0:00:02 > 0:00:04Welcome to the programme that likes to rummage round people's properties.

0:00:04 > 0:00:07We're looking for interesting items that can be valued

0:00:07 > 0:00:10and then sold at auction, hopefully raising lots of money along the way.

0:00:10 > 0:00:14One thing I can guarantee is that we'll unearth some interesting stories.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16Lets go and look for Cash In The Attic.

0:00:36 > 0:00:40Coming up on Cash In The Attic, Jonty's low opinion of a set of

0:00:40 > 0:00:42coffee mugs is a bit hard to swallow.

0:00:43 > 0:00:47- Probably paid over the odds for it. - You did.- You mug!

0:00:49 > 0:00:52I find out how best to sample a silver-plated punch bowl...

0:00:52 > 0:00:56- Not straight to your mouth then? - Well, you could do, if no-one was looking.

0:00:56 > 0:01:01And on sale day the bidders send our auctioneer into a spin.

0:01:01 > 0:01:02Not going to sell at £30!

0:01:02 > 0:01:05I'm bid. It's amazing, everybody all at once now.

0:01:05 > 0:01:09Be there when the hammer finally falls.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12Today I'm in Newbury, on my way to meet John and Gail,

0:01:12 > 0:01:16a retired couple who want to treat their three special grandchildren

0:01:16 > 0:01:17to a day out they'll never forget.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22John and Gail Spencer have been married for 43 years and have two

0:01:22 > 0:01:26children, Caroline and Dudley and three grandchildren.

0:01:26 > 0:01:31For many years, our couple ran a hotel in Newbury but they're now retired.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34So when they're not slicing balls along the indoor fairway

0:01:34 > 0:01:37they love spending time with the grandchildren.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40The only trouble is their son's family emigrated to Spain

0:01:40 > 0:01:43so they can't get everyone together as much as they'd like.

0:01:43 > 0:01:47I have a sneaky suspicion that's why we're here.

0:01:47 > 0:01:52- Good morning, Jonty. How are you? - How you doing, Aled?- I'm not bad at all.- Good. Shall we go in?- Yes.

0:01:52 > 0:01:57With a knowledge of antiques and collectables accrued over more than 25 years,

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Jonty wastes no time in getting our search underway.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02Nor do I!

0:02:02 > 0:02:05Hey, John, Gail, good to see you, how are you?

0:02:05 > 0:02:07Oh, hello, Aled, nice to meet you.

0:02:07 > 0:02:08Who've we got here then?

0:02:08 > 0:02:10I'm Caroline, John and Gail's daughter.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12Ah! OK, so whose idea was it to call in the Cash team?

0:02:12 > 0:02:16It was my idea, I'm afraid. Yes, I phoned in originally.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20Mum and Dad have got lots of things at home. They hoard quite a bit.

0:02:20 > 0:02:25We've moved a lot of times from the hotel, and the squash club so yes, I'm hoping they'll have

0:02:25 > 0:02:29- lots of interesting things to sell. - Why do you want to raise the money?

0:02:29 > 0:02:33Well, to take the grandchildren away on a special trip somewhere. Three of them together.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36One from Spain and two from the UK.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38How often to they get to see one another?

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Erm...probably about two or three times a year.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45So if we can combine that with a visit somewhere special, it'll be wonderful.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47That's going to cost quite a lot, isn't it?

0:02:47 > 0:02:51- Oh, if we can get three or four hundred pounds I think that will be very nice.- Yes.

0:02:51 > 0:02:55So, three or four hundred pounds. Do you reckon you've got the valuables?

0:02:55 > 0:02:58- Hmm, hopefully, yes, or something towards it.- One way to find out.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01Jonty's been having a look, so let's find out how he's getting on.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04- We'll follow you.- Come on.- Right.

0:03:04 > 0:03:09John and Gail's four bedroom house has been built on the site of their old hotel.

