:00:00. > :00:28.Hello, welcome back. We are now inside the Royal Opera house in

:00:29. > :00:34.London's Covent Garden. The 2016 British Academy film awards are just

:00:35. > :00:38.coming to an end. Quite a mixed bag of results. Let's go through

:00:39. > :00:41.everything we know at the end of another star-studded night. Very

:00:42. > :00:48.good attendance on the red carpet a couple of hours ago. Jason Solomons

:00:49. > :00:51.has been watching the ceremony. Always fun to compare what you

:00:52. > :01:01.thought a few hours ago with what has been happening. No obvious

:01:02. > :01:08.winner, a couple of big wins for the Revenant. It seems to be pulling

:01:09. > :01:14.ahead. Leonardo DiCaprio winning Best actor for his role. Also

:01:15. > :01:22.winning Best Director. That has pulled ahead. Four awards. Mad Max

:01:23. > :01:28.also with four awards in the technical character is --

:01:29. > :01:32.categories. They are the films were the most awards. Great win for

:01:33. > :01:38.Leonardo DiCaprio, we felt it was his time. Probably means it is his

:01:39. > :01:42.Oscar time. After four five attempts, he may scoop the big one.

:01:43. > :01:47.We will find that many Oscars only a couple of weeks away. If we think

:01:48. > :01:54.about Best actress, that has been interesting. Cate Blanchett Mohammed

:01:55. > :01:58.Fatau editor certainly gave her the award for best outfit of the night.

:01:59. > :02:04.No doubt about that. She did not pick up the win. The big surprise of

:02:05. > :02:10.the night, Best actress. Very hard to call. Cate Blanchett winning on

:02:11. > :02:26.the red carpet, up against Matty Smith. The person who won middle,

:02:27. > :02:33.Brie Larson, for her role in the film Room. It is an Irish film. Her

:02:34. > :02:37.performance was superb. Fiercely protective mother, protecting her

:02:38. > :02:41.child from the outside world. Bringing him up on her own. I love

:02:42. > :02:51.the film, very pleased for bringing this new, in. To beat Matty Smith

:02:52. > :02:58.and Cate Blanchett, a big shock. She was not here, she did not fancy her

:02:59. > :03:10.chances, I think. She's filming King Kong in Australia. She was nominated

:03:11. > :03:15.in the Rising Star award. That went to a young man with a great future

:03:16. > :03:20.ahead of him. Very popular and confident on the red carpet. He was

:03:21. > :03:25.confident, the coolest man in the house, John Boyega, the young star

:03:26. > :03:31.of Star Wars. That is voted for by the public. Just showing his

:03:32. > :03:35.popularity. He gave the best acceptance speech, cool, gracious,

:03:36. > :03:40.dignified. He thanked all the people who brought him up, his agent, with

:03:41. > :03:49.him since 16. He looked great in attacks either, in thing at the

:03:50. > :03:57.diversity issue. -- tinting. Great to see BAFTA nominating this young

:03:58. > :04:04.talented black man. Everybody relieved and delighted for him. Such

:04:05. > :04:08.a charming man, terrific actor. Interesting you mentioned the

:04:09. > :04:13.diversity issue. So much criticism at the Oscars nominations.

:04:14. > :04:18.Unbelievable lack of diversity. It has been a debate in the run-up to

:04:19. > :04:22.the BAFTAs. You were able to watch the ceremony more closely than me.

:04:23. > :04:27.Rebel Wilson making some choice comments. The Australian comedic

:04:28. > :04:31.actress, said she had never been invited to the Oscars, because they

:04:32. > :04:40.are racist. She made a joke about Idris Elba, up for an award. A lot

:04:41. > :04:45.of people thought he would get that best supporting actor. In the end it

:04:46. > :04:49.went to Mark Rylance, for his performance in Bridge Of Spies, the

:04:50. > :04:57.Steven Spielberg film. Much beloved character actor is superb and the

:04:58. > :05:02.role. Fede thing we can say that is anti-diversity. A terrific role, he

:05:03. > :05:07.nailed it. Very pleased Mark Rylance won that. I predicted it, a superb

:05:08. > :05:11.supporting role. He brings different colour to that movie working

:05:12. > :05:18.alongside Tom Hanks as an accused Russian spy. Steven Spielberg was

:05:19. > :05:23.here tonight. We saw him on the red carpet. Mark Rylance, also nominated

:05:24. > :05:31.for the Oscars. That will be interesting. He is someone getting

:05:32. > :05:35.such a reputation in the UK, but his initial reputation is very much as

:05:36. > :05:41.eight superb theatre actor. He's had a blossoming with Wolf Hall, will

:05:42. > :05:48.that play into the academy's decision? He is liked? I think so.

