0:00:03 > 0:00:06- Can I have a little rummage around in your rubbish?- Yeah.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08How do you make money for nothing?

0:00:10 > 0:00:11I love that!

0:00:11 > 0:00:15The answer could be hiding in the 30 million tonnes

0:00:15 > 0:00:18of household waste we throw out every year.

0:00:18 > 0:00:22So heavy. They don't make them like this any more. Look at that.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24That's why entrepreneur Sarah Moore

0:00:24 > 0:00:28wants to get her hands on things before they hit the skip.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34I'm a passionate maker, buyer and user of old stuff.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37And I've turned that passion into a moneymaking business.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41I make new stuff out of old stuff and I sell it for a profit.

0:00:41 > 0:00:45And with some of the country's elite designers and makers...

0:00:45 > 0:00:47Say something nice about it.

0:00:47 > 0:00:48My juices are flowing in this one.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50They are going to be wow.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53..she can transform her finds into desirable...

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Isn't that stunning?!

0:00:55 > 0:00:57..valuable...

0:00:58 > 0:00:59Oh, wow!

0:00:59 > 0:01:02..and hopefully saleable items.

0:01:02 > 0:01:03That is bonkers.

0:01:03 > 0:01:07If Sarah is successful, then she can hand the profits back

0:01:07 > 0:01:10to the very people who had no idea there was cash to be made

0:01:10 > 0:01:12from their trash.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15- We got £350.- Whoa!

0:01:25 > 0:01:29The Witley Recycling Centre in Surrey is the final destination

0:01:29 > 0:01:34for thousands of items that have become unwanted and unloved.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37It's also where Sarah's beginning her search.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39It's coming in here all day long, and I am like a magpie.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41If I see something in there,

0:01:41 > 0:01:43I want to have it and I want to take it away

0:01:43 > 0:01:44and do something with it.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Sarah's been given special permission

0:01:47 > 0:01:50from all the recycling centres she visits,

0:01:50 > 0:01:53and is looking for four items to transform.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56I'll give you a little warning if I see anything good.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58SHE HONKS HORN

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Right, Sarah, let's get started.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08First to catch her eye is something in Jeanette's boot.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12You having a big clear-out, then?

0:02:12 > 0:02:15- I've been having a big clear-out for over a month.- Really?

0:02:15 > 0:02:19- What are you throwing away? What are you clearing out?- My husband's...

0:02:19 > 0:02:23My late husband's lean-to, where he used to do his work.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25So I've had all sorts of things.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28- So is that just an old petrol can? - Yeah.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32I'm not likely to use it, so it can go. That's the line I'm taking.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35- I really like this. - You're welcome to it.- Really?

0:02:35 > 0:02:36It's got a lovely look to it.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38I know it's old and battered,

0:02:38 > 0:02:41but there's something about that old typography

0:02:41 > 0:02:42and all those bits on there.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44I think we've had it since about 1965,

0:02:44 > 0:02:46cos that's when we first got a car.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48Oh, really? Oh, that's fantastic.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50- Yeah, so... - And yours truly returned to work.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52JEANETTE LAUGHS

0:02:52 > 0:02:56- Would it be all right to take that away?- Oh, yes, I'm only throwing it.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Thank you so much for letting us take it away and talking to us.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02- You're welcome.- Thank you.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05What do you reckon that rusty can will look like

0:03:05 > 0:03:07when Sarah's done with it, Jeanette?

0:03:07 > 0:03:09I've no idea.

0:03:09 > 0:03:14I have seen people make animals out of little bits of metal,

0:03:14 > 0:03:17and that's all I can think of, to be truthful.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20So this is a really lovely old petrol can.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23It's got beautiful typography on it,

0:03:23 > 0:03:25screaming out from the era when it was made,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27probably '50s, '60s.

0:03:27 > 0:03:28It's not in great condition,

0:03:28 > 0:03:31but it's chunky and I've worked with these kind of things before -

0:03:31 > 0:03:34if you get it right, these can look absolutely beautiful.

0:03:34 > 0:03:38And she's got just the person in mind to take it to.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46If you like lamps made from all sorts of crazy stuff,

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Guy Trench is your man.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53Retired North Sea diver Guy works tirelessly

0:03:53 > 0:03:57with his band of happy helpers to make one-of-a-kind furnishings

0:03:57 > 0:04:01from, well, anything, really.

0:04:01 > 0:04:02I love what I do.

0:04:02 > 0:04:04I mean, every day I get up,

0:04:04 > 0:04:06I just walk across the yard, get into my workshops

0:04:06 > 0:04:07and have a look around.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10And I'll suddenly see something in the corner and I think,

0:04:10 > 0:04:13"Oh, wouldn't that be great just to do that today?"

0:04:14 > 0:04:16And how about every single day you go to work

0:04:16 > 0:04:18you're doing something different?

0:04:18 > 0:04:20I mean, it's just marvellous!

0:04:20 > 0:04:22Will Guy's passion for all things old

0:04:22 > 0:04:26be enough to get excited about the rusty petrol can?

0:04:28 > 0:04:29Hiya!

0:04:29 > 0:04:33- Oh, hi, Sarah. Lovely to see you again.- And you. And you.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36Oh, every time I come in here, I see something completely different.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39- It's a good look, isn't it? - It's a good look.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41I am a bit embarrassed to add that to it then.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43Ah!

0:04:43 > 0:04:46I just couldn't see it go into the metal skip and get thrown away

0:04:46 > 0:04:49because there is something about the typography and the bits on it

0:04:49 > 0:04:52that I thought had enough appeal to maybe go into an interior.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56It is a sort of '60s, '70s petrol can.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59I think my dad had one of these in his old Ford Capri.

0:04:59 > 0:05:04You open it up here and you pull your petrol through here.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07- It's quite a clever design. - It is a clever design. It's...

0:05:07 > 0:05:11- Keith, are you about here? - Yeah.- Come have a look at this.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Yeah, come and say enthusiastic things

0:05:14 > 0:05:16about my quite ugly petrol can.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19OK, so I was thinking, I have had a little play with it.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23What do you reckon? Not something you usually convert, is it?

0:05:23 > 0:05:26No. The lettering is nice. The colour is not that great, is it?

0:05:26 > 0:05:28I was wondering about an old headlight

0:05:28 > 0:05:29or something to come off it

0:05:29 > 0:05:32so that it ties it back in to the fact that it's come out of a garage,

0:05:32 > 0:05:34or it's car-related.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Luckily, Guy has some old headlights lying around.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39What you want...

0:05:39 > 0:05:40What you are saying is that

0:05:40 > 0:05:42if we just had this sort of silvery bit here,

0:05:42 > 0:05:44and we put that on the front there...

0:05:44 > 0:05:48That might work. And I was sort of wondering what it would be like

0:05:48 > 0:05:51if you had something coming out of the top of it, more like a...

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Something like that. But...

0:05:54 > 0:05:56- It almost looks like a sort of road thing, doesn't it?- Yeah.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59You put that on a railway. A railway light.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01It looks like petrol pump or, you know, whatever.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05I mean, realistically, because this isn't brilliant,

0:06:05 > 0:06:08- I would be reluctant to spend much more than 150...- Right, OK.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11Well, whatever we do, it will be a total one-off.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13So whoever you're selling it to,

0:06:13 > 0:06:17it's the only one in the world that looks like this.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20It's a challenge, but if you're prepared to take it up...

0:06:20 > 0:06:23- Yep, we'll give it a go.- Give me a shout when it's up and running.

0:06:23 > 0:06:24Thank you.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28This time she's left me with a real challenge.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31We're going to do our best at giving it a good go.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36It's the real mark of a maker to take on a challenging item

0:06:36 > 0:06:39and turn it into something fantastic.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41I think Guy is the man for the job.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46With a capped budget of £150

0:06:46 > 0:06:49and with Guy still to work out how to make it,

0:06:49 > 0:06:53will this petrol can prove to be too challenging?

0:07:00 > 0:07:04One item found and three still to find.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07Back at Witley, Sarah might be onto something.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10It's the plastic version, isn't it? Yeah.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12I've got a really clear idea about what I need.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15If it looks too new, it's just not good enough.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18If you can't cut it up, if it hasn't got that real strength,

0:07:18 > 0:07:21if it's flat-packed, there's just no point in taking it away.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24So I feel a bit rude, but sometimes it's yes, sometimes it's no.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28Well, how about these pine drawers

0:07:28 > 0:07:31being unloaded by Corinne and Graham?

0:07:31 > 0:07:33- Chucking it out?- Yeah.- Had enough?

0:07:33 > 0:07:37The drawers don't work particularly well, they're quite sticky, so...

0:07:37 > 0:07:39- That is so annoying, isn't it? - I know.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42It looks like a nice, solid bit of furniture, though.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44- Is it quite heavy?- Yeah. - It's fairly heavy, yeah.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46Do you want a hand getting it out?

0:07:46 > 0:07:47Got the muscle.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50I can pop it down here.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53Brilliant. It looks really solid. But as you say...

0:07:53 > 0:07:56- Oh, my word, they don't work, do they?- No!

0:07:56 > 0:07:58- They don't work at all, do they?- No!

0:07:58 > 0:07:59They are supposed to, though, aren't they?

0:07:59 > 0:08:02Yes, absolutely, it's just that it's...

