0:00:02 > 0:00:04These days, many of us lose touch with our neighbours

0:00:04 > 0:00:07and, quite often, we don't even know their names.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10Sadly, that's a symptom of modern living, but it doesn't have to be.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12Today, the people of this small town

0:00:12 > 0:00:14have come together to say thank you to Irene,

0:00:14 > 0:00:17who's given so much to her neighbours and community.

0:00:18 > 0:00:20She does a lot of charity work.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22People don't know the half of what she does.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24Irene is a very special lady,

0:00:24 > 0:00:27whose strength is an inspiration to others.

0:00:27 > 0:00:28She is definitely one of a kind.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31There'll never be another one like her.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33She's had to overcome life-changing events...

0:00:33 > 0:00:35It's a miracle he survived.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39..while all the time battling her own terminal illness.

0:00:39 > 0:00:40I don't want to go yet.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43I think that's why I haven't got time for all this cancer -

0:01:12 > 0:01:14'..and get help from wherever we can.'

0:01:14 > 0:01:16Oh, Monty's brought us a Frisbee.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18Is that for the street auction?

0:01:18 > 0:01:21'And how will Irene react when we reveal it's all for her?'

0:01:21 > 0:01:25And all you lot I'm with all the time, you never said a word?

0:01:25 > 0:01:26No, we didn't, did we?

0:01:32 > 0:01:35Today, we're in the mid-Wales town of Llanidloes -

0:01:35 > 0:01:39the first town on the longest river in the UK, the River Severn.

0:01:39 > 0:01:40Llani, as it's known locally,

0:01:40 > 0:01:43has been inhabited since the Roman times,

0:01:43 > 0:01:46but it's now home to around 3,000 people.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49We've told Irene Crowther that we're in the town

0:01:49 > 0:01:52raising money for a local good cause.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55But what Irene doesn't know is that the good cause is HER.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00For Irene and Derek, love blossomed when they were still at school.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04I spotted her then and I thought, "Yeah, a nice little girl,"

0:02:04 > 0:02:07at the time! As you do when you're that young.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10He said he liked my long hair

0:02:10 > 0:02:12and not long after I had it all cut off!

0:02:12 > 0:02:14SHE CHUCKLES

0:02:14 > 0:02:19The couple married in St Idloes church in the town in 1973.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21Five years later, son Daniel arrived,

0:02:21 > 0:02:24followed soon after by daughter Emily.

0:02:24 > 0:02:25Life was good for the busy family

0:02:25 > 0:02:27until the start of the new millennium

0:02:27 > 0:02:31when, one summer's evening, Daniel, aged 20,

0:02:31 > 0:02:33was involved in a terrible car accident.

0:02:33 > 0:02:34He was picking me up.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39And he didn't come, and he knows time's time.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42So somebody took me to try looking for him,

0:02:42 > 0:02:44but we couldn't find him.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47I could hear all these sirens and everything.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50I mean, it's a miracle he survived.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55You know, he was very badly crushed from his waist up,

0:02:55 > 0:02:58on his head, and he broke his neck.

0:03:00 > 0:03:01His brain did have a hammering.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07The life-changing accident turned the family's world upside down,

0:03:07 > 0:03:10leaving Daniel severely brain-damaged

0:03:10 > 0:03:13and requiring 24-hour care.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15Just two years after Daniel's accident,

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Irene received some terrible news.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21Yes, breast cancer.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27And then rib cancer and then bone cancer.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31Irene was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2002,

0:03:31 > 0:03:34and given just two years to live.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37But 13 years on, Irene is still fighting the disease.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40And nothing will dampen her spirits.

0:03:40 > 0:03:41Never sits still.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44- I can never get her to sit still! - HE CHUCKLES

0:03:44 > 0:03:48She does a lot of charity work - gives her something to do,

0:03:48 > 0:03:51something to look forward to, something to work towards.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55She makes everything - she knits, she crochets, she does tapestry,

0:03:55 > 0:03:57she does patchwork, she does cakes, she does jam.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00People don't know the half of what she does, that's the thing.

0:04:00 > 0:04:04I want, for the rest of my life, really, to be doing what I'm doing.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08Other than going through all the cancer, I love my life.

0:04:08 > 0:04:12You wake up and you say, "Thank you, Lord, another day."

0:04:12 > 0:04:14And we'll see what today comes, and what we can do.

