0:00:03 > 0:00:05What are you chucking out today, then?

0:00:06 > 0:00:09How do you make money for nothing?

0:00:09 > 0:00:11Don't throw them, don't throw them.

0:00:11 > 0:00:14The answer could be hiding in the 30 million tonnes

0:00:14 > 0:00:17of household waste we throw out every year.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19Thanks so much for letting me have that.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22That's absolutely made my day. I love it.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25That's why entrepreneur Sarah Moore wants to get her hands on things

0:00:25 > 0:00:28before they hit the skip.

0:00:31 > 0:00:34I'm a passionate buyer, maker and user of old stuff.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37I turned that passion into a moneymaking business.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40I make new stuff out of old stuff, and I sell it for a profit.

0:00:42 > 0:00:46And with some of the country's elite designers and makers...

0:00:46 > 0:00:48What do you reckon to that? It's quite smart, isn't it?

0:00:48 > 0:00:50- Tell me you love it.- I love it.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53..she can transform her finds into desirable...

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Isn't it amazing?

0:00:55 > 0:00:58- ..valuable... - It's quite a statement piece!

0:00:58 > 0:01:01..and hopefully saleable items.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04I'll take you down to the till. That's fantastic.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06If Sarah is successful,

0:01:06 > 0:01:10then she can hand the profits back to the very people who had no idea

0:01:10 > 0:01:14there was cash to be made from their trash.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16Wow, that's amazing.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29Witley Recycling Centre in Surrey

0:01:29 > 0:01:32is a veritable smorgasbord of unloved,

0:01:32 > 0:01:34smashed-up items.

0:01:34 > 0:01:38The range of rubbish coming in here today is fantastic.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41From a bed that's been living in the shed to a chest that's well past its best.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44If I can see potential profit, I'm on it.

0:01:45 > 0:01:50Sarah, who's been granted special permission to be here at Witley,

0:01:50 > 0:01:54is on the hunt for three items from which she can turn a profit.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59It's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01If you say so, Sarah.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03I can think of a few things I'd rather be doing.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06It's not long before Sarah, eagle-eyed as ever,

0:02:06 > 0:02:10spots Vivian unloading the boot of his car.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16- Hello.- Hi.- Is it a new heating system?

0:02:16 > 0:02:18It looks like the remnants of an old one to me.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20Yes, more or less, yes.

0:02:20 > 0:02:21I love copper piping.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24Well, I know copper piping is worth something.

0:02:24 > 0:02:25It's worth something to me,

0:02:25 > 0:02:29because I love the way that even I can use the compression joints and

0:02:29 > 0:02:33things to join it together. Would it be OK if, instead of tipping it,

0:02:33 > 0:02:36to let me have it, so I can see if I can do something with it?

0:02:36 > 0:02:41Yeah, I don't mind where it goes. My wife's Danish. Over there, they do all sorts of architectural things

0:02:41 > 0:02:44in their gardens with all this piping and all that waste stuff.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48Yeah, yeah. I love the way it ages and how it looks and you can polish

0:02:48 > 0:02:52it up or leave it like this. And it makes great things, like lighting.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55You're welcome. I'd like to see the finished result.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59Definitely. If it's OK, I'll keep in touch and show you what I've made.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03- I hope I do it justice, cos it looks like there's a bundle of it here. - Jolly good, OK.

0:03:03 > 0:03:04- Thank you.- Fine.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06There's a lot to live up to with this find,

0:03:06 > 0:03:11what with Vivian being so familiar with recycled copper cast-offs.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15He's bound to have some suggestions for what could be done with them.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Well, I think she was going to do some artistic work, was she not?

0:03:19 > 0:03:20Is that the idea?

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Vivian, we haven't a clue.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27I love the fact with copper pipe you get all of these joints,

0:03:27 > 0:03:31these compression joints. So, even I can use it like a massive Meccano

0:03:31 > 0:03:34set. So, I think, if this is turned into a lovely,

0:03:34 > 0:03:38luxury interior design item, there's a profit to be made too.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42It's going to take a lot of imagination

0:03:42 > 0:03:45to transform that collection of pipes.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48Fortunately, Sarah knows just the people.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58Say hello to Josh and Ollie.

0:03:58 > 0:04:03Designer-makers, business partners and best friends.

0:04:03 > 0:04:08These boys use naturally recycled materials to create handcrafted

0:04:08 > 0:04:11furniture and high-end interior pieces.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17I definitely love what we do.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19I think we're really lucky in that sense.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24I think what makes us different is that we have got original ideas and

0:04:24 > 0:04:27we have got our own style to bring to the table.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29Josh's background is in woodwork,

0:04:29 > 0:04:31but my background is in graphic design.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35It's a really nice combination and I think we've got some pretty crazy

0:04:35 > 0:04:37ideas and we think quite out of the box.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Yes, I think it does make us stand out from the rest.

0:04:41 > 0:04:46They do say that two heads are better than one, which is good news,

0:04:46 > 0:04:49as it's going to take some serious brainpower

0:04:49 > 0:04:51to make anything with this little lot.

0:04:57 > 0:05:02With one item already found, Sarah is still on the hunt for two more.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04There's plenty to choose from.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08And you never can tell what might just turn up next.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11You could guess 1,000 times and you'd still never get there.

0:05:11 > 0:05:12Oh, it's a Resusci Annie!

0:05:12 > 0:05:14It is a Resusci Annie. A very old one.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16Oh, look, extra faces.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18Fantastic.

0:05:21 > 0:05:22As the search continues,

0:05:22 > 0:05:25it's not long before Sarah spots

0:05:25 > 0:05:29something special weighing down the back of another Sarah's car.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34- Hello.- Hello.- Are those your floorboards?

0:05:34 > 0:05:35They are my floorboards.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37Wow, you've got loads of them.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39So, what kind of age of house are they coming out of?

0:05:39 > 0:05:42This part of the house is probably not that old.

0:05:42 > 0:05:43Maybe about 50-odd years.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47OK. So, that's why they haven't got loads of worm in them.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49You've got so many of them,

0:05:49 > 0:05:51it looks like such a good supply of wood.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54It would be great to take a couple away and see if I can re-use them and

0:05:54 > 0:05:58- even make some furniture out of them.- That'd be fantastic. You can have as many as you like.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00Any ideas what I might make out of them?

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Er...

0:06:02 > 0:06:03I don't know.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05I hope it's something more exciting than a table.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09- I was just thinking it's got "table" written all over it, hasn't it? - Yeah, I was just thinking that.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11It depends how good a table it is.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15Well, I suppose. In my head, it doesn't look very exciting.

0:06:16 > 0:06:18Well, I really appreciate you

0:06:18 > 0:06:21letting me have so much of it and I'll try and think of something

0:06:21 > 0:06:23more impressive than a table!

