0:00:08 > 0:00:11This is beautiful. Why are you getting rid of it?

0:00:11 > 0:00:15The answer could be hiding in over 20 million tonnes

0:00:15 > 0:00:18of household waste, thrown out by us every year.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21I'll just do a quick check for Granny's gold.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32I've been a builder, I've been a philosophy student

0:00:32 > 0:00:34and now, I'm a furniture restorer,

0:00:34 > 0:00:37so I know more than most about transformations.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41I revamp the old, turn it into the new and sell it on for a profit.

0:00:41 > 0:00:45And with some of the country's elite designers and makers...

0:00:45 > 0:00:48- Why would you chuck these chairs out?- So, what do you think?

0:00:48 > 0:00:50JAY LAUGHS

0:00:50 > 0:00:54..he can transform his finds into desirable...

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Boom - smashed it!

0:00:56 > 0:00:58- ..valuable... - It's got real potential.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01..and, hopefully, saleable items.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04I've got to take my hat off to you, sir.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06If Jay is successful,

0:01:06 > 0:01:09then he can hand the profits back to the very people

0:01:09 > 0:01:13who had no idea there was cash to be made from their trash.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16- £80.- What?- Yes.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29Welcome to Walsall, near Birmingham.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31It's the birthplace of Noddy Holder

0:01:31 > 0:01:34and home to Merchants Way Recycling Centre.

0:01:34 > 0:01:38This is a non-stop hive of activity.

0:01:43 > 0:01:47to turn your trash into hard cash.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51I love transforming things that have had it into must-have items

0:01:51 > 0:01:54and then selling them on for a profit.

0:01:55 > 0:02:00But before you make a beeline for your local tip, take note -

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Jay's been given special permission to seek out three items

0:02:03 > 0:02:08that he can rejuvenate, repurpose and sell on for a profit.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14First up today are Tim and Christiane.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16But is there anything here packed with potential?

0:02:16 > 0:02:18Hello, guys, how are you doing?

0:02:18 > 0:02:21- Hello.- Hello, my name's Jay. - Hello, Jay.- Christiane.

0:02:21 > 0:02:26- What are you doing with that? - That's going...- No! It can't be.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30So, OK, you're throwing this away. Why are you throwing it away?

0:02:30 > 0:02:32It's rusty, it's rusty.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34- Oh, it's rusty. - And you can't use it.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36- OK, you can't use it. - And we're decluttering.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39What's the history behind this then? How long have you had this?

0:02:39 > 0:02:41- Well, I arrived in England in '85. - OK.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44I bought it in France and when I arrived in London,

0:02:44 > 0:02:46- I found a bag of stickers very cheaply somewhere.- Right.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49I didn't realise what they were, actually, all these stickers.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52- And they're football teams, aren't they?- Football teams, yeah.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55I used it for travelling back to France and to London.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57- That was in '85, '86.- So...

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Then it went into the shed in the garden about 15 years ago.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03This is really, really cool. If it's all right with you,

0:03:03 > 0:03:06I would like to stay in contact with you guys, keep hold of this

0:03:06 > 0:03:09and transform it into something and show you what we turn it into.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12- Brilliant.- If that's all right. - Fine.- Yes, it's exciting.- Yeah.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14- Thank you. - That's the life of a suitcase.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17- Yeah, life of a suitcase, yeah. - Pleasure.- Bon voyage.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21And bonne chance. You're going to need it with this one.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27But what do Tim and Christiane reckon to Jay taking on their case?

0:03:27 > 0:03:29It's really good, actually,

0:03:29 > 0:03:32because it's a suitcase that's got lots of happy memories

0:03:32 > 0:03:35and the idea that it's going to have another life is a really good one,

0:03:35 > 0:03:38so good for him and we hope it's successful

0:03:38 > 0:03:41in its new chapter of its life.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Look at this little beauty. I really, really love this.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49I love two things about it, which is the colour - lovely blue -

0:03:49 > 0:03:53and the timber that's going around it. It just oozes style to me.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57Seen better days but to tell you the truth, it's not in bad nick.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01I know someone that will be able to transform this into a thing of joy.

0:04:01 > 0:04:05And that someone for the job is Daniel Heath.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09Daniel is a designer and maker

0:04:09 > 0:04:12who can turn his hand to just about anything.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15A wallpaper and textiles designer by trade,

0:04:15 > 0:04:20he produces everything from bespoke furniture to high-end furnishings.

0:04:21 > 0:04:25I absolutely love coming to work because I love my studio,

0:04:25 > 0:04:29I love making things and I get to do that most of the time.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33The joy of working with salvaged material is that you've got

0:04:33 > 0:04:36a material that you can give a second life to

0:04:36 > 0:04:38and it's got provenance to it,

0:04:38 > 0:04:40it's got a history that's built into that material,

0:04:40 > 0:04:45and you're making it have some new character

0:04:45 > 0:04:47and then putting it back out there again,

0:04:47 > 0:04:49so that's extremely satisfying.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53Let's hope you're as satisfied, Daniel, in this case.

0:04:57 > 0:05:02That's one item safely tucked away and Jay's back on the trail

0:05:02 > 0:05:04for our second challenge of the day.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08Jay, being Jay, he likes to help out when he can,

0:05:08 > 0:05:10but sometimes, it doesn't always go to plan.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13Can't let your mum carry this stuff. That's not right, is it?

0:05:13 > 0:05:17- Look at that. Look at that, eh.- Poor Jay.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21Maybe Gemma and her old armchair will be a more successful encounter.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25- Wow, this is really cool. How are you doing? I'm Jay.- Hello.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28- Are you all right?- Yes.- Good on you. What are you doing with this?

0:05:28 > 0:05:31- Obviously, you're throwing it away. - Yeah.- What's the history behind it?

0:05:31 > 0:05:33Where's it come from?

0:05:33 > 0:05:38My in-laws moved into a 1950s place and they had the whole suite.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41- Of this?- Of this. And it was covered with hunting material.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45- It was very kitch.- Right.- So, I stripped off the hunting thing.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49- Yeah.- And my sister-in-law had one and I had another

0:05:49 > 0:05:52- and the sofa was rehomed somewhere in a charity shop.- OK.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55And I put it in my studio where the cats live

0:05:55 > 0:05:57and they completely scratched it to pieces

0:05:57 > 0:06:00and then I read this book about not keeping things

0:06:00 > 0:06:03- for lots of stupid reasons.- OK.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05- Or examining why you keep things. - Right.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08And so I've been really trimming everything back completely,

0:06:08 > 0:06:10so I got rid of it, put it in the garden,

0:06:10 > 0:06:12thinking, "I'll find a home for that."