0:04:14 > 0:04:19She puts her mind to something, and she'll stick at it till the end,

0:04:19 > 0:04:20whatever it is.

0:04:22 > 0:04:23I don't want to go yet.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26I think that's why I haven't got time for this cancer -

0:04:26 > 0:04:28- I've got too much to do! - SHE CHUCKLES

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Irene wouldn't be able to do half of her fundraising

0:04:33 > 0:04:35without her mobility scooter,

0:04:35 > 0:04:37but we know her current scooter has been playing up.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40So we want to surprise her with a brand-new one

0:04:40 > 0:04:41in her favourite colour -

0:04:41 > 0:04:43pink.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45And this is how we're going to do it.

0:04:45 > 0:04:47We've got to knock on as many doors as possible today

0:04:47 > 0:04:49and cover a lot of ground.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52And I'm hoping that people around here are going to be really generous

0:04:52 > 0:04:54and give us their unwanted and unloved items.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58Who knows what we might find lurking in a shed around here?

0:04:58 > 0:05:01And I know a lady who likes a good rummage around a shed.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04She's a bargain-spotting upcycler extraordinaire.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07Irina Aggrey! hello!

0:05:30 > 0:05:33It's about our things raising as much money as possible.

0:05:33 > 0:05:34So the more we get...

0:05:36 > 0:05:37The sun is out,

0:05:37 > 0:05:40so let's hope the people of Llanidloes are feeling generous.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45Anybody there?

0:05:45 > 0:05:48We need items for our Street Auction bric-a-brac stalls,

0:05:48 > 0:05:49and if we find anything special,

0:05:49 > 0:05:54we can send it off to a saleroom to try for some big bucks.

0:05:54 > 0:05:55BARKS

0:05:55 > 0:05:58But this is not the start we need.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01Where is everybody today?

0:06:01 > 0:06:03- Andy Murray's on the television. - Oh, my gosh.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05And he's 4-1 up.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26- We're off to the seaside. - Oh, are you?

0:06:26 > 0:06:29- Do you think everybody else has gone to the seaside?- Yeah.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31Aberystwyth, they all go on a Sunday.

0:06:31 > 0:06:32I'll do a couple of knocks around here,

0:06:32 > 0:06:34and I'll come back in five minutes.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36- I'll ask him now.- All right.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56That's so sweet, Chloe.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59Well, I'm sure it'll go to somebody else who's going to love it equally.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01So thank you very much. It's gorgeous.

0:07:01 > 0:07:02- It is really nice.- I know.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05Some of the earliest art glass paperweights

0:07:05 > 0:07:07were made in 19th-century Venice.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10But it was the French that perfected the craft,

0:07:10 > 0:07:13and the names to look out for are Baccarat or Clichy.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15Chloe's modern paperweight should get us a few quid

0:07:15 > 0:07:17on our bric-a-brac stall.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21But most importantly, it's our first item of the day.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24And it looks like the second item is going to come from Chloe's sister.

0:07:24 > 0:07:28- This is great, no, I love it. - Rebecca's donating a bird bath

0:07:28 > 0:07:31given to her by her late grandma. That'll be sure to find

0:07:31 > 0:07:34a new home at our street auction.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36Well, at least we're starting to get spotted -

0:07:36 > 0:07:40- maybe our luck's changing. - It's a leather jacket.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44Oh, OK, thank you, yes, please. Brilliant, that's a start,

0:07:51 > 0:07:54- our street party, won't you? - Yeah, yeah.- Please do.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58And this, I know, we can sell, so every penny helps

0:08:00 > 0:08:03- You're welcome. - Brilliant, thank you.- OK.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05Good start.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07A new leather jacket would cost at least £100 -

0:08:07 > 0:08:11surely I'll get 20 for this. That's good quality.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13That's really good quality. Lloyd...

0:08:13 > 0:08:17It looks like the sun's not the only one with his hat on.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19And the weather seems to be prompting

0:08:19 > 0:08:21a winter wardrobe clear-out.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23Gorgeous! This looks brand-new.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27A warm Americana-type woollen top and a waterproof -

0:08:27 > 0:08:30we're getting good-quality clothes here.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32And on the other side of the road, Jean has found

0:08:32 > 0:08:35a few things for me in her garden.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38- Oh, that's great!- Yes? - Yeah, an old sign.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40That's really good, isn't it? We could take that -

0:08:40 > 0:08:43that's pretty good, that's lots of fun.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47- The kids would like that.- A little stool.- That's a little stool.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50- What about that? - Oh, the well?- Yeah.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52- Can we have the well? - Yeah, you can have that.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55'Garden ornaments are great sellers, especially in the summer.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58'And this little well looks perfect for a bit of Irina's

0:08:58 > 0:09:01'upcycling magic, that's sure to make us a few pounds.'

