0:01:08 > 0:01:10Gosh!

0:01:10 > 0:01:14But will our luck hold out until the final hammer falls?

0:01:14 > 0:01:16Stay tuned to find out.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19Today, I've come to Hampshire and I'm on the edge of the New Forest

0:01:19 > 0:01:22where I'm going to be meeting Nicki and Karen.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24They've called in the Cash In The Attic team

0:01:24 > 0:01:28so they can raise some funds and take to the water.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Meet Nicki Johnson whose passions in life include sailing,

0:01:33 > 0:01:36running and her two beloved dogs.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38She's always lived in Bournemouth

0:01:38 > 0:01:41and now shares a home with lifelong friend Karen Rayner.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45Nicki calls herself a jack of all trades, having had a variety of jobs

0:01:45 > 0:01:50in hotels and nursing homes before becoming a bus driver.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53Hopefully, she's back from her run now as Nicki's called in

0:01:53 > 0:01:58the Cash In The Attic team to help raise money for a nautical adventure.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01So, we've press-ganged expert Jonty Hearnden

0:02:01 > 0:02:04to give us the low-down on any treasure we find.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07A ha! Well, the stairs and the upstairs

0:02:07 > 0:02:10- are beckoning for you, young man. - I'll see you in a minute.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12We'll catch up with you in a bit. Ladies! Oh, hello.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14- Hello!- So you must be Nicki.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17- I am.- And you're her friend Karen, is that right?

0:02:17 > 0:02:19- Yes.- OK, all right.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21- So who called in Cash In The Attic? - I did.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25- I'm so naughty, aren't I?- Right, what made you decide to do that now?

0:02:25 > 0:02:29At the end of the day, I've just got so much stuff over the years

0:02:29 > 0:02:33I've collected, that it's about time that I let some items go.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37Karen, what do you think about Nicki's plans to have a de-clutter?

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Very, very good idea.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42OK. Well, if we're going to find some items of interest

0:02:42 > 0:02:46and sell them, what would you like to spend the money on?

0:02:46 > 0:02:49A sailing holiday or just a short break somewhere.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51And is that for you and Karen?

0:02:51 > 0:02:54- Yes.- Have you any idea how much money you'd like to make?

0:02:54 > 0:02:56About £300.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59All right. If you want to carry on having a look down here, Karen,

0:02:59 > 0:03:04- Jonty's upstairs, so let's go and find him and see if he's got anything to show us.- OK.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07£300 sounds like a realistic target, and at first glance,

0:03:07 > 0:03:10there looks as though there will be plenty to check out.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14The spare bedroom alone could be hiding any number of hidden gems.

0:03:14 > 0:03:19Jonty Hearnden's been involved in the antiques business for nearly 30 years now,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22but despite this, he's still very much a boy at heart.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25- Ah, Jonty!- Hello.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Have you found something already?

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Well, I've found this wonderful collection

0:03:29 > 0:03:32of mint-condition boxed toys.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34Where did you get these from?

0:03:34 > 0:03:37Ringwood Market. I was a bit of a bidder in my time,

0:03:37 > 0:03:40and some of them come from an antique shop.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42Why did you buy them?

0:03:42 > 0:03:46Well, I thought they'd make some money a bit later on in life,

0:03:46 > 0:03:49so I collected them for my son as well.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52- So has he played with them? - No, I just bought them,

0:03:52 > 0:03:55put them away, and that's where they've been ever since.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58We've got one small collection here. How many in total, do you think?

0:03:58 > 0:04:01Probably about 40. It might be slightly more.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03- Really?- Yeah. - That's very good news indeed.

0:04:03 > 0:04:08So, the models that we're looking at here, these were produced by Matchbox

0:04:08 > 0:04:12originally in the 1970s, that's their Yesteryear range, and the reason

0:04:12 > 0:04:15why they produced these was for the collecting market,

0:04:15 > 0:04:18not necessarily for them to be played with.

0:04:18 > 0:04:23There are many growth areas within the business of collecting, and toys is one of them.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27Definitely worth selling. You've got a great collection.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29I have a hunch that we're looking

0:04:29 > 0:04:32- between £100 and £150 there. - Oh, that's lovely.- Excellent!

