0:00:03 > 0:00:06- Can I have a little rummage around in your rubbish?- Yeah.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08How do you make money for nothing?

0:00:10 > 0:00:11I love that!

0:00:11 > 0:00:15The answer could be hiding in the 30 million tonnes

0:00:15 > 0:00:18of household waste we throw out every year.

0:00:18 > 0:00:22So heavy. They don't make them like this any more. Look at that.

0:00:22 > 0:00:26That's why entrepreneur Sarah Moore wants to get her hands

0:00:26 > 0:00:28on things before they hit the skip.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34I'm a passionate maker, buyer and user of old stuff.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37And I've turned that passion into a moneymaking business.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41I make new stuff out of old stuff and I sell it for a profit.

0:00:41 > 0:00:45And with some of the country's elite designers and makers...

0:00:45 > 0:00:47Say something nice about it.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50- My juices are flowing in this one. - They are going to be wow.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53..she can transform her finds into desirable...

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Isn't that stunning?!

0:00:55 > 0:00:57..valuable...

0:00:58 > 0:00:59Oh, wow!

0:00:59 > 0:01:02..and hopefully saleable items.

0:01:02 > 0:01:03That is bonkers.

0:01:03 > 0:01:07If Sarah is successful, then she can hand the profits back

0:01:07 > 0:01:10to the very people who had no idea there was cash to be made

0:01:10 > 0:01:12from their trash.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15- We got £350.- Whoa!

0:01:27 > 0:01:31Witley Recycling Centre in Surrey is the final destination

0:01:31 > 0:01:37for thousands of items which have become unwanted and unloved.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39It's coming in here all day long, and I am like a magpie.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41If I see something in there,

0:01:41 > 0:01:43I want to have it and I want to take it away

0:01:43 > 0:01:44and do something with it.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49It's also where Sarah is searching, with permission by the way,

0:01:49 > 0:01:53for three items to transform.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56I'll give you a little warning if I see anything good.

0:01:56 > 0:02:00SHE HONKS KLAXON

0:02:01 > 0:02:03Right, Sarah, let's get started.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07First to catch her eye is something in Jeanette's boot.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12You having a big clear-out, then?

0:02:12 > 0:02:15- I've been having a big clear-out for over a month.- Really?

0:02:15 > 0:02:19- What are you throwing away? What are you clearing out?- My husband's...

0:02:19 > 0:02:23My late husband's lean-to, where he used to do his work.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25So I've had all sorts of things.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28- So is that just an old petrol can? - Yeah.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32I'm not likely to use it, so it can go. That's the line I'm taking.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35- I really like this. - You're welcome to it.- Really?

0:02:35 > 0:02:36It's got a lovely look to it.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39I know it's old and battered, but there is something

0:02:39 > 0:02:42about that old typography and all those bits on there.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44I think we've had it since about 1965,

0:02:44 > 0:02:46cos that's when we first got a car.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48Oh, really? Oh, that's fantastic.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50- Yeah, so... - And yours truly returned to work.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52JEANETTE LAUGHS

0:02:52 > 0:02:56- Would it be all right to take that away?- Oh, yes, I'm only throwing it.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Thank you so much for letting us take it away and talking to us.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02- You're welcome.- Thank you.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05What do you reckon that rusty can will look like

0:03:05 > 0:03:07when Sarah's done with it, Jeanette?

0:03:07 > 0:03:09I've no idea.

0:03:09 > 0:03:14I have seen people make animals out of little bits of metal,

0:03:14 > 0:03:17and that's all I can think of, to be truthful.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20So this is a really lovely old petrol can.

0:03:20 > 0:03:24It's got beautiful typography on it, screaming out from the era

0:03:24 > 0:03:27when it was made, probably '50s, '60s.

0:03:27 > 0:03:28It's not in great condition,

0:03:28 > 0:03:31but it's chunky and I've worked with these kind of things before -

0:03:31 > 0:03:34if you get it right, these can look absolutely beautiful.

0:03:34 > 0:03:38And she's got just the person in mind to take it to.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46If you like lamps made from all sorts of crazy stuff,

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Guy Trench is your man.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53Retired North Sea diver Guy works tirelessly

0:03:53 > 0:03:57with his band of happy helpers to make one-of-a-kind

0:03:57 > 0:04:01furnishings from, well, anything, really.

0:04:01 > 0:04:02I love what I do.

0:04:02 > 0:04:04I mean, every day I get up,

0:04:04 > 0:04:06I just walk across the yard, get into my workshops

0:04:06 > 0:04:07and have a look around.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10And I'll suddenly see something in the corner and I think,

0:04:10 > 0:04:13"Oh, wouldn't that be great just to do that today?"

0:04:14 > 0:04:16And how about every single day you go to work

0:04:16 > 0:04:18you're doing something different?

0:04:18 > 0:04:20I mean, it's just marvellous!

0:04:20 > 0:04:22Will Guy's passion for all things old

0:04:22 > 0:04:26be enough to get excited about the rusty petrol can?

0:04:30 > 0:04:34One item down and two still to find.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37Oh, she's onto something, though.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40It's the plastic version, isn't it? Yeah.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42I've got a really clear idea about what I need.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45If it looks too new, it's just not good enough.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48If you can't cut it up, if it hasn't got that real strength,

0:04:48 > 0:04:50if it's flat-packed, there's just no point in taking it away.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54So I feel a bit rude, but sometimes it's yes, sometimes it's no.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Oh, maybe not then.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02But how about some pine drawers being unloaded by Corinne

0:05:02 > 0:05:03and Graham?

0:05:03 > 0:05:05- Chucking it out?- Yeah.- Had enough?

0:05:05 > 0:05:09The drawers don't work particularly well, they're quite sticky, so...

0:05:09 > 0:05:11- That is so annoying, isn't it? - I know.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14It looks like a nice, solid bit of furniture, though.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17- Is it quite heavy?- Yeah. - It's fairly heavy, yeah.

0:05:17 > 0:05:18Do you want a hand getting it out?

0:05:18 > 0:05:20Got the muscle.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22I can pop it down here.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25Brilliant. It looks really solid. But as you say...

0:05:25 > 0:05:28- Oh, my word, they don't work, do they?- No!

0:05:28 > 0:05:29- They don't work at all, do they?- No.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32They aren't supposed to, though, are they?

0:05:32 > 0:05:34Yes, absolutely, it's just that it's...