0:03:09 > 0:03:14There are lots of rooms to explore and I can't wait to start looking around.

0:03:14 > 0:03:20Jonty's had a head start on us and has already found something that needs closer inspection.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Hey, Jonty, how are you getting on?

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Hi. Good. Now I've found this lovely coffee set

0:03:25 > 0:03:28in a beautiful presentation box.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32It's perfect if you've got five mates but if you've got six you're in trouble.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34- What's happened here?- It was missing when I purchased it.

0:03:34 > 0:03:39It's such a pity because we've got a great maker's name here.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42If you see here Walker & Hall, Sheffield.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46They made some of the finest Sheffield plate ever to come out of the grand city.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49Date-wise, we're looking early 1920s.

0:03:49 > 0:03:54In its state as it is, and we can't do anything about it, £40-£60.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57- Mm- mm.- How do you feel?- Well, Fine.

0:03:57 > 0:04:02I think when I purchased it, it was probably about £30-£40 then.

0:04:02 > 0:04:07- Right, OK. Probably paid over the odds for it.- You did!

0:04:07 > 0:04:12- You mug.- Talking of mug or lack of mug.- Or lack of mug, yes.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15And I'm also enjoying the fact that you subliminally found a coffee set.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17- You want a cuppa?- Yes, come on.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19I knew it.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22Well, while we put the kettle on, Caroline is getting

0:04:22 > 0:04:26really stuck into rummaging through her parents' cupboards.

0:04:26 > 0:04:31In the spare room I'm intrigued by something that looks like a large piece of bamboo.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33I finally work out what it is.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36A leather fishing stool which belonged to John's grandfather.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39Jonty gives it a £30-£40 price tag.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44And it appears Caroline's exploration has paid off.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47Guys, I've got something in the box here that might be of interest.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49Oh, you big tease. That's a serious box you got there.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51- A serious box, bit of a... - Wow. A bit of paper?

0:04:51 > 0:04:54- Yes, there is something in here. - Wow. This is amazing.

0:04:54 > 0:04:59- Inside here is a punch bowl with some cups and a ladle.- Isn't that grand?

0:04:59 > 0:05:02- It's quite weighty too. - It is. Yes.- Have you used that?

0:05:02 > 0:05:07We have, many times on family occasions, starting from our engagement.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11We've had the children's when they've been born, birth and celebrations there, so yeah.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Let me just pick up the actual ladle.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17If you see the shape of that ladle, that's a punch ladle

0:05:17 > 0:05:20- because a soup ladle would be obviously slightly different.- OK.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24Again, the whole idea, you've got the fine pouring,

0:05:24 > 0:05:27- sides to it. - Not straight to your mouth then?

0:05:27 > 0:05:29Well, you could do if no-one was looking.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32Can you see those marks on the underside of the ladle there?

0:05:32 > 0:05:38Now they are designed to look like hallmarks because they are very similar but they're not quite.

0:05:38 > 0:05:43- Oh, no!- Those marks indicate that it is plated rather than solid silver.

0:05:43 > 0:05:48- How much do you reckon?- Well... as I said, big price difference if it was solid silver its still going to

0:05:48 > 0:05:53be £40-£60 of anybody's money, simply because it's so decorative.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56The valuations have been fairly modest so far so we

0:05:56 > 0:06:03really need to delve deep into those out-of-the way places where treasures may be lurking.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06Gail wonders if this set of Stuart crystal is valuable.

0:06:06 > 0:06:10She's been collecting it since her wedding in 1966.

0:06:10 > 0:06:15Unfortunately, many pieces have been lost and she's now left with odd numbers of glasses.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18Jonty aims to be realistic about its chances,

0:06:18 > 0:06:21with a valuation of £40-£60.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25So far, going by Jonty's lower estimates, we stand to make £150

0:06:25 > 0:06:32at auction, which is only half of John and Gail's target of £300.