0:09:01 > 0:09:03- Make a wish!- Yes.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06'You know, it's estimated that tourists throw almost

0:09:06 > 0:09:09'£3 million into wishing wells each year -

0:09:09 > 0:09:12'if only we could get a few of those wishes in our well

0:09:12 > 0:09:14'at the street party.'

0:09:14 > 0:09:16Well, it looks like Irina's wishes are coming true,

0:09:16 > 0:09:20- thanks to Irene's friend, Janet. - Got some jewellery here

0:09:20 > 0:09:24that was left by an elderly friend and she would love to know

0:09:24 > 0:09:27that they've gone to something that would benefit this town.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30These three costume jewellery necklaces

0:09:30 > 0:09:32are at least 50 years old.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36But the design is so unusual, isn't it, and look at the chain on that,

0:09:36 > 0:09:39it is, it's very intricate, it's just beautiful.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41With turquoise and Tiger Eye gemstones,

0:09:41 > 0:09:46these necklaces are perfect for the popular vintage jewellery market.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49- I have worn all of them. - Yeah, quality.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51- Time to move on, somebody else can have the pleasure.- Yeah.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54- Why not. Thank you very much. - Janet's been friends

0:09:54 > 0:09:58- with Irene for 40 years. - So, when people meet Irene, I mean,

0:09:58 > 0:10:02- what stands out that's...? - Bubbly, vivacious...- Really?

0:10:03 > 0:10:07She is just in your face! That's it... You could never ignore her,

0:10:07 > 0:10:11- that's for sure.- Uh-huh. - She gives of herself...so freely.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14Her time, her energies, her expertise, her talents -

0:10:14 > 0:10:18she just gives. So it's lovely that she's having something back,

0:10:18 > 0:10:21for her. She deserves everything she gets in life

0:10:21 > 0:10:24cos she's had an awful lot of rubbish stuff happen.

0:10:24 > 0:10:26But she deserves everything that's good.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29- She has her down moments... - Mm.- ..which, obviously,

0:10:29 > 0:10:31that's normal, it's human... It's just...

0:10:31 > 0:10:34You knock her down, she'll bounce back up.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37- She's a fighter!- She is. - I like that, I like that spirit.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39- She's a tough cookie, I tell you. - LAUGHTER

0:10:39 > 0:10:40She is, she is...

0:10:40 > 0:10:43Well, Janet's definitely doing her best to help her friend -

0:10:43 > 0:10:47she's also donated this pair of bisque ceramic dogs

0:10:47 > 0:10:49and two limited-edition prints.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52Irina's done well there, but I feel like I'm being led

0:10:52 > 0:10:54down the garden path.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58- ..Like that, any good? - Don't you want those?

0:10:58 > 0:11:01- No, I don't.- 'We do need bits and pieces for the bric-a-brac stall

0:11:01 > 0:11:04'and these bits might get us a fiver.'

0:11:04 > 0:11:05I'm not going to knock that.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07'But it looks like former train driver Donald

0:11:07 > 0:11:11'is digging a little deeper into his shed.'

0:11:11 > 0:11:14Oh, thank you. Do you know what? That's brilliant, yeah.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17- Brilliant, we've got a fork. - What about this?

0:11:17 > 0:11:21- Cor, yeah, can we have that one? - Yeah.

0:11:21 > 0:11:22That's a really nice shovel.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24'This is great British craftsmanship -

0:11:24 > 0:11:26'a perfectly weighted builder's shovel

0:11:26 > 0:11:29'with a solid wooden handle. Brand-new,

0:11:29 > 0:11:33'you'd easily pay £25 to £30 for that kind of quality.'

0:11:33 > 0:11:37- Donald Norman Jones? - Northam.- Northam?

0:11:37 > 0:11:40- That's a South Wales name, Northam. - Northam Jones.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43We're not in South Wales, though, are we?

0:11:43 > 0:11:47No, we're... Well, I don't know, are we in Mid Wales?

0:11:47 > 0:11:50- I reckon we're in...- When it comes to the weather forecast,

0:11:50 > 0:11:51we don't know where the hell we are!

