0:00:02 > 0:00:06Welcome to Cash In The Attic, the show that helps you find hidden treasures in your home,

0:00:06 > 0:00:07and then helps you sell them at auction.

0:00:07 > 0:00:12Today, we are in Epsom, famous for three things -

0:00:12 > 0:00:16the Downs, the salts and horse racing.

0:00:16 > 0:00:22And this is South Hatch, stables with a sporting history spanning hundreds of years.

0:00:22 > 0:00:26Winners of the Derby and Grand National have spent time here,

0:00:26 > 0:00:29and it was where Winston Churchill kept his racehorses.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32Since 1984, the racing club has had a restaurant

0:00:32 > 0:00:37and a conference facility on site, with plenty of racing history proudly on display

0:00:37 > 0:00:39throughout the building.

0:00:39 > 0:00:45This place is packed full of wonderful memorabilia of Epsom's thoroughbred racing heritage.

0:00:45 > 0:00:49Let's hope the going is just as good where we're heading next,

0:00:49 > 0:00:53as we begin our hunt for collectibles and antiques to go to auction.

0:01:13 > 0:01:19Coming up on today's Cash In The Attic, a family with a lifelong passion for collecting...

0:01:19 > 0:01:21You must have been a rag-and-bone man

0:01:21 > 0:01:24- in your time. Is that right? - I think they called me a few names.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27..an expert who's hoping not to make any enemies.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29He's harsh but fair, aren't you, Jonty?

0:01:29 > 0:01:33Well, I would like to be everybody's friend in the auction room.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36But it looks like we're in the good books come auction day.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39I always said you two were good eggs.

0:01:39 > 0:01:45So let's hope we're still smiling when the final hammer falls.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Well, I've come to Surrey to meet a man who hopes

0:01:47 > 0:01:50the Cash In The Attic team will help him take to the road

0:01:50 > 0:01:53in a new set of wheels.

0:01:53 > 0:02:00This cosy bungalow in the heart of Surrey is home to retired insurance salesman John Manton.

0:02:00 > 0:02:05Now, John's a real antiques addict and has been collecting all kinds of treasures since he was just 28.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09His house is an Aladdin's cave.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12But he wants to raise some cash for an important new purchase

0:02:12 > 0:02:18so has decided to trade in some of his antiques, and daughter Angela is on hand to help.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20- Hello, Jonty. - Chris, how are you doing?

0:02:20 > 0:02:22Great to see you. Very well. I've been horsing around a bit.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Ah, well, I thought you might be, as we are in Epsom.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28- Yes, the home of the Derby. Are you a betting man?- Not really.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30I don't really do flutters on the horses, I have to admit.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32Well, I'm going fancy your chances today,

0:02:32 > 0:02:37because the man in here, the star of the show, has been collecting antiques for over 40 years.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Really? Sounds like my kind of guy.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41- He certainly is. Want to go and meet him?- Yeah.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44- I'll race you in. - OK, first one in gets tea.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49Hello, guys. Thanks for letting us into your home.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52Now, OK, own up, who called Cash In The Attic team?

0:02:52 > 0:02:53- I did.- Why is that?

0:02:53 > 0:02:57Because every time I come round and see my dad, he's sitting here

0:02:57 > 0:03:00every single day watching the TV, and this programme's on.

0:03:00 > 0:03:01- He's collected...- Are you a fan?

0:03:01 > 0:03:04I'm afraid I am. I'm afraid I am.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Don't be afraid. We love fans.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09I'm pleased to say I am. I'm not afraid I am, no.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13Well, I've had a good look around. You've got plenty to look at for us.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15- What are we likely to find? - All sorts.

0:03:15 > 0:03:20Writing boxes, other little boxes, snuff boxes,

0:03:20 > 0:03:23pill boxes, watches, coins.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26All bits and pieces. Well, Jonty's got his work cut out, obviously.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Now, we want to raise some money.

0:03:29 > 0:03:30What do we want to raise some money for?

