0:00:02 > 0:00:03Hello and welcome to Cash In The Attic,

0:00:03 > 0:00:07the show that hunts out hidden treasures and helps you sell them at auction.

0:00:07 > 0:00:13Today, I'm in all the hubbub of east London and I'm on my way to a house that I think is full of promise.

0:00:13 > 0:00:18I'm told there are all sorts of collectables in there, including this, an ostrich egg!

0:00:18 > 0:00:21What do you reckon it's worth? Well, I couldn't possibly tell you,

0:00:21 > 0:00:27but I know a man who can and all will be revealed before the final hammer falls.

0:00:46 > 0:00:52Coming up on Cash In The Attic, one of our items is music to Jonty's ears.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56- I really do like that sound. - That is beautiful. - It's the ring of confidence.

0:00:56 > 0:01:02- Yes, definitely!- There's excitement at a rare and valuable find.

0:01:02 > 0:01:07I knew that that was a loved piece, but now my heart's racing!

0:01:07 > 0:01:11And at the auction, is satisfaction ever guaranteed?

0:01:11 > 0:01:14- She says it's not enough. - It's not enough. Come on, more!

0:01:14 > 0:01:18Find out when the final hammer falls.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21I'm in Bethnal Green and I'm on my way to meet the daughters

0:01:21 > 0:01:25of a truly remarkable woman who is sadly no longer with us.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29But she's left behind a rich legacy from a lifetime of collecting.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32The question, though, is are there any real riches there?

0:01:32 > 0:01:36The Cash In The Attic team have been called in to find out.

0:01:36 > 0:01:42Until just a few weeks ago, this house in London's Bethnal Green was home to Doreen Perry.

0:01:42 > 0:01:47She was a remarkable woman whose achievements in life included the creation of a highly successful

0:01:47 > 0:01:52record label and saving a school from certain closure.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56Her passion for collecting has left this three-bedroomed home full of antiques

0:01:56 > 0:02:00and their destiny now lies in the hands of her two daughters,

0:02:00 > 0:02:06Louise, a website designer, and Nicki, who has her own restaurant in New York.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10Jonty Hearnden is our expert today and he's looking forward to finding

0:02:10 > 0:02:15an array of antique furniture and, hopefully, some quality collectables.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17- Hello, ladies.- Hello.- Hi.- Hello.

0:02:17 > 0:02:18- Who's who here, then?- Nicki.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22- Hi, Nicki.- Louise.- Thank you so much for inviting us here

0:02:22 > 0:02:25- because I know that your mother passed away very recently, didn't she?- Yeah.

0:02:25 > 0:02:29- What kind of woman was she? - Unbelievably enthusiastic about the things that she loved.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Very black and white person.

0:02:31 > 0:02:36- So how much money do you want to raise today?- We think £1,000. - As much as possible.- Yes, as much...

0:02:36 > 0:02:39- Yes, as much as possible. - And what's it going to go towards?

0:02:39 > 0:02:45She was the chair of governors at the Sir John Cass Foundation Redcoat School here in Bethnal Green,

0:02:45 > 0:02:50- which is why she moved here. - It's for the school that your mother helped so much?

0:02:50 > 0:02:53- Yeah.- Brilliant. All right, so £1,000 for the school.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55- We'd better get rummaging.- Yes.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59Doreen's antiques took pride of place in her home.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02The display is remarkable and, with any luck,

0:03:02 > 0:03:07we should be able to find enough items to raise that £1,000 at the auction.

0:03:09 > 0:03:14Jonty, of course, has spent his life immersed in the world of antiques

0:03:14 > 0:03:17and he's always the first to get started on our rummaging.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19Today, it looks as if he's going to have

0:03:19 > 0:03:21some excellent support from Nicki and Louise,

0:03:21 > 0:03:24who've already found something to show him.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26We've got three maps of old London.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Wonderful. These are originals.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31- Really?- We should have a date here at the bottom.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33It says 1755?

0:03:33 > 0:03:35That's very old, isn't it?

0:03:35 > 0:03:37- That's amazing. - Yeah, that is amazing.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39And they really are a snapshot in time.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43This is obviously what the north of the old city of London looked like.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45So this is of Cripplegate.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48Cripplegate was a gate in the old wall in the City of London

0:03:48 > 0:03:52- and it's the Barbican now. - My mother lived in the Barbican.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55- Oh, that's where she had this. - That's why she's got that, yeah.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57That's why maps are interesting, how the world changed.