0:11:51 > 0:11:53LAUGHTER

0:11:53 > 0:11:56Do you know, you've got a point there, yeah!

0:11:56 > 0:11:59'Donald's wife, Gwyneth, 'has been doing some digging

0:11:59 > 0:12:01'of her own, and she's found me a Polish coffee set

0:12:01 > 0:12:04'and a Continental toby jug for our bric-a-brac stall.'

0:12:06 > 0:12:07He looks like Donald.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09LAUGHTER

0:12:09 > 0:12:12That was good, but that's not good.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15We're going to need a lot more than that if we want

0:12:15 > 0:12:18to help Irene, and she deserves this.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21Emily, who suffers with extreme epilepsy,

0:12:21 > 0:12:25knows just how important her mum's support is.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29She's amazing and she's been an amazing part of my life

0:12:29 > 0:12:34and she does so much for me as well and I'm so grateful to her.

0:12:34 > 0:12:38- Yeah.- And I'm very proud of everything that she's done -

0:12:38 > 0:12:41probably a lot of people don't actually know

0:12:41 > 0:12:43- how much she does do...- Sure.

0:12:43 > 0:12:47- ..and...- She's an unsung hero, isn't she? Basically.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49That's what she is. So, who's your mum helping out

0:12:49 > 0:12:53- at the moment?- She wants to raise money for a palliative care suite

0:12:53 > 0:12:55in our local hospital here in Llanidloes.

0:12:55 > 0:13:00It's one of her...things that we have discussed as a family,

0:13:00 > 0:13:04- that when the time comes, later on...- Yeah.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07..that she would like to be nursed in Llanidloes Hospital.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11As far as Emily and Irene know, the new unit hasn't been

0:13:11 > 0:13:14confirmed by the hospital, but more on that later.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17Now, back on the streets, the whole team are pulling out

0:13:17 > 0:13:20all the stops to help Irene. But hang on, Irina,

0:13:20 > 0:13:22I recognise that house.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26- He said he was coming back.- He was in the shower.- Can I? Should I?

0:13:26 > 0:13:30Could I take Paul's horn? He'll be livid, won't we?

0:13:30 > 0:13:32I don't know what to do...

0:13:32 > 0:13:34I didn't know there was going to be a bike,

0:13:34 > 0:13:37and that looks like a cracker. Vintage bikes are

0:13:37 > 0:13:40in demand at the moment, and you could easily spend £100 on one.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43This one's made by the British company Falcon,

0:13:43 > 0:13:45who've been in business since the 1930s.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47Look at that - they're leaving in ten minutes

0:13:47 > 0:13:50to go to Aberystwyth and Paul's not here, so...

0:13:50 > 0:13:52finders keepers, Paul, sorry, losers weepers!

0:13:52 > 0:13:53LAUGHTER

0:13:53 > 0:13:56Well, there's no "I" in team, I suppose.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00Irina's done well there and leaves with a bag of books too -

0:14:00 > 0:14:0350p each. That's sure to raise a few pounds.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05Thanks a lot, enjoy your time at the seaside.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07Sorry, Paul, bye!

0:14:08 > 0:14:11You get on your bike, Irina. You may have won that one

0:14:11 > 0:14:15but I think I'm on to a winner here. I've just bumped into

0:14:15 > 0:14:18local sculptor Neil and his wife, Maggie.

0:14:18 > 0:14:22Wow! The creative space! Look at this.

0:14:22 > 0:14:25- Oh, I love the frog leaping off. - We thought you'd like

0:14:25 > 0:14:28- the frog leaping off.- Oh. Oh, you are very clever.

0:14:28 > 0:14:30- He is, isn't he?- Oh, he is, isn't he?!

0:14:30 > 0:14:32- This is why I married him.- Yeah...

0:14:32 > 0:14:35Neil's such an accomplished sculptor.

0:14:35 > 0:14:38His works' been sold around the world for thousands of pounds

0:14:38 > 0:14:39and here he is in Llani.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44- You know we're having this massive street party...- Yeah.

0:14:44 > 0:14:46- ..with a pop-up auction. OK, you've got to come to it.- Yeah?

0:14:46 > 0:14:49- And can you help out, can you...? - Yeah.- If you want me

0:14:49 > 0:14:52to demonstrate some carving... I've got a brilliant idea

0:14:52 > 0:14:55- that's easy to do and short.- Go on. - It's called a captive ball,

0:14:55 > 0:14:57so it's a ball that's loose and in a cage

0:14:57 > 0:15:01- and it's carved out of single piece of wood.- OK, so that's great.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04- At the end of the day... - Yeah?- After the...