0:04:32 > 0:04:37That can go off to auction. That will help towards our target figure, £100 to £150.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39Let's see what else we can find. Come on.

0:04:39 > 0:04:43Well, that's a terrific start to our day here in the New Forest,

0:04:43 > 0:04:47and potentially a third of our target in one hit.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50Nicki's search continues in the kitchen

0:04:50 > 0:04:54and in a dresser, she finds a rather neglected cream jug and wash basin.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57It was produced in the early 20th century

0:04:57 > 0:04:58and belonged to Karen's great aunt.

0:04:58 > 0:05:03Sadly, it has some damage and that rim's in need of a clean,

0:05:03 > 0:05:05so Jonty values it at just £10 to £20.

0:05:08 > 0:05:13- Jonty, look, I've got this ukulele. - Oh, isn't that lovely?

0:05:13 > 0:05:16- Can I take it out of the box? - Yes.- It's in very good condition.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18- Do you play?- No.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20- So where's this from?- A great uncle.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22Oh, yes? Did he play it?

0:05:22 > 0:05:24Yes, he did, and the guitar.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27Now, ukuleles originally came from Hawaii.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31It was a 19th-century version of a guitar, a small guitar.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33If you look closely on the top here,

0:05:33 > 0:05:37can you see that it says "CJ Martin & Co. Est. 1833"?

0:05:37 > 0:05:40There should be something on the reverse which tells us...

0:05:40 > 0:05:43- Yes, there you go, made in the USA. - Oh, right.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47It's an American instrument, and it's a company that's still going strong.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50Because it is in such good order, we're going to get

0:05:50 > 0:05:53between £100 and £150 for this at auction.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55- Really? - Yeah. There's no reason why not.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58On a good day, that's what it should sell for.

0:05:58 > 0:05:59- Happy?- Very.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02- Music to your ears?- Very much so!

0:06:02 > 0:06:05But will it be music to the bidders' ears at auction?

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Hold on, hold on!

0:06:07 > 0:06:10What didn't you tell us about this ukulele?

0:06:10 > 0:06:12'Stay tuned to find out.'

0:06:14 > 0:06:17As we continue to search through Nicki and Karen's Hampshire home,

0:06:17 > 0:06:21it becomes clear just how much these two great friends

0:06:21 > 0:06:24have collected in the 20 years they've lived together.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26From the back of a packed display cabinet,

0:06:26 > 0:06:30I spot this lovely silver pincushion that's in the shape of a heart.

0:06:30 > 0:06:35Pincushions became popular in the 19th century and are avidly

0:06:35 > 0:06:38collected today, especially when they're novel designs like this one.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40Sadly, it does have some damage

0:06:40 > 0:06:44and as a result, Jonty gives it a rather mean £10 to £20 estimate.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47Not to worry, though, as I may have just found something else

0:06:47 > 0:06:51that could lead us to more fortune come auction day.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55- Nicki, are you there? It's a map of the local area, but...- Oh, wow!

0:06:55 > 0:06:59- It's 1881!- How extraordinary! How old!- So where's this from?

0:06:59 > 0:07:03There's a whole collection here, but this looks to be the oldest.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06- I think it's one of the many heirlooms.- Right, OK.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09Is this an Ordnance Survey? Let's have a look at the front.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11Yeah, isn't that wonderful?

0:07:11 > 0:07:16So that's very good news, because Ordnance Surveys historically were the most accurate,

0:07:16 > 0:07:21they were the ones that everyone really aspired to own and collect.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23We've got all these other maps here, as well.

0:07:23 > 0:07:28- There's so many and they're all Ordnance Survey maps, are they? - I think so.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Now, Ordnance Survey, or the survey of this nation,

0:07:31 > 0:07:35started in the late 18th century when the army generals

0:07:35 > 0:07:39really wanted to know the topography of our own land

0:07:39 > 0:07:43for defensive purposes, so they had it surveyed.

0:07:43 > 0:07:44OK. What's the value, then?