0:03:30 > 0:03:34We do, we do, because it's about time Dad changed his car.

0:03:34 > 0:03:39That's what we're going to do, try and raise some money towards him exchanging his car.

0:03:39 > 0:03:44- What sort of car are we looking at? Ferrari, or...?- Oh, no. No, no, not exactly that, no, no.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46Just a small car. The car I've got is too big now.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48I've had it over ten years.

0:03:48 > 0:03:52So I think it's been of good service to me.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55And, John, how much money do we want to us raise?

0:03:55 > 0:03:58500-plus, just towards helping, you know?

0:03:58 > 0:04:03- Well, that sounds gettable. Do you reckon we've got enough in the house to get up there?- I should say so.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06Right, well, there's only one way of finding out, you know.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09- Let's go and look.- Follow me and have a rummage. Come on.- Good idea.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13Getting John on the road in style is certainly a great incentive

0:04:13 > 0:04:16for us all to roll up our sleeves and get rummaging.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20Driving the search in the right direction is our expert, Jonty Hearnden.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24With such a wealth of treasures to choose from, he's in his element today,

0:04:24 > 0:04:28and he finds John and I with the day's first discovery.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31Ah, Jonty, just the man.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34This is incredible. There are so many!

0:04:34 > 0:04:36Which was your first one?

0:04:36 > 0:04:40Some of them I must have had for 40 years.

0:04:40 > 0:04:45And they range... Some of these are wristwatches, but the vast majority are pocket watches.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49The one for me that really stands out is this gold half-hunter.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53- That is lovely. - This looks really very nice.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Look at that. Isn't that lovely?

0:04:55 > 0:04:57Now, this is known as a half-hunter.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01A full hunter doesn't have the piercing in the middle.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03And probably known as a hunter,

0:05:03 > 0:05:06simply because when you are out hunting,

0:05:06 > 0:05:10you need to protect the hands and the glass.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12So if you had a fall, for instance,

0:05:12 > 0:05:17this is a protected layer to save your beautiful pocket watch.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Let's get down to the dirty business, Jonty.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21How much is the collection worth?

0:05:21 > 0:05:25- Value, £150 upwards. - That sounds good.- All right?

0:05:25 > 0:05:29Obviously, they've got to work, so you'd better carry on looking around the house

0:05:29 > 0:05:31while we work out which ones are actually going.

0:05:31 > 0:05:35- You start winding that end, John, I'll start winding these. - I'm running out of time.

0:05:35 > 0:05:36You're running out of time.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38I'll do the jokes around here, Jonty.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42But with £150 in the car fund, I'll let you off for now.

0:05:42 > 0:05:47It's onwards and upwards, though, with our search, as that £500 target is a way off yet.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50Angela's been tacking one of the bedrooms and she banks us another

0:05:50 > 0:05:53few pounds with these boxes of silver and copper coins.

0:05:53 > 0:05:58They're mainly British in origin, and Jonty values them at £40 to £60.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01Meanwhile, in the hallway, our avid antiques collector

0:06:01 > 0:06:05has decided to send this Victorian silver christening tankard to auction as well.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09It tops up our fund by another £30 to £50.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13And next door, Angela's been looking high and low.

0:06:13 > 0:06:19- Jonty?- What have we got there? - Do you think this would be worth anything?

0:06:19 > 0:06:22So, we've got loads of these similar kinds of figures.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24- It's a connection from my grandmother.- Are they?- Mm.

0:06:24 > 0:06:30Right. So, she had a penchant for what looked like 18th-century romantic figures, really. Yeah.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34If you look at all the figures, all the designs, they all have

0:06:34 > 0:06:38this 18th-century look, but they're not 18th century.

0:06:38 > 0:06:45In fact, if I were to turn this figure upside down, can you see here it says, "Made in GDR"?

0:06:45 > 0:06:49That's the German Democratic Republic, formed after the Second World War.

