0:00:02 > 0:00:04Welcome to Cash in the Attic, the show where we hunt
0:00:04 > 0:00:08for treasures in your home and then sell them for you at auction.
0:00:08 > 0:00:11Today, we are in Surrey and I've just stopped off
0:00:11 > 0:00:14at the spectacular Ham House.
0:00:15 > 0:00:18A fine Stuart mansion on the banks of the River Thames,
0:00:18 > 0:00:21Ham House was built in 1610 for Sir Thomas Vavasour,
0:00:21 > 0:00:23Knight Marshal to James I.
0:00:23 > 0:00:28After remodelling and refurbishment, the last 300 years
0:00:28 > 0:00:32have seen little change to the house or its famous beautiful gardens.
0:00:32 > 0:00:35Right, I'm off now, but hopefully we're gonna have
0:00:35 > 0:00:39a few more intriguing stories to tell just a few miles from here.
0:00:59 > 0:01:01Coming up on today's Cash in the Attic -
0:01:01 > 0:01:05our expert's rather pleased with one of his valuations.
0:01:06 > 0:01:08That's excellent. I'm really pleased with that.
0:01:08 > 0:01:11- Yes. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.- Definitely.
0:01:11 > 0:01:14'While another of his estimates makes us all light-headed.'
0:01:14 > 0:01:16Go and have a lie down.
0:01:16 > 0:01:20We're gonna do some more searching. We'll see you later on.
0:01:20 > 0:01:23And there are celebrations all round come auction day.
0:01:23 > 0:01:27- (Oh, fantastic.) - (I'm gonna kiss you.)
0:01:27 > 0:01:30But will we have reached our target when the final hammer falls.
0:01:32 > 0:01:36I've come to New Malden in Surrey to visit an adventurous woman
0:01:36 > 0:01:38who wants the Cash in the Attic team
0:01:38 > 0:01:41to raise money, so she can take to the skies.
0:01:41 > 0:01:45This terraced house is home to drama teacher
0:01:45 > 0:01:46and acting coach Sharon White.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49Now, Sharon has inherited a wealth of curiosities
0:01:49 > 0:01:52and collectables from friends and relatives,
0:01:52 > 0:01:56and they're filling every shelf and cupboard in this busy family home.
0:01:56 > 0:01:59But, she's decided to turn the clutter into cash for the trip
0:01:59 > 0:02:02of a lifetime and she's called her father, Peter,
0:02:02 > 0:02:04and the Cash team in to help.
0:02:04 > 0:02:06Hi, Jonty. How are you?
0:02:06 > 0:02:09- Chris, how are you?- I'm very well. Tough mission for you today.- OK.
0:02:09 > 0:02:13We've gotta reunite family members, halfway across the world.
0:02:13 > 0:02:15- Right. Where we talking? - OK, do you want some clues?- Yep.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18It's the home of the bungee jump.
0:02:18 > 0:02:22- Toughie?- Don't know.- The hacker. - I know where you're coming from.
0:02:22 > 0:02:24- The All Blacks. - Right. So, it's not Skegness.
0:02:24 > 0:02:27A little further. It has got coastlines though.
0:02:27 > 0:02:29Now, I want you to have a good look around.
0:02:29 > 0:02:33We need some money, some big money and I'll go and meet the family.
0:02:35 > 0:02:38That's what I like to see, people at work.
0:02:38 > 0:02:41- You must be Sharon and this is Peter.- Hello.
0:02:41 > 0:02:44How are you? Nice to meet you. This is what I like to see.
0:02:44 > 0:02:46Who's working harder?
0:02:46 > 0:02:48- Erm...Me.- Good, that's what I wanna see.
0:02:48 > 0:02:50Now, you've contacted us, why?
0:02:50 > 0:02:54Because erm...I'm hoping to go to New Zealand with my two boys,
0:02:54 > 0:02:56to give them a really great holiday.
0:02:56 > 0:02:58And it costs a lot of money!