0:07:44 > 0:07:48Well, sadly, they're not really worth a great deal of money.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51The price, we're looking at £15 to £20.

0:07:51 > 0:07:52I think that's ample.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55- Yeah?- Yes, I do. - So you're happy to let them go?

0:07:55 > 0:07:58- I'm happy to let them go. - It is really interesting.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01It's a shame it's only sort of £15 to £20, but there you go,

0:08:01 > 0:08:05that's the way things are. Let's see if we can find something of more value.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08So, not quite the golden treasure maps we'd hoped for,

0:08:08 > 0:08:15but on the plus side, we've already managed to raise £235 for that sailing holiday.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19Karen's working hard and finds two boxes of geometry instruments

0:08:19 > 0:08:21and a pair of opera glasses.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Jonty thinks these will make an interesting dealer's lot,

0:08:24 > 0:08:28which could add another £15 to £25 to the fund.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31In the lounge, Jonty has found a set

0:08:31 > 0:08:33of Myth & Magic figurines by Tudor Mint.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35They were produced in the 1990s

0:08:35 > 0:08:39and come complete with boxes and collectors' certificates.

0:08:39 > 0:08:43Jonty's confident they could fetch £70 to £100 at auction.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47Well, we've had a highly productive day so far here in Hampshire,

0:08:47 > 0:08:52so time, I think, to learn more about Nicki's passion for the high seas.

0:08:52 > 0:08:56Tell me a little bit about how you got involved in the sailing, then.

0:08:56 > 0:09:01Well, my son used to belong to the Sea Scouts, and I was a helper,

0:09:01 > 0:09:03so I took some qualifications for that,

0:09:03 > 0:09:07and after that, I loved it so much I decided to continue in that field.

0:09:07 > 0:09:11- And how often do you sail? - About twice a week.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13Are there any trips you haven't done that you'd like to do?

0:09:13 > 0:09:16I'd like to go round the Caribbean. It would be wonderful.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20- When was the last time you went to auction?- About a year ago.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23- Have you weaned yourself off them?- I'm trying to.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26So we could have a bit of trouble when we go to the auction -

0:09:26 > 0:09:29- we might come back with more than we go with!- Yes, definitely!

0:09:29 > 0:09:32Presumably we may have to hold your hands down.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34Yes, I think you ought to tie them down, really!

0:09:34 > 0:09:37All right, well, I'll go and tell Jonty that. Come on.

0:09:39 > 0:09:43I'm not sure we'll be able to fund Nicki's dream cruise around the Caribbean,

0:09:43 > 0:09:47but hopefully, our hard work will pay for a fantastic weekend at sea.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49Jonty's been hard at it upstairs

0:09:49 > 0:09:53and it looks like our antique hunter's efforts have paid off.

0:09:53 > 0:09:54Nicki, are you there?

0:09:54 > 0:09:58I've got a little collection of commemorative plates, is that right?

0:09:58 > 0:10:01- Yes, that's right.- How many have we got here?- Got six.- Six in total?

0:10:01 > 0:10:05So, tell me about this collection. Why's it still in the box?

0:10:05 > 0:10:10Well, I just buy things and put them up in the loft, and that's where they stay.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12Why did you buy them in the first place?

0:10:12 > 0:10:15- As an investment.- How long ago? - 19 years ago.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18We've got a great name. We've got Royal Doulton in association

0:10:18 > 0:10:22with the Franklin Mint, who were the specialists in collecting

0:10:22 > 0:10:24limited editions just like this.

0:10:24 > 0:10:30If you look at the work on this set, it's really very, very good indeed.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33This here is the New York Central, so we've got an American set,

0:10:33 > 0:10:35but we've also got the Flying Scotsman,

0:10:35 > 0:10:38so it's obviously looking at great trains from the world,

0:10:38 > 0:10:41but the problem that a lot of people have had over the past

0:10:41 > 0:10:45is that they've bought sets similar to this for investment

0:10:45 > 0:10:47and the price has not necessarily risen.

0:10:47 > 0:10:51If anything, it's probably fallen, but that's not too much of a worry.