0:06:49 > 0:06:55So, by definition, all these figures would have been made post the Second World War.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59- We will all these in as one collection.- OK.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01Let the dealers buy them.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04They can split up the collection as they see fit.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08- But we're really looking at between £100 and £200 for the whole collection.- Right.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11- All right? Are you happy about that? - Absolutely.

0:07:11 > 0:07:16Well, they might not be genuine 18th century, but the figures still bank us another £100.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18So they're definitely a good find.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22After a successful start to the day, I leave Mr Hearnden to carry on

0:07:22 > 0:07:25the search and catch up with John and Angela in the living room.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27I see it's tea time.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30Just about, having a well-earned rest.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32- Yes. - No wonder you are having a rest.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34There is so much stuff in the house.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36Where has it all come from, John?

0:07:36 > 0:07:38Here, there and everywhere.

0:07:38 > 0:07:39All four corners.

0:07:39 > 0:07:44Yeah, but what did you do to come across all of this stuff? You must have been emptying people's houses.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48Well, I have emptied some people's houses, people that I knew.

0:07:48 > 0:07:53And I've collected quite a bit on my own various places.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56I've bought it from different people. All over the place.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58I've always had an interest, and whatever I've liked...

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Well, Angela, we've all been working hard. Does he deserve us?

0:08:01 > 0:08:06I should think he does! He's spent a lot of years collecting it for us

0:08:06 > 0:08:10to be able to be here today to even have the enjoyment of it.

0:08:10 > 0:08:14There's so many very old items all under one roof.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16Have you got more surprises for us?

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Who knows? Who knows?

0:08:19 > 0:08:21What is hiding up there?

0:08:21 > 0:08:26- Well, shall we have a look? - Let's go.- Come on, then. Let's go and have a look.- Okey-doke.

0:08:26 > 0:08:31Well, it sounds as if we've only scratched the surface of John's collection so far.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33So it's back to work to get him that £500.

0:08:33 > 0:08:38Our Jonty's still hard at work next door, and he's found a set of six small clocks

0:08:38 > 0:08:42which he hopes could top up our coffers by £40 to £60.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46And there's another good addition to our auction haul when Angela finds

0:08:46 > 0:08:53this Imperial Service Medal with certificate, and a Victory Medal, which Jonty values at £20 to £30.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55Our search is galloping along.

0:08:55 > 0:09:00And in the living room, it's time for John's collection of boxes to come under our expert's scrutiny.

0:09:00 > 0:09:06Jonty, you look as if you've found a trunk of treasure there, or three trunks.

0:09:06 > 0:09:07Three trunks of treasure.

0:09:07 > 0:09:11Not so much buried treasure, but hoarded treasure.

0:09:11 > 0:09:15- What have we got in here, John, just bits and pieces?- Everything.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19You must have been a rag-and-bone man in your time. Is that right?

0:09:19 > 0:09:22They've called me a few names!

0:09:22 > 0:09:23And look at this, Chris.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26It goes on and on and on.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29All sorts of goodies.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32- The boxes themselves have got to be worth some value, as well. - Absolutely.

0:09:32 > 0:09:37If you look at the exterior of that box, particularly, the exterior's better than the interior.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40Can you see you've got this lovely rosewood exterior to this box

0:09:40 > 0:09:42and all these lovely brass corners and bands?

0:09:42 > 0:09:47But if you can see on the inside here, the leather is all damaged.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50And it's a wee bit difficult to get a good price

0:09:50 > 0:09:53for these sorts of boxes now, simply because they do need a repair.

0:09:53 > 0:09:58Possibly somebody might take the whole innards out and just still use the outer casing.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01So these are still very nice. So that's about 1860 in date.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04My ballpark is around the £100 mark.

0:10:04 > 0:10:09So we're looking at £80 to £120, that sort of figure, for this little collection here.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12- But you never know, there could be a surprise in there.- I hope so.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15I really do hope that somebody's going to pluck out something from this.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17But I have had a jolly good look, I promise.