0:05:34 > 0:05:36It's budging a little bit.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39- It has seen better days for you, basically.- Yes.- Definitely, yeah.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41Past its best for us.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44OK. Well, I think it'd be great to have a go at it.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47I don't know if it's something that we would keep as it is

0:05:47 > 0:05:50or if we would perhaps send it somewhere to somebody

0:05:50 > 0:05:52who might cut it up and do something else with it.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56- Can I take it away and see if I can do something to it?- Oh, yeah.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58I'm here all day, if you want to stay and help.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05What do Corinne and Graham think should happen to their old drawers?

0:06:05 > 0:06:08I think she might chop it up completely.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11Because with those sticky drawers, I just can't see a way around them,

0:06:11 > 0:06:14so I think she might repurpose the wood somehow.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16This type of furniture,

0:06:16 > 0:06:19people have been slapping paint on it for the last ten, 15 years,

0:06:19 > 0:06:23and pretty much nobody has a piece of old gold pine left.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26But I think it's really good to see it in this condition

0:06:26 > 0:06:28because it's a blank canvas for us,

0:06:28 > 0:06:30and I can make anything I like out of this.

0:06:30 > 0:06:31Indeed.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34And there's two men I know who would relish

0:06:34 > 0:06:36a challenge like this one.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42Furniture restorers Tom and Johnny

0:06:42 > 0:06:46just love to breathe new life back into old furniture.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52These young hotshots have only been working together for a year,

0:06:52 > 0:06:56but have already made a name for themselves with their expert wood

0:06:56 > 0:07:00and metal restoration techniques and imaginative designs.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03What I like about what we do is working with friends.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05That's always a good point.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08But just having something to start from and having an end result.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11The actual craft and figuring out the problem

0:07:11 > 0:07:14and solving the problem is what's enjoyable about it as well.

0:07:14 > 0:07:15It's done like a puzzle.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17You know, it comes in not in very great condition

0:07:17 > 0:07:20and then you get to see the person's reaction when you get it back.

0:07:20 > 0:07:21That's what I enjoy the most.

0:07:21 > 0:07:26Well, fellas, Sarah's latest find is certainly going to test your skills.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34That's two items found for the artisans,

0:07:34 > 0:07:38and now Sarah needs to find one for herself.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42Just going to have a look at some rubbish, no need to follow me.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45You really are following me now, aren't you? Go away.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Go and find your own rubbish.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Sarah is in a hurry as she's spotted Brent,

0:07:50 > 0:07:51who she's met before.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54He's been back and forth a few times clearing out

0:07:54 > 0:07:57the contents of his father's house, who has sadly passed away.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00Sorry to bother you,

0:08:00 > 0:08:03I'm just wondering what you're clearing out today.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06- My parents'. My father has just died.- Oh, no.

0:08:06 > 0:08:10OK, so it's not a happy task. Oh, dear, oh, dear.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13Are you a long way through it? Have you got lots to do?

0:08:13 > 0:08:16- There about. I've got two sisters to do it as well, so...- Oh, really?

0:08:16 > 0:08:20I'm taking the day off to have a big clear-out.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23- And is it very emotional or are you getting through it?- I don't mind.

0:08:23 > 0:08:24- You don't mind?- No.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26Can't believe this - 65 years worth of clutter.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30I'm looking for things today that either might have some value or

0:08:30 > 0:08:33that I might be able to do something with rather than being thrown away.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36Not much that has any value.

0:08:36 > 0:08:37The chair might be.

0:08:39 > 0:08:40That is old, that is.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42That is a lovely original Lloyd Loom,

0:08:42 > 0:08:44actually in really good condition.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46It's something that people are collecting.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49What happens often is they go on the corners here

0:08:49 > 0:08:51and they all start unravelling, but yours is lovely.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54Would that be something that I could maybe take away and see

0:08:54 > 0:08:59- if anybody would like to own or...? - Yeah.- Would that be all right?

0:08:59 > 0:09:02- We filled the charity shops up in town, so...- Excellent.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04- We can't get rid of any more. - No, and lots of...

0:09:04 > 0:09:06The churches have taken as much as they can, but...

0:09:06 > 0:09:10I'm the last... I'm the end of the line just before it goes in there.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12So if I could take that, that would be lovely.

0:09:12 > 0:09:13Somebody might like it

0:09:13 > 0:09:17and I think it's lovely to see one in such good condition.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19Lovely. Thank you.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23This chair was manufactured by British company Lusty & Sons

0:09:23 > 0:09:25using the Lloyd Loom technique.

0:09:25 > 0:09:29These types of chairs were hugely popular in the 1930s,

0:09:29 > 0:09:32and in decent nick can still fetch good money.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36Given the circumstances, Brent probably hasn't thought

0:09:36 > 0:09:39how much his parents' old chair would be worth.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41I have no idea.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44It's not something I ever looked into, so...

0:09:44 > 0:09:47Probably I'll find out when I get back and my sisters

0:09:47 > 0:09:49wanted to keep it, but...

0:09:49 > 0:09:50Never mind.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52So this is instantly recognisable as Lloyd Loom.

0:09:52 > 0:09:57So that is a really pleasing, lovely find, and in very good condition.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00Far too good to go into the tip.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03That's another day done at the recycling centre.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06Guy will light up the petrol can,

0:10:06 > 0:10:09Tom and Johnny will tackle the sticky chest of drawers

0:10:09 > 0:10:14and Sarah hopes to breathe new life into a classic old chair.

0:10:14 > 0:10:18I am really inspired by today's motley crew of gathered items.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20But I'm going to have to have some big ideas

0:10:20 > 0:10:22if I'm going to make big bucks.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31Sarah's first stop is just outside Maldon, in Essex,

0:10:31 > 0:10:35where Guy Trench and his team of skilled craftsmen

0:10:35 > 0:10:37work their magic on old and unloved items.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39How do you get them into...?

0:10:39 > 0:10:41Speaking of which...

0:10:41 > 0:10:44I'm always looking forward for Sarah bringing me something.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Anything that's thrown away, there is a second life for it.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48We'll just see what she brings this time.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51It could be a really big challenge for me. I have no idea.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55We'll just wait and see. Always looking forward to see her.

0:10:55 > 0:10:59I hope he's still as keen when he sees what's headed his way.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01Hello.

0:11:01 > 0:11:05- Oh, hi, Sarah. Lovely to see you again.- And you. And you.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08Oh, every time I come in here, I see something completely different.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10- It's a good look, isn't it? - It's a good look.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13I am a bit embarrassed to add that to it then.

0:11:13 > 0:11:14Ah.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17I just couldn't see it going to the metal skip and get thrown away

0:11:17 > 0:11:20because there is something about the typography and the bits on it

0:11:20 > 0:11:24that I thought had enough appeal to maybe go into an interior.