0:10:51 > 0:10:56We CAN sell this set. We won't get the money you probably invested. Do you remember what you paid?

0:10:56 > 0:10:59I think about £23 something a plate.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01- That was a lot of money 19 years ago.- Yes.

0:11:01 > 0:11:05- We're looking at, what, £40 to £60? - That's fine.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07- You happy about that? - I am happy about that.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11That's a good find, but it does mean we've got to carry on searching.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13- This way?- Yeah, this way.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Well, Jonty's estimate for the six plates

0:11:16 > 0:11:20is a lot less than the price Nicki originally paid,

0:11:20 > 0:11:22and it would appear the train plates

0:11:22 > 0:11:25aren't the only limited-edition china Nicki has.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28In the spare room, Jonty has found a set of Wedgwood plates

0:11:28 > 0:11:31carrying the Flower Fairy design.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33Like the Royal Doulton examples, these two are boxed

0:11:33 > 0:11:39and complete with certificates, but again, Jonty thinks £40 to £60

0:11:39 > 0:11:41is all we can expect for this lot.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47As our day here in the south of England draws to a close,

0:11:47 > 0:11:51there's just time for one last find, which has a long family history.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56- It's a telescope! Where's this from? - It belongs to Karen.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59Right, Karen, so tell me the connection, then.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01It belonged to my great uncle.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04- Does it work properly? - It does work properly, yes.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07These are such wonderful instruments to hold. They're very tactile.

0:12:07 > 0:12:11The quality of the craftsmanship to make them is all there to see.

0:12:11 > 0:12:15These were very popular in the 19th century and the 18th century,

0:12:15 > 0:12:18and many gentleman would have had one of these,

0:12:18 > 0:12:21because not only were they interested in the stars,

0:12:21 > 0:12:24but they wanted them for various purposes,

0:12:24 > 0:12:27for military purposes as well, so there were many reasons

0:12:27 > 0:12:30why people needed to have them in their possession,

0:12:30 > 0:12:33but it's nice to see at the top a maker's name - Cary, London.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35That's good news for us.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38So what value do you think it might have, Jonty?

0:12:38 > 0:12:40£30 to £50.

0:12:40 > 0:12:44You wanted to raise £300 so that you can take to the waters for the day

0:12:44 > 0:12:46or maybe have a bit of a break.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49Well, the good news is that the value of everything going to auction

0:12:49 > 0:12:52- comes to £430.- Oh, how brilliant.

0:12:52 > 0:12:57When we get to the auction, no bidding, just selling.

0:12:57 > 0:12:58I'll try, I'll try.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03Well, what a successful day we've had in Hampshire

0:13:03 > 0:13:06with great friends Nicki and Karen,

0:13:06 > 0:13:09and what a variety of items we've unearthed for auction.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12There's the large collection of Matchbox cars.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14Jonty struggled to put them down!

0:13:14 > 0:13:17We're hoping the bidders will pick them up and pay above and beyond

0:13:17 > 0:13:20their £100 to £150 estimate.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23The two sets of limited-edition collector's plates.

0:13:23 > 0:13:27These were once all the rage, will they be again at auction?

0:13:27 > 0:13:31We'll soon find out. We're looking for £40 per set.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35And who could forget Karen's great uncle's ukulele?

0:13:35 > 0:13:36Jonty valued it at £100,

0:13:36 > 0:13:41but will the music lovers be in the room or will it go for a song?

0:13:44 > 0:13:46Still to come on Cash In The Attic -

0:13:46 > 0:13:51there's so much interest in one of our lots, we wonder if we've missed something.

0:13:51 > 0:13:52- 120!- Well done!- 120!

0:13:52 > 0:13:55You hadn't hidden a stash of diamonds in there, had you?

0:13:55 > 0:13:57So, will the girls be setting sail

0:13:57 > 0:14:00for fun on the high seas or heading home for an early bath?

0:14:00 > 0:14:03Find out when the hammer falls.

0:14:07 > 0:14:11Now, it's been a few weeks since we met Nichola and Karen

0:14:11 > 0:14:13at their home in the New Forest.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16Now, remember, they wanted to raise £300 for a sailing holiday.

