:19:33It's the good-as-new Corgi Emergency Set
0:19:33 > 0:19:37which John's priced at £40 to £60.
0:19:37 > 0:19:40I think that's a cheap price for a good set.
0:19:40 > 0:19:43Is it worth £20? 22, 24, 26?
0:19:43 > 0:19:45£26 for that bit of Corgi for £26.
0:19:45 > 0:19:49At £26. 26 at £26. 28 anywhere?
0:19:49 > 0:19:5226... Not sold I'm afraid.
0:19:52 > 0:19:56You didn't put reserves on any of these items, did you?
0:19:56 > 0:19:58No. The toys are going home.
0:19:58 > 0:20:01£26. It looks like they're going back to the room, David!
0:20:01 > 0:20:03Oh, no, another unsold
0:20:03 > 0:20:07and with just £20 towards the family day out so far,
0:20:07 > 0:20:09things are looking decidedly dodgy.
0:20:09 > 0:20:13Will the bidders be any more generous with our next lot?
0:20:13 > 0:20:17It's the Praktica camera valued at £20 to £30.
0:20:17 > 0:20:19£10 for the camera? 10, 12, 14.
0:20:19 > 0:20:20£14, surely for the camera. At £14.
0:20:20 > 0:20:24£14 anybody? 16 anywhere?
0:20:24 > 0:20:2916, 18, 20, 22? £22.
0:20:29 > 0:20:31Someone's answering your prayers!
0:20:31 > 0:20:3322...
0:20:33 > 0:20:37Very good. £22.
0:20:37 > 0:20:40Finally, some good news.
0:20:40 > 0:20:43The camera goes for £2 over its estimate and it's smiles all round.
0:20:43 > 0:20:46Next up is the novelty walking stick.
0:20:46 > 0:20:48We're looking for at least £80.
0:20:48 > 0:20:51Has our luck changed at last?
0:20:51 > 0:20:55I did stick my neck on the line on this and put £80 to £100 on it.
0:20:55 > 0:20:57A bit overambitious, do you think?
0:20:57 > 0:21:01I don't know, I might be getting the cane after from Rosemary after I think, possibly!
0:21:01 > 0:21:05Hopefully not. Hopefully, I'll be giving you a big hug.
0:21:05 > 0:21:07That I'd I much prefer.
0:21:07 > 0:21:09Worth £50, 50, 5...
0:21:09 > 0:21:1060? £60 for the man in a hat.
0:21:10 > 0:21:15That's £60, and 5 anybody? £60.
0:21:15 > 0:21:19And 5 anywhere. £60. £60?
0:21:19 > 0:21:21Not sold, I'm afraid.
0:21:21 > 0:21:24Oh, no!
0:21:24 > 0:21:26Now, that's a real surprise.
0:21:26 > 0:21:28We had such high hopes for the walking stick.
0:21:28 > 0:21:30We're over halfway through the auction
0:21:30 > 0:21:32and a far cry from our target of £300.
0:21:32 > 0:21:37The family's hopes of a day out water skiing look in serious danger of being dashed
0:21:37 > 0:21:42and when our next lot, the electric train fails to raise any interest in the room...
0:21:42 > 0:21:46- Not sold.- ..it's more disappointment all round.
0:21:46 > 0:21:50This auction business is proving a bit trickier than they had expected.
0:21:50 > 0:21:53There's obviously a lack of toy collectors in the room
0:21:53 > 0:21:58which doesn't bode well for David's huge collection of Action Man figures.
0:21:58 > 0:22:00Unsold, I'm afraid.
0:22:00 > 0:22:03Sadly, they join the growing list of items heading back home.
0:22:03 > 0:22:06We're all beginning to feel a bit deflated
0:22:06 > 0:22:09and don't hold out too much hope for our next lot -
0:22:09 > 0:22:12the collection of Smurfs.
0:22:12 > 0:22:15Is it worth £20 for this toy at £20?
0:22:15 > 0:22:1720 I'm bid. At £20 a maiden bid of 20.
0:22:17 > 0:22:23At £20 it's a maiden bid. 22, 24, 26,
0:22:23 > 0:22:2728, 30, 32, 34,
0:22:27 > 0:22:3136, 38, 40...
0:22:31 > 0:22:34At £40 then to my left at £40.