0:02:58 > 0:03:01So, I'm hoping to raise some money, to get them out there.
0:03:01 > 0:03:07- How much were you hoping to raise? Realistically?- About £500, £600.
0:03:07 > 0:03:08Oh, that's quite a lot, isn't it?
0:03:08 > 0:03:11Yeah, because we've got to pay for a month's accommodation
0:03:11 > 0:03:15out there and for a hiring of a car, so the boys can have some fun,
0:03:15 > 0:03:17and we can sleep somewhere.
0:03:17 > 0:03:20- Right. Dad, are you up to this? - Very much so.
0:03:20 > 0:03:23She's had some tough times and she's come through them well.
0:03:23 > 0:03:27- She's an ace woman. - With the help of this wonderful man.
0:03:27 > 0:03:31It all sounds good, but all this mutual appreciation is rubbish.
0:03:31 > 0:03:33We've gotta get on with some work. Follow me inside,
0:03:33 > 0:03:37- cos this stuff - no good. Inside. - Right.- OK.
0:03:37 > 0:03:41Well, Sharon and her sons obviously deserve their global adventure
0:03:41 > 0:03:44and with a £600 target, hopefully her collectables
0:03:44 > 0:03:46will prove to be just the ticket.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49And, we've got our own explorer, of the antiques world that is,
0:03:49 > 0:03:52on hand to help. Jonty Hearnden's been in the auction trade all his life
0:03:52 > 0:03:55and it looks like he's spotted our first gem.
0:03:55 > 0:03:57Jonty's found something already.
0:03:57 > 0:04:00I certainly have. Look at this, it's a lovely glass box.
0:04:00 > 0:04:02Look at this, with a hinged lid. Beautiful.
0:04:02 > 0:04:04Beautiful. Where's it from?
0:04:04 > 0:04:07That is from an actor friend of ours,
0:04:07 > 0:04:09called Neville Barber, who went to RADA.
0:04:09 > 0:04:12It's lovely, it's really charming.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15- Now, the first thing to note is that it's not British.- Right.
0:04:15 > 0:04:19It's continental, but moreover, it's Italian. OK.
0:04:19 > 0:04:22It's Murano, so it's Venetian.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25We're looking at a Venetian glass casket.
0:04:25 > 0:04:28Date - a little bit difficult to give an exact date,
0:04:28 > 0:04:31but I would suggest, really early 20th century.
0:04:31 > 0:04:37Open it up, you can see that this is a brass, or gilded, metal rim
0:04:37 > 0:04:40and, I don't know if you've really noticed before,
0:04:40 > 0:04:44- but you've got these two bobbles on either side...- Right.
0:04:44 > 0:04:46..and holes there. Holes on the inside
0:04:46 > 0:04:48- and that's for a handle, a drop handle...- Right.
0:04:48 > 0:04:51..would've been applied inside there.
0:04:51 > 0:04:53So, those drop handles have gone.
0:04:53 > 0:04:55- Right.- But somehow, for my money,
0:04:55 > 0:04:58it doesn't seem to have detracted from its shape and form.
0:04:58 > 0:05:00I just thought it was beautiful.
0:05:00 > 0:05:03I don't want to ruin it, we're talking about beauty and stuff,
0:05:03 > 0:05:05but how much is it worth?
0:05:05 > 0:05:07- Oh, right, OK. - Come on, we wanna see some cash.
0:05:07 > 0:05:11- Some money for this trip.- Well, there's no cash on the inside,
0:05:11 > 0:05:14but on the outside, the box, because it's in such good order,
0:05:14 > 0:05:17there's no chips. Cos when it comes to glass, check for chips,
0:05:17 > 0:05:20- because that will seriously affect its value.- Right.
0:05:20 > 0:05:24But that has to be £100 to £150 worth of box.
0:05:24 > 0:05:27- Wow.- Oooh.- Did you know that? - No, not a clue.
0:05:27 > 0:05:30I just thought, it's a beautiful little box,
0:05:30 > 0:05:31but I had no idea what it was worth.