0:06:23 > 0:06:26I'm so pleased I was here just when you were going to throw those away.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29- That's all right.- So, I shall wheel them off and take them to my store.

0:06:29 > 0:06:30Thank you so much.

0:06:30 > 0:06:35There's so much for Sarah to work with and plenty of potential,

0:06:35 > 0:06:38but what would the other Sarah really like to see?

0:06:38 > 0:06:40Something lovely would be fantastic.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44We talked about tables, but that's not particularly exciting.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47But anything is better than just being thrown.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Now, there is enough wood here to make pretty much anything.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54So, that choice, you know, it's a bit mind-boggling.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57I think it would make the most amazing, beautiful, massive table.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00There's something really impressive about something that big.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02Loads of people keep money under the floorboards,

0:07:02 > 0:07:04I think I'm going to make money FROM the floorboards.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08There's so many possibilities.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11It sounds like we need to involve an expert.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16With over 25 years' experience

0:07:16 > 0:07:18building furniture, if you've got wood,

0:07:18 > 0:07:21Norman Wilkinson's your man.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24I love the timber, I love the finishing of it,

0:07:24 > 0:07:25I love the product.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27It's everything, it makes me tick.

0:07:27 > 0:07:28Yeah, there is a passion for it,

0:07:28 > 0:07:32because there's no point getting up in the morning and not doing something you don't like.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35Coming in and then picking up the wood and turning it into

0:07:35 > 0:07:38something lovely...you know, makes me happy.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41Norman's passion is creating handmade,

0:07:41 > 0:07:44bespoke furniture from reclaimed,

0:07:44 > 0:07:45unwanted materials.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48And also using second-hand materials,

0:07:48 > 0:07:51I think it's a great joy. It's the old saying, isn't it?

0:07:51 > 0:07:53Another man's rubbish is another man's...

0:07:53 > 0:07:55I can't think of the saying now!

0:07:58 > 0:08:00Well, he may also struggle for words

0:08:00 > 0:08:02when he sees the salvaged floorboards

0:08:02 > 0:08:04Sarah has secured.

0:08:13 > 0:08:15Sarah has only one item left to find.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18An item which she can work on herself.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20Oh, wow, look at that.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25My luck is definitely about to change.

0:08:25 > 0:08:26Look at that, an old one as well.

0:08:26 > 0:08:271963.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29Right, come on.

0:08:29 > 0:08:30Lucky penny.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35I think that luck is about to pay off,

0:08:35 > 0:08:37as in the back of Richard's car

0:08:37 > 0:08:39lurks a plastic heron -

0:08:39 > 0:08:42the sort used to deter other herons from a pond.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45Now, that's amazing.

0:08:45 > 0:08:46You can't throw that away.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48Oh, yes. They don't work.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50- Have you had it by the fish pond? - Yes, yes -

0:08:50 > 0:08:51I bought it many years ago.

0:08:53 > 0:08:54The heron is quite a bright bird.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58It soon learns that there is no danger from this.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01- Oh, really?- Yes. It might work for a few weeks, but it...

0:09:01 > 0:09:03No, they're too wise for it.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06It's actually been sitting in my garage for a number of years,

0:09:06 > 0:09:11- unused.- Waiting for me, because I think I can do something with this.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13All right! Well, good on you.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15It doesn't involve a fish pond.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18- All right.- So, if it would be all right to have it

0:09:18 > 0:09:20and save it from the tip

0:09:20 > 0:09:23and I think he and I are going to have a lovely time together.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25Good!

0:09:25 > 0:09:28- Thank you ever so much for letting me have him.- My pleasure!

0:09:28 > 0:09:30I shall hopefully keep in touch and show you what I've done.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32- OK.- Thanks ever so much.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34Now, what is she going to do with THAT?

0:09:34 > 0:09:36It seems to me the perfect idea of recycling.

0:09:36 > 0:09:40I don't need it, so somebody else can use it and make something of it,

0:09:40 > 0:09:41that's fine by me.

0:09:43 > 0:09:44I LOVE my new friend.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46What do you think - attractive?

0:09:46 > 0:09:50He's definitely been around a bit, cos I know this would have been all coloured up and stuff.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52But I think because he's got such...

0:09:52 > 0:09:54You know, he is just a heron,

0:09:54 > 0:09:57I think it'd be lovely if I tried to make some taxidermy with him,

0:09:57 > 0:10:00to make him look like a real heron, rather than a plastic one.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03Yeah, because everyone wants an evil, bird-scaring deterrent

0:10:03 > 0:10:05in their living room.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07I think this could be a tough sell.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11That's three items saved from the skip.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15The copper pipes will be refurbished by Josh and Ollie.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18The wooden floorboards will be dealt with by Norman.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20And, finally, the plastic heron.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23Well, there's only one person keen to take that on

0:10:23 > 0:10:25and that's Sarah herself.

0:10:25 > 0:10:29Today has been incredible, with such a diverse mix of items gathered.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32I can't wait to see all that bounty transformed

0:10:32 > 0:10:34into show-stopping money-makers.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43Sarah's first stop is a visit to West Sussex,

0:10:43 > 0:10:46where, in a slightly unassuming warehouse,

0:10:46 > 0:10:50Ollie and Josh are nervously awaiting Sarah's arrival.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56So, we're pretty excited to see what Sarah is going to be bringing.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58Just a little bit nervous.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01She's usually got a knack of bringing some pretty crazy stuff

0:11:01 > 0:11:03- along with her, hasn't she? - Yes, yes.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06There are endless possibilities

0:11:06 > 0:11:07about what you can do with copper pipe.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11Whenever I see it, I always want to pick it up.

0:11:11 > 0:11:12I'm just hoping that Josh and Ollie

0:11:12 > 0:11:14are going to have some original ideas

0:11:14 > 0:11:16- of what I can do with it.- Hopefully,

0:11:16 > 0:11:20it's something that we can see some real good potential in and,

0:11:20 > 0:11:22yeah, make something real nice.

0:11:22 > 0:11:26- Yeah, hopefully.- Having copped a load of the copper tubing,

0:11:26 > 0:11:29and with Sarah seeing endless possibilities,

0:11:29 > 0:11:33the pressure is on to pipe up with some plans to produce a profit.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35- Loads of it.- Yeah.

0:11:35 > 0:11:37It's a good haul.

0:11:39 > 0:11:40In this process,

0:11:40 > 0:11:42it's all about the end product

0:11:42 > 0:11:46and what you can make and then what I can sell it for. So,

0:11:46 > 0:11:49I'm after horrifically commercial stuff

0:11:49 > 0:11:52that's got a great high-end value.