0:10:17 > 0:10:24Fingers crossed the bidders find some hidden gems in those boxes, even if Jonty didn't spot any.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28And as I carry on the search in the living room, I spot this 1920s carriage clock

0:10:28 > 0:10:32which tops up our fund by another £30 to £50.

0:10:32 > 0:10:36Meanwhile, Jonty and Angela are tackling one of the bedrooms.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38Angela?

0:10:38 > 0:10:41I've got a little collection here. Come and have a look at these.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45We've got four little cases. Have you ever seen these before?

0:10:45 > 0:10:48Yes, I have, I have.

0:10:48 > 0:10:53Didn't know what they were until Dad explained they're old-fashioned matchboxes or something like that.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56That's right. They're vesta cases.

0:10:56 > 0:11:01So in its day, a fashionable piece of almost jewellery, or something to have on you.

0:11:01 > 0:11:05Yes. More often than not... I don't know if we've got one here... Yes, this is really good.

0:11:05 > 0:11:09They've got a little eye there, because this would be on a chain,

0:11:09 > 0:11:13and it would allow you to literally wear it round your neck, if necessary.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15- So we can sell these?- Absolutely.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19So, we've got four in all, two here and two with us.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21Put those in as one lot. Presumably they're all silver.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24Yes, they're all solid silver. I've checked them.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27- £30 to £50.- Right.- OK?- OK.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30- Jolly good. Excellent!- A bit more. - Leave those there. More to find.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33More to find. Let's go.

0:11:33 > 0:11:38Well done, Mr Hearnden. That's another step towards our £500 for John's new-car fund.

0:11:38 > 0:11:43And I've got another item to add to our kitty when I find this Meerschaum pipe.

0:11:43 > 0:11:48It gets packed off to auction with a £20 to £25 price tag.

0:11:48 > 0:11:53John unearths these miniature boxes, including a gilded vinaigrette and papier-mache pillbox.

0:11:53 > 0:11:58Jonty values the collection at £100 to £150.

0:11:58 > 0:12:05The sun's almost set on our day's rummage here in Surrey, but not before Angela spots one final lot.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08That's interesting. What have you got there, Angela?

0:12:08 > 0:12:12- I've just pulled it from the side of the cupboard, tucked away. - Isn't that pretty?

0:12:12 > 0:12:18Now, we're looking at a watercolour here, and we've got a signature down at the bottom. It says is A Hulk.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22That is Abraham Hulk, and he was very well known around the 1880s...

0:12:22 > 0:12:25- Right.- ..because he actually exhibited at the Royal Academy.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28Oh! So that's quite an interesting piece, then.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31Yeah. Yeah, so this is not done by an amateur hand at all.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34Now, the problem you get with watercolours is that

0:12:34 > 0:12:39the pigment itself starts to fade if you expose it to too much light.

0:12:39 > 0:12:44- And if you look at that, you have a sense that we're looking at a faded picture.- Yes. Yes.

0:12:44 > 0:12:49Can you see how the blues in the water have gone more sort of...?

0:12:49 > 0:12:52The definition is lost quite a lot.

0:12:52 > 0:12:54So we're looking at £30, £50, that sort of ballpark.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56- OK.- All right?- Righty-ho.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59- Not a lot for an artist from the Royal Academy.- No, not really.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02- But it's is all down to the fact that the picture is faded.- Right.

0:13:02 > 0:13:06If the colours were stronger, then yes, a lot more money.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09So it's a picture definitely worth putting into the auction sale.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12Is it a picture that your father would be happy to sell?

0:13:12 > 0:13:15Why don't you ask him? He's here!

0:13:15 > 0:13:19- Hello!- Chris, this is an amazing picture, value £30 to £50.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22Oh, now, he's been harsh all day, hasn't he?

0:13:22 > 0:13:26He has. I think he came here, "I don't like the look of this place."