0:03:57 > 0:04:02Often you see little maps of London and then, voom, it's a whole metropolis.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06- So, can we sell these? - Yes, absolutely. What do you think we'd get for those?

0:04:06 > 0:04:07We're looking at, what?

0:04:07 > 0:04:10For three, £100 to £150.

0:04:17 > 0:04:22That's a good valuation to kick off our day here in Bethnal Green,

0:04:22 > 0:04:27and we have our first contribution towards that target of £1,000.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29As we split up to cover all corners,

0:04:29 > 0:04:32it's becoming clear just how keen a collector Doreen was.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36There's more than enough here to keep Jonty busy.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39- Well, it's a holder to put your plant pot into.- Right.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41But it really is very good quality.

0:04:41 > 0:04:45I don't think this is 19th century, I think it's 20th century.

0:04:45 > 0:04:50- OK.- But the decoration is really top quality, it's very, very beautiful,

0:04:50 > 0:04:55and all of that is hand-decorated with this lovely gilded decoration round the outside.

0:04:55 > 0:05:02The mark is Copeland. Now, that's a good sign because Copeland started life in Staffordshire in the 1770s,

0:05:02 > 0:05:05And I think this jardiniere is so attractive, so decorative,

0:05:05 > 0:05:09that it's got to be worth around about £100.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11- That's great.- Happy?- Very happy.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Oh, I'm happy. I really do like that sound.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15- That is beautiful. - It's nice, isn't it?

0:05:15 > 0:05:18- It's the ring of confidence. - Yes, definitely!

0:05:18 > 0:05:22What a great price for a modern piece with no antique value,

0:05:22 > 0:05:24but will Jonty be as confident about the next item?

0:05:24 > 0:05:30I can't imagine he's come across too many giant ornamental eggs in his time!

0:05:30 > 0:05:32Of course, they're ostrich eggs,

0:05:32 > 0:05:34but we have a pair here, but we've also got

0:05:34 > 0:05:39this lovely decorated ostrich egg here, covered in butterflies.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42But ostrich eggs, you can see just how decorative they are.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45Well, let's take a look at the pair in more detail.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48If I pick this one up here, we can see that we have a crack in the top.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52This is where the innards have been taken out, but to cover that crack up

0:05:52 > 0:05:55they have placed this decorative finial on the top,

0:05:55 > 0:05:58but the stands themselves are extraordinary.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01They are gilded bronze, very heavy, and I believe these to be stands

0:06:01 > 0:06:05for oriental vases, so the vases have been taken away

0:06:05 > 0:06:09and the stands have been almost like recycled to place the pair of eggs on the top,

0:06:09 > 0:06:12but they make just a great pair. I suspect that we're looking at

0:06:12 > 0:06:14between £80 and £120 there.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17What do you think of that valuation?

0:06:17 > 0:06:18- That's fabulous.- OK?- Absolutely.

0:06:18 > 0:06:23I just hope those eggs get to auction in one piece!

0:06:23 > 0:06:26While Jonty, Nicki and Louise are still hunting around the house,

0:06:26 > 0:06:30I'm reminded that Doreen's passion for collecting encompassed both old and new.

0:06:30 > 0:06:35In her old bedroom, there's more evidence of her love of the contemporary.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38These two blown glass bowls are really rather stylish

0:06:38 > 0:06:43and Jonty packs them off to auction with a £50 to £70 price tag.

0:06:43 > 0:06:49On the landing, he spots a pair of pictures of Doreen's favourite subject matter, the butterfly.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52They're Oriental silk and date from the 19th century.

0:06:52 > 0:06:57Jonty thinks they should fetch £40 to £60 at auction.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01The butterfly motif appears in almost every room of Doreen's house.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05She was clearly quite a character and I want to learn more about her.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07So this is your mother, Doreen.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09My goodness me!

0:07:09 > 0:07:14What a stylish, incredible lady. Are these quite recent, these pictures?

0:07:14 > 0:07:18- They are recent. I think they're within the last six months. - Yeah, they are.

0:07:18 > 0:07:25And even when she was very, very ill, she still had the full face of make-up, the shoes, the outfit

0:07:25 > 0:07:31- when she could barely walk.- She was clearly a most extraordinary woman, but what was her upbringing like?