0:06:12 > 0:06:15But then it tipped with rain and then cats came and lay on it.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17- Right.- And it's been in the garden all summer.- Wow.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20"Wow" is right, Jay.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23This chair has most definitely been on a journey.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28If it's all right with you, what I'd like to do is take this

0:06:28 > 0:06:29and, if we get a chance to transform it,

0:06:29 > 0:06:32- come back and show you exactly what we've done.- Oh, yeah.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34- Would that be cool? - That would be really good.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36I think Gemma is quite happy

0:06:36 > 0:06:39that this chair won't be going in the tip.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43I feel very good about Jay having taken away my old chair.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45I'm hoping, cos it is a really lovely shape,

0:06:45 > 0:06:48and I know it is, but I just don't have the wherewithal to do it -

0:06:48 > 0:06:51I'm hoping that it will turn into something really funky.

0:06:51 > 0:06:57I think the possibility of funkiness making an appearance is very high.

0:06:57 > 0:07:011950s armchair, wingback style, which is that bit there.

0:07:01 > 0:07:02But you can see

0:07:02 > 0:07:04the cats have had a brilliant time on this,

0:07:04 > 0:07:07getting their claws into it and really pulling at this fabric.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09But the fabric is still going strong,

0:07:09 > 0:07:12so what I think needs to happen with this one

0:07:12 > 0:07:14is it just needs to have a recover.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16I know an upholsterer who's a very cool cat

0:07:16 > 0:07:19- who would love to get their claws into this one.- He's not lying.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25Meet Ray Clarke, upholsterer extraordinaire.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29Ray made a name for himself in the world of fashion design,

0:07:29 > 0:07:33before discovering his love of vintage furniture.

0:07:33 > 0:07:38His fresh, modern designs mix practicality, comfort and luxury.

0:07:43 > 0:07:47I never intended to become an upholsterer at the beginning.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50It wasn't the thing I set out to do.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52I suppose you could say upholstery found ME.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00With my creative background in fashion design and textile design,

0:08:00 > 0:08:03I was able to use those skills and redirect them

0:08:03 > 0:08:04and now this is all I do.

0:08:04 > 0:08:09I just give birth to chairs. I love them, yeah.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11Well, that's great news, Ray,

0:08:11 > 0:08:15because we have a chair for you that needs some serious TLC.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27Two items loaded into the Money For Nothing van.

0:08:27 > 0:08:32Now it's time for Jay to search for his own pound-making project.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34Watch out, people.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Oh, that's a good one! That's a good one.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41See, that's better than therapy, that is. That's what you need.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43That may be so, Jay,

0:08:43 > 0:08:47but what we really need is for you to find an item for yourself.

0:08:48 > 0:08:53And Kevin might be the guy who puts a nice offer on the table for you.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57- How we doing? Are you all right? - Yeah, fine, thank you very much.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59This is quite nice. It's like going shopping.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01- Sorry for rummaging in your boot. - You're absolutely fine.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04- You help yourself. - That's quite nice. I do like those.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08- Hold on, is that a table in there as well?- Yeah.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10I'll put these to one side and then have a look at that.

0:09:13 > 0:09:17That's nice. So, Kev, why are you throwing away this table?

0:09:17 > 0:09:19- All this belongs to my mother-in-law.- OK.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22And she's moving house, we've stuck her in a bungalow,

0:09:22 > 0:09:24- and I'm clearing out the garage. - Cool, so how old is this?

0:09:24 > 0:09:26How old does it go back?

0:09:26 > 0:09:29- Ooh, judging by the look of it, I'd say it was about the '60s.- OK.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32That's a really solid bit of table. Is it all right if I can have that?

0:09:32 > 0:09:35- Course it is.- Yeah?- Absolutely. - Are you sure?- Yeah.- Cool.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37Nice blag, Jay.

0:09:37 > 0:09:42That's a cracking blank canvas to let your imagination run riot.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44What I'm going to do, Kev, if it's all right with you,

0:09:44 > 0:09:46I'm going to stay in contact and if I decide to do something

0:09:46 > 0:09:48with this or we get something sorted,

0:09:48 > 0:09:51I'll let you know exactly what we've done. Is that cool?

0:09:51 > 0:09:53- Yeah, absolutely.- Nice one. Thanks for that.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55- No problem, nice to talk to you. - Likewise.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57Thank you, kind sir.

0:09:57 > 0:10:01Any thoughts about what the future might hold for your little cast-off?

0:10:01 > 0:10:02I think it's really good

0:10:02 > 0:10:05that somebody's actually going to take some of this stuff away.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07I was feeling a bit guilty putting it in the car

0:10:07 > 0:10:09to bring it to the tip, just to throw it away,

0:10:09 > 0:10:13so I would have thought that a good job on it, clean it all up,

0:10:13 > 0:10:16sort it out, maybe change the colour of it or whatever,

0:10:16 > 0:10:20that can give somebody a useful table and last for years to come.

0:10:20 > 0:10:21Indeed.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23I'm really chuffed I was able to save this.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26It's got two things that I really do love.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30One is Formica from the 1950s, '60s. And also, it's got some sexy legs.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33The legs are tapered and they just look beautiful.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36But I have to be able to turn this into a profit

0:10:36 > 0:10:38and I believe I can do something really special with this,

0:10:38 > 0:10:40so let's wait and see.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43I very much look forward to it, Jay.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48There you have it. Three items found.

0:10:49 > 0:10:53Daniel will get on the case with Tim and Christiane's trunk.

0:10:53 > 0:10:57Ray will tackle Gemma's wingback chair.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00And Jay's got a good feeling about Kevin's table.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03That's three incredible items that I've saved from the crusher.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06Now what I've got to do is make them desirable and worth a bob or two.

0:11:14 > 0:11:18Stratford in East London is home to a growing number of artists.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20It's also where screen printer

0:11:20 > 0:11:23and wallpaper designer Daniel has a studio.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26I hope that Jay's brought me something interesting.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28I know that he's aware of what I do

0:11:28 > 0:11:31and that my comfort zone is printing

0:11:31 > 0:11:33and putting imagery onto stuff.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39I've travelled all this way to East London with my trusty case

0:11:39 > 0:11:40to see my main man, Daniel.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43I've got some ideas for this and I know he's just person

0:11:43 > 0:11:45to actually turn them into reality.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49- HE KNOCKS ON DOOR - Hello.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51- Hey, Jay, how you doing? - You all right?

