0:00:04 > 0:00:06Ladies and gentlemen, this broadcast contains

0:00:06 > 0:00:10some extremely strong language and explicit poetry.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:00:18 > 0:00:21Hello, everybody. Welcome.

0:00:21 > 0:00:22Thank you for coming.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24My name's Kate.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27This is a very special night for me

0:00:27 > 0:00:29for a couple of reasons I'm going to tell you about.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32First of all, we're in the Rivoli Ballroom,

0:00:32 > 0:00:35which is in my beloved Brockley in south-east London, where...

0:00:35 > 0:00:36APPLAUSE Yeah.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39Where me, my drummer and brother Craig Bass,

0:00:39 > 0:00:42and a good chunk of this room have lived all our days,

0:00:42 > 0:00:47so it feels extremely special to be here, where we are from,

0:00:47 > 0:00:51with all you guys in this particularly beautiful venue.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54Tonight is a night of poetry

0:00:54 > 0:00:58on prime-time BBC Two television on a Saturday night,

0:00:58 > 0:01:01which is massive and really exciting.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04So as kind of cloying and trite as it sounds,

0:01:04 > 0:01:07I kind of want to thank the BBC for taking this risk

0:01:07 > 0:01:10and for allowing me to tell the particular story

0:01:10 > 0:01:12that I want to tell.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15This new work of mine, which is called Let Them Eat Chaos,

0:01:15 > 0:01:18it's a long poem set to music.

0:01:18 > 0:01:19I can't wait.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23I've been waiting for this day for a long time.

0:01:23 > 0:01:27Then, afterwards, I'm going to present some of my favourite poets.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30All right, ladies and gentlemen, this is Let Them Eat Chaos.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37Picture a vacuum

0:01:37 > 0:01:41An endless and unmoving blackness

0:01:41 > 0:01:47Peace - or the absence, at least, of terror

0:01:47 > 0:01:49Now, see, in amongst all this space

0:01:49 > 0:01:52That speck of light in the furthest corner

0:01:52 > 0:01:56Gold as a pharaoh's coffin

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Now follow that light with your tired eyes

0:01:58 > 0:02:01It's been a long day, I know

0:02:01 > 0:02:03But, look, watch as it flickers

0:02:03 > 0:02:07And then roars into fullness and fills the whole frame

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Blazing a fire you can't bear

0:02:10 > 0:02:12The majesty of

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Here is our sun

0:02:15 > 0:02:18And see how the planets are dangled around it

0:02:18 > 0:02:21And held in that intricate dance

0:02:21 > 0:02:26There is our earth, our earth

0:02:26 > 0:02:30Its blueness soothes the sharp burn in your eyes

0:02:30 > 0:02:34Its contours remind you of love, that soft roundness

0:02:34 > 0:02:38The comfort of ocean and landmass

0:02:38 > 0:02:40Picture the world

0:02:40 > 0:02:43Older than she ever thought she would get

0:02:43 > 0:02:46She watches herself as she spins

0:02:46 > 0:02:51Arms loaded with the trophies of her most successful child

0:02:51 > 0:02:54The pylons and mines

0:02:54 > 0:02:58The power plants shimmer in her still, cool breath

0:02:58 > 0:03:04Now, is that a smile that plays across her lips?

0:03:04 > 0:03:09Or is it the tremor of dread, the sadness of mothers

0:03:09 > 0:03:13As they watch the fates of their children unfold?

0:03:13 > 0:03:18In, now, in, kaleidoscopic vision

0:03:18 > 0:03:20The colours like drugs in your belly, churning

0:03:20 > 0:03:23Your skin pulled loose as a pup's, shaken and flattened

0:03:23 > 0:03:27And the waves are magnified as they roll up towards you

0:03:27 > 0:03:29And you're tiny as sand

0:03:29 > 0:03:32Just a speck

0:03:32 > 0:03:35And as you approach the surface

0:03:35 > 0:03:39All of that peace that you felt is replaced with this furious

0:03:39 > 0:03:41Never-known passion

0:03:41 > 0:03:45You're feeling the people, their faces are bright in your blood

0:03:45 > 0:03:47You are feeling

0:03:47 > 0:03:48You want to be close to them

0:03:48 > 0:03:50Closer

0:03:50 > 0:03:52Because these are your species

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Your kindred

0:03:57 > 0:04:00Where have you landed?