0:07:31 > 0:07:34We didn't know who her real parents were. She wouldn't discuss it.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36In actual fact, when she was 18 months old,

0:07:36 > 0:07:41her parents separated and they dumped her in a children's home.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43- How extraordinary.- Which is why I think

0:07:43 > 0:07:46- she's always been for the underdog.- She was very tough.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Passionate about the opera and classical music.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52We were not allowed to play pop music in the house.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55She loved it. It was her passion.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59And I don't know that she knew as much as my dad, but she absolutely loved it.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03And the two of them started Hyperion Records,

0:08:03 > 0:08:06which is the most prestigious small classical record label in the world

0:08:06 > 0:08:10and has won all sorts of awards, and they started that company together.

0:08:10 > 0:08:14- I tell you, you two have got something to live up to, haven't you?- We have!

0:08:14 > 0:08:17I don't think we'll ever make it! Not even combined!

0:08:17 > 0:08:20What a lady!

0:08:20 > 0:08:22And that's not to mention the school she saved from closure.

0:08:22 > 0:08:27But we're here to raise £1,000 so we need to get back to work.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31Jonty's still hard at it, and has unearthed an Edwardian oval tray.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34With a musical design in the centre and a fluted edge,

0:08:34 > 0:08:38it wings its way to auction with an estimate of £30-£50.

0:08:38 > 0:08:43As we continue to search every inch of this property, Nicki concentrates

0:08:43 > 0:08:48her efforts in the garden room, home to her mum's favourite pieces of china.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52She picks out this porcelain cow, which is, in fact, a novelty creamer.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55It's based on a design that originated in Holland

0:08:55 > 0:08:59and was later produced in the UK from the mid-18th century.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02It's in great condition and heads off to auction

0:09:02 > 0:09:04with a very respectable £80 to £120 estimate.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06And in the dining room,

0:09:06 > 0:09:09something rather special has caught Jonty's eye.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11Take a look at this.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14- Gosh, that's beautiful.- This fan is stunning.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17This whole scene here is hand-painted,

0:09:17 > 0:09:21so this is a paper fan suspended on mother-of-pearl.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23That's what gives it the lovely glistening effect.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26Yes, can you imagine in subdued light,

0:09:26 > 0:09:29under candlelight or under oil light, the shimmer of mother-of-pearl?

0:09:29 > 0:09:35- Is it old, then?- Very old. Date-wise, we're looking between 210,

0:09:35 > 0:09:39maybe 240 years old and it's not English, it's French.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Oh, my word, that's incredible!

0:09:41 > 0:09:44Yeah. It's very interesting, that, because the closer you look,

0:09:44 > 0:09:50the more restoration you see, which makes sense because this is paper, just how fragile it would be.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53- It's been restored?- Have a look here. Can you see...- Oh, OK.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57- ..that there is extra layers of paper that have been laid upon...?- Wow!

0:09:57 > 0:10:00And therefore hand-painted in to restore it.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02- It all makes sense. - So it's been loved, then.

0:10:02 > 0:10:07Absolutely. And it's been worth one's while restoring this

0:10:07 > 0:10:11because you're looking not at just a fan, you're looking at a work of art.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13I was going to say that. It is a work of art.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16- It really is.- It's very beautiful. - Hence the reason why it's framed.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19And why people collect these - they're so beautiful.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22But with a fan like this,

0:10:22 > 0:10:25there's something else to be looked at, so let me show you.

0:10:25 > 0:10:29Now, can you notice that this has no back to it at all?

0:10:29 > 0:10:32- OK.- That was an optical illusion. I thought there was a backing.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35So let me take this off. What can we see?

0:10:35 > 0:10:37- Oh, my goodness!- Wow!- What do I see? - It's painted on the back.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40So it's totally different. It's unique.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43I don't want to put an exact figure on it because of the restoration,

0:10:43 > 0:10:47but we're looking at between £200 and £400.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49- Whoa!- Wow, that's incredible.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51- Yes? Happy?- That's fantastic.

0:10:51 > 0:10:56That really is an amazing object and so delicate.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58Will that count on sale day?

0:10:58 > 0:11:02At £65. I'm bid 70. 75. 80.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06Find out later whether this gilt-framed work of art reaches its top estimate at auction.

0:11:09 > 0:11:15The fan has spurred us all on to keep looking and Nicki has spotted a pair of framed prints of London.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18Jonty thinks the prints could appeal to history-lovers

0:11:18 > 0:11:21and values the pair at £80 to £120.