0:11:51 > 0:11:54- Yeah, not bad. Good to see you.- Got you a little present.- Oh, right, OK.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56- Let's have a look at this thing.- OK.

0:11:56 > 0:12:01- It's really light.- It is quite light, actually. What do you think?

0:12:01 > 0:12:04- Well, it...- It's nice, innit?

0:12:04 > 0:12:08- It's drawn on.- It is drawn on, yeah.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11It fooled me as well. I thought that was all hand-stitched.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14- That's quite amazing. - Yeah, it's drawn on.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18Hmm, so the case isn't quite as authentic as it first seemed.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21Any other potential pitfalls, boys?

0:12:22 > 0:12:26- It's cardboard, isn't it? - It is, yeah. 100% cardboard.

0:12:26 > 0:12:27Genuine cardboard.

0:12:27 > 0:12:32- It's like a breakfast cereal box or something like that.- There you go.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35- Um...- I wouldn't have thought of it like that.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37A breakfast cereal box with two wooden bits on top of it.

0:12:39 > 0:12:43Suitcases date right back to Victorian times.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46As car and air travel grew more popular,

0:12:46 > 0:12:48different types of cases evolved.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52Lightweight cardboard ones were most probably designed

0:12:52 > 0:12:55to be lifted easily in and out of vehicles,

0:12:55 > 0:12:57while more solid structured cases

0:12:57 > 0:13:00would be used for taking abroad on holiday.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03- I was thinking it can be turned into a table or something.- Yeah.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05Like a coffee table, something like that,

0:13:05 > 0:13:08where it's just keeping the kind of the character.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10I think that sounds interesting

0:13:10 > 0:13:13- because people like cases for that they are.- Yeah.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15And then you don't want to detract

0:13:15 > 0:13:18from the interesting piece that it is.

0:13:18 > 0:13:22So, I think I'll try and make it continue to look like a case

0:13:22 > 0:13:26but maybe give it a bit of a foundation inside.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29Yes, please, cos it is, as you said, it's just a cereal box, isn't it?

0:13:29 > 0:13:33- It is.- That's all it is. And that's not really durable at all.- No, no.

0:13:33 > 0:13:37I think we're almost there. The only thing we're not on is the price.

0:13:37 > 0:13:42- I think I can do it at £185. - £185, did you say?- I did.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44- There we go, sir.- Brilliant. - I'm getting in there quick.- OK.

0:13:44 > 0:13:49Thank you. That's... I'm a happy bumblebee, I must say.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52As am I, Jay, as am I.

0:13:52 > 0:13:56Why don't we buzz off and let Daniel do his thing?

0:13:57 > 0:13:59I just knew it! Daniel's the man.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02What he's going to do with his hand-printed wallpaper,

0:14:02 > 0:14:05he's going to turn that cardboard into something really special.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07I can't wait to see the end result.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09It could be very special indeed, Jay.

0:14:09 > 0:14:16Daniel has a budget of £185 to give this weary traveller a new identity.

0:14:16 > 0:14:20But with material as fragile as this,

0:14:20 > 0:14:23could it all come apart at those drawn-on seams?

0:14:28 > 0:14:32Staying in the creative and hip world that is East London,

0:14:32 > 0:14:34it's time to pay a visit to Poplar,

0:14:34 > 0:14:39where upholsterer Ray is awaiting Jay and he's excited.

0:14:39 > 0:14:41I've always wanted to work with Jay.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44I love his eye for colour and detail.

0:14:44 > 0:14:45He's bringing a piece of furniture

0:14:45 > 0:14:47that the pair of us are going to work on.

0:14:47 > 0:14:50I'm over the moon. I can't be happy enough.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54This is like, yeah... Let's see what we can do together.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57Jay meets Ray. Let's bring it on.

0:14:57 > 0:15:02- Yeah.- Well, Ray, ten out of ten for enthusiasm.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05Ray and Jay together at last.

0:15:05 > 0:15:09Wow, it's a good thing this one's on wheels. It is really, really heavy.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11So, I'm really chuffed now that I've brought this

0:15:11 > 0:15:14to my old hunting ground, East London.

0:15:14 > 0:15:15This is where Ray's new place is,

0:15:15 > 0:15:18so I'm really chuffed that he's going to take this one on.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21I've got some ideas of what I believe he could do to this

0:15:21 > 0:15:24but I'm sure he's going to have some too, so the two of us together -

0:15:24 > 0:15:26pff - it's going to be an amalgamation of creativity.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28Let's go and take a look.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33- JAY KNOCKS ON DOOR - Hello, Ray. Are you in there?

0:15:33 > 0:15:36- Yeah. Hello, Jay. - Long time, no see, mate.

0:15:36 > 0:15:40- All right? Good to see you.- You good?- I'm good, mate. Looking good.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42- Thank you, sir, so are you. - Oh, there we go.

0:15:42 > 0:15:44I'm looking pretty good myself.

0:15:44 > 0:15:49Unlike this chair, which was left in the rain with some cats.

0:15:50 > 0:15:51Oh.

0:15:51 > 0:15:53So, what do you think of her?

0:15:53 > 0:15:56Oh, er... Eurgh.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59- Beautiful, beautiful. - It is, isn't it?

0:15:59 > 0:16:00Lovely shape.

0:16:00 > 0:16:04- Oh!- You're a brave man.- Yeah.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07- I would not do that. I would not be smelling that.- I've done it now.

0:16:07 > 0:16:12- Looks like it's got... Can I rip this down?- Yeah.

0:16:13 > 0:16:14Oh, boy!

0:16:14 > 0:16:19- That's a nice spring unit.- Yeah. - All in really good nick.- Yeah.

0:16:19 > 0:16:23- None of them are broken, which is quite cool.- Or rusted or misshapen.

0:16:24 > 0:16:26So, that could save us on some of the money, couldn't it, eh?

0:16:26 > 0:16:30- You reckon?- Of course I reckon! I'm here to do a deal, mate.- All right.

0:16:30 > 0:16:31I need to sell this.

0:16:31 > 0:16:36So, despite the smell and damp, it looks like this chair is saveable.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39It's a lovely shape, Jay. I'm thinking let's keep this simple.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42I'm with you, 110%. Now, this is a classic.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44- As you can see, these lines are really nice.- Yeah.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46Lovely piping on here,

0:16:46 > 0:16:48so let's bring it right up to the 21st century.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50What kind of fabrics are you thinking of?