0:04:00 > 0:04:02Uncurl yourself

0:04:02 > 0:04:07Stand up and look at your limbs, all intact

0:04:07 > 0:04:10Clothed in the fashion

0:04:10 > 0:04:11This is a city

0:04:13 > 0:04:15Let's call her London

0:04:17 > 0:04:20And these are the only times you have known

0:04:22 > 0:04:26"Is this what it's come to?", you think

0:04:27 > 0:04:32What am I to make of all this?

0:06:03 > 0:06:06# Everybody's here trying to make or scrape a living

0:06:06 > 0:06:09# The fox freezes on the alley wall and stands still, sniffing

0:06:09 > 0:06:11# Bare branches sway in the front gardens

0:06:11 > 0:06:14# The lion's mouth doorknocker flaps in the breeze

0:06:14 > 0:06:17# Streetlights glint on the "beware of the dog" sign

0:06:28 > 0:06:30# Are wide awake, they can't sleep

0:06:30 > 0:06:33# Now, of all these people in all these houses

0:06:35 > 0:06:38# They shiver in the middle of the night

0:06:38 > 0:06:41# Counting their sheepish mistakes

0:06:44 > 0:06:46# Will it ever be day again?

0:06:46 > 0:06:49# Is anybody else awake?

0:06:49 > 0:06:51# Will it ever be day again? #

0:06:58 > 0:07:02Now, we start on the corner with our back to the wall

0:07:02 > 0:07:06Next to the old phone box, where the tramp leaves his bedding

0:07:06 > 0:07:07The road runs ahead of you

0:07:07 > 0:07:09There's houses and flats either side

0:07:09 > 0:07:10Walk down it

0:07:10 > 0:07:14Go past the yard with the caravans, there behind the hedges

0:07:15 > 0:07:19Now look here, in the house opposite

0:07:19 > 0:07:23Black gate post with a concrete frog squatting on top of it

0:07:23 > 0:07:26Through the hallway, ancient wallpaper, nicotine gold

0:07:26 > 0:07:29Up the stairs, rickety, loaded with history

0:07:29 > 0:07:33Here, in the top flat, flowers in the windowsill

0:07:33 > 0:07:35Little breeze fluttering the petals

0:07:35 > 0:07:38As they stare out at the city streets

0:07:38 > 0:07:41Gemma is awake.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44What woke her? Open eyes

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Streetlights float slowly through broken blinds

0:07:47 > 0:07:50She watches the shadows play across her tattered carpet

0:07:50 > 0:07:54And she holds herself tight in the room's half-darkness

0:07:54 > 0:07:56It's cold

0:07:56 > 0:08:00She wedges her hands underneath her armpits

0:08:00 > 0:08:07It's 4:18 and Gemma's thinking.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11# Before I was a adult I was a little wreck