0:06:32 > 0:06:38I think we need to lay down the law here. No slacking until we hit that mark.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42- John, what on earth have we got here?- Yes.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45Cat o' nine tails? And a truncheon?

0:06:45 > 0:06:52- You have to explain.- Well, they came down though my grandfather, whose brother worked in the gaol in York.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55We can have a look at this hand-turned truncheon here.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59It has a very 19th century feel to it.

0:06:59 > 0:07:04Sometimes when I look at antiques I think, I just wish that they could tell a story but looking at

0:07:04 > 0:07:10these two implements I'm very glad that it can't, or they can't.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12Value-wise, it's worth putting in the auction.

0:07:12 > 0:07:18If we put £30-£50 on them that will whip up some enthusiasm in the auction sale room.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20- Very good. - Excellent. Let's carry on.

0:07:20 > 0:07:27They certainly are highly unusual items from a bygone era and could raise great interest on sale day,

0:07:27 > 0:07:31though they clearly need to be kept out of the reach of children

0:07:31 > 0:07:32and grandchildren.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36In the kitchen Caroline spotted this Maling lustre bowl

0:07:36 > 0:07:39with an Oriental pattern. It belonged to her grandmother.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42Items like this are very collectable.

0:07:42 > 0:07:47Jonty reckons it should attract £25-35 at auction.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49So stop me if I'm wrong but I get the impression that

0:07:49 > 0:07:53you're a couple now you've retired really do enjoy life to the full.

0:07:53 > 0:07:58- We try, we try, yes.- But you've had a busy life before retiring, haven't you?

0:07:58 > 0:08:02- Yes, yes, very busy.- Yes, a hotel

0:08:02 > 0:08:07for 13 years. It's a seven day a week job, 24 hours a day.

0:08:07 > 0:08:13And we were front of house most of the time, running our own hotel, so you have to be

0:08:13 > 0:08:14Jack of all trades.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17- We didn't have a holiday for... - Six years.

0:08:17 > 0:08:18Six years, yes.

0:08:18 > 0:08:24- But we made lots and lots of friends and it's a fantastic business if you can enjoy it.- So since retiring...

0:08:24 > 0:08:26what have you been up to?

0:08:26 > 0:08:31Well, we've been gardening, golfing,

0:08:31 > 0:08:34grandchildren and globetrotting.

0:08:34 > 0:08:38Well, I have to say I envy you because it sounds like you have a fabulous life.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40Very lucky.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43We've enjoyed what we've done, now we're enjoying our retirement.

0:08:43 > 0:08:48Well, if you ever need anyone to carry your bags, you know where I am, don't you?

0:08:48 > 0:08:50Meanwhile, Caroline is clearly

0:08:50 > 0:08:54determined to find something of value in her parents' house today.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57She obviously wants to ensure a great family day out.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00Gail gets stuck in too.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03But Jonty reckons they've all missed a treat in the hall.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06It's a small mahogany card table.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08Gail and John bought it in the 1980s for

0:09:08 > 0:09:12the guests at their hotel and it's been kept in great condition.

0:09:12 > 0:09:16Jonty lays down his cards, he reckons £40-£50 at auction.

0:09:16 > 0:09:21Now then, has Gail come up trumps after her turn around the bedroom?

0:09:21 > 0:09:25- Got some jewellery, have we? - Yes, yes. That's quite sweet.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28Ah, that's a lovely dress wrist watch, a ladies wrist watch.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30- It was Grandma's, wasn't it? - Yes.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32It's amazing just how tiny these things are.

0:09:32 > 0:09:33Look at the face on that.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36Seventeen jewels, sterling silver.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38Very pretty.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41- Yes.- What else have we got? - We've got a little ring here.

0:09:41 > 0:09:45- That looks like a very tiny cluster of diamonds there.- Mmm.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49If I look at the band, it's 18-carat gold.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51So that's good news. Have you got anything else to show me?

