0:00:49 > 0:00:51And we downsize with some Royal Doulton Toby jugs.

0:00:51 > 0:00:55Unless my eyes deceive me, I have to say that what I'm looking at here

0:00:55 > 0:00:58has to be the smallest Toby jug I've ever, ever seen!

0:00:58 > 0:01:00I have to agree with you, he certainly is!

0:01:00 > 0:01:05But will the bidders have a healthy appetite for our collectables come auction day?

0:01:05 > 0:01:07£420. 450, new man.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10- 450!- 500!

0:01:10 > 0:01:13Find out as the hammer falls.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18Today I'm in the Yorkshire Dales at the village of Colburn

0:01:18 > 0:01:20and I'm about to meet a man

0:01:20 > 0:01:22who has a talent for building,

0:01:22 > 0:01:26a passion for his local football team, and a really big heart.

0:01:26 > 0:01:3080-year-old football fanatic Jack Elliott

0:01:30 > 0:01:33began an apprenticeship in carpentry when he was just 14

0:01:33 > 0:01:38and over the years he added building, architecture and teaching to his list of qualifications.

0:01:38 > 0:01:43He met the love of his life, Joyce, when he was 17,

0:01:43 > 0:01:47they enjoyed the next 60 years together, and have four children.

0:01:47 > 0:01:52In 1984 Jack put all his handiwork skills to the test

0:01:52 > 0:01:56when he single-handedly built their dream home in North Yorkshire.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58He even landscaped the garden himself.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01Sadly, Joyce passed away three years ago

0:02:01 > 0:02:04and Jack has decided that the time has come for a bit of a clear out.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07His daughters Ruth and Lynne are in to help,

0:02:07 > 0:02:09as is the Cash In The Attic team.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Jack and your two daughters, Lynne and Ruth,

0:02:13 > 0:02:16are you thinking of going fishing?

0:02:16 > 0:02:20- We could do that here!- You made this pond, didn't you, Jack?

0:02:20 > 0:02:23- Yeah.- And behind you, the house that Jack built.

0:02:23 > 0:02:24It is indeed.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26You're something of a master craftsman, I'm told.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29Some people think so.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Now, why did you call in Cash In The Attic, Jack?

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Because I thought it was a good idea to put something back

0:02:34 > 0:02:38into all the different groups that brought my wife and I happiness.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41- And how much do you think that's going to take?- About £800.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45- So you're something of a collector then, Jack?- Well, I have been.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48- Ah, yes, I think...- I would say so! - I would say so, yeah!

0:02:48 > 0:02:50A lot of dusting to do.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52Well, it sounds as if you've got a house full of stuff in there,

0:02:52 > 0:02:56and I tell you who else is there at the moment, I didn't just come myself,

0:02:56 > 0:03:00I brought Jonty Hearnden with me, who knows a thing or two about collectables.

0:03:00 > 0:03:05- So, shall we go into the house and find him and see what he's come across?- Definitely.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08Now, his daughters did say there are plenty of items in the house

0:03:08 > 0:03:12that need dusting, and they're not wrong!

0:03:12 > 0:03:14Every shelf is crammed full of them.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17Now, this is good news for us and I know that our expert

0:03:17 > 0:03:20is going to be delighted to see such a wealth of goodies.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22- There you go. Hi, Jonty!- Hi.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24- Look at this.- Flipping 'eck, Jack!

0:03:24 > 0:03:27That's a bit big for your cornflakes in the morning!

0:03:27 > 0:03:29It is.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33- Whatever made you buy that?- Well, I thought my wife would like it

0:03:33 > 0:03:36and I bought it specially for a special present for her.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39Did you? Why did you think she might like it?

0:03:39 > 0:03:42Because she's actually steeped in history and I'd already bought

0:03:42 > 0:03:44Toby jugs with King Henry and his six wives

0:03:44 > 0:03:47and I thought this would match that quite nicely.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50You're absolutely right. It's absolutely stunning,

0:03:50 > 0:03:55but the great thing about this punchbowl, is the fact that it's

0:03:55 > 0:03:59a limited edition bowl and if we look at the information on the underside,

0:03:59 > 0:04:01because all the information is here,

0:04:01 > 0:04:05is that this bowl is one of 250, and this is number 18,

0:04:05 > 0:04:09but the great news is that this bowl was made by Carlton Ware,

0:04:09 > 0:04:13and Carlton Ware are highly desirable, very collectable,

0:04:13 > 0:04:15so that's incredibly good news for us.