0:16:50 > 0:16:53- Cos I'm thinking maybe wool. - I love wool.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55I love wool or felt and the contrast.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57And I'd probably add in a bit of velvet in there.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00- I like that kind of luxurious feel. - Short-pile velvet for the piping.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03- Definitely short-pile.- Yeah? - Yeah, and I think, on this one,

0:17:03 > 0:17:06it looks like it belongs next to a fireplace,

0:17:06 > 0:17:09so the more cosiness we could create within this chair

0:17:09 > 0:17:11- and within the fabric, then we're laughing.- Yeah.

0:17:12 > 0:17:16Oh, I can already hear the crackling of the fire, gentlemen.

0:17:18 > 0:17:22Short-pile velvet is not only soft and luxurious to the touch,

0:17:22 > 0:17:25but adds an air of sophistication.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28- So, we're talking about modern reupholstery...- Yeah.

0:17:28 > 0:17:33..using, like, some beautiful wools, some nice, subtle details,

0:17:33 > 0:17:37- do you know what I mean?- Yeah. - Nothing too crazy.- Yes.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40Just a nice, warm, considered piece

0:17:40 > 0:17:43that will just suit anyone's home, really.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46With the structure of the chair intact,

0:17:46 > 0:17:50it's all about keeping the design as simple as possible.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54Better still, Jay's got some surplus fabric,

0:17:54 > 0:17:57left from a previous job, to help save the pennies.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00And, on that note, what's the damage, Ray?

0:18:00 > 0:18:02I'm saying £750?

0:18:02 > 0:18:05I would say £675, and I'm going to give you the fabric

0:18:05 > 0:18:08and next time I see you, I'll bring you a cup of tea.

0:18:08 > 0:18:12- I think that's a good deal. - Yeah... But not Earl Grey, though.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15- OK.- OK?- Done.- Done.- Thank you, sir.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19Sounds like a good deal. Well done, boys.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21I know what Jay wants.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25This is going to turn out to be a really classic, beautiful,

0:18:25 > 0:18:29subtle but...considered piece.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31Wow, that's really special.

0:18:31 > 0:18:33I can't wait to see the end result of that.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35I knew I'd brought it to the right place.

0:18:35 > 0:18:39My ideas and Ray's ideas come together to make one special chair.

0:18:39 > 0:18:43I'm just hoping that we turn this one into a top cat again.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45Indeed, Jay.

0:18:46 > 0:18:50To transform the chair, Ray has a budget of £675,

0:18:50 > 0:18:53including the material from Jay.

0:18:53 > 0:18:57But has he underestimated the size of the task ahead?

0:19:04 > 0:19:08Wolverhampton in the West Midlands is a town with a rich history,

0:19:08 > 0:19:11from the woollen trade to coal mining,

0:19:11 > 0:19:14steel production and automobile manufacturing.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17Today, furniture designers and makers are adding

0:19:17 > 0:19:19their own story to the city.

0:19:20 > 0:19:22And it's where Jay has his workshop -

0:19:22 > 0:19:26a good place to tackle this interesting table.

0:19:26 > 0:19:31Formica is made of paper and it's layers and layers of thin paper,

0:19:31 > 0:19:33with a kind of resin in between it

0:19:33 > 0:19:37and then you have this protective layer on top,

0:19:37 > 0:19:40which gives it heat resistance and you can put your pots,

0:19:40 > 0:19:43and spillage, you can wipe them up. Really versatile.

0:19:43 > 0:19:48But, over the years, it starts to give way - as we all do.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50Speak for yourself, Jay!

0:19:52 > 0:19:55Jay's decided to add some serious colour to the table,

0:19:55 > 0:19:57using wallpaper and paint.

0:19:57 > 0:20:01I'm going to bring this table from the '50s to the 21st century,

0:20:01 > 0:20:04and with this colour combination, it's really going to pop.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08First things first, is to take it apart.

0:20:10 > 0:20:14In an ideal world, that should just lift off. Let's hope.

0:20:15 > 0:20:16Perfection.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21Next, it's time for some serious sanding.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28That's a lovely bit of beech, that is.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30And it's come up really, really nice.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33European beech is a particular favourite

0:20:33 > 0:20:36among those who regularly work with wood.

0:20:36 > 0:20:40Due to the closed porous cell structure of the species,

0:20:40 > 0:20:43a very high quality of finish can be achieved.

0:20:43 > 0:20:45So, one down, three more to go.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53With the legs sanded,

0:20:53 > 0:20:56it's time to prep the table top frame in the same manner.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02So, they're all sanded now.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05And I'm going to paint this a really vibrant orange.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07But I need to do an undercoat on that first.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09The outside is going to be black

0:21:09 > 0:21:13and the outside of this is going to be black. Let's get busy.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15I do like it when we get busy.

0:21:24 > 0:21:26Now, that's a colour, isn't it?!

0:21:26 > 0:21:29Putting my sunglasses on now, Jay. Carry on.

0:21:31 > 0:21:34I think it really, really does work.

0:21:34 > 0:21:39With the crazy colours applied, it's on with the wallpaper paste.

0:21:39 > 0:21:42This paste I've got is already mixed up,

0:21:42 > 0:21:46so I don't need to get water and mix it, like the old-fashioned way.

0:21:48 > 0:21:52Jay's colourful approach is definitely his signature look,

0:21:52 > 0:21:55but having only spent £10 so far,

0:21:55 > 0:22:00will this table be bright and beautiful or a total mishmash?

0:22:06 > 0:22:10Back in Stratford, designer Daniel is about to take

0:22:10 > 0:22:13the old blue suitcase on another journey -

0:22:13 > 0:22:16one that will transform it into a coffee table.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18It's a nice piece.

0:22:18 > 0:22:22It's got character and colour to it, but it's pretty rickety.

0:22:22 > 0:22:29So, what I'm going to do is line the inside with a wooden box, basically,

0:22:29 > 0:22:32like a skeleton inside, to give it some strength,

0:22:32 > 0:22:34some structure and some weight to it.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37That would give me something I could put the legs into underneath,

0:22:37 > 0:22:39through the bottom of the case.

0:22:39 > 0:22:43And it'll also be an area that I can apply my wallpaper to as well,

0:22:43 > 0:22:47so we can put some pattern into there and make it

0:22:47 > 0:22:49a bit more interesting on the inside as well.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53To get this coffee table off the ground,

0:22:53 > 0:22:58Daniel strips down the case and begins the strengthening process.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01It's quite challenging because the...