0:08:02 > 0:08:04It's budging a little bit.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07- It's seen better days for you, basically.- Yes.- Definitely, yeah.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Past its best for us.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12OK. Well, I think it'd be great to have a go at it.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15I don't know if it's something that we would keep as it is

0:08:15 > 0:08:17or if we would perhaps send it somewhere to somebody

0:08:17 > 0:08:20who might cut it up and do something else with it.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23- Can I take it away and see if I can do something to it?- Oh, yeah.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26I'm here all day, if you want to stay and help.

0:08:28 > 0:08:32What do Corinne and Graham think should happen to their old drawers?

0:08:32 > 0:08:35I think she might chop it up completely.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Because with those sticky drawers, I just can't see a way around them,

0:08:38 > 0:08:42so I think she might repurpose the wood somehow.

0:08:42 > 0:08:43This type of furniture,

0:08:43 > 0:08:47people have been slapping paint on it for the last ten, 15 years,

0:08:47 > 0:08:51and pretty much nobody has a piece of old gold pine left.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54But I think it's really good to see it in this condition

0:08:54 > 0:08:55because it's a blank canvas for us,

0:08:55 > 0:08:58and I can make anything I like out of this.

0:08:58 > 0:08:59Indeed.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01And there's two men I know

0:09:01 > 0:09:03who would relish a challenge like this one.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10Furniture restorers Tom and Johnny

0:09:10 > 0:09:14just love to breathe new life back into old furniture.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19These young hotshots have only been working together for a year,

0:09:19 > 0:09:23but have already made a name for themselves with their expert wood

0:09:23 > 0:09:28and metal restoration techniques and imaginative designs.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31What I like about what we do is working with friends.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33That's always a good point.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36But just having something to start from and having an end result.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38The actual craft and figuring out the problem

0:09:38 > 0:09:42and solving the problem is what's enjoyable about it as well.

0:09:42 > 0:09:43It's done like a puzzle.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45You know, it comes in not in very great condition

0:09:45 > 0:09:48and then you get to see the person's reaction when you get it back.

0:09:48 > 0:09:49That's what I enjoy the most.

0:09:49 > 0:09:54Well, fellas, Sarah's latest find is certainly going to test your skills.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00- Hello.- Hi, Sarah.- How are you doing? - Yeah, I'm good.- You all right?

0:10:00 > 0:10:02- How are you doing, you all right? - Yeah, cool.

0:10:02 > 0:10:03I've got something really heavy.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05- I definitely need a hand bringing it in.- Cool. Let's see.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07Yeah? Come and...

0:10:07 > 0:10:10Come and see what little tip treasure I've got this time.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13Tip treasure? I think that remains to be seen.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15- Cool.- All right.

0:10:15 > 0:10:16Cool. I'll take cool.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19- Any chance you can give me a hand out with it?- Yeah.- Sure.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22Are the boys happy or just relieved?

0:10:22 > 0:10:25It's sometimes difficult to tell.

0:10:27 > 0:10:31It looks slightly better up there. What do you think?

0:10:31 > 0:10:34- Yeah.- Yeah!

0:10:34 > 0:10:36I mean it has got solid drawers, but the drawers don't open.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39This is one of the problems, and why it was being dropped off.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42- Um, yeah, things like that. - THEY LAUGH

0:10:42 > 0:10:45This one opens. And it's dovetailed. It's really solid.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48I think it's just had all these sort of trims and mouldings stuck onto it

0:10:48 > 0:10:51- to give that mock country look. - I saw that, yeah.

0:10:51 > 0:10:52I think it's kind of over to you

0:10:52 > 0:10:55on what you think you're capable of doing with it,

0:10:55 > 0:10:56or if you've got some ideas for it,

0:10:56 > 0:11:00- cos it needs help at the moment. - I think we're going to start...

0:11:00 > 0:11:04- Getting rid of the trim.- Yeah, removing this. We'll take these off.

0:11:04 > 0:11:05Uh...

0:11:05 > 0:11:09- Cheaply put together, then.- At least, you know, there's nothing...

0:11:09 > 0:11:11That can be sanded back, so we can have just the, you know,

0:11:11 > 0:11:14the nice flat front rubbed and these kind of trims

0:11:14 > 0:11:15which kind of don't really do much.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18So is this the thing that's just making it look really dated?

0:11:18 > 0:11:21- Isn't it?- Yeah. Like, all round the bottom here, that's just nailed on.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23So that should come off quite easily.

0:11:23 > 0:11:25I now have the picture of it on its legs, looking really sleek,

0:11:25 > 0:11:29a nice square, chunky-looking, plainer-looking wooden top to it.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31Sounds great. How long is that going to take you

0:11:31 > 0:11:35and what kind of budget am I going to be coming back to find?

0:11:35 > 0:11:41Um... I think it is going to be around sort of 280, all-in.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45OK, 280, and that would include some new legs for it, would it?

0:11:45 > 0:11:47Yeah, we think we can do it within that budget.

0:11:47 > 0:11:52- I'm going to take your 280 quid and say thanks so much.- No problem.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55- Pleasure.- And take care. - Cheers. Bye.- Bye!

0:11:55 > 0:11:58- All right.- Yeah. - Let's get started then.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00I'm actually really pleased how that went

0:12:00 > 0:12:03because I wasn't engaged with that piece of furniture

0:12:03 > 0:12:05and now I think it is going to look fantastic.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07Those boys have given me a good budget as well,

0:12:07 > 0:12:10so I stand to make maybe even a chunky profit too.

0:12:11 > 0:12:13I think we're going to have a lot of fun with this one.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16Yeah, it's got a lot of potential.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18There's a lot we need to remove before we can start adding,

0:12:18 > 0:12:21- but it's going to be cool, I think, isn't it?- Yeah, definitely.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23Yeah, I'm excited about this one.

0:12:23 > 0:12:29Sarah has left Tom and Johnny a budget of £280 -

0:12:29 > 0:12:33but will they be able to overcome the problem of those stuck drawers?

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Nestled in the Essex countryside

0:12:47 > 0:12:50are Guy Trench and his skilled companion Keith.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55They've got the challenge of turning an old rusty petrol can

0:12:55 > 0:12:58into motor-themed lighting.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01Sarah's dropped this can off.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03And what this is going to look like, I think,

0:13:03 > 0:13:05is that we'll set this up.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08We'll probably put something in here to hold this like that.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11And then we'll put just an electric light bulb there.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13I think that could look quite cool.

0:13:13 > 0:13:17It's quite plain, it's simple, it says petrol can,

0:13:17 > 0:13:19it says sort of, with the bulb lit up -

0:13:19 > 0:13:22an old fancy fashioned bulb with the elements going sort of down -

0:13:22 > 0:13:25it is sort of looking like fire coming out of it.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28And, yeah, I think it could look OK.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31I don't know until we've had a go at it yet, so...

0:13:31 > 0:13:32We'll have look at this.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36Certainly sounds like there's a clear plan now,

0:13:36 > 0:13:39as Guy gets to work with the wire brush

0:13:39 > 0:13:42to remove the worst of the rust and the flaky paint.

0:13:45 > 0:13:49So... We're getting sort of a little bit of colour back into here.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52We're not losing...not making this dark enough here,

0:13:52 > 0:13:56so I think a bit of Jacobean black polish might do the trick.

0:13:56 > 0:13:58We just want to dull it down a bit so it doesn't look quite

0:13:58 > 0:14:00so in-your-face.

0:14:00 > 0:14:02That's a job for Keith, I think.

0:14:02 > 0:14:03It's like magic.

0:14:03 > 0:14:07Now it's coming up to be quite a nice colour. It's now coming alive.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09You know, we're losing the brown rusty,

0:14:09 > 0:14:11we're now getting sort of darker colours coming into it.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14Yeah, look at it coming up now, beautiful. Lovely.

0:14:16 > 0:14:21My guess is it is what it is, and we're going to leave it like this,

0:14:21 > 0:14:26this colour here, and then do the electrics on it and go from there.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29In order to ensure the safety of the light,

0:14:29 > 0:14:32Guy does not tackle electrics himself,

0:14:32 > 0:14:36but calls upon the qualified help of Steve the electrician.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39Steve is quite a good thinker on these ideas,

0:14:39 > 0:14:42and so we have quite a bit of discussion beforehand

0:14:42 > 0:14:43on sort of the best route.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45I may have an idea, he may even change it around

0:14:45 > 0:14:47to something which is more practical.

0:14:47 > 0:14:50It's nice to have somebody to have feedback and chat to

0:14:50 > 0:14:55- and get it absolutely looking 100 right.- Yeah.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58- I think that's the thing, there is no right or wrong, is there?- No.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01It's just sometimes you look at things a different way

0:15:01 > 0:15:04and, you know, what with the modern materials,

0:15:04 > 0:15:07we can do different things with lighting, as well,

0:15:07 > 0:15:10so there's lots of possibilities these days.

0:15:10 > 0:15:15Steve's also attaching a granite plinth to the bottom of the can

0:15:15 > 0:15:17for both aesthetics and stability.

0:15:17 > 0:15:19But you never know, when you find these things

0:15:19 > 0:15:22you just keep on playing with them and cleaning them up a bit more

0:15:22 > 0:15:25and suddenly they start coming to life and then all of a sudden, bang,

0:15:25 > 0:15:28"Hey, that looks really good." You know, erm...

0:15:31 > 0:15:32I think, you know, this is taking shape

0:15:32 > 0:15:35and my least favourite thing now is becoming...