0:15:04 > 0:15:06- I'll do it.- Yeah. Brilliant. 'This is quite a coup

0:15:06 > 0:15:09'and I'm not letting up yet. Can I get Neil to donate

0:15:09 > 0:15:12'one of his beautiful pieces of work?' This is a big please,

0:15:12 > 0:15:15this is almost a beg, cos you are so talented, OK,

0:15:15 > 0:15:18and I know your work probably sells for lots of money,

0:15:18 > 0:15:20but is there anything that you can donate?

0:15:20 > 0:15:22Something that I can sell on my rostrum?

0:15:22 > 0:15:24Take your choice of what you can see.

0:15:24 > 0:15:28'Choices, choices.. I feel like a kid in a sweet shop.'

0:15:28 > 0:15:31- The smaller bits...- I like that. - Yeah. I thought you might.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34- He's been around for a while. - I like that.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37- Can we take this today? - Course you can.- Please?- No problem.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40Gosh, I want this in my line-up... LAUGHTER

0:15:40 > 0:15:44'Well, Neil is being so generous. This has been lovingly carved

0:15:44 > 0:15:47'from a solid piece of yew wood and was at least

0:15:47 > 0:15:51'80 hours in the making. Neil normally sells his torso sculptures

0:15:51 > 0:15:55'for around £2,000. But hang on, we're not done yet.'

0:15:55 > 0:15:57He's not the only one who does this...

0:15:59 > 0:16:03I make bowls, I'd like you to have that as well, for your auction.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07Oh, thank you. 'We may be struggling with numbers of items today

0:16:07 > 0:16:11'but that's some real quality there, thanks to Neil and Maggie.'

0:16:11 > 0:16:14'Talking of quality, it looks like Irina's found something

0:16:14 > 0:16:16'with our name on it.'

0:16:16 > 0:16:20It's lovely, isn't it? Beautiful. Look at that copper back.

0:16:20 > 0:16:24- Gorgeous colour.- Someone's left this bed-warming pan out on the street

0:16:24 > 0:16:27for us to collect - it looks like a reproduction one to me,

0:16:27 > 0:16:30but if it had been a good-quality 17th-century one,

0:16:30 > 0:16:34that would be worth around £200 to £300. I'll take a closer look

0:16:34 > 0:16:35at that later, but for now,

0:16:35 > 0:16:38I've got the trickiest door knock of the day.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41Right, I've got to keep my voice down a bit,

0:16:41 > 0:16:44cos Irene lives here. Now, I'm going to go inside

0:16:44 > 0:16:46and find out all about her, OK?

0:16:46 > 0:16:49Find out about the amazing work she does.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52And here we go - there's her mobility scooter.

0:16:55 > 0:16:59And it's not beware of the dog, we're in Wales,

0:16:59 > 0:17:00it's beware of the dragon!

0:17:01 > 0:17:05- Hello.- Hi, it's Paul Martin from the BBC.- Oh!

0:17:05 > 0:17:08Look at him! Isn't he nice. What's he called?

0:17:08 > 0:17:10- Monty.- Monty!

0:17:10 > 0:17:14Oh, he's gorgeous, aren't you? You are lovely.

0:17:14 > 0:17:16I don't know if you've got anything and you can...?

0:17:16 > 0:17:18- Would you like to come in? - Yes, please.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21- Come on. Can I bring the guys as well?- Yeah, come on in.

0:17:21 > 0:17:25- What's your name?- I'm Irene.- Irene, pleased to meet you, it's Paul.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28- And you... - 'So far, so good, we're in.'

0:17:28 > 0:17:31This is Derek, my husband.

0:17:31 > 0:17:35So... What... Who has the stairlift?

0:17:35 > 0:17:39- I had a lot of cancer and... - Oh, I'm sorry.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42I'm actually on a new treatment. I'm doing very well,

0:17:42 > 0:17:45- so...- But that was your stairlift, was it?- Yes.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48Gosh. You got up the stairs all right, didn't you?

0:17:48 > 0:17:51- Yeah, I'm doing really well at the moment.- Bless you.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54'It looks like Derek's got something for us in the loft.'

0:17:54 > 0:17:57We've got a Royal Albert tea service here.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00'It sounds promising - just got to get it down.'