0:05:31 > 0:05:35Our eyes have lit up, but are you prepared to put that to auction?
0:05:35 > 0:05:38'It's a fantastic start, but if we are gonna get that £600
0:05:38 > 0:05:41'for Sharon's trip to New Zealand, we've a long way to go.
0:05:41 > 0:05:44'So, it's down to business. Peter's been busy rummaging already
0:05:44 > 0:05:48'and finds this unusual Limoges porcelain snuff box.
0:05:48 > 0:05:51'Certainly not to be sniffed at, at £40 to £60.
0:05:52 > 0:05:57'In the living room, Sharon's made a potentially high-flying find.'
0:05:57 > 0:05:59Jonty?
0:05:59 > 0:06:02- What have you got?- I've got Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang.
0:06:02 > 0:06:04Wow, that takes me back. Do you remember the movie?
0:06:04 > 0:06:05Yes, I do.
0:06:05 > 0:06:11The bit I remember the most is when the car flew off the cliff.
0:06:11 > 0:06:12When it flew it was fantastic.
0:06:12 > 0:06:15Going to tuck the wings away and have a look on the underside here.
0:06:15 > 0:06:18- Can you see? This was made by Corgi toys.- Yeah.
0:06:18 > 0:06:22OK, Corgi cars, they were the big rivals to Dinky.
0:06:22 > 0:06:26And Corgi cars had all sorts of moving parts to it
0:06:26 > 0:06:29and, characteristically, we've got wings that come out.
0:06:29 > 0:06:30Fantastic.
0:06:30 > 0:06:34Now, this little car has become a bit of a collectors' item.
0:06:34 > 0:06:37Simply because of the association with the movie.
0:06:37 > 0:06:41And if you've got it in its original box, in mint condition,
0:06:41 > 0:06:44its worth well in excess of £100 at auction.
0:06:44 > 0:06:47Quite extraordinary. To think, it would have cost a few shillings.
0:06:47 > 0:06:50But our little car, here, does have a value.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53I'm a little concerned about the bumper missing.
0:06:53 > 0:06:58I'm a little bit concerned about the wheel here, this damage here.
0:06:58 > 0:07:02Should have the spokes, yeah, on the interior, there.
0:07:02 > 0:07:05But somebody should pay, really, between £40 and £60.
0:07:05 > 0:07:07But be warned,
0:07:07 > 0:07:11the market at the moment, really wants things in mint condition.
0:07:11 > 0:07:15Well, the damage may make our expert cautious, but £40
0:07:15 > 0:07:18is still a nice addition to the New Zealand fund.
0:07:18 > 0:07:21'I'm pitching in, as well. I found two miniature portraits
0:07:21 > 0:07:23'in the dining room. Jonty packs them for auction,
0:07:23 > 0:07:28'with a far from miniature £100 to £150 estimate.
0:07:28 > 0:07:32'Meanwhile, in the hallway, Peter's proving a bit of magpie.'
0:07:33 > 0:07:37- I've found here a shell. - Oh, look at that.
0:07:37 > 0:07:41I'm not sure what it's used for, it might be for butter.
0:07:41 > 0:07:43Where is this from?
0:07:43 > 0:07:48This comes from my mother's mother
0:07:48 > 0:07:52and she had it in Deganwy where she lived
0:07:52 > 0:07:55and she left it to us.
0:07:55 > 0:07:59Lovely, so is this its presentation box as well?
0:07:59 > 0:08:01That's the original box that it came in.
0:08:01 > 0:08:06Let me just place that back in there so we can see how wonderful it is.
0:08:06 > 0:08:08So, here we've got the scallop shell and this is solid silver
0:08:08 > 0:08:10because here we have the hallmarks.
0:08:10 > 0:08:15I tell you what I really love about this set is its presentation box.
0:08:15 > 0:08:18And you are looking round the £50 mark just to sell this item alone.
0:08:18 > 0:08:23- Very good amount, that sounds excellent.- What else have you got?