0:15:35 > 0:15:37I think it's going to look OK.

0:15:37 > 0:15:38It's going to look quite cool.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49In Thornton Heath, near Croydon,

0:15:49 > 0:15:52Tom and Johnny are getting started on the chest of drawers.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00- First, though, let's get these drawers out and numbered up.- Yeah.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03- Make sure we can get them out first, I think is the key.- Yeah.

0:16:03 > 0:16:05- They're pretty stuck in there. - Yeah. Yeah.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08It's well and truly stuck.

0:16:08 > 0:16:10We need to get this out.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12I'm not quite sure how we're going to do that.

0:16:12 > 0:16:13The wood's swelled.

0:16:13 > 0:16:15When it gets lots of moisture in the air,

0:16:15 > 0:16:19it kind of soaks it up like a sponge and expands. That's why it jams.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22To free the drawers, Tom and Johnny are using brute strength.

0:16:22 > 0:16:26However, too much force could cause irreparable damage.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30This was always going to be the first big challenge in this one,

0:16:30 > 0:16:33getting these out without sort of damaging it too much.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37For a better grip, Tom has devised a plan to use the screw holes

0:16:37 > 0:16:41of the old handles to attach a long piece of wood.

0:16:41 > 0:16:45This provides the boys with something substantial to pull on.

0:16:46 > 0:16:49Just give it... If we sort of do... Yeah, there you go.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53- Leverage.- One way of doing it.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56I was wondering if it was ever going to come out, to be honest.

0:16:56 > 0:16:59Two more to go - but these ones are a little bit easier to access.

0:16:59 > 0:17:00Finally!

0:17:03 > 0:17:05It's almost like an anticlimax,

0:17:05 > 0:17:07cos all it is is getting a drawer out.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11With the drawers removed,

0:17:11 > 0:17:14the old-fashioned pine moulding is taken off.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17And to prevent the drawers from sticking in the future,

0:17:17 > 0:17:20the sides and edges of each drawer are being planed

0:17:20 > 0:17:24in an attempt to make them fit and slide perfectly.

0:17:24 > 0:17:28It seems better than it was, but it's catching here, still.

0:17:28 > 0:17:31So I'm just trying to figure out if it's tight on the sides

0:17:31 > 0:17:34or if it's the top or bottom edge. It could be both.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36It looks very tight there,

0:17:36 > 0:17:39so I might just take a little bit off that top edge.

0:17:42 > 0:17:43Trying to get these drawers to run smoothly

0:17:43 > 0:17:46is basically a trial and error thing.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49You've just got to take a bit off here, take a bit off there,

0:17:49 > 0:17:51figure out where it's tightening up

0:17:51 > 0:17:53and just keep taking little bits off, a little bit at a time.

0:17:53 > 0:17:56So it can take a while, sometimes.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58There's something about a drawer sliding in,

0:17:58 > 0:18:00it's quite a weird sensation when it fits.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03Even though it should do in the first place but, yeah, it's good.

0:18:03 > 0:18:06With the drawer sliding effortlessly,

0:18:06 > 0:18:08it's time to remove all the old varnish.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12The guys are using a paint stripper,

0:18:12 > 0:18:16which is why they're wearing protective gloves and masks.

0:18:16 > 0:18:18So you need to put quite a bit of this on

0:18:18 > 0:18:21and sort of keep the surface quite wet.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23Sometimes, the polish, it'll react very quickly

0:18:23 > 0:18:26and you can take it off again pretty much instantly

0:18:26 > 0:18:30and other times you need to keep it on there for up to 20 minutes,

0:18:30 > 0:18:31half an hour, sometimes.

0:18:31 > 0:18:35Chemical paint removers are the best way to remove old paint coverings

0:18:35 > 0:18:39if you want to prevent damage to the wood underneath.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42However, they should be treated with extreme caution

0:18:42 > 0:18:44as they can cause a variety of health problems

0:18:44 > 0:18:47if not used correctly.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51With the varnish gone, the whole thing is given a final sanding

0:18:51 > 0:18:54before the addition of a very modern twist.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56It's going to really change the overall look

0:18:56 > 0:18:59of the piece of furniture having these legs on it.

0:18:59 > 0:19:01It's going to make it look a lot more modern.

0:19:01 > 0:19:07The original style of the piece was kind of Victorian furniture

0:19:07 > 0:19:09but we've removed all of that styling,

0:19:09 > 0:19:11so now it's just going to be a lot more clean lines

0:19:11 > 0:19:15and kind of more of a 20th century look.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18- Right, it's ready to stand up, I think.- Cool, let's have a look.

0:19:21 > 0:19:22That's added a bit of weight.

0:19:25 > 0:19:26Cool.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34- I think that's going to look good, isn't it?- Yeah, that's awesome.

0:19:34 > 0:19:37It's going to be really cool. Definitely a lot better than it was.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47Sarah has returned to Essex,

0:19:47 > 0:19:50where Guy has been working on the rusty old petrol can,

0:19:50 > 0:19:53which had reached the end of the road.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56Sarah brought this along to me and I have to say

0:19:56 > 0:20:00I didn't like it at all. It's one of my least favourite to do.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03But it's much, much better than I thought it was going to turn out.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06So, yeah, I think it ticks the box again.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09I'm back here to see what Guy's managed to do

0:20:09 > 0:20:10with that old blue petrol can

0:20:10 > 0:20:13cos when I dropped it off he really wasn't sure about it,

0:20:13 > 0:20:15so I'm going to go and find out.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19When Sarah salvaged the rusty old fuel can,

0:20:19 > 0:20:21it's motoring days were over.

0:20:24 > 0:20:28Now Guy has managed to turn it into stylish designer lighting.

0:20:29 > 0:20:33By polishing the surface, highlighting the patina and wear

0:20:33 > 0:20:36and with the addition of the old-fashioned looking bulb,

0:20:36 > 0:20:38he's managed to create...

0:20:38 > 0:20:41a petrol can with a bulb on top.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47- Oh, wow, Guy! - SHE LAUGHS

0:20:47 > 0:20:48Hiya!

0:20:49 > 0:20:53Go on, then. What do you think of it?

0:20:53 > 0:20:58You know, it was a '60s, '70s plain boring can and...

0:20:58 > 0:21:00but now, oh, wow -

0:21:00 > 0:21:04we've made it look like it's firing fire out of it, you know?

0:21:04 > 0:21:06We've polished it up, we've given it a good gleam,

0:21:06 > 0:21:09which has dulled down the colours here a lot

0:21:09 > 0:21:10but given it a really rich colour

0:21:10 > 0:21:12and with that rust coming through there,

0:21:12 > 0:21:15I think it just makes it look really cool.

0:21:15 > 0:21:19I love it. I think it's quirky, I think it's entertaining. It's funny.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21When you look at it, you want to smile, don't you,

0:21:21 > 0:21:23- cos it's really unusual.- Yeah.

0:21:23 > 0:21:27I love the base you've put it on and it really adds to it, doesn't it?

0:21:27 > 0:21:30I love using these bases, which I always put on my lights.

0:21:30 > 0:21:34It's granite, it's textured, so it sort of looks like antique.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37We're using, again, the old silk wire here.

0:21:37 > 0:21:38Again, it's a little touch, a little detail

0:21:38 > 0:21:40going to a decent clicker switch

0:21:40 > 0:21:44so you don't have to put your hands up here to turn the light on.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46And it's obviously got a PAT certificate,

0:21:46 > 0:21:49so it's all tested ready for one of your clients.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52The budget for this transformation was £150.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54How have we got on?

0:21:54 > 0:21:57Spot-on. No problem at all with that. We can do it for that price.

0:21:57 > 0:22:01Oh, that's great. You've created something really simple, elegant,

0:22:01 > 0:22:03really cool from an old can.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05Well done, Guy.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07I think Sarah was very pleased with it.

0:22:07 > 0:22:09It wasn't my favourite thing.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12I didn't know, really, what to do with it

0:22:12 > 0:22:14and just a little bit of thinking, a bit of playing with it

0:22:14 > 0:22:18and it really has turned out extremely well.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22Well, I am so pleased that Guy got behind this

0:22:22 > 0:22:24because look what he's created.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26It's just so quirky.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31When Sarah spotted Jeanette in Witley,

0:22:31 > 0:22:33she was having a ruthless clear out.

0:22:34 > 0:22:38I'm not likely to use it, so it can go. That's the line I'm taking.

0:22:38 > 0:22:43The rusty old petrol can was enough to fuel Jeanette's imagination.

0:22:43 > 0:22:48I have seen people make animals out of little bits of metal

0:22:48 > 0:22:51and that's all I can think of, to be truthful.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54Guy transformed it into a trendy new light

0:22:54 > 0:22:58and it was snapped up by a shop by the seaside -

0:22:58 > 0:22:59Eastbourne, to be exact,

0:22:59 > 0:23:04and the Little Chelsea Antiques Emporium run by Steve.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08Two, three...

0:23:08 > 0:23:09Yay!

0:23:12 > 0:23:15Sarah has returned to Witley to catch up with Jeanette

0:23:15 > 0:23:19and to show her what became of her old rusty can.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26- Hi, Jeanette. Lovely to see you again.- Nice to see you.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29- How are you?- I'm fine.

0:23:29 > 0:23:31I've finished my work on my conservatory,

0:23:31 > 0:23:35which was what the clear-out was all about, so I'm well pleased.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37Excellent.