0:09:51 > 0:09:55OK, we have quite a special little bracelet here of my mother's.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57You might like to have a look at that.

0:09:57 > 0:10:01Isn't that beautiful? These are all agates, but you can see all the different colours.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03The metal is plated

0:10:03 > 0:10:08so if you look at this end of the band, it's silver

0:10:08 > 0:10:13but the actual buckle has lost all of its plated silver

0:10:13 > 0:10:15so you've got the brass at this end.

0:10:15 > 0:10:22So it has worn, you may not like the sound of this, but I think that's £100-£150 at auction.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24Do you? Mmm, yes.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28It's very sentimental, and I think the value, sentimentally,

0:10:28 > 0:10:31is worth more than the actual cash estimate.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33For the ring and the dress watch

0:10:33 > 0:10:37it's worth putting into the auction but they will be small amounts,

0:10:37 > 0:10:39£30-£40.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41- Yes, well, that's fair enough.- Yes?

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Good. Will be interesting to see.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45Yes, fair enough indeed.

0:10:45 > 0:10:50The combined value for these three items is £130- £190,

0:10:50 > 0:10:53and I think Gail will be putting a reserve on that bracelet.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56If she sends it to auction at all.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58I get down to a really good search in the office.

0:10:58 > 0:11:03Maybe there'll be something of value which has slipped in amongst these boxes.

0:11:03 > 0:11:08And out in the garage, Gail and John have found a rather large and intriguing piece.

0:11:08 > 0:11:12It's a hat box and it belonged to John's grandmother, Olive Mary Hill.

0:11:12 > 0:11:18They've had it for years but John's happy to let it go when our expert says £25-£35.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23Back upstairs I find something that could help with the auction fund.

0:11:23 > 0:11:27- Can I have a look? - Of course you can. You were itching to have a look.

0:11:27 > 0:11:33Yes. If you look at the top here there is a printed scene, but it's hand coloured.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36There's a flag on the top there.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38That's the French tricolour. That's where it's from.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40This is French, not English.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44But all that busy decoration means that it's late 19th century.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48So all the mounding we've got here is brass with this lovely glass

0:11:48 > 0:11:53interior and even the scent stopper is in perfect order. Look at that.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56So what is something like that worth, would you say?

0:11:56 > 0:11:58Because it's not silver

0:11:58 > 0:12:03it's not going to be worth the same amount of money, so it's a bit like our punch bowl.

0:12:03 > 0:12:07But it really is very pretty and I think the market loves unusual things.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10But I'm not going to put a high figure on it, I'm going to put £20-£30 on it.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13And that, because if you notice across the top

0:12:13 > 0:12:16it's slightly off-kilter on the top there.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19There's a slight bit of damage there but I just think it's charming.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21Let me work out the maths.

0:12:21 > 0:12:25I didn't go to school, I was singing on albums when I was a child. That's my excuse.

0:12:25 > 0:12:31So hang on, I reckon you're after 300-400 quid, weren't you, for this grand day out?

0:12:31 > 0:12:33Yes.

0:12:33 > 0:12:34We're doing all right. Don't panic.

0:12:34 > 0:12:39- No? Are we on the right side?- £420. That's our lowest estimate.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41So you've done well. More than you expected?

0:12:41 > 0:12:44- Yes, I think so, if we're lucky. - You look a bit disappointed.- No.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47- If we're lucky, we could get there. - Fine. Wonderful.- Yes.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50As you said, 20-30 quid, something like that might go

0:12:50 > 0:12:52- for a lot more.- Yes. It's just a bit different.

0:12:52 > 0:12:57Yes, yes, you've got to make things attractive enough on the marketplace for people to want to buy them.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59Yes, you do, Jonty, thank you for that.

0:12:59 > 0:13:05A very successful day and plenty of curios to put before the bidders, including this large

0:13:05 > 0:13:08Italian-style silver-plated punch bowl

0:13:08 > 0:13:12that should prove to be a hit, with a price tag of £40-£60.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16There's the Walker & Hall coffee set.