0:11:24 > 0:11:28It is a sort of '60s, '70s petrol can.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30My dad had one of these in his old Ford Capri.

0:11:30 > 0:11:35You open it up here and you pull your petrol through here.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39- It's quite a clever design. - It is a clever design. It's...

0:11:39 > 0:11:43- Keith, are you about here? - Yeah.- Come have a look at this.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45Yeah, come and say enthusiastic things

0:11:45 > 0:11:47about my quite ugly petrol can.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51OK, so I was thinking, I have had a little play with it.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54What do you reckon? Not something you usually convert, is it?

0:11:54 > 0:11:57No. The lettering is nice. The colour is not that great, is it?

0:11:57 > 0:11:59I was wondering about an old headlight

0:11:59 > 0:12:02or something to come off it so that it ties it back

0:12:02 > 0:12:06into the fact that it's come out of a garage, or it's car-related.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09Luckily, Guy has some old headlights lying around.

0:12:09 > 0:12:10What you want...

0:12:10 > 0:12:11What you are saying is that

0:12:11 > 0:12:14if we just had this sort of silvery bit here,

0:12:14 > 0:12:16and we put that on the front there...

0:12:16 > 0:12:19That might work. And I was sort of wondering what it would be like

0:12:19 > 0:12:22if you had something coming out of the top of it, more like a...

0:12:22 > 0:12:25Something like that. But...

0:12:25 > 0:12:28- It almost looks like a sort of road thing, doesn't it?- Yeah.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30You put that on a railway. A railway light.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32It looks like petrol pump or, you know, whatever.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36I mean, realistically, because this isn't brilliant,

0:12:36 > 0:12:40- I would be reluctant to spend much more than 150...- Right, OK.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43Well, whatever we do, it will be a total one-off.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45So whoever you're selling it to,

0:12:45 > 0:12:48it's the only one in the world that looks like this.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51It's a challenge, but if you're prepared to take it up...

0:12:51 > 0:12:54- Yep, we'll give it a go.- Give me a shout when it's up and running.

0:12:54 > 0:12:55Thank you.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00This time she's left me with a real challenge.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03We're going to do our best at giving it a good go.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08It's the real mark of a maker to take on a challenging item

0:13:08 > 0:13:10and turn it into something fantastic.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12I think Guy is the man for the job.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18With a capped budget of £150

0:13:18 > 0:13:21and with Guy still to work out how to make it,

0:13:21 > 0:13:24will this petrol can prove to be too challenging?

0:13:32 > 0:13:37Sarah's next stop takes her from the rural to the suburban.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40In Thornton Heath, near Croydon, South London,

0:13:40 > 0:13:45Tom and Johnny turn old furniture into desirable pieces.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48I guess the reservations we might have about the stuff that Sarah's

0:13:48 > 0:13:51going to bring is whether or not it's going to be pretty dilapidated.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54Fingers crossed that structurally it's sort of sound, that way

0:13:54 > 0:13:58we can spend most of our time making it, you know, more appealing.

0:14:01 > 0:14:05- Hello.- Hi, Sarah.- How are you doing? - Yeah, I'm good.- You're all right?

0:14:05 > 0:14:07- How are you doing, you all right? - Yeah, cool.

0:14:07 > 0:14:08I've got something really heavy.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10- I definitely need a hand bringing it in.- Cool. Let's see.

0:14:10 > 0:14:12Yeah? Come and...

0:14:12 > 0:14:15Come and see what little tip treasure I've got this time.

0:14:15 > 0:14:18Tip treasure? I think that remains to be seen.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20- Cool.- All right.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23Cool. I'll take cool. Any chance you can give me a hand out with it?

0:14:23 > 0:14:27- Yeah.- Sure. - Are the boys happy or just relieved?

0:14:27 > 0:14:30It's sometimes difficult to tell.

0:14:32 > 0:14:36It looks slightly better up there. What do you think?

0:14:36 > 0:14:42- Yeah.- Yeah! I mean it has got solid drawers, but the drawers don't open.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44This is one of the problems and why it was being dropped off.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47- Um, yeah, things like that. - THEY LAUGH

0:14:47 > 0:14:50This one opens. And it's dovetailed. It's really solid.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53I think it's just had all these sort of trims and mouldings stuck onto it

0:14:53 > 0:14:56- to give that mock country look. - I saw that, yeah.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59I think it's kind of over to you on what you think you're

0:14:59 > 0:15:01capable of doing with it or if you've got some ideas for it

0:15:01 > 0:15:06- because it needs help at the moment. - I think we're going to start...

0:15:06 > 0:15:09- Getting rid of the trim.- Yeah, removing this. We'll take these off.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11Uh...

0:15:11 > 0:15:14- Cheaply put together then.- At least, you know, there's nothing...

0:15:14 > 0:15:16That can be sanded back, so we can have just the, you know,

0:15:16 > 0:15:19the nice flat front rubbed and these kind of trims

0:15:19 > 0:15:20which kind of don't really do much.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23So is this the thing that's just making it look really dated?

0:15:23 > 0:15:26- Isn't it?- Yeah. Like, all round the bottom here, that's just nailed on.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28So that should come off quite easily.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31I now have the picture of it on its legs, looking really sleek,

0:15:31 > 0:15:34a nice square, chunky-looking, plainer-looking wooden top to it.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36Sounds great. How long is that going to take you

0:15:36 > 0:15:40and what kind of budget am I going to be coming back to find?

0:15:40 > 0:15:46Um... I think it is going to be around sort of 280, all-in.

0:15:46 > 0:15:50OK, 280, and that would include some new legs for it, would it?

0:15:50 > 0:15:53Yeah, we think we can do it within that budget.

0:15:53 > 0:15:57- I'm going to take your 280 quid and say thanks so much.- No problem.

0:15:57 > 0:16:01- Pleasure.- And take care. - Cheers. Bye.- Bye!

0:16:01 > 0:16:03- All right.- Yeah. - Let's get started then.

0:16:03 > 0:16:05I'm actually really pleased how that went

0:16:05 > 0:16:08because I wasn't engaged with that piece of furniture

0:16:08 > 0:16:10and now I think it is going to look fantastic.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12Those boys have given me a good budget as well,

0:16:12 > 0:16:15so I stand to make maybe even a chunky profit too.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19I think we're going to have a lot of fun with this one.

0:16:19 > 0:16:21Yeah, it's got a lot of potential.

0:16:21 > 0:16:23There's a lot we need to remove before we can start adding,

0:16:23 > 0:16:27- but it's going to be cool, I think, isn't it?- Yeah, definitely.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29Yeah, I'm excited about this one.