0:23:37 > 0:23:41And is it right to say that petrol can was from your first car in 1965?

0:23:41 > 0:23:42That's right.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46Yeah, so it did... It did have a real retro look to it, didn't it?

0:23:46 > 0:23:47Oh, it did, yes.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49- So do you want to see what we did with it?- Yes.

0:23:49 > 0:23:53- What do you think?- I'm astonished!

0:23:53 > 0:23:55I wouldn't give it houseroom but lovely.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58THEY LAUGH

0:23:58 > 0:24:00Did you hear that? Wouldn't give it houseroom.

0:24:00 > 0:24:04Well, other people like it - an antique shop in Eastbourne.

0:24:04 > 0:24:06They took one look at it and they bought it

0:24:06 > 0:24:09and I've got a little bit of profit for your petrol can.

0:24:09 > 0:24:13- I have got £25 here to give to you. - Oh, good heavens. Thank you.

0:24:13 > 0:24:15I'm astonished!

0:24:15 > 0:24:17- Well, I'm really pleased. - That's a big surprise.

0:24:17 > 0:24:19Oh, excellent. We like surprises.

0:24:19 > 0:24:22I hope that you can find something to do with the £25.

0:24:22 > 0:24:23Oh, I'm sure I shall.

0:24:23 > 0:24:26I shall probably buy something for the conservatory

0:24:26 > 0:24:31that's newly constructed but... And I shall probably buy a lamp...

0:24:31 > 0:24:35- That would be funny, wouldn't it? - ..but not one like that.

0:24:35 > 0:24:36Well, I hope you don't mind too much

0:24:36 > 0:24:39- what we did with your old petrol can.- Oh, no, no.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42I'm pleased to see somebody's made use of what was my rubbish.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45Well, I hope you find a lamp that suits you and thank you so much

0:24:45 > 0:24:48for letting us have your old petrol can. Lovely to see you again.

0:24:48 > 0:24:50- Thank you.- Bye-bye.- Bye-bye.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52Clearly Jeanette's not a fan of rusty lighting.

0:24:54 > 0:24:58The cost of creating the motor-themed lamp was £150.

0:24:58 > 0:25:01Sarah managed to sell it for 175,

0:25:01 > 0:25:05which left £25 profit to hand over to Jeanette.

0:25:07 > 0:25:09Well, I think Jeanette was pleasantly surprised

0:25:09 > 0:25:11that we were able to re-use her rubbish.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13And although it might not have been up her street,

0:25:13 > 0:25:16I think there's plenty of mileage left in that old tank.

0:25:20 > 0:25:23That's our first item producing a profit.

0:25:23 > 0:25:26Sarah's travelled to Altrincham near Manchester

0:25:26 > 0:25:28to try and find another money-maker -

0:25:28 > 0:25:30and she's in the groove.

0:25:30 > 0:25:31Down at the tip.

0:25:33 > 0:25:35Let's get down...to business.

0:25:37 > 0:25:41And it's not long before Sarah homes in on Paul.

0:25:42 > 0:25:44- Hiya.- Hello.

0:25:44 > 0:25:46That looks like some interesting stuff in there.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48Yeah, it's just the contents of a garage

0:25:48 > 0:25:50that's built up over the years.

0:25:50 > 0:25:52OK, can I have a closer look?

0:25:52 > 0:25:54Can I have a little rummage around in your rubbish?

0:25:54 > 0:25:55Yeah, you're welcome. Yeah.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58Luckily for Sarah, Paul's having a clear-out,

0:25:58 > 0:26:02as he's soon going to be moving home...

0:26:02 > 0:26:03An old toolbox.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06So she's on the hunt for a gem in his junk.

0:26:06 > 0:26:07Lovely, I love that.

0:26:07 > 0:26:11Who'd have thought an old toolbox would catch her eye?

0:26:11 > 0:26:13- I really like that.- Right, OK.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15It's got, I think they call it "pateena" these days.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17Most people call it rust and wear on it.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20But there may be something I could do with it.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24Well, I call it patina, but it's all the same thing.

0:26:27 > 0:26:29Oh, look. She's spied a filing cabinet, too.

0:26:32 > 0:26:36I really like that. It's decorative as well as being industrial.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39They've got a certain look to them. Don't know what that look is.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41Rubbish chic or something.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43The next new trend, maybe.

0:26:43 > 0:26:46But what does Paul think Sarah will make with them?

0:26:46 > 0:26:50I'm not too sure, but I have seen some of her stuff before,

0:26:50 > 0:26:53and I'd be interested to see what she does with it.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55There's a real sense of history with this lovely old case,

0:26:55 > 0:26:59and I am loving the utility chic of this filing cabinet.

0:26:59 > 0:27:00I'm going to take them to somebody

0:27:00 > 0:27:04who makes magic out of metal like this and money for me.

0:27:05 > 0:27:10Artist blacksmith Bex Simon is an expert in manipulating

0:27:10 > 0:27:15metal into high-end furniture and bespoke metalwork commissions.

0:27:15 > 0:27:16When I went to art college

0:27:16 > 0:27:20and I was looking around to see what degree I wanted to do,

0:27:20 > 0:27:25I went into the forge and I saw people working with fire

0:27:25 > 0:27:28and the anvils and hammering metal.

0:27:28 > 0:27:32Oh, that was it. I just knew that that was what I needed to do.

0:27:32 > 0:27:37Together with husband Dave, this formidable team has the skill

0:27:37 > 0:27:42and imagination to create something special from...any old iron.

0:27:42 > 0:27:47There's nothing more exciting to come into work, light a fire,

0:27:47 > 0:27:50heat up your metal. It's very magical.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52I hope Bex still feels that way

0:27:52 > 0:27:56when she gets a load of the rusty toolbox and filing cabinet.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58As soon as I saw this, I totally thought Bex and Dave.

0:27:58 > 0:28:00I think they're going to love this.

0:28:00 > 0:28:03- What do you do with a filing cabinet?- File stuff.- You file stuff.

0:28:03 > 0:28:06- Paint it.- Paint it. - SHE LAUGHS

0:28:09 > 0:28:12- Crush it! - SHE LAUGHS

0:28:12 > 0:28:14Steady on there, Bex.

0:28:15 > 0:28:16No!

0:28:17 > 0:28:22- What's the matter? - It's a filing cabinet.- Yeah?

0:28:22 > 0:28:24It's beautiful!

0:28:24 > 0:28:28- How can you not love my cubby little filing cabinet?- Oh, my goodness me.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31- Shall we take it in and have a look? - Yes, sorry.

0:28:31 > 0:28:33They don't like my filing cabinet. I'm really offended.

0:28:33 > 0:28:35Anything but a filing cabinet.

0:28:35 > 0:28:38- I found this at a tip, you know.- Amazing.

0:28:38 > 0:28:43And if Bex has anything to do with it, it's going straight back there.

0:28:43 > 0:28:47I'm thinking classic 1950s styling here. It's got beautiful handles.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49The drawer's go in and out. Look.

0:28:55 > 0:28:56SHE WHISTLES

0:28:56 > 0:28:58I think I've broken it.

0:28:58 > 0:28:59Demand a refund.

0:28:59 > 0:29:02Oh, no, that's right, it was being thrown away.

0:29:02 > 0:29:04I can't imagine why.

0:29:04 > 0:29:08If we're going to work on this...

0:29:08 > 0:29:10Yeah, what do you think?

0:29:10 > 0:29:13..I really don't want it to look anything like a filing cabinet

0:29:13 > 0:29:16at all cos I really, really don't like them.

0:29:16 > 0:29:17I'd never have guessed(!)

0:29:17 > 0:29:24So what we can do is take out all the drawers separately

0:29:24 > 0:29:30and then go next door and just squash them in a press...

0:29:30 > 0:29:32to make them completely flat.

0:29:32 > 0:29:38We'll take the handles off, and so each one becomes like a shelf,

0:29:38 > 0:29:40so it's like an open shelving thing.

0:29:40 > 0:29:44So the only reference back to it

0:29:44 > 0:29:46would be like these handles.

0:29:46 > 0:29:49She really doesn't like filing cabinets. I thought this was lovely.

0:29:49 > 0:29:51I don't know where I'm going wrong here.

0:29:51 > 0:29:55Maybe Bex will feel the love for the old toolbox.

0:29:55 > 0:30:00Not looking great - but bags of potential.

0:30:02 > 0:30:05I'm in the bathroom, and I'm getting ready in the morning,

0:30:05 > 0:30:09and a lovely bathroom cabinet on the wall, mirror...

0:30:09 > 0:30:11DOOR CREAKS

0:30:11 > 0:30:14- It's got a lovely, like, cross... - It's beautiful.- ..there.

0:30:14 > 0:30:18It's stylish, it's got lovely, original paintwork.

0:30:18 > 0:30:22I think this is the gem and that is the... You don't have to do both.

0:30:22 > 0:30:25- You could just do one.- Could be OK.

0:30:25 > 0:30:28- Just needs a hammer. - Ease the hinges a bit.

0:30:28 > 0:30:34Yeah, hammer some of these, like, dents out kind of things.

0:30:34 > 0:30:37OK, so basically you're not feeling the love for these.

0:30:37 > 0:30:39You want to crush this and hammer this.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42Why don't I just leave you with some budget,

0:30:42 > 0:30:45a little leap of faith and I'll come back,

0:30:45 > 0:30:47and there'll be something saleable that is in profit?