0:04:15 > 0:04:19The most important thing to really appreciate about this

0:04:19 > 0:04:20is that all the decoration,

0:04:20 > 0:04:24all the coloured decoration on this bowl would all be hand done,

0:04:24 > 0:04:25so there's an awful lot of detail.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28I mean, just look at the great man himself.

0:04:28 > 0:04:29Look at all the detailing there.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32You bought this at auction, didn't you, Jack? How much did you pay?

0:04:32 > 0:04:37I paid £500 and I thought that it was worth every penny

0:04:37 > 0:04:39because my wife would really adore it.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41It's such a lovely thing that you've said that,

0:04:41 > 0:04:44but at auction I would say something like £300 to £400.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47Let's go and see what we can add to it to take to auction.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49Come on, Jack. Follow me.

0:04:49 > 0:04:54Ruth has started her search in the kitchen and she digs out a really pretty porcelain bowl

0:04:54 > 0:04:57that she remembers once belonging to Jack's Aunt Nellie.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00It was made in France by Sampson of Paris

0:05:00 > 0:05:04and is in the Chinese famille rose style.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08Jonty thinks the bidders will be happy to pay upwards of £60

0:05:08 > 0:05:10for this quite charming piece.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12- Ah, there you are, Lynne.- Oh, hello.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14An amazing collection we've got here.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18- It is, yeah.- So how was this collection accumulated?

0:05:18 > 0:05:23My mum took a liking to Toby jugs quite a long, long time ago

0:05:23 > 0:05:26and any time they saw a Toby jug my dad would buy it for her.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29- Some people get diamond and jewels... - My mum got Toby jugs, yeah!

0:05:29 > 0:05:33But I think it's charming. It sounds like your dad all over.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36- It does, yeah. Indeed.- Now, Lynne, unless my eyes deceive me,

0:05:36 > 0:05:38what I'm looking at here has to be

0:05:38 > 0:05:41the smallest Toby jug I've ever, ever seen!

0:05:41 > 0:05:42I think he certainly is!

0:05:42 > 0:05:46To be truthful, my dad would probably like to keep hold of that

0:05:46 > 0:05:48because it is pretty special.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50So, as far as value is concerned

0:05:50 > 0:05:53I think the star items have to be Henry VIII and his six wives.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55- Oh, I think so, I think so.- They...

0:05:55 > 0:05:58You know, somebody will really want those,

0:05:58 > 0:06:01so, be it a collector or a dealer, that's a definite.

0:06:01 > 0:06:02Right.

0:06:02 > 0:06:04But as a collection we're looking

0:06:04 > 0:06:07roughly between £250 and £350.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10- OK.- And hopefully a lot more than that.- That would be good.

0:06:10 > 0:06:14But will the bidders be fighting over those Toby jugs at auction?

0:06:14 > 0:06:18We've got a really determined bidder at the back of the room here, Jack.

0:06:18 > 0:06:2090. Five. 100.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22Only time will tell.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25Jack continues our rummage in the bedroom.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27He pulls four framed landscapes

0:06:27 > 0:06:31by the artist B Ward from the back of a wardrobe.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35Jonty values them at £50 to £70.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39We're off to a really good start here

0:06:39 > 0:06:41in North Yorkshire in Jack's delightful home.

0:06:41 > 0:06:48and there's lots of evidence around to show just how football mad he is.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52Well, that's a nice thing to have, Jack,

0:06:52 > 0:06:58"Colburn Town Football Club 2008-2009, Club Man, Jack Elliott."

0:06:58 > 0:07:02- That's me!- And another three to go with it.- Certainly, yeah.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05- So this is THE football team, is it? - This is the football team, yes.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09- You are passionate about football, aren't you?- I certainly am.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13- So how did that start?- I've always had an interest in football

0:07:13 > 0:07:17and I think now I've been watching or playing football for 69 years.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21Good heavens above! You met your wife playing footie, didn't you?

0:07:21 > 0:07:25I certainly did. When I was about 18 I was selected to play

0:07:25 > 0:07:27for the Under-18s in the district.

0:07:27 > 0:07:32The first game, and I was playing on the wing when this girl was on

0:07:32 > 0:07:36the touchline, and at the end of the match she asked me

0:07:36 > 0:07:40- if I wanted to go to the cinema. - She dated you, then?

0:07:40 > 0:07:44She certainly did. It carried on for about three years and then we

0:07:44 > 0:07:47got married and we were married for 55 years before I lost her.