0:14:16 > 0:14:22We found plenty of items to bring here to Andrew Smith & Son Auctioneers in Hampshire,

0:14:22 > 0:14:25so we're hoping that the bidders, who are already arriving in force,

0:14:25 > 0:14:27are ready to part with their cash.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31This popular saleroom on the outskirts of Winchester

0:14:31 > 0:14:33holds its fine art sales once a month,

0:14:33 > 0:14:35and with just shy of 900 lots on offer,

0:14:35 > 0:14:39we're expecting a full house for today's sale.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42I can't wait to see what the bidders make of the valuations

0:14:42 > 0:14:45on our eclectic mix of items.

0:14:45 > 0:14:47- Ah, good morning.- How are you doing?

0:14:47 > 0:14:52She has got a lot of these. How many altogether, can you remember?

0:14:52 > 0:14:53Far too many to count.

0:14:53 > 0:14:58They're all in their original boxes, which is very, very good news indeed.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01The only thing I'm worried about

0:15:01 > 0:15:03is that here we are in the real country heartland,

0:15:03 > 0:15:06beautiful antiques around us, this fantastic barn.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09Is it the place for modern collectables to really sell?

0:15:09 > 0:15:14Well, the great thing about auctions is we never really know,

0:15:14 > 0:15:17but because they are all in perfect condition,

0:15:17 > 0:15:20I'm sure we have a good chance. Time to create some magic.

0:15:20 > 0:15:21Oh, yes, I like that!

0:15:21 > 0:15:24So Jonty's confident about the day ahead.

0:15:24 > 0:15:29Let's hope there are also plenty of wannabe ukulele players at the auction.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32- Good morning.- Good morning. - How are you doing?

0:15:32 > 0:15:35What does it feel like seeing your items here in the auction house?

0:15:35 > 0:15:37- Fantastic. - You've brought everything?

0:15:37 > 0:15:41I've brought everything. I haven't had second thoughts.

0:15:41 > 0:15:45I saw you having a good look round - have you got your eye on anything?

0:15:45 > 0:15:47- I have, actually. - We're here to sell, not to buy.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49I know, but I just can't help the urge.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52We're going to have to keep her busy, I think.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54I'm going to have to keep my eye on you.

0:15:54 > 0:15:58The auction is under way, so shall we get ready to sell our items?

0:15:58 > 0:16:02- I might go and get myself a number, yet!- No, no, no!- Come on, this way.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04Follow me, follow me.

0:16:04 > 0:16:06I think if we're not careful today,

0:16:06 > 0:16:09Nicki will have spent the holiday money before we've even earned it.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13Now, if like Nicki and Karen, you're thinking of heading to auction

0:16:13 > 0:16:17to raise money for something special, please remember that fees

0:16:17 > 0:16:20such as commission and VAT may be added to your bill,

0:16:20 > 0:16:23so do check the details with your local auction house first

0:16:23 > 0:16:26to avoid any unwelcome surprises.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28Well, the auction's in full flow, as they say,

0:16:28 > 0:16:31but for you, it's your first lot coming up,

0:16:31 > 0:16:34and it's the early 20th century cream ground jug and wash basin.

0:16:34 > 0:16:38- £10 to £20 for that?- That's right, because there was a bit of damage.

0:16:38 > 0:16:42It also needed a bit of a cleaning. Did you manage to do the cleaning?

0:16:42 > 0:16:45- Yes, we did.- Very good. - Let's see if we can sell it.

0:16:45 > 0:16:50£5 I have. 6, can I say? A £5 note. All done at £5.

0:16:50 > 0:16:566 upstairs. 7, is it? £7. 8? 9? At £8, then.

0:16:56 > 0:16:589, can I say? At £8, all done.

0:16:58 > 0:17:00GAVEL BANGS

0:17:00 > 0:17:03£8. We're going to have to start printing some £8 notes at this rate

0:17:03 > 0:17:06- if that's the best we can do! - An interesting one.