0:13:16 > 0:13:22It has one cup missing but, with luck, it should still make another £40-60.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25Finally, will Gail be able to part with that agate bracelet?

0:13:25 > 0:13:28Once belonged to her mother and, along with the ring and watch

0:13:28 > 0:13:33Jonty gave this lot his highest estimate of the day, £130-£190.

0:13:33 > 0:13:39Still to come on Cash In The Attic, is the French perfume bottle heaven scent?

0:13:39 > 0:13:40That'll be £20.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44Goodness me, everybody, £20 there, £22, £25.

0:13:44 > 0:13:48Gail's been collecting these Stuart Crystal for years. Will it sparkle or fizzle?

0:13:48 > 0:13:51Straight off I'm bid £35 for the decanter.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55£40, £45, £50, in the room at £50...

0:13:55 > 0:14:00Find out how all our lots do as the hammer finally falls.

0:14:06 > 0:14:11It's just over two weeks since I met up with John and Gail at their beautiful home in Newbury.

0:14:11 > 0:14:16It's fantastic that they want to take their three grandchildren on a special day out,

0:14:16 > 0:14:17but they'll need the funds to do it.

0:14:17 > 0:14:22That's why we've come here. To Chiswick Auctions in West London where we're hoping to raise £300.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24More would be better, of course.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27Let hope there are some eager bidders in the room.

0:14:27 > 0:14:31This west London sale room holds weekly general auctions.

0:14:31 > 0:14:36The lot lists can be viewed online, which means we may see some bids from anywhere in the world.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40Hopefully there's been time for them to drum up interest in our lots.

0:14:40 > 0:14:45Well, Jonty, I always had my suspicions, they've just been realised.

0:14:45 > 0:14:49- Stand back!- You do that very well. This is one of John and Gail's items?

0:14:49 > 0:14:53It certainly is and it belonged to John's grandfather's brother. He worked in the prison service.

0:14:53 > 0:14:57They're hoping to raise £300. Anything else caught your eye?

0:14:57 > 0:15:01My favourite object was the coffee set that we saw really early on in the day.

0:15:01 > 0:15:06But what I really hope they do bring along is Grandma's bracelet.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08That'll make a bit of a difference.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11Most definitely. You have to put that down now, OK. I know you don't want to.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15Put it down, and let's go and find John and Gail.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18Jonty's right to hope they bring along the bracelet.

0:15:18 > 0:15:25If they don't, the £130 hole in our potential takings could hamper their chances of a grand day out.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29But hey, I think we might be in luck.

0:15:31 > 0:15:35- I see you've made it.- Yes, yes, that's right. Hiya, Jonty.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38- Welcome to the auction, what do you think of it?- It's very nice.

0:15:38 > 0:15:42- What have we here?- Well, we've got the family bracelet, Jonty.

0:15:42 > 0:15:48- Ahh!- We thought we'd bring it along today and try and sell it to auction.

0:15:48 > 0:15:51- And a reserve of how much? - Well, we've decided on £250,

0:15:51 > 0:15:55because we think that it's worth that from our point of view.

0:15:55 > 0:15:59And, er, if it doesn't go then we should take it home with us.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02- If it goes for more than that we shall be delighted.- Is there a reserve on anything else?

0:16:02 > 0:16:06Yes, I've put a reserve on the silver punch bowl today, of £60.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09That punch bowl you don't really want to sell you mean?

0:16:09 > 0:16:13Well, we can get a few more drinks out of it, hopefully. But let's see what happens in the auction today.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16Good luck to you. We're after £300, aren't we?

0:16:16 > 0:16:18- I'm hoping that we'll get a bit more than that.- Yes.

0:16:18 > 0:16:23The auction's about to start, so I think we should get into position, come on.