0:08:11 > 0:08:14# Peddling whatever I could get my grubby mitts on

0:08:14 > 0:08:17# Ketamine for breakfast, bad girls for drinking with

0:08:17 > 0:08:20# I gave them puppy dog eyes for the acid on their fingertips

0:08:20 > 0:08:23# Heads in the face bin, lips without faces getting facety

0:08:23 > 0:08:26# Half-baked in a bakery eating pastries

0:08:26 > 0:08:28# Desperate for a body who can save me

0:08:28 > 0:08:30# But I never really wanted what they gave me

0:08:30 > 0:08:33# Always wanted something else, sweating in the dole queue

0:08:33 > 0:08:36# Spitting like a villain in a pantomime, old shoes, bad teeth

0:08:36 > 0:08:39# Drinking in the rain with my ghost

0:08:39 > 0:08:41# Sitting in the back of the class, comatose

0:08:41 > 0:08:43# Villains on my back in the dark hold me close

0:08:43 > 0:08:44# But you're never held

0:08:44 > 0:08:46# I did some things I swore I'd never tell

0:08:46 > 0:08:48# That night you tried to kill me

0:08:48 > 0:08:50# Run me down with your car in the snow

0:08:50 > 0:08:51# I didn't realise how far you would go

0:08:51 > 0:08:53# Every day I've lived

0:08:53 > 0:08:56# Lives in the day I wake up and my dreams are all screaming

0:08:56 > 0:08:57# I'm fucked but I'm fine now

0:08:57 > 0:08:59# Something remains, you're still pulling me

0:08:59 > 0:09:03# Yes, my future is bright but my past's trying to ruin me

0:09:03 > 0:09:05# Tried to change it but I know

0:09:05 > 0:09:08# If you're good to me I will let you go

0:09:08 > 0:09:10# Tried to fight it but I'm sure

0:09:10 > 0:09:13# If you're bad to me I will like you more

0:09:13 > 0:09:16# Saw some things when I was young that made me who I would become

0:09:16 > 0:09:18# I feel them with me every day because if you try and run away

0:09:18 > 0:09:21# Run beside you pace for pace Trip you up and drag your face

0:09:21 > 0:09:24# Through the mud of every wasted chance and every bitter taste

0:09:24 > 0:09:26# My heart is sprayed up with the names of all my friends

0:09:26 > 0:09:28# Who lost their way Doesn't change, it all remains

0:09:28 > 0:09:30# It takes your strength and gives you shame

0:09:30 > 0:09:32# All I want is someone great to make me everything I ain't

0:09:32 > 0:09:34# But the only ones for me are the ones that shouldn't be

0:09:34 > 0:09:37# Even though I'm doing good, I'm working hard, my work is strong

0:09:37 > 0:09:40# Might be fine just for a while to go out when my heart is raw

0:09:40 > 0:09:42# Reach myself through emptiness and push my body close

0:09:42 > 0:09:45# To anybody who can recognise the presence of my ghost

0:09:45 > 0:09:47# Try to change it but I know

0:09:47 > 0:09:51# If you're good to me I will let you go

0:09:51 > 0:09:53# Try to fight it but I'm sure

0:09:53 > 0:09:56# If you're bad to me I will like you more

0:09:56 > 0:09:58# Try to change it but I know

0:09:58 > 0:10:01# If you're good to me I will let you go

0:10:01 > 0:10:04# Try to fight it but I'm sure

0:10:04 > 0:10:07# If you're bad to me I will like you more. #

0:10:20 > 0:10:24Now, in the basement flat

0:10:24 > 0:10:27By the garages where the people dump their mattresses

0:10:27 > 0:10:30Esther is in her kitchen making sandwiches

0:10:30 > 0:10:33The slats on her blinds are all wonky and skewed

0:10:33 > 0:10:35You can see the top of her head from the street

0:10:35 > 0:10:39Before she moves out of view to kick her boots off, tired feet

0:10:39 > 0:10:42She wipes her forehead with her wrist

0:10:42 > 0:10:44She's just back from a double shift

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Esther's is a carer doing nights

0:10:46 > 0:10:51Behind her, on the kitchen wall, is a black and white image

0:10:51 > 0:10:54Of swallows in flight

0:10:54 > 0:10:57Her eyes are sore, her muscles ache

0:10:57 > 0:10:59She cracks a beer and swigs it

0:10:59 > 0:11:04She holds it to her thirsty lips and necks it till it's finished

0:11:04 > 0:11:08It's 4:18am again

0:11:08 > 0:11:12Her brain is full from all she's done that day

0:11:12 > 0:11:19She knows that she won't sleep a wink before the sun is on its way

0:11:19 > 0:11:23Esther's worried about the world tonight

0:11:23 > 0:11:26She's worried all the time

0:11:26 > 0:11:32In fact, she don't know how she's supposed to put it from her mind.