0:07:47 > 0:07:52I'm sure Joyce will be with us on the day we go to auction, making sure we get really good prices

0:07:52 > 0:07:55for everything that goes under the hammer.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58- Shall we find Jonty and see what else he's found for us?- Certainly.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Whilst we've been chatting, Jonty continued his search.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03He spots a bookshelf

0:08:03 > 0:08:06filled with a complete set of The Encyclopaedia Britannica.

0:08:06 > 0:08:07They date from the 1880s

0:08:07 > 0:08:12Jonty thinks that this set of 35 volumes, complete with original bookshelf,

0:08:12 > 0:08:16deserves to make upwards of £40 to £60 at auction.

0:08:20 > 0:08:25Jack has dug out an army belt which used to belong to his uncle who fought in the First World War.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29It's not in great condition, but Jonty thinks it's real value

0:08:29 > 0:08:33is in the cap badges that are attached and values them at £30-£40.

0:08:37 > 0:08:38Ah, Ruth?

0:08:38 > 0:08:41- Yeah?- I think I've found some buried treasure.- Oh, wow!

0:08:41 > 0:08:46I remember that. My father bought it about 30 years or more ago.

0:08:46 > 0:08:47- Really?- Yeah.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49It's a fob chain, although at the end of it,

0:08:49 > 0:08:51rather than having a pocket watch...

0:08:51 > 0:08:54- Yeah.- ..we have a beautiful little sovereign holder.

0:08:54 > 0:09:00So, inside we have this lovely gold sovereign, Queen Victoria's head on it.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02And we should have a date on there. 1889. There we go.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04Oh, wow! I didn't realise it was that old.

0:09:04 > 0:09:09But not only have we got a gold-plated sovereign holder,

0:09:09 > 0:09:14- but this is a lovely, solid, nine carat gold fob chain.- Oh, really?

0:09:14 > 0:09:17And every single link is marked to prove that it's gold.

0:09:17 > 0:09:21- Great. Fantastic.- Now, as far as value is concerned I think if we aimed at a low figure

0:09:21 > 0:09:24we're going to get everyone frothing at the mouth

0:09:24 > 0:09:27wanting to buy the gold, so it's a question of pitching it right.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31- I think if we go in as low as £120 to £150...- OK.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35..then we should maybe even get up to £200 quite easily.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37- Oh, OK. That'd be good. - You happy about that?

0:09:37 > 0:09:41Yeah. Might not put a smile on Queen Victoria's face, but it will on mine.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43- Excellent. OK, let's carry on. - Yeah, great.

0:09:43 > 0:09:48Jack's cupboards are filled with items that he no longer uses,

0:09:48 > 0:09:50like this old camera.

0:09:50 > 0:09:55In fact, it's just one of many that he bought when he was planning to take up photography.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58So they're off to auction with a £20 to £30 price tag.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03Ruth has discovered

0:10:03 > 0:10:07a very fine gold pocket watch that was made by Thomas Russell and son.

0:10:07 > 0:10:12There are four more that Jack's collected over the years.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15Jonty's very impressed

0:10:15 > 0:10:19and thinks we'll easily reach his £250 to £350 estimate.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23Jonty, are you busy for a minute? Can you take a look at this?

0:10:23 > 0:10:25- Oh, look at that.- Yeah.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27Now, let's have a look. Can I have a look at this first of all?

0:10:27 > 0:10:30Because this looks very interesting, here.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32This is a German engine.

0:10:32 > 0:10:37And Lima were known for making very unusual train sets.

0:10:37 > 0:10:42If you think about it, how commercial is a German diesel engine in Britain?

0:10:42 > 0:10:46- I don't think very commercial at all. - I mean, we all know about Hornby.

0:10:46 > 0:10:50- Yes.- Because Hornby of course made famous train sets, didn't they?

0:10:50 > 0:10:54Well, where market leaders go of course other people follow

0:10:54 > 0:10:55and Lima was a follower.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57They were in business for about 50 years.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00They started in 1950, but they've now gone out of business.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03So how much do you think we might get at auction?

0:11:03 > 0:11:06We're looking at between £80 and £120, how about that?

0:11:06 > 0:11:08Oh, I think that'll be fine.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10We're on the right tracks, shall we see what else we can find?

0:11:10 > 0:11:12- Let's go.- Thank you.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17We've found such a variety of items to take to auction, but with the day

0:11:17 > 0:11:22drawing to a close there's just time for the one last sweep of the house.

0:11:23 > 0:11:27In the hallway, Lynne spots two prints by the artis, David Bates,

0:11:27 > 0:11:31who had a successful career as a porcelain painter for Royal Worcester.