0:11:23 > 0:11:28Louise is upstairs, searching through her mum's old cupboards and discovers an impressive collection

0:11:28 > 0:11:32of hats, some of them by milliner, Stephen Jones.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36I've heard how particular Doreen was about her appearance and Jonty thinks

0:11:36 > 0:11:43this rather splendid collection could fetch upwards of £80.

0:11:43 > 0:11:47On a roll, she sends this elegant chair off to auction.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51Its ornate tapestry covering is in superb condition,

0:11:51 > 0:11:54but it's a modern reproduction of a French-style chair

0:11:54 > 0:11:58so Jonty values it accordingly at £60 to £80.

0:12:01 > 0:12:06We're making good progress towards our target of £1,000 that the sisters will donate to the school.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09And, lurking amongst the mass of china,

0:12:09 > 0:12:13Jonty discovers an item that could be the find we're all hoping for.

0:12:13 > 0:12:20- Guys, you HAVE to stop what you're doing here because I have found a really rare item.- Oh, really?

0:12:20 > 0:12:24Look at this beautiful bowl. This is quite...

0:12:24 > 0:12:28- You know, I'm gobsmacked, I really am! I really am gobsmacked. - Did you know this was special?

0:12:28 > 0:12:34- I knew that that was a loved piece, but now my heart's racing! - Well, it is very exciting.

0:12:34 > 0:12:38This is a bowl that was made in Worcester,

0:12:38 > 0:12:44but made a long time ago in the Worcester factory. About 1770.

0:12:44 > 0:12:48- Wow!- Really?- And we have the mark on the underside here.

0:12:48 > 0:12:53- This under-glaze blue mark was used by the factory all the way up until 1785.- OK.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56But it's distinctively Worcester.

0:12:56 > 0:13:02If you see the blue, particularly, that is in the style of fish scales.

0:13:02 > 0:13:06They were copying factories like Sevres and Chelsea,

0:13:06 > 0:13:09but at the time, at the time when this bowl was made,

0:13:09 > 0:13:13they were producing the finest porcelain the country was producing

0:13:13 > 0:13:17and that's why so many people collect Worcester of this period.

0:13:17 > 0:13:21But there's a little bit of a problem that we have on the other side.

0:13:21 > 0:13:23It looks perfect,

0:13:23 > 0:13:27but there's a slightly different colour.

0:13:27 > 0:13:29There's a bit of a shadow there.

0:13:29 > 0:13:33- Now, I think that that's restoration. - Really?- Yes.

0:13:33 > 0:13:39- If you turn it on the other side too, can you see a slightly different colour...- Oh, yes, yes.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43..to the inside there? Now, if this was in good condition, and I don't

0:13:43 > 0:13:50believe that it is in perfect condition, at auction, this should sell for in excess of £1,000.

0:13:50 > 0:13:55But with restoration, I believe this to be more like the £500 mark.

0:13:55 > 0:14:00- That's not too bad, is it? - No, it's fantastic.- Yeah? You'd better tell Louise about it.

0:14:00 > 0:14:04- Louise!- Go and tell her that we've made a very interesting find.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07Hi! I think you can stop rummaging now, my dear.

0:14:07 > 0:14:11- Ah, the bowl.- Yeah. - Yes. Beautiful.

0:14:11 > 0:14:15I got very, very excited, but I think I've spotted a bit of restoration,

0:14:15 > 0:14:20- so we are still, hopefully, looking around £500 at the moment. - Wow, that's fantastic.

0:14:20 > 0:14:24It's a very positive way to end the day, actually, and what a day it's been!

0:14:24 > 0:14:28- At the start of the day, we were saying that you wanted to raise £1,000...- Yeah.

0:14:28 > 0:14:34..to help the school that your mother did so much for and that meant so much to her.

0:14:34 > 0:14:39Well, even with the damaged bowl, we reckon that you will, in fact,

0:14:39 > 0:14:42at the auction make £1,380.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44Fantastic.

0:14:44 > 0:14:48- Brilliant.- The school will be thrilled with that.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52We've had a fascinating day in Bethnal Green hearing all about a quite remarkable woman.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55And didn't she have an eye for collectables!