0:11:52 > 0:11:56So, I don't know what kind of stuff you've done with copper before.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58It could be something ornamental.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01Maybe candleholders or something.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04- OK.- Where we could make quite a collection of them

0:12:04 > 0:12:07- that would have quite a good value to them.- That sounds cool.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09So, maybe that could be something we could do.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11We've done something similar in the past,

0:12:11 > 0:12:14where we've just used a little bit of copper and then...

0:12:14 > 0:12:18- on the lathes we've turned, like, a base, or...- OK.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20Or some other wooden element.

0:12:20 > 0:12:24You've got this, kind of, natural verdigris of the copper.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27Yeah, those two textures together are beautiful, aren't they?

0:12:27 > 0:12:29It just works so well together, the colour combinations.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32And I think using all of the copper

0:12:32 > 0:12:35for products like this would be a great use.

0:12:35 > 0:12:39So, the boys are thinking of candle sticks,

0:12:39 > 0:12:43using the copper pipe and adding wood-turned bases.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46With this amount of copper, a whole collection would be possible,

0:12:46 > 0:12:50but it's important to keep costs under control,

0:12:50 > 0:12:53as Sarah is all about making a profit.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56OK, so maybe it's better for me to set you a budget and then you can

0:12:56 > 0:12:59just get crazy with the budget and stop when you stop.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01Yeah, what kind of figure did you have in mind?

0:13:01 > 0:13:04If I left you with 300 quid...

0:13:04 > 0:13:08I think that gives us more freedom to experiment and, you know,

0:13:08 > 0:13:11see what comes out at the end and

0:13:11 > 0:13:13go crazy with it all.

0:13:13 > 0:13:14Crazy sounds great.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17Give me a shout if you've got any problems, if you have any more mad ideas.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20- Just go for your lives, OK? - OK.- Thanks ever so much!

0:13:20 > 0:13:22- All right.- Cheers, Sarah.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24It's nice when you get something like this,

0:13:24 > 0:13:26cos you can experiment with the material.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30There's enough of it here where we really can make a couple of mistakes.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33But, at the end of the day, we can have a really good range,

0:13:33 > 0:13:35a good selection of different products on offer.

0:13:35 > 0:13:36So I think this is good.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40This might sound a bit silly,

0:13:40 > 0:13:42because we're just talking about a load of copper pipes,

0:13:42 > 0:13:45but there is a real sense of excitement in that workshop

0:13:45 > 0:13:48and I cannot wait to see what those boys produce.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52With a budget of £300

0:13:52 > 0:13:54and free range to go crazy,

0:13:54 > 0:13:56what could possibly go wrong?

0:14:01 > 0:14:04Sarah's next stop takes her to the picturesque village of Hellingly

0:14:04 > 0:14:06in East Sussex.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10Not known as a hotbed of creativity,

0:14:10 > 0:14:12but home nonetheless to Jus Jones,

0:14:12 > 0:14:17where Norman Wilkinson specialises in making new from old.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22I think it's going to be great fun.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24Just to see what we've got to do,

0:14:24 > 0:14:27but my worst nightmare would be to have something in flat-pack,

0:14:27 > 0:14:30to think, "Hey, what are we going to do with it?" What a disaster!

0:14:30 > 0:14:33Luckily, there's nothing flat-packed about this little lot.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35And with so much material,

0:14:35 > 0:14:37thinking of something more impressive than a table

0:14:37 > 0:14:39should be easy, right?

0:14:39 > 0:14:42I'm hoping that is a tempting little pile of floorboards,

0:14:42 > 0:14:46that Norman will be pleased to take on to turn into something amazing.

0:14:46 > 0:14:50There's lots to work with here. Let's see what he comes up with.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54Something amazing. No pressure there, then, Norman.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57- Ah!- Sarah, how are you?

0:14:57 > 0:14:59Yeah, really well, how are things?

0:14:59 > 0:15:00Yeah, good. They're good.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05- Floorboards?- Yeah, not just these, check this lot out.

0:15:05 > 0:15:06Oh, look at those.

0:15:08 > 0:15:12- Hundreds of them.- Fantastic, just... That is what I love.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15- Floorboards.- Brilliant. Here - you have this lot.

0:15:15 > 0:15:17- Thank you.- Shall I load you a few more up?

0:15:17 > 0:15:20Well, who would have thought that in East Sussex,

0:15:20 > 0:15:23the way to a man's heart is with a big pile of old planks?

0:15:23 > 0:15:26- I'll take these in and come back for the rest.- Brilliant.

0:15:28 > 0:15:32- Lovely, aren't they?- Loads and loads of lovely floorboards.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34So, the really obvious thing

0:15:34 > 0:15:37is to make a lovely plank-top table out of it.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39Why can't we be a bit more exciting?

0:15:39 > 0:15:42Something other than a table, perhaps?

0:15:42 > 0:15:44I think we've got all this timber here,

0:15:44 > 0:15:45why don't we do something creative?

0:15:45 > 0:15:48We're going to get, say, this first piece of board...

0:15:48 > 0:15:51- Yeah.- And then we'll cut a size and we might start with a square.

0:15:51 > 0:15:54- Right.- And then, here, we might then do three other bits

0:15:54 > 0:15:58and then we might cut another one to go around the corner, like that.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02I reckon we could make a good 6' x 36 dining table.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05Oh, so we're going with the table, then?

0:16:05 > 0:16:07At least this one sounds interesting.

0:16:09 > 0:16:14If these were the set of legs that we had, we could actually use these.

0:16:14 > 0:16:15It'd give it a really cool look.

0:16:15 > 0:16:17OK, and in terms of the finish you get on the leg,

0:16:17 > 0:16:21- do you leave it just like that? - No, no, we'll clean it up with a wire brush.

0:16:21 > 0:16:23Give it a good old clean with a wire brush.

0:16:23 > 0:16:24And then we'll wax it

0:16:24 > 0:16:27and it'll give it a really nice tactile feel as well.

0:16:27 > 0:16:32It'll make it go darker, but it just makes it, you know, lovely.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34OK, I'm really bought-in on those.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37I think they are beautiful and they add that kind of finesse,

0:16:37 > 0:16:38- adding that metal.- Yeah.

0:16:38 > 0:16:43Industrial-feel legs to complement the intricate, wooden top design.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45Sounds time-consuming and expensive.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48To make it all into a lovely saleable item...

0:16:49 > 0:16:53..you'd be looking at 975.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55- OK.- With the metal legs. It'll give it a lovely twist and make it

0:16:55 > 0:16:58a little bit industrial with everything else and I think

0:16:58 > 0:17:00- it'll be on the money.- 975?

0:17:00 > 0:17:02- So, you're teasing me at under 1,000 there, aren't you?- I am!