0:30:47 > 0:30:51Yeah. If it's not going anywhere, we'll stop...

0:30:51 > 0:30:56- We'll ditch it.- ..and say we've lost a few hours on that. It's a no-goer.

0:30:56 > 0:31:00I think go for it, but if it reaches over 300 quid level in budget,

0:31:00 > 0:31:02then give me a call because I need to sign that off

0:31:02 > 0:31:04to make sure that I think we're going to be in profit.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06So on that basis, are you happy to go for it?

0:31:06 > 0:31:08- Yeah, let's do it.- Fantastic.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14Well, I think it's pretty safe to say that Bex

0:31:14 > 0:31:17is not keen on filing cabinets.

0:31:17 > 0:31:20They're just so ugly. They really are.

0:31:20 > 0:31:23I hope that between them,

0:31:23 > 0:31:26Dave and Bex manage to make something out of those two items.

0:31:26 > 0:31:29Otherwise, I'm just going to come back to a little pancake

0:31:29 > 0:31:31of a filing cabinet and not a lot of profit.

0:31:33 > 0:31:36- Wish us luck. - SHE LAUGHS

0:31:36 > 0:31:38With a starting budget of £300,

0:31:38 > 0:31:42will Bex and Dave salvage anything from Sarah's finds?

0:31:51 > 0:31:53Sarah's returned to South London

0:31:53 > 0:31:58to find out how Tom and Johnny got on with the pine drawers.

0:31:58 > 0:31:59We're hoping when Sarah comes along

0:31:59 > 0:32:01that she's going to like what we've done with the piece,

0:32:01 > 0:32:03the colours. I hope she likes the paint.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06I think that's the most drastic change.

0:32:06 > 0:32:09I think it's worked quite accurately to what we proposed

0:32:09 > 0:32:12we were going to do but it's always a bit hairy, I suppose, isn't it,

0:32:12 > 0:32:13when you don't know what...

0:32:13 > 0:32:15When someone hasn't seen something like that.

0:32:15 > 0:32:17When Sarah dropped off the pine drawers

0:32:17 > 0:32:19they were old-fashioned and out of favour.

0:32:22 > 0:32:26Tom and Johnny have transformed them almost beyond recognition.

0:32:27 > 0:32:31They've squared all the edges, creating clean lines.

0:32:31 > 0:32:33The dumpling feet have been replaced

0:32:33 > 0:32:36by stylish industrial-looking pin legs

0:32:36 > 0:32:39and the handles have been updated.

0:32:39 > 0:32:42Finally, the top has been stripped, sanded, bleached and re-waxed

0:32:42 > 0:32:46and the carcass has been painted a stylish teal colour.

0:32:50 > 0:32:52- Hello?- Hi.- Hey, are you all right?

0:32:52 > 0:32:54- Yeah, really well. How you doing? - Yeah, good.- Nice to see you.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56How you doing?

0:32:56 > 0:32:59- No way is that it? - BOTH:- Yeah.

0:32:59 > 0:33:01- Looks quite different! - Guys, that's amazing!

0:33:01 > 0:33:03How...

0:33:03 > 0:33:07It looks fresh and modern and really cool, doesn't it?

0:33:07 > 0:33:09- BOTH:- Yeah. - Can I see if the drawers open?

0:33:09 > 0:33:11Yeah.

0:33:12 > 0:33:14Oh, they work beautifully, don't they?

0:33:17 > 0:33:21That is a really fresh look.

0:33:21 > 0:33:24I love the little hairpin legs to make it look fresh.

0:33:24 > 0:33:27- Brought it up higher as well. - Yeah. And nice choice of handles.

0:33:27 > 0:33:30- And that is the original pine top? - Yeah.- Yeah.- Did it have...

0:33:30 > 0:33:32I can't remember what it had. Was it...

0:33:32 > 0:33:33It had the mouldings on the side,

0:33:33 > 0:33:36- which were that fake Victorian, wasn't it?- Yeah.

0:33:36 > 0:33:38So we took that right off and took it back

0:33:38 > 0:33:41and then had to quite heavily sand the top, as well,

0:33:41 > 0:33:42cos it was quite pitted and scratched

0:33:42 > 0:33:45and had water stains all over it.

0:33:45 > 0:33:48I left you I think with about 280 quid, bar fixings.

0:33:48 > 0:33:51How did you come out on budget?

0:33:51 > 0:33:53Pretty good. I think we ran over by about £10.

0:33:53 > 0:33:56Yeah, I think it was about 290 all in, yeah.

0:33:56 > 0:33:59I'm so pleased with what you managed to achieve. Thank you so much.

0:33:59 > 0:34:01- Cheers.- Take care.- Bye.

0:34:03 > 0:34:06Well done, boys. I think Sarah really liked it.

0:34:06 > 0:34:08Those lads have done so well, haven't they?

0:34:08 > 0:34:12That now looks like a beautiful crisp piece of furniture

0:34:12 > 0:34:16that you want to have in your home. Bingo!

0:34:16 > 0:34:17- It went really well, yeah.- Yeah.

0:34:17 > 0:34:20She seemed really surprised, which was good. A really good surprise.

0:34:20 > 0:34:22Yeah, she seemed really happy.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25I think she genuinely thought it looked really good.

0:34:25 > 0:34:26Either that or she's a very good actor.

0:34:26 > 0:34:28THEY LAUGH

0:34:28 > 0:34:30When Sarah first met Corinne and Graham,

0:34:30 > 0:34:32she discovered their old pine drawers

0:34:32 > 0:34:34had more than just cosmetic problems.

0:34:34 > 0:34:36The drawers don't work particularly well,

0:34:36 > 0:34:39- they're quite sticky, so... - That is so annoying, isn't it?

0:34:39 > 0:34:40I know.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43Thankfully that didn't put Sarah off.

0:34:43 > 0:34:45- They don't work at all, do they?- No!

0:34:45 > 0:34:47They are supposed to though, aren't they? It's not just...

0:34:47 > 0:34:49Yes, absolutely.

0:34:50 > 0:34:55Once transformed, Sarah advertised the drawers online - and they sold.

0:34:55 > 0:34:57She's now travelled near to Guildford

0:34:57 > 0:35:02to visit Corinne and Graham - but will she be handing over any profit?

0:35:05 > 0:35:07- Hi, there!- Hiya.- Hello. How are you doing?

0:35:07 > 0:35:09- Yeah, good thanks. You?- Oh, hello.

0:35:09 > 0:35:11- Oh, hello, Sarah.- Nice to see you again.- Nice to see you.

0:35:11 > 0:35:15I said when I saw you at the tip that I would be back in touch

0:35:15 > 0:35:18if I'd managed to do anything with your chest of drawers.

0:35:18 > 0:35:20- Yeah.- Yeah.- It turned out that we took your chest of drawers

0:35:20 > 0:35:22to these fantastic furniture restorers.

0:35:22 > 0:35:26They're guys who work in South London called Tom and Johnny.

0:35:26 > 0:35:28They had one look at it

0:35:28 > 0:35:32and decided to give it a really lovely fresh makeover.

0:35:32 > 0:35:36- Wow.- So I've got some pictures to show you how it ended up.

0:35:36 > 0:35:37- Excellent.- Are you ready for this?

0:35:37 > 0:35:41- Yeah.- Oh, wow! Look at that! - Oh, my goodness!

0:35:41 > 0:35:43No! That's not the same one!

0:35:43 > 0:35:45That's excellent, isn't it?

0:35:45 > 0:35:48That's fantastic. I can't believe it!

0:35:48 > 0:35:49Should have kept it.

0:35:49 > 0:35:52- You should have kept it.- You wouldn't have been able to do that.

0:35:52 > 0:35:54- Wow.- Do you like it?- Yeah, I really do.- Very much so, yeah.

0:35:54 > 0:35:57Hadn't really got my head round what you would do with it

0:35:57 > 0:36:00- or how it would end up looking.- So, yeah, somebody absolutely loved it

0:36:00 > 0:36:02and was really pleased that it hadn't gone to anybody else.

0:36:02 > 0:36:05- And I've got a little bit of profit to hand over.- Oh, gosh.

0:36:05 > 0:36:09- After we paid the boys, I've got £35 here...- Wow.

0:36:09 > 0:36:12..to hand over for your chest of drawers. Who gets that?

0:36:12 > 0:36:14- Shall I take that? Lovely. - Graham will take that.

0:36:14 > 0:36:17- Thank you so much.- That's very kind of you.- Oh, it's a pleasure.

0:36:17 > 0:36:20£35. What is going to happen to that?

0:36:20 > 0:36:24- Something for the garden, I would think.- Excellent.

0:36:24 > 0:36:27Lovely to see you. Thank you so much for your time today

0:36:27 > 0:36:28and that cold day at the tip.

0:36:28 > 0:36:32- Definitely.- Thanks ever so much. Bye-bye.- See you, bye.- Bye.

0:36:34 > 0:36:37Tom and Johnny charged a total of £290

0:36:37 > 0:36:39to transform the sticky drawers.

0:36:39 > 0:36:42They sold for £325,

0:36:42 > 0:36:47which allowed Sarah to hand over £35 to Corinne and Graham.

0:36:48 > 0:36:52Well, Tom and Johnny put bags of style into that old chest of drawers

0:36:52 > 0:36:56and I think that Corinne and Graham appreciated all their hard work,

0:36:56 > 0:36:58so I'm pleased they liked what we did with it.