0:11:31 > 0:11:35Jonty values them at a modest £20-£30.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39- Jonty?- Yes?- We've got these.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42- This lovely little clock.- Yes.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46- And we've got also another couple. - What do you know about the collection?

0:11:46 > 0:11:48Not very much, except for my father bought them at a boot sale.

0:11:48 > 0:11:53- And why did he buy them?- Because of the name, because they're made by Elliott & Son.- Ah!

0:11:53 > 0:11:55So the family name and that's the connection.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59- Is that a family member who made the clocks?- Sadly not.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01Well, what we're looking at here

0:12:01 > 0:12:05is a little clock known as a carriage clock and all carriage clocks have a handle on the top.

0:12:05 > 0:12:10And as the name suggests, carriage clocks were designed to be transported around.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12It was your own personal timepiece.

0:12:12 > 0:12:17They were very fashionable in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19- But these, I think they're a little later...- Oh, OK.

0:12:19 > 0:12:23Because most carriage clocks were a lot larger than this.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25So, if you can see, we've got our three here,

0:12:25 > 0:12:27you can see how similar they are in size,

0:12:27 > 0:12:32but a regular carriage clock, a period carriage clock, would be almost twice the size.

0:12:32 > 0:12:37- You're sure we can sell this collection?- Definitely.- Well, let's tell the others the good news.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40Estimate at auction between £140 and £180.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43I think we've had a pretty good day today.

0:12:43 > 0:12:47- Wonderful.- We've seen some lovely things and if we add that money

0:12:47 > 0:12:50to everything else that Jonty's looked at

0:12:50 > 0:12:53and we can conservatively take his lowest estimate on everything...

0:12:53 > 0:12:59Now, £800 was the amount you wanted to raise for the three organisations within the village.

0:12:59 > 0:13:06Well, I can tell you that we should be able to make £1,360!

0:13:06 > 0:13:08Wow!

0:13:08 > 0:13:10That would be brilliant.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12That's not bad, is it?

0:13:12 > 0:13:15- Not bad? Great!- Great, well done.

0:13:15 > 0:13:19We've had a delightful day in North Yorkshire.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22What an array of items we've amassed for auction.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26There's the magnificent gold and silver pocket watches.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28If the right buyers are in the room

0:13:28 > 0:13:32these could soar through their £250 to £350 estimate.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35The vast collection of character and Toby jugs.

0:13:35 > 0:13:39We're looking for upwards of £250.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44And who could forget the limited edition Carlton Ware punchbowl?

0:13:44 > 0:13:46The workmanship is truly stunning,

0:13:46 > 0:13:50but Jack paid more than Jonty's £300 estimate.

0:13:50 > 0:13:53Will he make his money back on sale day?

0:13:54 > 0:13:57Still to come on Cash In The Attic,

0:13:57 > 0:14:01there's delight as some of our items prove highly popular in the saleroom.

0:14:01 > 0:14:05- That's what you call a belter of a result!- Yeah!

0:14:05 > 0:14:08And concern as to the desirability of others.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10Did... Did you like them, girls?

0:14:10 > 0:14:13I thought they were a bit, like, painting by numbers, personally.

0:14:13 > 0:14:17But if they do well today I might like them more.

0:14:33 > 0:14:38the sad death of his beloved wife, but also of his plan to be able to

0:14:38 > 0:14:43make a donation in her memory to some of the organisations with which she was involved.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45So, we've brought all of his things here today

0:14:45 > 0:14:47to Silverwoods in Clitheroe

0:14:47 > 0:14:52and we should be able to make that £800 target of his - and some, perhaps.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58This popular Lancashire auction house holds a sale of antiques,

0:14:58 > 0:15:03collectables and furniture once a month and it's usually very well attended.

0:15:03 > 0:15:07There seems to be an abundance of fine porcelain here today, which

0:15:07 > 0:15:10means that our fabulous Carlton Ware punchbowl will be in good company.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14I'd love Jack and his daughters to make as much money as they can.

0:15:32 > 0:15:36Well, the saleroom is beginning to fill up, so shall we go and take our

0:15:42 > 0:15:45It looks like we've got a full house today, which is great news.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14but Jack and the girls don't seem too upset.

0:16:14 > 0:16:18I think we'll just bank the money and move on.

0:16:18 > 0:16:22I can only assume that the porcelain buyers were saving their

0:16:22 > 0:16:26money for our next item, and what an item it is!