0:17:06 > 0:17:09So, despite polishing them up for auction,

0:17:09 > 0:17:13it looks like the bidders were still put off by that damage.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16It's our first contribution to the sailing holiday

0:17:16 > 0:17:18and they will need a fair wind behind them

0:17:18 > 0:17:19on only £8.

0:17:19 > 0:17:22Let's hope we have more luck with our next item.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25Now, these are the Flower Fairy plates, two very good things.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28Lots of followers of Flower Fairies,

0:17:28 > 0:17:30and Wedgewood is a very good name, Jonty.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33Yes. The other plus is they're in perfect condition.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36- What do we want for these? - £40 to £60 is what we're looking for.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39At £20, 22. 24. 26.

0:17:39 > 0:17:4228. £30. And 2.

0:17:42 > 0:17:4435. 38. £40. And 2.

0:17:44 > 0:17:4645. 48.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49£50. And 5. 60.

0:17:49 > 0:17:51Yes? And 5. 70?

0:17:51 > 0:17:55£65, then. Don't listen to her!

0:17:55 > 0:17:58At £65. 70, can I say? 70 upstairs. And 5?

0:17:58 > 0:18:00Another bidder, great!

0:18:00 > 0:18:0280. And 5?

0:18:02 > 0:18:03Oh, excellent!

0:18:03 > 0:18:0780, then, upstairs. 85, is it? At £80 upstairs, all done.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10- £80.- At £80. 85. 90? Yes? And 5.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12£90 upstairs. Are you going on?

0:18:12 > 0:18:16At £90. Last chance at £90, then.

0:18:16 > 0:18:17GAVEL BANGS

0:18:17 > 0:18:20They ended up going for more than I thought.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22Yes, I agree, and lots of interest in the room,

0:18:22 > 0:18:24and we also had an internet bidder as well.

0:18:24 > 0:18:29Well, that's more like it! Selling for £30 over Jonty's top estimate.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34Now it's an item that I discovered, the old Ordnance Survey maps.

0:18:34 > 0:18:39- There are a lot of these. Is this a collection you put together?- No, they belonged to my great uncles.

0:18:39 > 0:18:43- So your great aunts contributed and your great uncle!- Oh, yes.

0:18:43 > 0:18:44So what we want for these, Jonty?

0:18:44 > 0:18:47These are great curios. £15 to £20.

0:18:47 > 0:18:48OK, let's see what we can get, then.

0:18:48 > 0:18:53- Tenner? Oh, got a tenner on the net. £10. 12, is it?- £10!

0:18:53 > 0:18:56£10. 12 anywhere? At £10. Anybody at... 12 now.

0:18:56 > 0:19:0114. 15, then. 15, I have. 18?

0:19:01 > 0:19:04- At £15, then.- That's fine. - On the interweb at £15.

0:19:04 > 0:19:08Anybody else in at £15? All done at £15.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13- When was the last time you used them? - I don't think you ever did!

0:19:13 > 0:19:16Never! There you go, we got £15 for you. All right

0:19:16 > 0:19:21Well, we shouldn't be too disheartened with that, selling for bang on Jonty's lowest estimate.

0:19:21 > 0:19:25And when the heart-shaped silver pincushion sells

0:19:25 > 0:19:28for over twice its highest estimate at £45,

0:19:28 > 0:19:30we begin to feel that we're really on a roll.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35OK, our next lot is the 19th-century brass telescope

0:19:35 > 0:19:38which we found and had a good look through.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40We did find a maker's mark on that.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43Yeah, we found Cary, which is a great mark to have

0:19:43 > 0:19:44on any telescope.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48Stamped by Cary, best of makers. Now, where are you going to start?

0:19:48 > 0:19:52That's a nice talk-up from the auctioneer, saying it's the best of makers.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54Come below that, £100.

0:19:54 > 0:19:58No? 50, then. I have 50. I'll take a fiver.

0:19:58 > 0:19:59Somebody's gone straight in at 50.

0:19:59 > 0:20:0360, do you mean? Anybody else in at £55?

0:20:03 > 0:20:05- GAVEL BANGS Pleased?- Very pleased.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07- Yes?- £55.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10Karen thought we'd do well to get a fiver for the telescope

0:20:10 > 0:20:14and we managed a lot more than that.