0:17:02 > 0:17:04You're trying to win me over.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07- I'm trying!- Cos, at 1,000, you know, basically,

0:17:07 > 0:17:09to commission something for a grand,

0:17:09 > 0:17:11I really want this to pack a punch.

0:17:11 > 0:17:12I want to be selling it.

0:17:12 > 0:17:14It will pack a punch, I promise you.

0:17:14 > 0:17:16OK, OK.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20And you'll have a good retail profit.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23OK. I think I...

0:17:23 > 0:17:25am... I think I'm fine(!)

0:17:25 > 0:17:28- ..to say...yes! Go for it. - Fantastic. Well done.

0:17:28 > 0:17:29Cool! (Phew!)

0:17:29 > 0:17:32- See you soon.- See you soon!

0:17:36 > 0:17:38I think I've got a great, great project.

0:17:38 > 0:17:40Great material.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43The timber's lovely. You know, you can look at it, you can read it.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45It's what we're used to working in,

0:17:45 > 0:17:49so, I think I really, really am looking forward to it.

0:17:50 > 0:17:51I always get the heebie-jeebies

0:17:51 > 0:17:55when I commission something that's nearly £1,000.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57BUT dining tables always sell well,

0:17:57 > 0:18:00Norman is talking a really good game and fingers crossed,

0:18:00 > 0:18:02I can make some money on it too.

0:18:04 > 0:18:09This is a serious outlay of almost £1,000 in costs.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11Can Norman really come up with

0:18:11 > 0:18:13something that will make Sarah a profit?

0:18:21 > 0:18:24Back home, in idyllic West Sussex,

0:18:24 > 0:18:26where wildlife is in abundance,

0:18:26 > 0:18:29Sarah has been inspired with her very own project.

0:18:30 > 0:18:34They say that a bird in the hand is worth two in a bush.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37Perhaps that's where this bird should have been left? In a bush.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48I have been dying to get started on this piece of pond life.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50I have got great plans for him.

0:18:50 > 0:18:54I want to cover him in fabric and turn him into a really high-end,

0:18:54 > 0:18:56taxidermy sculpture.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59I'm going to start off, I think, by putting some fabric on his beak.

0:19:00 > 0:19:01And begin the transformation.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04Sarah is about to cover this heron

0:19:04 > 0:19:07with coloured fabric to make him look more realistic.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09This, I can't wait to see.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13This isn't completely natural, but I think it'll be pretty effective,

0:19:13 > 0:19:14by the time it's all in place.

0:19:18 > 0:19:22I'm cutting out some little grey, feather-shaped pieces,

0:19:22 > 0:19:25so I can start building up the pattern that the feathers make

0:19:25 > 0:19:28all along this head section and down here.

0:19:30 > 0:19:35I've put layers and layers of little trimmings of linen across this top

0:19:35 > 0:19:37bit here, to try and make it like that fluffy Mohican

0:19:37 > 0:19:39that the heron has.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42I've cut little strips of it like this.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45And if I just lay them on, and layer them up...

0:19:46 > 0:19:47..hopefully, he's beginning to get

0:19:47 > 0:19:49that really menacing heron look again.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51Herons are unmistakable

0:19:51 > 0:19:54in their natural appearance and can be found in

0:19:54 > 0:19:57all areas of the UK all year round,

0:19:57 > 0:19:59as they're birds which do not migrate.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01- Interesting.- Looks more like emu.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06Oh, no. Why do I take these things on?

0:20:06 > 0:20:10Unlike emus, herons eat lots of fish,

0:20:10 > 0:20:13but they're also partial to other small birds,

0:20:13 > 0:20:15small mammals and even rodents.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17Interesting.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21You can buy a little plastic heron, like this,

0:20:21 > 0:20:23for about 35 quid in a pet shop

0:20:23 > 0:20:27to keep the herons away from your goldfish.

0:20:27 > 0:20:29I'm hoping I'm going to make...

0:20:30 > 0:20:32..three times that, at least.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36IF I can make it look good.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40That's certainly the challenge here, Sarah.

0:20:40 > 0:20:42And you still have some way to go.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48With the off-cuts of material sourced for free,

0:20:48 > 0:20:52the only costs so far have been just £7.

0:20:54 > 0:20:58The question is, will somebody actually want it when it's finished?

0:21:06 > 0:21:10Back in West Sussex, the boys have taken Sarah's words,

0:21:10 > 0:21:13regarding mad ideas, to heart.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15If their plans are anything to go by,

0:21:15 > 0:21:18things are about to hot up around here.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20What we want to do is, probably,

0:21:20 > 0:21:25use some of this bigger pipe to make our candelabras and anything we've

0:21:25 > 0:21:29got left over, then we can melt down to make the joints.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32So, we'll probably chop up most of the skinny stuff,

0:21:32 > 0:21:35cos we want to create like,

0:21:35 > 0:21:37a solid bar of copper, where...

0:21:39 > 0:21:42..we'd have the bigger tubes coming out of the bar.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45So, that would be our candleholder part.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48And then we're going to turn a wooden base to it as well.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52This is sounding more and more ambitious.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55Josh and Ollie start on their classic candelabras

0:21:55 > 0:21:59by cutting up the copper that they intend to melt down.

0:21:59 > 0:22:04The boys plan to use a method of casting called the lost wax method.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07Although, with a slight twist, on this occasion,

0:22:07 > 0:22:10it will be a lost polystyrene method.

0:22:10 > 0:22:12That works.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14Just a tiny bit.

0:22:14 > 0:22:18The idea is that the desired look of the final item is created using

0:22:18 > 0:22:24polystyrene, which, once in contact with molten copper, burns away,

0:22:24 > 0:22:27leaving an exact-shaped mould.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30With this polystyrene idea, it's not definitely going to work.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32We have tried it a couple of times before

0:22:32 > 0:22:34and managed to get something out of it.

0:22:34 > 0:22:36So, I just hope that it'll work today.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41Not only is this their own method of casting they're trying out,

0:22:41 > 0:22:46but they will also be using their own home-made furnace. Yikes!

0:22:46 > 0:22:50The boys have lined half an oil barrel with heat-resistant cement

0:22:50 > 0:22:53and have built an air duct at the bottom,

0:22:53 > 0:22:55to which a hairdryer will be attached.

0:22:55 > 0:22:59They're about to heat copper to above 1,000 degrees.

0:22:59 > 0:23:00Good luck, guys.

0:23:00 > 0:23:02I've got a feeling it could go really bad.

0:23:02 > 0:23:06- Why?- Once the molten copper gets into this bit,

0:23:06 > 0:23:08it could just run all down these pipes.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13That's absolutely what's going to happen, isn't it?

0:23:13 > 0:23:16So, we either go for it or try and prevent that.

0:23:16 > 0:23:20This is making us look heavily stupid right now.