0:37:01 > 0:37:04With another item making a profit,

0:37:04 > 0:37:05it's back to the dump.

0:37:05 > 0:37:09This time, Sarah's looking for an item to work on herself.

0:37:09 > 0:37:11- What are you chucking out? - Cardboard.

0:37:11 > 0:37:13Oh, that's no good.

0:37:13 > 0:37:15She's being unusually choosy.

0:37:15 > 0:37:18- Are you coming back with any furniture later, then?- No.

0:37:18 > 0:37:20No time for small talk.

0:37:20 > 0:37:22No furniture?

0:37:22 > 0:37:25If it's furniture you're after, Sarah,

0:37:25 > 0:37:27take a look in Adrian's boot.

0:37:30 > 0:37:33It's got a lovely pair of legs on it, hasn't it?

0:37:33 > 0:37:35More than a pair.

0:37:35 > 0:37:37- Two pairs.- Two pairs of legs.

0:37:37 > 0:37:39I see you've got a sweet little piano stool

0:37:39 > 0:37:41and something of a dressing table.

0:37:41 > 0:37:43It's been up in the loft for a long time.

0:37:43 > 0:37:47And it's really just clearing it out.

0:37:47 > 0:37:50We have grandchildren and they like to play up there.

0:37:50 > 0:37:52This makes a little bit of room for them.

0:37:52 > 0:37:54You're throwing stuff out of a certain era here

0:37:54 > 0:37:57that is appealing to people today. Lots of people like...

0:37:57 > 0:37:59It's a vintage look, I have to say.

0:37:59 > 0:38:01- OK.- Vintage is now over 25 years old, so...

0:38:01 > 0:38:03What should I be doing with it, then, do you think?

0:38:03 > 0:38:06Bringing it here and letting me have a look at it.

0:38:07 > 0:38:09Ray Miller, Liverpool.

0:38:09 > 0:38:11So it's not far from home, is it?

0:38:11 > 0:38:13They say brown furniture's making a massive comeback.

0:38:13 > 0:38:15Oh.

0:38:15 > 0:38:17And it's no surprise.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20Furniture from this era is often beautifully made

0:38:20 > 0:38:21with bags of character

0:38:21 > 0:38:26and it will last much longer than the average pine flat pack nonsense.

0:38:26 > 0:38:29Sarah's sure that she can turn space saving

0:38:29 > 0:38:31into real savings for Adrian.

0:38:33 > 0:38:37I hope that she can use them and maybe sell them.

0:38:37 > 0:38:38That's fine by me.

0:38:38 > 0:38:41It would be nice for them to have a good home.

0:38:43 > 0:38:46These are a sweet little pair of vintage items.

0:38:46 > 0:38:48The table, nice legs on it.

0:38:48 > 0:38:51It's got a little pie crust edge to it.

0:38:51 > 0:38:55And this stool was probably in front of a dressing table in the 1950s.

0:38:55 > 0:38:59Together, these are the kind of things that I'm seeing £5 each

0:38:59 > 0:39:02in a charity shop. Not great in this state -

0:39:02 > 0:39:05but these have potential to make profit.

0:39:06 > 0:39:08And, keen to maximise that potential...

0:39:10 > 0:39:13..Sarah's travelled back home to Sussex.

0:39:20 > 0:39:24Sarah wastes no time in collecting some raw materials

0:39:24 > 0:39:27for her project - and it's from another dump.

0:39:27 > 0:39:30You stay there. Back in a min.

0:39:30 > 0:39:32As a huge fan of all things discarded,

0:39:32 > 0:39:36Sarah knows exactly where to find her nearest one -

0:39:36 > 0:39:37in her own garden.

0:39:40 > 0:39:42I'm looking for buried treasure.

0:39:43 > 0:39:46If you live in the middle of the country,

0:39:46 > 0:39:48100 years ago, nobody collected your rubbish,

0:39:48 > 0:39:50so you had to put it somewhere.

0:39:50 > 0:39:53Many old and rural properties have a historic rubbish heap

0:39:53 > 0:39:56similar to this one hidden away.

0:39:56 > 0:40:01And you'll just find little pits with bottles

0:40:01 > 0:40:05and old batteries and broken up old enamel, all over the place.

0:40:05 > 0:40:08Sarah's been attacking hers for years.

0:40:08 > 0:40:10It's probably her favourite place.

0:40:10 > 0:40:13She's already got quite a collection

0:40:13 > 0:40:16of Edwardian and Victorian bottles and jars -

0:40:16 > 0:40:17but she's just a few short.

0:40:17 > 0:40:20These are the inspiration for my next item.

0:40:21 > 0:40:22Wait and see.

0:40:22 > 0:40:25Gloves might have been a good idea, Sarah.

0:40:25 > 0:40:27She's clearly got a plan for those -

0:40:27 > 0:40:30and she's set aside that old white chair

0:40:30 > 0:40:33so that she can concentrate on the table.

0:40:34 > 0:40:36This sweet little table I found at the tip,

0:40:36 > 0:40:39in its own right, it probably isn't worth very much.

0:40:39 > 0:40:41So I'm going to use my dug-up treasure

0:40:41 > 0:40:43to turn our table into a posy table.

0:40:44 > 0:40:48The Victorians had a habit of covering any available surface

0:40:48 > 0:40:50with interesting objects.

0:40:50 > 0:40:52In the spring and summer months,

0:40:52 > 0:40:56stately homes would proudly display floral blooms as posies

0:40:56 > 0:40:58from their walled gardens.

0:40:59 > 0:41:02We're going to bring the posy table right back in fashion.

0:41:02 > 0:41:04Everybody is going to want one of these.

0:41:04 > 0:41:05I certainly do.

0:41:05 > 0:41:09Oh, yes, me too, for my stately, er, block of flats.

0:41:10 > 0:41:14But, as usual, Sarah's taking things one step further.

0:41:14 > 0:41:17She's marking the position of the jars she's dug up,

0:41:17 > 0:41:20and she's going to embed them in the table.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25All I've got to do now is make some little holes in the top of the table

0:41:25 > 0:41:27for them to go in.

0:41:27 > 0:41:28I'm going to use this!

0:41:28 > 0:41:30That terrifying-looking drill

0:41:30 > 0:41:31is fitted with a hole cutter

0:41:31 > 0:41:34that you can get in any decent DIY store.

0:41:35 > 0:41:37That's scary.

0:41:37 > 0:41:41Make sure you're a seasoned driller before attempting this.

0:41:47 > 0:41:49Oh, that's perfect.

0:41:49 > 0:41:51That will definitely do.

0:41:52 > 0:41:53They look really cool.

0:41:53 > 0:41:55Next, Sarah tidies up the holes

0:41:55 > 0:41:58and lightly sands the surface for painting.

0:42:01 > 0:42:04So I'm painting it a lovely blue-black colour,

0:42:04 > 0:42:07so that when the posies are in it, they really stand out.

0:42:08 > 0:42:11What do you think, Bramble? Bram, what do you think?

0:42:11 > 0:42:14Well, Bramble's not impressed, and I'm not surprised -

0:42:14 > 0:42:16this isn't the most elegant of paint jobs.

0:42:16 > 0:42:18I'm not seeking perfection here.

0:42:18 > 0:42:20I want a really rough, rustic look.

0:42:20 > 0:42:23A really bad paint job will obviously just add to its charms.

0:42:23 > 0:42:25She's doing two coats.

0:42:25 > 0:42:28That dusty blue on the top and black on the legs.

0:42:28 > 0:42:30But Bramble's had enough.

0:42:30 > 0:42:32It's like watching paint dry.

0:42:33 > 0:42:35It literally is!

0:42:35 > 0:42:36HE YAWNS

0:42:40 > 0:42:44So what I'm going to do now is just take off all these crispy edges,

0:42:44 > 0:42:46to make it look like I haven't just made it.

0:42:46 > 0:42:50First, she paints it, then she rubs it off again.

0:42:50 > 0:42:51It's hard work, this.

0:42:51 > 0:42:53I could do with a bit of a lie-down myself.

0:42:53 > 0:42:56What I'm trying to do is imagine how it would have been worn out

0:42:56 > 0:42:59if somebody had been using it, like putting all the pots in these holes,

0:42:59 > 0:43:01and where they picked it up on the edges.

0:43:01 > 0:43:02For Sarah's final trick,

0:43:02 > 0:43:06adding a layer of dark wax to complete that vintage feel.

0:43:06 > 0:43:09So you can buy these waxes

0:43:09 > 0:43:11in all sorts of different colours,

0:43:11 > 0:43:14or you can even stir paint into clear wax

0:43:14 > 0:43:17and make your own bespoke coloured finish.

0:43:19 > 0:43:20Still bored, Bramble?

0:43:20 > 0:43:22Bramble! Sausages!

0:43:22 > 0:43:23BRAMBLE BARKS

0:43:23 > 0:43:25I knew she could hear me.

0:43:26 > 0:43:31Sarah's well on her way with her take on Victorian extravagance.

0:43:31 > 0:43:34And, with just £5 spent on wax and paint,

0:43:34 > 0:43:36it may even make a healthy profit.

0:43:36 > 0:43:40But will she actually be able to sell such an unusual item?

0:43:49 > 0:43:51At her workshop in Guildford, Surrey,

0:43:51 > 0:43:54it's time for Bex to face her nemesis.