0:13:27 > 0:13:29He's harsh but fair, aren't you, Jonty?

0:13:29 > 0:13:33Well, I would like to be everybody's friend in the auction room.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35I mean, that's the way it's all meant to be.

0:13:35 > 0:13:37We might get a pleasant surprise. Now, that's it.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40We've had a good rummage around. We've got all the items in.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44You wanted to raise £500 towards a new car.

0:13:44 > 0:13:48Well, if we take these items to auction and if it all goes well,

0:13:48 > 0:13:54we reckon we can come up with a grand total of £670.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57- Really? As much as that? - Well, I think it's quite good.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00And that's with Jonty being usually harsh.

0:14:00 > 0:14:01I think he's being very harsh.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04Well, it could be even more than that. Are you happy with that?

0:14:04 > 0:14:07I just want to find out which car it is now.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09THEY LAUGH

0:14:09 > 0:14:14John's home really did prove to be a treasure trove today,

0:14:14 > 0:14:18and we're all impressed with the selection of items that'll be winging their way to auction.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21We've got the wonderful collection of pocket watches,

0:14:21 > 0:14:25which Jonty hopes could bag us a very tidy £150 to £200,

0:14:25 > 0:14:28the set of continental porcelain figurines,

0:14:28 > 0:14:30which Jonty valued at £100 to £200...

0:14:30 > 0:14:33..and who could forget John's collection of writing boxes

0:14:33 > 0:14:35and all their contents?

0:14:35 > 0:14:38We're hoping the bidders spot some hidden treasure inside

0:14:38 > 0:14:43and might pay even more than Jonty's £80 to £100 valuation.

0:14:45 > 0:14:52Still to come on Cash In The Attic, some of our lots don't bank us as many pounds as expected.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56That was cheap! That was cheap.

0:14:56 > 0:15:02- And when things take a turn for the better, our family keep their excitement under control.- Very good.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05He doesn't change expression, does he?

0:15:05 > 0:15:09But will they have good reason to smile when the final hammer falls?

0:15:13 > 0:15:17Now, a few weeks ago, we met John Manton and his daughter Angela in Surrey.

0:15:17 > 0:15:22Now, John has been a huge hoarder for years, so we had plenty of stuff

0:15:22 > 0:15:27to uncover and bring here to the auctioneers Jacobs & Hunt in Hampshire.

0:15:27 > 0:15:32Now, John wants to raise around £500 to put towards a brand-new car,

0:15:32 > 0:15:37so let's hope we've got some big hitters up there as our items go under the hammer.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40It's a sunny day and there are plenty of bidders arriving for the sale.

0:15:40 > 0:15:44It takes an early bird, though, to beat our Jonty,

0:15:44 > 0:15:48and he's already poring over the items on display on the saleroom.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53- Ah, Jonty. Are you checking out what's on offer today? - I certainly am.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56I know something for sure - we've got plenty on offer from John and Angela,

0:15:56 > 0:16:00- because John was a magpie, wasn't he? - Amazing. What an amazing collection.

0:16:00 > 0:16:04- We've got so much. We've got those boxes. What's your favourite? - It's got to be the pocket watches,

0:16:04 > 0:16:09- and I hope we get the full price for them, because I love those. Shall we go and meet them?- Yes.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11- The auction's under way, isn't it? Come on.- Go on.

0:16:11 > 0:16:16As the sale's already started, we do need to find our father-and-daughter duo pretty quickly.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19Luckily, it's not long before we spot them,

0:16:19 > 0:16:23giving one of John's much-loved collections a final farewell.

0:16:23 > 0:16:27- Hello!- Hello! Hi. - Hello, Jonty. Hello, Chris.

0:16:27 > 0:16:28Are there tears in the eyes?

0:16:28 > 0:16:32- You arrived.- Yes. Are there tears in the eyes that you're having to say goodbye to this?

0:16:32 > 0:16:34Yes and no, really, but no.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36- Good. - I was collecting them for years.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39I hung on to them and hung on to them, done nothing with them.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41Have you kept anything at all?