0:23:20 > 0:23:21To be honest, this is half the fun.

0:23:21 > 0:23:25I mean, if everything went smooth, it would be pretty boring, you know.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27So, this is where it gets interesting.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32Having spotted a flaw in their casting plan,

0:23:32 > 0:23:34the boys choose the prevention route,

0:23:34 > 0:23:36rather than "just going for it".

0:23:36 > 0:23:39By packing sand into the bottom of the pipes,

0:23:39 > 0:23:44the hope is that the molten copper will be prevented from escaping down

0:23:44 > 0:23:46the hollow tubes.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48And it's only until you do stuff

0:23:48 > 0:23:51that you realise where the problems are going to come from.

0:23:51 > 0:23:52Cos you write this down on paper

0:23:52 > 0:23:55and you can't really see that happening.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58So, you've got to actually get out there and do it before you realise

0:23:58 > 0:24:00where the potential mistakes are going to come from.

0:24:02 > 0:24:03If you say so, Josh.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06In such critical operations as this,

0:24:06 > 0:24:11teamwork is everything and clear communication is key.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13MUFFLED VOICES

0:24:14 > 0:24:16THEY SLUR THEIR VOICES

0:24:19 > 0:24:21Yeah, I think it's going all right, isn't it?

0:24:21 > 0:24:23It's heating up pretty quick.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25The pipes just disappear into nothing.

0:24:25 > 0:24:27I know. Yeah, they don't add up to too much.

0:24:29 > 0:24:31Once the pipes have melted down,

0:24:31 > 0:24:35Josh pours the molten copper into the mould.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38Hopefully, this polystyrene mould works.

0:24:38 > 0:24:40The moment of truth, guys.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43Wow, look at that.

0:24:44 > 0:24:45That's cool.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47Sweet.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49I like the green bits around there.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51Yeah, yeah. Hopefully, it'll keep some of that colour.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53It's pretty rough.

0:24:53 > 0:24:57Well, no, it's smooth, but you've got the pipes kind of half showing.

0:24:58 > 0:25:01Yeah, that's come off(!)

0:25:03 > 0:25:06The home-made furnace has worked like a dream,

0:25:06 > 0:25:08melting the copper down.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11The casting, however, has not gone quite to plan,

0:25:11 > 0:25:14leaving the boys with some work to do

0:25:14 > 0:25:16if a profit is still to be in the pipeline.

0:25:23 > 0:25:25Back in East Sussex,

0:25:25 > 0:25:28Norman is embarking on making a complex mosaic tabletop

0:25:28 > 0:25:32out of the old floorboards Sarah left behind.

0:25:32 > 0:25:34Not as simple as it sounds.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39Today, we're going to start the table with the floorboards.

0:25:39 > 0:25:42We've already pre-cut the size of the table.

0:25:42 > 0:25:45So, this is the size of what we're going to be working on.

0:25:45 > 0:25:49So, we're going to start in one corner, cos it's the easiest part.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52And I'm thinking we're going to...

0:25:52 > 0:25:54go there,

0:25:54 > 0:25:57cut across the saw there and then we can then use that to start and start

0:25:57 > 0:25:59working away across the piece.

0:26:00 > 0:26:02Norman's first task

0:26:02 > 0:26:05is to cut the floorboards into all sorts of different shapes

0:26:05 > 0:26:07and sizes.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10To make it stand out, we want to chamfer all the edges.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12So, if we get a plane...

0:26:12 > 0:26:15And as you can see, we're just taking the edges off.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19You know, if one is a bit more than the other, it doesn't matter,

0:26:19 > 0:26:21cos it'll all add to its charm.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26The challenge is just keep concentrating and get it right

0:26:26 > 0:26:28and hopefully we don't go out the square.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30Cos nine times out of ten, we do.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33So, you know,

0:26:33 > 0:26:35we cut it and then we put it down

0:26:35 > 0:26:37and you don't quite get it on the edge

0:26:37 > 0:26:39and we lose what we're doing.

0:26:39 > 0:26:43So, we've really got to make sure we're doing it right.

0:26:43 > 0:26:47Norman is using an MDF base to stick the small pieces of floorboards to

0:26:47 > 0:26:50with both wood glue and nails.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53Also, we try and get some of the grain going the other way,

0:26:53 > 0:26:56because then, obviously, when we come to strip it and polish it,

0:26:56 > 0:26:59it's so much better having the grains going a different way.

0:26:59 > 0:27:03It'll give it another different look and another different texture.

0:27:03 > 0:27:04So, again, we've got to take the...

0:27:06 > 0:27:10- ..edge off.- With so many blocks to cut and with no definitive plan to

0:27:10 > 0:27:13follow, it would be easy for things to go wrong,

0:27:13 > 0:27:15so it's important for Norman

0:27:15 > 0:27:17to maintain a focus on the task in hand.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20It's fun, but then also when you're

0:27:20 > 0:27:23playing with the bricks and trying to make it work,

0:27:23 > 0:27:25it can do your head in as well.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28You know, because you're doing so many blocks and all of a sudden,

0:27:28 > 0:27:30your mind is going everywhere.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32So, sometimes, you have to stop for ten minutes,

0:27:32 > 0:27:35rethink and then see where you're going again.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37I imagine, going home to bed tonight, I'll be thinking blocks,

0:27:37 > 0:27:40won't I? That's all I'll see. You know, instead of counting sheep,

0:27:40 > 0:27:43I can count blocks. And how many I put down.

0:27:43 > 0:27:46At a cost of almost £1,000,

0:27:46 > 0:27:50this project is certainly enough to cause a few sleepless nights.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52Let's just hope when it's finished,

0:27:52 > 0:27:56Sarah is able to make a profit from all those fragments of floorboards.

0:28:06 > 0:28:11I've made a real mess here, but I have got some lovely green velvet.

0:28:11 > 0:28:12I'm going to cover this base...

0:28:14 > 0:28:16..with some green velvet.

0:28:16 > 0:28:19So, he looks like he's standing on a beautiful, mossy river bank.

0:28:19 > 0:28:22Finish up here and then he should look fantastic.

0:28:24 > 0:28:27You certainly can't fault Sarah for effort with this one.

0:28:29 > 0:28:34She's managed to turn what was an unremarkable bird-scarer...

0:28:35 > 0:28:37..into a remarkably scary bird.

0:28:39 > 0:28:44When Sarah collected him, this heron was destined for the dump.

0:28:44 > 0:28:47With a little fabric, pots and pots of glue

0:28:47 > 0:28:49and what looks like a bandage,

0:28:49 > 0:28:55he now stands proud, clothed in his plumage of many colours.

0:28:56 > 0:28:59So, hopefully, heron has made a transformation -

0:28:59 > 0:29:02from pond-side predator to top-end taxidermy.