0:16:23 > 0:16:28With something for everyone, let's hope John and Gail's items stand out amongst the competition.

0:16:28 > 0:16:32There first on the podium is the French glass scent bottle

0:16:32 > 0:16:38which Jonty liked but gave a cautious estimate of £20-£30.

0:16:39 > 0:16:44Let's hope the first lot gives us the sweet smell of success. It's that perfume bottle, isn't it?

0:16:44 > 0:16:45- Start me £20 for it shall we?- Sir!

0:16:45 > 0:16:50Goodness me. Everybody. £20 there, £22, £25, £28,

0:16:50 > 0:16:53£30, £32, £35, £38,

0:16:53 > 0:16:59£40, £42, £45, £48, £50, £55, £60

0:16:59 > 0:17:02£65. £65 nearest to me, £65.

0:17:02 > 0:17:06£70 first bidding, £75, £80.

0:17:06 > 0:17:09£85 there. £90. £95.

0:17:09 > 0:17:10£100, £110.

0:17:10 > 0:17:16£110 then there to my left. At £110, all done then at £110.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20You did love that, didn't you?

0:17:20 > 0:17:23That day out for those three grandkids has just got much better.

0:17:23 > 0:17:25Or maybe I shouldn't count my chickens before they've hatched.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28That's incredible, you said what, 20-30 quid.

0:17:28 > 0:17:29Well, especially if it was damaged.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32The market doesn't like damaged things.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34- Yes, but this market does! - The sweet smell of success.

0:17:34 > 0:17:38Well, that's a sizable chunk of our target after just one lot.

0:17:38 > 0:17:42I wonder if this crowd will like the large hat box as much.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44Its up for £25-£35.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46£10 for the hat box. Surely for a £10 note.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49Anybody want this for £10?

0:17:49 > 0:17:52I'm bid, thank you, in the middle of the room £10, £12,

0:17:52 > 0:17:55£12, £14, £16, £18.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58The original bidder at £18.

0:17:58 > 0:17:59At £18 and going. For £18.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01£18. Aww.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04You win with some, then we take away with others.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06I think that was fair. Very fair price, Jonty.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09It's good to see everyone so positive.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11I think they're still on a high from that scent bottle.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15The next item is the leather folding stool that I found.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19We're hoping for £30-£40.

0:18:19 > 0:18:23At £24 then. You're all done at £24 and going for £24.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25After such a great start

0:18:25 > 0:18:28I'm a little worried that things are starting to go downhill.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30Still, I have high hopes for this next lot.

0:18:30 > 0:18:34That Maling bowl priced at £25-£35.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39£18. Three, two, one.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42- They didn't love it as much as I did.- No.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44Ah that's a shame.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48It must be hard to see things go for such small amounts.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50Surely our unusual next lot will cause a quiver of interest.

0:18:50 > 0:18:56The truncheon and cat o' nine tails up for £30-£50.

0:18:56 > 0:18:58£20 there, £22 sir, £22,

0:18:58 > 0:19:01£25, £28, £30, £32,

0:19:01 > 0:19:05£35, £38 £40, £45.

0:19:05 > 0:19:09£45 standing then at £45. Anybody else at £45?

0:19:09 > 0:19:12Gentleman standing. For £45... 254.

0:19:12 > 0:19:18Well, I wonder what buyer has in mind for these quirky historical pieces. We'll never know.

0:19:18 > 0:19:20It's been a bit up and down so far.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23I think everyone is keen to know how we're doing.

0:19:23 > 0:19:28- Halfway I can tell you you've raised £215.- That's very good.

0:19:28 > 0:19:29- So we're well on our way.- Excellent.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32Lovely.

0:19:32 > 0:19:36- Yes, that's great.- Let's have a little break and we'll pop back for the second half.

0:19:36 > 0:19:40If, like John and Gail, you have a special reason to raise some cash and are thinking

0:19:40 > 0:19:45of heading to auction, please remember that commission and other charges may apply.