0:14:55 > 0:14:58Heading off to auction, we have the highly unusual collection

0:14:58 > 0:15:00of decorative ostrich eggs.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03Who knows what someone might pay for this quirky lot,

0:15:03 > 0:15:07but we're hoping it'll be at least £80.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12The beautiful hand-painted fan that survived intact

0:15:12 > 0:15:13for over two centuries.

0:15:13 > 0:15:17It's a work of art and deserves to reach its £200 estimate.

0:15:19 > 0:15:23And, of course, the incredible 18th-century Worcester plate.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26Jonty was rendered almost speechless by its rarity

0:15:26 > 0:15:28and there's every chance

0:15:28 > 0:15:30his estimate could be blown clean out of the water.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37Still to come on Cash In The Attic, there's division in the ranks.

0:15:37 > 0:15:42I'm going to feel positive. I'm going to send out positive vibes.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45I don't know, I'm feeling sort of either way on this one.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48It's a rollercoaster ride, but all is not lost.

0:15:48 > 0:15:53- Result! Hurrah! - And does Doreen's spirit live on?

0:15:53 > 0:15:56- She is here.- She's definitely here.

0:15:56 > 0:15:57And she's cross!

0:15:57 > 0:16:00Find out when the final hammer falls.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08It's a couple of weeks since we were with Nicki and Louise at their mother's home

0:16:08 > 0:16:14in Bethnal Green, and I have to say it was one of the most fascinating days of rummaging I've ever had.

0:16:14 > 0:16:18Now, remember they want to raise £1,000 for the school

0:16:18 > 0:16:19that meant so much to their mother,

0:16:19 > 0:16:22so let's hope the bidders here at Chiswick Auction Rooms

0:16:22 > 0:16:28in west London really are going to do her memory proud when her items go under the hammer.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31Now, Jonty always has an eye

0:16:31 > 0:16:35for the out-of-the-ordinary and he's headed straight for our star item.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38Since the rummage, he's had time to do a bit more research about it.

0:16:38 > 0:16:40Good morning.

0:16:40 > 0:16:41- Oh, there you are.- Oh!

0:16:41 > 0:16:44- Still admiring my lovely bowl. - Oh, the bowl. Oh.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46This bowl is exquisite.

0:16:46 > 0:16:50- We were worried about the damage.- I know.- Did you get a second opinion?

0:16:50 > 0:16:54Well, I've had a second opinion, yes, and I've talked to the guys here and they think

0:16:54 > 0:16:59that my initial gut reaction of £500 might even be too high, so we're looking at more like £300 to £500.

0:16:59 > 0:17:03- Oh, well, hopefully, somebody does! - Well, I do, too.- Yes. - Because we've got other items.

0:17:03 > 0:17:07- Let's go and see if the girls have arrived.- OK.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09It's disappointing that the Worcester bowl

0:17:09 > 0:17:10hasn't turned out to be worth more,

0:17:10 > 0:17:15so let's hope Nicki and Louise aren't too deflated before we even start the day.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17- Good morning. - Hello.- Hi! How are you?

0:17:17 > 0:17:22- How you're you doing?- Nice to see you again.- And you.- We had such fun! - It was fun.- Yeah, a really good day.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24And you've got the lovely egg.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27- We have.- The auctioneer's split up the ostrich collection.

0:17:27 > 0:17:30Now, that lovely one you've got in your hand will be sold separately

0:17:30 > 0:17:33and all the others will be in a different lot.

0:17:33 > 0:17:37They'll get more money that way, so that's good news for us.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40Shall we get a place? The auction's about to start.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43- Yes.- Put it down carefully!- Yes, don't break the egg!- No!- OK.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45Go and get a spot.

0:17:45 > 0:17:49If, like Nicki and Louise, you're thinking of heading to auction, remember that commission

0:17:49 > 0:17:54and other charges may be added to your bill, so do check the details with your auction house.

0:17:54 > 0:17:59The sale is about to start and we all get into position for the opening lot of the day.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02This is my favourite of your ostrich eggs, actually.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05This lovely painted one. I think it's gorgeous, I really do.

0:18:05 > 0:18:07- So, we want 80 to 120.- £80 to £120.

0:18:07 > 0:18:11- Come on!- I've got to start this no less than £60. £60, start me.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13Bid me £60. No bids of 60, I'll move on.