0:23:02 > 0:23:05It's quite brittle but I have to be quite forceful

0:23:05 > 0:23:07to wrench these bits off

0:23:07 > 0:23:11and I just don't want to tear the whole thing in half.

0:23:12 > 0:23:18To strengthen the case, Daniel cuts the ply to size and drops it in.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21Now for the sides.

0:23:23 > 0:23:28OK, so you can see I need to do some more adjustments on the sides

0:23:28 > 0:23:31but, once that's in, we've got a good solid base

0:23:31 > 0:23:34that we can screw the legs onto.

0:23:34 > 0:23:37I think it's going to be a lot more sturdy.

0:23:37 > 0:23:42With reinforcement a success, it's on to papering the insides.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53I'm just making up a small amount of wallpaper paste,

0:23:53 > 0:23:56so that I've got enough to line the suitcase,

0:23:56 > 0:24:01or the panelling that I fitted out on the inside of the suitcase.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04So, I'm not going to need very much, so there should be enough in here.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12I'm going to start with doing the base.

0:24:14 > 0:24:18- OK.- I had my doubts about this one, but do you know what?

0:24:18 > 0:24:20It might just work.

0:24:20 > 0:24:25Carry on, Daniel. You're definitely on the case. Oh, dear.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36Barely three miles away, in Poplar,

0:24:36 > 0:24:40Ray is about to take on the old wingback chair.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42- Eurgh! - HE COUGHS

0:24:42 > 0:24:47Eurgh! This is going to be a filthy rip-down. Filthy rip-down.

0:24:47 > 0:24:50Oh, we like filthy rip-downs on this show.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01Oh, I really hope there's nothing live in there.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03It's making all kinds of funny noises.

0:25:10 > 0:25:14Oh, I've just seen a woodlouse in there. Oh!

0:25:14 > 0:25:20And it's crawling, which means eggs, which means larvae,

0:25:20 > 0:25:22which means woodworm.

0:25:23 > 0:25:25Let's continue on.

0:25:26 > 0:25:30Although harmless, these slaters, sow bugs and pill bugs,

0:25:30 > 0:25:35which woodlice are also known as, like to feed upon rotten wood.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38There are sprays and powders available

0:25:38 > 0:25:40to neutralise the unwelcome visitors,

0:25:40 > 0:25:44but the best thing a homeowner can do is simply sweep them up

0:25:44 > 0:25:48and put them back outside at a safe distance from your home.

0:25:48 > 0:25:52I'm trying to save their life. I know they're woodlice, but...

0:25:52 > 0:25:54Good man, Ray.

0:25:58 > 0:26:00In view of the state of this chair,

0:26:00 > 0:26:03it's going to look like a complete strip down to the frame and rebuild.

0:26:03 > 0:26:07I can't risk re-covering any part of this upholstery

0:26:07 > 0:26:10while this infestation has occurred.

0:26:10 > 0:26:15It's going to mean more labour and more time, but it's got to be done.

0:26:15 > 0:26:19And at the end of the day, Jay'll be happy to sit in a chair

0:26:19 > 0:26:22that won't be crawling with woodlice, so...

0:26:22 > 0:26:26I reckon you're right about that, Ray.

0:26:27 > 0:26:32But, with some unexpected friends adding more time to Ray's task,

0:26:32 > 0:26:34any future prospects of making a profit

0:26:34 > 0:26:37have just got that bit smaller.

0:26:38 > 0:26:39Ooh.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49In Wolverhampton, Jay's hard at work

0:26:49 > 0:26:52putting the finishing touches to the Formica table.

0:26:52 > 0:26:54A little hair's dropped into that.

0:26:56 > 0:26:57You might not have seen it but I did.

0:26:57 > 0:27:01It's the little touches that make all the difference.

0:27:01 > 0:27:03When Jay picked up the table,

0:27:03 > 0:27:07it was moments away from being consigned to the tip.

0:27:07 > 0:27:09# One, two, one, two, three, four...

0:27:11 > 0:27:13# Fill me up

0:27:15 > 0:27:17# Fill me up... #

0:27:17 > 0:27:21But Jay saw its potential, stripping it right back,

0:27:21 > 0:27:24giving it some care, attention, a whole lot of love

0:27:24 > 0:27:28and, more importantly, lots of wonderful colour.

0:27:28 > 0:27:32It is unrecognisable and it'll be a long time

0:27:32 > 0:27:35before it faces any more trips to the tip.

0:27:35 > 0:27:39The orange and black, I know just works really, really well together.

0:27:39 > 0:27:42Hopefully, someone else will see the same thing that I do,

0:27:42 > 0:27:45which is this is a gem of a design.

0:27:45 > 0:27:47The legs, very contemporary.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49The colour just oozes,

0:27:49 > 0:27:52and the top now - come on - what's not to love on this one?

0:27:52 > 0:27:55Very little, Jay, very little indeed.

0:27:57 > 0:28:00Ready for a new home and to see some dinner parties

0:28:00 > 0:28:02and it needs a little bit of dressing

0:28:02 > 0:28:04before I take the pictures and post it up online.

0:28:06 > 0:28:08Adding a bit of dressing is always a good thing

0:28:08 > 0:28:11when it comes to netting a sale.

0:28:11 > 0:28:13I think that is a picture.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17It would help if I had my phone to take a picture.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24Jay first caught sight of the table

0:28:24 > 0:28:26whilst Kevin was being a dutiful son-in-law.

0:28:26 > 0:28:28- All this belongs to my mother-in-law.- OK.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31And she's moving house, we've stuck her in a bungalow

0:28:31 > 0:28:32and I'm clearing out the garage.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35Luckily, Jay could see a bright future for the table

0:28:35 > 0:28:38and, with a colourful flick of the wrist...

0:28:41 > 0:28:46Jay did eventually find his phone to post piccies of the table online.

0:28:46 > 0:28:49And it sold to Petit Miracle Interiors,

0:28:49 > 0:28:52a furniture restoration shop in London.

0:28:52 > 0:28:54General manager Kate is a fan.

0:28:54 > 0:28:57The thing that originally caught my eye

0:28:57 > 0:28:59was the use of colour. It's really attractive.

0:28:59 > 0:29:02It's not necessarily a mix of colours that I would put together

0:29:02 > 0:29:05but I think, when you look at the table,

0:29:05 > 0:29:07you can really tell how beautiful they look.

0:29:07 > 0:29:11And it's quite unusual and that's what we like to look for as well.