0:16:29 > 0:16:34Sarah has left Tom and Johnny a budget of £280.

0:16:34 > 0:16:38But will they be able to overcome the problem of those stuck drawers?

0:16:46 > 0:16:51Having left the petrol can and the pine drawers in safe hands,

0:16:51 > 0:16:55Sarah has returned home to West Sussex in order to begin

0:16:55 > 0:16:57work on her own restoration project.

0:16:59 > 0:17:03Well, it's time for the Lloyd Loom Lusty chair to get its makeover.

0:17:03 > 0:17:07I've had a look at it and it's actually in really good condition.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10I'm not keen on the upholstery.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12But all of this lovely woven surface on here is great.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15It's got a nice bit of pattern, but there's nothing on here

0:17:15 > 0:17:17that's falling apart, so that's really good.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21In this condition, they're sort of 40, 50 quid if you're lucky.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23But I think with a spruce-up, a bit of a makeover,

0:17:23 > 0:17:27I've got a chance to make probably a little bit more than that.

0:17:27 > 0:17:32Lloyd Loom furniture is not made from wicker or cane.

0:17:32 > 0:17:36It's actually craft paper woven round wire that provides

0:17:36 > 0:17:41a remarkably strong and durable finish, smooth to the touch.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45So I'm thinking a really lovely, flowery fabric,

0:17:45 > 0:17:48all over the seat pad, then I think I'm onto a winner.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50I've just got to choose some.

0:17:50 > 0:17:54I'm not quite sure which fabric will work. I've got a few...

0:17:55 > 0:17:57..to choose from.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00Sarah has been collecting fabric for almost ten years,

0:18:00 > 0:18:04during which time she's built up a considerable selection of styles.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07This one's really unusual. I've never seen anything like this.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10It's a lovely woven fabric...

0:18:10 > 0:18:12that's quite unusual and nice and rich.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16And I think it goes actually really well with that gold.

0:18:16 > 0:18:18So this is a really easy makeover.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21All I've got to do is cover this seat pad in that fabric.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24Just take this off first.

0:18:24 > 0:18:27So let's take this, give it another cover.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30OK, so this is really simple. All I've got to do...

0:18:30 > 0:18:32In fact, I'm going to cover the whole thing.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35Because it's nicely tightly packed in there, I'm just going to put

0:18:35 > 0:18:39a new layer of fabric over the top and then reattach it to the chair.

0:18:39 > 0:18:43Sarah has chosen to place the central motif of the fabric

0:18:43 > 0:18:45into the centre of the seat

0:18:45 > 0:18:48and is securing it using a staple gun -

0:18:48 > 0:18:53a quick and easy way to achieve a professional look.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55It's all about how tight you get it.

0:18:55 > 0:18:59You want everything really tightly tucked in.

0:18:59 > 0:19:01You want it to be like patting a robust dog.

0:19:01 > 0:19:02You don't want any wrinkles.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05It needs to be lovely, tight. And when you turn it over,

0:19:05 > 0:19:07you want to know that it's going to be...

0:19:09 > 0:19:11..looking really smart

0:19:11 > 0:19:15and really neat. I think if I keep on stapling down that way,

0:19:15 > 0:19:17that should be fine.

0:19:17 > 0:19:21I'm still trying to work out what a robust dog looks like.

0:19:21 > 0:19:25Sarah's costs so far are just £12 for the fabric.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28But will that really be enough to transform the chair from rags

0:19:28 > 0:19:30to riches?

0:19:38 > 0:19:41Nestled in the Essex countryside are Guy Trench

0:19:41 > 0:19:43and his skilled companion Keith.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48They've got the challenge of turning an old rusty petrol can

0:19:48 > 0:19:51into a motor-themed lighting.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54Sarah's dropped this can off.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56And what this is going to look like, I think,

0:19:56 > 0:19:58is that we'll set this up.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01We'll probably put something in here to hold this like that.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04And then we'll put just an electric light bulb there.

0:20:04 > 0:20:06I think that could look quite cool.

0:20:06 > 0:20:10It's quite plain, it's simple, it says petrol can,

0:20:10 > 0:20:12it says sort of, with the bulb lit up -

0:20:12 > 0:20:15an old fancy fashioned bulb with the elements going sort of down -

0:20:15 > 0:20:18it is sort of looking like fire coming out of it.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21And, yeah, I think it could look OK.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24I don't know until we've had a go at it yet, so...

0:20:24 > 0:20:25We'll have look at this.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29Certainly sounds like there's a clear plan now,

0:20:29 > 0:20:32as Guy gets to work with the wire brush to remove

0:20:32 > 0:20:35the worst of the rust and the flaky paint.

0:20:38 > 0:20:42So... We're getting sort of a little bit of colour back into here.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45We're not losing...not making this dark enough here,

0:20:45 > 0:20:49so I think a bit of Jacobean black polish might do the trick.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51We just want to dull it down a bit so it doesn't look quite

0:20:51 > 0:20:53so in-your-face.

0:20:53 > 0:20:54That's a job for Keith, I think.

0:20:54 > 0:20:56It's like magic.

0:20:56 > 0:21:00Now it's coming up to be quite a nice colour. It's now coming alive.

0:21:00 > 0:21:02You know, we're losing the brown rusty,

0:21:02 > 0:21:04we're now getting sort of darker colours coming into it.

0:21:04 > 0:21:07Yeah, look at it coming up now, beautiful. Lovely.

0:21:09 > 0:21:14My guess is it is what it is, and we're going to leave it like this,

0:21:14 > 0:21:19this colour here, and then do the electrics on it and go from there.

0:21:19 > 0:21:22In order to ensure the safety of the light,

0:21:22 > 0:21:25Guy does not tackle electrics himself

0:21:25 > 0:21:28but calls upon the qualified help of Steve, the electrician.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32Steve is quite a good thinker on these ideas,

0:21:32 > 0:21:35and so we have quite a bit of discussion beforehand

0:21:35 > 0:21:36on sort of the best route.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38I may have an idea, he may even change it around

0:21:38 > 0:21:40to something which is more practical.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43It's nice to have somebody to have feedback and chat to

0:21:43 > 0:21:48- and get it absolutely looking 100 right.- Yeah.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50- I think that's the thing, there is no right or wrong, is there?- No.

0:21:50 > 0:21:54It's just sometimes you look at things a different way

0:21:54 > 0:21:57and, you know, what with the modern materials,

0:21:57 > 0:22:00we can do different things with lighting as well.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03So there's lots of possibilities these days.