0:20:14 > 0:20:19We've been doing well so far, but I'll be interested to see what the bidders make of our next offering.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22This is a bit of a strange lot, Jonty, what's going on here?

0:20:22 > 0:20:27It's a question of putting items together that are going to attract dealers.

0:20:27 > 0:20:31- Right, now, what do we want for this, then?- £15 to £25.- OK.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33At £10, my colleague. 12.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36They're going on now. It's kicking off at £12.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38Come on, come on, come on.

0:20:38 > 0:20:4115 now. 17, can I say? At £15. 17, is it?

0:20:42 > 0:20:45- All done at £15? - It's the lower-end estimate.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51Well, Jonty thought they were worth around £15,

0:20:51 > 0:20:54and that's exactly what someone else was willing to pay.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57It's back to a more conventional auction lot next

0:20:57 > 0:20:59with Nicki's commemorative plates.

0:20:59 > 0:21:03This time it's steam trains of the world by Royal Doulton.

0:21:03 > 0:21:07We did well on our first set of plates, so let's see what happens.

0:21:07 > 0:21:11I put the same estimate as the fairy plates, £40 to £60.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13I have 30. Take two on these.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15At £30. 32?

0:21:15 > 0:21:18- Come on.- 32. 35. 38.

0:21:18 > 0:21:2140. 42.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24There's somebody on the internet again.

0:21:24 > 0:21:2745. 47.

0:21:27 > 0:21:29£50?

0:21:31 > 0:21:3447, then, here. Anybody else in at 47? 50, is it?

0:21:34 > 0:21:37Are you finished at £47, all done?

0:21:37 > 0:21:40- GAVEL BANGS Good news.- £47. Is that OK?

0:21:40 > 0:21:42- Yes, that's OK.- Yeah?

0:21:42 > 0:21:45Well, £47 is over Jonty's lower estimate,

0:21:45 > 0:21:49but there's no disguising Nicki's disappointment with that sale.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52She would have paid a lot more than that when she bought them new.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55I'd really like to think we could put a smile

0:21:55 > 0:21:58back on the girls' faces with the sale of our next lot,

0:21:58 > 0:22:01but I'm slightly concerned that Nicki will have

0:22:01 > 0:22:04once again paid good money for her Tudor Mint figurines.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06Can you remember what you paid for these?

0:22:06 > 0:22:10I should think about £40, something like that, for the big ones.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13OK, because we've got quite a low estimate on these, 70 to 100,

0:22:13 > 0:22:15but it'll be interesting to see,

0:22:15 > 0:22:18because these are quite popular in some quarters.

0:22:18 > 0:22:22Because they're such good quality, and again, you've got the box

0:22:22 > 0:22:25and the certificates, it's really going to help the price.

0:22:25 > 0:22:31Now, I'm going to start you clear, all bids here at £85. 90, can I say?

0:22:31 > 0:22:35£90. 95. 100. And 10.

0:22:35 > 0:22:38120. 130.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40- 140.- We are creating a bit of magic.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42130 with me, then.

0:22:42 > 0:22:45£130. Done at 130?

0:22:45 > 0:22:47GAVEL BANGS

0:22:47 > 0:22:49- £130.- That's good.

0:22:49 > 0:22:52Are you pleased? I know it doesn't equate to what you spent on them.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54Yes, but it's very good.

0:22:54 > 0:22:57I have to say I think that's actually a pretty good result

0:22:57 > 0:23:01for the figurines, as they sell over Jonty's estimate.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04It's more of our modern-day collectables up next,

0:23:04 > 0:23:07but this time in the form of vintage cars and vans.

0:23:07 > 0:23:11Let's hope the magic from our last success rubs off on these too.

0:23:13 > 0:23:18- You bought these at auction? - Yes, I did. Ringwood auction and antique dealer as well.

0:23:18 > 0:23:20What are we expecting for these?

0:23:20 > 0:23:22The estimate - £100 to £150.

0:23:22 > 0:23:25Now, I've got to start you here at 85.