0:18:00 > 0:18:02- Can I stick it on the bed?- Yes.

0:18:02 > 0:18:04'It's definitely got some weight to it.'

0:18:04 > 0:18:06- Was this your tea set, then? - My mother's.

0:18:06 > 0:18:081962.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12It's 44 pieces and there's a cloth in there as well.

0:18:13 > 0:18:14Wow.

0:18:14 > 0:18:16'This pattern, called Old Country Rose,

0:18:16 > 0:18:18'is Royal Albert's most popular.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21'They have sold 130 million pieces of it since the 1960s.'

0:18:21 > 0:18:24Listen to this. TING!

0:18:24 > 0:18:27- Wow.- Bone china really sings, doesn't it?

0:18:27 > 0:18:31'It's still being produced today, which is handy if you chip a cup.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34'Irene's dinner set, whilst not particularly in vogue,

0:18:34 > 0:18:37'is stylish and in great condition.

0:18:37 > 0:18:38'The 22-carat gilded edges

0:18:38 > 0:18:42'show little sign of wear and it's definitely a complete set.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44'I can vouch for that.'

0:18:44 > 0:18:47Do you think it's bone china, then? It's heavy.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49There's a lot of it!

0:18:49 > 0:18:51'That's a great lot for my auction,

0:18:51 > 0:18:54'but can I get Irene to help out on the day?'

0:18:54 > 0:18:56We are after all the help we can get, OK?

0:18:56 > 0:18:59I've been asking everybody to donate stuff, knocking on doors.

0:18:59 > 0:19:01Lots of people have been out. I think they're at the beach.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04But lots of people are in, that's the main thing.

0:19:04 > 0:19:07You know, to make things, to donate things.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10But even to give a bit of time up and bring friends along

0:19:10 > 0:19:12and spend some money, enjoy the day.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15Me and my friends, I'm sure we'd get a stall together.

0:19:15 > 0:19:16'Irene is on board.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18'No surprise, really.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21'She'll do anything to get involved in her community.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24'Now, even though Daniel is out with his carer today,

0:19:24 > 0:19:28'I think Irene has got a plan for how he can help out too.'

0:19:28 > 0:19:30He plays Connect Four to raise money.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33Do you think... we could challenge people

0:19:33 > 0:19:35to beat him at Connect Four?

0:19:35 > 0:19:37He'd love to be challenged.

0:19:37 > 0:19:38Even for an hour.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40- Shall we do that?- Yes. It would be brilliant.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42He'd love it.

0:19:42 > 0:19:43'What a generous family!

0:19:43 > 0:19:47'So that's a bone china dinner set, Irene and Daniel helping out

0:19:47 > 0:19:50'at the party, and there is more to come in the garden.'

0:19:50 > 0:19:52So far, so good.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54'Some of Irene's friends and family

0:19:54 > 0:19:56'have already passed on some items to donate.'

0:19:56 > 0:19:59There's a table there, look.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01- Have you been spreading the word, then?- Yes, we have.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04'There are more than a dozen cranberry glass bowls,

0:20:04 > 0:20:07'dishes and vases here. The pink colour actually comes

0:20:07 > 0:20:11'from a small amount of gold being added to the molten glass

0:20:11 > 0:20:14'but it's their kitsch, retro appeal that should make us

0:20:14 > 0:20:17'a few pounds per piece on the bric-a-brac stall.'

0:20:17 > 0:20:21Monty has brought us a Frisbee! Is that for the street auction?

0:20:21 > 0:20:24Is it for the street auction?

0:20:24 > 0:20:28'Maybe not, but what is on top of the table looks promising.

0:20:28 > 0:20:32'This 1970s Crown Devon coffee set certainly has retro appeal.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35'Since the pottery closed its doors in 1982,

0:20:35 > 0:20:37'Crown Devon has become more collectable.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40'Maybe it's worth widening the audience for these

0:20:40 > 0:20:41'and sending them to the saleroom.'

0:20:41 > 0:20:44This really is turning my day around.

0:20:44 > 0:20:46I'm gradually unwrapping these

0:20:46 > 0:20:49because I'm keeping my fingers crossed that is a set of six.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51LAUGHTER

0:20:51 > 0:20:55'All that's missing is the coffee, so that's the bric-a-brac,

0:20:55 > 0:20:58'a dinner set for my auction and a coffee set for the saleroom.