0:22:34 > 0:22:37- 45, 50... £50.- That's a lot.
0:22:37 > 0:22:41For the Smurf at £50. At £50 it's going then for £50.
0:22:41 > 0:22:43At £50, here we go.
0:22:43 > 0:22:47We've sold something.
0:22:47 > 0:22:49You sold the Smurfs!
0:22:49 > 0:22:53Now, don't you start telling me you want one now! You can't have them!
0:22:53 > 0:22:56That's good news.
0:22:56 > 0:23:00- Yes, it's something.- She doesn't know what to do with herself, she's sold something.
0:23:00 > 0:23:01Well, who would have thought it?
0:23:01 > 0:23:06The men in blue come in on estimate bringing in a much-needed £50.
0:23:06 > 0:23:07At last, smiles all round,
0:23:07 > 0:23:11but with only one item left to go under the hammer,
0:23:11 > 0:23:12will we reach our £300 target?
0:23:12 > 0:23:15We're hoping our last item will come to our aid.
0:23:15 > 0:23:18Start me for £50 for the candlesticks. 50 I'm bid.
0:23:18 > 0:23:2355, 60, 65, 70,
0:23:23 > 0:23:2775, 80, You're 85?
0:23:27 > 0:23:3390. 95, 100, 110,
0:23:33 > 0:23:36120, 130, 140, 150...
0:23:36 > 0:23:39150 nearer to me at £150.
0:23:39 > 0:23:45160 there. 160, 170, 180, 190,
0:23:45 > 0:23:52200, 210, 220, 230,

0:23:55 > 0:23:59230, they're going for 230. Any more? 240.
0:23:59 > 0:24:04You've got them for £240, it looks like. £240 it is, then.
0:24:04 > 0:24:07CHEERING
0:24:10 > 0:24:12What a relief.
0:24:12 > 0:24:17At last! £240 is three times John's lower estimate.
0:24:17 > 0:24:19What a rollercoaster ride.
0:24:19 > 0:24:21So, was it all worth it?
0:24:21 > 0:24:26Well, that's it. I'm very glad to see you've retained your sense of humour!
0:24:26 > 0:24:30Which was quite important through a large part of this auction!
0:24:30 > 0:24:34I know, just nobody wanted the toys, did they?
0:24:34 > 0:24:38But you only wanted £300 for your day out water skiing with the grandchildren.
0:24:38 > 0:24:45It's all you want, not a lot to ask and I have to tell you, you are going to have...
0:24:45 > 0:24:49- ..£332!- Oh, excellent!
0:24:49 > 0:24:51You will be able to have a good day out, won't you?
0:24:51 > 0:24:53You now don't have to get in the wetsuit
0:24:53 > 0:24:56and start water skiing because you haven't got enough money!
0:24:56 > 0:25:01There's always a bright side! Well done, thanks everyone.
0:25:01 > 0:25:05John can't come, either, because he likes water skiing.
0:25:05 > 0:25:07I don't want to see John in a wetsuit!
0:25:07 > 0:25:09It ain't pretty!
0:25:15 > 0:25:20Two weeks later, and Rosemary's set to splash the £332 she raised at auction
0:25:20 > 0:25:22on a wet and wild family day out.
0:25:22 > 0:25:25- These are all your grandchildren? - Yes, they are.
0:25:25 > 0:25:29- You've been really busy, haven't you! - Some of us have!
0:25:29 > 0:25:32Right, OK, let's go and get some wetsuits
0:25:32 > 0:25:34and go out on the water and have some fun.
0:25:34 > 0:25:38- Slowly roll forward.- Time to learn the basics before hitting the lake
0:25:38 > 0:25:40and putting theory into practice.
0:25:40 > 0:25:45I want you to have your chest up, arms straight, bend the knees.
0:25:45 > 0:25:48OK, and push that bum in.
0:25:48 > 0:25:50Squeeze those bum cheeks together.
0:25:51 > 0:25:56This is the life! Bye, guys.
0:25:56 > 0:26:01Rosemary's got the right idea, but there's no stopping the grandchildren. Whoops!
0:26:01 > 0:26:04It's not long until they're up on their skis
0:26:04 > 0:26:08and the whole family are enjoying every minute of their day out on the water.
0:26:17 > 0:26:20For me to get the whole family together for a day out