0:29:11 > 0:29:16Now Jay is en route to Kevin in Rugby to hand over some cash.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18But how much?

0:29:18 > 0:29:19JAY KNOCKS ON DOOR

0:29:21 > 0:29:23- Hello, Jay.- How you doing, Kevin? You all right?

0:29:23 > 0:29:26- Good, thank you. You?- Not too bad. - Nice to see you.- Likewise.

0:29:26 > 0:29:28Do you remember the old table that you brought along

0:29:28 > 0:29:30- to the recycling centre? - I certainly do, yeah.

0:29:30 > 0:29:32- And it belonged to your...? - Mother-in-law.

0:29:32 > 0:29:36- Well, I took it on as a project myself.- Yeah.- And I transformed it.

0:29:36 > 0:29:38- OK.- Kept it as a table though.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41And transformed it into...

0:29:41 > 0:29:46Oh, yeah, wow! That is so different. Now that IS a transformation.

0:29:46 > 0:29:49- It is a bit, isn't it? - Yeah, it's just incredible.

0:29:49 > 0:29:54- My signature is, like, some bright vibrancy colour.- I can see THAT!

0:29:54 > 0:29:58- And I'm pleased to tell you that we've sold it.- Right.

0:29:58 > 0:30:00And I have some profit for you.

0:30:00 > 0:30:04- So, I've got £125... - Oh, my goodness me!

0:30:04 > 0:30:07- ..for yourself, sir. - Thank you very much.- All right?- Wow!

0:30:07 > 0:30:09Any ideas of what you might do with that?

0:30:09 > 0:30:12- Well, we recently had a little granddaughter.- All right.

0:30:12 > 0:30:15And we've spoken to the mother-in-law, so between us,

0:30:15 > 0:30:21- we're going to buy something for the baby.- Ah, bless. That's perfect.

0:30:21 > 0:30:25- Yeah.- All right.- All right, lovely. Nice to see you.- Likewise.

0:30:25 > 0:30:27- Thank you very much. - And you never know,

0:30:27 > 0:30:30- I might see you at the recycling centre again.- You never know.

0:30:30 > 0:30:32- Right.- Take care. Bye-bye. - See you later.

0:30:34 > 0:30:38Transforming that 1950s kitchen table was such a joy

0:30:38 > 0:30:42and it's a pleasure to know that the profit we made is going towards

0:30:42 > 0:30:44a present for Kevin's brand-new granddaughter.

0:30:46 > 0:30:49Jay spent £10 on materials.

0:30:49 > 0:30:53The interiors boutique bought it for £135,

0:30:53 > 0:30:58leaving a £125 profit for Kevin's granddaughter.

0:30:58 > 0:31:00Excellent!

0:31:07 > 0:31:09In Stratford, East London,

0:31:09 > 0:31:13Daniel is giving his coffee table a final polish.

0:31:13 > 0:31:16I hope that Jay likes what we've done with it.

0:31:16 > 0:31:18I think it looks very different to how it came here

0:31:18 > 0:31:21but it still holds some of the character

0:31:21 > 0:31:24and some of the telltale signs of wear

0:31:24 > 0:31:26and the fact that it's had a life.

0:31:26 > 0:31:30I'm back to see Daniel, to pick up that sweet little suitcase.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32Hopefully, he's kept some of the charm

0:31:32 > 0:31:34and added his own little twist to it.

0:31:34 > 0:31:37Back at the tip, Jay spotted this old case

0:31:37 > 0:31:39about to make its final journey.

0:31:47 > 0:31:52And boy, oh, boy, this time it's travelled first class.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55It was on the verge of falling apart,

0:31:55 > 0:32:00but Daniel gave it a new solid interior and built it back up

0:32:00 > 0:32:02by adding funky modern legs,

0:32:02 > 0:32:04a beautiful design

0:32:04 > 0:32:07and he's topped it off with solid glass.

0:32:09 > 0:32:13There are coffee tables and then there are coffee tables by Daniel.

0:32:13 > 0:32:14What a cracking result.

0:32:14 > 0:32:18- Hello?- Hey. - How you doing, sir?- How you doing?

0:32:18 > 0:32:21Oh, that looks special!

0:32:21 > 0:32:24- Oh, that is nice. - I'm glad you like it.- Whoo!

0:32:24 > 0:32:27I wanted to keep some of the outer

0:32:27 > 0:32:31- because there was so little of the thing in the first place.- Yeah.

0:32:31 > 0:32:34I didn't want to do too much to that

0:32:34 > 0:32:38but then the inside is, obviously, a real contrast to that.

0:32:38 > 0:32:41Oh, it's... It's cool!

0:32:43 > 0:32:45Cool is a bit of an understatement, Jay.

0:32:45 > 0:32:47I love this transformation,

0:32:47 > 0:32:50especially considering the fragility of the suitcase

0:32:50 > 0:32:52when it was handed over to Daniel.

0:32:52 > 0:32:54That was the biggest challenge -

0:32:54 > 0:32:57to make the case sturdy

0:32:57 > 0:33:00and to give it, basically, some skeleton inside.

0:33:00 > 0:33:02Rigidity, yeah. I really like it.

0:33:02 > 0:33:07But has Daniel stayed within the budget of £185?

0:33:07 > 0:33:10- Did we come in on budget?- Yeah.

0:33:10 > 0:33:12It was, as ever, more time than expense, really.

0:33:12 > 0:33:17I think you've made such a quirky little coffee table,

0:33:17 > 0:33:21with storage, and I've just got to sell it. So, thank you, sir.

0:33:21 > 0:33:26- Cheers, Jay.- I'll be off. All right? - Take care.- Take care.- Thank you.

0:33:26 > 0:33:28Wow, what a transformation!

0:33:28 > 0:33:32Daniel adding his printed designs inside that little suitcase

0:33:32 > 0:33:36has just made sure it's ready for another journey.

0:33:36 > 0:33:38I'm glad that he saw that what we'd done with it

0:33:38 > 0:33:42maintained that character but gave it something fresh and new as well,

0:33:42 > 0:33:46so, yeah, I'm glad he was pleased, yeah.

0:33:50 > 0:33:53The blue suitcase caught Jay's eye

0:33:53 > 0:33:57when Tim and Christiane decided it was time for a clear-out.

0:33:57 > 0:33:59- It's rusty, it's rusty. - Oh, it's rusty.

0:33:59 > 0:34:02- You can't use it.- OK you can't use it.- And we're decluttering.