0:20:58 > 0:21:01'That's a hat-trick, and all from Irene and Derek.'

0:21:01 > 0:21:02What a fabulous couple.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06What a fabulous couple.

0:21:06 > 0:21:10You would not know Irene is terminally ill, would you?

0:21:11 > 0:21:14Man, what inspiration!

0:21:14 > 0:21:16She is fantastic!

0:21:16 > 0:21:20And we got some great donations and she's going to help us out.

0:21:20 > 0:21:24The whole family is going to help, which is just brilliant.

0:21:24 > 0:21:26Oh, do you know what? I feel really elated.

0:21:26 > 0:21:28I feel really, really quite special to be in her company.

0:21:28 > 0:21:32That is a proper, proper Good Samaritan.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35'Well, that's a great end to what has been a tough day in sunny Llani.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38'Time to see what our efforts have got us.'

0:21:38 > 0:21:39It's been a struggle.

0:21:39 > 0:21:42- It has, doesn't it? - And I'm looking at the lines.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44That's proof it's been a struggle.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46- I know.- Lots of books.

0:21:46 > 0:21:48That's good. Books add up.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50- Look, you've got a bed-warming pan. - I know.

0:21:50 > 0:21:52What do you think of this, actually, Paul?

0:21:52 > 0:21:54I was going to ask your advice.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56That's an Edwardian one.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59It's kind of a copy of a Georgian one.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02That would warm the bed up, but it did one other thing.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04What, what? Go on, tell me.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07It singed, it killed all the lice and the bedbugs.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10- Fantastic!- So you wouldn't get your legs bitten.- Good.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13'Well, there's no flies on you, Irina. That's a good find.'

0:22:13 > 0:22:15My jewellery, I absolutely love this.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18I thought this could go in maybe as one lot to the saleroom.

0:22:18 > 0:22:21- What do you think?- Yes, because I think that is silver-mounted.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23'I think that sounds like a plan.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26'I'd hope they would get at least £25.

0:22:26 > 0:22:27'Now, this takes me back.'

0:22:27 > 0:22:29- It's kind of retro.- I know.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32It reminds me of the kind of high school baseball jacket I had.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34- Really? Back in the day. - Back in the day!

0:22:34 > 0:22:37- I tell you what, they still wear them, don't they?- Of course.

0:22:37 > 0:22:38'And while we're talking retro...'

0:22:38 > 0:22:41- Do you know what? That's a good bike.- I know. I really like it.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43And the best bit... It has to be a girl's bike.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45It's got this little shopping compartment at the back.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47You just whack everything in there.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50'I think I could get £30-£40 for this.'

0:22:50 > 0:22:53- What do you think of my birdbath? - I love that as well.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56- Lovely, isn't it? - That'll find a home, a loving home.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58'I think Irina's line is looking pretty good.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01'But what does she think of mine? She'll be honest.

0:23:01 > 0:23:02'She calls a spade a spade, you know.'

0:23:02 > 0:23:05- What do you think of this? - It's fantastic.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08We've got gardens to work on this summer, so, you know ...

0:23:08 > 0:23:09That's not a spade.

0:23:09 > 0:23:11- What do you mean?- It's not a spade.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13- Yes, it is. - It's not, it's a shovel.

0:23:13 > 0:23:15- It's a shovel.- It's a spade. - It's not.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18A spade is straight, for digging turf.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21- This is a shovel for shovelling coal and sand. Look.- That's a spade.

0:23:21 > 0:23:22It's not, it's not.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24That is a shovel.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26That's my best piece, the sculpture.

0:23:26 > 0:23:28This was made by a local artist who I met.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31He's donated this, and his wife made that little bird bowl.

0:23:31 > 0:23:32Oh, wonderful.

0:23:32 > 0:23:36So that, I thought, a bit of a makeover.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38I could give it a nice little upcycle.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40Maybe kiddies' colours.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42Lots of bright colours.

0:23:42 > 0:23:43'That sounds perfect.

0:23:43 > 0:23:47'I can sell that on my pop-up option together with Irene's dinner set.'

0:23:47 > 0:23:49Toby jugs, bric-a-brac.

0:23:49 > 0:23:53I think price these up at two pounds to three pounds each so that's good.

0:23:53 > 0:23:55That's all bric-a-brac. That's money.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58I love the coffee set, the 1970s coffee set.

0:23:58 > 0:24:00That's going to go off to the auction room.