0:43:54 > 0:43:59- Do you want to have a go at having a look at this?- No.

0:43:59 > 0:44:01SHE LAUGHS

0:44:01 > 0:44:03I really don't like them.

0:44:03 > 0:44:07If you can take it apart for me, get all the drawers out...

0:44:07 > 0:44:12- Yeah, I can do that.- Yeah, if you do that for me first days, then I'll...

0:44:14 > 0:44:18- There you go.- Oh, OK. Thanks(!)

0:44:18 > 0:44:19Nice try.

0:44:21 > 0:44:23Explain to me what you're trying to do.

0:44:23 > 0:44:25- Squash it flat. - Just the whole thing?- Yeah.

0:44:27 > 0:44:30So the plan is to make a shelving unit using

0:44:30 > 0:44:33the drawers of the filing cabinet as the shelves.

0:44:33 > 0:44:34Stomach muscles in.

0:44:34 > 0:44:36Stomach muscles.

0:44:36 > 0:44:39In the past, Bex has used her pneumatic press

0:44:39 > 0:44:40to shape and straighten metal...

0:44:42 > 0:44:46..but this is the first time she's squashed anything with it.

0:44:55 > 0:44:58- Oh, what a nice shape!- Yeah.

0:44:58 > 0:45:02Ooh, oh, look at that, that's really nice.

0:45:04 > 0:45:06Look at the way the corners have gone.

0:45:06 > 0:45:09Nice one. It's like a tray.

0:45:09 > 0:45:13- I can go and make some tea. - THEY LAUGH

0:45:15 > 0:45:17See? That wasn't so difficult after all.

0:45:17 > 0:45:19All right, Mr Tea Boy?

0:45:21 > 0:45:23Now, on to the toolbox.

0:45:27 > 0:45:29A quick buff was the plan

0:45:29 > 0:45:32to make it into a bathroom or kitchen cabinet.

0:45:32 > 0:45:34But...

0:45:34 > 0:45:36This is taking ages.

0:45:41 > 0:45:43It's working, though.

0:45:43 > 0:45:47Yeah, but it's, like... To do the whole thing...

0:45:47 > 0:45:52- Well, you've nearly done the whole thing.- Well, no, but I think...

0:45:52 > 0:45:57Look, imagine being someone who is going to buy...

0:46:00 > 0:46:04This was supposed to be a quick and easy job with real retail value.

0:46:05 > 0:46:08It looks like a piece of junk.

0:46:08 > 0:46:13Um, no, but a very artistically treated piece of junk.

0:46:13 > 0:46:16Nice sales pitch, Dave.

0:46:16 > 0:46:19Well, you know, just look at that. At the moment,

0:46:19 > 0:46:22I'm not feeling the potential any more.

0:46:22 > 0:46:27I mean, an idea that I did just have was those hinges.

0:46:27 > 0:46:33You know how the old metal hinges, they're all scrolled

0:46:33 > 0:46:36and beautiful, and they're like on a wooden door.

0:46:36 > 0:46:37I know what you mean,

0:46:37 > 0:46:42but I can see the budget just going completely out the window on that.

0:46:42 > 0:46:45I know, but just doing this, I don't think the finish is good enough.

0:46:45 > 0:46:47I think that's all right.

0:46:47 > 0:46:48Really?

0:46:48 > 0:46:50I think that'll be OK.

0:46:51 > 0:46:53Well, at least someone is optimistic.

0:46:53 > 0:46:58Personally, though, I think this one could be Bex's undoing.

0:46:58 > 0:46:59I don't like this one.

0:47:09 > 0:47:14In Sussex, Sarah's posy table needs a final flourish.

0:47:14 > 0:47:16As pretty much nobody's heard of a posy table.

0:47:18 > 0:47:20We really need to get these things in context

0:47:20 > 0:47:23to take pictures to sell them.

0:47:28 > 0:47:33Sarah arranges the flowers and places all the jars in their holes.

0:47:33 > 0:47:35OK, that should do it.

0:47:35 > 0:47:39But has she brought that humdrum brown table into bloom?

0:47:39 > 0:47:41Sarah took an unwanted old white seat

0:47:41 > 0:47:45and an average occasional table from the recycling centre.

0:47:45 > 0:47:49She soon decided to concentrate her efforts on the table.

0:47:53 > 0:47:56Now, Sarah's taken it back in time

0:47:56 > 0:47:58and transformed it into a posy table

0:47:58 > 0:48:00that wouldn't look out of place

0:48:00 > 0:48:04in the reception of a 19th-century stately home.

0:48:05 > 0:48:08Those Victorian jars she found in her garden tip

0:48:08 > 0:48:11present her bouquets beautifully.

0:48:11 > 0:48:13And their colours pop out against the dusty blue

0:48:13 > 0:48:15of the warm-looking table.

0:48:16 > 0:48:19And Sarah knows exactly who to target for a sale.

0:48:22 > 0:48:24I'm really pleased how this has turned out.

0:48:24 > 0:48:27The flowers in it look lovely and that's important

0:48:27 > 0:48:30because if I'm going to sell this to a florist, it needs to really work.

0:48:30 > 0:48:32Definitely worth embracing those power tools.

0:48:35 > 0:48:39At the dump, Sarah spotted some of Adrian's furniture.

0:48:39 > 0:48:41It's got a lovely pair of legs on it, hasn't it?

0:48:41 > 0:48:44It was up in the loft for a long time

0:48:44 > 0:48:48and it's really just clearing it out.

0:48:48 > 0:48:50Which, sadly, had worn out its welcome.

0:48:50 > 0:48:52You can accumulate only so much.

0:48:52 > 0:48:56Sarah turned the table into a stunning floral display.

0:48:58 > 0:48:59Blooming marvellous!

0:49:00 > 0:49:03It looks great and was snapped up by Sara Hughes,

0:49:03 > 0:49:08the owner of a vintage furniture store in Marlow, Buckinghamshire.

0:49:08 > 0:49:10What Sarah's done with it is really imaginative

0:49:10 > 0:49:12and I just think it's really fun

0:49:12 > 0:49:14and I've got customers who are florists who'll love it.

0:49:17 > 0:49:21And now, Sarah's at Adrian's home to surprise him with the good news.

0:49:23 > 0:49:24- Hello, there.- Hello, there.

0:49:24 > 0:49:26Lovely to see you, how are you?

0:49:26 > 0:49:27- Hi, there. I'm Sarah. - Pleased to see you.

0:49:27 > 0:49:30- This is my wife, Sarah. - Another Sarah. Lovely.- Two Sarahs.

0:49:30 > 0:49:32That keeps it very easy for me.

0:49:32 > 0:49:36So it was your things, the stool and the little occasional table,

0:49:36 > 0:49:38you were dropping off at the recycling centre.

0:49:38 > 0:49:41Had they been family pieces, or...?

0:49:41 > 0:49:43The stool, yes. The table, no.

0:49:43 > 0:49:44I set the stool aside

0:49:44 > 0:49:47and it was actually the table that I decided to work on,

0:49:47 > 0:49:49because it had such an interesting shape to it.

0:49:49 > 0:49:52I've actually got some pictures here to show you of how it turned out.

0:49:52 > 0:49:55But before I do, have you ever heard of a posy table?

0:49:55 > 0:49:57A posy table? Presumably for flowers.

0:49:57 > 0:49:59What's a posy table?

0:49:59 > 0:50:02Well, I can show in a moment, but a friend of mine told me about it

0:50:02 > 0:50:05and it is this lovely table that gardeners in big estates

0:50:05 > 0:50:08used to prepare little bouquets and buttonholes

0:50:08 > 0:50:11- for the ladies and gentlemen of the house.- Wow. Wow!

0:50:11 > 0:50:13I've got some pictures to show you.

0:50:13 > 0:50:15- Lovely.- So here is your table.

0:50:15 > 0:50:17Oh!

0:50:18 > 0:50:19Can we have it back?

0:50:20 > 0:50:23- Isn't that lovely? - It is. Oh, yeah.

0:50:23 > 0:50:26- Do you approve of its re-use? - Oh, yes, absolutely.- It's lovely.

0:50:26 > 0:50:29- It's nice to have something that is now going to be used.- A second life.

0:50:29 > 0:50:31Yes, well, it's been snapped up by a shop

0:50:31 > 0:50:33and I've managed to make you a little bit of profit on it.

0:50:33 > 0:50:35Oh, excellent.

0:50:35 > 0:50:36So here is...

0:50:36 > 0:50:39£130...

0:50:39 > 0:50:41Wow!

0:50:41 > 0:50:44For your occasional table.

0:50:44 > 0:50:47As we say round here, better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

0:50:47 > 0:50:49Lovely! Well, yes, I think it's definitely better than that.

0:50:49 > 0:50:52- That's wonderful.- It is, terrific.

0:50:52 > 0:50:54Have you got thoughts about what you might do with it?

0:50:54 > 0:50:56- Well, yes, we have. - Alzheimer's Society.

0:50:56 > 0:50:59My mother died about ten years ago

0:50:59 > 0:51:01and Dad looked after her for a number of years,

0:51:01 > 0:51:03well supported by the Alzheimer's Society.

0:51:03 > 0:51:05Well, I think that is absolutely lovely,

0:51:05 > 0:51:07and I was really inspired by your old table,

0:51:07 > 0:51:09and that's a great place for that to go.

0:51:09 > 0:51:12- Splendid. Thank you very much. - A total pleasure.