0:11:44 > 0:11:45# London, lost

0:11:45 > 0:11:46# Still we are clamouring victory

0:11:46 > 0:11:48# All that is meaningless rules

0:11:48 > 0:11:50# We have learnt nothing from history

0:11:50 > 0:11:52# The people are dead in their lifetimes

0:11:52 > 0:11:54# Dazed in the shine of the streets

0:11:54 > 0:11:56# But look at that traffic still moving

0:11:56 > 0:11:58# The system's too slick to stop working

0:11:58 > 0:12:01# Business is good and there's bands every night in the pubs

0:12:01 > 0:12:02# There's 2-4-1 drinks in the clubs

0:12:02 > 0:12:04# Yeah, we scrubbed up well

0:12:04 > 0:12:06# Washed off the work and the stress

0:12:06 > 0:12:08# Now all we want is some excess

0:12:08 > 0:12:11# Better yet, a night to remember that we'll soon forget

0:12:11 > 0:12:14# All of the blood that was bled for these cities to grow

0:12:14 > 0:12:15# All of the bodies that fell

0:12:15 > 0:12:17# The roots that were dug from this earth

0:12:17 > 0:12:19# So these games could be played

0:12:21 > 0:12:23# The buildings are screaming

0:12:23 > 0:12:24# I can't ask for help here

0:12:24 > 0:12:26# Nobody knows me

0:12:26 > 0:12:28# Hostile, worried, lonely, we move in our packs

0:12:28 > 0:12:30# And these are the rights we were born to

0:12:30 > 0:12:33# Working and working so we can be all that we want

0:12:33 > 0:12:35# Then dancing the drudgery off

0:12:48 > 0:12:50# What am I going to do to wake up?

0:12:51 > 0:12:53# I feel the cost of it pushing my body

0:12:53 > 0:12:56# Like I push me hands into pockets so softly

0:12:56 > 0:12:59# I walk and I see that this is all we deserve

0:12:59 > 0:13:02# The wrongs of our past have resurfaced to spite all we did

0:13:02 > 0:13:03# To vanquish the traces

0:13:03 > 0:13:05# My very language is tainted

0:13:05 > 0:13:08# With all that we stole to replace it with this

0:13:10 > 0:13:13# Riots are tiny, though systems are huge

0:13:13 > 0:13:16# Traffic keeps moving, proving there's nothing to do. #

0:13:16 > 0:13:19Cos it's big business, baby, and its smile is hideous

0:13:19 > 0:13:21Top-down violence, structural viciousness

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Your kids are dosed up on prescriptions and sedatives

0:13:30 > 0:13:32The animals, the elephants, the polar bears are dying

0:13:32 > 0:13:35Stop crying, start buying

0:13:35 > 0:13:36What about the oil spill?

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Shh, no-one likes a party-pooping spoilsport

0:13:39 > 0:13:42Massacres, massacres, massacres, new shoes

0:13:42 > 0:13:45Ghettoised children murdered in broad daylight

0:13:45 > 0:13:47By those employed to protect them

0:13:47 > 0:13:49Live porn streamed to your preteen's bedroom

0:13:49 > 0:13:51Glass ceiling, no headroom

0:13:51 > 0:13:53Half a generation live beneath the bread line

0:13:53 > 0:13:56Oh, but it's happy hour on the high street

0:13:56 > 0:13:58Friday night at last, lads, my treat

0:13:58 > 0:14:01All went fine until that kid got glassed in the last bar

0:41:43 > 0:41:45# This is my mind, get out of it You didn't want it

0:41:45 > 0:41:47# How come you're still hanging around in it?

0:41:47 > 0:41:49# This is my body, let go of it You don't want it

0:41:49 > 0:41:51# How come you're still fucking controlling it?

0:41:51 > 0:41:54# This is my night, get lost in it This is my bridge, stop crossing it

0:41:54 > 0:41:56# This is my face, stop smiling

0:41:56 > 0:41:57# This is my space, you've been gone so long

0:41:57 > 0:41:59# How come I still find you hiding?