0:16:41 > 0:16:44- Yes, I've kept back six miniature clocks.- Oh, have you? OK.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47- Are those the ones I put £40 to £60 on?- I decided to keep those, yeah.

0:16:47 > 0:16:51- We want £500 towards the brum-brum...- At least.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54..the motorcar. "At least." See, she's already said "at least".

0:16:54 > 0:16:57- Don't give an inch! - OK. Let's get going. Come on.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59- Come on, then.- OK.

0:16:59 > 0:17:04If you're planning on buying or selling at auction, remember that charges such as commission

0:17:04 > 0:17:09will be added onto your bill, so check the details with your local saleroom to avoid any surprises.

0:17:09 > 0:17:15Well, the lots are selling thick and fast, so we find a spot to watch the action unfold.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17Before long, our first item goes under the hammer,

0:17:17 > 0:17:20although not literally, thank goodness,

0:17:20 > 0:17:23as this collection is definitely breakable.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27OK, we've got a group of nine porcelain figures. What's this one, Jonty?

0:17:27 > 0:17:30Those were all the figures dotted around the drawing room.

0:17:30 > 0:17:35They're very good quality, but the problem with them is that the subject matter

0:17:35 > 0:17:38is a wee bit old-fashioned at the moment.

0:17:38 > 0:17:42So I'm not sure where the market's going to fall, where the hammer's going to fall.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45With me at £60. 65.

0:17:45 > 0:17:4770. 75.

0:17:47 > 0:17:5080. 85. 90. 95.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53100. And 10.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55120. 130.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57Front row at 130.

0:17:57 > 0:18:01We're selling at 130. All done?

0:18:03 > 0:18:07- Brilliant!- Yeah, very pleased with that.- That's not too bad.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10That's the way we like to start our day -

0:18:10 > 0:18:13selling for £30 over Jonty's low-end estimate.

0:18:13 > 0:18:17The figurines give us our first step towards John's new car.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19We have similarly high hopes

0:18:19 > 0:18:21for this 19th-century river scene

0:18:21 > 0:18:25painted by the rather incredible artist Abraham Hulk.

0:18:25 > 0:18:26£30 for it?

0:18:26 > 0:18:2920 I'm bid. here at 20. 2 anywhere?

0:18:29 > 0:18:3122. 25. 28.

0:18:31 > 0:18:33At 30.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36£30. 32.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38At the front now, at 32.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40Selling at 32. All done?

0:18:42 > 0:18:45I really thought that would go for more.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47We've got it away, though.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49We got it away.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51- Absolutely right. - What do you reckon?

0:18:51 > 0:18:53You win some, you lose some.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56Well, John might have been hoping for a bit more,

0:18:56 > 0:18:59but that's another sale just above Jonty's low estimate,

0:18:59 > 0:19:00so it's not too bad.

0:19:00 > 0:19:04We're hoping the saleroom, though, will shift up a gear as the day goes on.

0:19:04 > 0:19:07Maybe our next lot will get the bidders to dig even deeper.

0:19:07 > 0:19:12It's the silver tankard, which Jonty valued at £30 to £50.

0:19:12 > 0:19:1530 I'm bid here. At 30. 32. 35.

0:19:15 > 0:19:1738. 40.

0:19:17 > 0:19:2042. 45. 48. 50.

0:19:20 > 0:19:2455. 60. 65.

0:19:24 > 0:19:26In the centre at 65.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29Selling at 65. All done.

0:19:30 > 0:19:34- Very good.- That was worth cleaning!

0:19:34 > 0:19:37£30 to £50 estimate, reached £65.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40Well, I don't know if it was the polish that did it,

0:19:40 > 0:19:41but that's a fantastic result

0:19:41 > 0:19:44and our first lot to exceed Jonty's highest estimate.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48Hopefully, the bidders will take a shine to John's collection

0:19:48 > 0:19:51of vesta cases as well.