0:22:03 > 0:22:08Steve's also attaching a granite plinth to the bottom of the can

0:22:08 > 0:22:10for both aesthetics and stability.

0:22:10 > 0:22:12But you never know, when you find these things

0:22:12 > 0:22:15you just keep on playing with them and cleaning them up a bit more

0:22:15 > 0:22:18and suddenly they start coming to life and then all of a sudden, bang,

0:22:18 > 0:22:21"Hey, that looks really good." You know, erm...

0:22:23 > 0:22:25I think, you know, this is taking shape

0:22:25 > 0:22:28and my least favourite thing now is becoming...

0:22:28 > 0:22:29I think it's going to look OK.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31It's going to look quite cool.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42In Thornton Heath, near Croydon,

0:22:42 > 0:22:45Tom and Johnny are getting started on the chest of drawers.

0:22:50 > 0:22:52- First though let's get these drawers out and numbered up.- Yeah.

0:22:52 > 0:22:56- Make sure we can get them out first, I think is the key.- Yeah.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58- They're pretty stuck in there. - Yeah. Yeah.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00It's well and truly stuck.

0:23:00 > 0:23:02We need to get this out.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05I'm not quite sure how we're going to do that.

0:23:05 > 0:23:06The wood's swelled.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08When it gets lots of moisture in the air,

0:23:08 > 0:23:11it kind of soaks it up like a sponge and expands. That's why it jams.

0:23:11 > 0:23:15To free the drawers, Tom and Johnny are using brute strength.

0:23:15 > 0:23:19However, too much force could cause irreparable damage.

0:23:19 > 0:23:23This is always going to be the first big challenge in this one,

0:23:23 > 0:23:26getting these out without sort of damaging it too much.

0:23:26 > 0:23:30For a better grip, Tom has devised a plan to use the screw holes

0:23:30 > 0:23:34of the old handles to attach a long piece of wood.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38This provides the boys with something substantial to pull on.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42Just give it... If we sort of do... Yeah, there you go.

0:23:44 > 0:23:46- Leverage.- One way of doing it.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49I was wondering if it was ever going to come out, to be honest.

0:23:49 > 0:23:52Two more to go but these ones are a little bit easier to access.

0:23:52 > 0:23:54Finally.

0:23:56 > 0:24:00It's almost like an anti-climax cos all it is is getting the drawer out.

0:24:02 > 0:24:04With the drawers removed,

0:24:04 > 0:24:07the old-fashioned pine moulding is taken off.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10And to prevent the drawers from sticking in the future,

0:24:10 > 0:24:14the sides and edges of each drawer are being planed

0:24:14 > 0:24:17in an attempt to make them fit and slide perfectly.

0:24:17 > 0:24:21It seems better than it was but it's catching here still.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24So I'm just trying to figure out if it's tight on the sides

0:24:24 > 0:24:27or if it's the top or bottom edge. It could be both.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29It looks very tight there,

0:24:29 > 0:24:32so I might just take a little bit off that top edge.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37Trying to get these drawers to run smoothly

0:24:37 > 0:24:39is basically a trial and error thing.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42You've just got to take a bit off here, take a bit off there,

0:24:42 > 0:24:44figure out where it's tightening up

0:24:44 > 0:24:47and just keep taking little bits off, a little bit at a time.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49So it can take a while sometimes.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51There's something about a drawer sliding in,

0:24:51 > 0:24:53it's quite a weird sensation when it fits.

0:24:53 > 0:24:57Even though it should do in the first place but, yeah, it's good.

0:24:57 > 0:24:59With the drawer sliding effortlessly,

0:24:59 > 0:25:01it's time to remove all the old varnish.

0:25:03 > 0:25:05The guys are using a paint stripper,

0:25:05 > 0:25:09which is why they're wearing protective gloves and masks.

0:25:09 > 0:25:11So you need to put quite a bit of this on

0:25:11 > 0:25:14and sort of keep the surface quite wet.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16Sometimes the polish, it'll react very quickly

0:25:16 > 0:25:19and you can take it off again pretty much instantly

0:25:19 > 0:25:23and other times you need to keep it on there for up to 20 minutes,

0:25:23 > 0:25:25half an hour sometimes.

0:25:25 > 0:25:29Chemical paint removers are the best way to remove old paint coverings

0:25:29 > 0:25:32if you want to prevent damage to the wood underneath.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35However, they should be treated with extreme caution

0:25:35 > 0:25:38as they can cause a variety of health problems

0:25:38 > 0:25:40if not used correctly.

0:25:40 > 0:25:44With the varnish gone, the whole thing is given a final sanding

0:25:44 > 0:25:47before the addition of a very modern twist.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50It's going to really change the overall look

0:25:50 > 0:25:52of the piece of furniture having these legs on it.

0:25:52 > 0:25:54It's going to make it look a lot more modern.

0:25:54 > 0:26:00The original style of the piece was kind of Victorian furniture

0:26:00 > 0:26:02but we've removed all of that styling,

0:26:02 > 0:26:05so now it's just going to be a lot more clean lines

0:26:05 > 0:26:08and kind of more of a 20th century look.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11- Right, it's ready to stand up, I think.- Cool, let's have a look.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16That's added a bit of weight.

0:26:18 > 0:26:19Cool.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27- I think that's going to look good, isn't it?- Yeah, that's awesome.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30It's going to be really cool. Definitely a lot better than it was.

0:26:38 > 0:26:41Back home in West Sussex, Sarah has taken on the challenge

0:26:41 > 0:26:43of revamping a chair,

0:26:43 > 0:26:47providing it with a classical update by using fabric offcuts

0:26:47 > 0:26:49and a little bit of TLC.

0:26:52 > 0:26:57It's a simple, easy-to-do update but it packs a punch

0:26:57 > 0:26:59because it's gone from drab to saleable.

0:27:02 > 0:27:06And the fabric hoarder in me says that if you were to make

0:27:06 > 0:27:08four beautiful little lavender bags out of that,

0:27:08 > 0:27:11that would pay for the fabric for the chair.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13We don't have time for that today.

0:27:17 > 0:27:19That's it.

0:27:22 > 0:27:26When Sarah found the Lloyd Loom chair, it was tired and dated.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34Sarah has respectfully provided this chair

0:27:34 > 0:27:36with a sympathetic makeover.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40Giving it a thorough clean and re-covering the seat

0:27:40 > 0:27:42with a classic Sanderson fabric.

0:27:45 > 0:27:47Small but effective changes that have given the chair

0:27:47 > 0:27:49a new lease of life.

0:27:51 > 0:27:53So I'm really pleased how this has turned out.