0:41:59 > 0:42:01# Fighting me I'm fighting my darkest parts

0:42:01 > 0:42:03# I'm frightened, nightmares tighten

0:42:03 > 0:42:05# My hands round my own throat

0:42:05 > 0:42:07# Cos you're the snake charmer and I'm the old rope

0:42:07 > 0:42:09# No hope, just go now Please, just leave

0:42:09 > 0:42:11# Still in the air that I breathe I'm stranded

0:42:11 > 0:42:13# Arms outstretched for a body Any body, here's a body

0:42:13 > 0:42:16# But I wake up and I can't stand them

0:42:16 > 0:42:19# I feel so grubby, don't want, can't stop, just love me

0:42:19 > 0:42:21# Breath like a cigarette stuffed in the gutter

0:42:21 > 0:42:23# Please, come close, don't wait Just don't touch me, it's ugly

0:43:17 > 0:43:20So here is our moment

0:43:20 > 0:43:22Frozen

0:43:22 > 0:43:26We have seen our seven unmoving in their lonely homes

0:43:26 > 0:43:31It's been 4:18 and dawn still hours off yet

0:43:31 > 0:43:35My God, and they are cold and listless

0:43:35 > 0:43:40Not quite sure that they exist here, in this moment

0:43:40 > 0:43:42Slow and viscous

0:43:42 > 0:43:45Lips haunted by the ghost of kisses

0:43:45 > 0:43:49There is the endless saturation of the days

0:43:49 > 0:43:51And here they are

0:43:51 > 0:43:54There is nothing moving but their breath

0:43:57 > 0:44:01But I watch now as the breaking storm outside

0:44:01 > 0:44:04Brings this moment into action

0:44:04 > 0:44:07The sky cracks into a wild-mouthed grin

0:44:07 > 0:44:10And unleashes all the water that its carried

0:44:10 > 0:44:12Vapour grown heavy from every distant puddle

0:44:12 > 0:44:14Every lapping wave tip

0:44:14 > 0:44:19Every churning river contributing to this rain

0:44:19 > 0:44:22Now, the lightning rips the sky in half

0:44:22 > 0:44:24It charges through their bodies

0:44:24 > 0:44:28And it startles every roof in stark relief

0:44:28 > 0:44:33And our seven, they see their city new

0:44:33 > 0:44:36So Pete on his doorstep, he looks up, mouth agape

0:44:36 > 0:44:38He drops his keys in shock

0:44:38 > 0:44:41And he laughs a howling, ancient laugh

0:44:41 > 0:44:44Gemma sits bolt upright in bed and stares at the rain

0:44:44 > 0:44:48As it smashes itself against her windows

0:44:51 > 0:44:54Zoe puts her boxes down

0:44:54 > 0:44:57Bradley reaches for his dressing gown

0:44:59 > 0:45:01Now, see it from above

0:45:01 > 0:45:07Seven doors to seven flats open at the same time

0:45:07 > 0:45:10And, like the raining pavement

0:45:10 > 0:45:12Seven broken hearts

0:45:12 > 0:45:17Seven empty faces heading out of doors

0:45:17 > 0:45:22Here's our seven perfect strangers

0:45:22 > 0:45:25And they see each other strangely dressed

0:45:25 > 0:45:29One shoe and one slipper, socks falling off

0:45:29 > 0:45:34Slowly at first, tentatively, but then unhunching their shoulders

0:45:34 > 0:45:36Tipping their necks back

0:45:36 > 0:45:40Opening their bodies to this rain

0:45:40 > 0:45:44Their hair is slicked down against their heads

0:45:44 > 0:45:46Or puffed up madly outwards

0:45:46 > 0:45:49And their hands are slipping from their cheeks and chins

0:45:49 > 0:45:52As they clutch their faces, open-mouthed

0:45:52 > 0:45:55"Amazing!" they shout

0:45:55 > 0:45:58"Have you seen it?" they shout

0:45:58 > 0:46:02As they band closer, closer

0:46:02 > 0:46:05Like children drawn towards the eye of a game

0:46:05 > 0:46:09Shocked and laughing

0:46:09 > 0:46:12Soaked to the skin.

0:46:33 > 0:46:36# Indigenous apocalypse, decimated forest

0:46:36 > 0:46:38# The winter of our discontent's upon us

0:47:38 > 0:47:40# The boat's sinking a mile offshore

0:47:40 > 0:47:43# No beds in the hospitals, our minds are against us

0:47:43 > 0:47:45# Imagine your daughter was gunned down, defenceless

0:47:45 > 0:47:47# On her way to school, there'd be uproar

0:47:47 > 0:47:49# But she's collateral damage, it never happened

0:47:49 > 0:47:52# Now, if our kids are fine, that's enough for us

0:47:52 > 0:47:54# You can't love into a vacuum, there's got to be a limit

0:47:54 > 0:47:57# Welcome to the biggest crime that's ever been committed

0:47:57 > 0:47:58# You think you and I are different kinds

0:47:58 > 0:48:00# You're caught up in specifics