0:34:02 > 0:34:04With the suitcase saved from the tip,

0:34:04 > 0:34:08Jay knew that Dan was the man for the job, and he was right.

0:34:11 > 0:34:14The coffee table was snapped up

0:34:14 > 0:34:18by a vintage and retro home furnishings company in Shropshire.

0:34:20 > 0:34:24Now Jay is off to Walsall to visit Tim and Christiane

0:34:24 > 0:34:26and hand over some cash.

0:34:28 > 0:34:30Wow, now, that's a knocker, innit?

0:34:32 > 0:34:35- Hello!- Hello.- Hello, Christiane. Are you all right?- Yes, thank you.

0:34:35 > 0:34:37- How you doing, Tim? All right? - Yeah, well, thanks.

0:34:37 > 0:34:40- So, how are you guys doing?- Very well, very well.- Very well?- Yeah.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43Do you remember the suitcase that you guys brought down

0:34:43 > 0:34:47- to the recycling centre?- We do. - And fond memories you have of that?

0:34:47 > 0:34:50- Fonder than ever.- Oh, bless you.

0:34:50 > 0:34:53Well, I took it to a young designer called Daniel Heath,

0:34:53 > 0:34:56who worked his magic on it and turned it into...

0:34:56 > 0:35:00- Oh, wow!- Let's see if I can get it...- Wow!- Oh, wow!

0:35:00 > 0:35:04- It's a coffee table.- A coffee table with glass on top and sides.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07- Beautiful! It's very smart. - It's amazing.- Very smart.

0:35:07 > 0:35:09- It's classy, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:35:09 > 0:35:12So, this is an art deco-inspired pattern by Daniel

0:35:12 > 0:35:15and what he had to do, because the suitcase is made of cardboard,

0:35:15 > 0:35:20he had to strengthen it inside for the glass to rest on something

0:35:20 > 0:35:22and also the legs to be screwed in.

0:35:22 > 0:35:24Cos it couldn't be screwed into cardboard.

0:35:24 > 0:35:27- It certainly looks sturdy now, doesn't it?- It's very sturdy.

0:35:27 > 0:35:30- You can still see it's very much a suitcase.- Yeah.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32I think it's a work of art, to tell the honest truth.

0:35:32 > 0:35:35- It is a work of art. - With the stickers.

0:35:35 > 0:35:37The stickers are very important.

0:35:37 > 0:35:41That combination between the really stylish art deco lining

0:35:41 > 0:35:44and your sticker on the side is...just prefect.

0:35:44 > 0:35:46- It makes you smile then, doesn't it?- It does.

0:35:46 > 0:35:49- And I think the stickers are cool in their own right.- Of course they are.

0:35:49 > 0:35:52- They're not art deco, but they are very cool.- I thought they were cool.

0:35:52 > 0:35:53- I thought they were happy.- Yeah.

0:35:53 > 0:35:56And you'll be pleased to know that we was able to sell that

0:35:56 > 0:36:00and I have...some profit for you.

0:36:00 > 0:36:03- Oh!- I have...- Some good news today.

0:36:03 > 0:36:07- Some good news. £95.- Wow!- Wow!

0:36:07 > 0:36:11- For doing nothing. For giving you a suitcase at the tip.- Yes.

0:36:11 > 0:36:13- And seeing a beautiful product like that.- Exactly.

0:36:13 > 0:36:16- What are you likely to do with £95? - I've spent it already.

0:36:16 > 0:36:19But I won't let you spend it. It was MY suitcase.

0:36:19 > 0:36:21I think it will go to children.

0:36:21 > 0:36:23We support some children abroad in developing countries.

0:36:23 > 0:36:27- We have four, so we can add something to their birthdays.- Yes.

0:36:27 > 0:36:29And then we'll have a drink with our own children in England.

0:36:29 > 0:36:32Ah, that's nice, that's nice. Bless you.

0:36:32 > 0:36:35So, that's a good cause and I'm going to love you and leave you.

0:36:35 > 0:36:38- So, thank you for the suitcase.- No, thank YOU. Very exciting, thank you.

0:36:38 > 0:36:41We'll never go to the tip again!

0:36:41 > 0:36:43Oh, bless you. You take care now. Bye-bye.

0:36:45 > 0:36:48Christiane and Tim were over the moon with that transformation

0:36:48 > 0:36:50and who could blame them?

0:36:50 > 0:36:55Daniel charged £185 to work his magic.

0:36:55 > 0:36:59The vintage store bought it for £280,

0:36:59 > 0:37:03leaving a £95 profit for Tim and Christiane.

0:37:10 > 0:37:15Back in East London, Ray is making some last-minute adjustments

0:37:15 > 0:37:17to the wingback chair.

0:37:17 > 0:37:20And there's not a whiff of cats to be had anywhere.

0:37:20 > 0:37:24'Overall, I'm really pleased with the finished look.'

0:37:24 > 0:37:26It's a pretty nice solid piece there,

0:37:26 > 0:37:28so, yeah, I just hope Jay likes it.

0:37:29 > 0:37:31I'm here to pick that old red chair up from Ray.

0:37:31 > 0:37:34Hopefully, he's given me a very slick, cool,

0:37:34 > 0:37:36contemporary transformation.

0:37:37 > 0:37:40Back at the tip, Jay took a shine to a chair

0:37:40 > 0:37:43that had reached the end of the road.

0:37:53 > 0:37:56Now it's a chair with a whole new beginning.

0:37:56 > 0:38:00Ray has made us very proud with this one.

0:38:00 > 0:38:03After requiring a complete strip down,

0:38:03 > 0:38:05as well as some pest control,

0:38:05 > 0:38:07this really is a tremendous result.

0:38:07 > 0:38:11That short-pile velvet from Jay works perfectly

0:38:11 > 0:38:15and Ray's stitching, detail and overall craftsmanship

0:38:15 > 0:38:18is as sophisticated as promised.

0:38:18 > 0:38:20Nice one, Ray!

0:38:20 > 0:38:23- How you doing, Ray? - How's it going, man?

0:38:23 > 0:38:25Cor blimey, you've got some work in here now haven't you?

0:38:25 > 0:38:29- Yeah, I'm very busy.- Very busy. Whoa-oa! Look at that, mate!

0:38:29 > 0:38:32- It's all right, innit?- It's a bit more than all right!- Yeah.

0:38:32 > 0:38:34That is nice!

0:38:34 > 0:38:37Very nice. Very nice indeed.

0:38:37 > 0:38:43I think what you've done is just... It works, 100% works.