0:18:13 > 0:18:17- Oh, no!- No interest at £60.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19- Oh.- Unsold.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21- That's bad news. - That's not a good start.- No.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25Well, there just wasn't a market for our decorated egg.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27The other eggs will be coming up later.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30Maybe the engravings of these London landmarks

0:18:30 > 0:18:35that Jonty valued at £80 to £120 will ignite some interest.

0:18:36 > 0:18:40No bids of £60. I'm forced to pass it. No interest at £60.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43- This is not on, is it?- Not sold.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45- She's in the room.- She's here.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47- She's in the room. - She's here, she's mad!

0:18:47 > 0:18:51- Really?- She's cross with you! Oh, girls, you look really shocked!

0:18:51 > 0:18:53I am! I'm a bit freaked out.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55- She IS here.- She's definitely here.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57And she's cross!

0:18:57 > 0:19:00With such a slow start to the day, it's no surprise that the sisters

0:19:00 > 0:19:03are wondering whether they should be selling

0:19:03 > 0:19:05their mother's belongings at all,

0:19:05 > 0:19:11but Nicki and Louise are sure that it's all for a cause their mother was passionate about,

0:19:11 > 0:19:13so let's hope the Staffordshire cow creamer stirs up some interest.

0:19:13 > 0:19:17£40? I don't know if I can sell it. £40, I'm bid. 45, there. 50. Five.

0:19:17 > 0:19:1960. Five. 70.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21You know you want it.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23£70, I'm bid, to my left. At £70. That's more like it.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25I'll take five elsewhere.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27Is that the money, then? At £70 and selling.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30We got that away. Sold.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32Sold. We've started!

0:19:32 > 0:19:37Thank goodness, a sale at last! But just under Jonty's lowest estimate.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41It seems the bidders here only have eyes for our quirkier items.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44Next up is the exquisite hand-painted fan.

0:19:44 > 0:19:49It's in absolutely perfect condition and might just be the piece to get hearts racing.

0:19:49 > 0:19:53I've got a good feeling about this and Jonty thinks we can get £200

0:19:53 > 0:19:58to £400 for it, but has he got the measure of the crowd here today?

0:20:00 > 0:20:03At £65. I'm bid 70. 75. 80.

0:20:03 > 0:20:0585. 90.

0:20:05 > 0:20:09- 95. 100. 110. 120? At £110.- Come on.

0:20:09 > 0:20:14Need 120, now. At £110. Commission bidder at £110 and selling.

0:20:14 > 0:20:15Are we all done?

0:20:18 > 0:20:22- Disappointing.- Yes. - Oh, I was hoping for so much more than that, but it's sold.- It's sold.

0:20:22 > 0:20:27It's a sale, but well below Jonty's lowest estimate.

0:20:27 > 0:20:29We really need to drum up some interest to get

0:20:29 > 0:20:33anywhere near our target of £1,000 and help Doreen's school.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37Luck's just not on our side, as the hand-painted jardiniere

0:20:37 > 0:20:40fails to attract any bids at all!

0:20:40 > 0:20:43No interest at £60.

0:20:43 > 0:20:45It's beginning to look

0:20:45 > 0:20:48as if Nicki and Louise will be taking more of their mum's collectables home

0:20:48 > 0:20:51than they'd thought.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53And next is the contemporary glass bowls

0:20:53 > 0:20:56that Jonty priced at £50 to £70.

0:20:56 > 0:20:59£30, to start me. £30, I'm bid. Take two.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01- At £30.- Thank God for that.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04At 32. 35. 38. At £35, then.

0:21:04 > 0:21:08At £35. I'll take 38 now. All done at £35 and selling?

0:21:08 > 0:21:10- We got a sale.- We have.

0:21:10 > 0:21:14Well, it's a result, but well under Jonty's lowest estimate.

0:21:14 > 0:21:21At the halfway stage of the sale, we've made £215 towards our £1,000 target.

0:21:21 > 0:21:22We've a long way to go.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25Let's hope the 18th century maps of London come up trumps!

0:21:25 > 0:21:29Jonty valued them at £100 to £150.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32I've got two bids on this. I'll start it with me at £130.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35- I'll take 140 in the room. 140 there.- Yeah!- 150. 160.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37As £150 with me, then. I'll take 160 now.

0:21:37 > 0:21:40- Come on.- At £150 on commissions.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43Are we all done? Last chance of selling at £150, then.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46- Yes.- Result! Hurrah!