0:51:12 > 0:51:14Lovely to have met you and to catch up with you, Adrian.

0:51:14 > 0:51:16- Thank you very much.- Thank you. Bye-bye.- Bye-bye.- Thank you.

0:51:20 > 0:51:23Sarah spent a modest £5 on the makeover.

0:51:23 > 0:51:28She sold the posy table for a whopping £135,

0:51:28 > 0:51:30earning Adrian and his wife Sarah

0:51:30 > 0:51:32£130 of profit.

0:51:32 > 0:51:36Well, if Adrian and Sarah's reaction is anything to go by,

0:51:36 > 0:51:39there are going to be posy tables popping up everywhere.

0:51:39 > 0:51:41I'm delighted that they like what I did with it,

0:51:41 > 0:51:45and I'm so pleased that that money is going to such a worthy cause.

0:51:55 > 0:51:56Over in Surrey...

0:51:59 > 0:52:01..it's time for Bex to reveal to Sarah

0:52:01 > 0:52:05what has become of the old filing cabinet and toolbox.

0:52:05 > 0:52:08I was really quite pleased when I found the filing cabinet

0:52:08 > 0:52:11at the tip, but Bex and Dave were not keen on it at all.

0:52:11 > 0:52:15In fact, when I left them, they said they were going to crush it,

0:52:15 > 0:52:17and I was going to pay them for the privilege.

0:52:17 > 0:52:20Can't imagine what they've done with it.

0:52:20 > 0:52:22Oh, it has been a challenge,

0:52:22 > 0:52:25cos, obviously, a filing cabinet is quite...

0:52:25 > 0:52:28Well, it's just quite big and bulky and...

0:52:28 > 0:52:32- As blacksmiths, there's not a lot you can do...- No.

0:52:32 > 0:52:34..with that sort of material.

0:52:34 > 0:52:37I think we've managed to come up with something

0:52:37 > 0:52:39out of the two items

0:52:39 > 0:52:43that works quite well in a...in a...

0:52:43 > 0:52:46sort of wacky kind of way.

0:52:46 > 0:52:49It's one for a niche buyer, I think, this one.

0:52:49 > 0:52:51No, stop pigeonholing it.

0:52:51 > 0:52:53Don't pigeonhole it.

0:52:55 > 0:52:58So a shelving unit and a bathroom cabinet, then.

0:53:02 > 0:53:05Nothing so conventional from Bex.

0:53:05 > 0:53:08She fought her phobia of filing cabinets

0:53:08 > 0:53:12and has seamlessly brought together the old toolbox

0:53:12 > 0:53:15and filing cabinet to produce this contemporary lock-up.

0:53:16 > 0:53:20A drawer of the cabinet was squashed to form a shelf

0:53:20 > 0:53:23and the lid of the toolbox makes an eye-catching door.

0:53:25 > 0:53:31And the quirks continue on the side with these...hinge detail things.

0:53:32 > 0:53:35THEY LAUGH

0:53:38 > 0:53:41What's so funny? I actually quite like it.

0:53:41 > 0:53:43- LAUGHS:- Everything I've ever thought about you.

0:53:43 > 0:53:45Look at that!

0:53:45 > 0:53:47Oh, my word!

0:53:47 > 0:53:50What...? That is bonkers!

0:53:50 > 0:53:51May I open it? How does it open?

0:53:51 > 0:53:54- Open it up for me. - You just open it up like that.

0:53:54 > 0:53:58And then we flattened one of the drawers and just put it back in,

0:53:58 > 0:54:01- but a flattened drawer. - It is lovely.

0:54:01 > 0:54:04They are... They are fantastic.

0:54:04 > 0:54:07They look sort of alien, don't they?

0:54:07 > 0:54:11Yeah, well, it's basically based on circuit boards,

0:54:11 > 0:54:15cos it's, you know, filing and systems and stuff.

0:54:15 > 0:54:17It is brilliant.

0:54:17 > 0:54:22It's funny, it's useful... These hinges, really cool.

0:54:23 > 0:54:27Bex and Dave took on those two tip finds and won.

0:54:27 > 0:54:31What's more, they managed to do it within the agreed budget.

0:54:31 > 0:54:34I was, I have to say, a teeny bit worried

0:54:34 > 0:54:37about the crunch, crunch, sort of idea that you had before,

0:54:37 > 0:54:39so it's actually quite a relief, as well.

0:54:39 > 0:54:42SHE LAUGHS

0:54:42 > 0:54:44Well, it's not often you get a good old laugh

0:54:44 > 0:54:46out of an old filing cabinet.

0:54:46 > 0:54:47They've done a fantastic job.

0:54:47 > 0:54:50My turn now to make some money out of it.

0:54:52 > 0:54:56Paul was moving home and clearing out his garage

0:54:56 > 0:54:59when Sarah spotted the filing cabinet and toolbox

0:54:59 > 0:55:01in the back of his van.

0:55:01 > 0:55:04I really like that. It's decorative as well as being industrial.

0:55:04 > 0:55:07Paul struggled to see its potential...

0:55:07 > 0:55:10I'm not too sure, but I have seen some of her stuff before,

0:55:10 > 0:55:13and I'd be interested to see what she does with it.

0:55:13 > 0:55:16..and Bex certainly took some convincing.

0:55:16 > 0:55:19But she finally unleashed its quirky charm.

0:55:22 > 0:55:25It didn't take long for Sarah to entice Nick,

0:55:25 > 0:55:29an online retailer, into buying the bespoke piece

0:55:29 > 0:55:32to sell through his shop, Smithers of Stamford.

0:55:36 > 0:55:38This is absolutely bonkers. I love it.

0:55:40 > 0:55:42Sarah's on her way to Paul's new home

0:55:42 > 0:55:46to tell him what became of his old filing cabinet and toolbox.

0:55:47 > 0:55:50- Hello.- Hi, Paul. How are you?- Good.

0:55:50 > 0:55:52So you've made the move?

0:55:52 > 0:55:55Yeah, we're here. Eventually, yeah.

0:55:55 > 0:55:57And so from what I remember, you were clearing out

0:55:57 > 0:55:59- the garage in your old house, is that right?- That's right, yes.

0:55:59 > 0:56:03Yeah, so I loved the look of your sweet little filing cabinet,

0:56:03 > 0:56:07- and we took away an old metal box case as well.- Yeah.

0:56:07 > 0:56:10I took them to Bex Simon, who is a fantastic blacksmith artist

0:56:10 > 0:56:13who works with her partner, Dave. And between them,

0:56:13 > 0:56:16they decided they were going to make one lovely piece of furniture.

0:56:16 > 0:56:18- Would you like to see it? - Oh, yeah, I'd love to.

0:56:18 > 0:56:21OK, so brace yourself cos it doesn't look

0:56:21 > 0:56:24- quite like you might remember it. - Crikey!

0:56:24 > 0:56:29- Wow! That's...that's...striking. - Striking!

0:56:29 > 0:56:33I was wondering what you'd make of it.

0:56:33 > 0:56:35But that looks fantastic.

0:56:35 > 0:56:36And it's been sold,

0:56:36 > 0:56:39- so it's gone off to a retro vintage store.- OK.

0:56:39 > 0:56:41And I've got £40 here, which is the profit made

0:56:41 > 0:56:43- from selling your filing cabinet. - Yes, brilliant!

0:56:43 > 0:56:45- Thanks very much. - So you've just moved.

0:56:45 > 0:56:48Is there anything you think you might be using that for?

0:56:48 > 0:56:50We're looking at shrubs this weekend,

0:56:50 > 0:56:53so I think the garden's going to get a little makeover in one corner.

0:56:53 > 0:56:55Oh, fantastic. Well, if that helps to go towards that,

0:56:55 > 0:56:58then I'm really pleased. But thank you so much for letting me have it.

0:56:58 > 0:57:00It's bright and it's beautiful,

0:57:00 > 0:57:02and it's going to go on to be in the heart of somebody else's home.

0:57:02 > 0:57:04- It's lovely, really nice to catch up.- Thank you.

0:57:04 > 0:57:05- Bye-bye.- Yeah, lovely.

0:57:07 > 0:57:10Well, Bex completely squashed Paul's filing cabinet,

0:57:10 > 0:57:13but we managed to squeeze a little profit out of it too,

0:57:13 > 0:57:15and I think Paul's happy with that.

0:57:15 > 0:57:21Coming in on budget of £300 and selling for £340 means

0:57:21 > 0:57:25Bex and Dave turned Paul's old metal into a £40 profit.

0:57:25 > 0:57:28Not bad, considering she hated it at the start.

0:57:38 > 0:57:42Sarah's saved four waste wonders from the skips.

0:57:45 > 0:57:47Jeanette's rusty petrol can

0:57:47 > 0:57:49has become motor-themed lighting.

0:57:50 > 0:57:52Corinne and Graham's pine drawers

0:57:52 > 0:57:55went through a thoroughly modern makeover.

0:57:56 > 0:57:59Adrian's table took a trip back in time...

0:57:59 > 0:58:03and the filing cabinet and toolbox became a new-look lock-up.

0:58:07 > 0:58:10Well, handing over money for nothing is a great feeling,

0:58:10 > 0:58:12and knowing that we've saved something

0:58:12 > 0:58:14that can go and take pride of place in a new home,

0:58:14 > 0:58:15and maybe be loved again -

0:58:15 > 0:58:17well, that's even better.