0:29:04 > 0:29:07With the heron all ready to fly the nest,

0:29:07 > 0:29:10Sarah takes photos to show its splendour.

0:29:11 > 0:29:14So, who would want a 2-foot plastic heron?

0:29:15 > 0:29:16Well, they did.

0:29:18 > 0:29:20Perhaps for obvious reasons.

0:29:20 > 0:29:25Surprisingly, this little pub in Havant didn't have its own heron.

0:29:25 > 0:29:27It does now.

0:29:31 > 0:29:35Sarah met Richard holding a heron at the Witley Recycling Centre.

0:29:35 > 0:29:36You can't throw that away.

0:29:36 > 0:29:39Oh, yes. They don't work.

0:29:39 > 0:29:44An ineffectual bird-scarer certainly wasn't about to scare Sarah.

0:29:44 > 0:29:46I think I can do something with this.

0:29:46 > 0:29:48All right(!) Good on you.

0:29:49 > 0:29:52Sarah set about styling the bird.

0:29:52 > 0:29:54And, luckily, knew of a heron-less pub,

0:29:54 > 0:29:57who were keen to take it off her hands.

0:30:02 > 0:30:05Now, Sarah has returned to near Witley

0:30:05 > 0:30:09to update Richard on his old bit of pond life.

0:30:13 > 0:30:15Hi, there.

0:30:15 > 0:30:16- Hi, oh.- Richard!

0:30:16 > 0:30:18- Hello.- Lovely to see you again. - Good to see you again.

0:30:18 > 0:30:22- You're not in your tip kit, are you?!- No. Definitely not!

0:30:22 > 0:30:25I've just come back to catch up with you with your heron.

0:30:25 > 0:30:28- Right.- Well, he's taken flight again. He has been transformed.

0:30:28 > 0:30:31- OK.- I've got a few pictures here to show you what happened to him.

0:30:31 > 0:30:35- Let's see.- So, he was given a new set of feathers

0:30:35 > 0:30:37and he's been...

0:30:37 > 0:30:39completely covered in a linen plumage.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42Goodness! I love the way you've done the feathers here.

0:30:42 > 0:30:44- That's really good.- Oh, thank you.

0:30:44 > 0:30:46You've done a fabulous job, I must say!

0:30:46 > 0:30:48He is being used

0:30:48 > 0:30:51as a decoration for a pub.

0:30:51 > 0:30:53And I have £50 here for you.

0:30:53 > 0:30:55Cor, that's marvellous!

0:30:55 > 0:30:57But I shall give this to charity.

0:30:57 > 0:31:00- OK.- Probably RNID, which is one of the charities I support.

0:31:00 > 0:31:02Oh, fantastic. Well,

0:31:02 > 0:31:05I think that's good news that that heron has been transformed.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08He's out of hibernation and now to support something like that,

0:31:08 > 0:31:10that's lovely. Thank you so much for letting me have your heron.

0:31:10 > 0:31:15- Lovely to see you again.- Pleasure. Thank you for letting me see the end result.- My pleasure, my pleasure.

0:31:15 > 0:31:16- Take care. Bye-bye.- OK, bye.

0:31:22 > 0:31:26The heron transformation cost Sarah just £7 in total.

0:31:26 > 0:31:28£5 for the plinth

0:31:28 > 0:31:29and £2 for the glue.

0:31:29 > 0:31:32And with the new feathered friend

0:31:32 > 0:31:34selling for £57,

0:31:34 > 0:31:38that left a profit of £50 to be handed back to Richard.

0:31:38 > 0:31:41Well, I love it when the projects are a little bit of a surprise.

0:31:41 > 0:31:45And I think Richard was really pleased to see what happened to his heron.

0:31:45 > 0:31:46And I'm pleased that it's got a new home

0:31:46 > 0:31:49and I've handed over some money for nothing.

0:31:56 > 0:31:59With a bird no longer in hand,

0:31:59 > 0:32:03Sarah is heading back to West Sussex to catch up with Ollie and Josh,

0:32:03 > 0:32:06with whom she left a treasure trove of old copper pipes.

0:32:08 > 0:32:10So, I left Josh and Ollie with a mission.

0:32:10 > 0:32:14They had £300 and a pile of copper pipe to transform into something

0:32:14 > 0:32:16saleable that I can make a profit from.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20How did Josh and Ollie feel about Sarah's visit?

0:32:20 > 0:32:22Confident. I'm ready.

0:32:22 > 0:32:25I think she's going to like these. They're pretty fun too...

0:32:26 > 0:32:29Yeah. I think she's going to react well to these.

0:32:29 > 0:32:33Sarah left behind the remnants of an old heating system,

0:32:33 > 0:32:35in the form of a jumble of copper pipes.

0:32:37 > 0:32:41Ollie and Josh have heated and polished, hammered and chiselled,

0:32:41 > 0:32:44and with a lot of trial and the odd bit of error,

0:32:44 > 0:32:46they've created a magnificent, modern,

0:32:46 > 0:32:48stylish range of candlesticks

0:32:48 > 0:32:50and flower holders.

0:32:53 > 0:32:54Wow!

0:32:55 > 0:32:57They are FANTASTIC!

0:32:57 > 0:32:59They are beautiful.

0:33:00 > 0:33:04- They are lovely.- Thank you. - Great grouped together, aren't they?

0:33:04 > 0:33:07- Yeah, yeah.- You've had some fun with that lot, haven't you?

0:33:07 > 0:33:09Let's see those. So, talk me through that.

0:33:09 > 0:33:11How did...? So, what have you done?

0:33:11 > 0:33:12Um...

0:33:12 > 0:33:15- Well...- Yeah, this was a mission.

0:33:15 > 0:33:20The original idea was to use some of the copper pipes to melt down

0:33:20 > 0:33:23and make these, but our set-up is sketchy.

0:33:23 > 0:33:26So, we've made our own furnace

0:33:26 > 0:33:28and it doesn't always work to plan.

0:33:28 > 0:33:30Although our set-up is quite sketchy,

0:33:30 > 0:33:32I think that's what makes them quite nice,

0:33:32 > 0:33:34because they're not very...

0:33:34 > 0:33:38You know, they're all kind of bubbly and that adds to the charm of them.

0:33:38 > 0:33:42Um, I really like the way you have polished and not polished.

0:33:42 > 0:33:45- Yeah.- And you've got that contrast and stuff going on.

0:33:45 > 0:33:46They are going to sell instantly.

0:33:46 > 0:33:50- People are going to make these, people are going to copy you making these.- Yeah.

0:33:50 > 0:33:52When you get hold of one for the first time,

0:33:52 > 0:33:54- you just want to touch it, don't you?- Yeah.