0:21:46 > 0:21:50Fantastic, and it seems we're on a roll, as the reproduction

0:21:50 > 0:21:53tapestry chair flies out of the room.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56At £65. 70. 75. 80.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59Are we all done? And selling them, 173, £85.

0:21:59 > 0:22:04- Yes! Well done. Yes!- Yeah!- How does that feel?- Feels good!

0:22:04 > 0:22:06£5 over Jonty's top estimate.

0:22:06 > 0:22:09At last, things seem to be picking up in the saleroom.

0:22:09 > 0:22:13And next under the hammer is the item we're all counting on.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16With any luck, the distinctive 18th-century Worcester bowl

0:22:16 > 0:22:18will turn everybody's heads.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20Jonty's certain that somebody will be happy

0:22:20 > 0:22:23to part with £300 to £500 for it.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26I'm feeling nervous because we really need this to sell.

0:22:26 > 0:22:30- It's your star item. It's the bowl, the Worcester bowl. - How are the vibes, girls?

0:22:30 > 0:22:34I'm going to feel positive. I'm going to send out positive vibes.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37I don't know, I'm feeling sort of either way on this one.

0:22:37 > 0:22:39OK. Let's see if we can sell it. Fingers crossed.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42Start me at £300, please. No interest at 300.

0:22:42 > 0:22:45No bids at £300, then.

0:22:45 > 0:22:49So, we won't be giving the school £1,000, then.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51- No.- Silence has fallen over the room.

0:22:51 > 0:22:55- Yes, there is a silence. - It's all gone deadly quiet. Unsold.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57Well, there are stunned faces all round.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00That really is a huge disappointment for us all.

0:23:00 > 0:23:04We're going to need a dramatic turn in Nicki and Louise's fortunes

0:23:04 > 0:23:06if they're to donate £1,000 to the school now.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09Can those ostrich eggs possibly do it for them?

0:23:09 > 0:23:10£30 to start me. £30 I'm bid.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13Take two. At £30. A maiden bid at £30, then.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16I'm selling at £30. All done.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18£30, sold.

0:23:18 > 0:23:20- Egg-cellent. - Well, not...- Egg-cellent!

0:23:20 > 0:23:22You don't have egg on your face.

0:23:22 > 0:23:26Not bad, but it hasn't done enough to rescue us.

0:23:26 > 0:23:28We have to make more sales, and quick!

0:23:28 > 0:23:35We still have the Edwardian inlaid tray is up next, and Jonty thinks we can get £30 to £50 for it.

0:23:35 > 0:23:39At £40, then. In front of me at £40. All done, then, at £40.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42A great result, bang in the middle of Jonty's estimate,

0:23:42 > 0:23:46but we need some even better sales if we're to get anywhere near

0:23:46 > 0:23:48supporting their mother's cherished cause.

0:23:48 > 0:23:53Maybe the silk butterfly pictures will get a bidding war going.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07Is that enough at £60? Are we all done?

0:24:07 > 0:24:11Selling at £60, then. 589.

0:24:11 > 0:24:15- She says it's not enough. - It's not enough, come on, more!

0:24:15 > 0:24:19We have just one more lot to sell in the quest to help Doreen's school.

0:24:19 > 0:24:22Let's hope that this amazing collection of designer hats

0:24:22 > 0:24:24leave the saleroom in style.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27It's a splendid collection. We're hoping for how much?

0:24:27 > 0:24:30- £80 to £120. - Hard to value, really.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32They are, but they've got great designer names

0:24:32 > 0:24:36- and very good quality, so...- OK. - Let's see what happens.- Here we go.

0:25:20 > 0:25:23- That was important to you, wasn't it?- It was.- Yes.

0:25:23 > 0:25:27A well-deserved outcome, way over Jonty's top estimate.

0:25:27 > 0:25:31It was a tough start and an emotional day for everyone,

0:25:31 > 0:25:34but what a great end to the auction.

0:25:34 > 0:25:38The hats really were the main attraction, but how far off our target are we?

0:25:42 > 0:25:46- You won't be surprised to know we haven't quite made £1,000 but you have made £770.- Oh, wow!

0:26:05 > 0:26:10Today, Louise has come to the Sir John Cass Red Coat School in Stepney, east London.

0:26:10 > 0:26:14Their mother devoted so much of her time and energy to ensuring its future.

0:26:31 > 0:26:37made some money and that we can give it to the school. That's what she would have wanted.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43Now, if you'd like to raise money for something special