0:19:51 > 0:19:55- Are these vesta cases still fashionable?- Yes, of course they are. Of course.

0:19:55 > 0:19:59There's nothing extraordinary about our collection.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01They're quite plain as far as vesta cases are concerned.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04But the detail is still exquisite. Someone's going to love them.

0:20:04 > 0:20:08I've put £30 to £50, and they should sell.

0:20:08 > 0:20:10- Hopefully.- Hopefully.

0:20:10 > 0:20:16Showing there. £30 start me for them. 30 I'm bid. Here at 30. 32. 35. 38.

0:20:16 > 0:20:1840.

0:20:18 > 0:20:2042. 45. 48. 50.

0:20:20 > 0:20:2355. 60.

0:20:23 > 0:20:2665. 70. 75.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29In the centre now at 75.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32All done at 75?

0:20:32 > 0:20:34- Perfect.- That was good.

0:20:34 > 0:20:36Perfect.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41Well, John seems pleased with that result,

0:20:41 > 0:20:44giving us another great addition into the new-car kitty.

0:20:44 > 0:20:48We're making solid progress towards our £500 target.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51It's our most highly valued lot of the day up next,

0:20:51 > 0:20:53and I, for one, am a big fan.

0:20:53 > 0:20:59There is a large collection there, including some gold-cased gentlemen's wristwatches.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01Start me at £100 for them.

0:21:01 > 0:21:03100 anywhere? I'm bid £80.

0:21:03 > 0:21:07Here at 80. 5 anywhere? 85. 90.

0:21:07 > 0:21:1595. 100. And 10. 120. 130. 140. 150.

0:21:15 > 0:21:19Selling at 150. Back of the room at 150. All done?

0:21:22 > 0:21:25- Disappointing.- That was cheap.

0:21:25 > 0:21:29We'd all hoped that the bidders might dig even deeper on that lot,

0:21:29 > 0:21:35but with another £150 in the kitty, it's a big step towards our target, so we need to focus on that, really.

0:21:35 > 0:21:41We're almost halfway through the sale already, but not before John's collection of miniature boxes

0:21:41 > 0:21:42takes centre stage.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45Are we all done at 110?

0:21:45 > 0:21:49That's gone for £10 over Jonty's lowest estimate.

0:21:49 > 0:21:53That's another of John's collections winging its way to a new home.

0:21:53 > 0:21:59The first half of the sale has flown by, and we're making cracking progress towards the new-car fund.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02Our next lot is the Meerschaum pipe,

0:22:02 > 0:22:07which Jonty valued at a very affordable £20 to £25.

0:22:07 > 0:22:11The front row at 35. All done?

0:22:11 > 0:22:15Fantastic. That's £10 over Jonty's top estimate.

0:22:15 > 0:22:19Hopefully, our next lot will have a similarly victorious result.

0:22:19 > 0:22:24It's the collection of medals which we're hoping will make us £20 to £30.

0:22:24 > 0:22:30Start me at £30 for them? 32. 35. 38.

0:22:30 > 0:22:35At 40. £40. Standing at 40. All done?

0:22:35 > 0:22:39Well, doubling Jonty's lowest estimate, it's another good sale.

0:22:39 > 0:22:43I have a feeling our £500 target may be pretty safe by now,

0:22:43 > 0:22:48but with three lots left to sell, we're still keeping everything crossed for good results.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51So, will our next lot provide another timely addition

0:22:51 > 0:22:52to our coffers?

0:22:52 > 0:22:57It's the 1920s carriage clock, which Jonty valued at £30 to £50.

0:22:57 > 0:22:59£50. Back of the room at 50.

0:22:59 > 0:23:02All done?

0:23:02 > 0:23:04Bang on Jonty's highest estimate.

0:23:04 > 0:23:08The bidders just can't get enough of our lots today.

0:23:08 > 0:23:12Well, next to try its luck on the rostrum is John's collection of copper and silver coins.