0:08:23 > 0:08:25We have two silver cigarette cases here
0:08:25 > 0:08:29- which may be of interest to collectors.- OK, now the first thing
0:08:29 > 0:08:31I always check out is whether it's solid silver
0:08:31 > 0:08:34and you're absolutely right, they are solid silver.
0:08:34 > 0:08:36We've got the lion passant there.
0:08:36 > 0:08:38Silver, so that's solid silver.
0:08:38 > 0:08:42And also often silver cigarette cases of this sort of age are shaped -
0:08:42 > 0:08:46to fit into the breast pocket, or the side pocket, often the back pocket as well.
0:08:46 > 0:08:50What sort of value would you put on these items?
0:08:50 > 0:08:53Well, if an auctioneer was to see these two
0:08:53 > 0:08:56he would probably put the two together
0:08:56 > 0:08:57so you would get more value.
0:08:57 > 0:09:01Because they are solid silver, which is the great, great thing,
0:09:01 > 0:09:04a huge difference between these being plated and solid silver
0:09:04 > 0:09:09but collectively here we are looking at between £50 and £70 the two.
0:09:09 > 0:09:13So, your silver hoard that you've got gathered together here for me
0:09:13 > 0:09:16is really between £100 and £150, that sort of ball park.
0:09:16 > 0:09:19- Oh, that sounds excellent.- Yes? - I'm really pleased with that.
0:09:19 > 0:09:21Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
0:09:21 > 0:09:23That's good, excellent.
0:09:23 > 0:09:25I don't know about that joke, Jonty,
0:09:25 > 0:09:30but £100 for the silver is a fantastic find. Great work, guys.
0:09:30 > 0:09:32Now, Jonty's off to explore outside the house
0:09:32 > 0:09:36and I'm going to catch up with Mum and Dad taking a quick break.
0:09:36 > 0:09:41I wondered where you were, having a bit of tea break while the rest of us were rummaging around.
0:09:42 > 0:09:44Well needed.
0:09:44 > 0:09:47Now, tell me a little bit more about your trip to New Zealand.
0:09:47 > 0:09:49My brother Adam has been out there
0:09:49 > 0:09:53for a year, year and a half and he's coming back in February.
0:09:53 > 0:09:58I thought it would be a great opportunity to take the boys there
0:09:58 > 0:10:01because they've not been on a proper holiday
0:10:01 > 0:10:04ever, abroad - and so I'd love to take them somewhere really special.
0:10:04 > 0:10:10New Zealand is pretty special but it's well known for its water sports and lively activities.
0:10:10 > 0:10:12- Is that up your street? - Absolutely up my street.
0:10:12 > 0:10:15Dad, since we were four, has been building boats
0:10:15 > 0:10:18and doing all that so I've always been on the water
0:10:18 > 0:10:22rowing, canoeing and Adam's always loved that.
0:10:22 > 0:10:26Adam used to be a white water rafter.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29So, out there he's been surfing and doing all these things.
0:10:29 > 0:10:31So, it's a good opportunity
0:10:31 > 0:10:35to take the boys out there and do maybe a bit of kite surfing.
0:10:35 > 0:10:39- So, what is kite surfing?- Well, it's something I've always wanted to do.
0:10:39 > 0:10:42It's a bit mad. I've learnt to actually fly a kite
0:10:42 > 0:10:46which is quite amazing because the kites are huge.
0:10:46 > 0:10:48The one I've had is three metres,
0:10:48 > 0:10:52which is huge, but there are six-metre ones and more.
0:10:52 > 0:10:55And basically you fly the kite and then you try and
0:10:55 > 0:10:59stand on a board and fly across the water on the board with the kite.
0:10:59 > 0:11:04- And are you going on this trip to New Zealand, Dad?- No, I'm not going.
0:11:04 > 0:11:07Economy flights for 30-odd hours
0:11:07 > 0:11:09are really not my cup of tea
0:11:09 > 0:11:13so I'm biding my time until he comes back.