0:27:53 > 0:27:57It's a simple thing to do but it's a really good update

0:27:57 > 0:27:59and this makes it saleable now.

0:27:59 > 0:28:01There are going to be people out there who love Lloyd Loom

0:28:01 > 0:28:04and those that like this kind of floral fabric

0:28:04 > 0:28:07that will definitely give this chair a good home...

0:28:07 > 0:28:08for a bit of cash.

0:28:08 > 0:28:13Sarah plans to send photos to several antique and retro dealers

0:28:13 > 0:28:16in the hope that she is sitting pretty on a profit.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21When Sarah spotted Brent at the Witley Recycling Centre,

0:28:21 > 0:28:24he was in the middle of the difficult task

0:28:24 > 0:28:27of clearing out his late father's house.

0:28:27 > 0:28:30There's not much of any value.

0:28:30 > 0:28:31The wicker chair might be.

0:28:31 > 0:28:33- May I pull it out?- Yes.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36Brent was happy for Sarah to take the chair

0:28:36 > 0:28:39and was unaware of its potential popularity.

0:28:39 > 0:28:42It's not something I've ever looked into so...

0:28:44 > 0:28:45..probably I'll find out when I get back

0:28:45 > 0:28:48that my sisters wanted to keep it but never mind.

0:28:50 > 0:28:54Sarah refreshed the faded seat fabric and offered it for sale

0:28:54 > 0:28:57and it wasn't long before it was on its way to a new home

0:28:57 > 0:28:59beside the seaside.

0:28:59 > 0:29:04Southsea to be precise and the antiques emporium of Ian and Sue -

0:29:04 > 0:29:06Parmiters Antiques.

0:29:08 > 0:29:11Every chair we buy, we know if it's going to be good

0:29:11 > 0:29:14cos if Duke jumps in it then we know that he likes it

0:29:14 > 0:29:16so we're bound to sell it.

0:29:16 > 0:29:20With Duke approving Sarah's handiwork, a deal was struck.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22Sarah has travelled to Brackley to show Brent

0:29:22 > 0:29:24what became of his parents' chair.

0:29:26 > 0:29:27Hi, there. How you doing?

0:29:27 > 0:29:30- Fine, thank you. Yourself?- Yeah, very well.- Good.

0:29:30 > 0:29:32At the tip I know that you'd been there a lot

0:29:32 > 0:29:34and you'd got lots of things that were coming out

0:29:34 > 0:29:35- of your parents' house...- Yeah.

0:29:35 > 0:29:39- ..and that's where this chair came from.- It is.

0:29:39 > 0:29:42Now, it was a Lloyd Loom chair. Had you grown up with that?

0:29:42 > 0:29:45- Is that something you remember in the house?- Oh, yes.

0:29:45 > 0:29:48From a very early age it's always been there as far as I can remember.

0:29:48 > 0:29:51- Oh, really?- So I don't know where it came from

0:29:51 > 0:29:54or whether it was a moving in present to them or what.

0:29:54 > 0:29:55We never really spoke about it.

0:29:55 > 0:29:58There are plenty of them around but not many of them

0:29:58 > 0:30:01- in as good a condition as yours was. - Good.

0:30:01 > 0:30:03So it was well looked after and that made it something

0:30:03 > 0:30:07that was quite easy to just update a little bit.

0:30:07 > 0:30:09So it was my job to do that. Do you want to see what happened to it?

0:30:09 > 0:30:11- Yes, please.- I hope you approve.

0:30:11 > 0:30:15So there it is, to go with the lovely original gold paint on it

0:30:15 > 0:30:18we just picked some fabric that had those sort of tones in it.

0:30:18 > 0:30:19Good, excellent.

0:30:19 > 0:30:21Altogether it looks quite decorative now.

0:30:21 > 0:30:24So a lovely antique shop has snapped it up.

0:30:24 > 0:30:26So I've got a little bit of profit to share with you.

0:30:26 > 0:30:31In fact, I've got £5 and another £50 here to go with that.

0:30:31 > 0:30:34Excellent. OK, brilliant, thank you very much.

0:30:34 > 0:30:3755 quid. What is going to happen to that?

0:30:37 > 0:30:42I'm not sure yet. Might just give it to the dementia charity.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45Well, that's a lovely thing to do with that cos I know that chair

0:30:45 > 0:30:48has obviously memories for you but it's going to go into the heart

0:30:48 > 0:30:50of somebody else's house and be part of their life now

0:30:50 > 0:30:53and hopefully they'll have happy memories to go with that as well.

0:30:53 > 0:30:55So, lovely. Thank you so much for catching up again.

0:30:55 > 0:30:58- No problem.- And, yeah, that sounds like a lovely thing to do

0:30:58 > 0:31:00- with that money. Bye-bye.- Bye.

0:31:04 > 0:31:09Sarah's only costs revamping the chair were £12 for material.

0:31:09 > 0:31:11The chair sold for £67,

0:31:11 > 0:31:16which left £55 for Brent to donate to a cause close to his heart.

0:31:20 > 0:31:22Well, Brent's a very generous man

0:31:22 > 0:31:25because that was a lovely little chair to work on

0:31:25 > 0:31:27and I really enjoyed giving it an update

0:31:27 > 0:31:31and raising that little bit of money that's going to a good cause.

0:31:35 > 0:31:39Time now to see how our artisans have been getting on.

0:31:39 > 0:31:42Sarah has returned to Essex where Guy has been working on

0:31:42 > 0:31:46the rusty old petrol can, which had reached the end of the road.

0:31:48 > 0:31:50Sarah bought this along to me and I have to say

0:31:50 > 0:31:53I didn't like it at all. It's one of my least favourite to do.

0:31:53 > 0:31:57But it's much, much better than I thought it was going to turn out.

0:31:57 > 0:32:00So, yeah, I think it ticks the box again.

0:32:01 > 0:32:03I'm back here to see what Guy's managed to do

0:32:03 > 0:32:04with that old blue petrol can

0:32:04 > 0:32:07cos when I dropped it off he really wasn't sure about it,

0:32:07 > 0:32:09so I'm going to go and find out.

0:32:10 > 0:32:13When Sarah salvaged the rusty old fuel can,

0:32:13 > 0:32:15it's motoring days were over.

0:32:18 > 0:32:22Now Guy has managed to turn it into stylish designer lighting.

0:32:23 > 0:32:27By polishing the surface, highlighting the patina and wear

0:32:27 > 0:32:30and with the addition of the old-fashioned looking bulb,

0:32:30 > 0:32:32he's managed to create...

0:32:32 > 0:32:34a petrol can with a bulb on top.