0:19:45 > 0:19:50They vary from one sale room to another so it's always worth checking in advance.

0:19:50 > 0:19:55We hope John and Gail's remaining five lots will prove attractive to the crowd here.

0:19:55 > 0:20:00Still to come is the agate bracelet with an ambitious reserve price of £250,

0:20:00 > 0:20:05but the next lot is something they've brought from their old hotel.

0:20:05 > 0:20:11The mahogany card table, kept in such impressively good condition

0:20:11 > 0:20:13with an estimate of £40-£50.

0:20:14 > 0:20:18£28 for the card table. It's yours, sir, at £28. Anybody else? £28.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21Awwww.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25Aww indeed. Not the best way to kick off the second half.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28Will they have better luck with the next lot?

0:20:28 > 0:20:33The Walker & Hall china and silver coffee set priced at £40-£60.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36This is one of our favourite lots,

0:20:36 > 0:20:38the next one, the coffee set, but one of the cups is missing.

0:20:38 > 0:20:44Yes, we have one missing cup and a broken cup as well. So if it had been a complete set we'd have

0:20:44 > 0:20:49been in for a real winner but who know what it's going to sell for because it's a slightly damaged set.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51£40. Anybody else? £45. £50 with me.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54Got £55. £55 in the distance.

0:20:54 > 0:21:00£55 anybody else? At £55, are you all done and finished at £55?

0:21:00 > 0:21:02- Three two five. - We got your money back.

0:21:02 > 0:21:07It just goes to prove that everything doesn't have to be in perfectly working order.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09No. No. That was a good result.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12Manufacturers with a reputation for quality

0:21:12 > 0:21:18often have great saleability, even when the items are damaged so they're always worth a punt.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20Your local auction house will be able to advise.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23Well, the next lot is something from Caroline's mother-in-law.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25The silver-on-copper punch bowl.

0:21:25 > 0:21:32Jonty valued it at £40-£60 and there's a £60 reserve in place also.

0:21:32 > 0:21:37For the punch bowl, great big punch bowl for £40. £30 then to go. Nobody want it for £30.

0:21:37 > 0:21:41- I'm not going to sell it... £30 I'm bid.- Here we go.- It's amazing, everybody all at once now.

0:21:41 > 0:21:45£30 with you standing, sir. £35, thank you. £40, sir.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47It's like getting blood out of a stone.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50£35 I've got, seated at £35. £35.

0:21:50 > 0:21:52- It's so pretty I'm sure somebody would love it.- £40 further away.

0:21:52 > 0:21:57Do you want £45? No? £40 further away, not quite enough at £40.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00For £40.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02Well, it's disappointing for you and maybe us as well.

0:22:02 > 0:22:08But there's one person who's really thrilled that she's taking that punch bowl back home.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11- You still going to punch him or should I?- You can punch him.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13- I'll hold him. - Its nothing to do with him!

0:22:13 > 0:22:15I think Caroline might even use it

0:22:15 > 0:22:18tonight when they get home if all goes well here.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20The collection of Stuart crystal is on next.

0:22:20 > 0:22:25Gail was given some as a wedding present and has been collecting them ever since.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28We're hoping for £40-£60.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31Straight off I'm bid £35 for the decanter.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34£40, £45, £50, in the room at £50.

0:22:34 > 0:22:38£55 there. £60. Five.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41£65 on the bed at £65. Anybody else?

0:22:41 > 0:22:45At £65, that lot there. £65 all done.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48- Oh, I'm pleased.- Good result.

0:22:48 > 0:22:52- Very good.- I was worried that the drinkers weren't out there when the punch bowl came back.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54But they obviously are.

0:22:54 > 0:22:58Fantastic. Just over Jonty's upper estimate.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00No wonder they're delighted.

0:23:00 > 0:23:05Now to our final items, the jewellery and the watch that belonged to Gail's mother.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08The auctioneer recommended splitting them into two separate lots.