0:11:13 > 0:11:14Okey dokey. We need to raise some money.
0:11:14 > 0:11:18It doesn't look as if my tea is actually making its way to me
0:11:18 > 0:11:21so we better get back in and do some work.
0:11:22 > 0:11:26Well, if I'm not getting a cuppa then it's definitely back to work.
0:11:26 > 0:11:30Luckily Jonty is leaving no room unrummaged and no shelf unsearched
0:11:30 > 0:11:33and he's come up trumps again
0:11:33 > 0:11:38with this set of five art nouveau books, price £50 to £100.
0:11:38 > 0:11:40Sharon and I are searching upstairs
0:11:40 > 0:11:44and I've spotted an interesting looking item.
0:11:44 > 0:11:46Come and join us in the bedroom.
0:11:46 > 0:11:48A bit of bedtime reading.
0:11:48 > 0:11:51I think we've found a fantastic little book here.
0:11:51 > 0:11:56Signed by John Gielgud, wow. And you've got a date here.
0:11:56 > 0:12:02That looks like 1975 but I know this book happened to be printed in 1979,
0:12:02 > 0:12:03so that's rather odd.
0:12:03 > 0:12:05So, that must be one of his nines.
0:12:05 > 0:12:06Intriguing.
0:12:06 > 0:12:08Also if you look at his signature,
0:12:08 > 0:12:11I don't know if you've really studied this before
0:12:11 > 0:12:15but it has the kind of precise neatness of the man himself
0:12:15 > 0:12:18in that it's not this artistic squiggle.
0:12:18 > 0:12:22Signatures are all down to how collectable they are.
0:12:22 > 0:12:26John Gielgud is such a big name still that his autograph
0:12:26 > 0:12:31or his signed books will be very desirable, very, very desirable.
0:12:31 > 0:12:34So, Gielgud's worth something - but how much?
0:12:34 > 0:12:38- That now has to be worth, at auction £40 to £60.- No.
0:12:38 > 0:12:40Yes.
0:12:40 > 0:12:42- That's not bad, is it? - For a little book.
0:12:42 > 0:12:45That is fantastic news. Go and have a lie down,
0:12:45 > 0:12:50dream you're John Gielgud and we better go and do some more searching. We'll see you later on.
0:12:50 > 0:12:52I need a lie down after that.
0:12:52 > 0:12:56While Sharon recovers we carry on the search and our New Zealand fund
0:12:56 > 0:13:00gets another boost from this trio of Beatrix Potter figurines
0:13:00 > 0:13:02which Jonty values at £30 to £40.
0:13:02 > 0:13:07And Sharon braves the attic and finds this trio of Beswick Winnie the Pooh characters.
0:13:07 > 0:13:10They're small in size but not in value, as Jonty gives them
0:13:10 > 0:13:13£60 to £100 price tag.
0:13:13 > 0:13:15And we're almost finished for the day,
0:13:15 > 0:13:20but in the dining room, Jonty's eye for quality has spotted one final lot.
0:13:20 > 0:13:21That looks interesting.
0:13:21 > 0:13:24A vase for you. This looks interesting here.
0:13:24 > 0:13:27- Lovely contrasts.- Yes.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30So, can you see on the underside here, see what that says?
0:13:30 > 0:13:35- Yes, it says Moorcroft.- William Moorcroft, in the 20th century,
0:13:35 > 0:13:39was one of the most prolific designers, a very influential designer
0:13:39 > 0:13:44and he really started his business, his craft, at the turn of the century.
0:13:44 > 0:13:49The style, the design was very art nouveau.
0:13:49 > 0:13:54So, lots of flowers, lots of squirls, lots of organic growth
0:13:54 > 0:13:58appearing on the side of his vases and I think that's probably

0:20:58 > 0:21:01I particularly like the butter dish in its original case, beautiful.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51and it's banked us an excellent £120.
0:21:51 > 0:21:53If only we had more silver to sell.
0:21:53 > 0:21:56Instead we try our luck with the Moorcroft vase and tray,