0:38:43 > 0:38:46You have most definitely surpassed yourself on this one, Ray.

0:38:46 > 0:38:49- Thank you. - I'm telling, you this is supercool.

0:38:49 > 0:38:52- I wanted something slick, cool, contemporary.- Yeah.

0:38:52 > 0:38:54And you've given it to me.

0:38:55 > 0:38:58Thank you, Ray. You are most kind.

0:38:59 > 0:39:04Now, more importantly, is Ray within his £675 budget?

0:39:04 > 0:39:08- Tell me you've come in on budget. - Mate, we've come in on budget.

0:39:08 > 0:39:10- Thank you, sir!- Do you know what I mean?- That's good.

0:39:10 > 0:39:15- I'm really glad of that. That's, oh, made my day.- Cool. Wicked.

0:39:15 > 0:39:19- So, your work's done.- Mm-hmm. - Now my work begins.- Yeah.- All right.

0:39:19 > 0:39:22- So, thank you.- Thank you.- And I'll see you again soon.- Nice one, Jay.

0:39:22 > 0:39:24- Take care, Ray.- Take care. Bye-bye.

0:39:26 > 0:39:29Overall, a tremendous result.

0:39:29 > 0:39:32Ray has definitely pulled this one out the bag.

0:39:32 > 0:39:34What he did was turn it into something cool,

0:39:34 > 0:39:37contemporary and very stylish.

0:39:37 > 0:39:39All I've got to do is sell it now.

0:39:39 > 0:39:41I'm so pleased that he likes it.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44I kind of got the impression, got the idea of what Jay was after,

0:39:44 > 0:39:47and I'm glad I've been able to deliver it for him.

0:39:47 > 0:39:50What a transformation it is

0:39:50 > 0:39:53and it all began at Walsall Recycling Centre.

0:39:53 > 0:39:56- How you doing? I'm Jay.- Hello. - You all right?- Yes.- Good on you.

0:39:56 > 0:40:00- What you doing with this? Obviously, you're throwing it away.- Yeah.

0:40:00 > 0:40:02The red chair was spotted by Jay

0:40:02 > 0:40:05as Gemma was about to put it out of its misery.

0:40:05 > 0:40:08So, I've been really trimming everything back completely,

0:40:08 > 0:40:10so I got rid of it, put it in the garden,

0:40:10 > 0:40:12thinking, "I'll find a home for that."

0:40:12 > 0:40:15But then it tipped with rain and then cats came and lay on it

0:40:15 > 0:40:16and it's been in the garden all summer.

0:40:17 > 0:40:20Yeah, it was in a right mess,

0:40:20 > 0:40:23but Jay knew that Ray had the skills to save it.

0:40:24 > 0:40:26From the stinky cats...

0:40:27 > 0:40:29..to the cat's meow.

0:40:32 > 0:40:37Now Jay is in Walsall to see Gemma to show her the transformation.

0:40:42 > 0:40:45- Hello, Gemma.- Hello, Jay.- How you doing?- All right.- You all right?

0:40:45 > 0:40:48So, do you remember the red chair you brought to us

0:40:48 > 0:40:51- at the recycling centre?- I do. - If I remember rightly,

0:40:51 > 0:40:54you had it outside or did you have it in the garden?

0:40:54 > 0:40:58It was, for a while, unfortunately. Got a little bit mouldy.

0:40:58 > 0:41:01- And the cats were...- The cats completely scratched it to pieces,

0:41:01 > 0:41:03which is why I took it out to the garden.

0:41:03 > 0:41:05And you was a bit reluctant, if I remember rightly,

0:41:05 > 0:41:08to take it to the dump. You was going to do it up yourself.

0:41:08 > 0:41:11- I really hate throwing things away. I've been a hoarder for years.- Yeah.

0:41:11 > 0:41:15And recently, um, I've been trying to get rid of being a hoarder.

0:41:15 > 0:41:19As you see, I live in a small house and you can't keep everything.

0:41:19 > 0:41:22No, you can't. What I did was I took it to a guy called Ray Clarke...

0:41:22 > 0:41:24- OK.- ..who transformed your red chair.

0:41:24 > 0:41:27And, if you remember, that was what it looks like before.

0:41:27 > 0:41:31- Yeah, I remember.- Yeah, red, cats tearing at it.- Scratched to pieces.

0:41:31 > 0:41:34Oh, bless. And this is what he's done to it.

0:41:35 > 0:41:40- Ooh, I like! It's kind of a bit asymmetric, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:41:40 > 0:41:43- Oh, it's really beautiful. It's really stylish.- You like it, yeah?

0:41:43 > 0:41:46- Yeah. It's really masculine. - It is a bit.

0:41:46 > 0:41:49- It's supposed to be metrosexual, is what it's meant to be.- Oh, OK.- Yeah.

0:41:49 > 0:41:52I still wouldn't let it near my cats.

0:41:52 > 0:41:54- I'm sad to say that we wasn't able to sell it.- OK.

0:41:54 > 0:41:57But I don't think it's not going to sell.

0:41:57 > 0:41:59- I know it's going to sell, basically.- OK.

0:41:59 > 0:42:01So, as soon as it does, I will get back to you

0:42:01 > 0:42:03- and bring you the profit. - OK.- Is that cool?

0:42:03 > 0:42:06- That's great.- No problem. - Thanks, Jay.- Thanks a lot.

0:42:06 > 0:42:07- You take care.- Bye.- Bye-bye.

0:42:10 > 0:42:14I think Gemma was rather pleased with that transformation

0:42:14 > 0:42:17and she's got me thinking. Is my taste a bit too masculine?

0:42:17 > 0:42:19Something to think about.

0:42:22 > 0:42:27Ray charged £675 to work his magic.

0:42:27 > 0:42:32This wonderful transformation has yet to be discovered by a buyer

0:42:32 > 0:42:35but Jay is confident

0:42:35 > 0:42:38that Gemma won't be waiting too long for the profit.

0:42:44 > 0:42:48Jay salvaged three items that were destined for the dump.

0:42:48 > 0:42:52Daniel worked wonders with the blue suitcase,

0:42:52 > 0:42:56Ray showed his quality with the wingback chair

0:42:56 > 0:43:00and Jay splashed the colour with the Formica table.

0:43:00 > 0:43:04Turning a profit on rubbish is such a treat. It just goes to show,

0:43:04 > 0:43:07with a little bit of design know-how and determination,

0:43:07 > 0:43:10salvaged items can be given a whole new lease of life.