0:23:08 > 0:23:13First the 18 carrot gold engagement ring with three small diamonds

0:23:13 > 0:23:15along with the sterling silver ladies' wristwatch.

0:23:15 > 0:23:19Their estimate is £30 to £50.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24£50 in that doorway there. £50 anybody else?

0:23:24 > 0:23:26At £50 hiding in the doorway.

0:23:26 > 0:23:28£50.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30- Somebody loves it.- It's amazing.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32Every time you said "bit more", "bit more"

0:23:32 > 0:23:36they put a bit more on! It's what you call a top result.

0:23:36 > 0:23:39It seems there are some jewellery fans here.

0:23:39 > 0:23:41But I wonder if the agate bracelet will do as well.

0:23:41 > 0:23:47There's a good deal of sentimental value attached, so Gail has put a reserve on it of £250.

0:23:47 > 0:23:52Lets hope she's wise to disregard Jonty's much lower estimate.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55We're straight in at £24O.

0:23:55 > 0:24:00With me at £240, £250, £260, £270.

0:24:00 > 0:24:02£270 now for that bracelet at £270.

0:24:04 > 0:24:10£280 to my left, at £280 against commissions. £280, anybody else?

0:24:10 > 0:24:13With you, sir, at £280. At £280 it's going once, twice.

0:24:13 > 0:24:16£280!

0:24:16 > 0:24:17That's good.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20That's good. Quite happy with that.

0:24:20 > 0:24:21What an incredible result.

0:24:21 > 0:24:25Gail obviously knew what her mother's bracelet was worth.

0:24:25 > 0:24:28So how have we done overall today?

0:24:28 > 0:24:32- Well, that's it, guys. You almost sold everything.- M-hm.

0:24:32 > 0:24:35I had a feeling that punch bowl might be coming back.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37- To haunt us?- To haunt you for ever.

0:24:37 > 0:24:44- More celebrations.- Well, you wanted £300 to take your three very special grandkids on a special day out.

0:24:44 > 0:24:48- You've done it easily.- Really? - I can tell you you're in for a really, really special day.

0:24:48 > 0:24:54- £693 you've raised. - That's brilliant! That's absolutely brilliant.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56- Oh, my goodness. - Its great news for me and Jonty.

0:24:56 > 0:25:00- It means we can go along as well. - We can get the punch bowl out! - So where we going?

0:25:07 > 0:25:10Well, just a few weeks after the auction John and Gail's grandson Jake

0:25:10 > 0:25:15came over from Spain to enjoy a spectacular day out with his family.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18The grandchildren are not only taking a day trip to London.

0:25:18 > 0:25:22- They'll also be travelling there in style.- Wow!

0:25:23 > 0:25:29Wow indeed. Caroline's daughters Sophie and Georgia are very impressed.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31- Its like we're famous.- And excited. - Yeah.

0:25:31 > 0:25:33- Me too.- Excited.

0:25:38 > 0:25:39ALL: Cheers!

0:25:40 > 0:25:45The day out started with lunch at a themed cafe in the heart of London's West End...

0:25:47 > 0:25:51..and continued with a visit to a collection of the weird and wonderful.

0:25:51 > 0:25:55Oh, I think it's been a tremendous finish to this whole episode, really.

0:25:55 > 0:25:57Getting all the grandchildren together,

0:25:57 > 0:26:01coming up in the limousine this morning, which was very exciting.

0:26:01 > 0:26:05- Seeing their faces when they met this morning.- Yeah. - That was nice, wasn't it?

0:26:05 > 0:26:10I love going out with my cousins cos I really love them.

0:26:17 > 0:26:22Well, I'm so happy we were able to raise £693 for John and Gail

0:26:22 > 0:26:24to take their three grandkids on a fabulous day out.

0:26:24 > 0:26:28If you want to raise some money and you've got the antiques hidden around your home,