:05:49. > :05:54.That was a terrific successful BBC America. Great success on the stage

:05:55. > :05:58.in New York. That is where he is now. Could not accept the award. I

:05:59. > :06:04.think he will make Los Angeles for the Oscars. Relative newcomer for

:06:05. > :06:12.the big screen. That works in his favour. We are not really knowing

:06:13. > :06:17.him, he's fresh. The trick of Bridge Of Spies, less is more, the less we

:06:18. > :06:23.see of him, the more you wish this character was more knowable. It is

:06:24. > :06:29.the BAFTAs, the British Academy Awards. They have two categories,

:06:30. > :06:36.best film, waiting to hear what has been chosen, but they have Best

:06:37. > :06:43.British film. Really striking year. Some cracking entries. Almost to the

:06:44. > :06:49.point, looking at the a few weeks ago, we thought some of those should

:06:50. > :06:52.be up for best film. We will go with Best British film before we bring

:06:53. > :06:55.you best film. Best British film, delighted to say that went to

:06:56. > :07:02.Brooklyn, wonderful tale, beautifully told by John Crowley, a

:07:03. > :07:08.young Irish girl leaving 1950s rural Ireland to set up a new life in

:07:09. > :07:13.1950s New York in Brooklyn. At a border house run by Julie Walters.

:07:14. > :07:17.Charming slow burner, big choice at the end. It has captured hearts.

:07:18. > :07:22.Best picture nomination at the Oscars. Deservedly winning Best

:07:23. > :07:27.British film. Beautifully written by Nick Hornby. Well pleased for that

:07:28. > :07:32.one. It stood head and shoulders with the big hitters. Best film.

:07:33. > :07:38.Maybe could not cope with the best film, may I reveal it? It is a clue.

:07:39. > :07:46.Everyone is filtering out. As we thought. It is The Revenant. Finally

:07:47. > :07:56.it has won. Best picture at the BAFTAs. That means the director

:07:57. > :08:01.winning Best Director, that is the big one to beat. The success of the

:08:02. > :08:08.Oscars season. Leonardo DiCaprio left for dead, after being famously

:08:09. > :08:12.mauled by a bear in the woods. Coming back to wreak revenge on

:08:13. > :08:17.those who left him behind. A tale of injuries with Leonardo DiCaprio

:08:18. > :08:23.crawling through deep valleys, snow, eating raw fish, liver, growing a

:08:24. > :08:38.long beard. Sheltering in a horse-macro. Extraordinary long

:08:39. > :08:43.movie. -- sheltering in a horse. As spectacular as the Canadian scenery

:08:44. > :08:50.is, it is enduring. It is extraordinary. The director winning

:08:51. > :08:54.four Birdman last year, extraordinary run of form for him.

:08:55. > :08:58.Most people will flock to the film because of Leonardo DiCaprio

:08:59. > :09:03.committee carries the movie, we are with him every step of the way.

:09:04. > :09:09.Every crawl of the way. It is a real match a film. If you like survival

:09:10. > :09:17.programmes, you will like the Reverend. What you make of so much

:09:18. > :09:21.talk of what phenomenally hard work physically it was, to make this

:09:22. > :09:25.film? Filming in very cold temperatures. The wonderful

:09:26. > :09:32.cinematography coming at a price, the cinematographer only wanted to

:09:33. > :09:37.use natural light, they could only film for several hours a day. They

:09:38. > :09:45.like to say this is the hard work, stressing that, focusing on the art.

:09:46. > :09:53.Film crews have warmers for their feet, nice trailers, cups of tea.