0:23:12 > 0:23:18We're hoping to turn these into at least £40 worth of cold hard cash.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21Start me at £50 for it?

0:23:21 > 0:23:2450 I'm bid. At 50. 55. 60. 65. 70.

0:23:24 > 0:23:2875. 80. 85. 90.

0:23:28 > 0:23:3195. 100.

0:23:31 > 0:23:34And 10. 120. On my right at 120.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36Selling at 120. All done?

0:23:39 > 0:23:41Wow! How about that?

0:23:41 > 0:23:44120 quid!

0:23:44 > 0:23:49It's certainly fantastic to see John's collections coming up trumps for him today.

0:23:49 > 0:23:54After that sale, I have a feeling he's going to be able to buy himself a new set of wheels to be proud of.

0:23:54 > 0:24:00But we need to get our feet back on the ground, as our last lot of the day is to go under the hammer.

0:24:00 > 0:24:0370. 75. 80.

0:24:03 > 0:24:0585. 90.

0:24:05 > 0:24:0995. 100.

0:24:09 > 0:24:14110. 120. 130.

0:24:14 > 0:24:20140. 150.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22160.

0:24:22 > 0:24:24160. Standing...170.

0:24:24 > 0:24:31Different place. At 170. 180. 190.

0:24:31 > 0:24:33In the centre now at 190.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36Are we all done at 190?

0:24:36 > 0:24:40- Brilliant.- Well done. - That was very good.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43- Very good.- He doesn't change expression, does he?

0:24:43 > 0:24:46Well done, Jonty.

0:24:47 > 0:24:53Well, they really did prove to be treasure chests for us, selling for £70 over Jonty's highest estimate.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56It was certainly a grand finale to a wonderful day at auction,

0:24:56 > 0:25:00and with all our lots sold, it's time to add up the pounds.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03It's the moment of truth.

0:25:03 > 0:25:08You wanted £500, at least £500, towards the car.

0:25:08 > 0:25:13I'm really glad Jonty remembered that "at least".

0:25:13 > 0:25:16So is it a Reliant or a Roller?

0:25:16 > 0:25:20Well, I think more like a Roller,

0:25:20 > 0:25:27because the grand total of our rummaging and the auction is £997.

0:25:27 > 0:25:31- I can't believe that. - That's not bad, is it? - I'd never have guessed that.

0:25:31 > 0:25:35And guess what, Jonty and I will come up with £3 and add it up to £1,000. How about that?

0:25:35 > 0:25:38I always said you two were good eggs.

0:25:44 > 0:25:49Well, a couple of weeks after nearly doubling their target at auction,

0:25:49 > 0:25:54John and daughter Angela can finally hit the road for a spot of car shopping.

0:25:54 > 0:25:55The auction went very well, really.

0:25:55 > 0:25:59- Good fun. - It raised more than expected.

0:25:59 > 0:26:02Well, we've got two satisfied customers so far,

0:26:02 > 0:26:05and it looks like they've got their eye on the new car already.

0:26:05 > 0:26:10The best thing is that you test-drive one first before we go further. Don't you?

0:26:12 > 0:26:18John wastes no time settling into the driving seat and heads off for a quick spin around the block.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20Yeah, I really like this.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23I think this would be ideal for you.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26Yeah, it feels nice, I must say, yeah.

0:26:26 > 0:26:30And as they head back to the showroom, it seems the decision is made.

0:26:30 > 0:26:34The auction money will go towards it, which will help a great deal.

0:26:34 > 0:26:38So that was well done, that auction, for getting that money.

0:26:42 > 0:26:46What a result, and good luck to John as he takes to the road in style.

0:26:46 > 0:26:50Now, if you want to raise money and you think you've got some hidden treasures in your home,

0:26:50 > 0:26:56then why don't you contact us? All the details are online at...

0:26:56 > 0:27:00Good luck with that, and we'll see you next time on Cash In The Attic.