0:23:25 > 0:23:28- 90 somewhere? At 85 with me. - That's more like it.

0:23:28 > 0:23:3190, is it, in the room? At £85.

0:23:31 > 0:23:32Anybody going on?

0:23:34 > 0:23:37No? £85, surely?

0:23:37 > 0:23:39- 90.- Oh, come on.

0:23:39 > 0:23:41At 85, all done.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44- They're unsold.- Unsold.

0:23:44 > 0:23:48How would you feel about that? Would you rather they'd sold for 85 or...

0:23:48 > 0:23:52I don't mind sticking them up in the loft for another few years!

0:23:52 > 0:23:54I knew you were going to say that!

0:23:54 > 0:23:58Well, that is a surprise, and with no bids above £85,

0:23:58 > 0:24:00the cars head back to the New Forest

0:24:00 > 0:24:03with the girls, and that doesn't help our sailing fund.

0:24:03 > 0:24:07Fortunately, there is one item left to sell, and it's by far

0:24:07 > 0:24:09our most unusual lot of the day.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12It's Karen's great uncle's ukulele.

0:24:12 > 0:24:14What do we want for this?

0:24:14 > 0:24:16Well, I put £100 to £150 on it.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18It's a very good, good quality instrument, this.

0:24:18 > 0:24:23Now, clear bids, I'm starting you at 240.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25- £240! - THEY GASP

0:24:25 > 0:24:30260, can I say? 260. 280. 300.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33Good grief! It's not lined in gold, is it?

0:24:35 > 0:24:36360. 380.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38Hold on, hold on.

0:24:38 > 0:24:40What didn't you tell us about this ukulele?

0:24:40 > 0:24:43- 400. And 20.- It's made of gold!

0:24:46 > 0:24:48At £400, then.

0:24:48 > 0:24:49420. 440?

0:24:49 > 0:24:52420, then. On the phone at 420.

0:24:52 > 0:24:56- Anybody else in?- On the phone! - At £420, are you done at 420?

0:24:56 > 0:24:58All done at 420, then.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01- 420!- £420!

0:25:01 > 0:25:05You hadn't hidden a stash of diamonds in there or something, had you?!

0:25:05 > 0:25:07What an amazing result!

0:25:07 > 0:25:10Talk about saving the best till last!

0:25:10 > 0:25:12What a day it's turned out to be,

0:25:12 > 0:25:17so after that fabulous result, how much money have we raised?

0:25:17 > 0:25:19OK, you wanted £300, didn't you?

0:25:19 > 0:25:22- Yes.- And you have actually made £825.

0:25:22 > 0:25:26- Wow!- Wow!- That's good, isn't it? - Congratulations.- That's fantastic.

0:25:26 > 0:25:29What are you going to do with all that money?

0:25:29 > 0:25:32I don't know. There's a few items here that I would really like!

0:25:32 > 0:25:35Are you going to carry on buying things in boxes

0:25:35 > 0:25:38- and putting them in the loft? - Um...I'll try not to.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41Right, I think we can take that as a yes.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50After that roller coaster day at auction, Nicki's headed down

0:25:50 > 0:25:55to her local sailing club and she can't wait to get out onto the water

0:25:55 > 0:25:59in preparation for the girls' up-and-coming sailing holiday,

0:25:59 > 0:26:01and Nicki has devised quite a trip!

0:26:01 > 0:26:05The money I've raised, I've decided to spend it on sailing,

0:26:05 > 0:26:09and I'm going over to Cherbourg and then we're going to go

0:26:09 > 0:26:11to Guernsey and back, just to make it a sailing trip.

0:26:11 > 0:26:14It's my hobby, and I love it.

0:26:14 > 0:26:17I love getting out there in the sea and just relaxing

0:26:17 > 0:26:20and having the engine cut and just let the wind take you.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26Crossing the Channel will be some experience,

0:26:26 > 0:26:29because there's so many boats in the Channel

0:26:29 > 0:26:30and you have to keep a good lookout,

0:26:30 > 0:26:34so it'll be really, really exciting, very exhilarating.