0:32:38 > 0:32:40- Oh, wow, Guy! - SHE LAUGHS

0:32:40 > 0:32:42Hiya!

0:32:43 > 0:32:46Go on, then. What do you think of it?

0:32:46 > 0:32:51You know, it was a '60s, '70s plain boring can and...

0:32:51 > 0:32:53but now, oh, wow -

0:32:53 > 0:32:58we've made it look like it's firing fire out of it, you know.

0:32:58 > 0:33:00We've polished it up, we've given it a good gleam,

0:33:00 > 0:33:02which has dulled down the colours here a lot

0:33:02 > 0:33:04but given it a really rich colour

0:33:04 > 0:33:06and with that rust coming through there,

0:33:06 > 0:33:09I think it just makes it look really cool.

0:33:09 > 0:33:13I love it. I think it's quirky, I think it's entertaining. It's funny.

0:33:13 > 0:33:15When you look at it, you want to smile, don't you,

0:33:15 > 0:33:17- cos it's really unusual.- Yeah.

0:33:17 > 0:33:21I love the base you've put it on and it really adds to it, doesn't it?

0:33:21 > 0:33:23I love using these bases, which I always put on my lights.

0:33:23 > 0:33:27It's granite, it's textured, so it sort of looks like antique.

0:33:27 > 0:33:30We're using again the old silk wire here.

0:33:30 > 0:33:32Again, it's a little touch, a little detail

0:33:32 > 0:33:34going to a decent clicker switch

0:33:34 > 0:33:37so you don't have to put your hands up here to turn the light on.

0:33:38 > 0:33:40And it's obviously got a PAT certificate,

0:33:40 > 0:33:42so it's all tested ready for one of your clients.

0:33:42 > 0:33:46The budget for this transformation was £150.

0:33:46 > 0:33:48How have we got on?

0:33:48 > 0:33:51Spot-on. No problem at all with that. We can do it for that price.

0:33:51 > 0:33:54Oh, that's great. You've created something really simple, elegant,

0:33:54 > 0:33:57really cool from an old can.

0:33:57 > 0:33:58Well done, Guy.

0:33:58 > 0:34:00I think Sarah was very pleased with it.

0:34:00 > 0:34:03It wasn't my favourite thing.

0:34:03 > 0:34:06I didn't know really what to do with it

0:34:06 > 0:34:08and just a little bit of thinking, a bit of playing with it

0:34:08 > 0:34:11and it really has turned out extremely well.

0:34:13 > 0:34:15Well, I am so pleased that Guy got behind this

0:34:15 > 0:34:17because look what he's created.

0:34:17 > 0:34:19It's just so quirky.

0:34:22 > 0:34:24When Sarah spotted Jeanette in Witley,

0:34:24 > 0:34:27she was having a ruthless clear out.

0:34:28 > 0:34:32I'm not likely to use it, so it can go. That's the line I'm taking.

0:34:32 > 0:34:36The rusty old petrol can was enough to fuel Jeanette's imagination.

0:34:36 > 0:34:42I have seen people make animals out of little bits of metal

0:34:42 > 0:34:45and that's all I can think of, to be truthful.

0:34:45 > 0:34:47Guy made it into a trendy new light

0:34:47 > 0:34:50and it soon followed in the footsteps of the woven chair

0:34:50 > 0:34:52to the seaside.

0:34:52 > 0:34:54This time it was Eastbourne

0:34:54 > 0:34:56and the Little Chelsea Antiques Emporium

0:34:56 > 0:34:57run by Steve.

0:34:59 > 0:35:01Two, three...

0:35:01 > 0:35:02Yay!

0:35:06 > 0:35:09Sarah has returned to Witley to catch up with Jeanette

0:35:09 > 0:35:12and to show her what became of her old rusty can.

0:35:16 > 0:35:20- Hi, Jeanette. Lovely to see you again.- Nice to see you.

0:35:20 > 0:35:22- How are you?- I'm fine.

0:35:22 > 0:35:25I've finished my work on my conservatory,

0:35:25 > 0:35:30- which was what the clear-out was all about, so I'm pleased.- Excellent.

0:35:30 > 0:35:35And is it right to say that petrol can was from your first car in 1965?

0:35:35 > 0:35:36That's right.

0:35:36 > 0:35:40Yeah, so it did... It did have a real retro look to it, didn't it?

0:35:40 > 0:35:41Oh, it did, yes.

0:35:41 > 0:35:43- So do you want to see what we did with it?- Yes.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46- What do you think?- I'm astonished!

0:35:46 > 0:35:49I wouldn't give it houseroom but lovely.

0:35:49 > 0:35:52THEY LAUGH

0:35:52 > 0:35:54Did you hear that? Wouldn't give it houseroom.

0:35:54 > 0:35:58Well, other people like it - an antique shop in Eastbourne.

0:35:58 > 0:36:00They took one look at it and they bought it

0:36:00 > 0:36:03and I've got a little bit of profit for your petrol can.

0:36:03 > 0:36:07- I have got £25 here to give to you. - Oh, good heavens. Thank you.

0:36:07 > 0:36:08I'm astonished.

0:36:08 > 0:36:10- Well, I'm really pleased. - That's a big surprise.

0:36:10 > 0:36:12Oh, excellent. We like surprises.

0:36:12 > 0:36:16I hope that you can find something to do with the £25.

0:36:16 > 0:36:17Oh, I'm sure I shall.

0:36:17 > 0:36:20I shall probably buy something for the conservatory

0:36:20 > 0:36:25that's newly constructed but... And I shall probably buy a lamp...

0:36:25 > 0:36:28- That would be funny, wouldn't it? - ..but not one like that.

0:36:28 > 0:36:30Well, I hope you don't mind too much

0:36:30 > 0:36:32- what we did with your old petrol can.- Oh, no, no.

0:36:32 > 0:36:36I'm pleased to see somebody's made use of what was my rubbish.

0:36:36 > 0:36:38Well, I hope you find a lamp that suits you and thank you so much

0:36:38 > 0:36:41for letting us have your old petrol can. Lovely to see you again.

0:36:41 > 0:36:43- Thank you.- Bye-bye.- Bye-bye.

0:36:43 > 0:36:46Clearly Jeanette's not a fan of rusty lighting.

0:36:47 > 0:36:52The cost of creating the motor-themed lamp was £150.

0:36:52 > 0:36:55Sarah managed to sell it for 175,

0:36:55 > 0:36:59which left £25 profit to hand over to Jeanette.

0:37:01 > 0:37:03Well, I think Jeanette was pleasantly surprised

0:37:03 > 0:37:05that we were able to re-use her rubbish.