:09:54. > :09:56.I'm surely not -- Sean Leo have a warm glass of brandy at the end of

:09:57. > :10:03.the night. The most important thing is the picture at the end. Epic tale

:10:04. > :10:09.of so bridal -- survival, everyone was impressed. It is not a banner

:10:10. > :10:14.year, because the spread of the awards. Mad Max, the film I don't

:10:15. > :10:19.understand, they go for a drive, turn back again. It's got a lot of

:10:20. > :10:32.awards, Best costume, I could wear a T-shirt, winning that award. Carole

:10:33. > :10:39.the film missing out. Wonderful film, I feel bad about it. It was

:10:40. > :10:43.very spectacular. Talking at the start of the programme the numbers,

:10:44. > :10:48.Carole coming in with nine nominations, I think it has not come

:10:49. > :10:53.away with anything. The cupboard is bare. A real shame. One of those

:10:54. > :11:00.movies, very cocooned in its own beauty. When they push to vote at

:11:01. > :11:04.the end of the night, does not quite take flight. It smoulders. A slow

:11:05. > :11:11.burning cigarette. Without catching fire. That is the problem Carole

:11:12. > :11:15.had, could not swayed voters to for it, even though it is a swoon of a

:11:16. > :11:23.film. Best of dementia read. Something I loved, even though I

:11:24. > :11:27.found it sad to watch. Amy, the director is a wonderful man, works

:11:28. > :11:33.in a journalistic fashion. Made the film that Ayrton Senna. I was the

:11:34. > :11:36.last person who thought I would be interested in that, but it was

:11:37. > :11:42.absolutely gripping. He worked the same here. I'm absolutely delighted

:11:43. > :11:48.for him. Amy is a London film about a London icon who came to a tragic

:11:49. > :11:52.end. The story of Amy Winehouse. We are witnessing a tragedy before our

:11:53. > :11:56.very eyes. He has changed the way documentaries are seen. Not only a

:11:57. > :12:05.successful documentary, in the cinema is, second most successful

:12:06. > :12:09.documentary of all time. Changing the way we are perceiving

:12:10. > :12:14.documentaries. Cinematic events using real-life footage to play a

:12:15. > :12:19.character. Amy Winehouse plays herself, Ayrton Senna plays herself.

:12:20. > :12:23.He's beginning work on a new icon, Diego Maradona. Could be here in a

:12:24. > :12:28.few years' time talking about that one. I'm sure it will be brilliant.

:12:29. > :12:32.I may enjoy that, and I am not a football fan. That is how clever he

:12:33. > :12:38.is. A couple of things we have not mentioned. Spotlight, the film about

:12:39. > :12:43.the Boston Globe, the fantastic undercover reporting that eventually

:12:44. > :12:47.won a Pulitzer prize, and a covering abuse in the Catholic Church. It did

:12:48. > :12:52.take home the prize for best original screenplay. A film about

:12:53. > :12:57.writing, building your case, journalism winning the writing prize

:12:58. > :13:02.tonight. Please for the film. Tom McCarthy, the director, wrote the

:13:03. > :13:07.screenplay. He talked very movingly tonight about how he told the story.

:13:08. > :13:11.Not a story everyone wanted told. They had to fight to get it told.

:13:12. > :13:16.The story about the investigative team at the Boston Globe, back in

:13:17. > :13:21.2000. So old-fashioned, people waiting for the phone, typing away.

:13:22. > :13:28.As journalists, we have a soft spot for it. In America, do not

:13:29. > :13:37.discounted. Liberal Hollywood credentials, the great ensemble

:13:38. > :13:44.cast, we will see that making a few steps towards glory on Oscars night.

:13:45. > :13:52.The only one to beat is The Revenant do. I know the British Academy would

:13:53. > :13:56.say, we are our own people, these are our awards, what Britain has

:13:57. > :14:00.chosen, but it is hard not to just think about the Oscars, only a

:14:01. > :14:04.couple of weeks away. As a closing thought, because I think you are

:14:05. > :14:11.missing a party, that is the one to watch overall? It is now. The big

:14:12. > :14:18.story, Leonardo DiCaprio finally winning the Best actor award.

:14:19. > :14:26.Anything that is the story, Leonardo DiCaprio blossoming as a movie star.

:14:27. > :14:31.We have seen in grown-up on-screen, the Basketball Diaries, Romeo and

:14:32. > :14:38.Juliet, Titanic. He is a man now, winning an Oscar, winning a BAFTA.

:14:39. > :14:42.He is the star of the night. Thanks for talking us through the night.

:14:43. > :14:49.Jason Solomons. All the results can be found on our website. That is

:14:50. > :14:52.all, the party just beginning at the Royal Opera house in London's Covent

:14:53. > :14:56.Garden. Goodbye.