0:33:54 > 0:33:55And get your hands on it.

0:33:55 > 0:33:57I think you've done...

0:33:58 > 0:33:59..really well. 300 quid...

0:34:01 > 0:34:03- ..budget?- Fine for us, yeah.

0:34:03 > 0:34:07- Yeah.- Yeah?- I hope you can make some money off them.

0:34:07 > 0:34:11I'd say that's £300 well invested.

0:34:11 > 0:34:15With so little to work with, the boys have created a range that will,

0:34:15 > 0:34:18hopefully, provide a copper-bottomed return.

0:34:18 > 0:34:20Well, never mind molten metal,

0:34:20 > 0:34:22those boys are on fire, aren't they?

0:34:22 > 0:34:24I absolutely love their copper collection

0:34:24 > 0:34:27and I think there's cash to be made here.

0:34:29 > 0:34:32When Sarah met him at the tip in Witley,

0:34:32 > 0:34:36Vivian had already seen the potential in his copper cast-offs.

0:34:36 > 0:34:38My wife is Danish. Over there,

0:34:38 > 0:34:40they do all sorts of architectural things in their gardens

0:34:40 > 0:34:42with all this piping.

0:34:42 > 0:34:45Sarah took a shine to the cast-off plumbing and Vivian had

0:34:45 > 0:34:48ideas as to what they could become.

0:34:48 > 0:34:51I think she was going to do some artistic work, was she not?

0:34:51 > 0:34:54- Is that the idea?- In the end,

0:34:54 > 0:34:57it was Josh and Ollie with the adventurous artistic ideas.

0:35:01 > 0:35:05Their beautiful collection was quickly snapped up by Nick,

0:35:05 > 0:35:08who runs the online shop Smithers of Stamford.

0:35:08 > 0:35:10- Is it the kind of thing you think you might want to buy?- Yeah,

0:35:10 > 0:35:13definitely. They'd do well on the website, yeah.

0:35:13 > 0:35:14That's got retail potential.

0:35:14 > 0:35:17- Yeah.- That's front cover of serious style magazines.

0:35:17 > 0:35:20- It's got such a great look, hasn't it?- Mm.

0:35:20 > 0:35:22- I want that one.- Yeah?

0:35:22 > 0:35:25- Yeah.- I'll sell it to you, if you want.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28Cheeky. I'll do the jokes around here, thank you.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32With a final cost of £300

0:35:32 > 0:35:34to transform the old copper pipes

0:35:34 > 0:35:37and with Nick agreeing to pay £400

0:35:37 > 0:35:39to take them all,

0:35:39 > 0:35:42that's a neat profit of £100.

0:35:45 > 0:35:47Well, Josh and Ollie certainly

0:35:47 > 0:35:49worked their magic on those copper pipes,

0:35:49 > 0:35:52but, unfortunately, I haven't been able to get hold of Vivian,

0:35:52 > 0:35:53who dropped them off at the tip.

0:35:53 > 0:35:56So I'm going to make sure that the £100 profit

0:35:56 > 0:35:58goes straight to Children In Need.

0:36:02 > 0:36:05The copper pipe creations have been a huge success.

0:36:05 > 0:36:07And the heron makeover is...

0:36:07 > 0:36:09Well, at least it's finished.

0:36:09 > 0:36:11So, Sarah has returned to East Sussex,

0:36:11 > 0:36:16where Norman has been piecing together his mosaic-style table.

0:36:18 > 0:36:20I left Norman with a lovely lot of floorboards

0:36:20 > 0:36:22and nearly £1,000 worth of budget.

0:36:22 > 0:36:26So I hope he's managed to transform them into something truly saleable.

0:36:26 > 0:36:29Cos at that price, it's going to have to be fantastic,

0:36:29 > 0:36:30if I'm going to make a profit.

0:36:33 > 0:36:37When Sarah dropped off the tired old timber, it was, literally,

0:36:37 > 0:36:39just a pile of old planks.

0:36:40 > 0:36:44Norman has painstakingly cut and levelled each individual piece,

0:36:44 > 0:36:49so they fit together to create a tabletop which is totally unique.

0:36:53 > 0:36:56Norman's chosen wooden legs to complement the top,

0:36:56 > 0:36:59instead of Sarah's much-loved metal legs.

0:37:00 > 0:37:02So, how is she going to react?

0:37:06 > 0:37:08- I'm well, how are you?- Yeah, good.

0:37:08 > 0:37:10Oh, wow!

0:37:11 > 0:37:12How on EARTH did you do that?

0:37:12 > 0:37:14It must have taken hours.

0:37:15 > 0:37:17- Too many.- Too many hours?

0:37:17 > 0:37:19Oh, that doesn't sound good for budget.

0:37:19 > 0:37:22- No, no. We didn't use the metal legs in the end.- Where have my legs gone?

0:37:22 > 0:37:25We looked at them and we didn't feel it worked.

0:37:25 > 0:37:28So, we've done the whole painted base.

0:37:28 > 0:37:29But we think it actually works

0:37:29 > 0:37:32and picks the top out and really shows it off.

0:37:32 > 0:37:33It's a big old chunk, isn't it?

0:37:33 > 0:37:35- It's lovely.- Yeah,

0:37:35 > 0:37:38it's definitely got a surface on it that you want to touch.

0:37:38 > 0:37:42There's not a lot of the black and the stuff left on it.

0:37:42 > 0:37:44No, obviously, we've stripped it, cos you have to strip it

0:37:44 > 0:37:47and then even up, you know, the cuts and everything.

0:37:47 > 0:37:49So, that's what we do.

0:37:49 > 0:37:52Obviously, there are different shades of timber and everything.

0:37:52 > 0:37:53Yeah.

0:37:53 > 0:37:57Well, it certainly looks like hours and hours of work.

0:37:57 > 0:38:00It's an intricate top, isn't it?

0:38:00 > 0:38:02Yeah, yeah. I mean, it took longer than we thought,

0:38:02 > 0:38:06because we've used smaller blocks than we maybe would have.

0:38:06 > 0:38:09I know you said before, it depends on your mood.

0:38:09 > 0:38:11- Oh, definitely.- Was it all right?

0:38:11 > 0:38:14- Did it get you in trouble or was it OK?- No, no - I mean, obviously,

0:38:14 > 0:38:16sometimes, it takes you half an hour or something to get into it.

0:38:16 > 0:38:19You scratch your head and can't think where you're going and then,

0:38:19 > 0:38:21all of a sudden, you get into it and just lose yourself.

0:38:21 > 0:38:23Then you go into a different direction.

0:38:23 > 0:38:26I can see you got lost around here.

0:38:26 > 0:38:27There's some really little bits.

0:38:27 > 0:38:28Oh, yeah. That's the M25!