0:37:05 > 0:37:07And although it might not have been up her street,

0:37:07 > 0:37:10I think there's plenty of mileage left in that old tank.

0:37:14 > 0:37:17Sarah's returned to South London on a roll,

0:37:17 > 0:37:20having achieved a profit from the first two items.

0:37:20 > 0:37:23She's here to find out how Tom and Johnny have got on

0:37:23 > 0:37:26with the old pine drawers.

0:37:26 > 0:37:28We're hoping when Sarah comes along that she's going to like

0:37:28 > 0:37:31what we've done with the piece, the colours. I hope she likes the paint.

0:37:31 > 0:37:34I think that's the most drastic change.

0:37:34 > 0:37:37I think it's worked quite accurately to what we proposed

0:37:37 > 0:37:40we were going to do but it's always a bit hairy, I suppose, isn't it,

0:37:40 > 0:37:41when you don't know what...

0:37:41 > 0:37:43When someone hasn't seen something like that.

0:37:43 > 0:37:45When Sarah dropped off the pine drawers

0:37:45 > 0:37:47they were old-fashioned and out of favour.

0:37:51 > 0:37:54Tom and Johnny have transformed them almost beyond recognition.

0:37:56 > 0:37:59They've squared all the edges, creating clean lines.

0:37:59 > 0:38:01The dumpling feet have been replaced

0:38:01 > 0:38:04by stylish industrial-looking pin legs

0:38:04 > 0:38:07and the handles have been updated.

0:38:07 > 0:38:11Finally, the top has been stripped, sanded, bleached and re-waxed

0:38:11 > 0:38:15and the carcass has been painted a stylish teal colour.

0:38:18 > 0:38:20- Hello?- Hi.- Hey, are you all right?

0:38:20 > 0:38:23- Yeah, really well. How you doing? - Yeah, good.- Nice to see you.

0:38:23 > 0:38:24How you doing?

0:38:24 > 0:38:27- No way is that it?- BOTH:- Yeah.

0:38:27 > 0:38:29Guys, that's amazing.

0:38:29 > 0:38:31How...

0:38:31 > 0:38:35It looks fresh and modern and really cool, doesn't it?

0:38:35 > 0:38:38- BOTH:- Yeah.- Can I see if the drawers open?

0:38:38 > 0:38:39Yeah.

0:38:40 > 0:38:42Oh, they work beautifully, don't they?

0:38:46 > 0:38:49That is a really fresh look.

0:38:49 > 0:38:52I love the little hairpin legs to make it look fresh.

0:38:52 > 0:38:55- Brought it up higher as well. - Yeah. And nice choice of handles.

0:38:55 > 0:38:58- And that is the original pine top? - Yeah.- Yeah.- Did it have...

0:38:58 > 0:39:00I can't remember what it had. Was it...

0:39:00 > 0:39:03It had the mouldings on the side, which were that fake Victorian,

0:39:03 > 0:39:06- wasn't it?- Yeah. So we took that right off and took it back

0:39:06 > 0:39:09and then had to quite heavily sand the top as well

0:39:09 > 0:39:11cos it was quite pitted and scratched

0:39:11 > 0:39:13and had water stains all over it.

0:39:13 > 0:39:17I left you I think with about 280 quid, bar fixings.

0:39:17 > 0:39:19How did you come out on budget?

0:39:19 > 0:39:21Pretty good. I think we ran over by about £10.

0:39:21 > 0:39:24Yeah, I think it was about 290 all in, yeah.

0:39:24 > 0:39:27I'm so pleased with what you managed to achieve. Thank you so much.

0:39:27 > 0:39:29- Cheers.- Take care.- Bye.

0:39:31 > 0:39:34Well done, boys. I think Sarah really liked it.

0:39:34 > 0:39:37Those lads have done so well, haven't they?

0:39:37 > 0:39:40That now looks like a beautiful crisp piece of furniture

0:39:40 > 0:39:44that you want to have in your home. Bingo!

0:39:44 > 0:39:45- It went really well, yeah.- Yeah.

0:39:45 > 0:39:48She seemed really surprised, which was good. A really good surprise.

0:39:48 > 0:39:50Yeah, she seemed really happy.

0:39:50 > 0:39:53I think she genuinely thought it looked really good.

0:39:53 > 0:39:55Either that or she's a very good actor.

0:39:55 > 0:39:56THEY LAUGH

0:39:56 > 0:39:58When Sarah first met Corinne and Graham,

0:39:58 > 0:40:00she discovered their old pine drawers

0:40:00 > 0:40:02had more than just cosmetic problems.

0:40:02 > 0:40:04The drawers don't work particularly well,

0:40:04 > 0:40:07- they're quite sticky, so... - That is so annoying, isn't it?

0:40:07 > 0:40:09I know.

0:40:09 > 0:40:11Thankfully that didn't put Sarah off.

0:40:11 > 0:40:13- They don't work at all, do they?- No!

0:40:13 > 0:40:16They are supposed to though, aren't they? It's not just...

0:40:16 > 0:40:17Yes, absolutely.

0:40:18 > 0:40:23Once transformed, Sarah advertised the drawers online and they sold.

0:40:23 > 0:40:25She's now travelled near to Guildford

0:40:25 > 0:40:30to visit Corinne and Graham but will she be handing over any profit?

0:40:34 > 0:40:36- Hi, there!- Hiya.- Hello. How are you doing?

0:40:36 > 0:40:37- Yeah, good thanks. You?- Oh, hello.

0:40:37 > 0:40:39- Oh, hello, Sarah.- Nice to see you again.- Nice to see you.

0:40:39 > 0:40:43I said when I saw you at the tip that I would be back in touch

0:40:43 > 0:40:46if I'd managed to do anything with your chest of drawers.

0:40:46 > 0:40:48- Yeah.- Yeah.- It turned out that we took your chest of drawers

0:40:48 > 0:40:50to these fantastic furniture restorers.

0:40:50 > 0:40:54They're guys who work in south London called Tom and Johnny.

0:40:54 > 0:40:58They had one look at it and decided to give it

0:40:58 > 0:41:00a really lovely fresh makeover.

0:41:00 > 0:41:04- Wow.- So I've got some pictures to show you how it ended up.

0:41:04 > 0:41:06- Excellent.- Are you ready for this?

0:41:06 > 0:41:09- Yeah.- Oh, wow! Look at that! - Oh, my goodness!

0:41:09 > 0:41:11No! That's not the same one!

0:41:11 > 0:41:13That's excellent, isn't it?

0:41:13 > 0:41:16That's fantastic. I can't believe it!