0:24:00 > 0:24:02- OK.- OK, with your jewellery.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05I'm reluctant to send that to the saleroom.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54if we're going to reach our target of £1,200.

0:24:56 > 0:25:00We checked the forecast and the weather looked awful for today

0:25:00 > 0:25:02and nobody wants soggy bric-a-brac.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05But Ceri and Geraint have come to the rescue.

0:25:29 > 0:25:33joining Janet and choir friend Tiff to sing in her beloved choir.

0:25:33 > 0:25:37Irene certainly had a big hand in the organisation of the day,

0:25:37 > 0:25:39not knowing that it's all for her.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41- Hello, what's your name?- Irene.

0:27:39 > 0:27:41and what song we're starting next.

0:27:41 > 0:27:43Nine times out of ten,

0:32:29 > 0:32:31'And that's all going to add to the total.

0:32:31 > 0:32:34'But you know, it's a good job the money is coming in today

0:32:34 > 0:32:36'because we've taken a risk.

0:32:36 > 0:32:40'We've gambled on the generosity of Llani and we bought this.'

0:32:40 > 0:32:43We've got to raise that £1,200. That's our target.

0:32:43 > 0:32:45If we don't, it doesn't bear thinking about.

0:32:45 > 0:32:49'And that's not the only thing that's had a paint job around here.'

0:33:23 > 0:33:26'That sounds pretty reasonable to me, Irina.

0:33:30 > 0:33:33This is the bargain two minutes. Everything is now 50p.

0:33:33 > 0:33:37'The scouts are spending their 50ps. They're clearing up.'

0:33:37 > 0:33:41- That's a deal.- That's a deal. - Cheers.

0:33:41 > 0:33:43Ah!

0:33:45 > 0:33:46'And that's it.

0:33:46 > 0:33:49'All that's left is to count the money while Neil sets to

0:33:49 > 0:33:52'work on his super-quick chainsaw demonstration.

0:33:53 > 0:33:58'Of course, we've already sent one of Neil's pieces to Bamfords sale

0:33:58 > 0:34:01'room in Derby, together with the '70s coffee set

0:34:01 > 0:34:02'and Janet's jewellery.

0:34:02 > 0:34:05'And it's the three necklaces that are first up.

0:34:05 > 0:34:08'Irina loved these when Janet donated them on the rummage day but

0:34:08 > 0:34:12'auctioneer James Lewis's estimate is just £10-15.

0:34:12 > 0:34:1820, 10 if you like? £10 bid with me. 12, 15, 18.

0:34:18 > 0:34:2318 in the room, 22, 25. At 22, 25, 28.

0:34:44 > 0:34:47'It's estimate is just £15-25.'

0:34:47 > 0:34:49£10, anyone?

0:34:49 > 0:34:5410, thank you. 12, 14, 16...

0:35:00 > 0:35:04'And it's stopped. £18, someone's got themselves a bargain.

0:35:06 > 0:35:10'It's just down to Neil's beautifully crafted sculpture now.'

0:35:10 > 0:35:13It's estimate here is £100-200.

0:35:14 > 0:35:18It better make the £200 or Irina's in trouble.

0:35:18 > 0:35:20Truly an antique for the future.

0:35:29 > 0:35:34It's an absentee bid. With me at 220.

0:35:34 > 0:35:37'Just over, that's a relief.

0:35:37 > 0:35:40'Neil's piece has really helped with our total and Irina's got the

0:35:40 > 0:35:43'final numbers from today's stalls.'

0:35:43 > 0:35:45We sent stuff off to the sale room.

0:35:45 > 0:35:50We made £264 and today we've actually raised £1,078.

0:35:50 > 0:35:55That is a total of £1,342. We've smashed it already.

0:35:55 > 0:35:58So whatever we can make on the rostrum now, that can go to

0:35:58 > 0:36:01a charity of Irene's choice and I think she would like that.

0:36:01 > 0:36:03I think we're ready to go.

0:36:08 > 0:36:12Did you all enjoy Neil and the chainsaw carving?

0:36:12 > 0:36:16This is what he's made. This is a variation on a Welsh love spoon.

0:36:16 > 0:36:19Just a grand scale. He's scaled it up with a chainsaw.

0:36:19 > 0:36:23Who is going to start me off with a bid of £5?

0:36:23 > 0:36:24It's worth every penny.

0:36:24 > 0:36:27It's taken this guy half an hour of blood, sweat and tears.