0:38:28 > 0:38:30Yeah!

0:38:30 > 0:38:33I don't think perfection

0:38:33 > 0:38:35means things have to be perfect.

0:38:35 > 0:38:37- No.- I think this is, you know...

0:38:38 > 0:38:40- A work in progress.- Yeah, precisely.

0:38:40 > 0:38:43- Excellent.- I don't think we'll ever get there.

0:38:43 > 0:38:45The original budget was £975,

0:38:45 > 0:38:48using the reclaimed metal legs.

0:38:48 > 0:38:52With the change of plan to much cheaper, although no less classy,

0:38:52 > 0:38:56pine legs, what difference will that make to the final cost?

0:38:56 > 0:38:58So, what are you saying, 850?

0:38:58 > 0:38:59- 850.- 850.

0:38:59 > 0:39:01Well, I really appreciate that.

0:39:01 > 0:39:03Nobody is ever going to have one just like this.

0:39:03 > 0:39:06I know, but when I say it, I just want to cry!

0:39:07 > 0:39:10I'm sending a courier. Make sure you wrap it up, all right?

0:39:10 > 0:39:13- Yeah, I'll do the tears, I'll mop them up.- Thanks, Norman. Bye!

0:39:13 > 0:39:17Well, that's a whopping reduction of £125.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20No wonder Sarah has a spring in her step.

0:39:20 > 0:39:23Sometimes, it's not always about the money, it's about...

0:39:23 > 0:39:26making the piece work. Someone's going to love it one day.

0:39:26 > 0:39:27That's the best thing about it.

0:39:27 > 0:39:29Some family, whoever it is,

0:39:29 > 0:39:32are going to enjoy it and love it and cherish it.

0:39:32 > 0:39:35Well, if you're going to have a table that's got crazy paving

0:39:35 > 0:39:37all over the top of it, that's a very good example of it.

0:39:37 > 0:39:40I'm glad the budget has gone down a bit,

0:39:40 > 0:39:43because I'm going to have to find somebody who really likes that look

0:39:43 > 0:39:45in order to buy it and make a good profit.

0:39:53 > 0:39:56When Sarah met Sarah at the tip in Witley,

0:39:56 > 0:39:59she was busy unloading a boot full of floorboards.

0:39:59 > 0:40:02- Are they your floorboards? - They are our floorboards.

0:40:02 > 0:40:04Wow, you've got loads of them.

0:40:04 > 0:40:08Sarah had hopes as to what the boards might become.

0:40:08 > 0:40:10I hope it's something more exciting than a table.

0:40:10 > 0:40:13I'll try and think of something more impressive than a table.

0:40:13 > 0:40:17Try as she might, the floorboards did indeed become a table.

0:40:17 > 0:40:20But Norman made sure it wasn't just ANY table.

0:40:20 > 0:40:24And it was snapped up by established vintage and retro dealer,

0:40:24 > 0:40:26The Old Cinema in London.

0:40:26 > 0:40:31Our Sarah has now returned to Witley to catch up with the other Sarah,

0:40:31 > 0:40:35to break the whole "it is a table" news.

0:40:37 > 0:40:40- Hiya.- Hello.- It's so nice to see you again.- And you.

0:40:40 > 0:40:43- How are you?- Good, thank you. - I was hoping to catch up with you,

0:40:43 > 0:40:45because I took your floorboards at the tip.

0:40:45 > 0:40:48I remember you saying that you'd been renovating your back bedroom,

0:40:48 > 0:40:51- is that right?- Yes, we have been. - Has that all happened now?

0:40:51 > 0:40:54I wish it had, but, unfortunately, it's a bit slow in progress. But it's getting there!

0:40:54 > 0:40:58Oh, fantastic. So, when we took them away, I remember you saying,

0:40:58 > 0:41:00"I wonder what you'll make. Anything but a table."

0:41:00 > 0:41:02Had you thought what we might do?

0:41:02 > 0:41:04To be honest with you, I hadn't.

0:41:04 > 0:41:06But I'm very interested to see.

0:41:06 > 0:41:09Well, I work with this fantastic guy called Norman,

0:41:09 > 0:41:10who is a real old-school maker.

0:41:10 > 0:41:12I took the floorboards to him

0:41:12 > 0:41:15and he loved all the textures on them and he said,

0:41:15 > 0:41:18"I must make a table out of them!" And I went, "Oh, no!"

0:41:18 > 0:41:21And he said, "Well, it's a really great one. I've got lovely ideas."

0:41:21 > 0:41:24So, I've brought you some pictures to have a look at.

0:41:24 > 0:41:26So, this is how it turned out in the end.

0:41:26 > 0:41:28- Oh, wow.- So, that is now...

0:41:28 > 0:41:30Well, it's not the straight planks, is it?

0:41:30 > 0:41:32So, it's definitely a very intricate patchwork.

0:41:32 > 0:41:37- That's lovely.- Yeah, so, it was snapped up by London buyer,

0:41:37 > 0:41:40who has a big, big shop in town.

0:41:40 > 0:41:44And I have £100 profit from your floorboards for you.

0:41:44 > 0:41:47Oh, wow. That will help towards making our back bedroom better.

0:41:47 > 0:41:51Oh, fantastic. That's a lovely feeling that it's going to go right back to where it came from.

0:41:51 > 0:41:54They were great to work with and I'm sorry we didn't come up with

0:41:54 > 0:41:55something more interesting.

0:41:55 > 0:41:58- But it was lovely. Thank you very much.- Our pleasure.

0:42:01 > 0:42:05With final costs of £850,

0:42:05 > 0:42:09Sarah managed to sell the mosaic-top table for 950,

0:42:09 > 0:42:14which meant £100 profit could be left with Sarah to help finish those

0:42:14 > 0:42:16bedroom renovations.

0:42:17 > 0:42:19Well, I think we got away with that.

0:42:19 > 0:42:22Sarah said making a table out of her floorboards might be a bit boring.

0:42:22 > 0:42:25But with 100 quid in her pocket, I think we changed her mind.

0:42:34 > 0:42:37Sarah has salvaged three unwanted items

0:42:37 > 0:42:39from the Witley Recycling Centre.

0:42:39 > 0:42:43Vivian's old copper pipes were turned into candelabras

0:42:43 > 0:42:45and candlesticks.

0:42:45 > 0:42:49Sarah's floorboards were made into a mosaic-style table.

0:42:49 > 0:42:51And the plastic heron has been

0:42:51 > 0:42:54adorned with a new coat of feathers.

0:42:54 > 0:42:57So, that's three more things saved that were destined to be dumped.

0:42:57 > 0:42:59We met some fantastic people,

0:42:59 > 0:43:03created some amazing items and we turned a pretty decent profit too.
